HOLIDAYS ARE FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
I
n the blink of an eye. That’s how fast it seems to have happened. In my mind it wasn’t that long ago that my home was filled with my children and their large and rowdy assortment of friends. The advent of fall meant Friday nights under the lights for football and marching band, volleyball and a host of FFA activities, including Barnwarming and the annual hog roast. Fall was the beginning of our favorite time of year that culminated with the celebration of the New Year. It’s still our favorite time, and as our family has grown and changed, so have our traditions. I have my parents to thank for passing down many of the traditions that my children and I cherish. The most important of which is holidays are meant to be shared with family and friends, whether it’s gathering for a meal, planning a game night or arguing over where the tree looks best. I have shared with my children the memories of holidays spent at the Lake of the Ozarks. Our family had a “retreat,” as my father called it, on the North Shore. It wasn’t just a summer getaway. It was a year-round destination … the perfect place (in his opinion) to get away from it all to enjoy the peace and quiet. The planning began weeks in advance
10
LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019
and by the time the holidays arrived, the pantry was stocked, there was plenty of wood for the fireplace, and he and his much-loved golden retriever would spend hours in the woods he owned behind his “retreat” choosing the perfect tree. After Thanksgiving dinner, he would gather us all up — we’d race to be the first out the door to get a spot on the wagon to avoid having to trudge along behind. For the record, those who did walk usually had plenty of spiked beverages to keep them warm. Except for the year the tractor got away from him and ended up in the Lake. The tree cutting on Thanksgiving and the lively celebration that followed was nearly picture perfect. As soon as Thanksgiving was over and the tree was up, we started planning for Christmas and the traditions continued — too numerous to mention but definitely making memories that last a lifetime. The traditions continue for us and we hope for you and your family they do as well. No matter how you celebrate or where, have a wonderful time of year.

Year-Round
BOATERS STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the boating season is over
C
old and snowy outside? Sounds like a great time to gas up the boat, or at least these die-hard boaters think so. Winter boating has its perks. It’s always quiet out and some waterfront restaurants are open year-round. No matter the weather, there’s nothing better than spending some time on the Lake.
Tony Neal spends as many weekends as possible at the Lake year-round on his 35’ Silverton Aft Cabin named Malibu Dreamin’. Even if that means it’s snowing. SUBMITTED PHOTOS

LIFE-LONG BOATERS Cory Miller has been boating his entire life, so a little cold weather doesn’t stop him or his family from enjoying the Lake. Miller starting boating with his parents when he was just a few months old on Clinton Lake in Illinois, and he’s been coming to Lake of the Ozarks for as long as he can remember to vacation. During the summer his family enjoys taking their 1988 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer out between the 1-24 mile markers to any restaurant with a kid-friendly pool. Or they like to ride their 2008
Sea Doo GTI SE. During the winter, they still like to boat, but just have to dress in layers. “I enjoy everything about boating off season,” Miller says. “In the fall and spring there is still some amazing weather days. We tubed into midOctober last year. I mostly enjoy the calm — no traffic on the Lake. There are several establishments on the Lake that stay open year-round and there are no crowds there at all.” Last winter the Millers found themselves in the middle of a snowstorm after leaving their home at the 2-mile marker to go to Ozark Yacht Club for fuel and a pump out.

The Millers celebrated New Year’s at Lake House 13 last season. They also visit other waterfront restaurants by boat during the winter. Last year, they took their family and neighbors to Camden on the Lake when snow made it impossible to go by road.
“We came for a weekend in February and it snowed several inches. We could not get out of our complex by road so we took the boat (and our neighbor) to Camden on the Lake for drinks and dinner.” They also took several trips to see Christmas lights on the water, went to a Christmas party at the Hillbilly Yacht Club, and celebrated New Year’s Eve at Lake House 13. “We didn’t want to go home in the dark that late at night so we slept in our boat at their dock and went back New Year’s Day morning.” “There is so much to do at the Lake outside of the normal season. Fall leaf colors are a blast. We like taking the kids to the indoor waterpark at Margaritaville. There’s plenty of entertainment on the Strip. Several on-the-water establishments are open late in the season, early in the season or year-round.”
THE WEEKEND-ER Tony Neal spends most weekends at the Lake throughout the year. He’s been coming to the Lake his entire life — since the early 70s when his parents had a home at the 28-mile marker. He even worked at Run-A-Bout Marina (now Miller’s Landing) as a teenager. With a home on Lake St. Louis, he spends a lot of time boating there and says he’s been on most of the lakes in Missouri and Arkansas along with making a few trips to Florida with a boat in tow. “I need the water,” Neal said. He spends as many weekends as possible at the Lake year-round on his 35’ Silverton Aft Cabin named Malibu Dreamin’. He also has a 1962 13’ Boston Whaler and a couple of jet skis including an 14

One winter, Tony Neal anchored out in Girl Scout Cove for the weekend. When he woke up he was surprised to see it had snowed a couple of inches. “I usually keep cold-weather gear on board so I got suited up and hopped in with my iPhone and swam out for a selfie. It was completely worth it!”
old-school stand-up. On Lake St. Louis he keeps a small sailboat and a couple of kayaks. “I have not winterized my boat in over a decade. My marina does a good job keeping the docks de-iced and lets me know if there is ever an issue,” he said. The beauty of the Lake keeps him coming back for more. “It is a different place every season. Getting to put myself in the middle of that, and often being the only boat out there is humbling and therapeutic.
ENJOYING THE OFF-SEASON Ted Pope has been living at the Lake for more than 60 years. Growing up, the family were part-timers, spending every weekend they could out on the water. In the 60s his parents moved to the Lake full-time and started a boat business at the 4-mile marker on the North Shore. As a teenager, Ted worked at Millstone Lodge and after graduating high school he moved around a bit and even attended a ski school in Orlando, Fla.
Ted Pope loves to fish. Some of his favorite spots include the Upper Osage and Gravois Arm, as well as crappie fishing off the dock.

