Madi Navarro Editor-in-Chief Madi would like to thank the entire team for all their hard work in creating The Local’s Guide Books! Jessica, Skylar and Holly worked tirelessly to create this year’s edition. She would also like the thank photographers Deborah and Cher for the beautiful images you see throughout. She is very excited for the community to finally see the finished product. Madi lives in Augusta, Georgia with her husband, John, and their pets, Cookie and Olive. She went to Augusta University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Public Relations. Upon graduating from college in 2015 she moved back to Cumming, Georgia, where she had grown up and was hired as an event planner. In 2018, after a year of long-distance dating and wanting her weekends back Madi packed up a U-Haul and moved back to Augusta. Coming on board with Lake Oconee Life was serendipitous. After her position at the time was eliminated Madi began helping with the first edition of the Lake Oconee Life: The Local’s Guide Book and has not stopped since. Being raised by a mother who was self-employed, she saw first hand how important small businesses are and how pivotal they are to both families and the community at large. She loves promoting local businesses and events to the Lake Oconee community and looks forward to the growth and impact of Lake Oconee Life.

Jessica Gratigny Copywriter and Lead Photographer Jessica joined the Lake Oconee Life team in 2020 as a contributing photographer for the second edition of the Lake Oconee Life: The Local’s Guide Book. Over the past two years, Jessica has enjoyed meeting the wonderful people in the Lake Oconee area. Her favorite part about the job is getting to support the incredible businesses that make the community so unique. Outside of Lake Oconee Life, Jessica is a professional lifestyle photographer dedicated to turning her clients’ important milestones into cherished keepsakes. While growing up in Macon, Jessica dabbled in photographing graduation portraits for her friends and assisting wedding photographers. When she graduated high school, she turned her childhood dream into a career by establishing Jessica Gratigny Photography in 2017. Her clientele now spans throughout Athens, Lake Oconee, Lake Sinclair, Middle Georgia and the surrounding areas as she shoots portraits, weddings, events, commercial work and everything in between. Mark and Jenifer Hardee always knew they wanted to open a provisions store. Then, one day when they came across a free-standing building with a “country store” sign and topped with a red rooster they knew they’d found it! Carey Station Provisions has found it’s home! The Hardees have over 30 years in the restaurant business and understand that excellent customer service, quality products, and value are essential.

What started as a dream of a specialty store eventually grew into a small cafe with cooked to order foods and pre-packaged take out. Inside the store are a handful of dine in seats, but most locals call ahead to place pick-up orders. Mark and Jenifer are loving their provisions store and look forward to what the future holds for them. Someday they would like to host live music, wine tastings and special events. The inventory changes often and they focus on local, Georgia grown products whenever they can. Since opening in 2020 they have so enjoyed meeting the local residents, tourists, campers and hearing their stories.

Joy Kuper, the owner of Sweet Kneads Bakery and Cafe, comes from a long line of entrepreneurial women with a passion for hospitality. Her mother, Brenda McSweeney originally opened Sweet Kneads in February 2002 after running a successful baking and catering business in Connecticut. The cafe is home to many delicious dishes including an award-winning quiche, bagels delivered from New York City and pepperoni bread.

But Sweet Kneads isn’t just about the savory. As you could guess from the name, this bakery specializes in delectably sweet treats to eat on-site or box up to enjoy at home. They’re famous for their amazing chicken salad as well—they sell at least 400 pounds in a normal week! They also dish up fantastic soups, sandwiches, salads, and all-day breakfast, every bit of it “locally sourced and crafted with love.” Sweet Kneads is also about family and community. Owner Michael Hubbard purchased Classic City Nutrition in Athens in November 2019. The Lake Oconee Food & Wine Festival held at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee is three fun-filled and delicious days. Located in the heart of Madison, Georgia’s historic district, the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is a non-profit organization that is home to both a history museum and a visual and performing arts facility. The building’s history dates all the way back to 1895 and served as one of the first graded schools until 1957, meaning that it allowed students to have separate classrooms for each of the grade levels. The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center models history both inside and out. Their

permanent exhibits include the 1895 Schoolroom Exhibition allowing visitors to view original desks, blackboards, and other accessories, and the Arts and Crafts Gallery includes pottery, lamps, metalware, and other pieces from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In addition, the Piedmont History Museum provides an inside look at the development of the area including how it came to be and the typical lifestyle of many individuals. Come and see the 1875 Winship and Brother Cotton Gin that represents the significance of cotton in the South. The seed for Oconee Brewing Company was planted when John and Nathan McGarity heard a friend comment that Greensboro, Georgia would be a great location for a craft brewery. The father and son real estate team immediately saw the potential in the idea. OBC opened on May 6, 2017, after John and Nathan McGarity teamed up with partner Taylor Lamm. Together they transformed an 11,000

square foot, former cotton mill warehouse into a retail production facility with a tasting room that’s open to the public, and a unique event space that works perfectly for any occasion. Voted “best special event venue” in the 2018 Lake Oconee Living Readers’ Choice Awards, Oconee Brewing Company is a quality craft brewery with a stunning 3,600 square foot event space that looks out onto a party patio through an 18-foot high, floor to ceiling glass wall. Kiersten Tuel started Oconee Wild Watersports in 2012 after working for her dad’s business, Jet Ski Terry’s for four years. He was ready to get out, but she was ready to dive in! With the help of her business partner, they purchased four new Yamaha WaveRunners and a pontoon boat to get started. Initially, Kiersten would deliver rentals to customers herself, a service that was exclusive to her, and was more than happy to do.

With her growing business, she needed a permanent location and signed a lease in April 2013. They then added kayak and paddle board rentals as well. Over the years Oconee Wild Watersports has experienced tremendous growth, in no small part to their value on service and making sure each customer has the best experience possible. The staff works tirelessly to ensure the equipment is the best they can possibly provide. Customers can choose to rent from pontoons, kayaks, paddle boards and Jet Skis as well as wakeboards, tubes, water skis, Chaparral Ski Boat, Sea Pro Citation deck boat, and Elite Tritoons with 200hp or 250hp. They still offer delivery service, which many had come to love. They also upgrade their fleet every two years and provide captains for their boats. Too busy to stop in?
