BOATING

WAKE for warriors An event for disabled veterans, coming to the lake this summer.

A

great local event to honor our veterans will be making a splash this summer as MarineMax helps welcome Wake for Warriors to Lake of the Ozarks July 21-25. Wake for Warriors is a non-profit organization founded by a former lieutenant colonel of the military who has a love for watersports. The mission is to connect with injured military veterans by sharing their passion for wake and water sports. The hope is to heal the emotional and psychological wounds of military veterans and their families.  According to a press release for the event, Wake for Warriors organizes over twenty nationwide events annually and provides them at no cost to the veterans. They provided the following statistics related to veteran disabilities: • 30% of veterans have disabilities as a result of their service. • 22% of veterans are diagnosed with a depressive order. • Since 2002 more than 200,000 service members have suffered a traumatic brain injury. • In the U.S., 22 veterans a day commit suicide. That’s one veteran every 65-80 minutes. • 40.7% feel like a guest in their own homes. • 84% of veterans say that the American public has “little awareness” of the challenges facing them and their families. Teresa Riley, lake area MarineMax marketing and events coordinator, says the event will take place over four days and will see veterans spend two full days on the water, learning to wakeboard, wake surf and more. From veterans with physical disabilities to mental disabilities, the idea is to learn these skills and heal through learning to overcome the challenge or to heal through simply unwinding on the lake. The event will cap off on Saturday with an open-to-the-public event at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, which will see participants compete in a wake surf competition. This will include locals and invited veterans.  The goal of this event is to raise $50,000 locally for Wake for Warriors. According to their release, patriotic raffle tickets will be available at $100 each with a chance

to win one of three prizes – RED wins a $2500 MarineMax gift certificate, WHITE wins a $1500 MarineMax gift certificate, and BLUE wins a $1000 MarineMax gift certificate. The drawing will be held on July 17, 2021, and only 350 tickets will be sold. Certificates are valid at MarineMax Lake Ozark.  Special edition Lake of the Ozarks Wake for Warriors t-shirts will be on sale for only $25.00 each, and with a $100 donation, you will receive a Wake for Warrior boat flag to show your support while on the water. Purchase a new or pre-owned boat from MarineMax Lake Ozark or MarineMax Osage Beach between now and July 17, and MarineMax will donate $100 to the organization for every boat sold. “As a company we are honored to be able to share Lake of the Ozarks and our love for the water to help support American Veterans.  Veterans make the ultimate sacrifice for each and everyone of us, and we think it would be great if we could show our appreciation and extend a big thank you from Lake of the Ozarks.  We humbly ask everyone who is united by water to help us raise $50,000 for Wake for Warriors,” Riley said.  For more information and to help raise $50,000 for Wake for Warriors, please visit the MarineMax website https://www.marinemax.com. DAY TRIP photos and story by Vicki Wood

Famous Soulard Farmers Market Open-air dining, coffee shops, a park, cafés, vendors and more at the Soulard Historic District

A

lazy weekday in St. Louis during a slow morning drizzle was perfect to avoid tourists to the historic Soulard District in St. Louis. Antoine Soulard is the namesake of the small district, a Frenchman who surveyed the area. It was just a few fields and farms back then in 1840. German immigrants platted the streets and lots, and an urban grid followed. Two-story brick structures on narrow lots resulted from the mid to late 19th century. The quaint neighborhood affords visitors and locals a view of outstanding examples of yesteryear architecture and a taste of more modern cuisine. Don’t discount vintage food choices, however. One’s first stop should be the famous Soulard Farmers Market. Vendors from all over Missouri and Illinois set up shop Wednesday through Saturday in the historic brick building, operating since 1779 on the corner of Carroll and Lafayette Street. Sprawling farm stands are covered, but open to air as well. Among some long time vendors are the Ozark Mountain Orchards Farm and The Nut Hut. Besides purchasing locally raised produce, one can find meat and seafood from small batch butchers and hand crafted soaps. Full time ready to eat food vendors Cajun Corner and Market Bakery and Cafe are open even before all the weekend vendors arrive. Wednesday was slow for business with only two produce sellers present. But the full-time cafes were open. A lovely park with lush green grass bordered in old world black wrought iron fencing sits next to the market building. With benches nearby, it beckons market shoppers to sit and enjoy some food purchases. A stroll across the street is Bogart’s BBQ on the corner and Mission Taco Joint directly across. There is no excuse to go hungry in Soulard Historic Neighborhood. Mission Taco Joint is admittedly hipster, but no apologies for their eclectic menu of taco offerings. At our table, chicken fried bacon flour tacos and 14 VACATION NEWS