COLD WEATHER BOATING TIPS
Ted Pope has many fond memories to share about spending a lifetime on the Lake. His sister skied in the first ski show. His job was to ride around in the dark picking up dropped skis or skiers, following the show boats that had spotlights on them for the crowds to see the skiers. He went on to start the Lake Ozark Ski Team, traveling to tournaments all over the Midwest showcasing their talent.
While many boaters in colder parts of the country have winterized their boats or put them into storage until spring, many still use their vessels for hunting, fishing or transportation. Unfortunately, the risk of a deadly accident is increased with cold weather. Extra caution and preparation should be taken before heading out on the water in winter. The importance of wearing a life jacket becomes even more critical when the danger for hypothermia is added to other concerns. Sudden immersion in cold water can have severe physiological consequences, including cardiac arrest, quick loss of body heat (the body loses heat 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air) and involuntary inhalation of water (gasping) that results in drowning. Wearing a life jacket can keep the boaters head above water, keep the person warm, and provide a chance for rescue. Wearing the right clothing also contributes to more enjoyable and safer cold weather boating. Consider layering clothing, and including a wet suit or dry suit, to help ward off hypothermia. Here are some additional tips for safe winter boating: ■ Assess the risks – think what can go wrong and be fully equipped and prepared. ■ Leave a float plan with a responsible individual who knows your intentions, location, and who to call if you fail to return as scheduled. ■ Carry a VHF radio and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), signal flares and other means to draw attention to your location. ■ Be aware of and prepared for the shock of sudden immersion and incapacitating effects of cold water – dress to get wet and carry a change of clothing in a waterproof container. ■ Be aware of activity around your vessel and potential for fastchanging weather. ■ Boat safe and sober – save the alcohol for when you’ve safely returned. ■ Be sure your vessel is in good operating condition and has the necessary safety equipment on board before you leave the dock. ■ Refresh your seamanship skills - take a boating safety course offered by your local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla. “I have boated here year-round since I was four years old,” Ted said. “I used to sit on a stack of boat cushions to drive the boat and see over the console to pull my mom and sister on skis.” As an adult Ted sold insurance in Kansas City but hated city life, so when his Dad asked him to house-sit their property at the Lake, he didn’t think twice. “I just loved the Lake. Even though I tried three times, I just could not leave,” Ted said. Today he sells Playcraft pontoons so there is always a good excuse to get out in a boat. But when he’s off the clock, you’ll often find him in his 21’ tournament fishing boat rigged out to make fishing fun and easy. Along with his wife, Mary and their two children, the family spends most of their time boating from Bagnell Dam to about the 18-mile marker, and up and down the Gravois Arm. On occasion, Ted pitches a jig in the Upper Osage near Warsaw where he says is a great spot to fish. He calls their 28’ Playcraft powertoon X-Treme a dream boat cleverly named Blue Bayou or “blew-by-you” as they like to say. “I’m the only boater I know who ‘winterizes’ their boat during the summer, and just uses it September through April. I just love the winters down here,” Ted says. “I get to slow down and really enjoy nature, and the peace and quiet.”

MAKING MEMORIES AT
PEBBLE BEACH
I
STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAUL LEAHY
n 2010 the U.S. Open was played at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links. My son Michael, who was 18 and attending the University of Missouri at that time, made a comment as we were watching the action on television: “We need to go to Pebble next time they play the U.S. Open there,” he said. Being the dutiful Dad, my reply was “sure we can do that, but that’s a while off, will have to see where life takes us.” The next time the Open was scheduled to be played at Pebble was 2019, some nine years later. Jumping ahead, Michael had graduated

from the University of Missouri Columbia, attended law school and joined the United States Air Force as a JAG attorney and was stationed in England. He had brought it up from time to time over the years that he still planed on attending, but “so much for Pebble” was my thought with him across the pond. We visited him this past January in Europe and after a pint or two he looked at me and said “we’re still going this year right?” So much for him forgetting, so the planning began. I’d already taken leave for a week so we just need to decide which days to attend and book our flights.
Hole No. 7 at Pebble Beach.
The 18th tee at Pebble Beach.
We decided to attend the practice rounds on Monday and Tuesday, and return to Lake of the Ozarks for a visit before he would go back to England. We met in San Francisco on Sunday, June 9 and proceeded south to Santa Cruz where we would be staying. As the excitement was building we drove the 45 minutes to the shuttle pick-up Monday morning for the short 20 minute commute to Pebble. The morning started a little shaky as the bus driver went North on Hwy. 1 instead of South. About 10 minutes into the trip a passenger from behind us went to the front to alert the now embarrassed driver that he was going the wrong way. Once turned around we made it to 17-Mile Drive in Monterey — the famously-scenic road that would take us to Pebble. Entering the grounds we were funneled into the merchandise area which also housed several interactive fan experiences before entering the course halfway up the 1st fairway. The plan was to find Tiger, as he was already on the course playing a practice round. The views on the first couple of holes were pedestrian but once we made it to hole four the course opened up and the picturesque Pacific coastline was everywhere. “Unbelievable” was about all we could say. You see it on television but to see it in person, you just have to experience it. As we waited for Tiger on the tee at four, which shares a tee box with the famous par-3 17th, we just took in the views. Tiger arrived with a huge crowd as always but we managed to be just a few feet from where they hit their tee shots. Tiger and the others hit multiple tee shots on the drivable par-4 to get a feel for what they would hit come Thursday. We followed Tiger the rest of the front nine and had a great view of the iconic par-3 7th hole from the grandstand which plays a meager 112 yards. With the Pacific as the backdrop this short, seemingly easy hole, has derailed many a round. Before Tiger’s group would arrive we witnessed a perfect shot, an ace for Mid-Amateur champion Kevin O’Connell. Making his way into this elite field with his win at the Mid-Amateur earlier in the year, this was surely the highlight of the week as he missed the cut to play the weekend. What a reception he received from the fans. We didn’t care if it was a practice round or not, and I don’t think he did either as he had his phone out videoing his walk to the green. He was met by thunderous applause coming from the huge gallery that was awaiting Tiger and his group. We followed Tiger’s group as they played the eighth and ninth. The crowds were huge and the scenery was dramatic (holes eight through 10

