DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood

A visit to Osceola

Take a short journey of 60 miles west of the Lake area to Osceola.

O

sceola is the county seat of St. Clair County. The town is a straight shot on Highway 54 from Camdenton, through Preston and Wheatland. The Osage River at Osceola was a steamboat destination before the Civil War. Hydroelectric damming of the Osage created a small lake between the bluffs. The miniature-sized beauty captures a screenshot of the similar magnificence created at Lake of the Ozarks by damming. The bluffs seem higher at the Osage Bluffs with lower waterlines. These historic bluffs have been celebrated since 1888. An old brochure from that era extols the virtues of the views near Osceola. “How grand are thy works, O Master Divine! The Osage and the Sac Rivers vie with each other in their natural beauty. Here their river banks o’er hung with drooping elm or giant sycamore, there long reaches of pebbled, gravelly beach, on and further on great walls of rock and bluff stand boldly forth with the hoar of a thousand ages on their face, and check the waters of the ever-flowing streams which bathe their rocky feet as if in conciliation and with peaceful curvetted pass onward on the journey to the sea... A coming generation of scenic artists will find, that after the beautiful scenery of Colorado, Utah and the Sierras have been made familiar to the public, they can turn to the hitherto neglected scenery of the Osage and Sac rivers and find gems of surpassing beauty.” *www.dammingtheosage.com The bluffs also lead us to another chapter in outlaw history of Missouri. Ever chasing any links between the James/Younger gangs and Mormon history, the quest never stops. None was found at Osceola, but an unknown hangout of the group was found at the Osceola Bluffs. River Hills Traveler tells the history of a lesser-known hideout of the bad boys of northwest Missouri’s Clay County. Monegaw Springs is located eight miles from Osceola. It was once a booming spring town where folks went for spa treatments. The Younger Gang had a shootout with the detectives of the Pinkerton railroad not too far from here. The damming of Truman Lake made this treasure vanish. But before that time, President Harry S. Truman visited Monegaw Springs spa, along with the Younger Brothers and Jesse James before him. The Clubhouse at Monegaw Springs is where the outlaws hung out and played pool. The Clubhouse burned in 1926. February 11 - 24, 2022

The Historic Commercial Hotel. Photo provided

A quick drive into Osceola’s vintage downtown will surprise you with an unusual little gift shop sitting at the end of the street overlooking the Sac River. Missouricana is an eclectic store filled with unique gift items, perfect for shopping for the hard to please! With a vision to sell made-in-Missouri small business products, the rest of the inventory is unusual, not found in other stores, or just a bit offbeat. Owner Rik Woods formerly housed a music store in the downtown storefront, with a little bit of that inventory still available here. There are some vintage and new vinyl records, guitar strings and picks, and even some woodwind reeds. In the made locally section, a handcrafted line of beard balms, soaps, and all things good smelling for men line the wooden tables. Local candles and soaps keep a nice homey aroma in the store too. Two shelves of what Rik has picked to be good reading face the picture window store front. You can grab a book and turn around and help yourself to a cup of coffee or a vintage soda from the cooler. Missouricana stocks small batch company hand crafted snacks like Stroop waffles and popcorn. Missouricana is located downtown at 744 2nd Street, Osceola. The Historic Commercial Hotel is also on the courthouse square. The hotel made the news last year booking solidly on Airbnb, known as the hotel where Jesse James would stay when traveling through in his gun slinging days. New this year, the business is opening a Jesse James Suite where you can lay your head >>> VACATION NEWS 7

