DAY TRIP story by Vicki Wood
Cole Camp:
Close to home
The downtown area of Cole Camp has lots of quaint stores and restaurants to explore.
RiOak Western Design on Facebook.
C
ole Camp is not too far from the Lake area, and it’s a treasure that holds enough to do for a day. The charming German heritage town warmly welcomes visitors with its reputation of being a miniature version of Hermann, another charming community to the east. There are some similarities with their larger counterpart, but Cole Camp has some history that Hermann does not. Granted, both towns are regions ripe for wine production; Cole Camp is down to one winery now, but still has downtown stores carrying bottles of small-batch local winery vintages. Wine, Antiques, and More not only sells local wines and beer, but they have an extensive gift shop and sponsor regular events. Bunco, trivia nights, Sip and Paint, and din10 VACATION NEWS
ner with wine pairings. The shop offers local-to- Missouri snacks as well such as Hemme Bros. Creamery cheese, Spice Guys pretzels, and Burger’s Smokehouse sausage sticks. Located at 301 E. Main. German Food
After visiting both towns, The German Table Restaurant has authentic German food, and has been a long- standing tradition for the fare in Cole Camp since 2012. Located downtown, it’s only open on the weekends at night, and reservations are recommended. Spaetzle and Schnitzel of many varieties are served alongside famous German sweet and spicy cabbage. The German Table is in downtown Cole Camp at 107 E. Main Street. Open Thursday- Saturday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. April 8 - 21, 2022
DAY TRIP F L E A
The ultra-popular trend is found aplenty at RiOak. They host First Fridays in Cole Camp, a shop local business event the first Friday of every month. One can shop for farmhouse décor and inspirational signs. An old-fash- ioned candy inventory is inhouse right alongside the cow print purses and metal farm signs. RiOak is located downtown at 116 N. Maple St.

Classic Grill
Another long-time business that offers a more homestyle café menu is The Classic Grill. Recently acquired by master food trailer chef Mac Heimsoth, The Classic Grill is run by him and his group of partners who bring their wellknown fried pork tenderloin to the restaurant. Mac has a few changes in store for The Classic’s loyal customer base. Heimsoth is known for his following at the Missouri State Fair for his tenderloins and cheesy ribbon fries. He plans a surprise unique dessert every year at the fair, selling out his last concoction, deep fried pumpkin pie balls. The menu remains classic, but Heimsoth will pepper the menu with a few hints at fair food and some gourmet items from his catering business. Cole Camp is a food-centric little town, with a barbeque and scone business anchoring the front entrance to down- town. But the stores are a true treasure, with a variety of goods not to be found anywhere else. So get your credit cards ready because this will be a Day Trippin’ full of shopping. RiOak Western Design is a huge showroom downtown in Cole Camp. Cute boutique clothing with a western vibe. April 8 - 21, 2022
Happy Feet is a sock store at Cole Camp. How might a sock store thrive in such a small town? Well, first, it functions as a specialty size store, which can be hard to find at traditional stores. Happy Feet carries five different lengths of socks, but that part is boring. What is exciting at Happy Feet are the multiple colors and designs that catche one’s eye from the storefront downtown. Located at 104 E. Main.
WE HAVE A VARIETY OF FURNITURE, VINTAGE,
ANTIQUES, TOOLS AND MUCH MORE!
National Registry
The entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places boasting pre-Civil War buildings where the prairies met the historic Butterfield Stage Coach Trail. There is a lot of German heritage still evident in Cole Camp, with the many festivals celebrated throughout the year. A full day of shopping can be had here with coffee to begin at Handel Haus downtown while enjoying the massive store full of antiques. Other than RiOak and Happy Feet, there are many boutiques downtown Cole Camp to fill a day. Lunch or breakfast any time of day can be found at The Classic Diner. Enjoy wine in the afternoon at Wine, Antiques, and More, or take a short country drive outside of Cole Camp to Wildlife Ridge Winery, a serene and remote country winery sitting lakeside.

Planting native trees
Celebrate the value of Missouri trees and forests during Arbor Days in April by planting native trees and practicing proper tree care.
T
he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invited people to celebrate the value of Missouri trees and forests during Arbor Days in April by planting native trees and practicing proper tree care. Missouri Arbor Day was Friday, April 1. Missouri has been observing the state’s official Arbor Day on the first Friday in April since 1886 when the General Assembly declared that day be set aside for the appreciation and planting of trees. National Arbor Day is recognized on the last Friday of April, which is April 29 for 2022. Get information on backyard tree care – including types of trees for urban and other landscapes, selecting the right tree for the right place, planting tips, watering and pruning info, and more – at mdc.mo.gov/treesplants/tree-care. The MDC George O. White State Forest Nursery near Licking offers a variety of low-cost native tree and shrub April 8 - 21, 2022
seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, and wildlife food and cover. Orders are accepted to April 15. For more information, visit mdc.mo.gov/seedlings. Communities around the state also hold local Arbor Day activities. For more information on Arbor Day and Missouri’s Tree City USA communities, visit the Arbor Day Foundation at arborday.org/. Missouri forests cover about one-third of the state and provide outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, natural beauty, and watersheds for stream and rivers. Spending time in Missouri forests can provide a natural health benefit, too. Exposure to nature contributes to physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure and heart rate, relieving stress, and boosting energy levels. Get more information at mdc.mo.gov/trees-plants/forest-care.

