Golf has been part of the Lake of the Ozarks since 1934 with the opening of nine holes in Eldon. Seventy years later the final golf course was opened in 2004, the Golf Club at Deer Chase. Three courses have closed over the years, Bay View Golf Club, Dogwood Hills Golf Course, and Sycamore Creek Golf Club. The Lake is still home to 243 golf holes, encompassing 13 different facilities. Just shy of 300,000 rounds are played annually with approximately 70 percent of those rounds coming from visitors spending time at the Lake. The economic impact golf has had on the region is unquestioned and the Lake area would be a totally different place without its golf facilities. There are 15 PGA of America member professionals and many more PGA ap prentices working at the Lake’s courses. Combined experience of these members is in excess of 225 years. We are blessed to have so many experienced profession als providing us with excellent instruction and unique golfing experiences. Did you know that two airplanes have used fairways at golf courses to land their planes? A plane had to make an emergency landing on the finishing hole at Dogwood Hills when it was on approach to the Grand Glaize Airport. Another plane had engine trouble and made an emergency landing on the story by Paul Leahy

The Oaks Golf Course at Margaritaville was once a very popular ski destination for winter visitors. It closed in 1982 but the current building still resembles a ski chalet.

Most of our readers know there are multiple great golf courses that dot the landscape of Lake of the Ozarks, but did you know there are facts and obscure tidbits about our favorite courses?

From farms, to skiing, to hatcheries, golf at the Lake has evolved over a span of 85 years and is now one of the most popular Midwest golfing destinations. We should be proud that all these fine courses are right in our backyard!

Sycamore Creek Golf Course. In both instances the pi lots, passengers and golfers were uninjured and the pilot even managed to miss all the hatchery ponds scattered throughout Sycamore Creek. A cement truck however was not as fortunate as it turned over onto the Syca more Creek Golf Course and ended up in one of the hatchery ponds, causing quite the traffic jam as well as another obstacle for golfers to traverse. Did you know that two courses offered snow skiing? The Oaks Golf Course at Margaritaville was once a very popular ski destination for winter visitors. Manmade snow was produced, the clubhouse was home to the Maverick Night Club and skiers could keep warm by the double fireplace overlooking the slopes. Its last days of skiing were in 1982, two years after the opening of the course. Remnants can still be found at the Oaks, as the building still resembles a ski chalet, the fireplaces are still in place today and parts of the ski lift can be seen when you cross the dam from the tee box on hole No. 8 as you proceed to the green. The Cove Course at the Lodge of Four Seasons also offered snow ski ing. Instead of downhill skiing it was home to cross country skiing. It also went the way of the Dodo Bird around 1980. Farmland played a huge part of the golf landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks, as no less than six of the courses can date their beginnings back to farming. Rolling Hills Country Club was going to be built on some hilly, rocky land south of Versailles when JC Garrison was making milk deliveries and found the new location, where the course is today. It was a working dairy farm when the land was purchased for the course. The Arrowhead Development on State Hwy. KK was once the site of the Dogwood Hills Golf Resort and be fore that it was the Turkey Bend Poultry Farm, which housed White Faced cattle, Broiler Hens and a minnow hatchery. Bear Creek Valley was also farmland. The farm that is now holes 8-15 was owned by a gentlemen that was in the color guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery when President Truman spoke. The ad ditional land was 250 acres of Oak and Hickory trees that were harvested and grown there. Lake Valley Country Club and The Club at Old Kinderhook were both farmland before transforming into their current forms. The Empire Ranch is now the Club at Old Kinderhook but was hours away from becoming the site of Lake Valley Country Club. During ne gotiations with the owner of the Empire Ranch, he suddenly passed away, and another piece of farmland was selected by Lake Valley members across the street which has housed the club since 1969. More than 30 years later the Empire Ranch became the Club at Old Kinderhook. In 1994 Lake of the Ozarks was host to the largest pro fessional golf tournament in the country, the National PGA Professional Championship. More than 300 PGA of America club professionals came from all across the country in Octo ber to compete over four days at the Oaks Golf Course at Margaritaville, The Cove Golf Course at the Lodge of Four Seasons and the newly-opened North Port National Golf Club now the Osage National Golf Resort. Heavy rains put a damper on the event as many rounds were delayed by the elements. Even with the inclement weather a course record was recorded at the Oaks by eventual runner-up Ron Mc Dougal who shot 65 in the second round which still stands today. Another course record was recorded at North Port National (Osage National) by Eddie Teresa and Phil Bland who both recorded rounds of five under par 67. The final round was scheduled for Sunday but was delayed and the tournament concluded on Monday, for the first time in the tournaments history, at the Oaks Course once the field was reduced to the low 72 players. A three-person sudden death play-off decided the champion which was Sammy Rachels. He took home the $32,000 first-place check. Local PGA Pro fessional Kent Dinsdale, currently at Oak Meadow Country Club in Rolla, carded a final round 72 to finish tied for 19th and qualified to play in the 1995 PGA Championship played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