DAY TRIP where he did. They also boast the Tom Mix Suite, where the old-time actor often stayed. The Historic Commercial Hotel is located at 610 2nd Street. Osceola these days is perhaps most well-known for the Osceola Cheese Factory. So, no Day Trippin would be complete without adding them to the list of places to visit. It’s the home of free samples. This is the flagship store of a thriving Missouri industry. Established in 1944 they were on the road collecting dairy from over 1,000 Missouri milk producers. Visitors from all over the nation travel to Osceola Cheese Factory to sample the huge variety of unusual flavors, with their specialty veering toward peppery blends. They don’t only sell their fresh made cheeses, they make beef jerky, candies, and sell jellies and jams. Osceola Cheese Factory Store is located at 3700 N. Hwy. 13. With the time arriving to recharge before your drive back home to the Lake area, Sugarfoot BBQ is a good stop on your way out of town. Sugarfoot BBQ has an unusual Caribbean theme to what is not normally considered to be a Caribbean specialty. The Bryant family brings this fruity theme to some of its sauces, too. Caribbean Fever Sauce has some pineapple juice in it, so that is a bit different for a BBQ place. Sugarfoot BBQ is located at 5440 Northeast Hwy. 82.

Open daily, year-round the Osceola Cheese store offers more than 250 varieties of cheese and a large selection of gifts and other merchandise.

he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free youth trout fishing event from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery. This event is a good way to introduce youngsters to fishing at a hatchery pond stocked with trout by MDC. This event is open to young anglers ages 3 to 15. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents or guardians may help them fish. The fishing will be catch and release. MDC can provide all fishing equipment needed. Anglers may also bring their own gear and bait. Bait that an angler carries in water is not allowed to prevent introduction of invasive species. MDC staff and volunteers will be on hand to coach and assist participants. In January, young anglers fished during a snowstorm and enjoyed catching fish at a similar Lost Valley event, said Kara Entrop, MDC community education assistant. But if the weather forecasted for Feb. 19 is too inclement, participants will be notified about a date change. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. Registration is required for all participants. To register, visit https://short. mdc.mo.gov/44o.

GOLF

A view of construction of Hole No. 9 at The Oaks.

Photos provided designers Robert Trent Jones Sr., Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge. The Trent Jones Cove Course opened in 1979 at the Lodge of Four Seasons. In 1980 the Tan-Tar-A Ski slopes were gone and the Devlin/ Von Hagge designed Oaks Golf Course opened. These two courses transformed the landscape of golf at the Lake and throughout the 80s were the gems of the area. Each course hosted many collegiate tournaments and other regional events that put the Lake on the golfing landscape in the midwest. By the end of the decade the west side of the Lake opened a new 9-hole course called Indian Rock which later expanded to 18 holes in the mid 90s. The 90s was the decade of the golf boom around the country and the Lake area saw five new courses open and three others expand. In 1991 the 9-hole course called Bay View debuted on Y Road in Linn Creek but later closed in 2010. The Lodge of Four Seasons opened their second championship 18-hole course the Ridge. In 1992 North Port National, known today as Osage National, opened their original Arnold Palmer designed 18hole course to rave reviews and a skins game featuring Arnold, Lee Trevino and Missouri natives Payne Stewart and Tom Watson. By 1999 Sycamore Creek had opened their original 9-hole course and expanded it to 18. In 12 VACATION NEWS

2016 Sycamore Creek closed its doors after 21 years. Indian Rock and Osage National had also expanded to 18 and 27 holes respectively by the turn of century. 1999 also brought about the opening of the Tom Weiskoph signature 18-hole course the Club at Old Kinderhook. The club is situated on land once known as Empire Ranch, which 30 years before had been days away from becoming the site of Lake Valley Country Club before their existing site was secured. The turn of the century brought the last of the course expansion to the Lake of the Ozarks. Bear Creek Valley opened in 2001 on land which was once a 250 acre Oak and Hickory Farm. Redfield Golf Club opened in Eugene in 2001 and featured the first course in the area with Bent Grass fairways. The Jack Nicklaus signature course, the Club at Porto Cima, also opened in 2001 with Jack himself here for the grand opening. The Club at Porto Cima has been the gold standard in the Lake area ever since. The final piece was The Club at Deer Chase which opened in 2004 to round out the Lake of the Ozarks golf courses. Golf has played an important part of the Lake’s history dating back almost 90 years, but none of the growth and success would have been possible without the building of Bagnell Dam. BOATING by Doug Beck

Winter boating tips Cold-water boating is not unusual at Lake of the Ozarks. Stay safe with the proper gear on board.

