following resources that can serve as safeguards during the hot summer months. h Keeping Cool Program – Helps make summer energy bills more aff ordable for seniors, people with disabilities, the chronically ill or households with young children. It includes up to three monthly electric bill credits in the summer months to keep customers cool and safe. h The Caring Contact Program – Eligible customers may designate a person or agency for Ameren Missouri to contact prior to disconnection for nonpayment. Caring Contact helps protect the health and safety of older adults and people with disabilities who may need additional support in handling potential disconnection of service. h Medical Equipment Registry – Allows customers to register electrically operated life-sustaining medical equipment so Ameren Missouri can notify them about planned maintenance outages. Easy adjustments to increase energy effi ciency at home can save money on energy costs, reduce stress on HVAC Stay in the shade to beat the systems and help keep heat. GETTY IMAGES you and your family cool. “Simple tips like closing the curtains and adjusting your thermostat a couple degrees higher take only a few minutes and can keep your family comfortable while helping you control your energy use during the heat wave and all summer long,” said Tony Lozano, director of energy solutions at Ameren Missouri.
Ameren Missouri’s Cool-Down Tips h Stay in the shade. Use curtains and blinds to block out direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon. Keeping curtains and drapes closed can help reduce the heat indoors by 33%. h Feel the breeze. Use ceiling or other fans in addition to the air conditioner to help keep cool air circulating. Remember to set the ceiling fan’s blades to spin counterclockwise to create a cool breeze. Supplementing the air conditioner with a ceiling fan enables you to set the thermostat about 4 degrees higher without aff ecting your comfort. h Take your meal prep outside. Limit the use of ovens and stove tops for indoor cooking. Grilling outdoors can reduce excess heat produced in the kitchen from large appliances. h Clean out air conditioner fi lters. Well-maintained HVAC units are less likely to fail during months of hard use in the summer. Cleaning out ducts and changing air fi lters can keep your HVAC system running effi ciently. h Reduce hot water use. Take shorter showers and use bathroom exhaust fans to remove the heat and humidity. Make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans are vented to the outside, not the attic, to keep the warm air out. h Upgrade your thermostat. Lower your cooling costs and keep your home comfortable by upgrading to a smart thermostat. Ameren Missouri customers are currently eligible for a $0 Sensi smart thermostat, thanks to instant discounts and participation in the Peak Time Savings program. 98-year-old Benton County man shares snagging stories He’s been fi shing since 1982 Michael Losch Lake Sun | USA TODAY NETWORK
At 98 years old, Murl Stull can still teach people a thing or two. With a wealth of experience that dates back nearly a century, one of those things is snagging paddlefi sh and the Benton County man proved he still has what it takes after snagging a 50-pound spoonbill on Lake of the Ozarks this year with one day left in the annual season that runs from March 15 to April 30 in Missouri. “It was a huge relief and we were all excited that he caught one this season. It was the only one he caught this year,” said Cory Adams, Stull’s son-in-law who has been snagging with him for four years. “His nephew, Doug Stull, and I were getting worried he wouldn’t catch one this season.” Stull was born and raised in a town called Fairfi eld, which currently resides under the waters of Truman Lake. During the years of World War II, he started as a cook in Hawaii and later went to Guam before transitioning to the 4th Marine Division as an MP. He got his discharge on Christmas morning of 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. He picked up the hobby of snagging paddlefi sh in 1982 and had snagged every season with his brother, Ray Stull, through 2020 when Ray’s health prevented him from setting out this past season. Stull has also gone snagging with his nephew, Doug, for about the past 25 years and no matter how old he gets, he still refuses to use dipsy divers.
Murl Stull with a spoonbill. PROVIDED
For Stull, his favorite moment came in 2014 when he caught a spoonbill that may have weighed over 100 pounds. The scale was not working properly that day, but it is something he will never forget.
“It is the lazy way of snagging,” said the 98-year-old who has never used a cane or walker. Throughout the years, there have been a few favorite memories of catching a fi sh that can grow up to seven feet and weigh more than 100 pounds, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. For Stull, his favorite moment came in 2014 when he caught a spoonbill that may have weighed over 100 pounds. The scale was not working properly that day, but it is something he will never forget. As for Adams, one moment he will always remember is an outing three years ago when he was out with the trio of Stulls trying to catch a spoonbill. “We were not having any luck that day and he (Murl) said, ‘Let me show you how its done.’ It wasn’t 10 minutes later he caught a spoonbill,” Adams recalled. But for Adams, Stull has provided him so much more than just a few snagging memories. The son-in-law said the lessons he has learned from his father-inlaw are invaluable. “Murl has taught me a lot of lessons over the years and has been like a father to me. He taught me how to garden, how to can fruit and vegetables and just too many lessons to list,” Adams noted. “I’ve heard so many stories from when he was young to when he was in World War II and I’ve learned lessons and things about history and life through those stories.” Over the course of 98 years and through all the experiences Stull has had, there are still a few mottos he lives by. “If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right, work has never hurt anybody and always be honest,” he pointed out.

