Five outdoor road trips to consider this year

Heart of your home.

After spending the summer of 2020 on lockdown, more people than ever are ready to hit the road for a fishing or hunting trip.

A lifetime of memories happen in your space, so the details are all important. Your family gathers, connects, and shares here, so everything needs to be perfect and timeless. That’s where we come in. Form meets function... meets quality...meets style.

T

he summer of 2021 is going to be all about road trips. After living through lockdown last year, just about everyone is ready for an adventure. Many of those are going to involve fishing and hunting. A lot of outdoor recreation equipment companies have experienced record sales over the last year. Now those consumers are ready to put their toys to use. A study recently released by the vacation rental house website VRBO states, “Families are making up for travel time lost during the pandemic. According to VRBO, 82% of families have vacation plans for this year, evidence of that pent-up de-

mand for travel.” If you are ready to hit the road to enjoy the great outdoors, here are five trips you might consider to get you on the water or in the woods in the next few months. Michigan: Two-Hearted River Trout

In his short story “Big Two-Hearted River,” Ernest Hemingway wrote, “Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the pebbly bottom, and watched the trout keeping themselves steady in the current with wavering fins. As he watched them they changed their positions by quick angles, only to hold steady in the fast water again.” Anglers today recre-

OUTDOORS ate this experience by fishing the Two-Hearted River in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The river is home to numerous salmonid species, but brook trout are the wild, native draw. Kentucky: Spring Squirrels

Kentucky has a short spring squirrel season that opens in mid-May and runs into June. With a daily limit of 6 and a possession limit of 12, squirrels offer hunters the excitement of filling a game bag. Spring squirrel hunting is fun on its own, but the spring season gives sportsmen a unique castand-blast opportunity to hunt squirrels while also fishing. Canoeing a river running through public land or paddling along a public lakeshore provides for opportunities to spot squirrels from the water. South Dakota: Trout Fishing the Black Hills Streams

The Black Hills Region of Western South Dakota is one of those few special destinations in the Midwest that really has it all. Deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain lions roam the Hills. Swimming in the waters you’ll find crappie, walleye, pike, perch, and of course, trout. Trout are special because they only live in the most beautiful places, and one could argue the Black Hills are as beautiful as anywhere. Hitting the small creeks of the Hills means you’ll likely have a lot of water to yourself. Check out Spearfish Creek for rainbow trout and Rapid Creek for browns. Keep your eyes peeled while wading. You May 14-27, 2021

just might find a nugget of the famed Black Hills Gold.

Illinois: Rend Lake Crappie

It’s hard to argue Rend Lake is not the top crappie fishing destination in Illinois. If it’s not, it certainly seems to be the best known. At 19,000 acres with an average depth of 10 feet and a maximum depth of 35, there is a lot of water for crappie to spread out across. Crappie anglers find success finesse fishing 1/8th ounce jigs on sunk brush in 10-12 feet of water. A 2019 study by IDNR showed 35 percent of crappie were over 10 inches and 30 percent were between 9-10 inches. White crappie dominate at 93 percent of the population. Wisconsin: Turtle Flambeau Flowage Musky

There’s nothing like fishing the Northwoods in summer. Families have been traveling to the Turtle Flambeau area to fish for generations. Musky aren’t the easiest fish to catch. They’re known as the fish of 10,000 casts, but hook into one and you could be ruined for other sport fish. Fishing for musky is hot right after the season opens. Early June is a prime time. Throwing big musky baits is a laborious task, but when you hook one, you know you’ve just done something special. Land one and you’ll have a memory to last a lifetime. See you down the trail… For more Driftwood Outdoors, check out the podcast on www.driftwoodoutdoors. com or anywhere podcasts are streamed.

