Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

On behalf of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce and our more than 800+ active business members, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Lake Norman region. This past year presented a tremendous challenge to our nation and region as we dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Our business community responded to those challenges with determination, resilience, and innovation and we have emerged stronger as a community. Those dark days behind us, the sun is again shining brightly as we embrace our new opportunities. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful Lake Norman, our lake towns offer the perfect opportunity for both visitors and newcomers to enjoy the lake living lifestyle of Cornelius and Mooresville, the smalltown college charm of Davidson, and the vitality of Huntersville with its abundant shopping and recreational facilities. Lake Norman, located just outside of Charlotte, provides visitors and newcomers with a window to the past and an eye to the future. The lake is home to the land where the Catawba Indians once walked, and the early European settlers made their stand. Today, it is home to vibrant business parks and retail centers. New neighborhoods have emerged, and families have relocated to

the region, making Lake Norman one of the fastest growing regions in the country. We encourage you to use this important resource with our buyer’s guide (beginning on page 54) to Shop the Lake and enjoy our diverse array of retailers, shopping centers and restaurants.Treat yourself to the Charlotte region’s premier parks or take in one of our historical sites. We hope Great Lake Living gives you a glimpse into why so many new families are making Lake Norman their home. History

The Imagination Station A timeline of the creation of Lake Norman COMPILED BY RENEE ROBERSON

THE MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, NAMED FOR DUKE POWER PRESIDENT FROM 1959-1971 W.B. MCGUIRE, BEGAN OPERATING IN 1981.

Early 1900s

James B. Duke and Dr. W. Gil Wylie began brainstorming how a series of damns on the Catawba River could provide hydroelectricity to residents of the South.

Sept. 28, 1959

Duke Power (now Duke Energy) breaks ground on the Cowans Ford Dam.

1963

Lake Norman remains a peaceful respite for an extraordinary community of people.

Other notable facts: The Long Island Mill, one of the earliest cotton mills in the American South, opened in the mid-1800s, and closed in 1959 before being covered by Lake Norman.

Bill Lee, the grandson of William S. Lee and the chairman of Duke Power Company, led the completion of the dam, which was completed at a length of 7,387 feet. The communities of two river crossings, Sherrill’s Ford and Beatty’s Ford are flooded, along with many original homesites, in order to complete the man-made Lake Norman.

Underneath the lake are the remains of a summer camp that opened in 1938 and the site of the Battle of Cowan’s Ford, where General William Lee Davidson fought Lord Cornwallis in 1781. There are also old plantations, homesites and highways and an airplane discovered by firefighters using sonar in 2013.

1964

Sources:

Duke Power offers more than 2,600 cottage sites with leases starting at $120 a year.

1990s

Charlotte’s thriving business environment attracts more and more residents to the shores of Lake Norman when they realize they can live in a lakeside retreat with only a 30 to 40-minute commute into the city.

Water Safety

Making Waves Living on a lake can be fun, but it’s important to know the rules to keep yourself and other passengers safe while out on the water.

Personal Watercraft Law

The N.C. General Assembly enacted a personal watercraft law that took effect Dec. 1, 1999. On June 30th, 2000 this law was amended. Below is a summary of the law:

Who Can Operate a PWC?

• Anyone 14 years old but younger than 26 can operate a PWC if: • they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course (proof of age and safety course completion must be carried during operation)
 • they are riding with a person who is at least 18 and is in compliance with the Boating Education Requirement Law (G.S. 75A-16.2) •It is unlawful for the owner of a PWC to knowingly allow a person younger than 16 to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course. •It is unlawful for anyone who has temporary or permanent responsibility for a person younger than 16 to knowingly allow that person to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course.

PWC Operation

• No one can operate a PWC on state waters between sunset and sunrise. • All PWC riders, passengers and those being towed must wear approved personal flotation devices. • If the PWC is equipped with a lanyard-type engine cut off switch, the lanyard must be worn by the operator at all times. • A PWC must have a rearview mirror or an observer on board besides the operator to legally tow someone on skis or similar device. • PWCs must be operated at all times in a reasonable and prudent manner. Maneuvers that endanger people or property constitute reckless operation. • No person shall operate a personal watercraft on the waters of this State at greater than no-wake speed within