W

hile most boats are laid up this time of year, there’s still plenty of boating in winter to enjoy: in warmer climates for the purpose of fishing or simply cruising, on cold rivers where winter steelhead exist, in coastal waters for migrating species, and so forth. Whether you’re boating in winter from an open boat, a boat with a cabin, or simply a kayak, you have to respect the elements and be aware of the effects of exposure to cold air and water, even on a warm and windless day. While you should always have all of the normal safety equipment when you go boating, here are 10 tips specific to enjoying cold-water boating in winter. First and foremost when boating in the winter, dress for the water temperature, and most of all, wear your life jacket. Maybe you are asking yourself, “I want to start boating in the colder months of the year. What kind of gear do I need?” Boating in the colder months? The question is much more complex, and it involves your safety – something we take a very personal interest in. Here are some of the factors, in no particular order, that figure into what you need to wear: • Water temperature. Water conducts heat away from your body 25 times more efficiently than air. The best advice is “dress for the swim.” The colder the water, the faster your body will lose heat. • Personal comfort range. Here in Missouri we have some folks that wear shorts even in the winter. And, we have others that have heaters running under their desks in the summer months. Only you know how your body works. • Water conditions. Are you fishing from a raft? Are you paddling the inlets of a lazy river or lake observing or hunting wildlife? • If you do go for a swim, how long are you likely to be in the water? Are you in conditions where you won’t be in the water long and can get to shore easily to warm up and change into dry clothes?

The bottom line is: cold water kills. As internationallyrecognized water safety expert Charlie Walbridge points out in “Cold Water Protection and Hypothermia,” as the body’s internal temperature drops, automatic responses begin in the attempt to keep the major organs and functions protected. These responses rapidly lead to loss of manual dexterity, uncontrollable shivering and diminished mental facilities. These inhibit your ability to self-rescue and make the decisions necessary for your survival. Okay, so at this point you’re probably saying, “Alright, I hear all that, but my original question still stands. What kind of gear do I need for cold water boating?

BOATING

1. CONSIDER SURVIVAL WEAR

Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear is obviously important for winter boating. However, a float coat or survival suit is a good investment if you’ll be venturing out often.

2. HAVE TWO PAIRS OF WARM GLOVES

If you’re fishing, one pair will likely get wet. Save the second pair for the ride home.

3. USE HAND AND TOE WARMERS

Put hand warmers in your gloves or at least in your jacket pockets. Use toe warmers in your boots, or maybe electric socks or boot-warming insoles.

Lake Vibes Veteran Owned and Operated

Open s 7 day k a wee

Sunglasses, hats, apparel & more!

4. COVER YOUR FACE AND EYES

Use ski goggles to cover your eyes when the boat is running fast, especially if you’re the operator. A warm balaclava should cover all exposed facial flesh. Remember that wind chill is considerable the faster the boat is moving.

5. FACE THE STERN; GO LOW

If you’re a passenger, put your back to the bow and face the stern when the boat is running. Get low if possible. Some passengers sit on a bean bag on the floor.

6. KEEP YOUR PFD ON

The shock of sudden entry into cold water dictates cold weather boating prudence. If something goes drastically wrong, you have a better chance of survival in cold water if your PFD is already on, secure, and properly fitted.

7. MAKE SURE YOUR BOAT/MOTOR IS IN TOP SHAPE

This is not the time for a crippling breakdown that strands you, especially when there are fewer people on the water to come to your assistance. Don’t go out unless you have 100% confidence in your vessel.

8. Make a float plan

Have a written plan to let others know where you are going, what time you expect to be back, who to call in case of emergency.

9. HAVE COMPANY

Take a capable companion (or paddle with another person if you’re kayaking) along who can lend a hand if you get into trouble. Whether solo or with someone, let someone else know where you’re headed and when you expect to be back, and when to raise an alarm if you haven’t contacted them.

