! r e m m u S o l l He It has been a short spring and we are approaching mid-summer nights pretty soon already. School is out and the open water lake season is in full swing. I was excited once we were able to canoe again and jump into the cold wet. My son is fishing away from the dock and we are grilling away on the weekends.

Speaking of grilling, we have put together some recipe ideas for you in our Cabin Chef section which we thought you might like including mixed beer drinks. Yes, mixed! In Germany we often do that especially during the summer. A Banana Wheat beer or Bananen Weizen may sound foreign to you but you should give it a try if you like it sweet. All mixed beers are pretty refreshing! Speaking of beer, did you know we have a craft malt maker located in Detroit Lakes? We did not either until recently and recorded a podcast interview with Maltwerks which is really interesting to listen to. You can also read the full story in this issue in our Made in Minnesota section. If you are looking for a new adventure this summer, you should visit the Character Challenger Course near Park Rapids. We met Travis a few years back when we made a team building trip to his high rope course. I am actually scared of heights but overcame my fears and went up. It was intense but awesome. I think I will take my son this year. Read more in our destination section. We hope you will enjoy this summer issue of our magazine and please let us know what you think on any of our digital platforms. Tune in to our weekly podcast and find out what’s up this weekend on our event schedule. Get out and explore!

LOCAL MALTS FOR THE MIDWEST
Imagine a Summer evening, a group of friends gathered in the kind of impeccable weather that only Minnesota offers in the Summer. While sharing the latest round of personal developments, ideas start to cross-pollinate and blossom. It's clear that among those present there's a diverse array of talent. In that very moment, a solution to a problem that has overcome the local area presents itself. It's this exact scenario that gave birth to Maltwerks. Over the course of the last three years, that business grew as a solution to provide local craft brewers with the staple ingredient for their own businesses, malted barley. Craft brewing, having proven fruitful on the east and west coasts, has made its way, in great strides, to the Midwest during the last decade. With that comes a demand for quality, local ingredients.

Randy started out as a collegeaged importer/exporter dealing in commodities. Rife with the entrepreneurial spirit, he quickly found success and is described by those near to him as a go-getter. If a business needed two tons of Coriander Cardamom seed, he found a source and made a deal from around the globe. When Randy’s family introduced him to craft beer in their various travels, the passion for that industry was something to be automatically attracted to. After coming out of retirement, the Malthouse soon became more than just a passion project. BACK TO FRONT: TRAVIS HOCKING, CODY JYRKAS; KAJ PETERSON, MAC NELSON, JESSE NASH, BRANDEN GRANT; JEN ZIMMERMAN, RANDY PETERSON - FOUNDER OF MALTWERKS, TRACI LAUDE
Though this seems like far away from a local issue, the situation is simple. In the Midwest, farmers are producing barley almost exclusively for the largest brewing companies in the world. While a quarter of U.S. barley is used as animal feed; the great bulk of the rest gets malted for beer. Now consider that in 2013, the amount of beer churned out by craft brewers expanded by a factor of nine, and is expected to grow by an average rate of nearly 14% every year. With all this growth in the craft brewing world, it's easy to see that malt is constantly in demand.
“Alongside the craftbrew explosion, small, locally oriented malt houses aren't just a commodity, but becoming a necessity.”
12
SUMMER 2019
The craft beer renaissance is now in full swing. Currently, the malted barley industry is global in scope and dominated by a handful of companies. However, alongside the craft-brew explosion, small, locally oriented malt houses aren't just a commodity, but becoming a necessity.
Randy has stated, "Lakes Country has afforded us a unique perspective in this business". This is particularly of interest for some of the new brewing trends and feed groups that focus on cattle and ranching. Did we say feed?
The Missing Link: Brewers and Nearby Farmers Environmentally speaking, malt houses that serve local brewers and farmers should be in demand. When farmers incorporate a “small grain” like barley into the dominant corn-soy rotation, it breaks insect, disease, and weed cycles, drastically reducing reliance on pesticides. The road to success isn't just paved with good intentions though, it’s filled with expertise. The background of Maltwerks has a history with Randy Peterson and his family. Here is the sort of skill it takes to start a craft malthouse and make it a success.
Yes, it’s a little known fact that many breweries and malting houses are donating grains to local farms, providing feed for cattle. It’s part of the eco-friendly attitudes made popular in the industry. Maltwerks will be working to expand that practice in the future. As brewing practices in the craft world become more and more experimental, Maltwerks hopes to use Randy’s background in buying and selling unique commodities to fuel the new wave of
brewing trends. Ever-looking to the horizon, the company hopes to provide brewing ingredients to home-brew clubs and eventually the homebrewer. This is a very unique development too. There are no craft-malt houses that offer products to the singular brewing enthusiast. As it pertains to Lakes Country, the goal is to develop more local relationships and provide solutions to ever-preser ving the farming land we rely upon. There's something special about c om mu n it ie s a nd fa r m i ng. Whether it's dealing in brewing or feeding livestock, there's always room for the community to lend a hand. Next time you reach for a can of IPA, consider where the ingredients came from. As you sip that crisp beverage on a Summer night, you might just find some similar inspiration as the folks over at Maltwerks. â–