OUTDOORS Donna Swall, LOWA Executive Director, says the group’s main focus is to preserve the water quality of the lake. One of the most important elements of this goal is riprapping the shoreline. Riprapping helps to keep sediment out of the lake that can create a table for bacteria to grow.  When hosting these kayaking clinics, LOWA members will not only teach participants the skills to kayak, but also the importance of riprap. Swall says that the easiest for them to teach this is by getting people on the water to see it up close and personal. She says their goal is to promote water quality and teach people to appreciate the best asset of the Ozarks.  Swall says that around a half dozen LOWA members will be present at each event and will be happy to teach everyone present. However, the event is also open to experienced kayakers who want to bring their own gear and simply enjoy the camaraderie. If there is a line of people waiting to get in the water, kayaking trips may be limited on time.  Swall says LOWA is excited to bring this opportunity back to the community and is thrilled to give people a great morning on the lake while also teaching about the science and importance of rip rapping.  “It’s been such a pleasure to work with folks around the lake,” Swall said. For more information or questions, call (309) 838-5564 or check the LOWA website at www.Lowatershed.org. Full kayaking date schedule:

Experience Lake area farmers markets

L

overs of fresh produce, rejoice! Farmers market season is up and running around the Lake area. No matter which side of the lake you live on, there is an option for you. Here is a rundown of where you can go to shop.

Camdenton Farmers Market

The Camdenton Farmers Market opened in May and is held every Saturday from 7 a.m.-noon. Market coordinator Sandy Nelson says that the market has a full spectrum of vendors this year and continue to obtain new produce as the summer vegetables come into season. For meat lovers, there are vendors selling grass-fed beef, pork, lamb, goat and more. Nelson says she is thrilled with the amount of produce available, as that is what she sees as the main importance of a local farmers market. Even so, she is also excited about the crafters and artists present at the market in 2021. This includes vendors such as Gail Mosher of Country Primitives, who has been bringing her decorative flair to primitive items for 25 years. There will also be woodworkers, potters and more to showcase their art and crafts throughout the summer. Nelson personally owns Box Turtle Ranch and also sells at the market. She offers a range of warm season crops, and specializes in chili

ON THE COVER peppers and tomatoes. Having both the vendor and coordinators perspective, she says that 2020 wasn’t as bad as many might expect. She says that the outdoor nature of the market helped keep people assured of their safety, as well as the many sanitizing and cleaning options available for patrons. She expects that 2021 will be even better, as many residents prepare for what could be a record summer for tourism. “We have a wonderful community in Camdenton and we always appreciate the support,” Nelson said.

A LOCAL FAVORITE AT THE LAKE!

Osage Beach Farmers Market

The Osage Beach Farmers Market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. through the beginning of fall. The Osage Beach Farmers Market offers an eclectic selection of vendors with everything from slow-roasted coffee and honey to baked goods inspired by European roots and produce grown here in the region. Ask any vendor and they are eager to share their stories and experiences. Meeting the people who come to the markets, answering their questions about homegrown produce and products is all part of the market experience. Markita Marikova-Thompson, a newcomer to the market, said she is looking forward to sharing her creativity and skills as a baker. Originally from the Czech Republic, Marikova-Thompson now calls the Lake area home. She is hoping to introduce market goers to homemade pastries. She will be sharing recipes that her family made when she was growing up. “I’m from the Czech Republic and will bring homemade European pastries,” Marikova-Thompson said. She is looking forward to sharing her love of baking and creativity with folks who stop by the booth on Saturdays to check out her baked goods. Marikova-Thomspson is featuring sweet kolaches and savory goods, like freshly made cheese and prosciutto rolls that she fondly refers to as “delights.” Firefly Valley Farms is at the market offering the perfect fresh roasted coffee beans to pair with the baked goods. Dax and Stephanie Beaman are also newcomers to the Osage Beach market. Their farm on the banks of the Little Niangua River in Roach, will offer a variety of farm fresh products, including their fresh roasted coffee beans and locally produced honey. “We are so excited to be able to bring our coffees and other farm grown treats to our neighbors at the lake. We love sharing our passion with our lake family,” Stephanie said. “Weather willing, we will also have strawberries, apples, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, cherries and apricots. We also have a small supply of orchard honey and farm fresh eggs.” Stephanie believes their bestselling item will be their Sumatra coffee. She recommends coming early or ordering ahead of time. “I love it when people try our coffee and experience what coffee really should taste like. Nothing compares to a super fresh cup of coffee. We pride ourselves in providing the finest quality, most ethically sourced green coffee beans, too,” she said. While Buckeye FarmZ is a familiar name at other markets, this will be their first year in Osage Beach. Owner Dalton Connell said Buckeye FarmZ prides itself on bringing the best from their farm. “We sell pretty much any produce that can be grown in our local Ozarks from asparagus to tomatoes and spinach to potatoes. We also produce some wonderful chicken, beef, lamb, and Non-GMO pork. All raised on pasture from day one to finish,” Connell said. “Tomatoes are by far our biggest seller. Everyone loves a nice big juicy tomato to cut up with some fresh bacon and lettuce for a Sunday BLT after church.” May 14-27, 2021

