Maplelag Resort
The mountain biking community in Detroit Lakes is growing and although our area doesn't have an actual 'Mountain,' mountain bikers can find miles of trails just in Becker County. Maplelag Resort and Detroit Mountain Recreation Area are the two staple mountain biking locations in the area. Each are ski resorts in the winter and come summer are home to some of the best rated biking trails in West Central Minnesota. Whether you are trying the sport for the first time, or a seasoned professional, these locations have trail options to suit both. Another hidden gem nearby is the Mountain View Single track. It's located just south of Detroit Mountain and offers more of a woodsy mountain biking experience if that is what you prefer. Check out The MTB project, an online resource to find trail maps other mountain biking locations in surrounding communities. Trying for the first time? We suggest starting with an easy trail at Detroit Mountain. They even have mountain bikes you can rent.

It would seem that everyone in Lakes Country has heard of this band, but have you experienced what they can do on stage? These four guys share more than just a lake style origin. Minnesota based musicians Tripwire is a multi-instrumental group that plays with passion, remaining one of the few full-time bands around. This band performs to entertain and connect to the audience. The back-and-forth connection comes from listening to the audience as much as you listen to the group up there playing familiar hits from five decades. They are one of the most engaging bands around in that aspect. You'll never see a predetermined setlist from this band. What makes the magic happen is the use of sign language and talkback mics; they communicate during songs to pick what to play next. Tripwire performs organized chaos. With this large of a repertoire, the lack of a setlist is genuinely an impressive feat.
If country and classic rock isn't going over well, they can quickly shift to match the crowds' desires. They are there to win you over, and if that requires playing something making the rounds on the radio, Tripwire is prepared for anything. Tripwire plays every kind of venue one could imagine in the upper Midwest. Not only as a headlining act and as support for names everyone would recognize.
When talking with the band, it's obvious they are passionate about their craft. It's a passion that gives way to an experience. You can tell they love giving the crowd a show.
Unlike many of the professional touring musicians, though, Tripwire is entirely DIY. The act brings enough gear to play outdoors and in any setting: lights, sound, action!
The shows can last as long as three hours, as they know enough material to play marathon sets from private events to upwards of thousands.
This kind of self-contained show translates to programming their light show, mixing their live sound and bringing enough equipment to play without the use of a club provided sound engineer. Parties, small clubs, or outdoor venues are all a possibility. They put in
Every performance is different, and the band can play street dances or open for national touring acts. The ability to draw from a wealth of cover

interfere with lake activities, but over the years, he's made a commitment to getting back to wakeboarding.
Despite the success, these are all lakes area country guys. They remain humble and often joke about the meaning of the name.
However, the group confesses that the best shows are always the unexpected ones. When the crowd is engaged, that's when the magic happens. Crowd size varies from small groups of fifty to seas of endless faces.
No one is sure where the name came from, but it's remained a part of their legacy since starting in 2004. Lars, guitar, and vocals joined Trip Wire after a four-year hiatus from music during college. When he was about to make a move to California to pursue making films, the opportunity came. He grew up on a lake and still makes time to get back on the water. His primary concern was that Tripwire would
The band has big plans for 2020, including playing the motorcycle festival, Sturgis, and other big festivals on the horizon.
Next time you see Tripwire is coming to your area, don't stay home. These guys are a one-ofa-kind experience.

Whether cooking for a quiet afternoon near the lake or the family reunion next week, these recipes are sure to please the young, old and everyone in between.
CROWD PLEASING PASTA SALAD INGREDIENTS 16 oz bowtie or rotini pasta 2 tsp salt 1 pint cherry tomatoes 1 pound Italian salami, cut into rounds and quartered ½ cup pepperoncinis 8 oz mozzarella balls ½ cup kalamata or large black olives, pitted and cut in half 1/3 cup red onion, diced ½ orange bell pepper, diced ½ cup chopped cucumber 8 fresh basil leaves, chopped 16 oz bottle of your favorite Italian Dressing ½ cup feta or shredded parmesan cheese
PREPARE 1. Bring a pot of water to boil. Add the pasta and the salt. Cook until al dente. Avoid overcooking as the pasta may fall apart when stirred in the salad. 2. Drain the pasta and immediately rinse it with cold water to cool to prevent over cooking. Transfer pasta to a large bowl. 3. Add all the ingredients except for the dressing and cheese, then stir. 4. Pour in half of the bottle of dressing and toss to coat all of the ingredients. 5. It is recommended to chill the pasta salad in the fridge for about 2 to 3 hours before serving, to help all the flavors come together. 6. Right before serving, taste and add more dressing if desired. Top with cheese. * You can even simply leave out the salami to make it vegetarian

