Let us help you turn your dream home into a reality!

As we fall into the holiday season, the fluctuation in interest rates has started to concern the general public and for good reason! As you look at the landscape of the industry and our economy, everything is pointing to interest rates continuing to increase sooner rather than later. Such increases will make it harder to qualify for that new home. It also makes that new home more expensive to own, and it can reduce the benefits one receives from refinancing their home (s).

Getting into the Christmas Spirit I absolutely love decorating for Christmas. Well, let me rephrase that; I love enjoying the decorations after they’re all set up. It’s the pulling out the storage containers and boxes full of decorations, sorting through them, deciding what normal home accessories need to go into storage to make room for the holiday ones, that I hate. For at least two days my house is a total wreck. Glitter is pretty much everywhere, along with sprigs of artificial tree limbs, ornament hangers, extension cords, and of course, batteries. Whatever happened to just putting up the Christmas tree, stringing the lights (there were no pre-lit trees), throwing on some red and green aluminum balls and calling it a day? Today, you’ve not truly decorated until every mantle is adorned, every window is ablaze, every towel in the bathroom has Santa’s

smiling face and all the beds have fresh holiday linens and pillows. I have a few friends that even change out the pictures on their walls to display the latest holiday renderings. Seriously? So, last week we began dragging out all the stuff and deciding what goes where. My husband does the outside decorating while I tackle the inside. Alexa plays the holiday classics while a Hallmark Christmas movie plays silently on the wide screen (by the way, nothing puts my holiday decorations to shame more than a beautifully decorated “anything” on the Hallmark channel). With each decoration I place, I feel a little more holiday spirit. By the time we’re all done, I’m drinking apple cider, looking for cookie recipes and inviting friends over

for a little holiday cheer! Every year I tell myself that we’re getting too old for all this decorating and I’m not going to go all out next year. But then I look outside and see the neighbors stopping to admire our front yard and I look inside and see my collections of Santas from all over the world peeping through every nook and cranny of the house. I see the tree ornaments we’ve collected throughout the years and the same stockings we’ve had since our kids were little still hang from the mantle. I see the beautifully wrapped gifts under the tree and picture my grandson running in on Christmas day and heading straight for them. That’s about the time I turn to my husband and say “Honey, we’re going to have to get up early the day after Christmas if we’re going to catch the best sales on holiday décor for next year!” Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

Things to know about

taxes for 2021 filing BY » Peter Eisenhauer

N

ot to interrupt your holiday celebrations, but some might say that December is also the month for making sure you are ready to square accounts with Uncle Sam early in the coming year.

Naturally, the IRS advises that we get ready. “Tax planning is for everyone,” according to a recent IRS press release. “Get ready today to file your 2021 federal income tax return. Planning ahead can help you file an accurate return and avoid processing delays that can slow your tax refund.” And the IRS provides detailed guidance on gathering and organizing your tax records, and making use of online account information that is available to taxpayers. There is a comprehensive set of resources available at this link: https://www.irs. gov/individuals/steps-to-take-nowto-get-a-jump-on-next-years-taxes. Among the general tips offered are to take advantage of free filing, and to file electronically and select direct deposit to get the fastest possible refund. As an added incentive, the 10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

IRS notes that direct deposit saves all taxpayers money as it is substantially cheaper to issue refunds electronically. We asked two Lake Norman area financial professionals for their tips on preparing to file this year’s tax returns. David Hedges, a Certified Wealth Strategist (CWS®), and President of Bookman Bright Inc. in Davidson says, “The end of every year is always an important time for financial review and clean up; especially as it relates to taxes. So, while you may be thinking about Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Christmas and any other holidays that are celebrated at the end of the year, you should put aside just a little sliver of time to make sure that your “financial ducks are in a row” and that you’ve met any end of the year IRS requirements.” Daniel Tobias, a Certified Financial Planner, and founder of Passport Wealth Management, in Cornelius says, “With all the changes we’ve experienced this year, and are still expecting in the coming years, tax planning is becoming increasingly complex. Therefore, it can be valuable to work with a financial professional who can advise on taxes and to begin the process as

early in the year as possible. Some deadlines have already passed while others are just around the corner.” Where to begin? According to Hedges, “First, what you should do and what I do for my clients is review your tax situation as it relates to short and long-term capital gains taxes. Make sure that you don’t have any large and taxable realized gains that could easily be offset with realizing some losses before the end of the year.” “I can run quick and easy reports for my client accounts to give me a taxable gain status and hopefully you have a similar resource available as well,” Hedges said. “This is typically the time of year where we might review last year’s tax return against the income events of this year for a given client. Doing so, against long-term income projections and a corresponding long-term plan, will help us to determine if it makes sense to convert any deductible IRA assets to Roth. ” Tobias said. “This isn’t specific to 2021 but with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act scheduled to sunset in a few years, it’s possible that we may never see tax rates this low again. People who

