DAY TRIP story and photos by Al Griffin
Roots N Blues Festival September 24-26 | Stephens Lake Park
The Blind Boys of Alabama Perform in Columbia.
T
he best event in the Fall—besides students returning to school—is the Roots n Blues Festival, September 24-26, on the grounds of Stephens Park in Columbia, just 90 minutes from the lake. The festival attracts musical acts with a national reputation. This year, Mavis Staples and Sheryl Crow will be on one of the two main festival stages. Larkin Poe, Shemekia Copeland, The Burney Sisters, and twenty other acts will fill the air with music to set feet tapping and hands clapping. In between the headline acts, local artists perform on smaller stages. The festival is always alive with sound. The event is cashless with wristbands being mailed in September. One-day or three-day admission tickets are available, and there is little need to leave the park. Food 14 VACATION NEWS
and beverage vendors line the pathways between the two headliner stages, slinging everything from funnel cakes to BBQ and Glenn’s Café fare. All that’s needed are blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the acts. Standing and dancing are just fine, too. Columbia’s established breweries, including Bur Oak and Logboat, are often represented at Roots n Blues. Both offer tours. Two other breweries have restaurants in town as well as a brew operation. They are Flat Branch and Broadway Brewery. Another dining option away from Stephens Park is Booche’s Billiard Hall, a place nationally known for burgers, chili, and beer. Booche’s has existed continuously since 1884 in downtown Columbia and in its current location on 9th Street since 1928. September 17-30, 2021
DAY TRIP
Top: A Roots tradition, a musician playing on a Cigar Box Guitar. At right: Booches is located at 110 S. 9th Street in downtown Columbia. It’s the oldest pool haul in Columbia, established in 1884.
Another park attraction rich in fall color and free to all is Shelter (Insurance) Gardens. The walkways lead to perfumed rose gardens, golden Gingko leaves, and evergreens. It is 5 acres with a one-room school on the grounds. Trees and plants are well marked for identification. Though not far up the road from Lake of the Ozarks, Columbia is a great destination. Before leaving town, follow directions to stand below the State’s massive Bur Oak tree. It is almost 400 years old and stands alone along a narrow blacktop road through agricultural fields. There are few of its size left anywhere in the U.S.

long hikes in central Missouri
T
he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages Missourians to discover nature this fall by seeking out remote trail hiking experiences on conservation areas in central Missouri. Traversing longer trails on foot, forces us to slow down; to observe and appreciate elements of the natural world on a more intimate level. While bicycling, horse riding, or even a car ride can take us to remote places of natural beauty, hiking forces us to engage with the very ground on which we walk. Small, quiet interactions of tiny pollinators feeding from the fall’s final flowers, field crickets rustling beneath dry grasses, or the silent flight of a watchful owl, all become harder to miss. And the splendor of trees changing color and dropping leaves, turns forests into wooded wonderlands. Autumn offers opportunities to engage with the natural world during a season of change. Finding a remote nature trail can provide a powerful reminder of how we’re all connected to these natural communities and seasonal cycles. Many conservation areas are in remote settings, and most have no potable water onsite. Before hitting the trail, remember to make a plan, tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return, and pack water, food, and any other provisions you’ll need for your time on the trail. MDC’s free MO Outdoors App for mobile devices provides a convenient way to carry digital maps and other information, even outside of cellphone service range. Always pack a paper map and compass, too, as a failsafe. Always check hunting season dates before hiking during the fall. If hiking during an open firearms season, wear hunter orange clothing to ensure you’re seen and identifiable as a human hiker. “There are so many great trails on conservation areas, it’s easy to find the experience you’re looking for,” said MDC Recreational Use Specialist, A.J. Campbell. Many conservation areas in central Missouri offer excellent trails for long nature hikes this fall, just a short drive from home. Some areas feature more than ten miles of designated paths, and many of these areas offer multiple loops, allowing hikers to customize their experience. Learn more about these, and other hiking opportunities at nature.mdc.mo.gov/discovernature/places.
Long trail hikes in autumn offer a unique way to connect with the natural world. Find a hiking opportunity at a conservation area near you to discover nature in Missouri this fall.