FISHING DRIFTWOOD OUTDOORS
The trifecta of Ozarks Trout Rivers Brandon Butler bbutler@driftwoodoutdoors.com
The White River below Bull Shoals Dam in Northern Arkansas is one of the premier trout fi shing waters in America. This bold statement is, in my opinion, unquestionable. Yet, the White isn’t the only river in the region worth traveling to for trout fi shing. The Norfork River and the North Fork of the White River are each special destinations in their own right. My introduction to the White River came early in life. Extended family moved from where I grew up in Northwest Indiana to Lakeview, Arkansas. Summer vacations to explore the lakes and rivers of the Ozarks followed. I caught the fi rst trout of my life from the White River while in high school, and I’ve never lost my love of the place and

the exceptional trout fi shing the river provides. As my trout fi shing exploits increased in seriousness, I began fi shing waters all across the country. Name a river in Montana, Wyoming or Colorado and I’ve likely fi shed it. Yet, I’m still drawn back to the Ozarks and the beautiful waters coursing through the region. The White River maybe the main draw, but a number of smaller rivers also deserve to be recognized, not only for their incredible fi shing opportunities, but also for the scenery they provide. The North Fork of the White and the Norfork are the same river on opposite ends of a reservoir. The North Fork of the White has its origin in Texas County, Missouri. It fl ows south for 109 miles until it turns into Norfork Reservoir. This river is certainly the most western like water in Missouri. Meaning, it has a fast, natural fl ow with riffl es and runs that remind one of being on the Madison or Yellowstone. It has a healthy population of trout, especially rainbows. But the further downstream you go, the more likely you are to tangle with a brown trout. The Norfork River is a tailwater fl owing out of the Norfork Dam. This little gem is only 4.5 miles long, but fi shes much larger. It’s home to four species of trout; brook, rainbow, cutthroat, and brown. Well, maybe fi ve now, as Tiger trout, a hyThe Norfork River brid of brown trout and brook trout, is a tailwater have now been stocked in the White flowing out of the River system. Back in 1988, the Norfork Dam. This world-record brown trout was little gem is only caught out of the Norfork. It 4.5 miles long, but weighed almost 39 pounds. Last weekend, fi ve friends and I traveled down to the White for a weekend of trout fi shing. We rented a cabin at Copper John’s Resort right on the water. It’s perfect fi sh camp for those plying the waters with fl y fi shing equipment, because there is an excellent fl y shop, called Fly’s and Guides, right onsite. Jeremy Hunt and his wife Lisa own and operate the shop, out of which they run a number of fi shing guides. If you have never fi shed the White River before, hiring a guide to give you the lay of the land is good idea. It’s a big water, so having a professional break it down for you can save you a lot of time and frustration. Two of the fellas on our trip are guides. Mike Sexton and Damon Spurgeon operate Cardiac Mountain Outfi tters. We certainly had the advantage of knowledge on our side when we launched our boats Saturday morning. The six of us caught a ton of fi sh on the White, which is one of those rare rivers that provide the opportunity for a numbers game. Meaning, you can try for a 50 or 100 fi sh days and have a realistic chance of achieving such a lofty goal. My good friend and podcast co-host, Nathan “Shags” McLeod is out for those sort of numbers every time he hits the water. You’d be foolish to bet against him. I, on the other hand, am more easily satisfi ed with a few good fi sh and the relaxation of rowing a boat down a gorgeous river. See you down the trail … For more Driftwood Outdoors, check out the podcast on www.driftwoodoutdoors.com or anywhere podcasts are streamed. ■