14

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

An overview of personal safety watercraft laws 100 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated propelled vessel, unless the personal watercraft is operating in a narrow channel (see below). • No person shall operate a personal watercraft in a narrow channel (see below) at greater than no-wake speed within 50 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated propelled vessel. • No person shall operate a PWC towing another person on water skis or similar device unless the total number of persons operating, observing, and being towed does not exceed the number of passengers identified by the manufacturer as the maximum safe load for the vessel. Reckless Operation Includes: •Unreasonable or unnecessary weaving through congested boat traffic. •Jumping the wake of a vessel within 100 feet of the vessel or when visibility is obstructed. •Intentionally approaching a vessel in order to swerve at the last moment. •Operating contrary to the “rules of the road”. •Following too closely (see below) to another vessel, including another personal watercraft. Renting PWCs •No one shall rent a PWC to someone under 16 unless that person meets the conditions in the section “Who Can Operate a PWC?” •A minimum of $300,000 insurance must be carried on each PWC that is rented to the public. Narrow Channel •A “narrow channel” means a segment of the waters of the State 300 feet or less in width. Following too Closely The term “following too closely” means proceeding in the same direction and operating at a speed in excess of 10 miles per hour when approaching within 100 feet to the rear or 50 feet to the side of another vessel that is underway unless that vessel is operating in a narrow channel, in which case a personal watercraft may operate at the speed and flow of other vessel traffic. PATRICK JOSEPH DISTINCTIVE HOMES DESIGNED THIS HOME THAT EXEMPLIFIES OUTDOOR LIVING AT THE LAKE.

A Place at the Lake The housing market in the area remains strong BY RENEE ROBERSON In recent years, more and more people have made the decision to embrace the Lake Norman area as their permanent home. Whether they choose to reside here due to job relocations, grandparents moving to be closer to their grandchildren or vice versa, or just the opportunity to dwell in a place you can play as much as work, the real estate market has seen a healthy boost. Abigail Jennings, president of Lake Norman Realty, says the number one request from prospective clients is close proximity to good schools, followed by easy access to shopping, restaurants and entertainment. “People love the seasons, the lake, proximity to Charlotte and the airports,” she adds.

18

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

The effect of staying at home Jennings believes COVID-19 led many people to begin prioritizing more things they could do closer to home, starting with their current residences. This led to influx of interest in local real estate. Some of the common items on buyers’ wishlists include access to greenways, parks, boat clubs, places to attend outdoor concerts and events, etc. “People want to know about craft beer venues and things like that,” she ways. In Davidson, people are also looking for walkability and where farmers markets are located. Jennings says that currently, in the Lake Norman area, all price points are in demand, from the highest luxury price points to A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

lower price points. The pandemic also made people reconsider the layout of their homes and yards. While the open concept was in demand for a great many years, with more people working and schooling from home, buyers began requesting homes with more areas for workspaces and home offices. Features like swimming pools and outdoor spaces for living and entertaining also took front and center on buyer requests. “People want to find space to spread out,” says Jennings. “Communities can stand alone, and you don’t have to work in Charlotte. There’s more national interest in our area.”

Retire at the lake There are a lot of wonderful 55+ communities in the area, and Lake Norman Realty has specialists that focus on that age demographic for clients. Some of the more popular communities include Trilogy® Lake Norman, Bailey’s Glen, and some of the area Epcon communities like The Courtyards of Huntersville. No matter what you’re in the market for, this area remains a great place to invest with its competitive market, especially with the current interest rates. Jennings predicts the trend will continue as long as there is demand and buyers that are hungry in every single price range. “Our prices have appreciated but they are still relatively low from other parts of the country,” she says. In other industry news, Jennings and Jane Getsinger, owners of Lake Norman Realty along with Linda Hecht and Nicole Hecht Howard, owners of Hecht Realty recently announced the news of their companies joining together under the Lake Norman Realty name, with merged operations taking effect July 1, 2021. This historic alliance joins the two oldest Lake Norman real estate companies, representing a homecoming of sorts for both. The visionary leaders of each entity began their real estate roots in the early 1970s under the mentorship of John Hecht in Denver, N.C. James Jennings went on to found Lake Norman Realty in 1978, while Bob Hecht took the reins at Hecht Realty. In 1998, Jennings’ daughter Abigail stepped up to lead Lake Norman Realty while Hecht’s daughter Nicole did the same for her company following Bob’s passing in 2019. 2021-2022

A look at educational options around the lake BY EMILY THOMAS WITH ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY RENEE ROBERSON

Every child is different, therefore education should be tailored around the various learning styles and philsophies whenever possible. Award-winning public and private schools provide considerable and diverse choices here, as families can select from schools that emphasize the arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), as well as Montessori and faith-based-curriculums. NASCAR

For the Fans Joe Gibbs Racing Team BY SARAH QUINN

The Charlotte area is often dubbed to be the birthplace of NASCAR. Even Mooresville has gained the name “Race City USA.” And these nicknames aren’t for nothing. Charlotte Motor Speedway is right in Concord and once held NASCAR’s first official race in 1949. And not too far from there is the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte. Just a little north in Mooresville is Dale Earnhardt Inc. The area is surrounded by famous NASCAR attractions, but there is one more name to add to the list, and that is the Joe Gibbs Racing Team facility right in Huntersville. Joe Gibbs Racing Team is owned by the renowned Joe Gibbs, whom, in his earlier career, was the head coach of the Washington Redskins. In his time as an NFL coach, he has accumulated 3 NFL Super Bowl Championships and is featured in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After his successful career in football, he brought his leadership skills to the world of racing. In 1991 he started the Joe Gibbs Racing Team, working alongside his son J.D. Gibbs, who served as president of the company, until J.D.’s death in 2019. The team represents very notable NASCAR drivers such as, Denny Hamlin, who won the Daytona 500 in 2016, 2019, and 2020. They also represent Kyle Busch, a NASCAR Cup Series champion in both 2015 and 2019, as well as Martin Truex Jr., 2016