ON THE COVER Laurie Farmers Market

The Hillbilly Fairgrounds in Laurie is home to a new weekly venture and the Laurie Farmers Market manager hopes it’s here to stay. Donna Batlinger opened the market a few weeks ago and is bringing some quality vendors from the west side. Both businesses along with other local farmers are at the market on Friday afternoons from 3-8 p.m. at the Hillbilly Fairgrounds in Laurie. Coyote Creek Farms is one such producer who farms and butchers non-GMO, antibiotic free pasture raised Berkshire pork and Freedom Ranger chicken.A variety of cuts are available at the Laurie Farmers Market weekly including bacon, ham, sausage, whole broilers, and wings. Chris and Connie Matthews also sell their frozen dozen packs of scones in a selection of several flavors to take home and bake. The Matthew’s scones are featured at coffee shops around the lake such as Higher Grounds in Camdenton. The Licorice Guy in Gravois Mills is new to the Westside but not a novice to the candy business. Lexi Kirk moved to the Gravois Mills from Iowa recently bringing her family’s branded recipe for licorice with her. The Licorice Guy is in over 50 outlets nationwide including Florida, Ohio, and 13 other states. Her booth will be present at lake area fairs and festivals this year. Along with the ever popular black and red licorice, Kirk offers cinnamon, blue raspberry, chocolate, and green apple. Additional vendors are needed. Call Donna Batlinger at 573374-8776 or 573-836-5280 for more information.

Eldon Farmers Market

The Eldon Farmer’s Market is located at Rock Island Park in Eldon. They are open every Friday from 3-6 p.m. until September. Coordinators Lori Ellis and Gabrielle Branstetter are anticipating 15 vendors to participate each week. They say that some weeks will have more than others. At the Eldon Farmer’s Market all items sold must be homemade or homegrown. Shoppers can expect to find freshly picked vegetables, fruits, honey, baked goods, flowers, handmade aprons, pot holders and more. Sunrise Farm Market

Open from April through September, this Sunrise Beach market has been in businesses for 23 years. Always popular is the selection of rod iron and garden metal art, and this time of year people are after hanging baskets and flowers. There is a wide variety available, along with vegetable plants, herbs and perennials in the greenhouse. Pottery, including larger pieces, are also a favorite among shoppers. Great for the yard or dock. Fresh produce is available as well as canned items and other locally-made foods. There is a selection of homemade pie and baked goods from Mennonite businesses from the area. As the weather warms up, more local produce will come in but right now asparagus, tomatoes and leaf lettuce is available. Sunrise Farm Market is located off of Hwy. 5. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sundays.

Newcomers/Longtimers celebrates 60 years

A

fter what seems like an eternity, the ladies of The Newcomers/Longtimers Club are finally able to re-start some of their activities and gatherings. For those who are unfamiliar with the group, N/L is the largest social organization for women at the Lake of the Ozarks and is open to both full and part time residents of the Lake. The organization, which currently has nearly 300 members, has a very long and colorful history. Nearly 60 years ago, a small group of ladies at the Lake of the Ozarks were bemoaning the plight of so many women at that time — the challenge of meeting new friends and socializing in the Lake area. Back then, bars and restaurants were few, social events were rare and far between, and life in general focused around small communities and even smaller churches. The ladies had the gem of an idea for a club for women that would provide them opportunities to meet and socialize on a regular basis. So they put the word out and hosted a card party one Thursday morning in 1964 at Lou Larson’s house. They had such a nice time they decided they were on to something, and arranged to meet again. And again. And for the next 57 years, on the first Thursday of the month, the club has met for Cards and Games, initially at members’ homes. As the club membership