Submerge wooden skewers in water and soak for 30 minutes. 3. Skewer the chicken and vegetables alternating pieces. Make sure to leave a couple inches on either end to hold on to. 4. Heat up the grill to a medium-high heat and cook for approximately 6 minutes per side. You can check if the chicken is done by using a meat thermometer. The Hiztory Behind a Lakez Area Clazzic STORY BY RYAN DELA ROSE
While celebrating their 50th year, we sat down with Cole Hanson, son of Tom Hanson, founder of Zorbaz to get the full story behind this Minnesota lakes area staple.

SPRING 2020
ZORBAZ ON THE LAKE Few dining experiences justify developing a language to describe it. Keep reading to zee what we mean. What would Lake Life in Minnesota be without Zorbaz? The iconic Z destination is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Cole Hanson, the son of the founder, Tom Hanson, now runs the ground-up restaurant company. They feature live music often and take the reins of the party personality one wants in an outing on a beach. Cole became the CEO 12 years ago, but the restaurant has a long history within his family. Tom Hanson and his family spent a significant amount of time out on the West Coast of California. The beach culture they discovered had a lasting impression. With Tom and his entrepreneurial enthusiasm, inspiration took hold. It all manifested at a small candy store at the beach in Detroit Lakes in 1969. Today it has become a lifestyle destination to many of us over the years. Today, Cole is operating 15 restaurants in the state of Minnesota and is only gaining momentum as it sounds. For the uninitiated, Zorbaz revolves around the atmosphere. It's like a pontoon ride on your favorite lake. >>
LAKE LIFE WKND
25
Cole Hanson says even if the conditions aren't perfect, there's always something to keep guests intrigued. Cole has been with Zorbaz his entire professional life, beginning at a young age, working hard in the kitchen. To discuss Cole, however, it's essential to know his family first. His father was born on Lake Melissa, where he resided most of his life and also started the first Zorbaz restaurant there. In the mid-sixties, his parents met in Southern California, and they soon relocated back to Minnesota. Shortly after purchasing the candy shop, which later became Zorbaz, Tom Hanson began working on getting a public beach on the shores of Detroit Lake. As we know today, he succeeded. In the 1980s, Detroit Lakes began to boom, and it allowed some momentum. From candy shop to a local bar with frozen pizza to the massive footprint of the restaurant today. The trajectory is hardly expected, that is until you understand the drive behind the Zorbaz collective.
"life should be gulped, not sipped." Tom was unusually energetic and completed construction on the original building with the help of close friends. This speaks to the successes of the company. Zorbaz thrives on several vital aspects. The hard work and fast-paced energy of Tom Hanson and the partners he brought on this journey. Tom always said, "life should be gulped, not sipped." His larger than life personally dubbed him the nickname 'Jumbo.' He frequently exclaimed that we live in a
26
FALL 2019
vortex of positivity. Today they feature Jumbo-palooza, an excuse to throw a party for the staff, and as a way to metaphorically high-five Tom. Despite all his talents, Tom wasn't the chef, but his brother introduced them to organic ingredients and signature recipes that you won't find anywhere else. One can rarely say they've had a sauerkraut pizza or the unique Louden, peanut butter, jalapeĂąo pizza topped with pepperoni and mozzarella. One way you might be familiar with Zorbaz without having been there is via the aesthetically pleasing t-shirts they produce. The t-shirts started being sold right away on-site, and today you're hard-pressed to walk around Lakes country without seeing someone sport one. Having the '60s California background, selling t-shirts was just a natural route to follow. The usage of Z's came into play on these shirts. However, it was Tom Hanson's wife that originated the idea. Everyone in the company has a voice, and through the restaurant culture and clothing brand, they can be heard. With the many locations, each one can be an utterly distinct experience. Varying lakes are zoned differently for commercial spaces, so the creativity of the team of Zorbaz means being adaptable and making the most out of each situation. With the Summer coming, it's time to get back out and enjoy a beverage by one of Minnesota's most significant features: the lakes. What's your favorite Zorbaz?