smoked duck corn tacos were served by the friendly waiter. The renovated ancient brick store front retains charm from another era, while lined with modern art and bartenders putting on a show of synchronized, rhythmic drink shakers. A portion of the dining room is enclosed, while there is an open air covered seating option, which was very comfortable on a cool rainy day. Open air dining is available all over Soulard and gets creative as only cities do with limited spaces. Epic Pizza and Subs around the corner hosted a trio of rollerbladers at a sit up serving window. A walk down the street is The Historic Trinity Lutheran Church, a prime example of the architectural beauty of the Soulard District with its steeple and bell tower rising above all other buildings.

DAY TRIP

Decorate With Confidence!

$5.00 Off

People are friendly here, strangers talk to each other, and locals greet visitors warmly. Two female walking police officers stop to admire cute little kids walking hand in hand with their mom. The coffee shop back up the block where the car was parked for a couple hours of exploration hosted students working on laptops and drinking cappuccinos. Inside the Protagonist Cafe, readers took every table and studied in comfy chairs. A small gift shop features reading related items and locally handcrafted art and merchandise. The bakery counter is an array of freshly baked cookies and pastries such as Cookie Monster Samoas, Orange Zest Scones, and homemade strawberry pop tarts. The java is good and bitter here; you can have it anyway you want it; Frappes, Lattes, Americanos, and just plain cold or drip coffee. They also serve alcoholic beverages if you choose to unwind and have a locally produced glass of wine or beer while you read. The walls of The Protagonist Cafe are lined with shelves containing volumes of books to enjoy while you sip. The Soulard Historic District is found from I-70 East to I-64S at the Chesterfield Exit. A family of hunters

Lake family hunts onboard a customized one-of-a-kind boat on Lake of the Ozarks.

V

arious types of boats utilize the Lake in the Ozarks. It’s not unusual to see pontoons, tri-toons, cruisers, fishing boats, and even racing boats. There’s one boat that frequents the Lake, however, that’s particularly unique. That’s the duck hunting boat owned by the Charlton family. Mark, Annette, and their three boys Blake (22), Dylan (21) and Tyler (16) reside full-time in a St. Charles suburb. They also own a Lake-front home in the Four Seasons neighborhood down Horseshoe Bend. It is here they build memories boating, swimming and even duck hunting. Mark’s interest in hunting in general started when he was just a young boy. “I grew up in a rural area called Taos, Missouri and I always hunted with my dad – deer, quail and rabbit,” he said. “I was in 6th 20 VACATION NEWS

or 7th grade when I started. My brother is two years younger than me. We would come home from school and go hunting together.” It wasn’t until after college that Mark took an interest in duck hunting. He had moved to Hannibal, Missouri — a town right on the Mississippi River and home to many duck hunters. “The season was only 30 days long then,” Mark explained. “Because of that, the sport wasn’t as popular, and you didn’t see the equipment you see today. As the duck population grew, the season was extended, and the sport grew in popularity.” Prior to getting married and having a family, Mark would begin his hunting season in Iowa in mid-September, and end in Arkansas in late January. This was a ritual for himself and a group of fellow hunters. “You need to have the drive, passion,