Southern 500 winner, and Christopher Bell, the 2027 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. Alongside drivers, Daniel Hemric, Brandon Jones, Harrison Burton, and Ty Gibbs. Overall, the team has won 5 NASCAR Cup Series Championships, landing Joe Gibbs in the NASCAR hall of fame in 2020. The successful team’s facility features their collection of trophies, memorabilia, a car showroom, a gift shop, and an overview of their race shop. And although the facility is temporarily closed to visitors, due to COVID-19, you can keep up with their Facebook page or website for updates on when they will reopen. But in the meantime, www.shopjgr.com features an online team store. There you can find many collectibles such as sheet metal, diecast cars, replica helmets, windshields, and autographed items. They even have merchandise from some of your favorite drivers like hats, t-shirts, and accessories. So, start your engines, and check out Joe Gibbs Racing in Huntersville.

Business

An International Gateway

The Lake Norman area attracts businesses on a global scale COMPILED FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Lake Norman area is primed for new business development, with much of the recent growth planned for Huntersville. There is currently 4.1 million square feet of speculative space in planning, review or under construction. Below are a few speculative development projects of note: • NorthCross Commerce Center has two buildings under construction, with the largest being 331,000 square feet and the other being 114,000. Two more buildings are planned for this site as well. • Bryton Commerce Center has completed three buildings totaling 350,000 square feet with plans for Phase 2, which will include three more. • Selwyn Property Group is planning a speculative building off Alexandriana Road that will be just over 100,000 square feet. • Scannell Properties is planning two buildings in The Park Huntersville that will total 231,000 square feet. • Johnson Development has also started clearing

for a Class-A industrial speculative building located in The Park Huntersville, which will total around 150,000 square feet. Pester Pac Automation, which develops cuttingedge machine concepts from film wrapping and case packing through to palletizing, officially opened a facility in The Park Huntersville. The 23,000-squarefoot space includes a 5.3 million investment and is expected to bring 20 jobs to the area. This activity comes after years of work by Ryan McDaniels, head of Lake Norman Economic Development (LNED) and other local leaders to attempt to spur development. McDaniels’ focus now shifts from eagerly pursuing development to finding tenants to occupy the high volume of space that is coming to Huntersville. His team at LNED has done so by adding more virtual tours of sites, he says. “It is exciting for us because I know we’ve missed deals because we just simply haven’t had the right product, and now we’re going to have that option.” North Mecklenburg is in a competitive position for international projects due to being located just 20

The airport is an international gateway with numerous non-stop services to 175 cities including London, Frankfurt, and Munich. The facility, which is capable of 200,000 lifts annually, transfers containers between trucks and trains, and connects to the intermodal facilities at the Port of Charleston. With many manufacturers building new facilities in the North Mecklenburg market, there have also been recent expansions. Some of those include Forbo Movement Systems, Reynolds Consumer Products and Saertex Multicom. The following companies continue to be Lake Norman’s biggest employers, a list which has remained relatively unchanged over the past few years. Ingersoll Rand continues to lead the way with 1,600 employees on its Davidson campus, followed by Davidson College with 750 and MSC (350). McGuire Nuclear Station tops the list for Huntersville at 1,200 employees, followed by Novant Health (690), Metrolina Greenhouses (650), Joe Gibbs Racing (650) and Rubbermaid (400).

Eats

Delectable Dining

Whatever your mood, there’s something for every palate

BY RENEE ROBERSON

One thing people in the Lake Norman area love to talk about is the food scene, because there is such a great variety here. Whether you are looking for fine dining, healthy fare, or international cuisine you can eat on an outdoor patio overlooking a charming downtown or lake view, you’ll never get bored of our food options. Just a few years ago, Southern Living ranked the town of Davidson as 10th on The South’s Best Food Towns List 2019. Kindred, located on Main Street, is owned and operated by Joe and Katy Kindred and is a hot spot for celebrity visitors to the area (Reese Witherspoon visited for lunch a few years ago while on a book tour). Their famous milk bread has inspired a new restaurant concept with the same name slated to open just up the street later this year. Milkbread, billed as an “all-day café,” will serve milk bread doughnuts, crispy chicken, vegetable-focused bowls, salads and a variety of beverages. The Kindreds also own the lakeside upscale fish camp Hello Sailor! in Cornelius. But the Kindreds aren’t the only game in town, as diners can also find the cuisine of many cultures. Menus featuring Mexican, Latin American, Caribbean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Greek, Irish and Indian food join all manner of American food. Places like Barrel and Fork in Cornelius receive rave reviews for their savory brunch menu and hand-crafted cocktails, while just up the street you can nosh on mouthwatering tacos and nachos at the southern-inspired Osito’s Tacos & Tortas in a more casual atmosphere (plus they have a taco truck for special events!)

