F
rom the secluded, wooded canopy of the front nine to the breathtaking lake vistas along the back, Lake Nona’s 18-hole championship golf course embodies the purity of the world’s greatest game. Designed by premier golf architect, Tom Fazio, the challenging course is favored by countless professional golfers and world-class athletes who call Lake Nona home. “When you stand on the first tee of Lake Nona, you literally see it, you get it. By the time you get done with the front nine, you say, ‘Wow, this is a very special place,” explains Fazio. Designed in 1986, the course is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, meandering through natural pine forests, oak groves and along Buck Lake, Red Lake and Lake Nona. The five sets of tees offer a challenge to all levels of players, stretching from 5,460 yards for ladies to over 7,215 yards from the championship tees.
John Sunley, is a short set of tees perfectly suited for those learning the game. This regulation 18-hole, par-72 course has been rated by the USGA, enabling juniors to establish their first official handicap. The par threes range in yardage from 83 to 120 yards, par fours from 140 to 190 yards and par fives from 240 to 275 yards, totaling 3,050 yards overall. Lake Nona’s reputation for quality has been recognized globally via the Country Club’s hosting of several international golf tournaments. The 1993 World Cup Golf, Inaugural Solheim Cup, USGA National Team Championships and PGA TOURsanctioned Tavistock Cup, along with various other prestigious amateur and professional events, have crowned champions at Lake Nona. As a four-time PGA TOUR winner, recent FedExCup champion, and third in the official world golf ranking, calling it a “good year” is an understatement. With continued greatness on the horizon, Stenson recently reflected on his dream season and shared a glimpse inside his personal life, from his sporting role models to his role as a father when at home within Lake Nona’s gates.

: It’s been a great year for you. What’s your favorite golfing memory of 2013? : Well, it’s really hard for me to pick one memory from 2013. Winning in Atlanta was special. I was one of five guys who, if they won, controlled their own destiny. But, winning in Dubai, in front of so many friends and family, was special too. I think we had close to 15 people there after the round, and we took so many pictures on the 18th green following the tournament. Being able to share that with my family was great. I will remember this season for a long, long time.

: What does it feel like to have won both the FedExCup and the Race to Dubai in the same year? : It was the chance of a lifetime to win both the FedExCup and the Race to Dubai in the same year. To come out on top in Dubai, especially after all the problems I was having with my wrist, was fantastic. I’m really happy I was able to take the opportunity I was given and walk away with the wins. I mean, winning just one would have been great, but I’m fortunate to have won both.

: With all these wins, where do you store all this new hardware?
Q
: Well, I like to split it up a bit between Lake Nona and Sweden. I usually keep all my European Tour trophies in Europe and my PGA TOUR trophies in the US. Both the FedExCup and the TOUR Championship trophies are at my home in Lake Nona, along with my PLAYERS Championship trophy from TPC. I’m still waiting for the Deutsche Bank trophy to arrive. In Sweden, I have the Race to Dubai trophy. It’s nice to have pieces on both sides of the Atlantic.
: You’re clearly on a strong winning streak these days. Do you have any pre-tournament rituals or superstitions?
A
: Not really. I guess you would call them habits more than superstitions. I play Round 1 with a Titleist number 1 golf ball, Round 2 with a Titleist number 2 golf ball and Round 3 with a Titleist number 3 golf ball. A Titleist number 4 golf ball usually gets thrown into my bag for the practice round and I start the Final Round each week with either a Titleist number 1, 2 or 3 golf ball

: Looking back even further, what’s your favorite Ryder Cup memory? : Being a part of the 2006 European Ryder Cup Team was a great time! Winning on home soil at the K Club in Ireland, and by such a large margin, created an unbelievable first experience for me.

: For a lot of golfers, location is everything. What’s your favorite course to play and why?
Q
: TPC-Sawgrass. I just love it there! Plus, I think it’s part of the reason that I play so well there. I like a course that’s clean cut where you can see the challenges that lie ahead of you, where the risk and the reward are right in front of you. I like a course that’s fair and square.
: Do you feel you’re at the top of your game? What do you do to stay focused and set goals for the upcoming season?
A
: I’ve started the 2014 season the same way as 2013, which is very average at best. The hardest for me is to balance home time with rest and practice. I’m five times busier off the course than I have ever been before, so managing my time becomes very important. Plus, for me, it’s just hard to say “no.” On the course, I just try to become a better player; the key areas I focus on are my putting and wedge game. But, at the same time, I don’t want to sacrifice the other parts of my game.