ust as gardening season is winding down, so are most area farmers’ markets. But this is the perfect time to hit all of them, and we have quite a few in the lake area. Visiting the variety in different towns helps, and that shouldn’t be hard since there is so much available on varying week nights and weekends. One of the smallest and most underrated is one of the greatest markets the lake has to offer. The Roach Farm Market is so much more than your typical vendors at other locations. It happens every Sunday afternoon from 12 noon to 4 p.m. next door to Quiet Side Quick Stop on Hwy. AA. Approximately 10 vendors line up to serve some unique items as well as listen to live music on the small-event stage. Bring your lawn chair and kick back to the sounds of various local artists singing and playing acoustic guitar. There is some surprising talent that shows up to entertain market shoppers. Fresh cheesecake made by local sisters Freddie and Gena, who are also the market organizers, is sometimes available in keto variety and sells out fast. Fresh, authentic handmade Mexican is offered at one booth, with beans and rice. On this visit, pork street tacos were on the menu. Freddie and Gena say to come back when tamales are made. They are the real deal. Barista Go mobile coffee trailer offering frappes, smoothies and lattes which have become a hit with the crowds at Ozark Amphitheater this season. Of course, there is a small but beautiful variety of flowers, plants, produce, and baked goods presented by local farmers. These are the items that make a market visit a must at the end of the season. Get ready to load your freezers for winter. For the best variety of end-of-the-season harvest shopping opportunities, Camdenton Square Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings is the place to be. Get there early before the crowds which usually peak from 9-10 a.m. Extra-large farm operations set up at Camdenton Farmers Market in the square in front of the courthouse, some opening as early as 6 a.m., although the official shopping time is 7 a.m.-12 p.m. Many vendors start disassembling between 11 and 11:30 a.m. 20 VACATION NEWS
Lebanon’s Sun and Bloom Farms and the Tunas Mennonite Community booths join about four other vendors offering fresh homegrown produce at low prices. Both farms offer fresh cut flower bouquets that have seasonal additions. A coffee vendor/baker from Linn Creek Museum, two pasture-farmed meat producers sell at the market. There are goodies to eat on site like The Hot Dog Maestro with Jacob, who plays piano at area piano lounges, selling hotdogs out of a cart on Saturdays, and sometimes he wears his performing coat of tails and bow tie. He makes incredible cherry lemonade too. He is a hit with the kids. Troy’s Flavored Pecans offers Missouri grown and harvested pecans that are coated and roasted in Stover, and a good supply of raw pecans for fall and winter cooking and baking. The Licorice Guy has five flavors of old fashioned licorice from their family recipe dating way back. Many vendors offer free samples; one can get full just strolling the aisles. Osage Beach Farmers Market is on Saturday mornings as well. Some of the vendors at the Camdenton Market have a second booth at Osage Beach such as The Licorice Guy. There is a beautiful harvest of fall produce, juicy red peaches, fat pears, and a bounty of bell peppers in every color. The fun comes in with a henna tattoo artist and a hot dog truck. Osage Beach Farmers Market is located in the Outlet Mall parking lot in Osage Beach every Saturday from 9am to 1pm. September 17-30, 2021

The flavors of fall are coming out at area markets. You’ll be able to pick up fall plants and other seasonal food.
Laurie Hillbilly Fairground Farmers Market takes place on Friday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. But some vendors are open by 2 p.m. There are always early shoppers there. The Hot Dog Maestro, Troy’s Flavored Pecans, The Licorice Guy, and several other Camdenton and Osage Beach Farm market booths set up with Laurie and Sunrise Beach farmers, as well as those from Stover and Versailles. The Hot Dog Maestro sets up a piano at this market and actually plays his gifted classical style. Coyote Creek Farms has pastureraised meat at this market too, as well as a Lebanon meat producer. The produce is outstanding here, and customers make a bee line for the back stall full of Mennonite Farm raised tomatoes at $10 per box for canning, watermelons, cantaloupe, and canning supplies. The tomatoes were overflowing with this seller and two other tomato vendors. Peppers are full in every box this time of year and at best prices. Herbs to accompany cooking and canning are plentiful and cheap. The Linn Creek Museum Market baker, Kay and her husband Larry are also at this one selling, but they sell out early of baked goods. Linn Creek Museum Market is open on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm to 7pm. This local market has Webster Farms set up outside the front door with her can’t miss big logoed farm box truck. She has some of the freshest produce and baked bread that can be found in the lake area as well as high quality farm raised beef, poultry, and eggs. Her produce offerings right now run toward fall greens. A small produce market vendor is located beside her with peppers and tomatoes. Inside the museum, Ron Wilson with Let’s Eat Farms also brings fresh eggs from his chickens, but they sell out quickly. His produce is small batch and home garden raised, fresh every week and seasonal. Last week he brought potatoes and pears. Another vendor pops in occasionally with tomatoes and peppers, which seem to be in abundance in every market right now. Troy’s Flavored Pecans and Kay’s Market Bakery are also restocked every Wednesday inside the museum market with fresh nuts and pies.