are retired and not yet subject to any Required Minimum Distribution, may benefit from reviewing such a strategy.” Hedges also focuses on the Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) on Defined Contribution Plans including Traditional and Rollover IRAs. “This is a biggie because the penalty for any money not distributed by year end (12/31) is 50%! Yes, 50%,” Hedges said. He also stresses that there have been recent changes to age requirements: “An important point to make for RMDs is that the age has changed per the passing of the SECURE Act in 2019. You were previously required to start your RMD by April 1st after the year that you turned age 70 1⁄2.” “The new rule states that if you’ve reached age 70 1⁄2 before January 1, 2020, the old requirement still applies but if you haven’t reached age 70 1⁄2 by January 1, 2020, the new requirement is making your RMD by April 1 of the year following the year that you turn age 72. In summary, if you haven’t turned 70 1⁄2 by January 1, 2020, your RMD requirement is

now by April 1 of the year following the year that you turn age 72.” Tobias adds that for business owners, particularly those who are sole practitioners, some employer based retirement plans may need to be in place and/or contributed to by the end of the year. “Depending on income levels, a sole practitioner who has the ability to max-fund a Solo 401k, for example, could experience a very big tax impact a few months from now when they file taxes,” Tobias said.

Notable changes for 2021 Tobias points to an opportunity that may apply to recent retirees: “Anybody with a significant decrease in income for 2021, such as someone who retired at the end of 2020 or the start of 2021, who didn’t already receive economic stimulus checks at the start of 2021, may have one last chance to qualify for those checks based on their 2021 taxes,” Tobias said. He advises that if such a person, or their spouse, is still working, it may make sense to consider pushing

as much income as possible into a retirement plan (e.g. 401k) to reduce 2021 taxable income in order to qualify. Tobias notes that with the reconciliation bill working its way through Congress it’s a little difficult to know what is going to happen next year and beyond. “For individuals who do an annual Back-Door Roth IRA contribution, or possibly anybody with basis in an IRA, now may be the time to convert these assets to Roth IRAs as this might not be allowed in the future,” Tobias advised. Any individuals who typically have a large amount of capital gains each year, or who have large appreciated assets, might find it worthwhile to recognize some gains in 2021 to hedge against any potential increase in the rate of capital gains taxation in 2022 and beyond.

As always, the motto ‘be prepared’ applies.

“The bottom line is to make sure that you consult a professional if you’re unsure of any end of the year tax requirements that could land you in hot water!” said Hedges. LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021 11

Shopping Local Has Many Benefits BY » Peter Eisenhauer

W

alking out of a local boutique near our home, my wife was more than pleased with our purchase -- a beautiful wool throw blanket that perfectly matches the colors of our living room sofa. The color match was confirmed because she had brought along a small pillow in the same fabric. “What I can’t believe,” she said, “is that I searched the whole internet for a blanket like this and we end up finding it right here in town.” Some luck and some focused attention got her that prized item. She had actually spotted the blanket while visiting the shop with a friend the day before. But it was also the pleasure of leisurely browsing in an attractive, unique shop, carrying a wide variety of furniture, household items and decor, that added to the pleasure immensely. The Lake Norman area has so many opportunities for this kind of experience. You can discover many great local stores just by flipping through the pages of Limitless Magazine. From the many boutiques in Huntersville, Cornelius and downtown Davidson, throughout the area you will find locally owned 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

and independent retailers with their own style, offerings and expertise. Like the new Strawberry Fields, in Denver, where you can find furniture and home decor in a setting imbued with a Beatles vibe. Also in Denver, Albertine Florals, Wine & Gifts offers another unique shopping experience. And, now more than ever, it is important and beneficial to ourselves and our communities to support these local businesses. Start with the financial. Local retail doesn’t generate the level of individual wealth that might fund, say, personal space travel (vis a vis perhaps boating on Lake Norman). However, dollars spent at locally owned businesses stay in the community. Studies have shown this ‘local dividend’ to be massive. In studies cited in a Michigan State University report, of $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 recirculate into the local economy. That number is only $43 for chain stores. It would be approximately $0 for online shopping. Studies have also shown that small businesses are outsized contributors to their communities in terms of charitable giving. The small business advocacy group SCORE notes that nonprofit organizations receive 250% more support from small businesses. Local businesses

