DAY TRIP CR Rae/More Content Now

From track to trail

Converted railway shows off small-town Missouri

G

rab your hiking boots or best walking shoes, load the bikes and saddle up the horses for an adventure on the Katy Trail, where outdoor and history enthusiasts will find a variety of things to pique their interest. The Katy Trail in Missouri is the longest developed railtrail in the United States. Its 240 miles of former railroad passage and more than 30 access points mean the trail can offer a different experience each time you visit. The Katy is part of the American Discovery Trail and has been designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail. In 2008 it was slated as a Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame trail. The trail was built on what was the corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, nicknamed the K-T. It runs west to east between Clinton and Machens, Missouri. A portion of the trail between Cooper County and St. Charles County is a part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Also along the Katy are four restored railroad depots. The trail is flat and made from crushed limestone. Those following the trail will be treated to some of the best scenic areas of Missouri as it winds along the Missouri River. The Katy leads visitors through a rich excursion of small-town America. It is open throughout the year, and soon the spring will bring the blooms of the dogwood and redbud trees. Visiting in the summer travelers will find beautiful views of America’s farmlands and in the fall, the trees burst into a variety of colors. The trail offers visitors a chance to do as much or as little as they like, whether trying to conquer the entire trail over a few days or doing a mile for the scenery and fresh air. Along the way:

• Marthasville is one of the oldest owns in the state, an area once traveled by the Lewis and Clark expedition and Daniel Boone. Visitors find restaurants, vineyards and B&Bs here. • The more than 120-year-old tunnel at Rocheport is a popular place for photographs. The small town is a favorite of trail users, a place to take a breath and enjoy some tranquility. Here travelers find a host of bed and breakfasts, quaint and unique shops, galleries and artisans. Adjacent to the trail is Meriwether Café and Bike Shop. It makes for a great spot for a bite to eat, has outdoor dining and offers some of the best pancakes, including an all you can eat pancake break12 VACATION NEWS

fast. Need a bike? Meriwether has bikes to fit all sizes, including some tandems. Each bike rental includes a helmet. The Meriwether is closed in the winter but reopens in the spring. Visit the Facebook page and meriwethercafeandbikeshop. com for opening dates. • A visit to the Les Bourgeois Vineyard close to the Katy Trail will have you thinking you are not in Missouri anymore. The lush winery has well-known world-class wines, offers wine tastings, and has a gift shop and restaurants with views from the banks of the Missouri River. Three facilities make up LBV: the scenic A-Frame Winegarden, the tasting room and gift shop, and the Bistro, with indoor and outdoor dining areas for brunch, lunch and dinner. The A-Frame restaurant serves American picnic fare and offers live music. It is like having a picnic, but you don’t have to pack it. For a map of the trail and access points and a list of trails that are accessible for those with disabilities, visit mostateparks.com. Trail Racing Returns

T

rail of Four Winds 25K was a sold-out event in its inaugural year. The race, which was held at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, was capped at 150 runners. “In 2019, we had runners from ten states and one runner from South Africa,” said John Shelby, race director, Trail of Four Winds 25K. In 2020, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Rock Top 5K, also held at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, and forced Trail of Four Winds 25K to go virtual. “In 2021, trail racing returns to Lake of the Ozarks,” said Shelby “We will follow CDC guidelines to safely bring back these events.” Trail running is a growing sport. As National Public Radio stated in a July 2018 report, “It’s a mix of enHa Ha Racing events on Facebook durance and careful footwork that takes runners deep into nature.” According to a Spring 2020 survey conducted by the American Trail Running Association, 73% of respondents said they were going to run between 1-5 races in 2020. That is up from 66% in 2019. “My goal is to provide trail runners with racing opportunities at Lake of the Ozarks. Trail racing is a viable off-water event that contributes to the local economy,” concluded Shelby. FISHING by John Neporadny, jnoutdoors.com

Cold weather fishing Where to drop a line in at the Lake before the weather warms up.