olf was booming during the pandemic of 2020 and the momentum has continued into the spring of 2021. Golf courses at Lake of the Ozarks have continued to see increased demand and with that some of the courses have made signifi cant investments to update their facilities. Most notably were the upgrades that Lake Valley Country Club and Eldon Country Club made this spring. Lake Valley Country Club spent the off -season renovating their grill, men’s and women’s locker rooms, restrooms, and contracted out a complete makeover of their 23 bunkers on the par-72

ing, 21st Century Electronix, Barklage Drywall, Inc., and DC Electrical Services. Mammoth Sports Construction, out of Kansas City, was hired to spearhead the renovations of the golf course. Alongside Brad Seidt, General Manager/ Golf Course Superintendent and his crew, they got to work on the complete bunker renovation. They began by removing all the old sand from the 23 bunkers. They kept 20 original bunkers in their pervious locations, fi lled in three existing bunkers and relocated three bunkers. Once the sand was removed they reshaped many of the bunkers, dug up and replaced all the drain tile, and reshaped many of the bunkers to enhance their appearance and playability. Stateof-the-art bunker linings were installed in each bunker and over 3⁄ 4 of a mile of drain tile was laid down. This will allow the bunkers to empty very quickly after any amount of rain and should be playable signifi cantly quicker than in previous years. A total of 350,000 pounds of fresh sand was replaced in the bunkers during the renovation, in addition to four semi-loads of sod to replace areas around the bunkers and over the drain tiles. The new white sand stands out when you drive into the property and it gives golfers a great visual target as they play each of the holes. Brad and Mammoth Sports did a phenomenal job and I know the members and guests that play Lake Valley this year and for years to come will be impressed.

Eldon Golf Club also spent the off -season upgrading their facilities. They started by moving their existing golf shop to the banquet room located adjacent to the pool and current golf shop. The membership did the majority of the renovations to the building. The area was segmented into the golf shop, offi ces, restrooms and their new learning center. The learning center is certainly the highlight of the remodel as the club now has two simulators, an indoor practice green, and the golf shop and offi ces all under one roof. The learning center is equipped with a Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor and a Skytrak launch monitor. An indoor putting green has also been installed where the GCQuad monitor can analyze your putting stroke. Finding a place to drop anchor and cove out at the Lake of the Ozarks on weekends can be as challenging as fi nding a vacant poolside veranda at a tropical resort. But if you can get the crew out the door before noon and you’re stealthy, there’s a place for you, your boat, your water toys and even your dogs. The best advice is to pick a general direction and explore what that particular area of the lake has to off er. There’s plenty of space out there, even for those seeking lots of solitude.