VACATION NEWS 15
BOATING by Doug Beck
The unwritten boating rules
I
’m sure you’ve been over this in a training course — boating rules and regulations keep people safe while on the water. However, there are a lot of things that are not covered in such courses. I don’t mean how to respectfully pass someone, or how to dock safely. I mean the unwritten boating rules that dictate how to act at the dock, or how to behave behind the helm. Generally speaking, how to be courteous and respectful to everyone else on the water. Unfortunately, boating etiquette is not taught alongside coast guard programs or boater license exams. Yet new boaters are expected to behave correctly, without ever being told how to do so. A lot of these unwritten rules are passed down in boating communities, through family members, or, if you are unlucky, by witnessing a trespass first hand. It’s fairly safe to say that if you are new to the world of boating, it’s likely that no one has taken the time to teach proper etiquette, but they still expect you to know everything. 16 VACATION NEWS
That’s all about to change. This article will dive into the unwritten rules every boater should know before you head out on the water. At the Ramp
Boating etiquette is not all about the water! It starts at the dock or the boat ramp, because if you are at a boat ramp, chances are you won’t be alone. 1. Be efficient. Prepare your boat before you launch. Everyone wants to enjoy a day on the water, and waiting in long lines at the boat ramp is irritating. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that ropes are untied, gear and food is loaded, the plug is in, and the engine is ready to go. Oh, and please prepare your boat outside of the launch line. Nothing makes a crowded boat ramp more irritable than the person that backs up the line by running back and forth between their truck and boat while launching. 2. If you are on the ramp, be as quick as possible April 8 - 21, 2022
BOATING (this is why we prepared). Others are waiting to enjoy a day on the water as well. 3. Once in the water, move away from the ramp to allow others to launch. Try not to clog up the boat ramp. This rule also applies at the fuel pumps. Once you have fuel and paid, make space for the next boat. On The Water
Once you are on the water, something as simple as your speed can quickly become an issue in the wrong situation. To avoid any glares, try following these suggestions when interacting with or coming close to other boaters. 1. Watch your wake. Be mindful of the waves you leave behind and where you are on the water. Large wakes in a crowded area can cause havoc, potentially swamping smaller boats and tossing boaters around in their craft. It can be dangerous, and is also a great way to make people angry. 2. Always try to give stationary boats a wide berth. An anchored or stationary vessel typically means that people are fishing, swimming, getting ready to tube/ ski, or just generally relaxing. Try not to get too close, your wake or engine noise will definitely disrupt their activities. Give people fishing from the shore the same amount of space. You don’t want to snag their fishing line.
3. Idle speed or No Wake speed within 100 ft. of Docks and shore line. (check your state regulations, some state it is 200 ft.) 4. Don’t anchor in a channel. That’s like parking in the middle of a highway. You will know it is a channel by red and green buoys marking the sides. Also the numerous boats passing by. 5. Don’t anchor close to people you don’t know. If you’re entering an anchorage, any boats that are already there set the precedent for how to act. Leave plenty of room for the craft to drift and spin without hitting anything. A change in tide, wind, or current can move a boat in unpredictable ways, even while anchored. 6. Be mindful of others around you. Sound carries further on the water, and what you might have thought was a private conversation can easily become public knowledge. If you plan on being loud or playing music, try to stay downwind. Friends and Guests
Whether you are welcoming guests on your boat or are a guest on someone else’s, always remember that everyone has different rules for their vessel. Be sure to respect their wishes and if you are unsure about anything, ask the captain. Below are some basic guidelines to keep in mind.

