DAY TRIP story by Connye Griffin
Weston for the win
O
nce the second largest port in Missouri, Weston had to reinvent itself when the mighty Missouri River changed course, leaving Weston on dry ground and the navigable river two miles away. Now Weston is a fine destination just a morning’s drive from the lake, perfect for a winter getaway, especially if skiing is a sport you love. Snow Creek Ski Area
For 35 years, Snow Creek has made good use of a 300foot vertical drop with 60 snowmaking machines to blanket the slopes with snow in 72 hours. It opened for its 36th season on December 18, 2021. Five lifts and twelve trails from beginning to expert carry skiers and snowboarders of all ages and experience up and down elevations. A lodge and dining options are also part of the resort. Snow Geese near Weston
Just 90-minutes from Weston is Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge (formerly known as Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge) where birds thrive. Eagles are as common there as they 10 VACATION NEWS
Vicki Wood photos are here at Lake of the Ozarks through the winter. However, wetlands in Missouri now provide winter homes to snow geese, and Loess is one place to see them as they migrate or settle for a winter home. Many other species thrive at Loess and are accessible by car or hiking trails. The state’s own Weston Bend State Park has more hiking and wintry beauty for tourists to enjoy. Shopping in Weston
One of Weston’s charms is its quaint Main Street. Historic buildings dating from the 19th century house 21st century shops where visitors can buy Irish sweaters, Polish pottery, and collectibles. Main Street is also home to a tobacconist where more than 600 different cigars are for sale. Another Main Street outlet brings the farm to town at The Farmer’s House Market. The store provides “vocational and community integration services for youth and adults with developmental disabilities.” They are the Farmers who grow and sell local products, including meals-togo, baked goods, and kitchenware. Dining and Drinking, Weston
Weston is home to Green Dirt Creamery, well-known for sheep’s milk and cheeses. The creamery has a retail storefront and hosts special events there. In late January or early February, the exact date yet to be set, Green Dirt will stage a Build Your Own Cheeseboard workshop where enrollees will learn to create a party centerpiece while enjoying a glass of wine as they fill a wood tray with snacks, condiments, and cheese. At the end of the 90-minute workshop, guests will have tray ready to enjoy at home. Varied and extensive menus are available from the Weston Brewing Company at its restaurant, America Bowman, featuring authentic Irish fare, and at O’Malley’s Irish Pub, home to musical acts, pub grub, and fine Irish whiskeys. McCormick products are distilled and bottled at the Holladay Distillery on rolling hills a short drive from Main Street. Holladay, named in honor of a Weston founding father, provides tours for its bourbon-making process and McCormick’s bottling business. Tours begin and end at the welcome center where, at tour’s end of the tour, visitors can taste and purchase McCormic spirits. For wine enthusiasts, Weston is near two: Jowler Creek Vineyard and Winery in Platte City and Riverwood Winery in Rushville. A full beverage tour of the Weston area allows guests to sample fine Irish whiskey, Holladay bourbons, and local wines made from grapes grown in Missouri soil. Weston has so much to offer, anyone can fill a weekend with outdoor and indoor fun. March 11 - 24, 2022

