DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood

Missouri River Steamboat days

The Katy Trail State Park runs 240 miles between Clinton and Machens with 26 trailheads, including one in Rocheport. Charming restaurants and boutiques are a great stop-off along the trail.

Missouri Division of Tourism photos

C

ommerce in Missouri took a hard hit with the Civil War from 1861-1865. One area in particular took on a second wave, when at the end of the war years in 1864, Sterling Price tried to revamp a final acquisition of the Booneslick Country area with a high concentration of pro-confederacy civilians there. Four days before “Bloody Bill” Anderson’s raid and massacre on Union forces at Centralia, he tore up and burned a business district in Rocheport on his way there. What Anderson didn’t count on was the strength of the steamboat commerce at Rocheport, which thrived long before the Civil War. It continued to carry the small town through those hard times, and birthed what is still a popular tourist spot today. Steamboat merchants enjoyed a thriving business at Rocheport’s low docking inlets naturally snuggled up to 12 VACATION NEWS

the rocky cliff faces. The name of the town was originally designated as “Rockport.” It changed when a French missionary showed up later when the town was being platted and Roche happened to be his name. When walking or biking the Katy Trail from the visitor’s center, a short journey takes one to the areas that can clearly still be imagined with river commerce coming and going. There are humble roots there, however. Rocheport’s river trade began with one man and a ferry. John Gray opened a single ferry in 1819. By 1835 there were stores in Rocheport, and two years later there were many more ferries and became a busy crossing for travelers heading west. Daily landings of steamboats at Rocheport June 3-16, 2022

DAY TRIP by 1849 had established the town as the largest shipping point between St. Louis and St. Joseph with a population of 500 citizens and 200 slaves. Along with all of the imported goods grown or produced rolling out of Rocheport by boat, ice became a big commodity in the winter months. Ice was cut from the river and stored in ice houses insulated with sawdust and straw. There are still very old stone structures that can be seen peeking through the wooded river bottoms along the Katy Trail that possibly could be that storage mentioned. The first steamboats were not without problems. It was dangerous, hard work. Boiler problems caused fires, and injuries and burns of workers were common. The frequency of contagious illness was also a reality for river commerce. A cholera epidemic hit Rocheport in 1833, 1849, and 1852. Nevertheless, the town commerce thrived. Floods were a difficulty, at times covering the perfect docking conditions with flood waters that would reach to the downtown businesses. The mode of travel became so reliable that people began riding along with goods, and enjoying excursions, with nighttime excursions being a favorite of residents and visitors. An excursion to the once named Mammoth Cave, three miles below Rocheport was advertised by The Plow Boy steamboat. The Rocheport Cave Conservation Area still exists and can be visited by walking the Katy Trail from the train depot toward the Lewis and Clark trail points highlighted on the handy visitor boards outside the Rocheport Katy Trail visitors center. June 3-16, 2022

Steamboat days were over when the railroad came through, although a few excursions lingered until the 1920s. You can still take your own excursion by river, and imagine the popularity of what this section of the Missouri River had to offer by checking out Mighty Mo Canoe Rental. Easily found at 101 Lewis Street in Rocheport, this company will guide visitors on their very own river experience. The paddle expedition by kayak or canoe takes groups on one of the most scenic journeys of the Missouri River. It pinpoints Lewis and Clark Expedition stops, and Native American heritage, establishing their existence in the area. Online reservations at www.mighty-mo.com are suggested and the adventure begins each Saturday at 1 p.m. from Katy Trail Bed and Bikefest. It’s only $35 per person. This leaves plenty of money to have a nice meal while in town. There are handy food grabs for adventurers right up to the trail. Meriweather Café and Bike Shop is the choice for this day trip because it was convenient, located right on the parking lot of the Katy Trail. It was exciting to find that they are focused on serving food sourced from local ingredients. Boasting 10 local producers, the Meriweather Café is a good balance of healthy and hearty, perfect for all of the outdoorsy visitors to the trail. Anything made with Missouri local Hemme Bros. Cheese is a good thing, and this menu features it. Smoothie bowls or house made granola smothered in local honey looks good. But for a full day of adventuring, their fluffy stacks of pancakes are more fitting. After expending a lot of energy exploring the river, one can return for dinner for a warming bowl of chili, corn chowder, or a Hemme Bros. Cheese smothered burger. Meriweather’s Café and Bike Shop is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily but closed on Wednesdays at 700 1st Street, Rocheport. *Sources -- www.waymarking.com, www.hmdb.org, Rocheport Chamber of Commerce