schedule and flexibility to do that,” he said. “Duck hunting slowed down after I had a family of my own.” In the early days, Mark didn’t own a duck hunting boat. He eventually purchased a cheap 13-foot boat with a 10- horsepower motor. That led to a 16foot with a 25- horsepower motor, and then a 19-foot boat. Seven years ago, Mark purchased the boat he still hunts with today. This unique watercraft is a 20-foot, commercial grade aluminum boat with a 150horsepower motor and a 72inch width on the bottom. It’s even equipped with a GPS system. But what really sets this boat apart is the customization. A custom blind provides shelter and camouflage for the duck hunters. The boat carries 40 pounds of propane to fuel an oven, gas burner, and four – 15,000 btu heaters. Ice breakers mounted on the underside of the boat enables it to plow through up to three inches of ice. The boat comfortably seats four adults and keeps the hunters toasty in singledigit weather. “I knew this was going to be my last boat,” Mark said. “When I had my 19-footer there was a guy in Iowa who had a boat like this. Someone in Cedar Rapids, Iowa customized it for me.” April 30-May 15, 2021

OUTDOORS When it was originally ordered, the boat was nothing more than an open shell. The aluminum frame is covered with aluminum sheeting to create a rafter like setting. The boat is then covered with the hunters preferred material. Wire mesh is screwed to the outside of the boat and grass matts are attached with zip ties. “Every October, a group of us go to South Dakota on what we call the tumbleweed trip,” Mark explained. “We hunt and we cut a bunch of tumbleweed and attach that to cover the boat. We use tumbleweed because it’s tough, lightweight and withstands the trailering of the boat.” Missouri is divided into three hunting zones, with the Lake area being in the middle zone. Duck hunting season lasts for 60 days, and there are limits on how many ducks each hunter can shoot, and how many they can keep. In addition, there are areas that are off-limits to hunters. Mark also hunts in South Dakota, St. Joseph, Truman Lake, Mark Twain Lake and the Mississippi River. Further destinations from home become overnight trips. A typical hunting day begins at 4 am. Once a location is found, the hunters spread out the decoys and set up. Coffee is brewed, and breakfast prepared on the boat and can include everything from biscuits and gravy to pork chops and eggs. Hunting resumes until lunch, when chicken and dumplings, deer chili, elk stew or a variety of other meals are served. The day ends when the limit is met, or legal hunting hours are over. According to Mark, custom boats like his are more popular in the Dakotas, Northern Iowa and the Great Lakes regions. “The waterfowl world is a huge industry,” he said. “The equipment has become so much better. Everything from clothing to shotguns to the numerous types of decoys.” This season, Harper and Diesel joined the Charlton duck hunting family. They initially set out to get only Harper, but Diesel worked his way into their hearts and their home. Due to time restraints, these black Labrador puppies spent three months at Southern Influence Kennels in Missouri to learn their role in the hunting process. Although Mark continues to work with them on a daily basis, he describes them as hunting dogs 10 percent of the time, and pets the remaining 90 percent. Just this year, each dog retrieved about 120 ducks. “When I first started rabbit hunting with my dad, I didn’t have a dog,” Mark said. “I was the dog. In the mid 1990’s I had a female black lab named Lexi. I trained her to duck hunt. I bred her and kept one of the nine puppies. I named him Bailey, and they both hunted.” For Mark, duck hunting is much more than shooting your daily limit. At the young age of 5 or 6, each of the Charlton boys were introduced to the sport. As years passed their commitments to sports and activities filled the calendar, but the family still found a way to create hunting memories. “It started as a unique relationship with my kids,” Mark said. “And it has evolved into a hunting relationship beApril 30-May 15, 2021