Fish from the bank
F
ishing from a boat allows you to cover a lot more of the Lake of the Ozarks’ 1,150 miles of shoreline but you can also find some good areas to fish from the bank. When conducting seminars on fishing Lake of the Ozarks, I have frequently been asked if the Lake has any good bank-fishing places. While most of the property around the Lake is privately owned, there are still some public areas which offer good fishing during certain times of the year for anglers who can’t afford to buy or rent a boat or hire a guide. The most convenient area to fish if you don’t have access to a boat is the dock of the resort of condominium where you are staying. The owners or caretakers of the property cater to their fishing guests by sinking brush piles near the docks and baiting the area with alfalfa or hay to attract minnows and baitfish, which draws in gamefish. These docks offer good fishing year-round for bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and carp. The Lake also has numerous acres of public land, although a long walk might be required to reach the best bank-fishing spots. Most of the Lake’s public land is in the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. This area offers plenty of opportunities to fish from the bank, but you will probably have to do some hiking to avoid the crowds. Ha Ha Tonka State Park is another public area where you can catch a variety of fish from the bank. Largemouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass and walleye congregate in the March 11 - 24, 2022
pool where the Ha Ha Tonka spring waters flow into the Lake. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) access areas usually hold bass and crappie year-round. Bass favor the rock riprap next to the boat ramps and around the courtesy docks while crappie hang around the sunken brush piles near the courtesy docks. The MDC areas also have fishing docks for handicapped anglers, which are loaded with sunken brush. MDC access sites providing bank-fishing opportunities include the Gravois Mills Access off State Highway 5 in Gravois Mills; Coffman Beach Public Access on Lake Road Y-20 near Rocky Mount; Shawnee Bend Access off State Route TT near Sunrise Beach; Larry Gale Access off Lake Road AA-101D near Roach; Brown Bend Access off Lake Road FF-14 near Climax Springs; and Wigwam School Access off Lake Road 135-12 on Ivy Bend. The best year-round spot to catch fish from the bank is the spillway below Bagnell Dam on either the north or south bank of the Osage River. Fishing is allowed the full length of the spillway, except above the orange restriction line close to the dam. The spillway area is home to walleye, white bass and hybrids, crappie, bass and catfish. The best action for most species usually occurs when water is being released from the dam Call the Ameren Lake level information at 573365-9205 to find out which days the dam will be releasing water. You can fish at the Lake of the Ozarks without leaving the bank if you try these areas on your next fishing trip.

FISHING
Paddlefish season begins March 15 Snagging waters include Lake of the Ozarks, Truman Reservoir, Table Rock Lake.
I
magine catching a giant, prehistoric fish whose ancestors swam during the time of dinosaurs. That is a reality for thousands of paddlefish snaggers during Missouri’s annual spring paddlefish snagging season. Paddlefish -- named for their large, paddle-shaped snouts -- are an ancient species that can grow to seven feet and weight more than 100 pounds. According to MDC, the state’s major paddlefish snagging waters include Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Reservoir, and Table Rock Lake. A fishing permit is required, unless exempt. The daily limit is two paddlefish, and the possession limit is four. No person shall continue to snag after taking a daily limit of two paddlefish on these waters. This regulation is new for Table Rock Lake. The paddlefish snagging season for these and most other waters in the state runs March 15 through April 30. The season for the Mississippi River is March 15 through May 15 with a fall season of Sept. 15 through Dec. 15. A new regulation change established a statewide minimum length limit of 32 inches -- measured from eye to fork of tail -- for sport/recreational taking of 14 VACATION NEWS
Provided by MDC paddlefish, up from the previous minimum length of 24 inches for most areas of the state. The existing minimum length limit of 34 inches -measured from eye to fork of tail -- will remain in effect for Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock Lake, Harry S. Truman Reservoir, and their tributaries. All paddlefish under the legal minimum length must be returned to the water unharmed immediately after being caught. MDC offers these tips: • Use landing nets, not gaffs, which can kill young fish. • Wet hands before handling fish and avoid excessive handling. • Never put fingers in the gills or eyes. • Remove hooks carefully and get undersized fish back into the water as quickly as possible. Extracted paddlefish eggs may not be possessed while on waters of the state or adjacent banks and may not be transported. Paddlefish eggs may not be bought, sold, or offered for sale. Learn more about paddlefish, snagging regulations, snagging reports, and more at huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/ fishing/species/paddlefish. March 11 - 24, 2022

Local author releases first book
A
t the age of 81, Lake Ozark resident Janet Pruett is on a new adventure — writing children’s books. Coming out of retirement to become an author wasn’t something that was planned but has been a wonderful experience, she says. Janet was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and worked in the women’s clothing industry. She also lived in Nevada and Illinois before settling down at Lake of the Ozarks a Janet reading the book to Carmichael, a character in the book, and her dog. Photos provided couple of years ago. When her 54-year-old son Michael had a stroke in 2015, she went to California to take care of him. He always took a bag of cheese puffs in the bedroom with him along with a stuffed tiger named Carmichael that he had received as a gift. “When he got up in the morning, Michael would laugh and say it was Carmichael getting into the cheese puffs. We had many laughs about it,” Janet said. After Michael passed away, a friend suggested Janet write about the ongoing joke of the missing cheese puffs so she decided to turn it into a children’s book, “Michael and the Cheese Puffs.” The story is centered around Michael’s 4th birthday. He’s opening up all of his presents saying he likes birthday cake and ice cream but his favorite is cheese puffs. Michael blames Carmichael for the disappearing cheese puffs, which his mother doesn’t believe at first until the truth is finally revealed. The book’s message for children is about telling the truth. Janet also hopes that the book provides inspiration for adults, too. She was reluctant at first to write the book and says after loosing sleep over it and running out of excuses she went ahead with it anyway. “I hope people are inspired to keep on doing what they love to do no matter what their age is,” Janet said. The book can be purchased from Stonecrest Book & Toy in Osage Beach, Amazon, Barns & Nobel and Halo Books International. Janet has two more books that are being finalized which continue Carmichael’s adventures. She is currently working on a fourth book “Lucy the Lady Bug.” Book signing