are good neighbors, contributing to local youth organizations, supporting first responders, and other valuable causes. They provide opportunity for local suppliers. They are also key to maintaining and developing downtown and historic areas in large and small communities. Pam Hess, of Albertine Floral, Wine & Gifts, told Limitless about the philosophy of her business. “We are first a full-service florist. We create custom arrangements with both live and silk florals. That is perhaps what Albertine Florals is best known for, as the florist shop has been here in Denver since 2008.” Hess and her daughter bought Albertine in 2019. The mission? “We want to help people creatively express their sentiments!” “Like everyone else, we notice the change in the world, and the change in Denver, too,” Hess said. “Most shoppers are more excited than ever to buy and give unique and local pieces. And they seem to want to have a hand in choosing and creating their gifts, even if it just means picking the ribbon that will go on the dish garden they will send, or the pottery piece in which their flowers will be arranged.” Adding to the customer

experience, Hess also emphasizes opportunities for local producers. “We have doubled the footprint so that we could create a space for local artisans to share their work,” she said. “We now have more than 15 local residents who sell their artwork, pottery, jewelry, wood work, fabric creations and more!” “To supplement that,” Hess said, “We also provide a large selection of gifts and home decor, from candles to pillows, baby gifts to wedding gifts, special occasion gifts, just to name a few. Top that off with our unique selection of wines, which we handpick from vendors to make sure we not only love them, but that they are only available at small local shops like ours. We often include these wines in specially created gift baskets to deliver in the area. They might also include local honey or jam, local snacks, and even locally made gift items!” Albertine also hosts wine tasting events twice a month, and sponsors both “sip and shop” events, where local artists can show off and sell their creations, and creative classes. The

classes, hosted by some of the same artisans, have included glass painting, calligraphy, pottery, rock painting, watercolor. The shop has also hosted book launch events for local authors. Amid the dreary realities of the ongoing disruptions to our economy with the impact of the global pandemic, creative responses are called for. If we are mostly past the capacity restrictions and curbside pickups, we are still dealing with delayed shipments, unexpected shortages of goods and supplies, labor market upheavals, and inflation. Shifting some of our consumption to locally owned businesses in our communities can have many benefits. In person shopping with knowledgable, attentive vendors has always been a pleasure. Let’s enjoy it more. Of course there is business you have to do online, and of course there is great convenience and power in the ability to search the entire internet for something you can’t find locally. But even then, when you are shopping from your couch, it’s nice to have that perfect blanket that you found right here in town.

The Best Modern Dentistry Can Provide

The Smile Architects create an atmosphere to enjoy their work and patients

T

here’s a fun give-and-take online discussion on an architecture forum where a young man living in Copenhagen, Denmark ponders whether he should pursue architecture or dentistry in school. He said: “although I can’t seem to find the great interest in dentistry amongst architects, I find the main link between them is the appreciation of aesthetics and good, well-functioning design.” He outlines the pros and cons for both professions and concludes that dentistry would be his better option because he would “only get patients who are happy to see you. And you are forced to stay humble as no patients will see you otherwise.” Since this posting is more than a decade old, one has to wonder if there is a humble young Danish dentist out there that maybe designs dentist offices on the side? “Our name came from our love of designing beautiful smiles and how that affects individuals that have lived life without the confidence to smile,” stated Dr. Chris Meletiou owner of The Smile Architects in Huntersville. “Our office started serving Huntersville and the Lake Norman area in 1982 with Drs.

Stephen and Debbie Hix. My brother, Dr. Jim Meletiou, and I joined them in the 1990’s but they have since retired and we acquired the practice.” On their website, the Meletiou brothers “are dedicated to creating beautiful smiles by providing the most technologically advanced oral care in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Our doctors are meticulous practitioners driven by the desire and ability to bridge the ever-evolving technology with the caring interpersonal relationships necessary to best serve their patients.” Drs. Chris and Jim Meletiou are supported by dental hygienists Kristen Sheets, Lois Logan, and Winnie Tucker, as well as dental assistants Lara Jehle, Jessie Lafler, and Michelle Davis Gilbert. The practice is rounded out by Karon Fontaine, the doctors’ coordinator, Chantal Wolff, the insurance coordinator, and Sharon Rowsey, the hygiene coordinator. The Smile Architects provides complete preventive dentistry which includes comprehensive evaluations / oral exams, dental cleaning, creating custom mouth guards for athletes, the treatment of periodontal disease, the

non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease called scaling and root planing, root canal treatments, and extractions. The practice includes cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign® orthodontic system, same day restorations, dental implants, and sleep apnea treatment. “Part of what got us involved in dentistry was the creative part,” Dr. Chris Meletiou stated. “We’ve always enjoyed being able to apply our hands to create things.” “Dentistry has really been evolving technologically in the last 30 years and we saw that part and what it could do for people and wanted to be part of that. I think we both wanted to be able to decide how patients were treated without interference and so for us practicing in a family type of setting was important.” Their goals are to listen and meet each individual’s needs. “Everybody is different and may be looking for different treatment types,” they said. “We provide the best treatment modern dentistry can provide and create an atmosphere where we can enjoy our profession, our team and patients.”

