Happy birthday, Smith Mountain Lake! So much has changed since the early farming communities in Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties gave way to the construction of the dam and the creation of the lake. The region has been built into a thriving residential and business location, coming together for civic and social activities and celebrating itself as one of Virginia’s best tourist destinations.

Fitness instructors offer tips to stay motivated with resolutions Fitness goals should be realistic, attainable and long-term, not something made on a whim.

fitness instructors agree that getting started is the easy part — staying motivated is the biggest challenge. “The hardest thing is actually committing to a plan and putting it into action,” said Carlton By Karen Dillon Weatherford, a certified strength karen.dillon@ and conditioning coach and forsmithmountainlaker.com mer Virginia Tech starting full721-4675 (ext. 407) back. A person’s goals should be realistic and attainable, he added. Instead of using a total amount of weight a person would like to lose, Weatherford advised setting a goal of losing two to five pounds per month. “That way you don’t feel defeated if you don’t make your goal right away,” he said. With the air temperature hovering around 43 degrees with blustery winds coming off the lake at a home near Scruggs, eight members of the Smith Mountain Lake Waterski Club volunteered to ski, wakeboard or jump in the lake for the annual Polar Bear Ski Day. Hanging out on a dock beforehand, members recalled years where there were spring-like conditions as well as years that included ice and snow. Libby Jamison, 12, who was the youngest member to ski this year remarked that the water “wasn’t that bad.” Ashley Cooper, who was driving the boat, estimated the water temperature to be around 57 degrees, which is considered warm for this time of year.

Members of the SML model railroad group, who helped organize and host the eighth annual Charity Chug fundraiser Dec. 5 and 6, visited Lake Christian Ministries to drop off proceeds totaling more than $3,700.

The love of model trains brought in some much needed cash to an area charity at Christmas. Charity Chug is an annual event that takes place the first week in December. This year, nine members of the Smith Mountain Lake Model Railroad Group opened their homes so train enthusiasts could view their elaborate model train displays. The displays came in all sizes from the smallest gauge of model railroads, the Z-gauge, at Ken Salley’s Scruggs home to a G-gauge outdoor display at Hans Weidig’s home in Wirtz. Weidig’s “Gills Creek Rail Road” wound over trestles and through forests of live landscaping and buildings such as a saw mill, farms and cabins. “Visitors to the 2015 Charity Chug donated

his year, many Smith Mountain Lake residents and visitors will photograph beautiful sunrises and sunsets across the lake. They may also spend hours in quiet coves, hoping to lure legendary catfish the size of full-grown men to their fishing line. And anyone sitting alongside the lake long enough is sure to catch sight of the local “She Doos” as they jet by in a flash of neon green. But people at SML would find it difficult to locate many who remember this landscape and what it offered, before March 7, 1966 — before there even was a lake.

PoPulation

dON pETErSEN

Residents living in Franklin, Bedford and Pittsylvania counties before 1960 would most likely look around today and tell you that the population has definitely increased. Census numbers also reflect an increase of residents living in these three counties over the past 50 years. It is much harder, though, to pinpoint this growth around Smith Mountain Lake, specifically. The 1960 census shows that the population between Franklin, Bedford and Pittsylvania counties were collectively 115,249. As of 2014, those numbers had increased to 195,324 — a difference of 80,075. Barb Nocera, special projects manager with the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, revealed that there are 21,000 residents on or around the lake. Nocera also shared that 12,000 of these residents live here full time.

From the landscape to the people to the business community, Smith Mountain Lake shows little resemblance to what it was 50 years ago. The completion of Smith Mountain Lake, which reached full pond at 5:03 a.m. March 7, 1966, changed this slice of Virginia forever.