BEER MIXER FLIGHT Did you know that in Germany they mix their beers–like really? Ja, das schmeckt gut! If you order a 'radler' which means 'cyclists', you get a pilsner mixed with Sprite. It's a common and refreshing summer beverage which they order at the beer garden after a hike or bicycle ride. We have put together a few other mixed recipes for you to try–Banana Wheat, Blood Orange IPA and the Sprite Pilsner. It may sound funny, but give them a try for a refreshing afternoon drink at the lake with just a little bit of buzz. Prost!

PREPARE 1. Fill about 1/3 of your glass with the non-alcoholic mixer. Slowly add beer to fill the glass. Give it a gentle stir. Enjoy!
JUICY (JUCY) LUCY BURGER Mmm, the Juicy Lucy, or in Minnesota area the 'Jucy' Lucy. Originating in the Minneapolis area, this mouth watering burger has melty, molten cheese at its core rather than the top. Show off your master cabin chefs skills at the lake this summer by putting a little twist on the classic grilled burger. We've provided some tips below along with the recipe to ensure optimal results.
INGREDIENTS 4 slices American cheese (or about 3-4 ounces) 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 4 hamburger buns, cut and toasted
PREPARE 1. Stack the slices of cheese on top of each other and cut into quarters to form four stacks. Or cut four chucks of cheese about two inches square by half inch thick. 2. In a large bowl mix the meat, salt, garlic powder, Worcestershire, and pepper until evenly combined. 3. Form meat into eight equal balls. Press each portion into a rough 1/4-inch-thick patty. 4. Place one stack of cheese in the center of one of the patties and cover with a second patty. Pinch edges together tightly and round out the edges with hands to form a single thick patty. Repeat with the remaining portions of meat and cheese to form 4 burgers. 5. Refrigerate burgers while preheating grill to medium high (400°F). 6. Place patties on the grill, close lid and cook 3 to 4 minutes. Do not press down on the burgers! Flip the burgers, close lid, and cook about 3 to 4 minutes more or until patties are thoroughly cooked. Remove and place burger on toasted bun. Add toppings and enjoy.
TIPS • For a really juicy and flavorful burger be sure to get high quality meat with 15-20% fat. • The standard (Minneapolis style) Jucy Lucy uses American cheese, however other cheeses such as mild cheddar, pepper jack, or Havarti can also work well.
• After cooking one side, you may want to prick a small hole in the top center after flipping the cooked side up, to allow for a little steam to release.
• Once thoroughly cooked, let the burgers rest at least five minutes so the cheese doesn’t erupt like hot lava hitting your lips when you take that first bite.
• Toast the buns right on the grill while the cooked patties are resting. Brush the cut side with a little butter and place face down right on the grate.

GERMAN POTATO SALAD A good, chilled potato salad is always nice during hot summer days. Try our German recipe, enriched with egg and refreshed with cucumber and radishes. Pair with a sausage and of course some mustard, no bun needed, for a simple yet complete meal by the lake side.
INGREDIENTS 5-8 red potatoes, peeled leaving a little bit of skin 4 eggs, hard boiled and cool (reserve one for garnish) 6-8 radishes English cucumber 1/4 cup Mayonnaise (Olive oil) 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 tsp Dijon mustard 3-4 Tbsp pickle juice Pinch of sugar Salt and pepper to taste Paprika for garnish
PREPARE 1. Cut the potatoes in half. Placing flat side down, cut into 1/2 inch crescents. Place in pot of water and boil until fork tender. Strain and rinse with cold water, let sit and dry until cool. 2. Peel about half of the cucumber, and chop into bite size pieces. 3. Clean ends off radishes and dice into approximately quarter inch pieces. 4. Peel hardboiled eggs and dice. 5. In a large mixing boil, combine mayo, olive oil, mustard, pickle juice, some salt, pepper and a dash of sugar. Stir until well mixed. The sauce should be almost runny, add a little more mayo or pickle juice to create your desired consistency. 6. Add diced eggs first to the bowl and mix, then add other ingredients and stir until well coated. 7. Cut fourth egg the long way into four pieces and assemble on each plate or in center of bowl as a decoration. 8. Sprinkle paprika and a little more pepper on top to garnish.