story

I ’m sure you’ve been over this in a training course ... boating rules and regulations keep people safe while on the water. However, there are a lot of things that are not covered in these courses. I don’t mean how to respectfully pass someone, or how to dock safely. I mean the un writ ten boating rules that dictate how to act at the dock, or how t o behave behind the helm. Generally speaking, how to be courteous and re spectful to everyone else on the water. Unfortunately, boating etiquette is not taught alongside coast guard programs or boater license exams. Yet new boaters are expected to behave correctly, without ever being told how to do so. A lot o f these unwritten rules are passed down in boating communities, through family members, or, if you are unlucky, by witnessing a trespass first hand. It’s fairly safe to say that if you are new to the world of boating, it’s likely that no one has taken the time to teach proper etiquette, but they s till expect you to know everything. That’s all about to change. This article will dive into the unw ritten rules every boater should know before you head out on the water At the Ramp Boating etiquette is not all about the water! It starts at the dock or the boat ramp, because if you are at a boat ramp, chances are you w on’t be alone.1.Be efficient. Prepare your boat before you launch. Everyone wants to enjoy a day on the water, and waiting in long lines at the b oat ramp is irritating. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that ropes are untied, gear and food is loaded, the plug is in, and the engine is read y to go. Oh, and please prepare your boat outside of the launch line. No thing makes a crowded boat ramp more irritable than the person that b acks up the line by running back and forth between their truck and b oat while launching. boating rules by Doug Beck

A step back in time

BOATING Unwritten

Whether you are welcoming guests on your boat or are a guest on someone else’s, always remember that everyone has different rules for their vessel. Be sure to respect their wishes and if you are unsure about any thing, ask the captain. Below are some basic guidelines to keep in Educatemind.guests, or ask to be educated. Make sure passengers are familiar with the boat and always show guests where to find extra personal floatation devices.

3. As a guest, offer to chip in for gas. Fuel on the water is not cheap, and the small gesture goes a long way. Additional Tips 1. Be polite, and wave. Boaters are a friendly bunch, so say hello to others as you pass. It’s not just nice, it also acknowledges that you see them and are plotting a course accordingly.

2. If you are on the ramp, be as quick as possible (this is why we arrive prepared). Others are wait ing to enjoy a day on the water as well.

1. Bring food and drinks. Often, there is no stopping for lunch, so what you bring is what you get. If a picnic is on the agenda, bring food and drink for yourself and others, no matter if you own the boat or are a guest on someone else’s.

20 VACATION NEWS August 12-25, 2022 BOATING

4. Don’t anchor in a channel. That’s like parking in the middle of a highway. You will know it is a channel by red and green buoys marking the sides. Also the nu merous boats passing by.

2. Help others. This is the most understated rule. Etiquette on the water is about respecting one another. If you see someone struggling, don’t hesitate to offer help.3. Share the waterway. There is plenty of room, and the beer and music, or whatever venue you are going to, will still be there. Be safe and enjoy the boating life.