run along the coastline). The residents and visitors of Monterey played and enjoyed the beaches below the cliffs that house the scenic golf links. They seemed oblivious to the action unfolding above them. Tiger’s day was done after nine so we perched ourselves at the huge concession deck adjacent to the ninth fairway to take in the action, have lunch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Pacific. Soon we made our way to the back nine and followed the likes of Jon Rahm, Zach Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, Ernie Els, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson, just to name a few. As we traversed the inward nine watching the action and taking in the breathtaking views we did our best to savor the experience. My first trip to Pebble and my first U.S. Open was everything I could hope for. We reached the iconic 17th hole and ended our journey on possibly the most well-known finishing hole in golf — the par-five 18th. With the left guarded by Stillwater Cove, the fairway doglegs left around the cove and finishes with a breathtaking approach that so many of us have seen on television for years. It was a great day and one we won’t forget. My major championship attendance is almost complete as I have been to the Masters, PGA Championship and now a U.S. Open. Only the Open Championship across the pond eludes me. After spending a few days with me at Pebble Beach, my son returned to England, and in July, spent the weekend in Northern Ireland at the Royal Portrush Golf Club for the Open Championship, equaling my major championship attendance at three. Only a Masters visit eludes him. It’s a race now to see if Michael can secure a coveted Masters ticket or if I will get to attend the Open Championship first. Maybe will do them together … that would be something special.

ou’ve seen it on TV, you’ve read about it, you’ve dreamed about it … now let’s plan your golf trip to Pebble Beach and play the No. 1 rated public golf course in America! Pebble has been described as perhaps the best walk on Earth, so when you play make sure to take advantage of the caddy program and forgo the cart. You won’t mind being a little tired after this round. If you decide that you can’t live without the cart, be reminded that carts have to remain on the cart paths at all times, so you will probably get more steps in this way than with a caddy. The best way to play Pebble, and the other courses at the resort, is by staying on the property. Guests of the Lodge at Pebble Beach may book tee times 18 months in advance, but a two-night minimum is required. If you are not a Lodge guest the odds of playing diminish considerably as the general public can book tee times a day in advance. The busiest time to visit is April through November but the Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay, and Casa Palmero are all year-round resorts. The Lodge at Pebble Beach and Casa Palmero are adjacent to one another but the Inn at Spanish Bay is approximately seven miles away. A courtesy shuttle is available to transport guests between the resorts and the golf courses so park your car and enjoy! Weather on the Peninsula can be an issue as wind is typical and rain is common. The average high temperatures at Pebble range between 60 and 70 degrees year-round. Dress in layers and always have a water-resident wind shirt in your bag for those cool mornings or that quick rain shower. With the chilly temperatures be reminded that Pebble and the other courses are denim-free zones, so get yourself a nice warm pair of slacks for the occasion. If you are planning more than one round you don’t have to look far as the resort offers public golf options Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay. These courses are also ranked on Golf Digest’s Top 50 Public Course list. Along with these courses the resort owns Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey and a nine-hole par-3 course adjacent to Pebble. Both are open to the public. Don’t waste another minute. To start planning, go to www.pebblebeach.com to explore the Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach. Watch the four live camera feeds of your favorite holes to see what you would look like as you tee off on the first tee or finish on the 18th green. Check out availability to find the perfect date and don’t forget to explore historic 17-Mile Drive. There is more than just golf on the Peninsula so pick your dates, plan your golf times, and spend a few extra days just enjoying the views, sights and beauty of the Pacific coast. STORY BY KAREN THORNTON
re you ready for the season of hosting, baking, entertaining and cleaning? If you live right here at the most beautiful of winter wonderlands you will be looking for convenient and close shopping as well as entertainment for you and your guests. Do you shop first or start baking? Celebrating the holidays from Thanksgiving to Christmas requires easy appetizers, fabulous meals, and eye-catching deserts. If I can make dazzling desserts, believe me you can, too. My overall dessert menu is three easy ingredients or semi-homemade. The real key is the “pan”! In the next few weeks deciding to re-organize any room may not be the best decision but you may want to spruce up your home for guests in order to make it festive. Adding new linens to your bed and bath, and a few scented candles will make your home retreat ready. Don’t go overboard. Add a few touches, close the door, and don’t revisit.

Hostess with the Mostest Now that your home is in order, it’s time to put a list together. Shopping and preparation doesn’t have to be a chore. A list is a great way to feel accomplished as you cross off each item. If turkey is your usual Thanksgiving meal, there are many options. You can actually visit a farm to order your turkey, or give them a call to reserve one. Having a farm-fresh turkey

is the most honest form of fresh to your table. Order as soon as you know how many you will be serving — the earlier the better. Bechard Farms, just 25 minutes north of Springfield, enjoys showing families around the farm. Be sure to call for hours of operation and check them out online. They’ve also got chicken, beef, lamb and pork to choose from if you’d rather do something a little untraditional. What about a ham from Burgers’
Smokehouse in California, Mo. It has been a family-owned business since 1927. Just under a three hour drive, you can take a tour of the original Ham House and museum but it will make you very hungry. Thankfully you can order lunch and then pick up your ham on the way out the door. Visiting Burgers’ is a great experience for the whole family. They don’t just sell hams, but many of the additions to make a great meal, from appetizers to sides. While you are there, they have a gift shop with items that appeal to most of the adults on your gift list. Be sure and preview the online catalog. If you find yourself in a pinch at the last minute, you can purchase that fresh turkey right off of Amazon — includes free shipping and arrives in a couple days. Locally, you can find what you need at The Butcher Shop in Camdenton. If you like to hunt, they can process your wild game but they also offer fresh, ready-toeat meals. All you have to do is place an order or stop by and pick-up any of the homemade items found on the shelves. A treat you don’t want to miss, in any season, is exploring Mennonite Country. Drive north on Highway 5 from Sunrise Beach to Versailles and enjoy the beautiful countryside reflecting the reason we live here. Your destination is Weaver’s Country Market. They have everything you need to host a dinner party, including your main entrée and desert. Walnuts and pecans are available in quantities reasonably priced for your holiday baking. Other shops in the area provide home-grown fruits and vegetables, and fresh pies and other desserts. There are more than 80 in the area. You can find a map of each spot at Weaver’s to direct you to other locations. During the weekend of November 15 & 16, the community will host a holiday open house. Call any local store in Versailles for information. It’s a great time for gift shopping! If you’d rather let someone else do all of the work, there are plenty of Thanksgiving buffets offered at many Lake area restaurants and larger hotels in the Lake area. They always have a huge spread of holiday favorites, seafood and desserts making it easy to indulge without having to lift a finger. Just think … you won’t even have to do the dishes. A Thanksgiving tradition for some is to