FEATURE What’s unique about the museum market is the overflowing history of the lake area hanging on the walls and in display cases, our heritage of a bygone era at Lake of the Ozarks from the flooding of the area with the construction of Bagnell Dam to the sixties and seventies heyday of rodeos drawing Clint Eastwood and Patsy Cline for appearances. The other big draw of the Linn Creek Museum Market is the dinner that is served. Miss Kay, the market baker, lets her husband Larry man the baked goods booth while she gets busy in the kitchen cooking a The Blue Caboose Bakery is often homemade dinner for six dollars to seen at the Eldon Farmers Market shoppers and vendors. Nachos with selling pretzel buns, cinnamon her homemade queso are available rolls, cookies, and lemon blueberry for snacking for three dollars. Proscones. ceeds go to fund the museum, as well Facebook photo as vendor booth fees. Dining tables are set up in the middle of the indoor market for enjoying Kay’s cooking. There is always a choice of two entrees on the menu, like salisbury steak or chicken and noodles with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, or corn. A lot of working men just pop in for a quick hot meal on their way home after a hard day. Others come to family gatherings to sit around her comforting table. Much socialization goes on in the middle of the market, with regular diners returning each week. Eldon Farmers Market is on Friday afternoons from 3pm to 6pm in the Rock Island Park in Eldon. There is always a good supply of produce at this market. Gabrielle’s Garden, one of the market’s biggest farmers, has seasonal supplies of greens and herbs, turning to tomatoes, peppers and squash and zucchini in the late summer months. Her son Tyler is cranking out hot lamb burgers from a grill to eat on site. They also sell their farm raised lamb cuts to take home. The Blue Caboose Bakery is selling fresh oven goodness. Two other produce sellers offer melons, and small garden raised berries and vegetables since the market started in 2012. Sometimes the market has a live band. Out on a Limb, a local favorite, has played at the market. If you choose to only visit one lake area farmers market, you are missing out. There are a lot of different offerings you’ll find by roaming the various locations, especially at the end of the season. Some sellers just want to get rid of the bounty, and it’s a perfect time to get canning, or fill the freezer. September 17-30, 2021

28 VACATION NEWS
oft jazz, lively Zydeco, and washboard beats call to mind New Orleans where tall Hurricanes and spicy Sazerac go down smoothly. Creole spices and Cajun delights further define the unique Louisiana cuisine, but now, Lake of the Ozarks’ diners have it all right here at home on the Bagnell Dam Strip under the sign for Brick House Cajun Cuisine. Inside this open-air restaurant under gentle breezes, diners will enjoy fine lunch and dinner fare. Traditional jambalaya, gumbo, and shrimp over grits are on the menu. So is an array of seafoods — large gulf shrimp, mussels, crab, oysters, and crawfish. These are served as platters, on sandwiches, tossed with pasta, or fried. Meat choices will satisfy New Orleans’ cravings, too. Andouille sausage, pulled pork, baby back ribs, and juicy beef burgers are great choices for anyone who is not a fan of seafoods. Dirty rice or red beans and rice are sides that please. For dessert, the classic New Orleans’ beignet, bananas foster, or pecan praline pie will not disappoint diners who crave something sweet and southern after a hearty meal. In fact, head chef Terry Larkins designed the menu so New Orleans fans will not be disappointed. So far, his research has earned solid, positive reviews. Diners like having the Cajun option on the Strip, and they like the Brick House Cajun tastes very much. Amanda Hull, General Manager for the front of the house, collaborated with Larkins on the menu, especially the “killer September 17-30, 2021
RESTAURANT PROFILE cocktail” menu. One often ordered is the Smoked Old Fashioned. Another is the gin fizz made with fresh, frothed egg whites. The traditional Hurricane is equally popular. Made with four fruit juices—orange, pineapple, lime, and passion fruit—stirred into Captain Morgan and Bacardi rums with a splash of grenadine, the Brick House Cajun Hurricane is a sweet treat. Brick House orders Gambino’s bread direct from New Orleans so that the restaurant’s PoBoy is authentic. For the muffuletta, Lake of the Ozarks’ own Bread Bowl agreed to bake the special bun. At Brick House, quality counts so the restaurant takes care with its ingredients. Chef Larkins is a 30-year veteran of Lake kitchens. Amanda Hull has seven years in food service at the lake. Cody Kennedy, Food and Beverage Director, is newer to the team, but a fine addition, according to Larkins who spearheaded the redesign for the restaurant space and facilitated the relaunch. So far, the results are excellent. Word of mouth and online reviews promise a great year-round following. Friday through Sunday, Brick House Cajun adds live music to the spirit and flavor of New Orleans in Lake Ozark. More info