DAVE JONES’S REMODELED LAKE CABIN IN DETROIT LAKES
24
SUMMER 2019
BUILDING DREAMS:
A LAKEFRONT HOME IS REBORN BY MARISA JACKELS, TELLWELL
The moment Dave Jones knew he would one day get a lake place was on a warm summer afternoon in 2000 in the midst of utter chaos. It was a rare day of rest from the day-to-day grind of working in architecture and construction — which, lately, had been more tiring than usual. “I was so stressed out,” Dave said. “Work had become extremely hectic.” He decided to head out to visit a friend’s lake home, near Detroit Lakes, MN. The first thing he did was slip off his shoes, walk out onto the dock, sit on the edge, and dangle his feet in the water. For a moment, everything was still except for the lapping of the waves, and the breeze across the water. Dave felt a strange sensation wash over him.
“I just thought, ‘My gosh. I’m in a different world right now.’ And the stress just fell away.”
“I just thought, ‘My gosh. I’m in a different world right now,’” he said. “I sat there for a while. And the stress just fell away.” Dave never forgot that moment. For years to come, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of his work in Fargo, ND, he’d close his eyes and dream of the warm air, cool water, and sense of peace. “It was a huge discovery point for me. I knew this is what I wanted in the future,” he said. Fast forward nearly ten years later, and Dave saw an opportunity to make this dream a reality. A lakefront property was up for sale after a foreclosure, and it was located on a beautiful lot in Detroit Lakes. Dave was immediately interested.

However, when he came to take a look, the home was in one of the worst conditions he had ever seen. A walkout basement had been added on but improperly built, the carpet likely hadn’t been changed since the home was built in the 1970s, and odds and ends were found everywhere — like plywood bunk beds in an unfinished utility room. “I had never seen that before,” Dave said. “The whole place was in horrible shape. I felt terrible for whoever had been living there.” Thankfully, when it comes to architectural design, Dave Jones is something of an alchemist. Under his business; Abodz, sagging structures become radiant homes,
and abandoned buildings are restored. It’s a gift Dave says he’s always had.“I don’t know how I got it, but I have that knack,” Dave said. “I can see through what’s there to what it could potentially be.” That day on his tour through the ramshackle rambler, Dave was daunted by the number of challenges. And yet through the musty carpet, he saw new wood floors, the walkout basement became a brand new deck, and the walls became windows letting in light. Dave purchased the home in 2009. Immediately, they gutted the building to give it a clean slate. But then, Dave left it alone for many years as he worked on other projects. Namely, pursuing his vision to launch his own architecture firm — something he’d dreamt of since he was a child.
“I could see what it could be, and that was enough for me. It just came to me, exactly what we needed to do with it.” THE BUILDING PROCESS BEGINS
26
SUMMER 2019
“Starting a business, you want to make sure you work with people who are honest, who are rooting for you, and who do a good job. I found that at Choice Bank.” Growing up, Dave spent a lot of time with his dad, who worked as a contractor in Dickinson, ND. He was always fascinated with the architectural side of it, and he pursued this love through college at North Dakota State University, graduating in 1991 and starting work immediately at an architecture firm. From there he moved into the construction world — always with a desire to eventually start a firm of his own. In 2012, when he met Jaron Gustafson, an expert in field operations and project management, he knew he’d found the right business partner. That year, he and Jaron worked with Chuck Klabo, Director of Insurance at Choice Bank, to officially launch Abodz: a small business based in Fargo, ND that provides architecture, construction, and interior design services.
“It was a big step,” Dave said. “Buying insurance for your business, you want to make sure you work with people who are honest, who are rooting for you, and who do a good job. I found that at Choice Bank.” Dave shook his head as he remembered the early days of launching the business, remembering the excitement — and also the fear. It was a comfort to have Chuck on his side, he said. With the business on a firm foundation, Dave and Jaron began contracting work in Fargo-Moorhead and beyond, working primarily on residential building and design. After a few years, as their work expanded, Dave’s thoughts turned once again to the calm lake experience and his property on the lakefront, patiently waiting for its makeover. He decided it was time.

27
In 2017, Dave and his team started on the renovation of the home. Right from the start, Dave went big and bold with his decisions. They leveled the structure, keeping only the foundation as their canvas. After much deliberation, they also removed the detached garage and instead built a new, expanded garage; one that includes a section for cars, as well as lake toys — jetskis, sea-doos, boats, inner tubes, etc. On the interior, the new home has high-grade maple beam ceilings stretching from end to end. Wide windows on the front and back of the house let in beautiful light and give a clear view of the lake, right in their backyard. One of Dave’s favorite features is the deckhouse, something he describes as a “glorified three season porch.” It is designed to seem like part of the house but actually exists separately with an opening to the lake. Within it is an indoor grill, a big sectional, a bar top table, and a TV — an ideal lakeside lounge. It is, in short, Dave’s dream lake home. Two years later, it’s now ready for its debut as the go-to lake place this summer.
28
SUMMER 2019
With work and sporting schedules of his family, Dave hasn’t been able to get out to the lake in recent summers. Now, he’s looking forward to taking weekends at the lake and enjoying his lakeside home that has been 10 years in the making. “I’m so excited to f inally go back to the lakes again,” Dave said, grinning. And the wait isn’t long—after all, summer is finally here! ■