Deck the Halls Following Thanksgiving by 26 days is Christmas. Sure you have your “old standby artificial tree,” but how about a live one this year? Ozark Valley Christmas Tree Farm, about three hours from Osage Beach, is open during the season from November 29-December 24. What a great tradition with your family, friends and grandchildren. It really is more than just a place to buy a tree, it is a whole day of fun. Bring your gift list, they have a fabulous shop. The kids can make crafts in the barn and you can also have the annual family picture taken. Enjoy hot chocolate and a sweet treat (don’t forget, extra sweets for the unexpected company) and Christmas lights. Oh, of course, don’t forget to pick out a tree. Check online for times. If you love a beautifully-decorated tree but not all the hassle of decorating it, attend the Gala of Trees at Wobbly Boots November 20-23. The trees are decorated by local businesses and volunteers and range from elegant to fun (like a tree decorated with dozens of tiny bottles of liquor). The highest bidder in this silent auction gets to take their tree home to show off to their guests.

M
issouri opened the western frontier to cattle and agriculture. Cattle drives passing through still have a proud heritage in the slow-smoked meats that feed the Heartland. One restaurant keeping that heritage alive in 2019 is Barn-B-Que Smokehouse, a quick-service restaurant in a fine, old barn. Opened in May 2019, Barn-B-Que occupies land just below Li’L Rizzo’s on Horseshoe Bend Parkway. The proximity isn’t coincidental. Bill Borders owns all three restaurants — the new Barn-B-Que Smokehouse and both Li’L Rizzo’s locations at the Lake. Barn-B-Que’s home is an Oak Harbor, Ohio barn dating from the 1850s. The beams, roof, floor, and wood pegs are original. In fact, the barn is 100 percent original. It was tagged, disassembled, transported, and reassembled in Lake Ozark. Mighty hand-hewn beams and farm implements transformed into fine chandeliers make the restaurant a museum for 19th-century craftsmanship. When Borders decided to use the barn as a restaurant, he wanted cuisine that matched the setting. Smoked meat and ranch-style sides were a natural fit.
Customers enjoy meat smoked that business day. The smoker fires up to slow roast pork, chicken, beef brisket and ribs, or turkey twice daily. Customers can also count on their portions being pulled at order — not smoked, pulled, and stored for use later. This practice helps the meat retain full flavor. Tempting sides include handcut fresh fries, slaw, potato salad, green beans, and Grandma Jayne’s Camp Beans, named in honor of the recipe’s creator, Jayne Trick, Borders’ mother-in-law. She’s also responsible for the desserts — a tart blackberry cobbler, pies, and cakes. Sides and smoked meats are available by single order and carry-out in the restaurant as well as in larger quantities for catering. The brisket and Camp Beans have proven to be popular choices in the first months of operation. While some diners prefer smoked meat without sauce, many more enhance the flavors with one of the five available. These sauces are made from scratch and unique to the restaurant. Barn-B-Que strives to set that standard for most items on the menu. The result is delicious, meaty foods in a fine, historical building that keeps the tradition of early settlements alive and well here at the Lake.

I
f you’ve ever dined at the Royal Catch Bar & Grill, you may have had the chance to meet executive chef Rodney Bachtel. “I have a really deep passion for food,” Bachtel said. “I like to walk the floor during food service to ask about the experience guests receive. It’s my job to meet high expectations.” With four culinary degrees and over 40 years of experience in high-end restaurants, Bachtel is creating a unique experience for hotel guests and locals who come into the Regalia Conference & Event Center to dine at one of the many restaurants. “We want to bring the best high-end culinary experience the Lake has ever seen,” he said. The hotel’s flagship restaurant, Royal Catch Bar & Grill, offers a classic breakfast menu, a full lunch menu and a variety of entrées for dinner including steaks, seafood and pasta. Bachtel is in the process of making changes to the menus and wants to implement more of a scratch kitchen using fresh herbs grown on-site, and the highest quality meat and seafood available. In the future Bachtel would like to offer table-side stations, where chefs come to your table to make a fresh pasta dish or dessert in order to give diners more of an experience. He’s also planning to host celebrity chefs for special events.

Tips, tricks and time-honored ways to decorate for the holidays. STORY COMPILED BY CHARIS PATIRES
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … the leaves are falling, winter is setting in, and holiday décor already fills store shelves. Are you planning to drag out those dusty boxes of Christmas decorations from the garage, or do you want something a bit more elegant this year? Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to be difficult. Creating an elegant space to host your holiday parties just takes a bit of planning. Thanks to a collaboration between Evergreen in Osage Beach and interior decorator Cara Massie, of Cara Massie Design, we’ve put together a beautifully-decorated Lake home that will give you ideas and inspiration to decorate for the holidays.

WHERE TO BEGIN
U S E W H AT ’ S ALREADY THERE These wall-mounted Restoration Hardware sconces were already part of the home. Cara added simple 24” cyprus wreaths to the lights located on the main floor for a festive touch. “Oftentimes less is more when decorating for the holidays. Greenery can be beautiful on its own without being adorned with ornaments, bows or glitter,” she said. 42