MDC offers new permit cards
T
he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) now offers a new design option for its Conservation Permit Cards that features target-shooting equipment. The new design is in appreciation of recreational target shooters and the contributions they make to wildlife conservation funding through their purchases of firearms, ammunition, and other items. MDC is offering free Permit Cards to shooting-range users at its five staffed shooting ranges for a limited time. According to the National Shooting Sports Federation, recreational target shooters are significant contributors to conservation through the federal taxes (Pittman-Robertson) collected for their related purchases from manufacturers of firearms and ammunition. Missouri and other states receive and use these federal funds for wildlife conservation; hunter education; hunter and shooter recruitment, retention, and reactivation efforts; and shooting range development, maintenance, and operation. The new Permit-Card design featuring target shooting equipment shows an over/under hinge-action shotgun, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition, paper targets, and clay targets displayed on a rustic wooden shooting bench. Permit Card buyers can also select from four other design images: a white-tailed buck, smallmouth bass, mallard duck, and eastern bluebird. Permit Cards are another option to MDC’s paper and electronic permits and provide a durable alternative to carrying hunting, fishing, and trapping permits in paper or electronic form while in the field. As new permits are purchased and old ones expire, the updated information is automatically accessible through the one-time-purchase permit cards. Conservation agents can scan users’ cards to verify active permits. Cardholders can verify their active permits online at mdc.mo.gov/buypermits, through permit vendors around the state, through MDC’s MO Hunting or MO Fishing mobile apps, or by contacting an MDC regional office. A Permit Card costs $2 and does not expire. Purchase

a Conservation Permit Card online at mdc.mo.gov/ buypermits, at MDC offices and nature centers, or retail permit vendors. After purchase, the Permit Card it will be mailed to the address on file within four to six weeks. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/ permits/conservation-permit-card. Because of permitnotching requirements and Telecheck steps required for deer and turkey hunting permits, Permit Cards cannot be used as a form of permit proof for deer and turkey hunting. Permit Cards cannot be used as proof of daily trout tags at trout parks so anglers will still need to purchase and wear their daily trout tags. Permit Cards cannot be used to show possession of a Federal Duck Stamp so waterfowl hunters must still carry the document verifying the purchase of a Federal Duck Stamp or the actual stamp. Permit Cards do not replace commercial permits and lifetime permits, which must be purchased through the MDC Permit Services Unit by calling 573-751-4115. MDC Staffed Shooting Ranges Offering Free Cards
Conservation Permit Cards can also be used to register to shoot at one of MDC’s five staffed shooting ranges: Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Greene County, August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Saint Charles, Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Saint Louis, Lake City Range in Jackson County, and Parma Woods Range and Training Center in Platte County. Shooters can use their Permit Cards to register to use range facilities through self-service kiosks at the staffed ranges. Shooters can no longer register by scanning their driver’s licenses. MDC is offering free Permit Cards to range users at all five staffed shooting ranges for a limited time until the end of September. To receive a free Permit Card, ask range staff in person for a Permit Card application. For more information on MDC shooting ranges, visit mdc. mo.gov/discover-nature/places/shooting-ranges.

R
ehabilitation of the Business Route 54 Bagnell Dam bridge, located in Lake Ozark, has begun. week. The existing Bagnell Dam bridge was built in 1929. Rehabilitation is necessary to extend the life and usability of the bridge. Work will include repairs to the bridge deck, expansion joints, sidewalks and barrier walls, and replacement of the bridge driving. During construction, Business 54 will be closed at the bridge for approximately three months. The Bagnell Dam strip will be open. Motorists will need to use an alternate route while work takes place. In June, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the project to Concrete Strategies, LLC., which submitted the low bid of $1,611,862. For more information about this project or other transportation-related matters, please call 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636) or visit www.modot.org/modot-central-district. Follow the MoDOT Central Missouri District on social media for project updates.