1. Line a sheet pan with wax paper or parchment, and mix together cinnamon, salt & pepper in a small bowl and set aside.

lush LANDSCAPES

Love your outdoor spaces

Landscape Lighting

You’ve pulled out all the stops to make your house and yard look firstrate. So why let that hard work disappear at nightfall? With a flick of a switch and some strategically placed outdoor lights, you can roll back the darkness and put it all on display! Done right, landscape lighting makes the best of what you’ve got by highlighting your home’s architectural features and drawing attention to prized plantings and trees. Most landscape lighting today is low voltage, and with good reason. Unlike 120-volt systems, it’s safer to work with and less costly to install. And though low-voltage lights receive one-tenth the 24 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

power, thanks to a step-down transformer, there’s no limit to the effects they can achieve, from ethereal moonlight beamed down from a tree canopy to a subtle glow that washes over a low garden wall. More than just picking the right hardware, a pleasing lighting scheme is also about artistry.

Outdoor living spaces

With outdoor living becoming more and more popular, homeowners are looking for more ways to bring the entertainment outdoors with them. Adding a custom fire feature not only allows for extended time outdoors, but also provides a means of cooking outdoors while entertaining guests.

Much like an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit allows you to stay outside while preparing some types of food, rather than having to segregate yourself indoors in the kitchen. This increases your outdoor living space and increases the amount of time you can mingle with friends and family outdoors. Many people enjoy roasting marshmallows and cooking meat over an open pit. Providing your guests with an open flame to do this encourages bonding time and provides the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together! For more information on sprucing up your outdoor space call Whispering Pines at 704-489-0100

Enjoying the Mechanics of the Human Body Piedmont Bone & Joint offers solutions to joint ailments BY » Jeff Winke | PHOTOGRAPHY BY » Lisa Crates

he human body is mechanically sophisticated. Human movement is achieved by a complex and highly coordinated mechanical interaction between bones, muscles, ligaments and joints. No one understands this better than Dr. Brett L. Feldman with Piedmont Bone & Joint in Statesville. Dr. Feldman is an orthopaedic doctor which is sort of like being a mechanic for the human body. The practice at Piedmont concentrates on the evaluation and management of disorders and injuries of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Feldman specializes in all aspects of foot and 26 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

ankle disorders. Some of the disorders he concentrates on include bunions, complex fractures, painful heel, arthritis, rheumatoid deformities, and total joint replacement--knee, hip and ankle. In addition to his sub-specialty foot and ankle practice, Dr. Feldman maintains a strong interest in sports medicine and arthroscopy, trauma and post-traumatic deformity, and total joint replacement, including the latest technique in anterior, muscle sparing total hip replacement. “As a child I liked anything mechanical, taking stuff apart to learn how it worked,” stated Feldman. “In high school, studying biology and playing sports I became

interested in how the body works.” A football injury in high school landed him in the office of an orthopaedist--a foretelling and lucky visit. The doctor had played football in high school as well, so they got talking about team sports and how athletes should take care of their bodies and improve performance. Feldman was fascinated with how the doctor was able to describe how the human body works. His descriptions clicked and helped Feldman visualize how the body works. This interest in the mechanics of how the human body operates buoyed him into his profession. “I enjoy learning,” Feldman said.

“In high school, studying biology and playing sports I became interested in how the body works.” “I enjoy orthopaedics because there is so much to learn that can help patients to live better, healthier lives. I never want to limit my interest and practice to a singular sub-specialty when everything is interconnected.” Because he believes knowledge in the field of orthopaedics is evolving and growing, it is not uncommon to see Dr. Feldman in his off hours reading a medical journal article. “I’ll take advantage of so-called ‘dead time,’ while my car’s oil change occurs or my carry-out pizza is being baked, to catch up on necessary reading,” said Feldman. “The field is dynamic so if I can learn something new that can help me better care for patients, I want to learn it.” Dr. Feldman is entitled to display FAAOS along with MD when writing his name. FAAOS stands for “Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.” The

designation is proudly displayed by surgeons who have completed all the stringent requirements to qualify for membership. He was named to the 2021 Top Doctors in Charlotte Magazine and was recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors for 2007 by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a leading national healthcare and research and information company. He is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Although Dr. Feldman is a trained surgeon, he doesn’t believe surgery is the best or only answer for every issue. “Most patients do not require surgery--let me repeat that--most don’t need surgery,” Feldman said. “There are numerous non-operative solutions that are effective and I prefer to seek out before surgery becomes the best option.”