tween them and their friends. One thing you need in order to duck hunt like I do is an understanding wife. I’ve seen couples divorce because of this sport.” For Annette, the rewards of having a family of hunters far outweigh the sacrifices. “I don’t like that hunting season consumes so much of Mark and the boys time, but I love that it’s a sport they can all do together as a family,” she said. “They make special memories together. They are always telling funny stories and laughing about all their adventurous hunting trips, and that makes me very happy to hear how much they love it. They are all together, so I can’t complain.” The Charlton boys, who have their own Instagram page named Mo Mallards, unanimously agree that hunting with their dad is something special. “My dad showed me what hunting was all about,” Blake said. “It’s not always about hunting the animal, but the memories you make out there with your friends and family. He taught me not just how to hunt, but everything I know today. He taught me that hunting is supposed to be fun and something you do with the people you love.” “My favorite thing about hunting with my dad has always been the memories that were made on the duck trips we have been on,” Dylan said. “No matter how many ducks we kill, it’s always a great time and there are always great stories that come from being out there.” Echoing what his brothers said, Tyler added “I love hunting with my family. It’s a great way to hang out with my dad and brothers. It’s a great way to get away for a couple of days and just be with them and the dogs. It’s the most fun when we take the long trips with everyone, those are the ones that are the most memorable. It’s great to be able to see the dogs have fun and retrieve the ducks. Sometimes they work harder than us. On the long 12-hour days, out in the below freezing weather, is really when everyone bonds and has a good time. It’s a very special time when we all get to spend it with our dad. It’s something you remember for the rest of your life. There is nothing like it.” In addition to duck hunting, the Charlton family hunts turkey, deer, dove, squirrel, and they fish. Mark explained that some of the other types of hunting are a solitary sport. Duck hunting, in contrast, is more of a social event. Mark added that he hasn’t met many people who went out duck hunting for the first time and didn’t get hooked on it. “Some people get the impression hunters are just out there to kill,” he said. “When you’re younger, the success is in killing something. As you get older, have kids and go out with them it’s not necessarily about killing fowl. Every time you go out, you don’t necessarily kill ducks. It becomes less about the number of ducks you kill, and more about the whole experience. It’s about everything that happens from the time you leave the driveway to the time you get back home. Pulling the trigger is such a small part of the whole experience.” VACATION NEWS 21

If it’s Greek-style pizza you’re after, that’s Arris Pizza and Pub’s speciality — made with a thin, hand-tossed crust. The most requested pie is the House Pizza, which is similar to the wellknown supreme. Gluten-free and cauliflower crust pizzas are available. They offer dine-in and pick-up service. Sauce options: Red sauce, alfredo, basil pesto, olive oil, and barbecue sauce. Topping options: Traditional meats and vegetables, gyro meat, jalapeño peppers, shrimp, and more. Cheese: Arris uses a seven-blend cheese topping. Specialty pizzas include: Venus made with gyro meat, onions and roma tomatoes; and the Gaea topped with Canadian bacon, roasted garlic, pineapple, and a mixture of blue cheese and pizza sauce.

Nothing is bad when you are on the Lake From one waterway to another, these boat owners are staying put at Lake of the Ozarks

L

akes, rivers, oceans…the options of where to launch the boat are many. Each has its own appeal and unique qualities. But what is it about the Lake of the Ozarks that keeps bringing boaters back? What makes our Lake different from the rest? Omaha resident Raymond Perry II grew up boating on the Missouri River. “We are life-long visitors to the Lake and purchased a place two years ago for the family,” Perry said. “We are avid boaters and have experienced the changes at the Lake, and we left the problems of Missouri River flooding behind.” Mike Walters grew up in Minnesota and spent the majority of his childhood on the Mississippi River. “My family had a cruiser, a house- boat, a cruiser, and then moved to a cabin on Gunflint Lake in northern Minnesota,” Walters said. The family then came back to the Mississippi, and Mike himself owned a 26-foot Sea Ray Sundancer and a 30-foot Carver. After much consideration, he shipped the Carver to the Lake of the Ozarks last year. “The Mississippi was beautiful and had beaches you could pull up to,” Walters explained. “There were few restaurants along the waterway. You can take trips up and down the river, through the locks, and up the St. Croix River. Most of the appeal there was our family and friends.” Omaha Walters had always heard that Lake of the Ozarks was overcrowded and busy. Five resident years ago, a friend of his purchased a cabin on the “quiet side of the Lake.” He started spending Raymond Perry II grew up boating on the Missouri time there and was sold. “I was driving eight hours every other weekend to go to Minnesota from Kansas City for boating, River. Now the family can be found in their 30-foot and that was getting old,” Walters added. “I was spending time at my friends cabin and I saw the beauty Carver on Lake of the of the Lake. It wasn’t overly busy and I started to make friends. We did night cruises, went to restauOzarks. Photo provided rants, visited other friends on the Lake and cruised to see the fireworks.” Upon the recommendation from his friend, Walters made the decision two years ago to purchase a place of his own. A shorter drive, the fact that his family in Minnesota wasn’t boating as much, and his love for the Lake sealed the deal for him. “LOTO is a combination of life on the lake and life on the river,” Mike said. “I miss the beaches and seeing commercial barges. But with lake life, you have your own dock, swimming, tubing, visiting friends and a bed to crash on.” Walters went on to explain that the people at the Lake are friendly, and his cabin community is like a resort where everyone has a good time. Patronizing different restaurants and night boating are things he couldn’t do on the river. Walters sold his cruiser and purchased a bow rider. His advice to others thinking of making the move is from his personal experience. First, one needs to determine their needs. When it comes to a boat, do you fish, sail, have kids who want to tube? Do you want a dock or will you rent a slip at a marina? Walters suggests you know your skill level and get help where needed. Above all, make friends and generate those family memories that will last for a lifetime. In 2011, Ray and Sharon Boyd sold their Iowa lake home of 40 plus years and purchased at Lake of the Ozarks. They left East Lake in Okoboji and never looked back. The Boyd’s used to boat the Missouri River in Nebraska. They have experienced the northern part of the river which is a very beautiful area to boat and camp, as well as the southern part of the river. In Iowa, they boated all six lakes in the Okoboji area. Sharon explained that they loved boating there, but now there are too many boats, and most are too large for those lakes. Highlighting the differences between there and the Lake of the Ozarks, it’s easy to see why LOTO has become their preference. “The real estate taxes are cheaper than Okoboji and there’s more miles of water to explore,” Sharon explained. “There’s more to do at the Lake, and there’s a laid-back atmosphere and friendly people. It’s a longer drive, but it’s well worth it.” Lake of the Ozarks is much larger than any of the lakes the Boyds previously owned on or boated. The pros include plenty of