L

ake of the Ozarks anglers can still enjoy some wintertime fishing when the lake freezes and becomes inaccessible by boat. The most comfortable way to fish in the wintertime is from an enclosed heated dock, which provides an ice-free fishing spot. Some resorts on Lake of the Ozarks cater to their wintertime customers by providing enclosed docks furnished with rocking chairs, toaster ovens, coffee makers, televisions and wood-burning stoves. Some heated docks are open to the public and charge a daily fee for walk-in anglers, while other resorts allow only their guests to fish from the heated docks. Enclosed docks at the Lake of the Ozarks emerged when fishing cabin resorts prospered at the lake during the 1940s and 1950s. Most of the docks were on the Niangua arm of the lake, while the rest were scattered on the Osage arm. Although the number of enclosed docks has dwindled in recent years, there are still a handful of resorts featuring these winter fishing sanctuaries. The weather outside might be frightful, but inside some of these docks it’s a balmy 60 to 70 degrees. Wood, kerosene and natural gas stoves or electric heaters keep the customers comfortable. When the lake freezes, the water inside the docks remains accessible to anglers because of the enclosed heat. The warmth and shelter from the wind provided by these fishing houses makes it much easier to detect the light strikes of wintertime fish. These floating structures are usually sitting over deep water (20 to 30 feet). Inside the docks are large wells filled with brush sunken on the lake’s bottom or hanging on wires at various depths. Some resorts also bait the wells with hay bales, dog food or oatmeal to attract minnows and shad. Anglers catch mostly crappie from the heated docks. If they have plenty of time, customers can catch 20 to 60 fish a day with keepers averaging 9 to 10 inches long. In wintertime crappie usually suspend 15 to 20 feet deep in the brush below the docks. The fish will stay above the brush or drop down in the cover. The thickest brush usually holds the most fish.

March 19-April 1, 2021

Alhonna’s enclosed dock is open to the public (weather permitting) but there is a fee of $7.00 per person, per day. In season (March – November) we sell minnows, worms, basic tackle & fishing licenses.

Minnows or jigs work best for dock crappie. White or chartreuse 1/32-ounce tube jigs fished on an ultra-light rod and reel and 6-pound test line consistently takes crappie. When the fish suspend 8 to 12 feet deep, scale down to a 1/64th-ounce jig and 2-pound test line if the fish are hitting lightly. While using live bait, try a smallto medium-sized minnow on a number one gold Aberdeen hook. The light wire hook enables you to pull it out of brush easier, which cuts down on lost tackle. FISHING

DAILY @ 11AM

Casting in the well is impractical, so pick a spot and drop your jig or minnow straight down. Look for any cables hanging in the water, which indicates a brush pile tied to it. Target bottom-hugging fish by letting your bait fall to the lake’s floor and then cranking the reel handle once. If this fails to produce, slowly reel up or stitch the line in your hand. When a strike occurs, keep track of the depth so you can present your bait at the exact location with your next offering. If the dock isn’t crowded, move around the well to fish different sections of brush. When fishing with a minnow, let the line sit to allow the bait to do all the work. Jig fishing requires a slight bouncing of the rod tip to create the lure’s action. Crappie bite lightly and infrequently this time of year, so pay close attention to your line.

COVER STORY by Mitch Prentice, newsroom@lakesunonline.com

Big events, big changes Aquapalooza

Aquapalooza will not only have an earlier date this year but will also be seeing a change of venue. The Benne Mediahosted festival will be taking place in two venues this year in the 7-mile cove, Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake, says 92.7 host Mike Clayton. The date of the festival will also be seeing a change, with the event taking place on June 26. Organizers are working with local officials at this time to organize the event. Clayton says they plan to have shows at both locations going backto-back on the same day. In other words, as a show ends at one stage, another will begin at the other stage.  The group decided to move the event this year from the normal location of Dog Days due to the desire to expand. Clayton says they expect this to be the biggest Aquapalooza turn out that they’ve seen.  “We’re excited; it will be super unique,” Clayton said.  This decision is still in the early stages of development. More details about the festival and acts playing will come soon, as well as which acts will be playing on which stage. Dogwood Festival

The 70th annual Dogwood Festival will be back in action this year, but will be hosted in a new location. Ozarks Amphitheater will host the festival, pageant and food vendors that have historically been held at the Camdenton R-III middle school. This year’s theme is ‘Dogwood through the Decades’ and the grand marshals of the parade will be front-line workers.  According to Camdenton Chamber Executive Director Trish Creach, the festival committee met with Camdenton R-III Superintendent Tim Hadfield to discuss plans for the festival earlier in the year. Hadfield says the school was still open to the idea of hosting the festival in 2021, but expressed concern to Creach over the difficulty the school would have with sanitation and staffing the event. “Keeping our building clean is tough with less staff. The Chamber was very supportive of that,” Hadfield said. 20 VACATION NEWS