When decorator Cara Massie takes on a project to decorate a home, the architecture often dictates the kind of décor that will be used. This Adirondack-style lakefront home with exposed trusses, stone fireplaces, cedar shake and shiplap ceilings, all influenced the elements brought into the design. “Walk through your house and let that be the starting point to your design,” Cara says. “Pay attention to the architectural style and details that will influence what you choose so that you have a cohesive look. We played upon this property’s gorgeous stained wood and natural stone by adding natural elements and a ton of greenery. Christmas decor that is shiny, sparkly or glittery would have looked totally out of place.”
LET THERE BE LIGHT “I understand the importance of decorating the lake side of a waterfront home. This property offers a gorgeous gas fire pit on the back deck so we added lit garland to the deck railings,” Cara said. A lit 60” wreath affixed to the gable over the top deck gives boaters passing by a warm holiday greeting.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Cara says if you are keeping your holiday decorating minimal this season consider at the very least adding exterior lights and something festive to the front door to create a warm welcome for your guests. Always, consider the scale of your home so that your outdoor decorations look appropriately sized in comparison to the front of your home. This expansive covered porch and oversized door called for oversized wreaths and decorations. Instead of a traditional wreath on the front door, Cara designed a custom wicker basket filled with artificial mixed Christmas greens that will look fantastic all season long. What you see: An oversized 42” lit wreath on the front gable. Garland was placed around the stone columns and pine teardrop swags were added to the porch support posts. On the front stoop, Cara layered in resin battery operated candles (outdoor rated), mixed greenery, frosted birch trees, and additional lighting. The 48” tall galvanized metal lanterns found at Evergreen were designed to include artificial mixed greenery, wooden orbs and large sugar pinecones. You’ll find that juniper, cedar, and long needle pine are repeated throughout the home to make the design cohesive. Cara carried a similar holiday look from the front porch throughout to make the transition seamless.

CUSTOMIZE IT Instead of a traditional tree skirt, Cara had this custom tree box made to hide the tree trunk and stand. Team member Cameron Craig built this wooden tree box to be in proportion with the tree. The custom box has hinges on each corner so it can be easily disassembled and folded flat to store during the off season.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX What home would be complete without a Christmas tree? This 12’ tall tree is filled with a variety of natural elements and understated decor pieces. Cara’s designer tip for tree trimming is to always incorporate floral picks and sprays in a variety of textures, shapes and sizes. Even in subdued designs a small amount of well-placed shimmer will help your tree sparkle at night as light bounces off metallic and glass surfaces. Notice repeat elements, like the gold bells in various sizes were used. Small lanterns with timers and wooden decorative balls were wired into the tree.
C R E AT E A F O C A L P O I N T On the fireplace mantle the central focal piece is this large painting of Santa Claus. Four Christmas trees (4 foot and 2 foot tall) were used to frame the painting. A custom mantlepiece was created with dry floral foam and artificial juniper, pine, magnolia, cedar and pine cones. Notice how a centerpiece was created with antique gold sleigh bells to match the bells in the painting. PHOTO BY ROBERT WESTON BRESHEARS

P R A CT I C A L A N D U N D E R S TAT E D When working with open concept main levels you’ll want to carry your holiday decor into the heart of the home; the kitchen space. Since kitchens are also the most used space in your home it’s important to implement decorations that won’t impede cooking, cleaning and dining. Christmas decor was styled on these stacked red rectangular trays

so that it can easily be moved to accommodate meal prep or dining (middle photo). Cara likes to use battery operated candles on timers programed to turn on as soon as the sun starts to set. It creates a warm, cozy feeling in the winter when it gets darker earlier in the day. Cara added three tiered white footed bowls with red trim to this butcher block
island (pictured left). She added pinecone ornaments, bells and small wreaths for a pop of holiday decor that is easy to disassemble. These trays would also be adorable styled with Christmas cookies and cocoa! A cedar wreath was hung above the expansive gas range and long needle pine garland was placed on top of the kitchen cabinetry.
E N T E R TA I N I N G G U E S T S Dinner guests will feel right at home under the candle lit chandelier swagged with greenery and an elegant tablescape. Juniper and long needle pine greenery adorn the table, and 18” wreaths with bows were wired to the Captain’s chairs. Dining centerpieces don’t need to be overly done. Usually some well-placed greenery and candles will do the trick and allow your guests to converse easily. Glass lamps from Evergreen placed on the sideboard have fillable bases allowing the designer to change its contents with the seasons. For winter, Cara added greenery, antlers, pinecones and copper bells. These could easily be swapped out for faux pumpkins in the fall, or pieces of driftwood during the summer lake season.

JUST A TOUCH All it takes are a few decorative elements to bring the holiday spirit to any room. In the master bathroom shower, a large cedar wreath was hung on the glass window while some of the same trees used on the mantel were placed in front of the bathtub fireplace. A custom greenery swag was affixed to the stone above the fireplace.

I N C O R P O R AT I N G A D I F F E R E N T D E S I G N The homeowner’s favorite space is the sunroom and it’s easy to see why! Offering a gorgeous view of the main channel, custom upholstery with a coastal nod and a light, bright and airy feel it’s the perfect spot to settle in with a magazine and a cup of coffee. To play on the decor already in place, Cara choose to create a design incorporating nautical elements with blue and green colors throughout. “While lake-themed design might look out of place in a Christmas tree in other parts of the state, it was a ton of fun to add some nautical flair to the Christmas decor in a Lake home!”
This 6’ King of Christmas flocked Christmas tree is decorated with driftwood, frosted fern, boxwood and asparagus fern. Wired green burlap ribbon was woven into the tree and was also used to wrap some of the gifts under the tree. Burlap fabric was draped under the tree in lieu of a traditional tree skirt. Cara suggests selecting decorative pieces that have other uses. The blue woven balls from Evergreen incorporated into the tree would look great in a decorative bowl on the coffee table after the season. When working with secondary trees not in the main living area Cara loves to style under the tree with home decor pieces. In this sunroom she added wooden buoys, netted glass weights and a wooden lantern to fill the space between the floor and the branches.

The exclusive designs and décor featured throughout this home can be found at Evergreen in Osage Beach. The store offers everything you need to add a personal touch to your home for any season. They also have the largest selection of silk flowers in the Midwest and a Flower Bar where designs are created. Evergreen is located at 6711 US-54 in Osage Beach and is open April 1-December 31. www.evergreenatthelake.com.
In the corner of the master bedroom, oversized wooden lanterns filled with greenery and candles make it easy to add holiday decor to the room without overdoing it. Cara loves to use lanterns as part of any home decor because they are so versatile, and can be used indoor or out. She has hosted sold-out workshops on how to design decorative lanterns and transition them throughout the seasons. This bedroom corner would also make a great space to add another Christmas tree. However, for the second homeowner who doesn’t want to spend much time packing away home decor after the holidays, these lanterns were a perfect fit.