Dr. Feldman completed his undergraduate and medical degree studies at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida and served his Residency at the Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. In many respects, Dr. Feldman isn’t much different than the kid he was who enjoyed taking things a part to see how they work. Today, Dr. Feldman uses what he knows to fix human bodies to work better. n the golf course, a bunker shot near the green can be intimidating. The golf course designer intended each hole to be a challenge and sometimes that includes a sand bunker (or more!) placed in just the right position to penalize a poor approach shot to the green. However, you can confidently play out of a greenside bunker to course correct. Playing out of the sand is one of a few shots where you’re not trying to hit the golf ball first. Yes, do not plan to hit the ball first! Understanding this and knowing how to use your wedges will allow you to be a fierce scorer from the sandy surface as you approach the green. Learning to access the type of sand, depth of bunker, and course conditions will allow you to adjust accordingly. Follow these steps to consistently play from the sand:

30 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

1. Select a wedge based on the distance and height you need to hit the ball. For a short green-side bunker, you can choose a 54-60 degree wedge, commonly known as a sand wedge (SW) or a lob wedge (L). 2. Take your standard grip and open your clubface; No need to grip down making the club shorter this insures you strike the sand first. Adding loft also adds the correct amount of bounce required. 3. Setup square towards your target and stabilize your stance by digging your feet ½ inch into the sand where the ball position is just forward of the middle of your stance under your left eye (image: yellow vertical line). This will ensure you to hit behind the ball. 4. Now take your swing. Plan to hit just behind the ball (image: blue circle). The swing should have enough

Short Greenside Bunker

speed to splash the sand out of the bunker and your arms should follow your shoulder alignment. Try it! Most golf courses have a practice area with bunkers. Test and learn and modify as needed for different distances. You’ll have confidence to make a great swing the next time you need to play out of a short greenside bunker. You’ve got this! A pilgrimage for a tasty visit Lunch with friends we went to visit—Albariño and pepper from Padrón

Galicia, in Spain, is the home turf of Albariño wine and pimientos de Padrón. We went to meet them there.

W

ithout a shred of evidence I find that wine tastes better closer to where its made—no evidence but lots of experience. And, clearly, food is fresher and best prepared where it originates from. That’s what took us to A Coruña in Spain’s Galicia region. Galicia was, and still is, the destination for a major pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. But we were tightly focused. Our pilgrimage was to the home of a favorite dish and a favorite wine. Thinking of Spanish wines, you think of deep, dark, red wines like Rioja or Ribera del Duero. And when it comes to Spanish vineyards, what comes to mind are desert-like, sun34 LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021

drenched conditions. Galicia, Albariño’s home, is the exact opposite of all this. Galicia, is on the northwestern corner of Spain, on the Atlantic Ocean. In Columbus’ time this region was called, “the end of the world.” It’s amazing that grapes can grow, at all. The region has a mild, maritime climate. Its coastline consists of estuaries, called rías, and that everpresent ocean. The southern group of these rías is known as Rías Baixas (the lower estuaries). This is not exactly the ideal place to grow wine grapes but, somehow, it seems to work. Spaniards refer to Albariño as “the wine of the sea.” Galicia is historically known for its marine cuisine. Over many years, Galician winemakers evolved their wine to complement local food—in this case, seafood.

Seafood is king. In A Coruña there’s even a sculpture of an octopus on the waterfront and you can see cooked octopus in the windows of stores and restaurants as you pass by. But we were on another mission. Whenever we find ourselves in any Spanish city we head for a “pequeño restaurante”—a bistro. Once inside we, invariably, start our meal with an order of pimientos de Padrón. You can find something similar in many places around the world and around the US but the “real stuff ” is available only in Spain. And we wanted to go right to the source, Galicia. We wanted to get peppered. Pimientos de Padrón are a variety of peppers from the municipality of Padrón in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. They are sautéed with plenty of heat, plenty of olive oil, a pinch of salt,