FISHING

Get hooked with free fishing days

T

he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to get hooked on fishing through its Free Fishing Days June 11 and 12. During Free Fishing Days, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. Free Fishing Days is an annual MDC event that takes place statewide during the Saturday and Sunday following the first Monday in June. Aside from not needing permits, other fishing regulations remain in effect during Free Fishing Days, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas. Trespass laws remain in effect on private property. MDC reminds anglers in Missouri that fishing permits are required before

and after June 11 and 12, unless an angler is exempt by age or other factors. All other fishing regulations are also in effect. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish. Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with more than 20 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers. Learn more about fishing in Missouri at mdc. mo.gov/fishing. Want to learn to fish? MDC’s Discover Nature – Fishing Program provides a series of free lessons throughout the state. All fishing gear is provided. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/discover-nature-fishing. Need fishing gear? MDC works with numerous libraries and other locations around the state to loan fishing gear for

free. Loaner gear includes fishing poles and simple tackle box with hooks, sinkers, and bobbers. Worms, minnows, or other bait are not provided. Find MDC Rod and Reel Loaner Program locations at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/get-started-fishing/rod-reel-loaner-locations. For information on Missouri fishing regulations, fish identification, and more, get a copy of MDC’s 2022 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations where permits are sold, or online at mdc.mo.gov/ fishing/regulations. MDC’s free MO Fishing app can help anglers find the best places to fish in Missouri, access regulation information, identify fish by species, and more. Anglers can also buy, store, and show fishing permits right on their mobile devices. MO Fishing is available for download. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/ contact-engage/mobile-apps/mofishing.

BOATING

(BPT) - Ready to make the most of your summer? Grab your friends and family and get out on the water. Boating gives you the freedom to explore the outdoors and offers added wellness benefits. Studies show being on the water improves emotional health, relaxation and creativity. “The water is open to everyone and provides the perfect summer escape,” said Ellen Bradley, Discover Boating senior vice president. “If you’re looking to get away and spend time with your loved ones, it doesn’t get much better than being on a boat where you get to choose your own adventure, experience the unique joys of disconnecting from stress on land and have fun.” From day cruising to fishing, sailing and watersports, boating offers something for everyone, and it’s more accessible than you may think. In fact, boaters come from all walks of life, backgrounds and areas of the country, with an estimated 100 million Americans going boating each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Discover Boating is the leading resource for all things boating whether you already own a boat, you’re just getting started or simply want to test the waters. These insider tips provide easy ways to get on the water and make the memories of a lifetime this summer. 18 VACATION NEWS

1) Rent or share a boat. Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly, daily or weekly access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters should provide tutorials on operating a boat, share safety instructions and offer suggestions on destinations. Another option is peerto-peer boat rentals, where most services allow you to search by zip code, find a boat near you and then connect with the boat’s owner, gather the details and hit the water. 2) Join a boat club. Find a boat club near you to access a variety of boats. You’ll pay a monthly fee and be able to book your time on the water online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning, maintenance and boat training courses. 3) Take a class. Take the helm and become a confident boater. Sign up for a boating lesson to hone your powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. On-water training courses, watersports camps, youth boating programs and more are offered across the U.S. 4) Find your dream boat. Chart your own course to boat ownership by visiting DiscoverBoating.com, where you’ll find a boat finder and loan calculator tool to help determine your budget and identify the different types of boats that fit your lifestyle and interests. Sunflowers for sale W

Marley Gerber with Sandy Nelson of Box Turtle Ranch.

You can find Marley selling sunflowers most Wednesdays at the Farmers Market in Camdenton. Located on Rodeo Road (next to Head Start) from 3-7 p.m.