SUMMER 2019
OLD FRIENDS BREW UP A NEW LAKE TRADITION BY MARISA JACKELS, TELLWELL
Trees start budding, birds sing songs of spring’s return, and calm rains remind you of the smell of lake season; a long-awaited event in the upper Midwest. You can sense the anticipation from almost everyone you meet. Driving along the highway you see pickups pulling boats and heading toward one of Minnesota’s thousand lakes and you realize —lake season has arrived! There is something about lake season that ignites a passion within you for all things adventure. You somehow find yourself exploring things that you had never thought of before. Tim Heilman, EVP, Chief Brand and Innovation Officer of Choice Bank, caught this sense of adventure when he found himself becoming more interested in a new hobby his friend Darren had taken up; brewing beer. Darren, or “Mister Miyagi” as his friends lovingly call him, was a brewmaster. Tim wanted to explore this exciting hobby along with their mutual friend, Dave.

gold flakes DAVE AND DARREN FOCUSED ON STEP ONE - BOILING.
While their wives were not as excited about the idea of them brewing their own beer, the joy on their husbands’ faces quickly garnered their support. Memorial Day weekend was the goal. They wanted the beer to be ready in time for their celebratory lake season kick-off weekend. “We each picked our own kind of beer to go along with the lakes we live on. Lake 6 and Lake 7 got a beer. Then we combined another one to make a 3rd beer,” Tim explained, with a sense of excitement in his voice.
“The 3rd beer was a double IPA... actually...almost a triple IPA because it was between 12-14%.” he shared with a laugh. “Oh and you can’t forget the gold flakes, we added those just for fun.” Brewing beer was not an easy task as it required multiple steps. They first conducted the intense process of making it by adding together the prepped ingredients and waiting for it to boil. Then they allowed it to ferment, and finally, they bottled it. The entire process took a few months which required quite a bit of planning and a few back and forth trips to the lake. Thanks to Mister Miyagi there were no failed attempts, only successfully brewed beer. The long-awaited Memorial Day weekend finally approached and they headed to Dave’s cabin to kick off the summer. They didn’t want to leave the family behind, of course, so they decided to participate in Dave’s family campfire tradition. Only, this wasn’t a normal campfire, it was a “homework burning campfire”. Each individual child of Dave, Darren, and Tim’s chose their least favorite subject, loaded up all the

homework from that class, and brought it along to burn in the family campfire. The long winter wait was worth it when the delicious “Wheat Ale”, which Tim decidedly called his beer, touched their lips as they overlooked the campfire. Troubles melted away as Dave, Darren, Tim, and their wives sat back sipping their freshly brewed beer. The children? Well, they enjoyed every second of watching their homework burn. ■

Other memories also include activities such as tubing, skiing, fishing, playing outdoor games, spending time with family and summer/lake friends, meeting new friends, celebrating my birthday, and of course ending each evening with a campfire. I was fortunate enough that my parents had a seasonal campsite at R&D resort on Straight Lake in Osage from approximately 1988 until around 1995. After that, they bought a cabin on the lake and eventually purchased a full time home. I feel very blessed to call that lake “our lake” for as long as I can remember. With my parents living at the lake full time we’re able to enjoy all four seasons and the activities that come with them such as tubing and playing outdoor games in the summer to ice fishing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing in the winter.
My godson, Colden and I getting our tans on in the nice summer sun!
I have such a love for the lakes and camping that my husband and I now own a camper, and follow my family’s footsteps in finding the perfect lake for ourselves with a hope of someday owning on what we hope to refer to as “our lake.””