The waters of the lake inspire relaxing and fun-filled times, and that mood carries over into many restaurants. More often than not, diners are casually dressed, children’s favorites are offered and prices are affordable. Many places also have outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal and the fresh air when the weather is favorable. A walk through pedestrian friendly Birkdale Village in Huntersville will tempt your taste buds with all kinds of dining options. You’ll feel like you’ve hit the jackpot with casual restaurants offering Asian fusion, woodfired pizzas, upscale burgers, and traditional American favorites, as well as a fancy establishment specializing in steaks and seafood. Just a few miles north at Exit 23, places like Verde Mexican Nuevo Latin Fusion and Famous Toastery beckon. North Carolina is noted for its barbecue, and the lake area is home to several establishments that have legendary followings, such as Lancaster’s BBQ or Midwood Smokehouse in Birkdale Village. Slow-smoked pork with sauce served in squeeze bottles on the side is the way to go. Don’t forget to try a side of Brunswick Stew or mac and cheese (considered a vegetable here), and a serving of banana pudding for dessert. And if you’re looking to finish things off with dessert, Bakery 28 in Cornelius features creations by owner/ pastry chef Keli Marks, who has created desserts for three former U.S. presidents. Or, for a more casual affair, visit SweetCakes Bakery in Cornelius for a mouthwatering cupcake.

Breweries

Crafty Delights LKN Breweries are a big hit BY RENEE ROBERSON

Lake Norman is craft beer enthusiast’s delight. Breweries and taprooms offer the perfect opportunity to gather and socialize, play a game of cornhole, and catch up with a group of friends, plus you can usually find them at festivals, street fairs, outdoor movies, and concerts. Local breweries enjoy experimenting with new flavors and varieties, and the customers are more than happy to try them out. Not only that, LKN breweries can often be found supporting local nonprofits and hosting health and wellness events. Ass Clown Brewing in Cornelius is an establishment that started out as a homebrewing venture. Owner Matt Glidden isn’t afraid to play around with ingredients like ghost chilies and boysenberries and offers more than 200 plus rotating beers with 31 different taps in the tasting room. Located in Huntersville, Crafty Beer Guys offers a selection of beer plus high-end wine and those interested in delving into creating their own concoctions with homebrewing supplies. Featuring more than 350 labels of beer and 150 selections of wines, you’ll often find patrons relaxing at the end of the day on the covered front porch or outdoor patio. Owners Kristian Pedersen and Shawn Richards also offer their support to

Cornelius-based D-9 Brewing Company was founded by two engineers and a doctor in 2014, so it’s no surprise that the brewery’s beer has garnered several awards (especially for its sour beers) and often hosts food trucks and a popular weekly “Yoga and a Beer!” class taught by an experienced instructor. Eleven Lakes Brewing in Cornelius specializes in using a small batch brewing process to create brews such as Apricot Habanero, Coconut Porter, River Otter Red. They also offer live entertainment, the Ales and Autos car club, weekly yoga sessions and support area food trucks. Owners David and Allison Hamme wanted to create a brewery with an “explorers club of yesteryear” with Lost Worlds Brewing in Cornelius. As a family who loves adventurous travels, they used their love of history,

treasure hunts and travel for the concept of the brewery. Patrons can expect signature “basecamp” beers, lower-alcohol varieties, tableside service from a variety of local restaurants, Wednesday night yoga in the beer garden, and more. They also recently partnered with Carolina Raptor Center and plan to hold fundraising events at the brewery, promote the CRC and collaborate on a special release beer in the near future. Huntersville’s Primal Brewery is the brainchild of two local residents who first experimented with home brewing with their friends, family and neighbors. The brewery now sits on more than three acres, and you’ll often find patrons gathered on the picnic tables outside and grabbing dinner from a variety of food trucks. Cheers!

Get Outside

THE LAKE NORMAN AREA OFFERS A VARIETY OF GREENWAYS TO EXPLORE.

Wide Open Spaces Greenways offer residents much needed time in nature COMPILED BY STAFF REPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANT WALDECK

Being outside is part of life in the Lake Norman area. In the northern part of Mecklenburg County, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson have their fair share of greenways with more to come. Area residents love the access to greenways because you can choose your preferred way to enjoy them, whether it’s through walking, running, biking, etc., and you can enjoy nature solo or with others. The Caldwell Station Creek Greenway, covering 2.6 miles and connecting Bailey Road Park to Highway 21, runs up against the Heritage Green and Oakhurst subdivisions, making access to the trail just a few steps away from residents’ homes.