2. Always try to give stationary boats a wide berth. An anchored or stationary vessel typically means that people are fishing, swimming, getting ready to tube/ ski, or just generally relaxing. Try not to get too close, your wake or engine noise will definitely disrupt their activities. Give people fishing from the shore the same amount of space. You don’t want to snag their fishing line.3. Idle speed or No Wake Speed is within 100 feet of docks and the shoreline. (Check your state regulations, some state it is 200 feet).

If there is anyone new to boating, take a moment to ex plain the rules of your boat, like when they should stay seated vs. stand.

2. Carry in, carry out. Keep track of your trash and take care of the water. Whatever you bring out should go back with you.

Once you are on the water, something as simple as your speed can quickly become an issue in the wrong situation. To avoid any glares, try following these suggestions when interacting with or coming close to other boaters.1.Watch your wake. Be mindful of the waves you leave behind and where you are on the water. Large wakes in a crowded area can cause havoc, po tentially swamping smaller boats and tossing boaters around in their craft. It can be dangerous, and is also a great way to make people angry.

Doug Beck is the co-chair of Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council and the president of the Captains Association of Missouri

3. Once in the water, move away from the ramp to allow others to launch. Try not to clog up the boat ramp. This rule also applies at the fuel pumps. Once you have fuel and paid, make space for the next boat.

On the Water

5. Don’t anchor close to people you don’t know. If you’re entering an anchorage, any boats that are al ready there set the precedent for how to act. Leave plenty of room for the craft to drift and spin without hitting anything. A change in tide, wind, or current can move a boat in unpredictable ways, even while an chored.6.Be mindful of others around you. Sound carries further on the water, and what you might have thought was a private conversation can easily become public knowledge. If you plan on being loud or playing music, try to stay downwind. Scott Lyons and Ruben Sifuentes of Central Power and Riggings also have a storied past with the event. Their work with well known racers such as Slug Heffner, Doc Janssen, and Bob Morgan, just to name a few. While other names may be more well known these two have quietly in the background had a direct effect on the race and the speeds that have produced Top Guns.

John Teichman was the owner of the home of the Shootout in its final years. Shooters 21 is well known as a staple of the event during its infancy and also dur ing its growth. John was influential in bringing on now long-time sponsor Missouri Eagle, a Budweiser Distrib utor. This sponsorship was key to putting the Shootout on the National Radar. It is rumored that the nightclub remained open its final year simply to allow the Shoot out to provide another year of funding for local Fire and Rescue Departments. Mike Gordon was a firefighter in Kansas when he competed in his first race in 1995. Gordo, as he is Hall of Fame Class of 2022

Factors investing in real estate T

he appreciation of real estate over time has long made owning a home or an investment property a sound financial strategy. Prospective home buyers spend considerable time looking for a property they’re hoping to call home. Various factors, including property taxes and the reputation of local schools, may be considered as homeowners decide where to look for a new home. That vetting process is equally important, albeit slightly different, when buyers are consider investing in properties they don’t intend to live in. Real estate can be a great way to diversify an investment portfolio and earn extra income. Be fore shopping for an investment property, novice investors may want to consider certain factors to determine if real estate is the best investment ve hicle for them.

54 VACATION NEWS August 12-25, 2022

Rental potential and the local labor force Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real es tate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pan demic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rent als. To flip or not to flip Flipping properties gained popularity in the second decade of this century, but figures from the property database curator ATTOM Data So lutions indicates that returns on investments in flipped properties declined for the third straight year in 2020. Though flipping can still yield a strong return, investors may not realize the re turns on flipped properties that they might have realized as recently as five years ago. Potential investors should conduct some research regarding real estate market trends, including flipping data where available, to make the most informed deci sion possible.

Condition of the property Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away any time soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments. Investment properties can be a great way to diversify a portfolio. Potential investors must con sider a host of factors to determine if real estate is an investment they want to make.

Downsizing is a difficult decision that’s unique to each homeowner. Se niors who aren’t quite certain if downsizing is right for them can consider three key factors to make a decision that’s in their best interests.

• Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decision s to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizi ng to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premi ums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.•Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family ho mes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they sti ll use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize witho ut adversely affecting their daily lives.•Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate invest ment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement sa vings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, ma king that a great time for sell ers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsi ze may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equa lly expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can with stand the work and cost a little lon ger, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers ’ favor. Downsizing requires careful consideration of a host of variable s. No two situations are the same, so seniors should exercise due diligence to determine if downsizing is right for them.

ndividuals work hard to save enough money to purchase their homes. And the hard work doesn’t end there. Once homeowners set tle into a new home, they may set their sights on renova tions that suit their individ ual needs. And even when buyers find a home that needs no such work, maintenance requires homeowners’ utmost attention.Allthat hard work is perhaps one rea son why seniors may be a little reluctant to downsize as they advance through their golden years. In addi tion to the sweat equity homeowners put into their homes, all the memories they’ve made within their walls can make it harder to put a home on the market.

1. Minimalist approach: Contemporary and modern homes both employ an approach that leans to ward minimalism, including clean design lines. Spaces are open and airy without the clutter of too many ornate architectural details. While modern homes may have some curvature to their design, contempo rary ones are all about an angular look.

3. Geometric shapes: Modern homes have strong horizontal and vertical elements that showcase geometric shapes in their designs. Contemporary homes often have flat roofs, while modern homes may4.not.Large, unadorned windows: Most modern homes showcase a lot of natural light by utilizing large windows that are not covered up by heavy window treatments or elements like shutters and thick trims. Large windows are the focus of the interior and shift attention to the view outdoors.

7. Updated kitchen spaces: The clean lines and attention to technology and open space generally extends to modern kitchens. Modern kitchens tend to feature efficient, top-tier appliances with addi tional storage and space amenities that keep the room from feeling cluttered.

2. Neutral color palette: Modern homes tend to utilize a neutral color palette. Modern homes may use “earthy” elements, such as wood and brick, in ways that do not look rustic. Contemporary homes rely on a color palette of black and white with shades of gray or other neutral colors.

While some may consider modern homes austere, many others are right at home among their clean lines and airy spaces.

6. Smart elements: Thanks to the proliferation of smart technology, smart homes are cropping up with greater frequency. While smart devices can be included in any home style, they tend to feel like they were designed specifically for modern homes. In a similar vein, modern homes may include envi ronmentally friendly elements, such as solar panels, upcycled materials, added insulation, and energy efficient lighting.

The 21-mile marker has always been a popular spot for boaters. Now a conglomerate of waterfront restaurants, pools and a marina draws visitors to an area that has just about everything for a day on the Lake. Brightly colored houses make it easy to spot the Redhead compound from the water. These seven vacation rentals are a part of the property, too. Performance Boat Center and Redhead Lakeside Grill is a place where per formance boat fans, quality food and entertainment comes together in one location. And it seems that there’s always something changing with each season. In 2015, Redhead Lakeside Grill opened offering a fam ily-friendly restaurant with two levels of dining, and two pools (one for adults and one for children). It consistently is known to have some of the best food on the water, thanks to popular and well-known chef Pierre Torres. It joined several buildings already on the property that includes a showroom of performance boats, a service department, gas dock and storage. In 2020, a lot of empty property behind and up the hill from Redhead became an outdoor-only venue with a 3,000 square foot pool. The idea was to do something that wouldn’t compete with Redhead, but would be a good addition to the Lake and tourists. It was decided to do an adult-only venue that creates a pool party atmosphere during the day and hosts different concerts and events in the evenings. The V-shaped pool has three pool bars, one on each end of the V, and a main bar at the point of the V. Above the bar is a covered stage where a DJ/MC can be found every day during the summer and where artists perform. Any spot has a great view of the performers, and since the pool is surrounded by trees, there is a sense of privacy that not all waterfront venues have. You can take a 5-minute walk to High Tide from Redhead or take advan tage of the trams and golf carts that will do the work for you.The food is casual but elevated. Chef Torres designs all the menus on property making sure what goes out of the kitchen is top quality. It’s food everyone likes to eat when they are drinking — burgers, tacos and appetizers. The tacos are a favorite that includes queso fresco, marinated chicken, pico and fresh guacamole. Different drink specials are offered with each event throughout the summer.