“Some of my fondest memories of growing up in lakes country were while fishing with my dad! Whether chasing June crappies, reeling in big walleyes in the fall, or bass fishing on a misty July morning—they’re memories that I’ll cherish forever, and hope to pass on to my own kids someday.”
Grace Bateman Northern MN
“Not too much has changed from 18 years ago. Just bigger fish and bigger smiles!”
BIGGEST WALLEYE “I love going to the lake with my family! We’ve been going to Lake of the Woods for the past 33 years. So many great memories have been created there from singing along with the neighbor lady leading with sheet music and a guitar around the campfire to laughing at all the jokes and stories of years past. One of my favorite stories is about my dad and whose fault it was that the “biggest walleye” he’d ever caught got away. My dad has long since passed away, but we still debate what really happened!”
Julie Demester Lake of the Woods, MN
“There’s nothing like a beautiful sunset to go along with some great stories!”
“My sons Coen and Graham showing off some of their favorite things to do on the lake.”
“Lake life means family time. For one week out of the year, my family and extended family on my Dad’s side meet at the same resort. This has been a tradition carried on from when my Dad and his siblings were little. We love taking the boys out to the middle of the lake, dropping anchor, and jumping off the boat in our life jackets to enjoy the water. And my oldest son, Graham, always looks forward to standing on the dock fishing all day long. But the biggest highlight is catching and feeding the huge snapping turtles! This week is so special to us because it means time together spent as a family away from work, school or technology—it’s a break from reality.”

KITESURFING T he Newest Way to Ride the Waves BY DEE MCCLAIN
Surely you’ve noticed bright kites floating around the lakes with people attached to them in both the summer and winter months. You’ve probably also wondered what it is that they are doing and how you can get involved. Luckily for you, kite boarding or kite surfing is rapidly gaining in popularity here in Lakes Country. Kite surfing is defined as an extreme sport where the rider and their kite are pushed across a body of water (in its liquid and frozen forms) or land, using wind as their propulsion method. It combines aspects of surfing, wakeboarding, sailing, paragliding, skateboarding and the like into one fun pastime. Kiting on land is usually done in a small low to the ground buggy, though there are land boards that are like large skateboards. Winter time play, known as “Snowkiting” is gaining popularity faster here in the north. A big advantage to this is that you can use the winter gear you already have, like short or long skis, skates or snowboards, to ride on top of the ice and snow. Speaking of equipment, this sport is more readily available to newcomers than most sports, i.e. hockey or football. You’re essentially buying a large cut of fabric and a board, easy peasy, and it all fits on your back at the end of the day.

SUMMER 2019
Don’t let the word extreme deter your interest either, for this sport is not age nor gender specific. There are different types of equipment catered to the level of speed and altitude you desire. You’ll never know until you try! The technique is straight forward enough even if you’ve never been involved in board sports: when the kite grabs the wind, you lean against the resistance and drive yourself with your feet. You will feel what’s right. If you are looking for lessons to try kitesurfing for yourself, Lakawa in White Bear Lake has got you covered. In the summer time, they offer a three to five class program, as well as 1:1 instruction. The five classes build from one to another and develop the fundamental awareness of Kite Control, Inflatable Kites, Board Skills, and putting it all together. All have a focus on riding safely and confidently. They also provide all the gear for all classes. But, the Winter Session at LAKAWA School of Kiteboarding is the time to learn since Snowkiting is the easier way to get into the activity. These courses take you from ground zero to riding, possibly all in the same day! ■

Water 101:
From Splashing to Skiing, Water Tips for Kids and Parents Water sports can be intimidating for young children, but with a few basic teaching techniques, parents can help them overcome their anxiety and fears. Successfully introducing kids to water sports at a young age will help them become comfortable around the water and enjoy water sports for the rest of their lives.
1
Start with Family Fun Time Together in a Safe Environment Simply splashing around, jumping in and out of the water and getting acquainted with the water is a great way to start. Utilizing a stable platform such as a dock, floating mat, or water bouncer in shallow water is a good way for parents to introduce young children to the water and help them feel comfortable. Always have children wear a life vest that fits properly for their comfort and safety.
ravesports.com 651-255-1428 SUMMER 2019
My kids grew up jumping on a RAVE. Now, all water sports are just part of our lake life!
2
Introduce Paddle Sports Youth who are familiar with swimming and the water are ready to take on a new challenge with paddle sports such as stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. Parents should familiarize their children to paddle sports by inviting them to ride along with them, and then when the child is ready, allow them to try it themselves under supervision. As their confidence and skills grow, it is amazing how quickly most kids want to explore the water on their own.
3
Move onto Boating Sports Similarly, present young children to tubing, water skiing, and wake boarding in a gradual manner. Many adults make the mistake of driving the boat too fast for young children --- for instance, for a child less than 50 pounds, suggested towboat speed for a beginner using a water ski trainer is only 10 mph and then when the skier is standing up on two skis, drivers should go only 13 mph. For tubing, drive in a gently curving pattern at 10-15 mph and keep the tube within the boat wake. As with all water sports for all ages, excessive speed may be risky, so use proper judgement to keep children safe and happy.