Major industries in the counties adjoining the lake have shifted more than a little in the past 50 years. In the 1960s this area capitalized on farming — mainly tobacco. Once the dam had been built and the lake had filled up, tourism began to gain momentum. Eagle’s Roost Campground, Bernard’s Landing, Mitchell’s Marina and Smith Mountain Dock and Lodge are some of the longest running lake-related businesses. The Hales Ford Bridge is the main artery between Bedford and Franklin counties. The current bridge, shown above, replaced a smaller bridge spanning the Roanoke River, which was submerged when the dam was completed. campgrounds around Smith Mountain Lake, there are hundreds of homes and condos available for rent. And for those interested in the full lake experience, there are house boats for rent as well. Day-trippers may find the lake easy to access through one of the public beaches at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park in Franklin County or SML State Park in Bedford County. For those interested in a day on the lake, there are several marinas with boat rentals as well. A few of the earliest tourism dollars also came from boat builders and boat dealerships, but they were small operations, according to newspaper stories of the time. Del. Charles Poindexter, R-Franklin County, remembers to 1961 when his father built a business off Virginia 40 in Rocky Mount servicing the construction vehicles used to build the dam. Poindexter also reminisced about one of the first marinas built, at the bridge on Virginia 834 over the Blackwater River. “The marina at the bridge got off to a roaring start and then went out of business … about six years later,” he said. There was a time, during the first few years that the lake had been formed, when people could water ski under this bridge, he added. 20 March • April 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Long-time lake resident Claude Scott was in second grade when talk of Smith Mountain Lake began in the late 1950s. From the start, Scott and his friends wasted no time dreaming of what it would be like to live near a lake and to own a boat. “No one knew anything about living near the water,” Scott said. “When we found out about the lake, we would walk around with a piece of paper, writing down our friends’ names that we would let ride our boats, which were imaginary, you know.” When SML had just filled to capacity, Scott remembers the motor boats navigating between the tallest pine trees, which still poked out of the water near Hales Ford Bridge. But most of all, he

remembers how the houses and property values changed overnight. The houses began simple enough; shacks, adapted year-round campers, and small cabins frequented the lake’s shorelines. It wasn’t long, though, before building began, and the value of the land, and size of the houses increased steadily and quickly. Scott explained, “Local people couldn’t afford it [a house on the lake], but people up north could.” Poindexter agreed that the relationship between those living at the lake, and those living close by, has been strained over the years. Poindexter explained that the lake community has worked to improve this relationship, supporting the school systems and people living just a few miles away. “The lake has become a major economic contributor,” Poindexter said. “The Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce has set up an office in Rocky Mount. Sixty percent of the county’s [Franklin County] revenue comes from the lake.” Poindexter added, “It’s coming along but it will take a couple more decades to become a cohesive county.”

Notoriety

Many residents would consider Smith Mountain Lake to be Virginia’s best kept secret. Over the years people have realized that you can’t hide 32-square miles of liquid fun for long. Whether it’s fishing, vacationing or film-making, this lake has found its way to make a name for itself over the years. In 1963, when the lake first began filling up, striped bass were stocked. Since then other fish have been added, and largemouth bass have become the

The region has been a draw for the film community. “What About Bob?” (above left), released in 1991, was filmed at the lake and in parts of Moneta. It starred Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. “Lake Effects” (above right) was set at SML because the crew saw “something special at Smith Mountain Lake.”

most common fish caught. Due to the size of the lake, and the density of bass, ESPN has hosted and televised its Bassmaster Elite Series for several years at Smith Mountain Lake. Filmmaking has also cropped up along the shores and in the middle of the lake. In 1991, SML made its big-screen debut with the movie, “What About Bob?” The lake had been called Lake Winnipesaukee in the movie (meant to be located in New Hampshire), so despite this claim to fame, the local community had become just a small footnote in the film. A little more than 20 years later, in 2012, the movie “Lake Effects,” produced by Life Out Loud Films, was filmed on and around the lake. This film made the lake and its community the star of the film. Chinah Helmandollar Jewell, production coordinator for “Lake Effects,” said, “There is just something special about Smith Mountain Lake, just being so friendly. It’s not just such a beautiful small town, but the town is so gracious and welcoming.” She added, “This is just the most beautiful lake in America, and it was the main character in the film. I just can’t imagine us making the film anywhere else.”