VACATION NEWS 17
BOATING Educate guests, or ask to be educated. Make sure passengers are familiar with the boat and always show guests where to find extra personal floatation devices. If there is anyone new to boating, take a moment to explain the rules of your boat, like when they should stay seated vs stand. 1. Bring food and drinks. Often, there is no stopping for lunch, so what you bring is what you get. If a picnic is on the agenda, bring food and drink for yourself and others, no matter if you own the boat or are a guest on someone else’s. 2. Carry in, carry out. Keep track of your trash and take care of the water. Whatever you bring out should go back with you. 3. As a guest, offer to chip in for gas. Fuel on the water is not cheap, and the small gesture goes a long way. Other Rules of the Waterway
1. Be polite, and wave. Boaters are a friendly bunch, so say hello to others as you pass. It’s not just nice, it also acknowledges that you see them and are plotting a course accordingly. 2. Help others. This is the most understated rule. Etiquette on the water is about respecting one another. If you see someone struggling, don’t hesitate to offer help. 3. Share the waterway. There is plenty of room, and the beer and music, or whatever venue you are going to will still be there. Be safe and enjoy the boating life. If you are in the Lake of The Ozarks area, please take time to attend the 5th annual Water Safety Seminar, May 21 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Margaritaville Lake Resort Lake of the Ozarks. This is a free event. Doug Beck is co-chair of the Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council and president of the Captains Association of Missouri.
The 4th annual Water Safety Council’s Water Safety Seminar will be held May 21 at Margaritaville Lake Resort from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Free admission to learn about navigation rules, boating hazards, boat maintenance, life jacket safety, meet with vendors and get your vessel inspected for free.

America’s Spirit
B
ourbon is America’s whiskey. Distilled from a 51 percent corn mash, aged in charred oak barrels, and bottled at 80-proof, this American spirit is at the heart of favorite cocktails. Many afficionados call for it neat, and in Lake Ozark, they call for the finest at the Bend Bourbon Bar. The Reineckes, Todd and Becky, recognized the need for an intimate space for pouring and sipping. The vodka wave had crested, Todd noted. He believed America’s historic love for brown whiskeys was the next wave swelling, and he appears to have read the waters well. Bend Bourbon Bar tripled its available space just ahead of Super Bowl Sunday 2022 when the entire bar was booked for private parties. One reason for the bar’s success is the knowledge and experience behind the bar. Owner Todd Reinecke and bartender Mikel Burks know the products and pour what the customers love. High-end products are always in stock. The wine selection consists of 100-point wines, including bottles from Chappellet’s Pritchard Hills vineyard. Fine tequilas and other spirits are on hand as well. A Oaxacan Tequila Old-fashioned is among the most popular cocktails ordered. The star is, of course, the best bourbons from around the world. Guests will find Old Bardstown from the Willett distillery in Kentucky and a blend of 9-, 11-, and 18-year-old whiskeys in the Murray Hill Club from Joseph Magness. They may also order a bourbon most rare, one from among the highest of the higher end Kentucky bourbons: a William LaRue Weller from the antique collection produced by the Bufffalo Trace distillery. A pour of Pappy Van Winkle, long considered the finest bourbon in the world, is also available.

DRINK & DINE
One of the Bend Bourbon Bar’s signature cocktails is a classic Old-Fashioned, made with Buffalo Trace. Drawing from recipes dating back to 1806, the glass is smoked first, using apple, cherry, and hickory wood chips in a ceramic bowl. A rocks glass set upside down extinguishes the flames and collects the aromas to blend with bourbon, sweeteners, bitters, a splash of water, and a delicious Luxardo cherry. A wide piece of orange rind, charred and extinguished quickly, is the final touch creating liquid gold. The bar’s ambience is warm. Fine wood on the walls suggests a hunting lodge. Through the winter’s coldest days, a fireplace emits light and heat. Through the glass, guests can watch the skies ripen with the sun’s vivid rays and fade into starry nights. Full menu service from the Bend Grill and Bar upstairs is available downstairs. Diners above can also order a signature bar menu item: Tiger Prawn Shrimp served scampistyle. However, the Bend Bourbon Bar’s primary mission is to serve the finest spirits in a cozy, inviting space for those who enjoy sipping and savoring. Many have found exactly what they’ve been looking for at the Lake. The Reineckes invite others to follow. Info;

