Creature Feature: Missouri’s annual cicadas

I

t wouldn’t be a Missouri summer without the pulsating hum of its annual cicadas. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages you to learn more about these bug-eyed insects and the important role they play in the ecosystem. Periodical cicadas are making headlines this year as numerous states will be visited by Brood X after spending 17 years underground. However, MDC’s Forest Entomologist Robbie Doerhoff says Missouri won’t experience periodical cicadas for another few years. “Periodical cicadas won’t emerge in Missouri until 2024,” explained Doerhoff. “But the dog days, or annual cicadas, we see each summer will be present, and are super cool in their own way!” Doerhoff said that several species of cicadas occur in Missouri, and they start to emerge in mid-to-late June. “Annual cicadas look like larger and greener versions of the famous periodical cicadas,” she explained. “They spend two-to-five years living underground as nymphs and sucking juices from plant roots with their straw-like mouth parts. During the dog days of summer, nymphs will tunnel to the surface, climb a tree or other object, and molt to become a winged adult.” After molting, which takes just a few hours, cicadas leave behind their famous shed skin. They will then sing, mate, and produce the next generation – all within just a few weeks of living above ground before dying. Notable species of annual cicadas include Robinson’s cicada, scissor grinder, buzz saw, and Northern dusk singing cicada. “The thing that’s so neat about Missouri’s annual cicadas is how unique they are,” said Doerhoff. “You can identify species by their song and the time of day they sing.” For example, the call of a Robinson’s annual cicada is a repetitive, rhythmic “pZEE-ape, pZEE-ape” and mostly occurs in midday. Buzz saw cicadas call from high trees with a distinctive “WHEE-oo, WHEE-oo” during the evening and at dusk. Though their unique calls can be bothersome to some, the annual singing of males is imperative to finding a mate. “The adult males have sound-producing membranes called tymbals that emit that loud, raspy call used to attract females,” said Doerhoff. “Studies have shown cicada calls can reach 92 decibels – which is louder than a lawn mower!” Annual cicadas can be found statewide and are most common in wooded areas, parks, and forest borders. Females lay their eggs in the woody twigs of trees and shrubs, occasionally causing the tips of twigs to turn brown. After hatching, nymphs fall from the twigs and burrow underground to feed off tree, shrub, and perennial plant roots. 14 VACATION NEWS

“Cicadas really thrive in areas where the land is relatively undisturbed for the years it takes the nymphs to develop underground,” explained Doerhoff. Like many wildlife members, cicadas play an important role in Missouri’s ecosystem. They provide a food source for many species of birds, insects, spiders, and other animals that feed on large bugs. The small nymphs help aerate the soil while they burrow underground. Once they die, cicada bodies serve as an important source of nitrogen for trees. Doerhoff stressed the importance of celebrating cicadas, as broods may be getting smaller. “The lifecycle of a cicada is so incredible because they spend so much time underground preparing to emerge, especially the periodical cicadas, and it’s unfortunate their numbers are potentially declining,” she noted. “There are several factors that could be to blame, including urban development and pesticide use. Because they only spend a few weeks aboveground, we still have much to learn about this species.” To help support cicadas, Doerhoff suggested steering clear of chemical use on lawns. “Using pesticides above ground can ultimately harm cicadas,” she said. “Don’t use weed-and-feed products as they can kill tree roots that cicadas feed on. Avoid unnecessary insecticide applications to your trees and grass as these types of pesticides can kill soil-dwelling organisms that help make your backyard a healthy ecosystem.” Learn more about these unique species and the different cicadas you can find in Missouri at https://nature.mdc. mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/annual-cicadas.

f I could only catch one more fish in my life, I’d want it to be a smallmouth bass. Pound for pound, smallmouth fight harder than any other fish I’ve ever tangled with, and they live in some of the prettiest waters to explore. Across the Midwest, smallmouth action is on fire. Smallmouth become active earlier in the year than most other game fish. Especially in lakes. The pre-spawn period generally kicks in during late February when water temperatures push into the upper 40’s. So the spawn in lakes is over, but in some rivers, it’s still going strong. Fishing for native smallmouth in Midwest rivers doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Pick up a few fishing publications, especially any fly fishing publication, and you’ll see a lot June 11-24, 2021