off
The Lake of the Ozarks off ers 1,100 miles of shoreline between Bagnell Dam in Lake Ozark and Truman Dam in Warsaw. So, you see, opportunity abounds. The Lake has gotten busier in the last decade and you might have to share a cove, or you might fi nd solace in tying up with a string of boats. There’s enough room for everybody. Notice, though, that some coves are restricted to no wake and a few don’t allow tie-ups or anchoring at all due to past problems associated with a party atmos-
phere. The Missouri State Water Patrol set the areas and enforces the rules. Those coves are clearly marked.
Where to go? There are any number of arms or coves scattered along the 93-miles of Lake from dam to dam. Growing in popularity — and no longer a secret to locals — is the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake which lies beyond the Grand Glaize Bridge. Because much of the shoreline is part of the Missouri State Parks there isn’t nearly as much residential or commercial development. So it’s not as busy. Starting from Bagnell Dam, there are several long coves that off er anchoring opportunities. These include: The Grand Glaize Arm stretches for several miles back into the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Be careful, though. When you get toward the end it gets shallow and there are numerous stumps. Eventually you’ll reach Public Beach 1 in the State Park. For historical purposes, you’ll pass Anderson Hollow Cove at about the 3.5-mile marker, home to what once was the bawdy but popular Party Cove. Now, it’s just a great place to cove out. If you have a Lake map, look for Watson Hollow Cove (aka Girl Scout Cove), Red Bud Hollow, Pin Oak Hollow and farther down the Glaize Arm Honey Run Hollow. Toward the other end of the lake — toward Bagnell Dam — The Gravois Arm of the Lake at about the 6-mile marker offers not only some great areas to anchor and relax, but several watering holes that double as restaurants. Ha Ha Tonka Cove between the 14-and 15-mile maker of the Niangua Arm is popular, but a long way from most waterfront hangouts on the water. It’s a nice day trip that will take you past Bridal Cave as well. It’s quieter up that way, so enjoy. Just make sure you have a full tank of gas. It primarily serves the boating population in the Camdenton area. Windermere Cove at the 7-mile marker of the Niangua can be fun as well. These areas are at the outlying points of the Lake because typically they are the less traveled. There are dozens of coves in-between that are suitable for coving out, so it’s best to take some time exploring. As you pass some of the major branches of the Lake just take a side trip or glance down the waterway — if there are boats tied up, that’s the place to go.
Our suggestions? h Get out early to ensure you have the best location possible. h Be courteous of other boaters. Enter the coves below wake speed and motor gently through the conglomeration of boats. h If you’re on a PWC, again please be courteous of others. Keep it under control until you’re a safe distance from other boaters. h Take plenty of water to stay hydrated. It can get pretty hot anchored in a cove for several hours. h Stock the cooler with plenty of snacks and cool drinks. Don’t forget the sunscreen. h Make sure you have plenty of approved lifejackets on hand for everyone on the boat. Even the pets! h Be sure to shut the engine down before allowing anyone off the boat. n