Carolina Thread Trail On many of the area’s greenways, you’ll see markers that read Carolina Thread Trail. In fact, 22 miles of the Carolina Thread Trail’s more than 260 completed miles run through the Lake Norman area. The trail runs through 15 counties in North and South Carolina. The Lake Norman section of the Catawba River Blueway (part of the Carolina Thread Trail) is approximately 31 miles long, making it possible to paddle part of the trail. Throughout the trail, you’ll find various attractions, both historical and commercial.

sidewalks in Davidson. The wide paved trail accommodates walkers, runners, and bikers. This trail winds along a pleasant creek and through neighborhoods in the town of Davidson. Occasional benches line the trail and provide comfortable resting spots for trail visitors. Recently, the city of Cornelius extended the greenway into the Antiquity neighborhood. So now the community can enjoy an 8.5-mile hike or ride from Antiquity Greenway to the West Branch Nature Preserve Trail.

Happenings in Huntersville Torrence Creek Greenway runs 1.4 miles through woods and behind neighborhoods off Gilead Road in Huntersville. The western section of the greenway runs through a meadow, where neighbors say they often see deer. The eastern section passes by a series of large rock formations, with some rocks as big as school buses. Short sections of the greenway are boardwalks that meander through wetlands. Also in Huntersville, a tunnel that will run under I-77 connecting downtown Huntersville with Rosedale Park is almost complete. A proposed Lower McDowell Creek Greenway west of the Wynfield subdivision is in the development stages that would connect the Upper McDowell Creek Greenway, which runs along Birkdale in Huntersville and create seven miles of trail. Wherever you choose to explore, stay safe and be sure to take in all the natural beauty our area greenways offer! A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

Welcome Home! SUZANNE MEYER, FAR LEFT ON THE BACK ROW, FOUNDED THE WELCOME COMMITTEE IN 1998.

BY JEAN SPANGLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CRATES

Longtime committee helps newcomers settle into their new homes Suzanne Meyer, the founder of The Welcome Committee, can be described as a high-energy people person. It shows in her face and in her enthusiasm for helping people feel welcomed in a new town or city. “Research indicates that moving is considered to be the third most stressful experience after death and divorce,” says Meyer. “I found it to be extremely helpful when someone welcomed me to the community almost 30 years ago.” Meyer, a native of Long Island, is a mother of three adult children. Soon after moving to the Lake Norman area in the 1990s, Meyer went to work for Welcome Wagon where she enjoyed meeting new people and putting her degree in mass communications from Boston University to use. When Welcome Wagon sold their name and switched formats to direct mail, Meyer incorporated to continue the face-toface business model of connecting newcomers with local businesses. It was through the encouragement of sponsors that allowed Meyer to found The Welcome Committee in 1998 serving Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Denver, Stanley and Iron Station. Today, Meyer, along with 2021-2022

10 Welcome Committee “Greeters,” call on newcomers to the area with a beautiful basket of gifts including valuable coupons from local businesses and service providers. Newcomers also receive specialty products, along with physician directories, restaurant menus, special offers from sponsors such as hospitals, medical practices, hair salons, veterinarians, auto dealerships to name just a few. “Newcomers really appreciate receiving community information and special offers from our sponsors who wish them a warm and genuine welcome. It also saves newcomers a significant amount of time by having everything in one neat package.” The welcome basket also contains state and local maps, information on area sites and attraction, a N.C. Travel Guide, N.C. Wine Guide and much more. “It’s so much fun to represent and promote our beautiful state’s tourism attractions as well,” says Meyer. “After they settle into their new home, they can’t wait to start exploring what their new community and state have to offer!” To learn more about The Welcome Committee visit www. thewelcomecommittee.net. Huntersville

HUNTERSVILLE OFFERS MANY PUBLIC PARKS FOR RECREATION.

Culture, enrichment, and the great outdoors BY BEK MITCHELL-KIDD The Town of Huntersville continues to grow rapidly while adapting with the times, and there’s never a lack of things to do. When we first moved to the area, we picked Huntersville because it was halfway between Uptown where I was working, and Mooresville where my husband’s office is located. More than a decade later and evolving from a couple without kids to a family of four, the location still fits. While the pandemic caused a lot of annual Huntersville events to pause, things are slowly in the works again. People travel from all over to attend the Renaissance Festival each fall, as well as the Loch Norman Highland Games. Rural Hill’s Sheepdog Trials and Dog Festival and North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival grow more popular each year. Not to mention the many live outdoor concerts, farmers markets and expansive greenways. You’ll find fishing spots and boat launches along with Lake Norman Community Sailing, where residents can purchase family passes that