10. DON’T TAKE CHANCES

Through your actions, you could possibly run aground, or hit an underwater obstruction and disable your motor, or get stuck behind an ice floe (this happened to me once). In each case, you could be in for a long and cold time until you can get out of the predicament. Be realistic about your abilities and the circumstances, especially considering the coldness of the weather and the water. Consider how you’d have to deal with an incident that you might otherwise avoid by making a good decision rather than a risky one. Mardi Gras Pub Crawl

T

he World’s Largest Pub Crawl will be taking place over four days this year, February 18-21 at Lake of the Ozarks. The popular Mardi Gras Pub Crawl has evolved in a post-COVID world but organizers have been working to keep the longstanding event alive despite unforeseen challenges getting the buses running again. This year’s Pub Crawl will be different from previous years. Participants will be asked to check in on social media, using the hashtag #LOZPubCrawl22. The more places a person checks in, the better the odds are that they’ll go home with a prize. In previous years, the Pub Crawl took place on one day with buses shuttling participants to more than a dozen stops in the Lake Ozark/ Osage Beach area. Last year buses did not run due to COVID. Participants checked in to Pub Crawl stops using an official App and a variety of prizes were awarded. An effort was made to bring the buses back this year, but due to a labor shortage the bus company could not commit to staffing drivers for the Crawl. There are a number of safe transportation options listed on the official event website www.LakePubCrawl.com, along with overnight accommodations. According to Luke Hagedorn, Lake Area Chamber of Commerce board member, Pub Crawl committee member, and general manager of Dog Days, extending February 11 - 24, 2022

George Denny photos the Pub Crawl from one to four days gives people the chance to visit the Lake during the offseason and take time to visit local businesses. With President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 21 some people will be able to take advantage of a long weekend. Each day of the crawl, a Host Party will be held. On Friday the Kick Off Party will take place at Dog Days. Saturday’s Crawling All Day Party is at The Encore Lakeside Grill & Sky Bar. On Sunday Tirebiters hosts the Don’t Stop Crawling party, and Monday will be the Funday Farewell Crawlers party at Foxxy Roxy inside the Regalia Hotel & Conference Center. Each place is planning to offer Pub Crawl specials such as entertainment, buffets or other activities. Check www.LakePubCrawl.com for a full list of participating stops. There is no official App this year. Participants can take a photo, use the hashtag #LOZPubCrawl22 and post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for a chance to win prizes. VACATION NEWS 17

Ozark memorabilia coming ‘home’

U

nless you’ve lived on an internet-free island, or sequestered yourself without any exposure to the rest of the world the last few years, you’re well aware that the final season of the vaguely familiar Ozark has hit the big screen. The most interesting aspect to those of us who are familiar with The Lake of the Ozarks is that Ozark has several physical and personal connections to the Lake. One of its creators – Bill Dubuque – crafted the story based loosely on his time as an employee at The Alhonna Resort and Marina at the end of Horseshoe Bend. Dubuque, a resident of St. Louis, and his brother, who died last year, have roots at the Lake. They both worked at Alhonna. The Blue Cat Lodge, where Marty and Wendy Byrde landed after escaping the tentacles of Chicago to launder money, is fashioned after Alhonna. The series’ premise is this: Byrde is a financial planner who relocates his family from Chicago to a summer resort community in the Ozarks (the Lake of the Ozarks). With Wendy and their two kids in tow, Marty is on the move after a moneylaundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay off a substantial debt to a Mexican drug lord in order to keep his family safe. While the Byrdes’ fate hangs in the balance, the dire circumstances force the fractured family to reconnect. Jason Bateman, who plays Marty Byrde, actually spent a day at Alhonna along with Dubuque and Jordana Spiro who played Rachel Garrison in Season 1. (Not to spoil the moment, but Season 1 of Ozark saw Rachel Garrison running away in a bid to escape from Marty and Wendy Byrde after 20 VACATION NEWS