and not much else. These peppers have an intense flavor—piquant, sweet, and a little nutty. How nutty we are about them? That’s why we went to their home town, to sample them on their home turf. It can get exciting. About one in ten of the small green peppers is hot, while the rest are as mild as a green bell pepper. The exciting bit is that it’s pretty much impossible to tell hot from mild until you actually put one your mouth. Galicians even have a phrase for it—“Padrón peppers, some are hot, some are not.” So, here we were in A Coruña to link up with our food and wine friends. We headed for the Praza de Maria Pita, in front of A Coruña’s impressive City Hall. And then to a pequeño restaurante on a small sidewalk—not a tourist in sight. There’s a whole story behind Maria Pita but that’s for another day. Comfortably situated, we ordered a bottle of Albariño and a plate of pimientos de Padrón. We were on our way. When it came time for a main dish we put ourselves in the hands of our server and went for something local, a tart of ground beef and onions. It was all so simple and so superb. We were in our favorite environment, a small restaurant and some very local food and wine. Just a couple of food and wine pilgrims having a delicious time.

HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR THE WINTER

CLEAN OUT YOUR GUTTERS: water damage to your home caused by a backup of debris in the gutters is typically not covered under your homeowner’s policy. CHECK YOUR HEATING SYSTEM: Clear the area around the unit and clean the outside coils with a mild detergent. Replace your air filters to keep it running like a champ during the season change. TRIM DEAD TREE LIMBS: While your homeowner’s policy will cover if a live tree falls on your home it typically will not cover a dead tree. COVER AND WINTERIZE YOUR POOL: Not only will it help extend the life of your pool, but it will also keep your family safe.

Downsizing &

Decorating On A Dime BY » Jean Spangler

M

any of us empty nesters can appreciate the days when we pulled out all the stops to make holidays memorable for our children. And, we can also remember things like trying to unfurl a string of lights because of one broken bulb, or still finding dried out pine needles when vacuuming months after the holidays ended. And for those of us who are now not as “flexible,” the idea of constantly monitoring the water level in the tree stand while on your stomach isn’t feasible or appealing. As an empty nester, I normally spend the holidays with my son and his family who live two time zones away. When I began that tradition, I started to downsize the amount of my holiday décor. I also found that putting up a tree inside or stringing lights outside on a shaky ladder can be difficult and dangerous for one person. However, there are simple ways to decorate that won’t break your back or your bank account. When I downsized to a townhome it came with limited attic space. A few years ago, when my son and his wife began their family, I shipped all his hand-made Christmas ornaments and some of his old toys to him so he and his family can incorporate them into their holiday decorating. I also decided that buying a full-sized tree didn’t fit my townhouse or my lifestyle anymore.

However, I still wanted my home to feel festive. That’s when, as luck would have it, I found a four-foot tree devoid of foliage in someone’s trash. Yes, I stopped and put that little gem in my trunk. I loved the size and shape of the bare branches that I spray-painted white. Then I wrapped the branches in miniature white lights, festive ribbon and placed it on a table in my bay window. Today, I call it my “single woman’s tree.” It goes back into the attic, lights and all, until the next year. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on decorations to make your home look festive and inviting during the holidays. And it doesn’t have to take hours to get a holiday feel. For instance, you can find almost everything you need by simply walking in your back yard or neighborhood. I love to decorate with pine-cones and magnolia leaves. I’ve found that people are more than willing to let you cut some holly or gather pine-cones if you simply ask them. One year, I spray-painted pinecones silver and placed them on the mantle with tree branches discarded by neighbors who were sculpting their full-sized tree. In between the branches and pine cones, I placed fresh fruit such as pomegranates, pears, grapefruit and oranges for an elegant look. I also like to look for items around the house like colorful pitchers to hold greenery. I have two wine colors I fill with ornaments and clear vases I fill with water,

cranberries and votive candles. Since I gave most of the family ornaments to my son, I make a point of shopping local for a new ornament to give myself each year. It’s fun and I like the thought of having a tree that reflects my personal style. I do not invest a lot in Christmas containers or wrapping paper. While I love it when a retailer includes a beautiful gift wrap, if they don’t, I hit the low-cost stores for gift bags. I’ve also used plain brown paper to wrap gifts. This simple wrap can be topped with greenery and candy canes. If you live in a neighborhood where gift giving is the norm, or you have a lot of people to find gifts for, you may want to consider donating to a local charity and asking the organization to send them a note saying that your donation is in honor of them this holiday season. That’s a win/win for everyone. I’m also a big fan of thrift stores where you can also find festive fabrics, candle holders, books and colorful holiday plates for pennies. As the old saying goes, “another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Just because your home may be smaller in size, brightening your home for the holidays is a gift you give yourself and your mental health. All it takes is getting creative with the things you may already have around the house and in your backyard if you just look closely enough. LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021 39