grew, they moved to local restaurants, hotels and churches and started adding more and more activities for the ladies to enjoy. Eventually hundreds of women became part of what for many has become a life-changing organization. Although the Lake has grown and evolved to offer so much more over the decades, one thing hasn’t changed. Many women who move to the Lake are retired and no longer have a workplace social circle to rely on, so they face stiff challenges when it comes to making new friends. For Karen Robinson, the group’s president-elect for the 2021-22 season, it was a situation she could relate to. “My husband and I bought a resort here in 2007 and for the first five years, we struggled to find our social life at the Lake and were terribly unhappy,” she said. “After joining Newcomers in 2012, our lives completely changed. I can say without question that when we sold our business four years ago, the friendships we’d made through this organization were the reason we chose to stay at the Lake. It has been a life-altering experience.” From the beginning, the group has been devoted to providing social enrichment for its ladies. The activities offered by the group are many and varied, and expand from year to year to meet the interests of the members. In addition to the 50+ year tradition of May 14-27, 2021

Thursday morning cards and games, from October through May the club hosts monthly luncheons, happy hours, movie days, book clubs, ladies and couples Bunco, dining out events, and craft clubs among many other activities. The group also offers monthly “Diners Drive-Ins and Dives” road trips and sponsors events such as trips to the Fox Theater in St Louis., visits to Arrow Rock and Warm Springs Ranch, and bus trips to the wineries in Hermann. Several of the more popular activities such as Happy Hour and Ladies Bunco continue through the summer months as well. In a major step forward, a few years back a need was recognized to provide a social outlet for men in the Lake area, who also struggled to make social connections. As a result, many activities have also been opened up to include husbands and partners, a move which has created new and growing interest in the group. While N/L is primarily a social organization, over time the group also began to understand the positive impact and help it could provide the residents of the Lake. Through contributions of the combined skills and talents of its membership, the group has done a great deal to enhance life in the Lake area. An active Community Relations program identifies needs area-wide, and each month at its luncheon, a speaker from a local non-profit organization is invited to address the group about its mission. Programs are also presented to raise awareness of issues such as Human Trafficking and do-

mestic violence. The money raised from a raffle held during the lunch is donated on the spot to the guest charity. And where special help is required, the group has thrown its energy into sponsoring drives for food pantries, collecting blankets and suitcases for children in foster care, providing supplies for local animal shelters, and generally jumping in whenever help is needed. It’s primary fundraiser, however, is the N/L Home Tour, held each year on the weekend before Memorial Day. Prior to the pandemic, which put the tour on hold, more than $300,000 had been raised for the benefit of charities, organizations and scholarships around the area. Among the many beneficiaries of the group’s charitable work are Citizens Against Domestic Violence, Hope House, Kids’ Harbor, Lake Regional’s Sexual Assault Response Team, Wonderland Camp, and the Buddy Pack Program. The scholarships awarded every year are not only for traditional courses of study such as business and nursing, but also for individuals pursuing expertise in marine technology and other special vocational skills. In the absence of the home tour this year, as the group waits for life to return to normal, they are sponsoring a Road Rally on May 23 for its members and their guests as an alternative means of raising funds for its charitable endeavors. The organization is hopeful that the Home Tour can return in 2022. The legacy of Newcomers/Longtimers is expected to extend long into the fuMay 14-27, 2021

FEATURE ture as it continues to have a profound impact on the lives of the ladies at the Lake. “When I was invited to a Newcomers/Longtimers luncheon, I had no idea how much this group of women would enrich and change my life,” said Anne Koepke, who served as president of the organization in 2015-16. “It is more than a club, it is a social organization of hundreds of women who come together after moving to this area from all over the United States.