With this in mind, Creach says the committee made the decision to seek out another venue so that planning and preparation could begin. The Chamber reached an agreement with the Ozarks Amphitheater and the festival will be held there on April 15, 16 and 17.  The Dogwood Festival parade will be held at 10:00 a.m. April 17. It will begin at the Camdenton city park and end at the Ozarks Amphitheater. Both Camdenton Police and the Camden County Sheriff’s Office will be present to guide the parade Creach says they will include some extra safety precautions at the event this year, including hand sanitizer booths and optional masks to be handed out. However, normal attractions such as rides and food vendors will be unchanged. This is not the first time the Dogwood Festival has been hosted at the Amphitheater. It will be returning to the location for the first time since the early 2000s. Creach says they were fortunate to have the location ready to host at such short notice. She says the amphitheater even has old layout designs for the festival from previous years, making organization much easier.  “It’s so great to have the Amphitheater in Camdenton’s backyard,” Creach said. Mary Kay von Brendel, Director of Operations at Ozarks Amphitheater, says they are excited about the opportunity to host the festival and look forward to the event. “All of us at the Ozarks Amphitheater are excited and honored to be the host for the 70th Dogwood Festival,” Mary Kay said. “Being an active member of our community is important to us.” If the world has returned to normal in 2022, Creach says they are open to returning the festival’s location to Camdenton R-III, but those decisions are still far off. More information about the festival, such as the official layout and festival maps, will be released at a later date. For more information, check the Camdenton Chamber website at http://camdentonchamber.com/ March 19-April 1, 2021

THE ARTS Story by Connye Griffin | Photography by Al Griffin

Life’s lessons in art Painting Parties

Irene Holt supplies canvas and easel, paints and brushes, apron and answers to questions painters may have. She brings it all to sites around the Lake within a 100-mile radius for an average cost of $25 per person. If the group is small and the distance long, there may also be a trip-charge. Participants choose their own subject from an array of finished canvasses, or they can request a subject that Irene will paint ahead of time. She then coaxes and coaches painters from first brush stroke to last. Groups that have enjoyed paint parties include wedding parties, family members gathered for a reunion, fun girls-nights-out, kids’ parties, birthday parties, and workplace celebrations. “Seek the artist within,” says artist and mentor Irene Holt. She has found her inner artist, and it has made all the difference in her life. She’s learned how to seek her own dreams, see the world more clearly, and support the dreams of others.

quiet while she used oil on canvas or poured acrylics and even splashed paint through a turkey baster to create flowers in bloom. She’s found oil is her favorite medium, and most of her personal fine art is in oil. Seeing

Seeking

Artist Irene Holt seeks opportunities and seizes them. For example, a Lake-area radio station asked if she would host a painting party so she added paint-party hostess to her extensive résumé that includes commissioned art pieces, on-site photography, poetry, and art instruction. She now takes the party to client homes or community centers. Some of them are sip and paint, too. Through parties, clients are privy to Irene’s life lessons. She believes “we all have an artistic part … and if we look for it and are willing to develop it, we can.” That philosophy describes Irene’s own journey to artistic expression. She cultivated her own interest by buying books about art and teaching herself. She also learned to tell her “inner critic” to be March 19-April 1, 2021

Irene thinks she found what she sought on the day she noticed “the composition of colors, shapes, [and] lines” while driving. A field of grasses was no longer monochromatic, but an array of hues, some in shadow and some in full sun. She recognized she was seeing with the eyes of an artist, and she has never again seen “things the same.” What Holt sees and paints are the hearts of her subjects. A cardinal is watchful; a wolf alert while camouflaged in Autumn’s woods. A pet dog looks ready to respond to the next command, and a muscular horse gallops into dreams. Three of Holt’s oils are of ships at sea, and each is part of a vast landscape, bright with light, strong enough to penetrate heavy clouds or paint a path upon the water. In two of these, the

seas roil, surely challenging the best sailors. All prove the artist’s eyes at work, seeing a continuum of color and shape communicating energy and story. One of Irene’s first oils is of her daughter. Now an upper-class college student, the portrait captures her as a baby. It also shows why Irene’s holiday commissioned work included seven portraits of seven couples. Supporting

Irene says she’s “always been blessed with family and friends who have supported … and encouraged” her. She pays that blessing forward through her blended family of five children, eight grandchildren, friends, and paintparty clients. By her actions and contributions, she hopes to be someone in a “circle of someones” who help others become their own “biggest fans.” To become part of Irene Holt’s circle of positive attitudes and artistic vision, call 660-227-0353, email generationsatthelake@gmail.com or go to www. generationsartstudio.com.

