BOATING by Lake Media staff
Preparing for winter’s severe weather
M
other Nature can be a fickle presence and the Lake-wide damage she caused from the Lake freezing over this winter will take months to repair. Many dock and boat owners had to figure out quickly what to do, who to hire, and if insurance would pay for damages. In late March, flood gates at Bagnell Dam were opened for several days to offset upstream rainfall and to prevent flooding of the Lake of the Ozarks from spring rains. Two months before, with temperatures well below freezing, turbines at Bagnell Dam worked overtime to produce enough electricity to meet the demand on the electrical grid caused by the weeks-long cold spell. Consequently, the Lake level fell to near record lows to slightly above 652 feet above sea level. Normal for February is 654, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission guide curve. Last winter proved to be a rough one for dock and boat owners The lower-than-normal Lake levels came quickly as on Lake of the Ozarks when the Lake froze over. After the thaw, Ameren raced to meet the electric demand caused by the Lake level dropped to near-record lows and many docks sat the below zero temperatures across the Midwest. That on dry land. BOATING Tips from Ameren Missouri • Below the dam, remove docks from the Osage River before freezing occurs. • Ensure that hinges, pins and other connections linking docks to seawalls or piers have the flexibility to follow water level fluctuations. • Lengthen cables to allow docks to drop as the Lake or river levels drop. • Use a dock deicer to help protect docks from ice damage. Be aware that a deicer may not provide protection from large ice sheets and blocks. • Ask neighbors to keep an eye on the dock or retain a local dock builder or similar contractor to care for the property when the site is unoccupied. Ameren has a list of approved certified dock builders online. phenomenon coupled with ice as the Lake froze shorelineto-shoreline wreaked havoc. The damage was caused by the heavy ice followed closely by snow amounting to 10 inches or more that also caused dock roofs to collapse from the weight, and push the docks farther into the frozen Lake. It was a mess and in some terms a “perfect storm” of events. As docks and boat lifts dropped along with Lake levels cables broke, welds broke, bolts broke. Docks actually bent at the pressure points, partly lying on the Lake bottom and the rest encased by thick ice at the whim of the moving water underneath. Encapsulated foam flotation broke lose as well. It’s not uncommon for ice to form on the Lake, so boat and dock owners should be prepared. There are several things boaters and homeowners need to know now to lessen damage and ways to prepare for another event in the future. Are You Covered?
The amount of dock damage at the Lake will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many dock owners discovered that their homeowner’s insurance does not cover damage caused by ice or snow. One local agent says there may be an exclusion in most policies that dock owners are not aware of that excludes coverage for damage to docks and lifts caused by ice. The freezing, thawing or pressure of water or ice may not be covered in a standard homeowner’s policy. According to the American Family Insurance website, there are some common exclusions to dock insurance coverage that limit what types of damage are covered by your policy. These can include: • Freeze-related damage such as ice damaging the structure of the dock. • Collapse of the dock, unless that collapse is caused by a building falling onto it. • Flood-related damage, including total loss of the dock to a flood. • High winds that cause severe wave action resulting in damage. So, dock owners, it’s important to call your agent and ask for specific exclusions in your policy. Also, there may be a special rider that can be added to your policy for coverage — at a price, of course. December 3, 2021 - January 19, 2022
Plan ahead
Summerset Boat Lift owner Dave Brooks offers these suggestions to prepare your dock and boat lift before next winter. Since the Lake had its first freeze of the winter recently, Brooks thought it would be the perfect time to talk about how in-water de-icers help protect your dock and boat lift. Ice can cause damage to your dock, boat lift and even your boat. How ice causes damage
Ice heaves can occur in bodies of water of all sizes. It’s easy for ice to damage a dock. The freezing water expands, melts, refreezes and expands again causing enough pressure to damage anything still sitting in the water. Large ice chunks floating in the Lake can also move with the current, hit your structure with great force and even get stuck and start to build up. To put it in perspective, sometimes ice heaves are powerful enough to move trees. More commonly, though, the ice damages docks, lifts and retaining walls. Your dock and your lift are both susceptible to ice damage. When a dock freezes, it becomes less flexible and does not move with the water as the levels reduce. This causes structural stress that can lead to joint breaks and twisted boat lifts. Consider investing in a de-icer
One of the best and easiest ways to protect your dock and lift from ice damage, Brooks says, is to purchase a de-icer. The primary function of a de-icer is to protect your boat dock and lift from icy waters. By creating water movement, a de-icer keeps the water around your dock from freezing. Thus, reducing the likelihood of damage to your boat dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition to the de-icer, you should have a professional come check your lift to add antifreeze to the hoses. If you can prevent the Lake water around your dock and lift from freezing, you’ll be able to avoid the majority of damage caused by winter weather. Get one now, before you need it and can’t find one due to increased demand.

