Holly Lindsey Founder I envisioned creating a print version of Lake Sinclair Life: The Local’s Guide right after we launched Lake Oconee Life’s book in January of 2020. The following month we began introducing the Lake Sinclair community to both our website and a vision of what the Lake Sinclair Life: The Local’s Guide Book would look like. With an expected launch date of July 2020 we were excited! As you remember, we didn’t get very far into the process before we were all quarantined in March. I knew in my heart we needed to shelf the book for 2020 and start again for a 2021 edition. It has been difficult to watch the impact that COVID-19 has had on our local business community. As residents of Lake Sinclair, my family and I work to support the people behind these businesses, the ones that are driving our local economy, attracting new residents and serving the existing community. The pandemic did have a silver lining though, Lake Sinclair experienced rapid growth this year and we are proud to educate newcomers, visitors, and of course, locals on places to eat, things to do, and companies to call on for services. It is the local business owners and their teams that tapped into creative and unique ways to power our economy through such trying times. A huge thank you to all of the participants in our inaugural edition of Lake Sinclair Life: The Local’s Guide Book. Flipping through you will see many familiar faces and businesses, as well as some that are new to the Lake Sinclair area. Old or new, we are proud to introduce you to the people who make up Lake Sinclair. I would like to thank my family for all their love and support during this project. Madi, my daughter and our very talented Editor-in-Cheif, did an amazing job creating this book with the help of our three incredible photographers.
Madi Navarro Editor-in-Chief Madi lives in Augusta, Georgia with her husband, John, and their fur babies, Abby and Olive. She went to Augusta University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Public Relations. Upon graduating from college in 2015 she moved back to Cumming, Georgia, where she had grown up and was hired as an event planner. In 2018, after a year of long-distance dating and wanting her weekends back Madi packed up a U-Haul and moved back to Augusta. Coming on board with Lake Sinclair Life was serendipitous. After her position at the time was eliminated Madi began helping with the first edition of the Lake Oconee Life: The Local’s Guide Book and has not stopped since. Being raised by a mother who was self-employed, she saw first hand how important small businesses are and how pivotal they are to both families and the community at large. She loves promoting local businesses and events to the Lake Sinclair community and looks forward to the growth and impact of Lake Sinclair Life.

Excitement and relief filled the community when the Lake Oconee Bistro sign was erected outside The Magnolia House. The beautiful establishment that had sat empty since 2010 was once again going to have a resident. Thankfully Gary Sofen and his team share a love for the lake community, a passion for delicious food, and creating a space for families and friends to spend time together. Thus launching, the Lake Oconee Bistro. Their motto at the Lake Oconee Bistro is “Live, Love, Lake” and they deliver on that! The weekend kicks off with Fun Fridays which include live music from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Saturday Ladies Night complete with a DJ from 9:00pm to midnight, both nights feature a Happy Hour and late night menu from 10:00pm to midnight. Then relax with weekend brunch offered every Saturday & Sunday starting at 11:00 am. Step into the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and enjoy one of their appetizing creations like the Bistro Bang Shrimp, Tuna Nachos or Stuffed Potato Tots. Grab a seat at the bar and sip on one of the many libations from their curated wine list or one of the 28 draft and craft beers on tap. The LO Bistro also boasts a private event venue named The Magnolia Room. It is the perfect spot for events up to 60 people. Gary is a restaurant veteran and understands what patrons are looking for when dining out. He strives to offer high-quality food, a fun, comfortable atmosphere, and overall a restaurant that’s worthy of taking a night off of cooking.

When Brenda McSweeney and her husband Jack retired to Greensboro, Georgia in the late 90s, Jack was more than ready to enjoy his retirement. Meanwhile, Brenda wasn’t quite ready. She had run a successful specialty baking and catering business in Connecticut for years, and after recognizing that there wasn’t a business quite like hers in the Lake Oconee area at that time, she got excited at the idea of sharing her special recipes with this warm, welcoming community. She soon found the perfect location at 103 Clack Circle in Eatonton, and opened the doors of Sweet Kneads Bakery & Café in February 2002. The cafe’s award-winning quiche was an instant success in a community that wasn’t entirely familiar with the dish—in fact, some of her customers admitted they hadn’t known what quiche was before Sweet Kneads opened. But Sweet Kneads isn’t just about the quiche. As you could guess from the name, this bakery specializes in delectably sweet treats to eat on-site or box up to enjoy at home. They’re famous for their amazing chicken salad as well—they sell at least 300 pounds in a normal week! They also dish up fantastic soups, sandwiches, salads, and all-day breakfast, every bit of it “locally sourced and crafted with love.”