Make a habitat for bluebirds

W

hen it comes to nest building, early birds may not always get worms, but they can get other benefits. To find an example of this, look no farther than our state bird – the bluebird. Talking about nesting songbirds and hatchlings now may seem out of season when you consider the wintry weather we’ve had recently. However, regardless of what the thermometer shows or how much snow may be on the ground, this is the time of year to start preparing a home for bluebirds if you enjoy seeing them on your land. Many area residents, particularly people who live in rural areas, know Missouri’s state bird – the eastern bluebird – is a common sight in this region. However, some people may not realize that bluebirds arrive at nesting sites in February and early March in this part of the country and that brings us back to early nesting. Yes, early nesting is a gamble and bluebirds that begin nesting in the near future may experience nesting failures due to snowfall, cold snaps and other weather conditions associated with the late winter/early spring transitional period. However, when the meteorological cards fall the right way, there are several advantages to early nesting. For one thing, early nesting can provide a bird much better opportunities to raise multiple broods. For a bird, as is the case for other wildlife species, life is about species propagation. The more young that are produced, the greater chance a species has to survive. Also nest predators may be less active – or even absent – during early spring nesting. Offspring from early broods have more time to develop foraging skills and other life-sustaining traits over the course of summer. Parents searching for nesting locations early also have more sites to choose from than later parenting birds will.

28 VACATION NEWS

If you want to encourage bluebird nesting in your area, now is the time to consider putting up a bluebird nesting box. In the wild, bluebirds compete with starlings, house sparrows and other creatures for cavity nesting space. It’s thought this shortage of natural nesting space is one reason bluebirds readily accept appropriately placed manmade nest boxes. The abundance of bluebird boxes in this area is yet another sign of how Missourians care about conserving forests, fish and wildlife. Bluebird boxes work best in rural locations. Most urban settings are too crowded to attract bluebirds. Nest boxes should be placed in open grassy areas that have perching sites. Meadows, pastures or big yards that are not too heavily shaded are ideal. Perching locations can be in the form of fence lines, power lines or nearby trees. For best results, mount the box on a lone post. Posts can be fitted with a metal sleeve to discourage climbing predators. Nest boxes placed on fence posts may work, but it’s often easy for snakes and other predators to climb fence posts and enter the box during nesting attempts in later months. Tree trunks aren’t the best locations either because boxes are often too shaded and can be easily accessed by squirrels and snakes. Bluebirds will nest at varying heights, but four to five feet off the ground is convenient for human observation. If you put up more than one box, place them approximately 300 feet apart. This allows for a bluebird’s sizeable territory. Information about bluebirds can be found at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s website, mdc.mo.gov. Francis Skalicky is the media specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Southwest Region. For information about conservation issues, call 417-895-6880.

EVENT

Visit the Juior Duck Stamp exhibit

T

he Junior Duck Stamp Exhibit returns to the Lake this month. Sponsored by the Lake Arts Council, Missouri Arts Council, Bass Pro Shops, and the Department of Conservation, the exhibit is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The goal of the program is “connecting students with nature through science and art.” Participating students are encouraged to visit conservation areas and wetlands to learn more about natural settings and their inhabitants. Students can then use internet resources to supplement their real-life experience to create a work of visual art accompanied by a “conservation statement” describing what they’ve learned about conservation issues and challenges, such as climate change and its impact on wetlands, the important natural balance between people and wildlife, and the need to protect our natural resources. Each spring, the student art entries are submitted to state, district, or territory contests for judging in four age-range categories: kindergarten—3rd grade, 4th—6th grade, 7th—9th grade, and 10th—12th grade. From the top three entries in each category, a Best of Show, regardless of grade level, is selected. The various states, districts, and territories submit their Best of Show paintings to the national contest, held in April. The Missouri Best of Show from these entries advances to Washington for a chance to become the design for the Federal Junior Duck Stamp for the following year. Last year’s national winner was Madison Grimm of South Dakota. The stamps become collector’s items, available for purchase from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Post Office, and on line at Amazon.com. One hundred percent of the revenue is used to support the awards and environmental education. Information, entry forms, and contest guidelines are available at www.fws.gov/juniorduck. The Missouri Junior Duck Stamp Exhibit for 2021 may be viewed at the following libraries: Versailles from March 11th—March 22nd; and Eldon from March 22nd—April 1st.