20 VACATION NEWS

hen the war in Ukraine broke out, 11-year-old Lake resident Marley Gerber couldn’t get it off her mind. Thinking about all of the families and children being bombed was sad, she said. So she decided to do something about it. With the help of her mom Stephanie, who is a Master Naturalist, and their mentors Sally Bauder and Sandy Nelson with Box Turtle Ranch, she decided to grow sunflowers to sell at the Farmers Market in Camdenton. Sunflowers are the national flower/plant of Ukraine. For months now Marley has been spending her time after school working at the ranch planting seeds and watching them grow. Stephanie says Marley was able to utilize the ranch because Sally and Sandy were her role models, having known them since taking the Master Naturalist course in 2010 when she was pregnant with Marley. Since both Sally and Sandy are Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists with a farm, Stephanie reached out to them to tell them of Marley’s idea and Sandy offered to help. Box Turtle Ranch grows a variety of produce and heads up the Farmers Market in Camdenton where they sell several varieties of heirloom tomatoes, peppers, fresh garlic, jellies and other items inseason. Marley and a number of other vendors set up at the market each week. “She has been blessed with this opportunity. It was a skill that she didn’t have,” Stephanie said. Marley plants three sunflowers into large pots which sell for $5. These sunflowers can grow up to 12 feet tall and benefit nature by attracting pollinators and all kinds of birds. All proceeds, after expenses and supplies have been paid, goes to two Ukraine charities. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) provides food, medical care and emergency supplies to refugee families. The Razom for Ukraine provides humanitarian relief June 3-16, 2022

CLUB story by Charis Patires

Club celebrates 28 years at

W

hen Bil Cooper started the Iowa Reunion Club 28 years ago, he had no idea it would still be going strong today. When he established the club years ago it was an instant success. Today, it remains one of the largest social organizations in the Lake area. Made up of more than 350 members the IRC is open to former Iowans that now live (part time or full time) at Lake of the Ozarks. It’s success comes from its friendly members, affordable dues and laid-back, fun gatherings. The IRC meets once a month year-round. Each event has a fun theme and it’s not unusual for socials to feature games and informal activities. Formerly from Urbandale, Cooper moved to the Lake in 1995. He decided to organize the club after having dinner with friends, all former Iowans, and the first annual Iowa Reunion Dinner was held. Membership was, and still is, $10 per year, per household. Membership entitles households to participate in any or all of the IRC sponsored events and activities, receive the Iowa Reunion Club Decal, the Iowa Reunion Club Newspaper published during the current calendar year and IRC online updates. A majority of club members live at the Lake full-time, Cooper said. It’s a great way to meet new people and develop friendships, especially for people who are new to the area. Many people have made lasting friendships which Cooper says gives him the motivation to keep the club active. For more information, or to join, go to www.iowareunionclub.com

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Tips for home buyers during a seller’s market