of articles written about river fishing for trout. Most of those articles will be about fly fishing. Smallmouth are just as fun, if not more so, to pursue with a fly.If fly fishing isn’t your thing, you can still use a traditional spinning rod to present a fly. The float-and-fly method of taking smallmouth bass has become a popular tactic. The method is as simple as it sounds; float a fly under a bobber. Depending on the current in the river, you may need to add a split shot or two. The process isn’t too exciting, but the results often are. Locate a promising stretch of river with some deep water. FISHING bottom. Cast, then drift. The chop on the water will bounce your float, giving life to your fly. Add in a few twitches sporadically. Strikes are often subtle. Pay close attention to your float. There is a good chance you will see strikes without feeling them. Smallies will come up for the fly, but you have to be in the strike zone. Experiment for depth. Start high and work low, making numerous passes through a promising run before abandoning hope and moving on. The action may not be fast, but stay alert. Spring is when the pigs come out to play. Smallmouth bed in shallows and on gravel flats, while generally associating with some sort of structure, such as fallen logs and boulders. Females will spawn out and move off their beds to recuperate in deeper water, leaving the smaller but more aggressive males to guard the nests. Any flies floated near enough to the nest to pose potential danger have a

good chance of being annihilated. The float and fly method is just one way to catch smallmouth. Spinnerbaits, stick baits, soft plastics and jigs all catch tones of smallmouth. Any erratically fished bait imitating an injured fish should produce, as do typical top water lures, like jitter bugs and spooks fished close to cover. Many smallmouth rivers are perfect for wade fishing. You should always wear closed toed shoes or boots to protect your feet from any metal or glass that may have found its way into the water. If you’re fishing waters big enough to float, there aren’t many pastimes more rewarding the gliding down a river in a canoe or kayaking

and fishing for smallmouth bass. See you down the trail… For more Driftwood Outdoors, check out the podcast on www.driftwoodoutdoors.com or anywhere podcasts are streamed.

Outdoor adventures in the Quad Cities

T

he Quad Cities has a lot to celebrate as 2021 is Iowa’s 175th anniversary, the 59th anniversary of the John Deere Classic PGA Tour tournament, 35th anniversary of the Celebration Belle riverboat, 125th anniversary of the Government Bridge being built and other milestones. The Quad City area — Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa and Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, separated by the Mississippi River — has a lot going on anticipating that travel options will begin opening again. Here are some outdoor adventures to explore. Gardens and estates

Quad City Botanical Center in Rock Island’s new Children’s Garden offers visitors a fun interpretation of the Mississippi, open in May. Visitors will have a view of flowering perennials and native prairie plants. Children can get carried away by their imaginations in a safe and accessible environment with water play. The children’s area has a natural pond that represents Lake Itasca in Minnesota, the beginning of the Mississippi River. The kids learn using fours — the four seasons, the four directions, four-way tests, factors of four, games of four and flowers of four. Adventure begins at the sundial, which the kids will find underfoot. Other adventures include the Tropical Sun Garden, which is 6,444 square feet of climate-controlled space loaded with plants. The area has a 14-foot waterfall, fish pond and a stream with Japanese koi. The garden is home to fruit-bearing plants such as banana, vanilla, coffee, coconut and cocoa trees. Garden seekers will find plenty of outside areas to explore such as the rare conifer collection, a physically enabling garden that is a series of raised beds for those who find bending to the ground difficult, and Pat’s Garden, an interactive woodland garden with a fairy theme and a Hobbit house. Children love the butterfly garden. The gardens offer plenty more for visitors. Visit qcgardens.com for updated COVID-19 safety information and hours. On June 13, the Hauberg Estate in Rock Island is celebrating the completion of a landscape restoration project on a pond and rain garden. Hauberg Estate was designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen, dubbed the Father of the American Landscape. It is one of just 35 complete estates left in the country. In 1905 Jensen was general superintendent of the entire West Park System in Chicago. He also played a role in building support of the Indiana Dunes. Upon retiring from the park system, he began his landscape business, doing 350 estates including Henry Ford’s. Today landscapers have the complete designs of what type of plants were planted and where — they are restoring the landscape at Hauberg back to the original design. Kids will enjoy this trip as there are things to do just for them. Visit haubergestate.org for updates and times. Sports