40

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

give you access to affordable and accessible water activities. There are great neighborhoods at lots of different price points, and amazing schools, from public, private and charter. We have pools and splash pads that have produced both swim champs and happy memories, cyclists are everywhere, and there are plenty of pooch-friendly patios where you can sip a beer or other refreshing beverages. The community is diverse with everything from the headquarters of national franchises (think Target, Publix, Whole Foods, Dick’s Sporting Goods and more) to plenty of places to slow down with friends and enjoy the sunset on a bench by the lake. For foodies, Huntersville’s game is strong, with mainstays like eez Fusion & Sushi and local fave La Unica, and hand-churned ice cream parlors and cupcakeries. We’ve got living history, birds of prey, horse and flower farms and breweries galore. On the enrichment end, Huntersville also has the amazing

North County Regional Library, which was recently renovated, and also the spacious Discovery Place KIDS in the heart of downtown. Numerous parks and greenways that help us stay in shape, including Latta Plantation, which has a nature preserve for hiking, canoeing and horseback rides. Huntersville continues to be the type of town where there is always something to do, but is still a place to escape and enjoy doing nothing at all.

Cornelius

A lake lifestyle with plenty of amenities OLD TOWN CORNELIUS OFFERS QUAINT SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS.

BY RENEE ROBERSON

Full disclosure: I technically live in Davidson, but because “my” half of my neighborhood falls within the town limits of Cornelius, I get to enjoy the best of two amazing towns. Having been in this area since 2003, I’ve watched Cornelius grow and love how much it has to offer area residents. I don’t live on the lake, but if I want to dip my toes in the water we have the lakefront beach area at Ramsey Creek Park, or we can simply drive 10 minutes up the street to the Lake Norman YMCA for stand up paddleboarding or kayaking. There are plenty of boat clubs where we can rent a boat for a day if we want to do some lake sightseeing. For a fun meal right on the water, there’s Port City Club or Hello Sailor! You can get a sense of the rich history of the town (legend has it that the town’s origin has been traced to a dispute over cotton weighing) by driving down Catawba Avenue. A historic building that once housed a mill sits adjacent to Town Hall in Old Town Cornelius, and you can attend monthly arts and culture festivals right in the heart of Cornelius, complete with food trucks and familyfriendly entertainment. The Cain Center for the Arts will soon add even more cultural opportunities to an already vibrant town. Bailey Road Park is often the site of festivals, concerts as well as the annual fireworks show. Cornelius has plenty of unique boutiques, like FlairTRADE Consign, Sweet Magnolia, Walls of Books and Luna’s, plus Dutchman’s Designs and Home, Heart & Soul for gifts and

home décor and design. We have everything from comfort food to fast food chains, breweries like Eleven Lakes and D9 and popular grocery stores like Aldi, The Fresh Market, Harris Teeter and Publix. Whether you live in a historic craftsman-style home in the heart of town, a townhouse or a lakefront property, the town has a variety of neighborhoods with amenities to please every member of the family. The town is so popular it has attracted the likes of celebrities and professional athletes, along with corporate executives who enjoy the slower pace of life on the lake. Cornelius is a great example of how to marry small-town charm with modern amenities, and I appreciate being connected to all it has to offer.

The Towns of Lake Norman DOWNTOWN DAVIDSON OFFERS THE BEST OF SMALL TOWN CHARM.

A college-town atmosphere with plenty of food, culture and entertainment BY KAREL BOND LUCANDER

Mature oaks and majestic pines shade an eclectic mix of historic homes and modern neighborhoods lining the little haven of Davidson. Founded in 1837, Davidson College is a private liberal arts institution that offers educational and entertainment opportunities. The surrounding town offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and worldly sophistication in a lakeside country setting, and Davidson is often named one of the best places to live in North Carolina. The college provides many opportunities for entertainment, from live performances at Duke Family Performance Hall, basketball games at Baker Sports Complex and a mecca for art enthusiasts at the Belk Visual Arts Center At the heart of the Village Green, the public library, college and a string of century-old storefronts stand as welcoming sentries. There are plenty of fun and unique places to shop in town. The Casual Creative features modern folk art. You’ll find great gifts at Honeysuckle Home, inspired items at Moxie Mercantile, the latest fashion at MINE by Sandy and Wild Cats’ gear at Davidson College Store. And it’s hard to leave the Village Store empty-handed. When hunger hits, there are many options to suit your palette. Grab a burger and chocolate soda at The Soda Shop, Davidson’s favorite diner since 1951. Savor a handcrafted sandwich and soup at The Pickled Peach or daily specials at Famous Toastery. Sample the award-winning fare at Kindred. Or travel the epicurean world of Mestizo’s, Carrburritos Taqueria, Il Bosco or Sabi Asian Bistro. Other great options include Davidson Ice House, Brickhouse Tavern, Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse, Mandolino’s Artisan Pizza and The Crazy Pig for BBQ. Enjoy breakfast at The Egg or eat crabcakes at lakeside North Harbor Club. Once refueled, you won’t have to wander far for outdoor adventure. Under a canopy of Carolina Blue skies, you can walk, run or bike at the Davidson Greenway or woodland trails of Fisher Farm, and paddleboard, sail or fish on nearby Lake Davidson or Lake Norman. The feel of celebration is in the air almost daily in the