BOATING
Boating safety courses offered
T U.S. Coast Guard statistics indicate that of the boating crashes where the level of operator education was known, 80.6% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction. In contrast, only 19.4% of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator possessed a nationally-approved boating safety education certificate.
he Missouri State Highway Patrol is offering boating safety courses to inform and motivate boaters to prepare for the boating season. These approved courses meet the national boating educational standard. “Missouri’s many rivers and lakes offer a variety of boating opportunities,” said Col. Olson. “Please do your part: Take a boating safety class. Join us in our mission to promote safety on our waterways.” Missouri law requires everyone born after January 1, 1984, who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes to possess a certified boating safety education card. This includes personal watercraft operators. Boaters have the opportunity to sign up for a certified course in a classroom at: https://www. mshp.dps.missouri.gov/WP02Web/app/safetyEdClasses The classroom courses provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol are free, but registration is required and the boater ID card costs $15.

Volunteers needed for cleanup

H
undreds of Lake-area residents are set to put on their gloves and pitch in this month to help keep the region beautiful. Community members are encouraged to sign up in small groups on the day of their choosing to collect trash and debris for the annual Adopt-the-Shoreline spring cleanup. Ameren Missouri, the event’s primary sponsor, will provide trash bags and disposal services for those cleaning up around the Lake. “We view the Adopt-the-Shoreline cleanup as a form of ‘cleaning up the front yard.’ If there was a piece of trash on your lawn, you’d pick it up. This is no different,” said longtime volunteer Sandy Triplett. “In addition, joining together for this worthwhile cause has created an increased level of camaraderie between the neighboring homeowners and the local fire department staff who also pitch in and help.” The Triplett family and their community have been reliable, hardworking volunteers, keeping the area around the 57-mile mark clean for years. Volunteers can contact Ameren Missouri directly at 573-365-9206 to register a cleanup crew and arrange for trash services. Cleanup is best accomplished while Lake levels remain low. Beginning around April 1, the Lake level generally begins to rise. 26 VACATION NEWS
“This event is about creating a safe, healthy and beautiful environment that we all can enjoy for generations to come. This year, that includes taking extra precautions,” said Bryan Vance, shoreline management supervisor at Ameren. “This region is resilient, and we expect the collective impact of this cleanup project to be just as big as ever.” Ameren Missouri encourages all those participating in the shoreline cleanup to abide by all health guidelines designed to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Adopt-theShoreline program enables interested groups and residents to “adopt” portions of the Lake of the Ozarks shoreline for litter control. Since 1991, more than 13,000 volunteers have removed more than 5 million pounds of trash from the Lake’s shoreline. Each adopting group is responsible for safely cleaning a minimum of five shoreline miles and participating in at least two shoreline cleanup events. Volunteers are always welcome and needed to make the program a success. For more information about the Adopt-the-Shoreline program, visit https://www.ameren.com/missouri/residential/lake-of-the-ozarks/adopt-the-shoreline. March 11 - 24, 2022

