Madi Navarro Editor-in-Chief Madi lives in Augusta, Georgia with her husband, John, and their fur babies, Abby and Olive. She went to Augusta University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Public Relations. Upon graduating from college in 2015 she moved back to Cumming, Georgia, where she had grown up and was hired as an event planner. In 2018, after a year of long-distance dating and wanting her weekends back Madi packed up a U-Haul and moved back to Augusta. Coming on board with Lake Oconee Life was serendipitous. After her position at the time was eliminated Madi began helping with the first edition of the Lake Oconee Life: The Local’s Guide Book and has not stopped since. Being raised by a mother who was self-employed, she saw first hand how important small businesses are and how pivotal they are to both families and the community at large. She loves promoting local businesses and events to the Lake Oconee community and looks forward to the growth and impact of Lake Oconee Life.

Mark and Jenifer Hardee always knew they wanted to open a provisions store. Then, one day when they came across a free-standing building with a “country store” sign and topped with a red rooster they knew they’d found it! Carey Station Provisions has found it’s home! The Hardees have over 30 years in the restaurant business and understand that excellent customer service, quality products, and value are essential. What started as a dream of a specialty store eventually grew into a small cafe with cooked to order foods and pre-packaged take out. Inside the store are a handful of dine in seats, but most locals call ahead to place pick-up orders. Mark and Jenifer are loving their provisions store and look forward to what the future holds for them. Someday they would like to host live music, wine tastings and special events. The inventory changes often and they focus on local, Georgia grown products whenever they can. Since opening in 2020 they have so enjoyed meeting the local residents, tourists, campers and hearing their stories.

Deborah Johnson, a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, specializes in French cuisine and culture. After nearly 20 years in France, Deborah moved to Georgia to be close to her parents and family. During a visit to Lake Oconee in 2010, she fell in love with the area and eventually bought her lakefront cottage in 2017. After seven years as a traveling corporate chef, Deborah now dedicates her time to new business ventures. Chez Vous, which means “at home” in French, is her personal chef service. She prepares restaurant quality food for you in your own home, and offers catering and culinary classes as well. Food boards, however, are her specialty and can be ordered and delivered to homes or boats. Macarons by Deborah is her passion! She creates made from scratch, small-batch and authentic French macarons which can be ordered special for weddings and events or found at Lalore Cafe.

Owner Alex Davidson started Georgia Butts BBQ in a modest trailer, but thanks to the power of fantastic barbecue, he has since grown the business into a full-service restaurant and bar overlooking Lake Oconee. Excitement and relief filled the community when the Lake Oconee Bistro sign was erected outside The Magnolia House. The beautiful establishment that had sat empty since 2010 was once again going to have a resident. Thankfully Gary Sofen and his team share a love for the lake community, a passion for delicious food, and creating a space for families and friends to spend time together. Thus launching, the Lake Oconee Bistro. Their motto at the Lake Oconee Bistro is “Live, Love, Lake” and they deliver on that! The weekend kicks off with Fun Fridays which include live music from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Saturday Ladies Night complete with a DJ from 9:00pm to midnight, both nights feature a Happy Hour and late night menu from 10:00pm to midnight. Then relax with weekend brunch offered every Saturday and Sunday starting at 11:00 am. Step into the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and enjoy one of their appetizing creations like the Bistro Bang Shrimp, Tuna Nachos or Stuffed Potato Tots. Celebrity Cake Designer Reva Alexander-Hawk has traveled from San Francisco’s renowned California Culinary Academy, to the bright lights of Hollywood, and finally landed here in Eatonton, where the people of Georgia’s Lake Country have the extreme good fortune to get up close and personal with Merci Beaucoup, her cake and pastry business, which she launched in 2002. Soon Reva had established a glowing reputation as a high-end cake decorator in California and beyond. Her skills in the sugar arts won her three seasons appearing on the television show “Amazing Wedding Cakes,” an opportunity which gave her the chance to share her talent with the public, and become a trusted name within the cake community. Reva loves to make people smile, and this personality emerges in her fun, whimsical style of cake decorating. She has happily spread smiles to customers all across the states and now abroad. When Brenda McSweeney and her husband Jack retired to Greensboro, Georgia in the late 90s, Jack was more than ready to enjoy his retirement. Meanwhile, Brenda wasn’t quite ready. She had run a successful specialty baking and catering business in Connecticut for years, and after recognizing that there wasn’t a business quite like hers in the Lake Oconee area at that time, she got excited at the idea of sharing her special recipes with this warm, welcoming community. She soon found the perfect location at 103 Clack Circle in Eatonton, and opened the doors of Sweet Kneads Bakery & Café in February 2002. The cafe’s award-winning quiche was an instant success in a community that wasn’t entirely familiar with the dish—in fact, some of her customers admitted they hadn’t known what quiche was before Sweet Kneads opened. But Sweet Kneads isn’t just about the quiche. As you could guess from the name, this bakery specializes in delectably sweet treats to eat on-site or box up to enjoy at home. They’re famous for their amazing chicken salad as well—they sell at least 300 pounds in a normal week! Owner Michael Hubbard was living in Jefferson, Georgia when he began noticing images of loaded teas on his Facebook feed. Intrigued, he decided to go to Classic City Nutrition in Athens, where he ordered the Mermaid tea and a Fruity Pebbles shake. He enjoyed both so much, he asked the owner if he needed an investor in the business. The owner said no to investing, but volunteered to show Michael how to start his own business. Things went so well that Michael purchased Classic City Nutrition from the owner in November 2019. Soon after that, Michael noticed that Lake Oconee didn’t have anything quite like his business, so he decided to open a second location on August 25th, 2020. Two Rivers Nutrition, located in Harmony Crossing, sells specialty drinks with high protein and vitamins, sugar-free teas, dairy-free protein shakes, and “beauty drinks” that include collagen and biotin: two ingredients that promote healthy skin, hair, and nails. The drinks offer serious beauty, health, and wellness benefits, plus taste delicious. Michael is so glad to be bringing something new to this great community—he even chose the name in honor of the Eatonton location’s history. “Two Rivers” references the Apalachee and Oconee Rivers which feed Lake Oconee. His favorite part about running his shop is getting to help people and see them smile.