h, sunshine! It’s an ingredient that makes summer days on Smith Mountain Lake particularly special: The water looks bluer, the daylight comes early and lasts longer, and the skin feels great soaking up those warming rays. Of course, most people are aware of how sun can damage skin. The smart sun worshipers are vigilant about using sunscreen. They also wear hats and duck into the shade of bimini tops, umbrellas or dock overhangs, especially during the heat of midsummer afternoons. It just makes sense to manage one’s sun exposure. The same is true for the boats that are so much a part of SML’s summer fun scene. The sun’s rays — or more specifically, its ultraviolet radiation — are the enemy of fiberglass boats. They degrade gel-coat surfaces, burning away the bright color and shine that give new boats their “let’s take a ride!” look. Given the strength and frequency of SML’s summer sunshine, a boat or personal watercraft that’s not properly shielded will rapidly lose its showroom shine. And today’s trend toward dark hull and deck colors and flashy hull-side graphics only amplifies the need for protection from the sun. Union Hall’s Doug Holt retired from building and repairing fiberglass boats several years ago, moved here, and now operates SML Composites, doing fiberglass restoration and complete boat detailing. He described the fiberglass degradation mechanism this way: “Gel coat is a petroleum byproduct loaded with oils. UV rays drive the oils to the surface where they SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

oxidize — essentially, burn off — with the heat of the sun. What we see as a faded, chalky appearance is the residue ash that remains imbedded on and just below the surface.” Modern gel coats, Holt said, can be brought back to appealing, new-looking appearance through compounding and polishing. The physically demanding job requires the right tools, products and “touch;” amateurs can easily cut right through the thin layer of gel-coat color with over-aggressive use of compound and a power polisher. For Holt to do the job runs between $1,000 and $2,000 for a 23-foot runabout, including full detailing of hull, deck, hardware, windshield, upholstery and carpets. For the price, Holt also applies protectants to each surface. The results are impressive; the price range, he explains, is due to the labor difference between restoring moderately weathered and severely sun-damaged boats. David Owens, a Huddleston-based provider of fiberglass repair and restorative services, agrees. “Detailing a boat with significant oxidation on its hullsides is gong to be significantly more than the

simple cleaning and polishing required on a boat that’s been well protected from UV degradation,” he said.

Cover, Cover, Cover

Owners can minimize the need for restorative services by keeping their craft as shielded from the sun as possible. Covered boat slips provide protection from the sun that’s directly overhead, but damaging rays get to hull sides early and late in the day — and in the seasons when the sun generally is lower in the sky. Traditional mooring covers keep decks from fading but offer no protection below the rub rail unless they are the more recent design that reaches down to the chines and covers the transom or have add-on “skirts” to protect one or both hull sides from lowlevel and reflected rays. “Adding zip-on sun skirts is a growing part of our business,” said Patrick Bush of Got It Covered LLC, which does custom canvas and upholstery work from locations on Burnt Chimney Road and at Bayside Marina & Yacht Club.

While the summer sun is most damaging to boats, coverings also protect hull sides from the low winter sun’s direct and reflected rays.

“A custom skirt for one side of a typical runabout runs under $500. But we typically go out and survey the location and then make recommendations that are sensitive to the customer’s sun situation, boat and budget.” Bush also preaches prevention when it comes to sun damage to boat covers. “We recommend applying 3M Fabric Guard (and Vinyl Guard for upholstery) to protect both fabric and seam thread from degradation.” Another reasonably-priced approach is to install a fabric screen between dock pilings on a boathouse slip’s sunny side. “These are easily removable to preclude ‘view blocking’ when the dock is being used for entertaining,” said Margaret Gober of Virginia Canvas Works Inc. (Virginia 122 just north of Hales

Ford Bridge). “Screens of UV-blocking fabric such as Phisertex-plus keep out 98 percent of the harmful rays but let through the breeze to survive in windy locations.” Spanning the gap between a set of pilings with four-foot-wide fabric, complete with fasteners, runs under $350.