H O L I D AY D E C O R AT I N G T I P S 1. Don’t be afraid to include your personal style. Your holiday design should be reflective of the family who lives there. 2. Don’t ditch your heirloom or sentimental ornaments in order to achieve a “designer tree.” Incorporating items handed down over the years hold special Christmas memories for you and your loved ones! Figure out how to add them to your tree or create a secondary tree with all of the mementos from past Christmas
celebrations. 3. Cara says she likes to add “unexpected elements” that may not be considered typical tree ornaments. Home decor pieces, lanterns, oversized orbs and driftwood were all used in this holiday decorating project. 4. Adding lighting with strands of Christmas lights and battery operated candles will give your home a warm glow all the way into February. Look for
battery operated lit garland for tricky areas like mantles and bannisters that don’t offer easy access to electric outlets 5. Decorating early in the season will help you better enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends. Reduce stress by putting up your decor before Thanksgiving so you can dedicate more time to entertaining, sipping cocoa by the fireplace and marveling at how tranquil the Lake area is during the winter months.

ABOUT CARA MASSIE DESIGN Although Cara Massie is a Kansas City resident her heart belongs to Lake of the Ozarks where she has a second home. “My grandparents had a Lake home on the 38 MM and my fondest memories are of spending time on the water with my family. My husband Tom and I knew we wanted the same experience for our children. We purchased our home on the 10 MM off Horseshoe Bend in 2017 and couldn’t be happier.” Cara loves working with homeowners and retailers in the Kansas City market where she also holds regular televised decorating segments for KCTV5 - but waterfront design and decorating has been a dream since childhood. “Designing outdoor spaces meant for entertaining, hosting guests and enjoying time with those you love most is my all-time favorite. Being able to partner with Lake homeowners to achieve not only beauty, but also comfortable surroundings that encourages leisure and recuperation fills me with joy. We all lead such fast-paced lives and I delight in creating waterfront properties that bring people together. Playing cards on a well-designed dock, grilling out on the back deck and lounging in comfortable great rooms is what Lake Life is all about!” Cara loves leading live decorating workshops and sharing tips, tricks and inspiration online for decorating with confidence. She has a public speaking degree from Mizzou. “Any time I can marry my public speaking experience with my love of decorating I’m in my happy place! Winter WONDERLAND BY CHARIS PATIRES
These homeowners bring new meaning to the phrase decorating for the holidays — it’s more like a Griswold Family Christmas. It takes months to prepare and put up their holiday decorations before being unveiled to family, friends, neighbors and even passersby who stop to take a peek at the festive lights. From music timed to the movement of lights to dozens of decorated Christmas trees, check out how these families celebrate Christmas at the Lake.
Last holiday season, Stacy and Katie Roberts made quite a scene in their neighborhood. Their 36,000 LED light show, computer programmed and synchronized to holiday music, drew people from all over the Lake area who pulled into the Camelot Estates subdivision to check it out. They plan to come back bigger and better this year — with more twinkling lights than the infamous Griswold house. Preparations begin weeks in advance to get ready to unveil The Roberts Family Christmas Display just after Thanksgiving. The Roberts have lived in the neighborhood for about 20 years, and have always decorated for Christmas, but really started going overboard within the last couple of years by adding more and more displays, lights and eventually sounds of the season. A few years ago, Stacy decided to synchronize the lights and displays to holiday music. He set up a FM transmitter that broadcasts the songs on a local radio frequency so anyone coming by car can pull over to watch and listen as the displays move to the beat of the music. 52
LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019
A lot of work goes into creating the display each year. It can take as long as eight hours to program one song and as many as 100 hours to put it all together. The family is thankful that their neighbors are such good sports to welcome the increase in traffic and onlookers. Their goal is just to spread some Christmas cheer.