It is time to play ball in the Quad Cities as the River Bandits are now the Advance-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The River Bandits’ field, Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, was voted the No. 1 minor league ballpark in the country. Visit riverbandits.com for the schedule and updates for the 2021 season. Get into the swing at Palmer Hills Golf course in Bettendorf. Added this year is a 1.5 acre putting green course consisting of 18 individual holes. This is the first of its kind in the region. The surface will have more undulations than a regular golf green to create strategic shots, challenge and, most importantly, a fun experience. Have fun getting outdoors in the Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois. For information on places to stay go to visitquadcities.com. June 11-24, 2021

olf was booming during the pandemic of 2020 and the momentum has continued into the spring of 2021. Golf courses at Lake of the Ozarks have continued to see increased demand and with that some of the courses have made significant investments to update their facilities. Most notably were the upgrades that Lake Valley Country Club and Eldon Country Club made this spring. Lake Valley Country Club spent the off-season renovating their grill, men’s and women’s locker rooms, restrooms, and contracted out a complete makeover of their 23 bunkers on the par-72 layout. The clubhouse received a facelift starting with both locker rooms and the adjoining restrooms with member lockers, carpet, paint and fixtures for the locker rooms, and fresh tile, paint, vanities and fixtures for the restrooms. The Bar and Grill was also renovated with new televisions, surround sound, carpet, paint and redesigned bar seating. Many local companies were used for the remodel including Four Seasons Plumbing, 21st Century Electronix, Barklage Drywall, Inc., and DC Electrical Services. Mammoth Sports Construction, out of Kansas City, was hired to spearhead the renovations of the golf course. Alongside Brad Seidt, General Manager/Golf Course Superintendent and his crew, they got to work on the complete bunker renovation. They began by removing all the old sand from the 23 bunkers. They kept 20 original bunkers in their pervious locations, filled in three existing bunkers and relocated three bunkers. Once the sand June 11-24, 2021

GOLF was removed they reshaped many of the bunkers, dug up and replaced all the drain tile, and reshaped many of the bunkers to enhance their appearance and playability. State-of-the-art bunker linings were installed in each bunker and over ¾ of a mile of drain tile was laid down. This will allow the bunkers to empty very quickly after any amount of rain and should be playable significantly quicker than in previous years. A total of 350,000 pounds of fresh sand was replaced in the bunkers during the renovation, in addition to four semiloads of sod to replace areas around the bunkers and over the drain tiles. The new white sand stands out when you drive into the property and it gives golfers a great visual target as they play each of the holes. Brad and Mammoth Sports did a phenomenal job and I know the members and guests that play Lake Valley this year and for years to come will be impressed. Eldon Golf Club also spent the off-season upgrading their facilities. They started by moving their existing golf shop to the banquet room located adjacent to the

pool and current golf shop. The membership did the majority of the renovations to the building. The area was segmented into the golf shop, offices, restrooms and their new learning center. The learning center is certainly the highlight of the remodel as the club now has two simulators, an indoor practice green, and the golf shop and offices all under one roof. The learning center is equipped with a Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor and a Skytrak launch monitor. An indoor putting green has also been installed where the GCQuad monitor can analyze your putting stroke. Both monitors allow you to analyze numerous shot characteristics such as launch angle, ball and club speed, spin rates, angle of attack, swing path and much more. These monitors can also be used as a golf simulator so you can play 9 or 18 holes on one of multiple pre-loaded courses. Reservations for the simulator can be made online at www. eldongolfclub.com. Cost is $40 an hour. If you reserve the Skytrak simulator part of the fee goes to support the Boys and Girls High School Golf teams at the Eldon High

School. If you want a PGA Professional to give you a lesson and explain how the simulator readings can improve your swing and game, contact Michael Cummings at 573-392-4172. Lessons begin at $75 an hour, and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed in the information you will receive about your game. The professional staff can also custom fit your clubs with the use of the in-house Callaway and Mizuno fitting systems. The membership at the Eldon Golf Club is committed to making the club a unique and special place to be a member or just to enjoy a round of golf. In 2022 plans are to remodel the old golf shop and snack bar into a full kitchen that will service the members, daily golfing guests, and the Eldon community. The golf business at Lake of the Ozarks continues to grow and become more and more popular. With the commitment these courses and others are making to improve their facilities, the future of golf looks bright. See you on the course!