Dreaming of Lake Life? What To Know Before Buying a Lake Home For those of us who were fortunate enough to grow up in lakes country, childhood memories are filled with minnows caught off the dock, sandcastles built along the shore, and marshmallows roasted around the campfire. As we grow older and have children of our own, many of us dream of purchasing a lake home and sharing those memories with another generation.
LAKE LIFE WKND
29
The experts weigh in... Purchasing a lake home can be one of life’s most exciting moments. But without proper preparation, it can also be one of life’s most stressful decisions. We sat down with a panel of experts to find out what you need to know before purchasing a lakefront property. OUR CONTRIBUTORS: Leslie A. Anderson, Attorney at Leslie A. Anderson, Ltd. Wendy Caswell, Owner and Certified Residential Appraiser at Caswell Appraisal Colleen Karst, Senior Vice President and Mortgage Lending Manager at Choice Bank Vikki Miller Johnson, Vice Presidents and Mortgage Loan Officer at Choice Bank Jon Schindel, Attorney at SeilerSchindel
Do Your Research Whether you are purchasing an existing home or building your own, make sure you research the land, the lake, and the responsibilities that come along with them.
LES: There are a lot of rules and regulations to be aware of, especially if you are purchasing a lot to build a new property. You cannot build anything closer to the lake starting at the high water mark. And before you build anything, you need to be so many feet behind your neighbor’s boundary line.
30
SPRING 2020
WENDY: Unless it’s a brand new construction, usually a lake home has started as a cabin and has been built on due to setback regulations—if you were to tear it down and build new, you would have to go further away from the lake. So you have to make sure that all of the setbacks meet regulation.
Be Prepared to Spend Many buyers are surprised when they discover the additional costs that come with purchasing a secondary property, especially on a lake. Knowing about these costs ahead of time can allow you to budget accordingly and avoid financial strain later on.
VIKKI: The down payment on a second home is 10 percent, as opposed to 0 to 5 percent, because a second home poses a greater risk. If you fall into hard times, what will be the first thing to go? Not your primary residence. COLLEEN: All lake home owners should consider getting liability insurance. There is greater liability associated with a lake home— say, if you have a guest over and they fall off your boat and get injured. You need to make sure that you are adequately covered. Depending on the elevation of the property and where it sits versus the lake, it may be in a flood zone. If it is in a flood zone, then you will be required to have flood insurance. So you really need to consider that flood insurance is an extra expense a well.
Opt for Year-Round Even if you anticipate primarily using your lakefront property in the summer, Vikki recommends purchasing a year-round home over a seasonal cabin. Opting for yearround will not only allow VIKKI: In order to be considered for longyou to trade in your jet ski term fixed rate financing, the home needs to be suitable for year-round use versus for a snowmobile and enjoy just a seasonal cabin. Sometimes it’s an beautiful winters in lakes easy fix; I've seen seasonal cabins that country; it can also save truly just needed a heating source in all you money. rooms. It could be as simple as protecting the well so that it can sustain winter.