Gift giving, then and now. BY » Mickey Dunaway

Limitless Magazine seems aimed at those of us who fall into the group “Seasoned Citizens,” as Rush Limbaugh used to call us. Christmas giving is particularly hard for our group if the giftee has aged gracefully and is called Meemaw, Pawpaw, Bombom, Nanna, Poppop, Dandan, Deedee, or the

traditional Granddaddy, which is how my grandchildren refer to me. I will be 75 this Christmas. What the hell can I get that I have not already gotten or rejected? By the time the December edition of Limitless hits the stands, the question of what-do-you-want-for-Christmas will have

been asked numerous times. Still, as I write this in early November, I don’t know what my answer will be this year. So for December in History, I am focusing on unique Christmas gifts of the last 75 years and some suggestions for the faithful readers of Limitless.

SUGGESTIONS FOR GIFT GIVING THIS SEASON. According to Southern Living’s

5. Barefoot Dreams Throw Blanket. 6. Eufy RoboVac (actually, this was #10, and I moved it as #6-9 were too silly to consider!).

1. Eufy RobotVac by Anker. 2. A #10 Cast Iron Skillet by Smithey Ironware Co. 3. Tea Drop Sampler from Amazon. Just drop one in your cup. No steeping teabags required. 4. Shutterfly Photo Puzzle of the grandkids. 5. Matching aprons for Grandma and Grandkid. 6. Marble Tic-Tac-Toe Game Set.

Better, but what is this with the cast iron skillet craze? I can attest to the usefulness of The Eufy RobVac. The AirPods Pro is a stylish gift, especially if the giftee has an iPhone or other Apple device.

“The Best Christmas Gift Ideas for Grandparents.”

Really? After #2, it seems the Southern Living folks got into the Scotch under the desk! Speaking of which, a fine bottle of single malt would come in at least at #2 on my list!

From USA Today’s

“The 40 best gifts everyone is buying in 2020.” 1. Roku Streaming Stick. 2. 12-inch Lodge Cast Iron Skillet. 3. Disney + Streaming subscription. 4. Apple AirPods Pro.

From Mickey Dunaway No paid endorsements here, just suggestions based on experience, Google research on gift-giving, and I hope some commonsense.

1. Year’s (or a month’s) supply of Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Beans. Great beans make all the difference. No Keurig can compete, nor can Starbucks. 2. OXO Brew Coffee Grinder and a decent drip coffeemaker that heats the water to 190 degrees each time. After great beans, grinding the beans correctly every time is the best insurance of a great cup of coffee, even in an average drip coffeemaker. And don’t spend an outrageous amount on

a coffee maker. You can find very good ones for a little more than $100 from Braun or KitchenAid at Amazon. 3. Apple AirPods Pro, especially for people who at least have an iPhone! The new generation of earbuds is remarkably comfortable, great at reproducing sound or blocking out noise wherever you may be—in an airplane or on your pillow. 4. An all-paid (reasonably priced) weeklong getaway. I am not yet comfortable with cruises, but in the future, this would be a great-getawaygift. 5. The Anker Eufy RoboVac or Eufy Vac/ Mop is a remarkable gift. Just make sure the Robo-vac has maximum sucking power. Many other brands are as good as the Eufy but are usually more expensive. 6. Turntable and speakers to play those LPs you still have in the attic. This was my last year’s Christmas “ask for,” and I am still pleased with it and enjoying looking for LPs at yard sales and antique shops. LimitlessMagOnline.com | December 2021 45

combination of Golden Promise malt, our preferred clean house yeast, and noble hops, this blonde ale is designed to be easy-drinking, crisp and refreshing. After the beer is fermented dry, we added ginger and chai to help bring us all into the holiday season.

For some background, winter wing is based on original blonde ale called Little Wing, which was on tap on opening day and was one of Matt’s homebrews that became a stable at King Canary, and now we continue that tradition by doing seasonal variants to accompany the season.

Cash Flow Lessons in Retirement

L

et me start by saying this: You don’t want to learn any hard lessons in retirement about cash flow. I was witness to and experienced economic hardships like most everyone else did in 2008 and 2009. At the time, I owned a whole lot of non-income producing real estate (land) and the weight of that alone was less than pleasant. When entering into your retirement/financial independence years, remember this: cash flow matters. I say that to emphasize the fact that illiquid assets on a balance sheet that are non-income producing matter very little when you NEED cash flow. I personally knew more than one person that was worth tens of millions of dollars that had a difficult time even paying for food and gas during the last financial crisis. It sounds like I’m embellishing but sadly, I am not. While crafting your retirement plan, make sure that you have adequate “basic needs” income that likely will not go away even in the most treacherous of financial storms. It will serve you well. I refer to this as Tier 1 income. It’s the income that HAS to be there. The next chunk of income is more discretionary and can be increased or decreased at will to accommodate periods of decreased or increased spending. I refer to this as Tier 2 income. I have an entire presentation that I give to prospective clients about identifying the proper sources for different types of income. It’s THAT important.