If you’re lucky enough to know a friend with lake access via a dock or cove, that might be your best option for an authentic Lake of the Ozarks dip. However, there are a couple of local beaches that will allow you to dive in for free. Public Beach 1 is located near the Lake of the Ozarks State Park Campgrounds. Follow Hwy 42 past School of the Osage until you see the sign for the State Park entrance. The signage along the route should lead you a few miles until you reach the beach access. Public Beach 2 may be easier to reach, as its just off the road in Osage Beach. Follow Old State Park Rd (which can be accessed off the Parkway) and you will find the Grand Glaize Marine docking area. Right alongside it is public beach 2, which is another open access beach that patrons can enjoy for access to the lake. WATERFRONT LOCATIONS

Many bars and restaurants at Lake of the Ozarks have pools where you can swim up and order a drink. A majority of these locations welcome families, but call ahead or go online for more information.

RESTAURANT PROFILE by Charis Patires, newsroom@lakesunonline.com

Cal-Mex served up at new hotspot

T

here’s a new hotspot on the water serving up authentic Mexican food and the coldest cervezas on the Lake. Located on the Bagnell Dam Strip, and at the 0-mile marker by water, Neon Taco is the newest hotspot decked out in bright colors with a Mexican flair. General manager Adam Purke has 15 years of experience in the restaurant business. He left his job in San Diego as an executive chef of the No. 1 restaurant group in California to bring his expertise to the Lake and has played a role in getting Neon Taco up and running. Doors opened at the end of April. “Fresh is our theme,” Purke says. “We are striving to have great service, even though we are new. The food is delicious and the staff is great.” The menu has a selection of authentic Mexican with an American twist. The most popular appetizer is the Cali-Fries, made of carne asada, queso, salsa fresca, shoestring fries, guacamole and lime crema. Tacos are a best-seller with other items including burritos and bowls. Plans are to expand the menu to offer a larger selection. The cocktail menu is made up of unique margaritas and frozen drinks such as the Cadillac Margarita, White Claw Margarita, Neon Calada and others made with fresh-squeezed fruit. Purke says their goal is to stand out and break away from the mold of what you might typically find at Lake bars. “We do not want to do what everyone else does,” he said. Unique offerings such as the Flaming Cheeto Taco, made-fromscratch salsa and fresh-squeezed juices for their cocktails proves their commitment to being different. Even their distributor for flour and corn tortillas is a small Missouri-based business that sells exclusively to Neon Taco. Indoor and outdoor dining is available. The covered upper deck has a great view of the Lake and Bagnell Dam. Inside the restaurant there is a bar and air-conditioned seating. On the lower level an outdoor bar and band stage is the perfect spot when live DJs provide entertainment on Fridays (5-11 p.m.) and Saturdays (11 a.m-4 p.m. and 5-11 p.m.). There are plenty of dock slips and dock hands to help you come in by boat. Dock slips are open to anyone wanting to walk the Lake Ozark Strip at no charge, the only public waterfront access available. Construction is underway to build an outdoor bar at the streetlevel where there will be even more views of the Lake. The bar will serve drinks only. Before leaving, make sure to check out the selection T-shirts and other merchandise which are big sellers among customers. The restaurant is owned by George Tucker, who also owns Tucker’s Shuckers, The Malted Monkey, Franky & Louie’s and Paradise.

ehabilitation of the Business Route 54 Bagnell Dam bridge over the Osage River, located in Lake Ozark, has been approved by the Highways and Transportation Commission. During their meeting on Wednesday, the commissioners awarded the project to Concrete Strategies, LLC., which submitted the low bid of $1,611,862 The existing Bagnell Dam Bridge was built in 1929. The purpose of this project is to repair the bridge deck, expansion joints and barrier walls and to replace the bridge driving surface and repair the adjacent sidewalk. Rehabilitation is necessary to extend the life and usability of the bridge. During construction, Business 54 will be closed at the bridge for approximately three months. Motorists will need to use an alternate route while work takes place. This project is scheduled to begin after the Labor Day holiday and to be completed by the end of the year. Prior to work starting, MoDOT will alert the public through signs, news releases and social media. For more information about this project or other transportation-related matters, please call 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636) or visit www.modot.org/modot-central-district.  Follow the MoDOT Central Missouri District on social media for project updates.