Get Inspected Every single one of our experts had one piece of advice in common: get an inspection before you buy.
WENDY: An inspection will always be money well spent. An appraiser can tell you that the house is there and that it’s worth the value; we will not be able to tell you how long your furnace is going to last, or your appliances, or when you need to replace your windows or your roof.
JON: An inspection is nonnegotiable. Lake homes are unique in that they sit empty for a lot of the year, so they are more subject to things going wrong. If something happens with the water, it could run for a week before anybody notices. With cabins, we often run into deferred maintenance, or neglect.
Make a Plan When you finally take the leap and purchase your lake home, the last thing you want to think about is what will happen to it when you are no longer around. But setting up a cabin trust ensures a plan for the property’s future—allowing your family to enjoy the property for many generations to come.
The memories made with our friends and family trump all the extra work!
32
SPRING 2020
JON: A common scenario for cabins is that mom and dad have four kids. Once mom and dad are gone, the costs of upkeep on the cabin continue (taxes, upkeep, repair of toys, etc.) when the four kids inherit the cabin. We encourage clients to set up either a cabin trust or an LLC for the cabin which sets the rules for the cabin after they pass away, most specifically how expenses are paid and the mechanism for the siblings to buy each other out if people don't want anything to do with the cabin.
It’s a Great Investment! LES: I don’t think a lake home will ever go down in value. It’s a great investment, plus you get to use it and enjoy it. They’re not making any new lakes. As long as it is a decent lake and property, there will always be a strong market.
VIKKI: Owning a second home is work. It’s another lawn to mow, another home to clean, a dock to stain. But I would not give it up for anything. The memories made with our friends and family trumps it all!
Purchasing a lake home doesn’t have to be a challenging experience. With a little research, a plan for the future, and the right experts on your side, you can start making your own Lake Life memories— without the stress.

THIS SPRING 34
SPRING 2020
The snow is melting, the days growing longer, and in Minnesota, that can only mean one thing: lake season is finally upon us. We can practically smell the sunscreen, freshly mowed grass, and burning charcoal already! But as you restock the tackle box and wipe a winter’s worth of dust from your boat, it’s important to also brush up on your water safety knowledge. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources provided us with their tips for staying safe on the water this spring.

Not Quite Spring Yet?
Ice Safety - Did You Know? As much as we hate to admit it, many of our lakes will still be covered in ice for a few more months. Don’t let your excitement for getting out on the water put you in danger; follow the DNR’s advice for being on the ice this spring.
New ice is usually stronger than old ice
Ice formed over flowing water and currents is often dangerous
Four inches of clear, newly-formed ice may support one person on foot, while a foot or more of old, partially-thawed ice may not. Spring ice that has gone through the “freeze-thaw” cycle is weak ice and should be doubled in thickness.
This is especially true near streams, bridges and culverts. Also, the ice on outside river bends is usually weaker due to the undermining effects of the faster current. These areas are often the first to thaw and open up.
Spring ice is inconsistent
Always bring an ice safety kit
Fluctuating spring temperatures can cause ice conditions to change in a short amount of time. It may be a foot thick in one location and only an inch or two just a few feet away.
This would include rope, ice picks, an ice chisel, and a life jacket. Check ice thickness at regular intervals and know how to use the picks to rescue yourself and the rope to rescue others.
For more information on ice safety, contact the MN DNR and ask for our free ice safety publications, which include brochures, or visit mndnr.gov/icesafety.

SPRING 2020
How to Prepare for Spring Boating Learn new boating laws Recent boating laws include Sophia’s Law and Little Alan’s Law. Sophia’s Law became effective May 1, 2018 and requires certain motorboats to install carbon monoxide detectors and warning stickers. Little Alan’s Law went into effect on August 1, 2018 and states that drivers convicted of a DWI will face additional charges no matter the type of vehicle operated during the event.
Assemble navigation and safety equipment The first thing to do in preparation for boating season is gather all your life jackets and throwable devices together in one place and check them for mold, rips, or tears. Replace any life jackets that are no longer serviceable. Your navigation lights are critical to your safety on the water, so make sure they are operational and that you have replacement bulbs on board. Check that emergency equipment like radios and fire extinguishers are in place and in good condition.
Perform vessel maintenance... What exactly this step should entail will depend on the type and size of your boat. At minimum, though, have your engine and all other critical parts and mechanical systems evaluated by a professional and have all fluids changed or topped off. Inspect and replace hoses to prevent carbon monoxide leaks.
...AND trailer maintenance Check the condition of your trailer tires for cracks or lack of tread and replace as necessary. Always ensure tires are properly inflated. Also check all lights, signals, and safety chains.
Make a plan Nothing puts a damper on boating fun like procrastinating to plan your trip. Always check the weather and file a float plan with information on where you will be and when you expect to return. Have properly fitting life jackets available for everyone on board. As the captain, set a good example by always wearing your life jacket.
Top Five Boating Safety Tips 1.
Wear your life jackets, and make sure children wear theirs Children under 10 years of age must wear a USCG–approved life jacket when on board a boat that is underway, unless they are: a. In an enclosed cabin or below deck b. On an anchored boat that is being used as a platform for swimming or diving c. On board a charter (passenger) craft with a licensed captain
38
2.
Stay sober
3.
Tell a friend
4.
Be weather aware
5.
Boat smart
SPRING 2020
Just like driving a car, booze and boating don’t mix. Alcohol is the number one contributing factor in boating fatalities.
Before you head out on the water, always tell someone where you’re going and when you will be back.
Don’t let a storm sneak up on you; keep an eye on the forecast, and if hazardous weather is on the way, either delay your trip or head to shore. Go slow through rough water to avoid capsizing.
Take a boating safety course. Know your boat and suggest others who will be on board take a boating safety course as well. Classes are available either online or in-person through the Minnesota DNR boating safety webpage: www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/boatwater/education.html