Each year Melissa Archidino keeps an eye out for Christmas decorations so she can add them to her collection. In order to put out all of her holiday décor, she has to move furniture, and in some cases, remove items including pictures on the wall to be able to fit it all in her Sunrise Beach home. Spread out among her three-story home are more than 40 large Christmas trees and over 100 various-sized 4-foot-or-smaller ones. Each tree has a different theme, and each has a unique topper, too. Her favorite tree is the angel tree, dedicated to her mom who passed away in 2005. That’s when Melissa started taking more of an interest in decorating for the holidays. Starting in October, she brings the decorations out of the warehouse and begins to create a winter wonderland. Everything has to be up and ready for get-togethers with family and friends who are
lucky enough to get an invitation to one of her holiday parties. She’s so well-known for her impressive decorating skills that her friends now buy her items they run across while out shopping. Due to the amount of time it takes to decorate, Melissa has started alternating which holiday she decorates for each year — Halloween/Thanksgiving/ fall or Christmas.
While Melissa points out it’s faster to take everything down, there’s no rush to put an end to the season. “They are so beautiful, I’m in no hurry to take them down,” she says. PROVIDED PHOTOS
Hundreds of Christmas trees are strategically placed around Melissa Archidino’s Sunrise Beach home. Each one has a different theme — from snowmen to santas — and are meticulously decorated. In some cases she will use a lot of natural elements including tree limbs that are painted and placed among the décor. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Unique, Original Art
F
ARTIST COLETTE MOORE TURNS BOTTLE CAPS INTO IMAGES
STORY BY CONNYE GRIFFIN + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL GRIFFIN
or most people, a bottle cap is a thing of beauty only when it’s snapped off, opening the way to quenching a powerful thirst. Few people pay close attention to the cap’s design and color. Colette Moore is one who does. A friend handed Colette a bucket full of bottle caps some years ago and said, “Do something with these.” That friend somehow sensed that Colette would know just what to do, and she did. Colette transforms the humble bottle cap into works of art that sell far and wide. Three of her works are on display and for sale at Lake Fine Art Academy and Galleria in Osage Beach. Colette also sells through an Etsy store, ColetteHomeArt. Those bottle caps in a bucket first went to work as
charms for backpacks, keychains, and bags. The sale of them helped to fund a Boonville animal rescue and education group. They also helped spread the word about Colette’s interest in bottle caps. She still receives shipments of donated caps from friends and strangers. Her collection numbers in the thousands. Some caps have been sorted by color and design. Two drawers are full of Miller Lite caps, one for the current design and another for the design no longer available. More drawers jingle when opened to reveal a jumble of clean caps in every color. Colette has moved on from charms to bottle-cap mosaics. The standard size is 2 by 2 feet, but larger works, including one above Wild Bill’s Sport Salon in Fargo, ND and a horse in mid-stride in storage at Parkway Motors, are 4 by 6.
Artist Colette Moore is shown in her home studio. On the table is a work in progress. Moore’s art is on display and for sale at Lake Fine Art Academy and Galleria in Osage Beach. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Artist Colette Moore kneels in front of a multi-drawer cabinet for caps sorted by color.
The subject for most of Colette’s mosaics is a beloved pet rendered lifelike in bottle caps — a feat that only an artist can achieve. When finished, the bottle caps resemble the fine textures of fur, whether on a dog or horse. This is Colette’s gift. She transforms hardedge materials so that they appear to be downy coats worn by animals she’s rescued, fostered, or made immortal for customers who commission a portrait of their fur-ever friends. A finished work begins with a photo of the pet. That photo becomes a larger sketch on white board. Acrylic paints
add depth and dimension to guide Colette’s hand as she hammers and trims caps. Once all the caps are in place, they are stained to add highlights, expression, and depth. The result will amaze. A portrait is also exacting work, requiring attention to detail — not unlike the career Colette trained for at Stephens College in Columbia where she earned a degree in accounting. That has paid off even though she is not a working accountant. She is instead an entrepreneur who understands profit and loss well enough to succeed with a series of
small businesses. Over the course of Colette’s career, she has flipped houses and now stages them for realtors and sellers. Her designs enhance the visual impact of the space and the seller’s return on investment. Colette and her partner also own and operate Parkway Motors in Osage Beach. Colette’s favorite pastime is the time she “spends … creating commission works of art along with her own inspired pieces.” Driven to create, she uses the humble, often-discarded bottle cap to make art that endures.
A series of photos that shows the process from start to finish.

When Jeff and Kayla Buckley decided to get married at the Lake, they wanted something simple that the whole family could be involved in. They booked a lakefront home for five days where their parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews also stayed, and held a ceremony on the deck by the water.
Jeff and Kayla were married August 4, 2019 at a lake house in Sunrise Beach. The Lake was a close destination for family to be able to drive and for them to enjoy a summer vacation with the kids. They spent the days on the boat, exploring caves and relaxing on the dock. Their wedding day started with breakfast and a boat ride with family before going back to the house for a nap and getting ready for the ceremony. “It was such a relaxing day,” Kayla said. Kayla’s son walked her down the many stairs to where the officiant, Gregg Peckham, performed the ceremony by the Lake.

Kayla made her own bouquet to coordinate with the flowers on her dress. Jeff’s youngest daughter was adamant about being the flower girl, so Kayla made her a bouquet as well. There were vases with flowers on the deck for decoration and the girls wore different dresses — blush, navy and navy-flowered — to coordinate with Kayla’s. The boys wore white long-sleeve shirts with khaki shorts or pants. Their kids range in ages from 5 to 17.
Jeff and Kayla graduated from Concordia High School but they didn’t meet each other until they were adults. After high school Jeff went to Cloud County Community College and began farming. He purchased his great-great grandfathers farm, Buckley Homestead in Cloud County, Kansas and made it his home. He has four children from a previous marriage. Kayla attended Brown Mackie College of Nursing where she received her nursing license. She has three children from her first marriage. When Kayla moved back to Concordia, mutual friends introduced them and they hit it off. “We understand each other and when we are together life is so easy, even on our hardest days,” Kayla said. When Jeff was ready to propose, he made sure all of the kids were in on it, asking Kayla’s oldest son for permission. During an afternoon fishing trip on their pond with the kids, he got down on one knee and proposed. “It was just as I would have wanted it,” Kayla said. “Me, him and our children. The kids were so excited. We continued to enjoy the day with each other.”

NEW IMPROVED and
FIND FREEDOM WITH TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT BY ANITA HARRISON
Living life to the fullest is hard to do with constant joint pain. “A bad shoulder, hip or knee can make everyday life a struggle,” says Lake Regional Orthopedic Surgeon Ryan Morris, D.O. “Normal things that people take for granted — walking around a store, going up stairs, even sleeping — become a lot harder to do. Total joint replacement can provide relief.”
70
reason joints need replaced. Arthritis can damage the cushion of cartilage within a joint until bones begin to rub against bones, causing pain and stiffness. “If you’ve tried other treatments for joint pain, such as physical therapy and steroid medications, but haven’t found relief, it may be time to consider joint replacement surgery,” Dr. Morris says.
WHY IT’S DONE
SURGERY MIGHT BE A GOOD OPTION IF:
In total joint replacement, an orthopedic surgeon rebuilds the worn-out joint with metal, plastic or ceramic parts. The parts are either cemented in place or positioned in a way that allows bone to grow into the components. Severe arthritis is by far the most common
• Your shoulder, hip or knee is weak and hard to move. • Joint pain limits your daily activities, like getting dressed, using a toilet or bathing. • Your shoulder, hip or knee hurts even when you rest, and it keeps you awake at night.
LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019
GET READY Lake Regional Health System offers a free Total Joint Camp on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. In two hours, patients learn what to expect before, during and after total joint replacement surgery. The class includes tips from physical and occupational therapists, dietitians and social workers, as well as education from nurses. “Our goal is to help patients recover more quickly and prepare for an active lifestyle with their new joint,” says Mary Overman, R.N., a Lake Regional nurse navigator who leads patients through the entire joint replacement experience, from preparing for surgery to recovering at home. “The camp also helps reduce the anxiety patients feel before their procedure because they learn how to recover safely during camp.” Learn more about the Lake Regional Orthopedics team at lakeregional.com/orthopedics. Anita Harrison is a PR Specialist at Lake Regional Health System.
YOUR BEFORE-SURGERY CHECKLIST • Do all your assigned exercises to prepare you for recovery. • Address health issues that could increase the risk of complications, such as obesity, uncontrolled diabetes and smoking. • Make your home recovery-friendly by removing tripping hazards (including rugs), installing grab bars in the bathroom and borrowing adaptive devices, such as a shower chair, a walker or crutches to make it easier to get around.
DOES AGE MATTER? Doctors used to recommend patients wait until they were 65 for joint replacement because new joints do not last forever — usually 15 years is a good expectation. “But many people struggling with joint pain in midlife don’t want to wait until they are retired to get help,” Dr. Morris says. “Many decide, ‘I want good mobility now, and if I need a second surgery later, I’m OK with that.’”
TOTAL ANKLE REPLACEMENT Ankles are another joint that sometimes need replaced. Lake Regional Podiatrist Cody Fox, DPM, FACFAS, is board certified in foot and ankle surgery and provides total ankle replacement. Learn more at lakeregional.com/footandankle.