Standby Generators Offer
PEACE OF MIND & Uninterrupted Power
As reliable as electricity is today, outages can and do still happen from time to time. To ensure your life continues to run smoothly, you may want to consider purchasing a standby generator to provide your home with uninterrupted power – no matter the weather conditions outside. Lake Region Electric Cooperative (LREC), based out of Pelican Rapids, Minn., has partnered with Briggs & Stratton to create a standby generator program specifically designed to meet the needs of homeowners in our region. “One of the most common reasons people decide to purchase a generator through us is simply for the peace of mind it provides,” explains Steve Haiby, manager of marketing/energy management at LREC. “They appreciate knowing they don’t need to worry about storms coming through and having an extended outage when they are dependent on sump pumps to avoid basement flooding.” With many seasonal lake homes in the area, the standby generators are also a great fit for people who may not live in their homes year-round. Even if homeowners are down south for the winter, a standby generator will automatically kick in during an outage and provide power for the home. This is another reason people commonly give for wanting a generator, Haiby says, to simply maintain backup power so food doesn’t spoil in their refrigerators and freezers while they are away. For individuals with medical issues requiring electricity to power medical equipment, a generator can even function as a life-saving addition to a home. Lake Region offers multiple sizes of generators, all of which are designed to sense a power outage and turn on automatically. Backup power is delivered to the home until utility power returns. Having this automation in place saves homeowners the hassle of trying to start a portable generator and finding the
proper cord to connect. The generators run on LP or natural gas so they do not require refueling with gasoline or worrying about stale fuel. After a transmission outage resulted in four hours without power during the winter, LREC member Marcy Vavricka was so grateful for the way her new generator automatically kicked in. “I had been thinking about getting a generator for years,” Vavricka said. “I knew I wanted one, especially because of the winters. Sitting in the dark without lights is about the worst thing. I am really happy I decided to get one.” As a trusted local energy provider, the Lake Region Electric team takes care of sizing, installing, and offers a preventative maintenance program for the generators. Vavricka said the entire process worked very smoothly. “Everybody was so great to work with.”
Generators are sized by reviewing the past 12 months of historical energy use for a property. A load profile is put together showing the energy usage patterns of an existing account. When sizing for a new home, LREC may work with the homeowners' electrician to get a load calculation. A Lake Region technician will then work with the homeowner to determine the best site on the property for the generator based on factors such as the size of electrical service, off-peak programs, fuel supply, and the locations of dryer and furnace venting.
off-peak. “It is nice to know that if there is a storm some time when my wife and I are away from home, we won’t have to worry about heat in the house,” Haider says. “If you have a freezer full of meat or it’s 20 below outside, you’re going to be assured you’ll have power and things will operate just the same as normal. I guess the peace of mind our generator provides is really the biggest thing for us.”
After hearing about the new standby generator program offered by Lake Region, area resident Jim Haider called the co-op to learn more and scheduled a site visit with a technician. “They talked to us about our options and particular situation, and gave us a cost estimate,” Haider recalls. “It’s not a cheap investment, but we looked at the benefits of it and decided it was a good thing to do.” Haider says he thinks about purchasing a generator as a similar concept to buying homeowners insurance. “You may not always use it, but it’s a good investment to make,” he says. Other factors influencing
“The peace of mind our generator provides is really the biggest thing for us.” Jim Haider, LR Generator Owner his decision were the warranty that comes with the generator and the convenience of having the unit installed by his local cooperative. Just a week or two after his residential standby generator system was installed, Haider experienced a few short outages and was pleased to see that the generator kicked in right away. The whole house unit provided power for everything other than what was set on
As a service to customers, Lake Region provides a maintenance package with its generators. They even have an Easy-Pay plan, which allows LREC members to pay for the cost of the generator on their electric bill over a 48-month period. "We are proud to offer quality standby generators from a reputable company like Briggs & Stratton and make them affordable through our purchase plan," explains Dan Husted, VP of business development at LREC. If you are interested in purchasing a Briggs & Stratton standby generator for your home, call LREC today at (800) 552-7658 to arrange a free site visit and receive a price quote. REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE BY DIRK OCKHARDT
Summer is coming and traditionally the peak season for real estate sales. Half of all properties sold in Lakes Country in 2018 closed during the months of June and September. These 4 months are the most active and if you find the perfect property for yourself you may want to secure your lake life destination. Comparing 2018 numbers with this year’s marketplace we noticed that the amount of transactions is down by more than 10% year to date but the property volume in dollars is only down by 5%. This is an indicator for more higher priced property transactions. The value of lake shore property has been steady and increased most of the time during the past 5 years. These numbers do not mean that all lake shore has become more expensive however buyers are spending more money on properties in Lakes Country. Due to the fact that many buyers found particular lakes to be more desirable the prices on these lakes have increased more than on other lakes. That is a normal market reaction as we have limited shore line and properties available on each lake. Most lakes in Becker county, which are closer to the FargoMoorhead area, are more expensive than lakes in Otter Tail county. We have seen much more interest in Lakes around the Perham area these past years and buyers found adding 15 minutes to their drive into the weekend not to be an obstacle. Franklin Lake and Lake Lida have also grown in popularity