he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer five permits to hunt bull elk in Missouri this fall with at least one permit designated for qualifying area landowners and the remaining permits for the general public. MDC will also offer 400 permits for the taking of a maximum of 40 black bears during the second Missouri black-bear hunting season this fall. At least 10 percent of black bear permits will be allocated to qualifying area landowners. Only Missouri residents who will be at least 11 years of age by the first day of the hunt for which they are applying are eligible to apply for elk and bear per-
mits during the application period of May 1-31. All permits will be assigned through a random drawing. The Missouri Conservation Commission gave final approval to both elk and bear recommendations from MDC during its March 25 open meeting in Jefferson City. ELK HUNTING
For elk hunting, MDC has designated a nine-day archery portion running Oct. 15-23 and a nine-day firearms portion running Dec. 10-18. The five permits will be for bull elk and will be valid for both portions. MDC will require a $10 application fee for elk-permit April 8 - 21, 2022
OUTDOORS applicants. Those selected will then be eligible to buy a permit at a cost of $50. All elk-hunting permits, including those allocated to approved area landowners, can be used in Carter, Reynolds, and Shannon counties, except the refuge portion of Peck Ranch Conservation Area. The allowed hunting methods for each season portion will be the same as for deer hunting. The permits will allow for the harvest of one bull elk with at least one antler being six inches or greater in length. For more information on elk and elk hunting in Missouri, visit mdc.mo.gov/elkhunting. Apply for the elk-permit random drawing May 1-31 online at mdc.mo.gov/ buypermits, through MDC’s free MO Hunting app, through a permit vendor, or by calling 1-800-392-4115. Results of the elk-permit random drawing will be available online by July 1. BEAR HUNTING
MDC will offer 400 permits for the taking of a maximum of 40 black bears during the second Missouri black-bear hunting season running Oct. 17-26. There is a fee of $10 per applicant. Applicants must select one of three Black Bear Management Zones (BMZ). Those selected will then be eligible to buy a BMZ-specific permit at a cost of $25. MDC has established three Bear Management Zones (BMZ) in southern Missouri and will issue annual permit numbers and harvest quotas for each of the three BMZs. Each permit will be for a specific BMZ and may be used on public or private property within the BMZ. April 8 - 21, 2022
Once the specific harvest quotas are filled for each BMZ, the season for that BMZ will be closed. Permit and harvest quotas for the upcoming Oct. 17-26 bear season will be: • BMZ 1: Permit quota of 200 issued with a harvest quota of 20 bears. • BMZ 2: Permit quota of 150 issued with a harvest quota of 15 bears. • BMZ 3: Permit quota of 50 issued with a harvest quota of 5 bears. Hunting hours will be a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. Hunters must call MDC prior to hunting each day to determine the closure status of the BMZ for which they are permitted. Hunters will be allowed to use both archery and firearms equipment with allowable methods being the same as those for deer and elk, except the use of an atlatl. Baiting and the use of dogs will not be allowed. The harvest limit will be one bear per permit. Only lone black bears may be taken. Hunters may not take bears that are known to be in the presence of others bears, including female black bears with cubs. Bears may not be disturbed, pushed, harassed, or taken from a den. Learn more about black bears and bear hunting in Missouri at mdc.mo.gov/ bearhunting. Apply for the bearpermit random drawing May 1 - 31 online at mdc. mo.gov/buypermits, through MDC’s free MO Hunting app, through a permit vendor, or by calling 1-800392-4115. Results of the bear-permit random drawing will be available online by July 1.

hat began as a friendship for Julia and Charlie Barrale has evolved into a partnered musical career, marriage, and a family for the duo. Although the couple call a St. Louis suburb their home, the Lake area has become a favorite performance venue with over 65 dates already scheduled for 2022. The couple met in 2017 when Julia attended Charlie’s album release party in St. Louis. “Our first conversation was about how we were going to play music together,” Charlie said. “Then we went on a date.” That first date took place in October of 2018. In November, they performed their first show together at the Lake when they opened for Tyler Farr at Shawnee Bluff. The couple tied the knot in August of 2020. “When we first got together we talked about our plans,” Charlie said. “We realized that our dreams matched up and it propelled us to do what we do today.” “We traveled all over the country together and we did it so well,” Julia added. “That alone told me.” Charlie’s interest in music started at age four at the piano. He jumped to the guitar at age 11, and started writing songs at 15. He performed in an acapella group while attending St. Louis University and throughout his college years became more of a musician. He sings, plays the acoustic guitar and the piano. Julia grew up participating in the orchestra and choir community. She began playing the violin at age seven, and at only 12 years of age she was the second chair violist at St. Mary’s Symphony in Maryland. At age 16 she moved to first April 8 - 21, 2022

BAND PROFILE chair, and at 17 years of age she performed at the Kennedy Center. She plays violin, fiddle and also sings. Appropriately named PDA Music (Public Display of Affection), the connection between the two is evident while performing. “When we’re playing together we actually make eyes at one another,” Julia said. “Our music is our public display of affection.” Along with marrying Julia, Charlie was thrilled to gain six-year-old Jett, a son from Julia’s previous relationship. This past November, the family grew with the birth of Isadora Charlotte (Izzy for short.). While they love performing together, on occasion Charlie does go solo. Their songbook includes his originals, their originals performed together, and a wide genre of cover songs from the 90’s to current music. “The Lake of the Ozarks feels like family,” Julia said. “It’s our home away from home.” Charlie added, “You just can’t keep us away. We love it there. It’s never stale and the people have been so wonderful to us. On one occasion we even stayed with a family we met. The people are just amazing.”