FEATURE places to cruise to, a longer boating season, and the ability to leave your dock in the water year-round. No place is without its faults, and Sharon talked about those. The negatives include the big boat traffic on holidays and weekends, and not enough places with sand beaches or things for the kids to do. The Boyd’s first boat was a 14- footer with an outboard. Five boats later, they now own a 25-foot tritoon with a 200 horsepower outboard. The advantage, Sharon explained, is that they can now boat year-round. “Do your homework before buying a boat,” Sharon advised. “Your purchase will depend on what part of the Lake you want to boat, what kind of boating you want to do, if you want to boat yearround and how much maintenance and upkeep you’re willing to do.” Sharon added that other considerations include whether or not watersports are important to you. “Boating at LOTO with family and friends equals fun and a lifetime of memories,” she said. I personally have experienced many different boating venues. My boating experiences began when I was two months old, the result of being born to parents who were avid boaters. Right after tying the knot, my husband and I continued the family tradition of boat ownership, and we have owned a boat ever since. Some of the places I have boated include the Mississippi River, the Illinois River, the Chain of Lakes in both Illinois and Wisconsin, Lake Shelbyville, Kentucky Lake, and Lake Michigan. But April 30-May 15, 2021

for the past 26 years, our best boating experiences were from the Lake of the Ozarks. In my opinion, nothing compares to all the amenities of the Lake. This past April, we decided to take the plunge and purchase our long-desired Lake home. For us, the Lake far outweighs any other options we’ve experienced. Weighing factors in our decision on where to purchase included the size and depth of the lake, the duration of boating weather, things to do both on and off the water, and whether or not we could consider the location an eventual permanent residence. Number one on my husbands list: what kind of dock could we have? The size of the Lake and the vast number of dining options along the way was a selling point for us. Anchoring and swimming in different coves, and the uniqueness of each Lake area are things that must be experienced. And mostly, the friendly people we come across and the relaxing atmosphere tells us this is where we belong. On the flip side, the Lake does get busy and choppy on the weekends. For us, that just means more time spent on the dock, swimming, cooking out, and enjoying a cocktail or two. This past summer, the Lake has given us memories to last a lifetime. From sunset cruises to entertaining friends, floating for hours or visiting a favorite dining spot, the opportunities for fun have been endless. From talking to others who spend their time at LOTO I can recall one common message — nothing is bad when you’re on the Lake.