No signs of slowing for boating Start now if you plan to purchase in 2022 Special to Vacation News USA TODAY NETWORK
Marine dealers may be on track for another record-setting year for boat sales. After experiencing a high demand for new and pre-owned boats in 2020 as people took to the water for recreation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the market continues to show signs of growth. Lake of the Ozarks is considered a hub for the marine industry in Missouri, rivaling other areas of the state and nation for boat and personal watercraft sales. Late last week, the Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association announced the annual fall boat show was being postponed. The September Boat Show has always been billed as an “end of current model year” clearance show. As 2021 saw many local boat dealers across the nation with record sales numbers for
2021, the LOMDA board of directors made the decision to cancel out of concern for the shortage of current model year product for their boating customers and the many show attendees, and that as a result, that the association could not promote a full show as attendees were used to seeing in years past. The trend in recreational boating is showing no signs of slowing down. According to a statement provided by LOMDA, all of the local dealer members have reacted and have been very aggressive with their purchases of product to ensure an abundance of watercraft for the upcoming 2022 boating season. These dealers are, however, highly encouraging potential shoppers that are wanting to get a new boat for 2022, to have that dialogue with your dealer now to ensure spring delivery in 2022. LOMDA will be featuring the new 2021 product lines at the association’s 2022 Overland Park Boat Show that runs from Jan. 27 thru Jan. 30, 2022 and at the St. Charles Boat Show Mar. 3 thru Mar. 6, 2022. Products for 2022 will be
delivered and on exhibit. Mike Kenagy, the Marine Dealers Association’s Executive Director said, “with the infl ux of new Lake of the Ozarks homeowners moving into our area, the demand for watercraft has been high. Our local marine dealers have done an excellent job in getting those new residents the boats they need so that they can enjoy the water in their new home here at the lake”. Mark Maasen, president of the Marine Dealers Association said with the boat manufactures coming back online after an unprecedented year in 2021, “we see the opportunity for product at the lake to increase like we have never seen before for 2022 and on.” The Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association is made up of over 40 lake area marine dealers, representing all the top lines of boats, marine accessories, docks, personal watercraft and everything else to promote fun on our local waters. After responding to a rash of boat fi res already this season, lake area fi re offi cials are reminding boaters to make sure they know what they are doing when they pull up to a gas dock. An afternoon of summer fun can quickly turn into a dangerous situation when proper fueling procedures aren’t followed. Learning how to properly fuel a boat is one of the fi rst and most important lessons boat operators need to know. Mid-County Fire Chief Scott Frandsen said boat fi res are not only dangerous for boaters onboard but also those on the docks and nearby boats. A boat fi re/explosion that gets out-of-control can spread quickly. Experts The Lake of the Ozarks Captain’s Association’s recommends boaters provide tips run blowers for at least 5 minutes to on boat get rid of any fuel fumes trapped in the bilge/engine compartment. Keep safety after the engine hatch open while running several boat the blower. Do a sniff test for any fuel odor. explosions “Something to consider … it is not a bad practice to run your blower each occur on time before you start your engine,” Lake of the said Capt. Doug Beck, of LOCA and the Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Ozarks Council. “On a hot summer day, the fuel fumes/vapors can build in the bilge/engine compartment. So before leaving the dock, take a few extra minutes that could save you a lifetime of regret.” LOCA Capt. Bob May said personal watercraft operators also need to take precautions by ventilating the engine compartment and doing a sniff test. May said boaters may want to look at upgrades that can improve safety. “New gas fume sensors are making their way into the manufacturers’ newer boats but there are aftermarket units that can be installed,” he said. “If they sense fumes, a light and buzzer on the dashboard signals to the operator there is a problem. Another device takes that electronic fume detector one step further. If gas fumes are detected, this unit disables the starter motor(s) and prevents the operator from starting the boat.” Even with those types of devices, May said boaters still need to follow fueling safety guidelines. Here’s what the experts recommend: 1. Make sure the engines are off when fueling.
2. Do not smoke anywhere around fueling. 3. Do not use your cell phone while refueling. 4. If you have a metal boat or a boat with metal, touch the boat well away from the fuel fi ll to discharge any static electricity. Also, keep the nozzle in contact with the fuel fi ll to avoid a static electric discharge 5. Close all windows, hatches and vents to prevent fuel fumes from entering the boat. 6. If the motors are inboard, be sure you run your blowers for fi ve minutes after fueling (or whatever is recommended by your boat’s manufacturer). 7. Prior to taking the boat out from your dock run the blowers. Also check the bilge area to make sure that there is no fuel present. If you smell gasoline or see gasoline in your bilge do not start the boat and call a service technician. The best gas leak detector is your nose! If you smell gasoline do not start the boat. 8. On larger boats make certain that you are putting the fuel in the fuel tank. We have had instances where the operator put fuel in the wastewater or freshwater tanks. Again if this happens do not start the boat and call a service technician. On most boats the fuel, wastewater and fresh water fi ll ports look very similar
9. While fueling, during startup and during operation always wear a PFD. In an emergency such as a boat explosion you will not have time to locate one and you will have to abandon the boat. 10. Make sure that no one is on the boat when fueling. 11. If you are using any form of portable fuel can, always fi ll them on shore way from the boat. 12. Always stay at the nozzle when fueling. Do not rely on the auto shutoff .
Boating checklist Engine Electrical : Wiring harnesses and starters cause a disproportionate number of fi res on boats more than 25 years old. If you have a vintage boat and those parts are original, consider replacing them. Most of these older boats had relatively simple wiring harnesses, so if the manufacturer is no longer in business, or the part is no longer available, a good electrical technician can put one together for you. Other DC Electrical: While loose battery connections, chafed battery cables, and aged battery switches can all cause fi res aboard, the most common cause of battery-related fi res is operator error: reversing the battery cables or connecting them in series when they should have been in parallel, or vice versa. If you're
disconnecting your batteries for any reason, photograph the confi guration with your phone fi rst, label the battery cables, and mark the positive lug with red fi ngernail polish to make sure you avoid a shocking experience when you reconnect them. AC Electrical: Bringing air conditioning, microwaves, electric heaters, and other AC appliances aboard makes life on the dock more comfortable and convenient but also greatly increases the risk of fi re. Most AC electrical fi res start somewhere between the marina pedestal and the shorepower inlet on the boat. Other Engine: Any interruption of cooling water can lead to overheating and then to a fi re. In this case, a blockage of the raw-water intake caused the overheating. Other exhaust fi res are caused by impeller failures due to age or to sediment in the water. If your engine overheats, check the engine compartment before getting underway again. Change your impeller every other year, and after a grounding, or operating in particularly dirty waters. Batteries: On older outboards, the voltage regulator is by far the most common cause of fi res. The failure rate increases with age after 10 years, so if your outboard is 15 years old or more, replacing the regulator may well keep you from having a bad day on the water. n

