DAY TRIP story by Connye Griffin | photos by Al Griffin

Lost and Found near Echo Bluff and Eminence

P

eck Ranch, the Current River, and the Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry near Echo Bluff State Park are gateways to Missouri’s natural beauty and open-air challenges. Just south of Salem and near Eminence, these three outdoor places will let you lose your daily cellphone cares and find your inner strengths. In something under 3 hours from Lake of the Ozarks, hikers, bikers, and paddlers will breathe in the scent of oak, hickory, and pine forests. Peck Ranch and Elk

With more than 23,000 acres, Peck Ranch offers habitat for elk and a variety of terrain for hikers and bikers. Rocky glades, grasslands, and elevations above 1,000 feet challenge outdoorsmen and women. They will almost certainly see wild turkey and songbirds. The luckiest will spy shy whitetail deer and majestic elk. Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry

Above: Alley Spring is just six miles west of Eminence. Below: Wild Horses live in the wild country near the Current River. Opposite page: A view of the Current River in the fall.

Adjacent to Echo Bluff State Park is the privately owned but state managed Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry for hiking and backpacking. The rugged, natural setting carries people into a past when horses and hikers traveled the ground. Today, however, mountain bikers also take advantage of Backcountry’s trails. To date, there are 27 miles of trail in the largely undeveloped 60,000 acres—plenty of space in which to hear birds and breezes instead of road noise. The luckiest hikers will encounter the well-known wild horse herd, descended from early settlers. The Current River

The Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry includes three creeks and 15 miles of Current River frontage where travelers can see trees dating back to the 17th century. The waters of the Current are considered to be among the finest for canoes, kayaks, and rafts. These are available to rent for a day trip or even an overnight with camping spots along the shore. Lodging for Days on the Ranch or River

If camping under the stars in all kinds of weather isn’t an option, then the Current River and Echo Bluff State parks are good 14 VACATION NEWS

DAY TRIP

choices. The Current River lodge dates back to the 1930s, providing a glimpse of last-century architecture. Echo Bluff Lodge is new and modern. The cabins and rooms are well-appointed, especially for Autumn temperatures. Rooms have gas fireplaces for warmth and romance. A Bit of Glamour on the Way to Outdoor Spaces

Routes from the lake will pass through one of Missouri’s wine districts. The city of St. James, home to St. James Winery, will celebrate the grape and fall September 2nd through the 6th. Heinrichshaus Winery’s annual festival featuring wine and food is September 28. Rolla’s Public House Brewing Company with locations in Rolla and St. James will celebrate Oktoberfest on September 25. On October 9th, Rolla will host homecoming for Missouri University Science and Technology and on the same day, an Arts and Crafts Festival. A different route to the Current River area would October 1-14, 2021

allow travelers to visit Piney River Brewing Company’s spacious tasting room near Bucyrus. Overlooking Missouri fields and forests, the stop in route is sure to please. Special Missouri Waters near Eminence

Blue Spring, one of Missouri’s deepest springs, is 12 miles east of Eminence under a dolomite bluff. Nine miles southeast of Eminence is Rocky Falls Shut-In, a spectacular example of Missouri’s impressive waterfalls. At both sites, hiking and picnicking are on the menu. Thirteen miles north of Eminence is Round Spring, a short hike from a parking lot, but the turquoise waters are worth the steps. Characteristic blue stream waters are also just across a quaint bridge on a path to Alley Spring and Grist Mill. This one is 6 miles west of Eminence. Cellphone signals may be weak or lost entirely near Echo Bluff and Eminence, but so much natural beauty and soul-satisfying moments are found there, too.

Held over the span of four days, vendors from all over the country will be selling everything from small animals to antiques and household goods. Food vendors are also set up It started out years ago as a pigeon swap. Jacob’s Cave owner Frank Hurley used to raise pigeons, at one time having hundreds of them. He decided to sell them and each year the meet got bigger and bigger. The swap meet often has animals such as ducks, geese, and rabbits but vendors also sell tools, crafts, and antiques making it the perfect spot to find something “new.” Cost is $10/carload to enter. The swap meet is open from daylight to dark. Gates to the grounds are open from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Visitors to the swap meet will receive a discount for admission into Jacob’s Cave. Regular admission is $25 for adults ($20 during meet) and $15 for kids ($12 during meet). The cave has been owned by Hurley since 1965 and features a guided mile-long tour. You’ll learn all about the unique formations, geology and history. Cave hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cave is handicap accessible. October 1-14, 2021

issouri is blessed with a variety of trees, shrubs, and vines that make the fall season come alive with color. You can find best places to view the changing foliage using the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) fall color report at mdc.mo.gov/ fallcolor. “Our fall color report is updated weekly from MDC foresters all over the state,” explained MDC Community Forester Ann Koenig. “Users can see where trees are beginning to turn and get recommendations on great places to view the changing leaves.” Leaves change color at different times, so a fall color season in Missouri may last four-to-six weeks. Missouri trees first begin changing color in the northern part of the state, then move southward. Sassafras, sumac, and Virginia creeper are some of the earliest to change, beginning in mid-September. By late September, black gum, bittersweet, and dogwood are turning. Generally, the color change is predictable, but much de20 VACATION NEWS