RETIREMENT AGE
DID YOU KNOW? Info and tips for seniors
A 2017 report from the World Economic Forum recommended that the richest countries across the globe raise their retirement ages in order to prevent the collapses of pension systems. Full retirement age in the United States varies depending on when a person was born, though it’s currently between age 65 and 67. In Canada, eligible residents can begin receiving their full Canada Pension Plans at age 65. But longer life expectancies among today’s men and women as well as considerably longer life expectancies for babies born today is partly why the World Economic Forum recommended raising the age at which people can begin receiving their full benefits. Pension funds have been unable to keep pace as people are living longer but still retiring around the same age as they have for decades. That will create a considerable shortfall by 2050, when the World Economic Forum predicts eight countries, including the United States, Canada, India, and China among others, will face a combined pension fund shortfall of $400 trillion.

SAVVY SENIORS
Over the last decade, seniors have become increasingly more savvy in regard to social media usage. The Pew Research Center found that, in 2015, around 35 percent of people age 65 and older reported using social media. That’s a large jump from just 2 percent in 2005. As of 2016, 65 percent of people between the ages 50 and 64 reported using social media, according to Pew. Social media usage among seniors continues to climb, although young adults still comprise the demographic most likely to use it. Among seniors ages 50 and older, Facebook is by far the most popular social media platform used, followed by Pinterest and LinkedIn.

GET MOVING
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strength-training activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being physically active.
BACK TO SCHOOL
Men and women over 50 who are considering returning to school may be eligible for financial assistance through various programs. According to the American Association of Retired Persons, older men and women who want to go back to school do not necessarily have to bankroll that expenditure on their own. AARP notes that the Internal Revenue Service offers tax breaks such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit that older students can take advantage of to lessen the blow of tuition costs, which have risen considerably since today’s men and women over 50 were in college. Older men and women may also be able to take advantage of 529 college savings accounts they opened for their children that their kids did not end up needing. AARP also notes that men and women over 50 who want to apply for financial aid must be prepared to enroll in more than one class and in more than just a continuing education program. More information is available at aarp.org.

HOUSING EXPENDITURES
According to a study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, housing is the greatest expense in dollar amount and as a share of total expenditures for households in which a person 55 and older is considered the primary owner or renter of the home. Total annual household expenditures, which were culled from the BLS’ 2014 Consumer Expenditure Survey, totaled just over $49,000. These expenditures included food, housing, clothing, transportation, health care, and entertainment, among other expenses. The BLS study found that housing accounted for nearly one-third of annual household expenditures in households headed by people age 55 and older. In households headed by people between the ages of 65 and 74, housing expenses accounted for a slightly smaller percentage of overall annual expenditures, while housing accounted for 36.5 percent of overall expenditures in households headed by men and women age 75 and older. Such figures illustrate the need for men and women to account for housing expenses in their retirement planning.
MYTHS ABOUT HEART DISEASE
Heart disease can affect just about anyone. While it was once widely and mistakenly considered a man’s disease, since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease. According to the Harvard Medical School, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over age 65, just as it’s the leading killer of men. Myths abound with regard to heart disease and heart attack risk. One such myth that prevails is that a person who has heart disease should avoid all exercise. However, cardiologists advise that physical activity can help to strengthen the heart, which will improve blood flow to the brain and internal organs. Those who want to exercise should speak with their doctors about which types of exercise are right for them. In the interim, begin with some low-intensity walking, as this is usually a safe, low-impact way to improve personal health.
UNDERSTANDING ALZHEIMER’S
Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association® notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Last Man Standing NEW WINTER RACE IS THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE
A
STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES
ndy Emerson is used to long distance running. He’s completed 78 ultramarathons — all in the name of fun. Last year he became known as the last man standing after running for more than 20 hours in a new event held at the Lake in December. 4 Fore 30 is a more than 4-mile course that gives participants an hour to complete (as fast or as slow as they want) before having to do it all over again at the top of every hour. The last man standing is deemed the winner. For Emerson that meant running from the crack of dawn when the race started and finishing at about 2 a.m.
the following day. His strategy was to run at a “fairly easy” pace, giving himself 8-10 minutes to rest before having to take off for another loop. While a good portion of the race is in the day, when the sun goes down, it gets cold and some runners start to drop off. Having the event at a golf course makes it easy for spectators to watch and for racers to go inside and warm up in between laps. Emerson says the hardest part about the race is when it is down to the last two runners. “One of us has to stop at some point,” he says. “You have a lot of conflicting feelings.” When his competitor tapped out at mile 84, Emerson made one final loop and called it a night. Organizers and running enthusiasts
Scott Page and Alysia Maschino decided to organize this new event, patterned after the Big Backyard Ultra held in Tennessee, an event that Emerson has completed five times. Over the summer Emerson finished a 100K in Colorado. His longest was a 48 hour race in Milwaukee where he completed 130 miles on an indoor track. Page says those who participate in these types of events just want to try something different. “It is a novelty for a lot of people — to see how far they can go,” he said. “There are a certain number of runners who get comfortable with whatever they are doing. Occasionally you just want to shake it up and do something different.”