The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to serving the evolving needs of our local community through professional development, networking opportunities, fundraising events, and community and economic development. Although H2O Adventures is officially in the business of renting pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, paddle boards, and deck boats, a cornerstone of their working philosophy is educating customers about water safety. When H2O staff deliver rentals to clients at Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair boat ramps, the staff members make sure to thoroughly demonstrate how the watercraft operates, and anything the customer needs to know to have a safe day of fun on the lake. The Lake Oconee Food & Wine Festival held at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee is three fun-filled and delicious days. This annual festival gets better each year, and not just because of the amazing culinary talents and premium wines featured, or the exciting mix of visual artists, entertainers, or the ever-expanding list of events, but because of the profound difference this festival makes in the lives of young people in the Lake Oconee area. The seed for Oconee Brewing Company was planted when John and Nathan McGarity heard a friend comment that Greensboro, Georgia would be a great location for a craft brewery. The father and son real estate team immediately saw the potential in the idea. OBC opened on May 6, 2017, after John and Nathan McGarity teamed up with partner Taylor Lamm. Together they transformed an 11,000 square foot, former cotton mill warehouse into a retail production facility with a tasting room that’s open to the public, and a unique event space that works perfectly for any occasion. Kiersten Tuel started Oconee Wild Watersports in 2012 after working for her dad’s business, Jet Ski Terry’s for four years. He was ready to get out, but she was ready to dive in! With the help of her business partner, they purchased four new Yamaha WaveRunners and a pontoon boat to get started. Initially, Kiersten would deliver rentals to customers herself, a service that was exclusive to her, and was more than happy to do. With her growing business, she needed a permanent location and signed a lease in April 2013. They then added kayak and paddle board rentals as well. Over the years Oconee Wild Watersports has experienced tremendous growth, in no small part to their value on service and making sure each customer has the best experience possible. The staff works tirelessly to ensure the equipment is the best they can possibly provide. Customers can choose to rent from pontoons, kayaks, paddle boards and Jet Skis as well as wakeboards, tubes, water skis, Chaparral Ski Boat, HeyDay Wakeboard Boat, and Elite Tritoons with 200hp or 250hp. Freelance photographer and Georgia native Jessica Gratigny fell in love with photography as a very young girl, fascinated by how it allows you to hold onto memories. As she grew older, she began to appreciate the ways that photography can connect you with other people in your community. It was a natural progression for her early fascination to become a hobby, and then a study, and now, her vocation. The mission of Gatewood Schools, Inc. is to provide the best education available in a nurturing, Christian environment while instilling life-long characteristics of faith, honor, truth and loyalty. They accomplish this mission by providing opportunities and an environment which fosters the growth of well-rounded young men and women and prepares them for college and beyond. Their focus extends beyond potential test scores to ensure that every student receives what they need academically. For example, they assist dyslexic children with phonetic awareness using the Barton Reading Discipline program and use Layla the Therapy Dog to build confidence in early readers. Gatewood offers 14 varsity sports and boasts 47 state championships in 50 years of operation. Their graduates excel anywhere they go, and can be found in 23 states and five countries. The school’s administration stated that they “believe that every child is a gift from God, and the core of our education is faith first, academics, athletics and extracurricular activities to complete that child’s edification.” All of this takes place in a small town in Georgia with a population of 6,597.