: When you’re not practicing or playing, what hobbies do you enjoy doing with your family? : I like activities that the whole family can do together. My old caddie, Fanny Sunesson, got us hooked on pinball machines. We have an Avatar one back in Sweden and had to buy a Spiderman one for our home in the US. We also enjoy skiing, and as the kids get older, I know it’ll be something that we will enjoy as a family. Like golf, skiing is an activity that generations can do together.
: Outside of golf, what sports do you like to follow?
A

: I would say that I’m a general sports fan. I like to keep up with everything, especially all the big events in sports. As a kid, I remember going to watch IFK Gothenburg soccer games with my dad. I’m not a die-hard fan of any particular sport or team, I enjoy watching it all – from the Olympics, Wimbledon and the FIFA World Cup, to track and field and Swedish ice hockey games.
: Congratulations on recently receiving Sweden’s Male Athlete of the Year award. How does it feel to receive such a high honor from your homeland?
A
: It was a huge honor for me, and for the game of golf. Back home, golf is fighting an uphill battle against sports like ice hockey and football (soccer). In Sweden, golf is not shown on public television; it’s something you have to subscribe to. Plus, it’s always nice to get appreciation, especially back home.
: Being from Sweden, what Winter Olympic sport do you wish you could compete in? : Well, I like to drive my car pretty fast, so I think if I had to pick an Olympic sport, I would choose Alpine skiing. Competing in the super-G or the downhill races would be good fun although, not without risk. I like to go fast!
: As a young athlete, who did you look up to and why?
A
: I didn’t start playing golf until I was a bit older. I was 11. My golfing heroes at the time were Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros. I remember watching both of them in the British Open and during the Ryder Cup. They were the best players in the world and that is who I looked up to. Outside of golf, I would say that I look up to Ingemar Stenmark, former Swedish skier, who was active during the 1970s and 1980s. He is regarded as the greatest slalom specialist of all time.

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (DPAC), downtown Orlando’s newest cultural attraction, is set for completion later this year, bringing a variety of theater, music and arts to our backyard. DPAC President Kathy Ramsberger shared her excitement for what’s to come with this grand introduction, from upcoming programming and development, to the center’s projected community impact.

: We know there are big plans for DPAC and its two phases of construction. What exactly does Phase 1 include? : Phase I includes the 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theater and the 300-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh community theater, Grand Lobby and staircase, outdoor CNL Arts Plaza, an arts education space, and rental and community spaces.
: And after that – what is planned for Phase 2? How long until that vision is a reality?

: Phase 2 includes the construction of the 1,700-seat Acoustic Theater; extension of the lobby and the back of the house, including a large rehearsal hall; and construction of kitchen facilities. Our board and team are working diligently to complete our capital campaign to get this started. The goal is to raise the funds and begin construction by March 2015. Once we break ground, it’ll take approximately three years to complete.
: Undoubtedly, running and operating a world-class performing arts center requires the knowledge of industry experts. Who have you brought on board over the past few years to help shape Orlando into a performing arts destination?
A
: This project has attracted some of the industry’s best talent from the local market and throughout the nation. We sought professionals with impressive track records, direct industry experience, the ability to meet the demands of such an intricate project, and most importantly, those who embrace our mission. They have worked with other performing arts centers and corporations across the nation, and bring vast, relevant experience to their roles. We have also developed a Vice President of Technology position, which is unique to performing arts centers, but also a role we consider important to building the best center. Our leadership team includes: Cecilia Kelly, VP of Finance, formerly with Hard Rock; Ellery Brown, VP of Operations, formerly with the Segerstrom Center in California; Cyndi Putnam, VP of Marketing and Communications, formerly with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft Lauderdale; Leah Shepherd, VP of Development, a 20-year sponsorships and corporate partner relations executive, and Bruno Sousa, VP of Technology, a 20-year IT executive.
: What is DPAC’s vision for contributing to our unique community? : In supporting our mission to deliver Arts for Every Life, our goal is to reach and enrich our community with events and activities that appeal to all walks of life. Community open houses, meet-ups, performance spaces for community performing arts groups, placemaking activities and free events and shows will all be available for the community to enjoy.
: Seeing a multi-decade vision come to reality is thrilling, to say the least. What part of this project do you hold closest to your heart?