and you will find a lot of more affordable property around Dent by the McDonald Lake chain and on Star Lake. When buying lake shore property it is very difficult to compare. The purchase of recreational real estate is very different from buying a home in the City. There are many variables to consider which will determine which lake is the right one for you and which property suits your wants and needs most. We find that prices in lakes country are often driven more emotionally than metro prices. You can compare buying lake shore with buying a piece of art. Each property is unique. Location, direction, elevation, neighbors, beach, and many more aspects are making lake shore property a unique piece of nature. Some buyers are willing to spend more on a piece of property simply because it is exactly what they have been looking for in a lake life property. Selling property in our area is more than just selling real estate. You are buying a lifestyle and it holds a different value with your purchase. Finding the right place for you to enjoy lake life is a task we are very passionate about at Jack Chivers Realty. We live lake life year-round and like to show you what that means. Take advantage of our experience and knowledge during the process. We love lake life and we know a place for you. Greetings from Lakes Country! â–

IMPROVE AND PROTECT YOUR SHORELINE
TIPS FOR NEW LAKE HOME OWNERS
BY RYAN DE LA ROSA
Many of us dream of living on a beach or having the chance to live next to open water. This allows for access to water activities and some cooling down, ice fishing, etc. One thing that might not come to mind immediately though is the chance to help the environment and create a much more beautiful ecosystem, right in your backyard. Taking care of your home's maintenance is obvious for those wanting to sell or just keep the value of their home. However, being able to contribute directly to the very nature one is living in, can be especially rewarding. Here's our list of benefits to the lake that you can be a part of, as well as some actionable ways to make a difference:
>>Water quality >>Lakeside home value

SHORELAND HOMEOWNERS AND STEWARDSHIP
SIMPLE FIXES FOR A LAKE HOME
When you own shoreland you do have certain rights and privileges, it's what separates lake living from any other kind of lifestyle.
Many people think owning lakefront property requires installing a seawall and clearing natural vegetation to make way for a lawn. However, it's actually quite simple to take proper care of the shoreline.
In much of our area, soils are naturally high in phosphorus so lawns generally don't need extra phosphorus. When shopping for fertilizer, buy a brand that has a middle number of zero like 22-0-15.
C ont ra r y to popula r belief, high-impact development activities like seawalls and other shoreline structure installation, natural vegetation clear ing, and removing aquatic plants and fallen trees from the lake change the ecosystem and allow increased stormwater runoff, increased shoreline erosion and loss of habitat.
The laws do not prohibit retailers from selling phosphorus fertilizers, and even though most retailers are carrying more zero phosphorus fertilizers, it's up to you to make sure you comply with the law.
Homeowners are able to put a dock out to a navigable depth; take water for domestic and agricultural purposes; and to fish, boat, hunt, and swim. However, these rights must be exercised in compliance with local rules and regulations and those of the State of Minnesota or North Dakota for example. Some rules require removal or preservation of certain aquatic plants; placement of wells; and maintenance of septic systems. These rules are in place for the benefit of your health and safety and the health of the lake. The overall quality of the water can be improved with some simple techniques. It's our responsibility to protect, improve, and enhance the lake for your enjoyment and that of future generations to come, keeping in mind that the water itself is a public resource for everyone to enjoy. That’s called stewardship.
ELIMINATE THE USE OF FERTILIZERS NEAR WATER OR WETLANDS. By law since 2005, Minnesota homeowners cannot use fertilizers containing phosphorus, except for exemptions for new lawns or when a soil test indicates a need for phosphorus. Otherwise, it can run off into the lake and effect PH.
If you have leftover phosphorus fertilizer, using it on the garden, that is away from the lake facing portion of the house, is a good way to dispose of it. Before you consider fertilizing your lawn, aerating it is an easy way to give new life to the yard at the beginning of the season. If you have to fertilize in sunbaked areas, or the like, try to use the minimum amount needed to replenish the soil.
The lake is a living ecosystem and part of the larger ecosystem of all living plants and animals to which we also belong. In Minnesota, we are lucky to have Eagles live around the lake. That is something we do not want to go away. As the lakeshore habitat deteriorates, local species lose their habitat. Although there's nothing wrong with lake home ownership, it just has to be done right. Also, healthy waters equal higher property values. Here are a few tips to help your enjoyment of the lake, and also preserve its ecological integrity.

WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CLEAN LAKE WATER A clean lake is vastly more enjoyable than one covered in weeds and with debris making visibility difficult. It also contributes to the water temperature. A clean lake will warm up much quicker, and in this area that is very desirable for lake area residents. Here are a few things to add to your list for a clean lake:
>>Proper lawn care >>Pet waste disposal >>Shoreline erosion control >>Septic system maintenance Runoff is the main culprit here. It can pick up pollution and carry it to the lake. This can be reduced by minimizing hard surfaces on your property and limiting clearing and controlling the grading of your landscape. It can also be captured and cleansed so it doesn't reach the lake by using shoreland vegetative buffers and by redirecting it to rain barrels.
NEVER USE NEAR THE LAKE
>> Remove dandelions and other unwanted plants from your lawn using hand-tools instead of chemical applications.
>> Keep
grass clippings, leaves, and washed up plant debris out of the lake.
>> Use a mulching lawn mower and leave grass clippings on the lawn as a natural fertilizer, just keep in mind that excess material can be blown around with a good strong wind.
>> Collect and compost leaves and clippings, or haul them away from the lake to for disposal.
>> Do not burn leaves near the lake. Instead, locate fire pits away from the shoreland.
>> The
leftover ash from burning wood is very high in phosphorus. If the fire pit is located near the lake, rain can wash the ashes into the lake. Locate the fire pit at least 50 feet away from the lake.
PROPERLY DISPOSE OF PET WASTE Improper disposal of pet waste not only jeopardizes water quality but your health as well. Pet waste contains phosphorus and may contain disease-causing organisms, which, if washed into the water, can make it unsafe for swimming. Pick up pet waste in the yard or near the shore and dispose of it properly. Hopefully these tips will help you enjoy a more clean, safe, and beautiful season out on the water when Summer arrives. â–
The lake is a living ecosystem and part of the larger ecosystem... which we also belong to.

FOOD PLOTS HOW TO MAKE THEM EVEN BETTER If you’re a serious whitetail deer hunter, chances are that you are one of the many hunters that take the time to plant food plots on your hunting ground and may have even had success hunting those food plots. Have you ever taken the time to think about what else can be done to enhance those plots and stack the odds more in your favor?

SUMMER 2019
BY MIKE BROWN
I love getting out in the spring and summer and planting trees. Over the years, I can’t even estimate how many thousands of trees I’ve planted on my properties. These include pine, spruce, oak, maple, birch, and aspen to name a few. These provide great habitat for the wildlife on your property, but have you ever considered planting fruit trees? Over the past several years, new varieties of apple, pear and plum trees have been developed that are hardy in our northern climate. Not only are they great to eat, but the deer and other wildlife love them as well. With a little research, finding those trees that hold their fruit into late fall or even early winter is a great way to attract and hold deer on your property.
Adding a water hole near your food plot is another simple, cheap, and effective way to hold wildlife. This can be as simple as going to your nearby farm store and purchasing anything from a 5 gallon plastic tank on up, whatever fits your budget. Bury the tank near the food plot and fill with water, placing a branch in the tank so that any small critters that may fall in have an opportunity to get out. You can even go so far as to block one side of the tank, funneling the deer to an area where you may have a shot or will provide a better trail cam picture. Freshen the water up as needed throughout the summer and fall. As bucks begin to rut, having a water source near a food plot is a win/win for the hunter and deer living on your property.
Give the deer a variety. I like to plant a deer buffet in my plots, clover, chicory, soybeans, turnips, and cereal grains. I started using a scrape trees in my plots a couple years ago, and even though I haven’t shot a buck near the scrape tree, it’s always a good place to get some trail cam pictures. There are many ways to do this. Simply go into the woods and cut off an 8-10 foot tree that has some nice hanging branches, and bury/ pack the tree into your food plot. I went out and actually bought a cedar post and buried that in the food plot. In the fall, I will go out and cut a couple branches and screw them to the post. Any bucks traveling through that plot can’t resist going over and scraping or rubbing that post and branches.
Give the deer a variety. I like to plant a deer buffet in my plots, clover, chicory, soybeans, turnips, and cereal grains (corn, oats, winter wheat and rye grain). Deer will utilize those different plots at different times of the year and having a variety will help hold those deer on your property for a longer period of time, which will only increase your odds of having success come fall hunting season. If you are fortunate enough to have some plots tucked back in the woods, edge feathering around those plots is a great way to improve the habitat, increase hunting success and funnel the deer close to your stand for a given wind direction. Doing some hinge cutting around those plots will open the tree canopy and allow sunlight to hit the ground, which will increase the vegetative cover. The hinged trees along with the new growth will provide the deer with some great browse as well. Keep a couple openings, which the deer will use as they enter and exit the food plots. Place these openings in areas that are beneficial to you as the hunter. Make sure to consider wind direction when hunting that stand as well. These are just a few ideas that are relatively inexpensive and may help you put the odds of killing a mature buck in your favor this fall. ■