town. Stop at Summit or Good Drip Coffee for a latte, grab a matinee at Our Town Cinemas Café & Taphouse and enjoy a sweet treat at Ben & Jerry’s, Whit’s Frozen Custard or Davidson Chocolate Co. Meditate on the red-brick labyrinth at the college’s peace garden or stretch yourself at Yoga on Davidson. Avid readers won’t find a more thoughtful collection than at Main Street Books. Take in a play at Armour Street Theatre and then toast any occasion at Davidson Wine Co. Looking for a beautiful bouquet or fresh meat and produce? The Davidson Farmer’s Market features items from more than 35 farmers. You’ll spot old friends and make new ones here on Saturday mornings. In Davidson, neighbors gather for seasonal events, from April’s Art on the Green to Town Day in May and a summer series of picnic-style Concerts on the Green. For the annual Halloween March, hundreds of princesses and superheroes line up for goodies from local merchants. In early December, relish the holiday spirit with horse-drawn carriages, strolling carolers and musicians and gift vendors on the Green, all in a Dickens-like atmosphere at our popular Christmas In Davidson. When I count all the reasons I love living in Davidson with my family, it’s hard for me to imagine a better place to call home.

Faith

Worship Your Way Find what your soul desires in the community BY RENEE ROBERSON

Houses of worship are an important part of the Lake Norman area community, and many have taken root throughout the towns over the years. Most of the early European settlers here in the 1770s were Scots-Irish or Scottish. History has it that one of the oldest churches in the Lake Norman area began when a group of Christians gathered on the bank of a creek under a bank of trees they called “Ramah Grove.” While the first log structure housing the church was constructed in 1783, the current sanctuary used for Ramah Grove Presbyterian Church was built in 1881. The church still stands today. Hopewell Presbyterian Church off Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville also has a rich history, having been officially founded in 1762. Davidson College Presbyterian Church was founded in 1837. In Cornelius, Bethel Presbyterian Church was founded in 1828 and still

46

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

flourishes in the lakeside town as part of the Presbyterian movement called ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. The community is also home to Grace Covenant Church, which started out as Cornelius Tabernacle under the leadership of Dr. S.K. and Emily Clanton in 1937. Grace Covenant now serves approximately a few thousand parishioners through services at three different campuses; 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius, 531 N. Greenbriar Road, Statesville and 296 N Hwy 16 in Denver. Serving both the Davidson and Huntersville communities, Lake Forest Church is a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church denomination. Freedom to worship all types of denominations is alive and well here. You’ll also find The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Davidson is home to the Davidson Friends Meeting House for the Quaker

Community and Temple Kol Tikvah, serving the Jewish community. To help accommodate the growth brought on by the construction of Lake Norman, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Mooresville raised funds for the building that still stands today in the early 1960s. You’ll find St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Huntersville and St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville. For those who prefer a more contemporary form of worship, there’s also a variety of nondenominational churches spread throughout the area, such as Elevation Church, Journey Church, Newsong Church, LIFE Fellowship Church and many others. These houses of worship are only the beginning of a very long list— because no matter where you prefer to seek out spiritual comfort, you’re sure to find what your soul desires in the towns of Lake Norman.

There are also eight tennis courts, and paved walking and biking trails, most of which wind through nicely shaded wooded areas. For a small fee, visitors can rent waterside picnic decks equipped with a grill and a table. A little further north, in Troutman, there’s Lake Norman State Park, an ideal place to enjoy the area’s natural beauty and go running or mountain biking. The 1,328-acre park includes 13 miles of shoreline along the northeastern shore of Lake Norman. There is a 125-yard beach and public swimming area, which is supervised by lifeguards seasonally, as well as a concession stand, showers, restrooms and changing stalls. Whatever you feel like doing recreationally, you can bet there’s a park or facility that offers it here. Go play!

Off Court All Star Huntersville physician cares for members of pro sports teams

All in the family

Medicine is a family tradition. His grandfather graduated from Spain’s University of Madrid Medical School in 1915. His father followed in 1956 and mom was a nurse. Asked how many Hornets game he attends typically, he laughs, “By my count, I have attended 740 consecutive games. The only game I ever missed was in 2005 to attend my father’s funeral.” His role on the team is vital. President of Basketball Operations & General

BY MARTIN ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARTIN ROSE Dr. Joe Garcia knew from seventh grade his calling was a sports medicine doctor. “I loved sports as a kid. And I always wanted to practice medicine,” he says. He recalls reading about an injured NBA basketball star and his doctor’s role in recovery. “I told my dad that day I wanted to be a sports medicine doctor. I never wavered from that path.” Today, he lives that dream out as the Charlotte Hornets team physician. “I have a dream job,” he says. “I work for owner Michael Jordan. I meet hundreds of NBA players, coaches and staff. I travel the world.” You’d think running a family and sports medicine practice at Novant Health Lakeside Family Physicians in Huntersville along with Hornets’ responsibility would be daunting, but Dr. Garcia also serves as team physician for the Charlotte Checkers hockey team, four Joe Gibbs race teams and seven high school athletic departments.