CABIN RENOVATION
Four
DO'S and a Don't
40
SPRING 2020
Whether you are purchasing your dream lakefront fixer-upper or making some much-needed updates to the cabin that’s been in your family for generations, here are our biggest tips for what to do— and what not to do—when renovating your lake property. DO consider the whole property The most important part of a lake home is the lake. You can always change a countertop or a light fixture; you can’t change the view. The best way to add value to your lake cabin is to upgrade your outdoor spaces. Build a spacious dock with outdoor seating where you can soak up the sun while watching the kids play in the water, or add an outdoor kitchen to keep the fun going through dinnertime.
DO choose your materials wisely Even if you envision elegant mahogany floors for your lake cabin, consider cost and longevity before you buy. Especially if your property is right on the lakefront; kids, animals, and adults alike will be tracking in water, sand, and mud all summer long, resulting in potentially pricey damage. Vinyl or linoleum flooring is much more resistant to damage at a fraction of the price. And forget about those tacky yellow tiles from your grandmother’s kitchen; with the vast array of options on the market today, you can find a beautiful pattern to fit any budget.
DO protect your cabin from the outside, in Before you get started on any aesthetic changes, make sure that you are working with a sound structure. Start your renovation project by having your cabin’s roof, foundation, and siding inspected for any water or wind damage or general wear and tear. Then, make any necessary fixes to protect your property from the elements.
DO get smart with space While many of us dream of owning a large, luxury lake home, an under-1,000 square foot cabin can provide cozy comfort at a much lower cost. The key to a smaller cabin is to maximize what square footage you do have. Install high shelving units to keep floor space open. Utilize bunk beds for the kids’ room. Make the most of every square foot, even those unexpected, often wasted spaces—how about a reading nook under the stairs, or built-in shoe cubbies in the entryway?
DON’T chase an investment At the end of the day, your lake cabin should be a reprieve from the stress of day-to-day life; a place for you and your family to relax, rejuvenate, and take advantage of the natural beauty that lakes country has to offer. Unless you are purchasing your property for the express purpose of flipping it to sell, don’t get caught up in the return on your investment.
Focus on what works best for your family, not what’s trending. For some, it may be a luxury like a wine cellar; for others, it may be as simple as a fire pit ring, a stick, and a bag of marshmallows. Any renovations you make, as long as they are tailored to you and your family, will become memories that last a lifetime.
Consulting with a financing expert is the best place to begin when considering a cabin renovation. Contact one of the Choice Bank home loan experts today at www.bankwithchoice.com/home-loans LAKE LIFE WKND

REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE BY DIRK OCKHARDT
It’s still cold but the market is active. Are you voting for Lake Life this year? We have experienced many sales during the first couple months of 2020 and it looks like we are going to have many new property owners in Lakes Country this year. This issue of Lake Life wknd is filled with tips and stories about owning property in the area and we like to give you some more market insights here as well. Since our company was founded on April 1, 1980 we have specialized in recreational real estate sales and have grown into a unique lifestyle agency over the past 5 years. With that much experience in the local market we believe it is fair to say that we are experts in our field. When it comes to predicting the future we cannot promise real property value to increase. It is in fact against the law to make such promise. However, looking at historical data it is a fact that the value of properties in West Central Minnesota has significantly increased over the past 4 decades. One thing Jack Chivers always used to say to me was: “they don’t make any more lakes”. Indeed, lake shore property is a special kind of real estate and a very popular one, too.
44
SPRING 2020
That being said, when you find what you have been looking for you should pull the trigger. The past year we have had less properties come available for sale which resulted in less days on market on average until they sold. Again, it feels that people who have been waiting to find their lake home are now making decisions fast. On the other hand we think that many younger families have invested in lake shore property during the past 10 years and are still enjoying lake life. Many owners are not ready yet to let go again of their property which means that new buyers have fewer available properties to choose from. It feels like we have more undeveloped lots available now and buyers are considering to build new. Whatever it is that you are looking for when considering to own real estate in Lakes Country please contact us and we like to make our local expertise your advantage when searching for your future property. Meet the Chivers team on the following page and a collection of currently available properties. You will find all available properties for sale online.

SPRING MEANS TURKEY TIME With the advent of spring coming soon, so begins one of my favorite hunting seasons. Chasing the wild turkey has become one of my passions only next to chasing big whitetail bucks. There is something about watching the sunrise over the woods and hearing roosting turkeys waking up the forest with their gobbling and clucking.
62
SPRING 2020
BY MIKE BROWN
The turkey is a wildlife management success story in Minnesota. Habitat degredation and over hunting wiped out the population in Minnesota, with the last native wild turkey being spotted in the 1880’s. After several relocation attempts in the early 1900’s with out success, Minnesota was without the wild turkey until the 1970s. Wild turkeys were trapped from neighboring states and relocated into southern Minnesota. Habitat conditions were favorable for the turkeys and they expanded their range. Wild turkeys can now be found nearly throughout the entire state.
We have a subspecies of turkey called the Eastern Wild Turkey. They are found essentially from the eastern Dakotas down to Texas and over to the east coast. There are 3 other subspecies found throughout the US as well. The Merriams is found from the mountain ranges of the Rockies to the western part of the Dakotas and down to West Texas. The Rio Grande species is located in the desert areas of the south and west and extend up into Nebraska. Last is the Osceola turkey found only in Florida. Fortunate hunters have an opportunity for a Grand Slam, meaning taking all 4 species of turkeys. Each species has their own characteristics and habitats. The Eastern turkey here in Minnesota needs a combination of forest and uplands to thrive.
Minnesota was without wild turkey until the 1970s, now they can be found throughout the entire state.
Hunting the wild turkey takes some time and scouting. Finding where the turkey’s roost, feed and their travel routes to and from roosting to feeding areas should provide you with some good action. Toms will usually hit the ground and strut, trying to impress the hens. This makes them vulnerable to calling and a decoy set up. They may spend several hours just strutting, before they slowly wander off back into the woods. I have a couple setups, one being on the edge of the woods and field. The hens come out to the fields to feed in the morning with the
Toms in tow. Later morning the hens will move back into the woods. Once all the Toms have cleared the fields, I sneak back into the woods and sit. I have taken many Toms during the early afternoon. Later in the afternoon, its back to the field edge as the hens will be coming out to feed again. I have had great success with this setup. It leaves the turkeys uninterrupted on the roost and allows them to move about without feeling the hunting pressure. There are several other techniques for hunting turkey as well, you will just have to find out what works for you and your hunting area. Turkey hunting is a great way to introduce a kid to hunting. You can hunt any time of the day with success, no need for scent control, hunting in a ground blind allows the kids to move around a bit and remain undetected, and what better way to get someone hooked on the outdoors than by having a strutting, gobbling Tom head to your decoys. Once you have harvested a turkey, you will not find any better table fair. They are a little drier than a store bought bird, but a google search of wild turkey recipes will certainly come up with one that your family will enjoy. Spring is a busy time of year in the outdoors. Shed hunting, crappie fishing, planting food plots to name a few, but don’t forget about the wild turkey and their success story here in Minnesota.
