DAY TRIP by Marci DeWolf, More Content Now
Explore K.C. via taqueria
K
ansas City, Kansas’ new Taco Trail highlights 50 taquerias with a map to navigate a vibrant culinary adventure. Within the last decade, the taco scene here has exploded, making Kansas City among the go-to U.S. destinations for local, authentic tacos. Why tacos? KCK, as the locals call it, is a melting pot of many cultures, represented in art, historical sites and the culinary scene. More than 70 languages are spoken within the city’s public school districts. “Tacos play a key part in connecting our neighborhoods in Kansas City, Kansas,” said Alan Carr, executive director of the KCK Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The KCK Taco Trail supports local mom and pop shops that showcase some of the best taquerias in the city.” The growing Hispanic population led to the popularity of taquerias, a Mexican restaurant specializing in tacos. Most of the restaurants are small, immigrant-owned, with primarily Spanish-speaking employees. El Menudazo is one of the newer restaurants on the trail. Its specialty is the tasty Birria taco from the Mexican state of Jalisco. Birria is made with lamb or beef and a layer of cheese with a rich broth. Open Thursdays through Sundays. The KCK Taco Trail is ongoing. However, entrants have until Oct. 31, 2021, to complete the trail and win prizes. The online passport that lists and maps out participating restaurants can be found at kcktacotrail.com. Art and history
KCK is a city of murals. The Avenue of Murals spotlights eight colorful and vibrant works in a four-block-long corridor along Minnesota Avenue. Each mural tells a story about the people who settled 8 VACATION NEWS
the area and honors the contributions of the city’s unique groups. More than 30 high school students worked on the fouryear project. One of the murals, El Baile de la Vida (“the dance of life”) is a tribute to Mexican folklorico dancing. Designed by Jose Faus and artist Alisha Gambino, the mural portrays costumed dancers from 19 Mexican states and images such as skeletons from Day of the Dead celebrations. A don’t-miss artistic attraction that ties in with the trail is the Anthology of Argentine Mural, located in KCK’s Argentine neighborhood. This spectacular landmark stretches 220 feet across a block of Metropolitan Avenue and is inspired by the community’s history, dating to the 1800s. It is one of the largest and most intriguing pieces of public art in Kansas. The Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center preserves the city’s ethnic heritage, featuring traditions of Eastern Europeans who pioneered the area as well as more than 15 immigrant nationalities. Due to the pandemic, Strawberry Hill is temporarily closed but plans to reopen in the spring. Watch strawberryhillmuseum.org for updates. More to see
KCK has strong appeal for families, as it is affordable and convenient with kid-friendly experiences. Kids can don a paper conductor hat and watch their meal delivered by an overhead train at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant. Covered with train decor, the diner has been a local favorite since l954 and is famed for its old-fashioned hamburgers and soda fountain treats. NASCAR racing is popular here. The Kansas Speedway is a 1.5 mile tri-oval track that plans on hosting four races in 2021, including two in the NASCAR Cup Series. February 5-March 4, 2021
DAY TRIP The Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point is named for the famed explorers who stopped in the area on their way west. Wooded trails and an educational open air pavilion are an inviting respite. The Chateau Avalon Hotel features 61 guest suites blending the charm of a bed and breakfast with the amenities found in high-end resorts. Suites have 23 separate themes, such as Tuscany, adventure and Camelot. The Frenchinspired hotel offers spa services, a wine bar and shuttle. M
ark your calendars for Saturday, March 6, 2021 for a day of free fun and learning more about creatures that live in your own back yard. This year Eagle Days will be a 1-day event featuring the live bird programs at Osage National Golf Resort and Regalia Hotel & Conference Center. With community safety first and foremost in mind, the Eagle Days Committee decided to postpone the event until later in the spring in hopes that it can be held safely and have more options, weather permitting. The World Bird Sanctuary will return to Osage National with the Live Eagle Programs, which will feature 4 different species of eagles including a bald eagle. Programs will begin on the hour starting at 9am. Dickerson Park Zoo will be at Regalia Hotel & Conference Center featuring two different live bird programs. One will feature the Bald Eagle and the other is all about Owls of Missouri including the four native owls to Missouri. Programs will begin on the half hour starting at 9:30am. “We are hopeful by moving to later in the spring we will be able to at least have the live bird programs which are the event’s biggest draw,” Joann Billington, committee member and Master Naturalist stated. “Weather depending, we may not have as many migrating eagles that time of year, but hopefully our local resident eagles will be active around the Osage River as they are many times throughout the year.” The committee is still trying to determine how to incorporate other aspects of the event safely. Visit www.lakeoftheozarkseagledays.com for updated information or follow us on Facebook for updates. 12 VACATION NEWS
While all of the venues aren’t available for extra viewing opportunities this year, people are encouraged to bring binoculars and be on the lookout for live eagles below Bagnell Dam at the Osage River access.