A Smokin’ Jones employee prepares take-out from behind the counter.
Diners lining up to be served at new restaurant Story by Connye Griffin | Photography by Al Griffin
Two years ago Mike Jones opened Jones Outpost in Montreal where diners count on tasty, crisp fried chicken, lobster, “katfi sh,” and onion rings served hot and fresh. Helping Jones deliver good food is a staff of good people — so many that Jones needed more space and places for them all. They earned his faith in them, and he favored them with another restaurant, Smokin’ Jones on Business 5 in Camdenton, north of the courthouse. 38 | JULY 9 - 22, 2021 | VACATION NEWS

Brisket is the big seller, but turkey and pulled pork are close seconds.
Opened in September 2020 as a pandemic rolled across the land, Jones took another leap of faith, and that leap has paid off . One local fan of Smokin’ Jones says the barbecue is righteous — just another way of saying it’s genuine and excellent. Jones says the reason is as simple as the barbecue process, beginning with quality meat smoked slowly using local Ozark hickory and ending in portions guaranteed to satisfy. Smokin’ Jones often sells out before the close of business, especially on Friday and Saturday nights even though the daily roast consists of 20 briskets, 40 slabs of ribs, 16 pork butts, three hams, and eight turkeys. Brisket is the big seller, but turkey and pulled pork are close seconds. Another popular menu item is a specialty known as the Hillbilly Bowl, made with smoked brisket and bacon, pepper jack cheese, fried potatoes, onions, peppers, and Alabama white or house sauce drizzled on top. It’s a platter in a bowl. Another specialty is a dessert known as Memphis Mafi a Pie, named in honor of Elvis’s mafi a — his entourage of friends and cousins. Everyone in Elvis’s

squad knew he loved a chocolate-peanut butter-bacon-banana sandwich better than any other so the Memphis Mafi a Pie has each of those fl avors baked right in. At Smokin’ Jones, however, dessert choices change daily so diners may want to inquire or check Facebook announcements to see if that Memphis marvel is on the menu. Portions are generous at Smokin’ Jones, and that includes 12 diff erent sides. One of them is unique to Smokin’ Jones: it’s cheesy corn, tasting exactly as its name suggests. In addition, barbecue fans can count on a creamy mayonnaise coleslaw, beans rich and thick

with brisket meat, potato salad, garlic butter baby reds, sweet pickles, and white beans with ham. Mike Jones enjoys working, loves cooking, and likes meeting the challenge of owning and cooking for two different restaurants. He also values hardworking, loyal people so much that he opened Smokin’ Jones to give them another place to work. They share his mission: serve good barbecue in the fi ne tradition of Missouri, one of the top 10 states for barbecue in the United States. Camdenton is now one fi ne destination for righteous Missouri barbecue, prepared the Mike Jones way. m

fter my visit to a lavender farm, I was very excited to try my hand at planting my own lavender garden. I hand tilled a very small area of soil, added mulch mixed with sand and dirt, and prepared my starter pots of lavender. I had only purchased four 6” starter pots. Within a couple of months they were spreading quite nicely. You would have never have guessed Missouri off ers at least 10 lavender farms (one in the Lake area) with new farms cropping up unexpectedly. Many of the lavender farms sell products and their lavender at local farmer’s markets as well as off er a selection of lavender in their own shops and online. Some have restaurants or cafés, and host festivals and events. Visiting a lavender farm is a delightful way to celebrate summer and most certainly should go on the calendar for your annual outing. Check online as season hours for each venue change.

Ozark Wylde Farm is located in the Lake area, just outside of Stover. Depending on the time of year, the farm has a variety of lavender products in the owner’s “She-Shed” ranging from skin care products to lavender-infused maple syrup and their best-selling teas. PROVIDED
OZARK WYLDE FARM Location & Info: Stover (Ozark Wylde Farm on Facebook) Ozark Wylde Farm is a new lavender and botanical farm in the Lake area. Opening an herb-based farm and business on her family’s cattle farm has been a long-held dream for proprietor Amy Wilson. “I’ve thought about opening up some kind of farm store for a long time and have sort of pitched diff erent ideas to my dad over time. Our farm is close to the highway (Hwy. 135 South) so it’s fairly accessible to the public,” says Amy. “Then I really got into gardening and fresh vegetables and herbs for health after a severe, but relatively brief, fl are-up of my guttate psoriasis back in 2011/ 2012. Before and after the fl are-up, I had ongoing minor issues with it. I was frustrated with the treatments, and started researching on my own and realized prevention really is worth an ounce of cure.” “As a farm kid, I grew up gardening, but I became more interested in wellness and living a healthier lifestyle. To my dermatologist’s credit, she also led me to be more wary of chemical fragrances in skin care products, recommending fragrance-free lotions. But I