she was forced to become their business partner, according to one website). Bateman also served as a director and executive producer for the series. Mike and Sheryl Elia, managers of Alhonna, have acquired the actual, functioning Blue Cat Lodge sign which is stored safely away on their property. The sign will be erected and lighted this spring so it can be seen from land and water. Another of the series’ memorabilia, The Lickety Splitz Gentleman’s Club sign, is now in the hands of local Realtor Mike Swift, whose agency has The Alhonna Resort listed for sale. He plans to gift it to a client who’s in the middle of purchasing a home here. It all comes full circle. The story, of course, has many twists and turns and outright stunning moments. Such as the end of Season 3 and midway through the first half of Season 4. Bang, bang. You’ll have to watch to fill in the blanks. The final season of Ozark opened on Netflix Jan. 21, with the seven-episode Part 1. Netflix has yet to announce when Part 2 of Season 4 will be released. And the series’ connection to The Lake of the Ozarks has some quirky twists as well. While most of the series was shot in Georgia, there are glimpses of the Lake, especially from the air. There’s just enough local shots to bring the series credibility that it’s about The Lake of the Ozarks. The first season, which brought a lot of hullabaloo to the Lake of the Ozark and consternation to PR types, was released back in July 2017. The second season premiered in August 2018 and the third in March 2020, with all three seasons conFebruary 11 - 24, 2022

FEATURE sisting of 10 episodes apiece. To keep us hanging on, Season 4 is broken into a two seven-part series. As the story goes, those close to the production learned through local media that Alhonna was for sale through Swift & Co. Realty of Osage Beach. The company that had access to the Ozark set and memorabilia reached out to Realtor Mike Swift and asked if he was interested in the Lickety Splitz Gentleman’s Club sign. Yes, of course, he said. Swift contacted Mike and Sheryl to see if they were interested in the Blue Cat Lodge sign and, of course they said yes. Mike says he has a client in the process of buying property and he plans to give that client the Lickety Splitz sign. Swift arranged for transport of both signs from Atlanta, Ga., to the Lake in early December. Alhonna for sale Alhonna Resort was bought by Sheryl’s parents, Shafer and Shirley Gross, in 1980 as a family venture after moving from Chicago. Shafer died in 2010 and Shirley then married Gordon Russel. Sheryl and husband Mike manage Alhonna for Shirley and Gordon. The Elias have raised kids at the resort, who now have no interest in coming back to take over. They have created lives of their own with families to raise as well. Since there are no immediate heirs to the resort, they and their mom are ready to find another family who want to take over the now-historic Alhonna Resort and Marina. As described on the resort’s website, “Alhonna Resort offers you good old fashioned family fun right at the water’s edge on beautiful Lake of the

Ozarks! “Located at the 8-mile marker off Horseshoe Bend, the Alhonna Resort is owned and operated by the Gross family. Over the last 42 years, we have played host to thousands of visitors who have chosen again and again to call Alhonna Resort their home at the Lake! “Alhonna offers on-site amenities such as three pools, Bobber’s Restaurant & Lounge, boat rentals, an enclosed fishing dock, sandy beach area and so much more ...” If you’re wondering where the Ozark producers came up with the name Blue Cat Lounge, the Elias’ best guess is that a large Blue Catfish mounted behind the bar was the impetus. And, yes, Ozark has been good for business. Mike and Sheryl say boat and vehicle traffic picked up after Ozark debuted. Some visitors have eaten at Bobber’s, some of had their pictures taken there and some have rented a cabin. “The kids aren’t interested, and mom needs to retire,” Sheryl explained succinctly for their decision to sell. Running a small resort is hands-on for both she and Mike. There’s little they haven’t done to keep the resort a pristine example of running a small, family resort. About Dubuque

Dubuque was born in St. Louis, spending time working at Alhonna as a teen. He still lives in St. Louis with his wife and three children, with whom he still frequently visits the Lake of the Ozarks, according to Wikipedia. He is a screenwriter and is credited with involvement in several other productions. Check out our Google Reviews! Check us out on Facebook for before & after photos!