pends on the weather. Chilly fall nights play a big role in the color display. Sugars produced by photosynthesis become trapped inside leaves. Those sugars are the building blocks for the rich red, yellow, orange, and purple pigments. Cooler nights cause the breakdown of green pigments, allowing fall colors to show through. Koenig noted bright, cloudless fall days are ideal for a good display of autumn color. “As a general rule, the third week in October is a good time to pay attention to fall color in Mid-Missouri,” she said. “Colors are usually fading and leaves are falling by the end of the month.” Missouri’s fall color can be enjoyed from nearly everywhere. MDC conservation areas or Missouri state parks offer scenic views to enjoy the changing leaves. Prairies and roadsides will even display beautiful shades of gold, purple, olive, and auburn with autumn wildflowers, shrubs, and grasses. View MDC’s weekly fall color update at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor. The updates run September through November. October 1-14, 2021

T

he signs flying in the wind grab the attention of drivers —  “donuts.” Since opening The Donut Den last summer, owners Tiffany and Keith Gipson have been busy making hundreds of donuts a day to satisfy the early-morning cravings of locals and visitors. Located in Monarch Plaza off of Hwy. 54, the Den has everyday favorites including chocolate long johns, glazed, maple bars, and a variety of cake donuts but has a unique selection of speciality items too. A chocolate long john with snickers on top; a yeast donut with vanilla icing, Fruity Pebbles and marshmallows; a bacon maple bar; cookies and creme (vanilla iced donut covered with Oreos), and more. The chocolate with sprinkles and glazed are the best sellers.  Kids love the Fruity Pebbles donut. “The donuts that we offer are constantly evolving,” Keith said. “We are listening to our customers as they ask for different types. Just recently we added an apple fritter, a Bavarian creme to fill long johns, and a raspberry jelly filled donut.    A veteran-owned company, Tiffany and Keith moved to the Lake area from San Diego. Keith’s Army contract was up in 2012 and he became a student using his GI bill to pursue a degree in history. Tiffany worked in retail management with Gap, Inc. They moved to the Lake in November 2014. “Starting a business of our own has been an ongoing conversation,” Tiffany said. “We knew the Lake area was missing one, and after weighing the pros and cons, we decided to go for it. “ The store is located at 2454 Bagnell Dam Blvd., Suite 211. Open Tuesday-Sunday 6 a.m.-12 p.m. or until sold out. Hours may change during the winter. Find them on Facebook @TheDonutDen. 573-552-8041

BAND PROFILE

Modern Sounds in Rockabilly New band brings different style to Lake live music scene

C

amdenton resident Christopher Crane was looking for a side project when he formed The Astro Katz in October 2019. A regular in the live music scene at Lake of the Ozarks, Crane says he hit the jackpot when looking for members to make up the band and didn’t have to go far with the amount of talented musicians in the area. “When this band was formed, I was already in a local rock band, but I really wanted to bring something different to the Lake music scene. Something that would be really fun and positive. Being a lifelong fan of rockabilly music, I really had it in my heart to put together a band that belonged to this genre. I will admit I was apprehensive. I wasn’t really sure if people would really dig this, or if we would only appeal to an older audience. I felt like it was a gamble, but I had to give it a try.”   It worked. The Astro Katz rockabilly quartet began playing to packed crowds at waterfront restaurants bringing their style of early American rock’n’roll to audiences of all ages.

BAND PROFILE Q&A What is your style of music? What would we hear if we came to one of your concerts?

The Astro Katz are primarily a rockabilly band. We are dedicated to preserving music history through live performance, and we have a ball doing it! We love to honor the biggies of the genre such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent, but we also do some surf stuff too. After all, we do play a lot at the Lake! We also like to play modern rockabilly hits from the Stray Cats, and some swing numbers as well. We want to give our audience something to dance to, sing along to, remember way back when, and even make some brand new memories. This style of music is all about one word — fun (remember fun?). We want to give our audience a new experience by playing songs that they may have never heard played live before. Lets face it, this last year has been a tough one for everyone, and great rock ‘n’ roll is some seriously good medicine! We are proud to be a part of that prescription.   What is it about performing that you all enjoy?

Performing to a live audience is amazing. Any musician will tell you that when the band is tight, the groove is perfect, and the dance floor is full, it is pure bliss. But we often get to experience something that I think is unique, and on two different fronts. The first is that older couples come up to us all the time and share stories that a certain song we played has special meaning to them, and they haven’t heard it played in decades. They listen and dance, and we get to go with them in this musical time machine. You cannot buy that kind of experience. It’s just so cool. The second is enthusiasm from younger people, especially kids. We have seen so many kids jump on the dance floor and really have a blast. I often wonder how many of these kids, having had so much fun at one of our shows, go home and start going through their grandparent’s record collection. That puts a permanent smile on my face.

What is your upcoming schedule?

This year is going to be an epic year for The Astro Katz. Our calendar is filling up fast for the upcoming season, and we are excited to see old friends, and make some new ones along the way. Last year was a whirlwind. We had so much fun frequenting Blondies (which will always have a special place in our hearts), Bulldog’s, Shady Gators, Dam Good Slice, LOTO Lounge, Papa Chubby’s, and a whole host of others. We have really been blessed with a warm reception from the LOTO community. We are so happy to be a part of such a vibrant music scene.