Coming to Camdenton VA clinic, brewery among developments planned
W
ith 2020 in the rearview mirror, many are looking to make 2021 a more positive and uplifting year. With that in mind, there is a lot to be excited about over the next year in Camdenton. City Administrator Jeff Hooker says he is very excited about the many plans he and other city officials have for the year. While there are still many developments still in their early phases, Hooker opened his playbook to discuss some of the big developments coming to the city very soon. Here’s a look at what to expect: -The newly built Dollar Tree store in Camdenton has received a tentative opening date of March 3. The store, which began work all the way back in August 2020, is stationed right in front of Orscheln Farm & Home. The location is also next to the newly built Gerbes gas station along US 54. Hooker says this date is tentative. He also confirmed that an H&R Block would be moving into one of the side suites of the new construction, as well as a chain restaurant that is yet to be announced. Current word is that it will be a Mexican restaurant, but there is no current confirmation on this. -Shortleaf Brewing Company out of O’Fallon, MO has closed on the previous Dogwood Animal shelter thrift shop building in Camdenton. This will be a satellite location. They have met with the city to discuss what they plan to bring to Camdenton, though many details are still unknown. Michael Crowell, a member of the company, says they are excited about the move, but many details about the operation are still in early development. The most he was 14 VACATION NEWS
able to share that this time was that they “are working on opening a craft beer establishment of some kind.” He says they will be making an official announcement in the future. -Surveyors have been on sight for what is to become a new veteran outpatient clinic in Camdenton. Hooker is excited about this development and believes it will be one of the biggest additions to the city during the year. The clinic is set to be 14,000 sqft with extended procedures for both physical and psychological treatment. The clinic is currently set to be built on US 54 near the water tower on the west side of town. Further details on the project are still in development. -A Kwik Kar car wash and oil change facility is coming to town sometime in 2021, with no date currently set. The car wash is set to be built near the US 54 overpass. -The community center project has moved into the construction document phase. The city is currently working to move into obtaining hardline construction bids. Hooker says they are hoping to hold off on any major building plans until the economy levels out and the COVID virus has been controlled. He says they want to be able to build a community building when people are actually able to get out and use it without the need for social distancing. -Camdenton hopes to get the city back on track with normal yearly functions,m such as opening the community pool during regular summer months. Hooked says they are also working to get many of the fall festivals back, such as Pumkin Chunkin Palooza and more. This will be determined by the state of the COVID virus as the months progress. Best books of 2020
N
early half of my favorite new books of 2020 were science fiction and fantasy. But I don’t see that as escapism. There was no way to escape the anxieties stirred up by the deadly pandemic, demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, and the most contentious election of my lifetime. In reading SFF, I often see determined and resourceful characters facing dangerous and constantly changing circumstances with courage. I wish I saw more of that in the world around me. As usual, your mileage may vary. My choices are listed in alphabetical order by title. “Big Girl, Small Town” by Michelle Gallen (Algonquin) Bright, earthy and funny, Majella works in a chip shop in a Northern Ireland border town, copes with her alcoholic ma and watches “Dallas” DVDs to relax. She’s also on the autism spectrum, constantly analyzing the people around her to know how to respond. The star of Gallen’s novel is my most unforgettable fictional character of 2020. “Black Sun” by Rebecca Roanhorse (Saga) An intense fantasy, inspired by indigenous North and Central American civilizations, that pits clans against each other in a battle of magic powers. “Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey” by Kathleen Rooney (Penguin) In this historical novel, a carrier pigeon and a gay American Army officer, both based on real beings, alternate in describing the horrors of fighting in World War I. Respect for animals and their experiences is a powerful thread throughout. “Homeland Elegies” by Ayad Akhtar (Little, Brown)
A hard-hitting semi-autobiographical novel from the Brookfield Central grad and Pulitzer Prize winner, about the unease of being a brown Muslim in the U.S. after Sept. 11, and about the destructive power of unfettered capitalism. February 5-March 4, 2021
“The Left-Handed Booksellers of London”
by Garth Nix (Katherine Tegen Books) In this witty Young Adult fantasy, punkish Susan in ‘80s London learns that booksellers secretly protect our world from evil magic, and they need her help. While marketed as a book for teens, adults will also enjoy this novel. “Network Effect” by Martha Wells (Tor)
Once again, the self-aware and illegally self-directed SecUnit who would rather binge on the future’s version of Netflix has to save some humans from fatal jeopardy. Wells’ human/AI hybrid is a narrator like no other. “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies” by Deesha Philyaw (West Virginia University Press) In this wonderful collection of short stories, Black women and teens wrestle with their desires and chafe against the ties of church and family that bind them. “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman (Penguin) A lively and humorous debut mystery from a British television presenter, about four friends in a quiet retirement home who go from pondering cold cases to solving an actual murder. An engaging read, but also a book with enormous respect for older people. “Unconquerable Sun” by Kate Elliott (Tor) An exciting space opera that’s also a gender-switched version of the Alexander the Great story, with women as powerful warrior leaders. Impressive world-building. “Warhol” by Blake Gopnik (Ecco)
An enormous, detailed biography of the artist and provocateur that blows up notions that he somehow Zelig-ed his way through life. Gopnik shows that Warhol was a serious student of art history who was always looking for the next edge. The biographer also explores many ways being gay affected Warhol’s work.