Although H2O Adventures is officially in the business of renting pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, paddle boards, and deck boats, a cornerstone of their working philosophy is educating customers about water safety. When H2O staff deliver rentals to clients at Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair boat ramps, the staff members make sure to thoroughly demonstrate how the watercraft operates, and anything the customer needs to know to have a safe day of fun on the lake. H2O Adventures wants to see customers are comfortable with every last switch and button before they operate their rental without supervision. Rental rates and times can be found on the H2O Adventures website, but the staff is always flexible and happy to work with clients on what they need out of a concern for both customer satisfaction and safety. That’s why customers can choose from multiple rental ranges, from full eight-hour days, to half-days, multi-days, or even hourly rentals. Whatever suits the client best. Before heading out on the lake customers can stop into their full-service marine store stocked with lake activity shirts, hats, water bottles and boat maintenance supplies. First responders, military, and police always receive a ten percent discount on all available rentals.

In 1965, E.J. Grassmann, an amateur horticulturalist and self-taught naturalist, founded Lockerly Arboretum in Milledgeville, Georgia. Today, Lockerly continues to honor this gift by keeping the Arboretum free and open to the public. On 50 beautiful acres, this nonprofit establishment provides a serene environment for the appreciation of nature. As a Level II Accredited Arboretum, Lockerly has established the Woods museum, which features a 301-year-old section of bald cypress and a variety of State Champion trees. Along with 50 acres of stunning gardens, a pond, and multiple walking trails, there is a one mile nature trail that shows off a stunning array of flora. Lockerly Arboretum is also home to Rose Hill, an 1852 Greek Revival mansion that has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2017. Lockerly’s educational programs include workshops for all ages, as well as programs for adults with intellectual disabilities from Baldwin County’s Life Enrichment Center. All student programs comply with requirements for Eagle Scout badges, Georgia Performance Standards, and Master Gardener certifications. Over 5,000 students studying soil science, water ecology, biology, and more are served annually, both on site and at a 200-acre tract of land in Putnam County called the Oliver N. Worley Outdoor Education Center. Today and into the future, Lockerly Arboretum will persist in its mission to inspire an appreciation and understanding of nature, horticulture, and heritage.

Six years ago, Stacey Davis retired from Corporate America, anxious to do something she would enjoy and that would make people happy. After trying out a variety of projects, she recognized that she both enjoyed embroidery, and was quite good at it. Even before deciding to go professional with Love to Letter, she bought a small, single needle embroidery machine to speed up her projects, but she soon realized that she wanted the capability to do even more, so she upgraded. She now has two 10-needle commercial machines. Stacey operates out of her home studio where she spends her days making custom orders from her Etsy shop, Facebook page and gift items for stores like Eclectic and H2O Watersports. She is well stocked on popular items such as tote bags, hats, beach and kitchen towels and more. Over the years, Staey has built a library complete with thousands of embroidery designs and fonts to ensure that her clients love their orders. Her passion for her business is fueled by the joy she feels from creating things that make people smile.

Not many people can say that they turned a summer job into a 30-year long career and counting. Mike Prosperi did exactly that. In 1993 Mike started Bug House Pest Control and then in 1996, purchased Mitchell Pest Control from Bob and Dennis Mitchell. Milledgeville was a small town that was quickly growing and was the perfect environment to start a business. Bug House started small with just one location and only one employee. With over 25 years of growth and success, they now have over 16 locations throughout Georgia and employ over 150 people. They also service South Carolina and Alabama. Their team is made up of skilled individuals. Protecting their customers’ homes is one of their top priorities. At Bug House, it is their goal to treat every customer as if he or she were family. Every service they provide is tailored to fit each customer’s needs. When faced with an obstacle they choose to look for the opportunity behind it, as opposed to focusing on the negative. Bug House’s mission is to be a premier provider for home services in the Southeast. This means constant training and education for their staff, along with expanding services.

Founded by Joseph Hinton, Hinton Construction, LLC is a boutique-style construction business, fueled by old fashioned quality, generations of experience, and a lot of elbow grease. Joseph enlisted in the Army at eighteen, but after nine and a half years of service, he had to leave active duty due to a parachute accident. Being third-generation in a construction family, Joseph grew up in the industry, working on site since he was nine years old. So, when it was time for him to find a new career, it was only natural that he should follow in his family’s footsteps by deciding to own and operate his own construction company. Hinton Construction, LLC specializes in decks, docks, retaining walls, and carpentry work, but they have expertise in all areas of construction and are also available to install or repair siding, for remodeling jobs, to build garages and carports, and even roof replacement or repair. No matter the job at hand, Joseph makes sure that every customer ends up with the highest value and quality by being right there on site himself. Joseph Hinton and his team never fail to demonstrate that hard work, dedication, and craftsmanship is still alive and well in middle Georgia.

Freelance photographer and Georgia native Jessica Gratigny fell in love with photography as a very young girl, fascinated by how it allows you to hold onto memories. As she grew older, she began to appreciate the ways that photography can connect you with other people in your community. It was a natural progression for her early fascination to become a hobby, and then a study, and now, her vocation.