Full coverage

By now, most SML boaters have seen many installations of one of the most comprehensive solutions available: a full-slip Touchless Boat Cover from Automatic Boat Covers Inc. Franchise-holder Jay Shoffner has installed more than 350 units at the lake in the past 11 years — making SML the fifthlargest user of these covers in the country, he said. “Sun bouncing off the water has been shown to add about 50 percent to what a boat gets directly,” Shoffner explains. “A Touchless Boat Cover stops virtually all the UV degradation — both direct and reflected.” Owners of this sun solution also find the expense ($5,000 to $9,000 and up, depending on boat size and type) can be partially recovered in resale values and minimal need for restorative services. “We can definitely tell when a boat has been thoroughly protected from the elements,” said Mark Mills of Webster Marine Center. “We estimate the labor that’s going to be required to bring a boat back to the condition that will attract a buyer and factor that into the trade-in value equation.” Still, the strongest “rave” from owners of Touchless Boat Covers has to do with convenience and the increased boat use and enjoyment that results. “Snapping the canvas on and off our pontoon PHOTOS by JERRy HALE

was such an ordeal, we only did it when company came,” said Pete Hofstetter of Union Hall. “Since we got our Automatic Boat Cover, a touch of the remote has the boat uncovered — and covered again when we return — in 30 seconds. We can go out whenever the mood strikes, with no hassle. Plus the boat stays clean between uses — it’s just more appealing to be aboard a tidy boat. Time and again, we rave about how our ABC is helping us enjoy our boat more!”

While underWay

Boats also get sun exposure while out on the water, and for that a treatment with a UV inhibitor is one defense. “But there’s a vast difference between a DIY coat of carnauba marine wax — which might work up to a month — and a professional application of a polymer sealant that lasts six months to a year,” Holt cautioned. He uses a California-made product called Jet Seal 109, originally formulated for the aerospace industry. But, he said, “Like a good paint job, the secret is in proper preparation of the surface. A slap-on of the product over a partially weathered surface won’t give satisfactory results.”

t’s just after 7 a.m. on a chilly Saturday in December when a half-dozen people gather in the parking lot near the Smith Mountain Dam in Sandy Level. They talk about what needs to be accomplished as they inspect the chainsaws, leaf blowers and hedge clippers they’ve brought with them. These trailblazers are prepping for April’s Dam 50 Festival as part of the lake’s 50th anniversary celebration. The day-long event, sponsored by the Franklin County Family YMCA, includes the Dam 50K, Dam 5K and Dam Fun Run. Leading the cadre of volunteers is Dr. David Horton, a veteran ultramarathon runner, who is directing the 31.07-mile race. He and some others walked the course last year marking it along the way by tying pink plastic ribbons to tree branches. “It’s much, much easier than I wanted it to be,” Horton said of the race, which will take runners from 32 March • April 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

The course includes a combination of trails, paved and unpaved roads, an elevation gain of 4,109 feet and sweeping views of the dam and lake. Beginning on the bridge in front of the dam, runners will head toward the dam’s visitor’s center, continuing on a fire road until it reaches Tolers Ferry Road in Bedford County. After runners wind their way along the back country roads, they will return to the dam only to head up a mountainside trail blazed by Horton and his volunteers. “It’s a figure 8 course,” Horton said. “There’s one loop to the right and then you loop to the left.” The Dam 50 Festival will be held April 2 with the 50K race beginning at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 10 a.m. and the mile-long fun run at noon (The

The time limit for completing the 50K is nine hours, Horton said. “It should be challenging” for first-time ultrarunners, Horton said. “If you mix in running and walking, you should be able to do it.” Horton should know — his running resume can exhaust even the fittest of runners. The professor of Health Sciences and Kinesiology at Liberty University has a running career that spans more than 30 years and 132,000 miles. Horton not only directs his own ultramarathons, including the Mountain Masochist 50-Miler and Hellgate 100K, but he’s also completed more than 160 of them. In 1995 Horton placed third in the Trans-America Footrace, a 64-day stage race from Los Angeles to New York City totaling 2,906 miles, averaging 45 miles a day at a pace of 9 minutes and 15 seconds per mile. In 2005, Horton earned another world speed record on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. He completed his journey in 66 days, 7 hours and 16 minutes by averaging about 40 miles a day. In looking at the numbers, it would appear that ultramarathons have grown in popularity over the past decade. According to Runner’s World magazine, the number of ultramarathons doubled to more than 1,200 in 2014 from just a decade earlier. Horton, who has also run numerous marathons throughout his storied career, believes that ultras are actually easier. “I’ve done lots of these things and marathons are harder,” he said. “You’re running on pavement and you sort of feel like you have to run the whole time.” So what’s Horton’s advice for tackling the Dam 50K? “Get your mileage up,” he said. “Do longer runs, but don’t worry about your speed. Just put in the miles.”