RESTAURANT PROFILE by Charis Patires

Bagels all day W

e all know breakfast is good any time of day. Whether it’s in the morning or afternoon, NYC Bagel in Osage Beach serves up a wide variety of bagels and bagel sandwiches all day long. Owner Gloria Homeier had a vacation home at the Lake for about 12 years. Unable to find a place that serves a really good bagel, she decided to open the restaurant in August 2021. The bagels are non-GMO, vegan, Kosher-certified, handrolled and baked to perfection. There are more than a dozen to choose from including the popular Asiago Cheese, French Toast, and Everything Bagel. Others include Poppy, Blueberry, Cinnamon Raisin, Onion, Pumpernickel, Sun Dried Tomato, Energy, and other varieties. The selection of schmears include butter, peanut butter, peanut butter and jelly, veggie, scallion, bacon scallion, walnut raisin honey almond, jalapeño and others. You can top any bagel with eggs and breakfast meat. Everyone really seems to love our Ozarker breakfast sandwich, Homeier said. This is an Everything Bagel with ham, bacon, egg and schmear. The Lox Bagel is also a customer favorite. It features your choice of bagel and schmear with smoked salmon and capers. “It is amazing and you will not find this anywhere else at the Lake,” she

said. Deli sandwiches are unique and come with your choice of bread or bagel. From Turkey Ranch, the Cuban, Buffalo Chicken, Cordon Blue, Grilled Chicken Pesto Panini, you’ll find a selection that is unique and can’t be found anywhere else at the Lake. Some of the most popular sandwiches on the menu include the Philly Steak or Rueben on Rye. All sandwiches are served with savory bagel chips. There are also salads and specialty coffees and smoothies available. About the restaurant

Making a connection through music

I

t’s more than just performing to an audience for singer, songwriter and musician Adam Powell. Every time he plays for a crowd he walks away fulfilled having made a connection with the audience and providing them a nostalgic experience. “The music is half of it. The other half is developing friendships,” Powell said. “Connecting with people, knowing that they are enjoying it … it’s fulfilling and therapeutic for me. There’s nothing better. Music makes me feel good.” Every show is different. “I follow my instincts, try to keep it fresh and the crowd interested,” he said. With a repertoire of about 500 songs, depending on the venue Powell will play anything from classic country to classic rock — everything from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, the Eagles, and Bob Marley. He keeps the sound at an enjoyable level so customers can experience good music but also have a conversation with those at their table or walk around and meet people. Originally from Georgia, Powell moved to a few Hear him places over the years before settling in Eugene, Mo. in August 2020. Adam Powell performs a variety “I had been performing all over north Missouri during of top 40 classics and recently that time but after COVID hit it we decided to relocate released a CD of original music to the Lake area to continue performing and pursuing my music career,” he said. “I “This Son’s For You” which is also performed at shows. Follow have been performing in bands, duos and solo most of my life and continued my him on Facebook at Adam Powjourney going full-time in 2011.” ell Live Entertainment. Hear him “Moving to the Lake area has been the best thing I could have done and I have play at JB Hook’s, Casablanca been very fortunate in meeting the right people who have given me the opportuand The Brick House. nity to perform and begin building a fan base in my home area,” he said. Powell grew up in a house full of music. His mother played the piano and his dad played guitar, teaching him the basics. “He mostly played bluegrass and country but I was exposed to a wide variety of music through a large record collection that my parents had,” he said. “I didn’t get serious until I was 14 years old and began trying to play James Taylor songs. I was hooked and I think it was during that time that I developed an interest in singing.” He began playing the piano at 16 which opened up a different genre of music as he tried to learn Billy Joel and Elton John songs. His greatest musical influences were the singers/songwriters James Taylor, the Beatles, the Eagles, Jackson Brown, Bill Withers, America, Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. “I especially love the music of the 70’s. I really connect with anything that is melodic, honest and passionate,” Powell said. “I love the great storytellers like Harry Chapin ‘Cats in the Cradle,’ James Taylor ‘Fire and Rain’ and Billy Joel’s ‘Piano Man.’ I believe that is what inspired me to pursue songwriting and performing.” As much as he loves to play the guitar and piano, singing is his first love and Powell has spent countless hours developing a voice. He’s often complimented on his smooth, soulful, soothing voice and his extensive song collection. “There is nothing better to me than connecting with people through music and singing,” Powell said. “It brings me great joy and fulfillment to have that experience night after night and to know that I have made someone’s evening special through performing nostalgic tunes and creating new memories.” February 11 - 24, 2022