Visit a tree farm
T
here’s nothing like the smell of a freshly-cut Christmas tree. And, there are plenty of places to go to get one. Many cut-your-own farms are close to the Lake and make a great day trip with the family. Farms provide a saw to cut your own tree down and often a sled so you can bring it back to your vehicle. Before strapping it onto the roof they’ll shake and wrap your tree to make transporting it back home a little easier. A few places have precut trees and gift boutiques to do some holiday shopping. So, if you still have your Christmas tree to put up, here are a few places we recommend this holiday season and their proximity to the Lake. Randles Christmas Tree Lot (25 minutes)
407 E. 4th Street, Eldon These trees are all pre-cut. A variety of fresh trees from 4-9 feet tall and 24” wreaths are available. Complimentary hot cocoa served. Hours are Thursdays and Fridays 3-7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Cole’s Tree Farm (1 hour, 11 minutes)

here are ample opportunities for visitors at Central Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks - the “Best Recreational Lake in the Nation” - to head off the beaten path and discover the Lake’s natural side on the area’s many hiking, walking and biking trails. The Lake of the Ozarks’ trails present wonderful opportunities to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to view wildlife and discover beautiful scenery along the way. With nearly 30,000 acres of public land dispersed throughout Camden, Miller and Morgan counties surrounding the Lake of the Ozarks, there is no shortage of opportunities to get outside and stretch your legs at the area’s two state parks and 28 designated conservation areas. “There is no better way to discover the scenic beauty of our area than hiking or biking in the largest state park system in Missouri,” says Lagina Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Lake of the Ozarks Tri-County Lodging Association. “There are so many hidden treasures to be found along the miles and miles of trails at the Lake of the Ozarks.” The most popular trails at the Lake of the Ozarks are at the area’s two celebrated state parks. In total, Ha Ha Tonka and Lake of the Ozarks state parks have a combined 26 different trails covering over 57 miles. Each park showcases the area’s unique

natural history, terrain and beauty. Ha Ha Tonka State Park, named the “most beautiful place in Missouri” by CondeNast Traveler magazine and voted the fourth-best state park in the country by readers of USA Today, has one of the most photographed features in the state: the ruins of a 19th century “castle” that was constructed on a high limestone bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring and the Niangua arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. The 3,751-acre park is Missouri’s premier showcase of karst geology and is unique in the quantity and quality of its remarkable geological features. The thirteen walking trails at Ha Ha Tonka, covering more than 15 scenic miles throughout the park, make it easy for visitors to experience the honeycomb of tunnels, rock bridges, caverns, springs, sinkholes and other natural areas. Visitors can peer into caves, climb 316 steps from the spring to the “castle” on a wooden boardwalk that circles the spring chasm, or navigate well-worn paths through the woodland area and the park’s glades. The park’s most popular trails include the 0.4-mile paved “Castle Trail” which leads up to and around the remains of the once-elaborate country estate, the 1.4-mile “Spring Trail” which provides a wonderful view of Ha Ha Tonka Spring before ascend-

Additional details on Ha Ha Tonka State Park, including a history of the park, trail maps and descriptions of the trails, are available at mostateparks. com/park/ha-ha-tonka-statepark. Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Missouri’s largest park
consisting of 17,626 acres and also is the most visited. It is a favorite among backpackers and anglers and also features a 10-mile aquatic trail, accessible only by boat. On land, 12 trails, ranging from 0.8 of a mile to 14.1 miles, wind through the park. Lake of the Ozarks State Park also features trails that accommodate mountain bikers and equestrians for those who would like to take a different approach to how they navigate the trails. A coule standout trails at Lake of the Ozarks State Park are Rocky Top Trail, which is a semi-rugged two-mile loop that features panoramic views of the Lake from atop a dolomite bluff and the Trail of Four Winds, the longest trail in the park clocking in at 14.1 miles in length. Four Winds travels through almost every type of natural community in Lake of the Ozarks State Park providing stunning views of the Lake, rock outcrops, breathtaking overlooks, seasonal streams, ponds and woodlands. Another very popular trail at Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Coakley Hollow Trail, a selfguided interpretive trail that measures a fairly easy distance of one mile. Coakley Hollow meanders through one of the most ecologically diverse
areas in the park, featuring six different types of ecosystems, including dolomite glades, fens, spring-fed streams and several types of woodlands. Interpretive stations are located along the trail, making it easy to learn about the terrain and rare species encountered along the way. Lake of the Ozarks State Park also is home to Ozark Caverns, one of Lake area’s four show caves. Informative park interpreters lead hourlong, narrated hand-held lantern tours of Ozark Caverns’ underground beauty from mid-May until mid-September. Tours of Ozark Caverns cost $6 for children, $8 for teenagers and $10 for adults. For more information on the trails and features of Lake of the Ozarks State Park, visit mostateparks.com/park/ lake-ozarks-state-park. Both state parks are free and open to the public year around. Each offers spectacular shows of color during the spring and fall, and native plant species and wildlife thrive in all seasons. Five of the 28 unique Missouri conservation areas at Lake of the Ozarks welcome hikers and feature designated walking trails, birding areas and natural areas to explore as well. The conservation areas also are free and open year around. For more details on the Lake-area conservation areas, their trailheads, and other activities and amenities available, call the Camdenton Conservation Service Center at 573-346-2210, or visit the Missouri Department of Conservation website at www. mdc.mo.gov to access an interactive atlas for detailed maps of the different areas.