A

combination of factors, including low interest rates and a pandemic-driven decision by many city dwellers to look for houses in the suburbs, has created a housing boom for much of 2020 and 2021. That boom has created an undeniable seller’s market in real estate. Just what is a seller’s market? The financial resource Investopedia defines it as a marketplace in which there are fewer goods for sale than there are interested buyers, giving sellers the ability to dictate prices. Since mid-2020, there has been an extremely low inventory of homes for sale but a very high interest among purchasing parties. Data from the National Association of Realtors indicated that, by the end of February 2021, housing inventory fell to a record low of 1.02 million units. These factors have led to a surge in competition from buyers, including bidding wars on homes and all-cash offers to entice sellers. In December 2020, the median listing prices for single-family homes shot up 13.4 percent from the same time the previous year, according to Realtor.com, and it hasn’t slowed down much since. Jeffrey Mezger, a 40-year veteran of the real estate industry and CEO of KB Home, says it’s the best seller’s housing market he’s seen in his career. So where does this leave buyers interested in relocating? Here are some tips. • Consider areas with slower overall price growth. Experts say the southern and midwestern United States offer the best value for home shoppers because of their meager price growth. ClearCapital, which tracks housing values, says San Antonio, St. Louis and the Dallas/Fort Worth areas experienced the least price appreciation from 2019 into 2020. • Get preapproval or have your funds ready. Speed is the way to go if a buyer is interested in a property and wants to make an offer. Real estate professionals say buyers should be “offer ready,” which means having a mortgage preapproval letter or proof of funds for a down payment ready to go. Failure to have funds in check can slow down the process or compel sellers to reject an offer. • Work with a real estate agent. These are complicated times and it pays for buyers to have a professional working in their corner. A real estate agent uses his or her knowledge to make a timely offer and negotiate on the buyer’s behalf. He or she also will provide insight into specific neighborhoods, amenities and school districts. • Eliminate certain contingencies from the equation. Contingencies are factors that must be met before a sale can go through, according to the relocation site Moving.com. A common contingency is the need to sell one’s current home before closing on another. Asking for extended closing periods or certain home repairs are some additional contingencies that can make buyers less attractive to sellers. • Make it personal. Buyers can offer a personalized note with the offer that may connect with the seller emotionally and set one them apart from others who have made similar offers. Buying in a seller’s market can be challenging. But some strategies can set buyers apart from the pack.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Pros and cons to openconcept homes Open-concept homes have become increasingly popular in recent years. An open-concept home is one in which the rooms flow into one another with limited obstruction from walls or other barriers. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 84 percent of new single-family homes have fully or partially open layouts. While they may seem like a new trend, open floor plans are anything but. Early American homes featured open, often one- or two-room units built around the central kitchen/ hearth. This maximized warmth and functionality. Homes evolved as incomes grew, and soon homes had several smaller rooms with specialized functions. What’s old has become new again. However, before diving head first into a new home purchase or a big renovation to realize an open-concept dream, consider the pros and cons of this type of setup to determine if it’s really right for you. Advantages of open floor plans

Open floor plans facilitate the flow of natural light throughout a space and can promote air flow, helping to reduce warm or cool pockets of air in otherwise closed-off rooms. Open homes make socializing easier, even when people are doing different things. While someone is cooking dinner in the kitchen, he or she can still interact with someone else playing video games in the family room or paying bills in the home office. Entertaining also is easier, as mingling with guests is much more convenient when walls are not getting in the way. A smaller home can feel much larger if it employs an open concept. The square footage is not divided into smaller quarters, which sometimes are rooms (such as formal dining rooms) that are only used a few times per year. This eliminates underused spaces and opens up sight lines in the layout. The value of real estate has risen dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and prospective buyers may prefer an open-concept plan because it can help them minimize building costs. Disadvantages of open floor plans

Open layouts are not for everyone. The same sense of space that occurs when walls are taken down may make rooms feel cavernous and less cozy, particularly in homes with ample square footage. In addition, privacy can be hard to come by when all rooms feed into one another. When the kitchen is not separate from the family room space, that makes it easy for noise to compromise the area’s comfort levels. There is no hiding from noise in an open floor plan, as sounds from voices, television shows and appliances tend to echo and blend together. And if the home is a single-story layout, those noises from the main living areas also may carry to adjacent bedrooms. Smoke and smells are another thing to consider. When something on the stove spills over, a small range hood will not be practical for clearing smoke from a large space. Though the aroma of freshly cooked food is enticing, it can make it hard for cooks to keep guests out of the kitchen. Open-concept homes are popular, but homeowners should weigh the pluses and minuses to see if this trend is truly right for them.

RESTAURANT PROFILE story by Charis Patires

A Lake area tradition at Yankee Peddlers

F in.

or 51 years Yankee Peddlers Tea Room has been a fixture in the Lake area, known for quality food and an ambiance that brings in customers over and over again. They often come for the relaxed tea-like atmosphere, but the large portions and made-from-scratch food keeps them coming