Spectators Welcome!

----------------------------------Manager Mitch Kupchak calls Dr. Garcia “the key medical professional we cannot do without when it comes to the health and safety of the Hornets players and staff.”

The Curry connection

Dr. Garcia started with the original Charlotte Hornets (now the New Orleans Pelicans) in 1997-98. The team ball boys were 8- and 9-year-olds Steph and Seth Curry. Yes, the same Currys now starring for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks, respectively. “Coach Dave Cowens would get so mad because those two were always dribbling a basketball when he was trying to talk to the players. Thump. Thump. Thump. It never stopped. They always had a ball.” Reflecting on his years as team physician, Dr. Garcia is most thankful for the hundreds of amazing players and coaches he has met. He still keeps in touch with many. “People like to categorize NBA players as egotistic maniacs,” he said. “That’s just not the case. So many players are unbelievable human beings off the court, but they chose to avoid publicity and keep their good deeds private. “I get attached to the players and their families,” continues Dr. Garcia. “I take care of their moms, kids, wives and girlfriends. House calls are the norm. My job is to have them ready to play and they know they can call me day or night, year-round.”

Events and Awards Meeting & Greeting

Numerous networking opportunities available through The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce

Annual Diversity Luncheon

The Lake Norman Chamber’s Diversity Council provides a forum for sharing vital information, networking, and fostering professional development for minority and women-owned businesses. The Council also honors existing businesses in the Lake Norman region that embrace diversity in their everyday business practices. The Diversity Council hosts its annual luncheon in September, where attendees are treated to an inspiring message followed by awards presented to the Corporation, Non-Profit, Small Business, and Individual who promotes inclusiveness and diversity in their workplace and community.

Annual Business Expo

The Lake Norman Chamber Expo is an event that provides member businesses the opportunity to showcase their goods and services to the Lake Norman community —both to the public and other member businesses. Usually held in October at the Huntersville Recreation Center, The Expo has between 150-200 exhibitors and sponsors and is attended by 1500-2000 members of the business community and public.

Annual Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament

Dust off your clubs and prepare to hit the links with the Chamber for our Annual Fall Golf Classic on Oct. 25, 2021. Combine your Chamber networking with a healthy dose of competition. It’s also a great chance to entertain clients and customers. This Captain’s Choice event hosts more than 125 players and participants. Members can become involved in a number of ways, including volunteering and sponsorship. The net proceeds from the tournament fund Chamber programs and operations. For more information about the tournament, or to become a sponsor, call 704.892.1922 or email us at: chamber@lakenorman.org.

Business AfterHours and Second Friday Speed Networking

Unwind after your workday, enjoy refreshments and connect with the local business community. Business AfterHours is a relaxing way to end your day, meet people, and enhance your business and personal relationships. Attendance is always high, so bring plenty of business cards. Business AfterHours events are generally held the third Thursday of every month. The Chamber also hosts

2021-2022

Second Friday Speed Networking events at Sam’s Club in Mooresville, where members from different Chambers get the chance to build their business networks in a condensed format.

Coffee Connections & Business Before Hours Develop potential leads and build business relationships before the workday begins. Throughout the month, many of our Chamber members host meet-and-greet sessions at their places of business. Attendance at these easy going, unstructured sessions is usually high, so bring plenty of business cards. Who knows? You might have a brand new customer before your workday has even begun.

Power Luncheons

Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce Power Luncheons are held five times a year. These luncheons include: the Diversity Luncheon in September, a Healthcare Summit, Public Safety Awards, Small Business Event of the Year and another luncheon focused on various topics.

Ribbon Cuttings & Mixers

Upon joining the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce, or if you’ve recently expanded/renovated, one of the first opportunities you’ll have to get to know your fellow members and introduce them to your business is to have a ribbon cutting or Mixer. If you would prefer to have a simple ribbon cutting ceremony, you’ll have the opportunity to borrow the Chamber’s oversized scissors for the event. You may also extend your ribbon cutting event by also having a mixer. The Chamber will also help you publicize your ribbon cutting, announcing to our membership via our website event calendar and newsletter. Ambassadors and other Chamber staff will also be onsite for the occasion. Mixers are less formal, generally with food and drink, and can be scheduled at any time with a minimum of 10 days notice.

Annual Gala & Awards Banquet

A black tie-optional event, the annual Lake Norman Chamber Annual Gala & Awards banquet is an elegant night of celebration, during which the “changing of the guard” occurs as the outgoing Chamber Chairman hands over the reigns to the incoming Chair. The next gala and banquet will take place in January 2022. There is also a presentation of the Robert T. Cashion Business Person of the Year award and the Duke Energy Citizenship & Service Award — which recognizes leadership and/or involvement in volunteerism and community service.