like a nice scent as much as the next girl. It just all eventually evolved into wanting to do something with herbs, and lavender is in many ways the queen of aromatics. It’s so multi-functional and safe to use in both personal care products, and in food and beverages. It’s also an easier commercial crop to grow and sell

because of the plant’s toughness and its usefulness when dried. You don’t have to sell it fresh so your product is less perishable,” Amy explained. Lavender aromatherapy can ease anxiety and stress, which is believed to be linked to a number of related health benefi ts from improved mental cognition in college students to less agitation and improved mood for those suff ering from dementia as well as headache and pain relief. Lavender oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties making it good for burns and wound-healing, and generally good for skin. It is also a natural bug repellent. Culinary lavender can add a clean sweetness to both sweet and savory dishes. In addition to healthy antioxidants, it is believed lavender’s ursolic acid (also found in apples and some other herbs) may have health benefi ts from inhibiting cancer to helping the body burn more calories. Lavender’s anti-infl ammatory compounds also help combat colitis. The dream to actually start a lavender farm really started to take shape in January 2020 when Amy made a leap of faith and ordered 2,000 lavender plants from a farm in Arizona. Little did she know then that she would end up opening a business in the midst of a pandemic. The state of Missouri was just barely out of lockdown when Amy and her dad made the cross-country trip with masks, a cooler of food and lots of hand sanitizer to pick up the plants which include two varieties of English Lavender — Buena Vista and Royal Velvet — and two varieties of Dutch or French Hybrid Lavender — Grosso and Provence. Agriculture waits for no man. The farm was a largely self-contained whirlwind of activity through most of 2020 from planting and watering to harvesting and pruning in order to make the farm’s fi rst products by fall, opening the shop in December. There’s still more to do and more dreams of expansion down the road, but Ozark Wylde items are available at the store/drying barn on the farm south of Stover. Dozens of personal care products from lavender pillows to face scrub are for sale. Culinary items include lavender-infused maple syrup (which come from trees on the farm), chocolate truffl es, biscotti, spices and beverages.

The lavender fi eld at Long Row Farm. PROVIDED
In Missouri, lavender typically blooms early to mid June and is harvested by early July. The barn’s airy loft, designed to dry the harvested stems, provides the perfect backdrop for photos in late summer. Their gambrel style post and beam barn also houses a gift shop providing an aff ordable, upscale blend of home decor, items from local artists and handmade Long Row Lavender products. From lavender bug spray to best-selling body butter, a great line of items for men, and gift box sets, there are dozens of items for sale. Tea, honey, lemon-lavender bread mix, brownie mix and culinary lavender make for fun items to take home and share when you have company. A rural Missouri setting provides the perfect backdrop for events. Located
next to the cafe and gift shop, a private venue space is available to book for small gatherings. It is evident by the interactions with staff , that their goal is to bless the community through the farm and bring each guest an uplifting experience. The farm is open from March 13-December 11 with seasonal hours Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A good day to visit is June 5 when the 3rd annual Spring Maker’s Market features local artists, makers and food vendors.

52 | JULY 9 - 22, 2021 | VACATION NEWS
Also known as The Accidental Ozark-
ian, this is a relatively new family run farm. The family began to plant and use lavender oil personally for ailments as well as for its calming and relaxing abilities. Logan Swank is the proprietor and keeper of the lavender, along with his wife, April. They moved from Illinois to Missouri and began their lavender planting. Swank planted Lavandula X intermedia, a hybrid plant from Pennsylvania. They say it’s humidity resistant and handles the Missouri summers well. Lavender hates moisture. They are trying to grow more English lavender, which is not quite as winter hardy. In the month of June they host a “You Pick” on the farm. Guests may cut their own lavender and are charged according to their bundle size. m