BOATING compiled by Charis Patires
Get your dock ready for the season
I
t’s about that time of year. Time to uncover your boat and head out to a waterfront restaurant or for a cruise along the main channel. Before you do, it’s best to take some time to go over your boat and dock to make sure that everything is in working order. Your boat lift does a lot of work - especially at Lake of the Ozarks. With heavy boat traffic and large wakes, its necessary to do some general maintenance to eliminate problems before they start. Casey Osborn, partner at LOTO Lift & LOTO Marina offers advice when it comes to making sure nothing keeps you from enjoying the Lake life. Follow these tips or call a professional to come out and inspect your boat lift so you are ready to get out as soon as the weather allows. • It’s easy to forget about your boat lift but with use comes wear and tear. Some of the most common items that get worn are bushings, fasteners and dock brackets. Pneumatic free floating lifts are constantly moving whether or not your boat is on it so don’t overlook a loose bolt or arm bushing. The holes will be oblong in the dock brack28 VACATION NEWS
Provided photo ets making it ineffective in securing your lift. The labor involved in changing a bracket will tempt many people to make an adjustment using a different hole in the bracket, but it’s important to adjust all of the arms accordingly which may also require a change in the drop chain. Underwater tank mounts and any steel that is underwater should be routinely replaced, on average every 3-5 years. Rusty hardware can give the illusion of tightness because it is seized up and brittle. • Before lowering that lift for the first time this season, turn the control unit handle to “raise” and let the system bubble out for a minute. This will push water and any mud, Bryozoans, aquatic animals and other debris in the tank to come out through the large hole. If you turn the handle to “lower” instead it allows air to escape through your hose and the valve control in the unit. Eventually anything light enough will try to flow through the plumbing which traps air and does not allow the lift to fully submerge. • During the spring, there is a big difference between the air temperature and water temperature. This will cause March 11 - 24, 2022
BOATING the air in your tank to condense and allow water into the tank causing it to loose lift capacity. Boat lifts are rated for a lift capacity, not the dry weight of a vessel. When purchasing a lift account for the weight of fuel, water, gear and winter water temps. You should be filling the lift once a month during the winter and maybe a little more frequently in March and early April when the air temps and water temp vary the most. • The cold temps will put your plumbing fittings to the test. A weak or poorly sealed pipe fitting will show its ugly head in the form of a slow, irritating leak. Hoses also lose their flexibility adding more stress to tank fittings causing failures. • Spring levels can add a challenging variable. The Lake will typically drop six feet and can drop as much as nine feet from full pool. If the Lake is down and you back onto your lift, be cautious that just because your boat is free
floating doesn’t mean that lift will clear the drive. Your lift should have drop chains that will be tight to indicate the lift is down all the way. If there is slack in the chain that’s a red flag, but don’t worry, you can still make your dinner date with friends. If possible, raise your drives and move the boat in and out by hand. Do not engage your props or you’ll have more problems than missing dinner. Another factor to consider when the Lake is down is if your dock has changed its position. A dock will often lean when the water level changes. This can be attributed to the extra weight of the ramp. A dock mounted parallel to the shore will lean left to right in the slip and a dock mounted perpendicular will lean forward and possibly back if the front of the dock is sitting on the bottom. This can cause problems with vapor locking, or worse. Also, check for debris that is under the lift and remove anything that could hinder the system.

Life is sweet
ith a standard menu of 10 flavors, Ozark Cookie Co. in Camdenton has just what you need to satisfy that sweet tooth. Husband and wife team, Allison and Tim Bass own the businesses which opened in February. We opened up Ozark Cookie Company with the intention of bringing back local small town shopping. We wanted our storefront to feel cozy and extra special. Every detail was thoroughly thought out to make this feel like a unique experience for everyone,” Allison said. Originally from the Chicago area, Allison attended pastry school at the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago in 2005 and has worked in the baking industry ever since. “Baking is a lifelong passion that I finally get to put into an actual business,” she said.
Laura Benedict Photography They specialize in gourmet cookies to include the following flavors which are always on the menu: Classic Chocolate Chip, Mint Chocolate Chip, Strawberry Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Almond Cherry Pecan, Caramel Apple, Caramel Butter Pecan and Oatmeal Raisin Cinnamon Bun and Peanut Butter Cup. Seasonal flavors change every month. “Our cookies in itself are an item that cannot be found anywhere else,” Allison said. “The size and flavor combinations are completely unique to Ozark Cookie Company. Every cookie is individually packaged for freshness and makes the perfect grab and go treat.” Cookie and coffee catering is available where customers can purchase fresh brewed coffee from Firefly Valley Farms (a local roaster) to go along with a cookie assortment for meetings or special occasions. They can ship anywhere in the U.S. as well and offer gift packaging for any occasion. About the store