Ron Wilson and Donna Weaver purchased the tea room in 2022 after the previous owners, Don and JoAnn Smallwood retired. They had owned the restaurant since 1996. Both Ron and Donna have been in the Lake area for more than a decade, having owned businesses and worked in the restaurant industry. Donna worked for 16 years for the Smallwoods as the assistant manager running it when they were gone. She is the chef and runs the kitchen. She has many years of experience at other Lake area restaurants including at Rizzo’s, Dorsey’s Pit Stop and many others. Ron has owned Lazer Force Lazer Tag for the last 20 years and been at the Lake since 2010. He would patronize the restaurant and even helped them renovate and decorate, and in 2020 when servers were hard to come by, Ron helped serve customers. When the Smallwoods decided to retire, and he put Lazer Tag up for sale, he talked to them about taking over the restaurant. “There are so many good customers that it is a tradition for generations to come to Yankee for special family times or when they visit the Lake,” Ron said. “I have been thanked so often for keeping Yankee going, but it is really my pleasure. Yankee has many items on the menu but is known for its Go Nuts Salad, quiches, Chicken Salad and Turtle Ice Cream Pie, and of course, the variety of teas. The menu consists of four different salads, 10 sandwiches, quiche and combinations of these. Four fresh-brewed loose leaf iced teas and about 30 hot teas are available. Ron and Donna have made several changes in the kitchen to make it more efficient and better for all employees, but have kept most of the atmosphere that people are used to the same. The menu was revised in December to look different, but it has the same food that people have come to expect. Donna makes different soups and quiche each day from scratch and makes one to three special desserts in addition to the ones that are always available. Customers might recognize a familiar face. Mary from Mexicali Blues is now working at Yankee. She’s been serving at various restaurants at the Lake for about 40 years. Once men come in they come back willingly. They are often drug in by their wives or girlfriends the first time because they have an idea that Yankee Peddlers is a proper English tea room with dainty sandwiches. Yankee is not that, serving all freshmade when you order it food in American sizes. “I have eaten here for years because no matter what you get it is always good,” Ron said. “The roast beef ‘Dunker’ and chicken salad are my favorite.” The roast beef for the sandwich is slow cooked for hours from a 20+ pound roast with potatoes, onions, carrots just like Grandma used to make. That is why the flavor is so good. The juices and vegetables from the roast are then the base for the vegetable beef soup.

Garden festival held at Willmore Lodge

T

he Lake Area Master Gardeners are hosting a Garden Festival at historic Willmore Lodge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. This event is a fundraiser for the association’s college scholarship program. The Lake Area Master Gardeners maintain the gardens on the Willmore Lodge property, including a rain garden, an herb bed, and a butterfly garden. The view from the gazebo at the end of the garden path highlights the beauty of the Lake of the Ozarks. Presentations related to gardening will be held inside the lodge. The speaker schedule is as follows: 10 a.m. — Caroline Toole, Lake of the Ozarks Water- shed Alliance, “Planting the Willmore Rain Garden and the new Watershed Management Plan.” 11 a.m. — Mervin Wallace, MO Wildflower Nursery, “Container Gardening with MO Natives.” 12 p.m. — Carolyn Ruglos- ki, FCI-BA, MSc, LAMG, “Growing Herbs in Containers.” 1 p.m. - Alice Longfellow, Longfellow’s Garden Center/Alln-One Outdoor Solutions, “Roses for Central Missouri Gardens.” LAMG is sponsoring a plant sale during this event, with all proceeds going directly to the scholarship fund. There will be a variety of plants available including annuals, perennials, native plants and succulents. There will also be crafts available for purchase. To support continuous learning on gardening related topics, free information will be available at the event. Publications will include the Missouri Gardening Calendar, information on how to replace non-native plants with MO natives, ideas on how to design landscaping using MO native plants, and handouts about various invasive species. A handout on how to locate publications using the Mo Extension website will also be available. Various other publications/handouts include information about mulch, planting and right tree in the right place and tree planting and watering are also useful. Proceeds from this festival fund college scholarships for students sponsored by LAMG. Scholarships have been awarded annually since 2013, benefiting 12 scholars from five school districts in Camden and Miller counties. Annual scholarship amounts vary between $250 and $1,000 depending on the funds raised and the number of applicants. LAMG has awarded over $9,000 in scholarships to deserving students. Admission to this event is free. Donations to the scholarship fund are greatly appreciated. Sealed drinks and individually wrapped snacks will be available for purchase. For more information go to the LAMG Facebook page www.facebook.com/LakeAreaMasterGardeners.