Major Transitions –

Selling Your Family Home

S

ignificant changes, like moving, are always tricky, regardless of age. As we get older, we may feel “forced” into moving because we are dealing with more than one stressful situation, such as changes in health, the loss of a spouse, or the movements of adult children. Yes, change is difficult, and there is comfort in the familiar. But sometimes the familiar becomes problematic, and change is required to make life better. Consider the bright side of making a change: Fewer Responsibilities All the things you had to care for or hire done will no longer fall on your shoulders! A smaller living space means less maintenance, less cleaning, and less effort. Yay! More Time to Call Your Own Your to-do list will get significantly shorter the moment you move into your new location. Have you wanted to have more time to read? To watch movies? To travel? To make new friends or spend more time with the old ones? You’ve got it! A Clean Slate It’s not often you can “recreate” yourself in life. Do you want to ditch old hobbies and pick up something new? Do you want to dress differently or change your hair? A new location means a unique opportunity to define who you are now, instead of the person others expect you to be. Cut loose! An Excellent Excuse to Jettison Stuff You may have to part with some things you like, but you also get to walk away from all the things you don’t. No more guilty feelings about tossing a gift you never really liked. You can stop providing the family’s storage unit. You can keep what you adore and pitch with abandon because you “just won’t have room at the new place.” Sure, moving to a new home after so many years in this one is challenging. But, if you take charge and call the shots about how it gets done, this is more than a move—it’s an opportunity. Don’t shy away from deciding how the next chapter of your life will play out. It’s your story. Make it an enjoyable, personal, and colorful one!

Let’s Count our Blessings… and our Stuff?

W

ith the holidays here, many of you are having fun decorating, excited to spend quality time with family and friends (furry friends too!), planning your menus, and counting your “stuff”… Wait. What? For empty nesters and boomers who are still entertaining in the family home, and haven’t had a garage sale or donated to a local charity recently, this is a great time to take stock of your holiday “stuff”. Why? Because you are going to have to do it sometime, (unless you are planning on living forever). Otherwise, you’ll have to have family or friends do it for you or you may even have to PAY someone to do it, and really nobody wants to do that. If, for example, you can’t decide which out of multiple sets of holiday formal tableware you want to use, then this is the time to consider scaling down to just a set or two that are special to you and your family. Consider taking pictures of each set and inventory how many pieces you have of each pattern. Share that information with your loved ones who may find meaning in using it because of the fond memories attached to it. If you would rather sell your items, simply share the photos with a reputable consignment shop or auctioneer for consideration. Whatever you decide, there is no time like the present to count our blessings….and our stuff!

Power Aging Part II

B

uilding on the theme of power aging from last month that exercise, mental stimulation, and healthy eating are the critical components to longevity, let’s enhance your way of thinking around 2022 New Year’s resolutions. Action without thought behind it is never a strategic move. Doing nothing is not good either. So, how do you get past analysis paralysis or inaction? Let’s assume one of your “Dream it” goals is a longer, healthier life. Moving on to the “Plan it” phase starts with knowing what your 2022 positive measurable desired outcomes will be to realize your longevity impact. The challenge begins when you seek out expert opinions. For example, I was reading an article with a title “Top 5 Longevity Foods to Postpone Aging.” It was interesting and well written. The problem? All five foods started with the letter “B.” While clever, perhaps to help one remember, are there not other great foods that could help with aging, just did not have a “B” at the beginning? I found the same challenge with exercise articles I reviewed. One focused on muscle density. Another focused on stretching and yoga and yet another on cardio. The last article had a different routine, which only needed 2-3 days a week. Each expert believes they have the right solution. They may, but does that mean the others are wrong? Lastly, mental and emotional health, I believe, is very individual, meaning that the only expert is you in knowing what makes you happy and creates less stress in your life. Since financial stress is usually found at the top of most lists, create your 2022 financial resolutions based on a couple of reality check points. First, no one knows how much time we have in life. Second, the stock market direction should not be what determines how you enjoy your life. Your resolution action? What can you get excited about? Instead of waiting or speculating, reset your goals for 2022 within your core financial plan, adjust monthly income distribution needs, and give yourself permission to “Pursue it” NOW in what will help you create a life well lived.