venue erects igloos where guests can stay warm and comfortable with a few of their friends. From November through February the igloos offer a fun winter menu and speciality cocktails. Each igloo is private and fits around eight people. When reserved, the group has the igloo for the evening. Other properties owned and operated by the team at Redhead include Roxie’s Roadhouse on the Bagnell Dam Strip. This small bar and grill serves great food during the day and is known for night life on the weekends. At the 3-mile marker of the Main Channel is The Cave Bar & Grill. Plans are to open this summer featuring a family-friendly atmosphere with a “massive” adult pool and smaller tod dler pool. As the name would suggest, the pool will ex tend into one of the caves on property and is promising to be a unique addition to the west side of the Lake. 13: Ookay 20:

As a retired teacher, Kathy Peironnet under stands the importance of education. For the last 14 years, Kathy and her husband Dave have been actively working in Camp Perrin, Haiti where they’ve helped build a church, rectory and opened a school using donations from private citizens, as well as money earned from the sale of handcrafted, ham mered metal decor made in the village of Noailles, Haiti. Artisans in the village take old, discarded oil drums, burn them out, flatten them, and cut intricate designs using hand tools. Through her business KAT Tracks, Kathy sells these pieces and adds her own creations of jewelry, dyed fabrics, pillowcases, bottle lights and paintings. All proceeds go to the mission in Haiti. The organization provides help with education, healthcare and community projects at 12 mission sites in southwest Haiti. A Background in Art Kathy was born in St. Louis where she taught el ementary education. “In one of my master’s classes I had the privilege to hear the Director of the Har lem School of the Arts speak about how important it is to have a ‘passionate pursuit’ for what you teach. I couldn’t agree more. It is what made it exciting for me, as well as for my students,” she said. Dave worked in transpor tation in Knoxville, Tenn. and later served as general man ager of shortline railroads. Having visited Lake of the Ozarks all her life, and more frequently when her parents built a home in Rocky Mount in 1976, the couple decided to retire at the Lake in 2016. “I have always loved art, both in studio and in galleries and museums, Kathy said. “I started making jewelry to match my clothes and also represent what I was teach ing that day. The next thing you know I had people ask ing me to make them some. In 1996 I started selling at the Sunday Art Market in City Market in Kansas City.” Today Kathy makes beaded jewelry (primarily earrings), hand-dyed fabrics including cotton table and kitchen linens, silk scarves, and clothing. They send me messages every day just to see how I am. They are mainly young, with young families of their own. This IS their income. Their only in come. The artists take pride in their work. It is what they know how to do and do well.”

On a Mission In 2007, Kathy and Dave’s church in Kansas City hosted an informational meeting about a mission in Haiti. The following year they traveled there on a medical mission and assisted physicians with various tasks. “Some days I taught art to the children while they waited for their turn at the clinic. To say the Haitians stole my heart would be the truth,” she said. “The smiles on childrens’ faces tell you how happy they are to be in school. They wear uni forms, which may be their very best set of clothes. The adults are gracious and love to hear you practice your Haitian Cre ole, as they practice their English on you. If you visit a home, it is an extreme honor for them.”

In Haiti, there is 80 percent unemployment and there are no government agencies to offer assistance like there are in the United States. The hammered metal art that Kathy brings to local shows is made in the Village of Noailles, outside of Croix des Bouquets near Port-au-Prince where discarded metal oil drums are plentiful. They are cleaned and flattened to be used to create décor, yard art, or table pieces. The artists draw their designs often with chalk, cutting intricate patterns using nothing more than handtools, chisels and ham mers. Detail is added with specialized metal awls. This art form is often passed down for generations by fa thers or uncles, although there are a few female metal artists emerging. Thanks to her efforts, the St. Mathias Episcopal Church and School in Camp Perrin, Haiti was able to hire five teach ers, a groundskeeper, an interpreter, and two cooks. Children are being fed lunch which is essential to learning.