Career coach Josselyn Gregory, fielding questions from a Staunton River High School student, was instrumental in adapting the Reality Check program at the school. She saw a similar program implemented at a middle school while working in New York state.

life’s waters A lake resident laid the foundation for a program to help area high schoolers understand the financial demands of life.

“N

ow I understand why my dad has to say, ‘No!’ sometimes.” That was one key takeaway for Moneta’s Laura Mendez, a student at Bedford County’s Staunton River High School and one of 240 sophomores at the school who participated in the Reality Check program last year. Reality Check was ushered into the area by Huddleston resident Josselyn Gregory, who adapted it from a program she saw in New York state. Sponsored by the school and conducted with the help of Goodwill Industries and the American Association of University Women, the exercise gives students a meaningful glimpse of their future financial responsibilities. Mendez went bankrupt despite beginning her Reality Check with the respectable “pretend salary” she would earn as a licensed practical nurse. “I’ll need to marry a rich husband,” said classmate Megan Graybill of Stewartsville. “Maybe not have kids … and I’ll cut my own hair.”

Graybill had figured a biologist’s earnings would be plenty for living comfortably. “But I ended up with almost nothing left over — it was pretty tight!” she concluded. Said Goodview’s Cody Marshall, who was exploring life as a career mechanic: “I’ll need to get into management to earn enough money. And maybe drive a less expensive truck.”

ImAgInIng the future

Shortly before the event last April, the students met with Sarah Stephens, volunteer manager for Goodwill Industries of the Valley, and Staunton River counselor Robin Shelton, who asked students to imagine their lives at age 30, roughly 15 years out. Are you married? Holding down what job? Working spouse? Kids? How many and what ages? The students’ answers to those questions became the foundation for the Glimpse at Your Future worksheet at each of 20 Reality Stops set up in the school library. At the top of the sheet’s “balance” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

column is written a monthly salary that corresponds to an early-career position, in this area, for each student’s chosen occupation. For a teenager with a $20 a week allowance, that amount might look impressive — over $9,000 a month for a video game designer or veterinarian, $5,800 for an accountant, $4,200 for a welder, $4,900 for a teacher. But wait! At the first Reality Stop table, state and Social Security taxes are deducted, reducing the available cash significantly. “Reality” begins to rear its ugly head. As students visit additional tables in predetermined sequence, volunteers help them estimate expenses for a house or apartment, car purchase and operation, grocery bills, utilities, student loan payments, cellphone and Internet service, medical care, credit cards, property tax, insurance, medical and health needs, grooming and even recreation. Because things happen, there’s also a table where kids draw a “chance” card that might grant an inheritance windfall … or assess for

an expensive auto accident. A celebratory horn sounds whenever someone runs the expenditures gauntlet with savings to spare. Last stop for everyone is Reality Rehab, where Wanda Anthony, the Goodwill Youth Team Leader and Program Manager for Reality Store, reviews each student’s balance sheet and discusses choices that might have improved the result. “Having four kids might be nice, but there are expenses that come with each child,” she might say. Or, “For that career, you’ll need four years of college, and to get into college you’ll need As and Bs, not Cs and Ds. Tuition at in-state schools is about half of what it costs to go out-of-state.” “The students’ reaction to learning what things cost is precious,” said Margee Kaufman of the American Association of University Women who came to SML after retiring from banking two years ago. “The bill for groceries is one place rubber really meets the road.”

Imported by a laker

Gregory, an AAUW member, got her first exposure to a version of the program called Reality Store as a counselor at New York state’s Casey Middle School. She was impressed by how the experience opened students’ eyes to some of life’s financial demands early enough to influence choices they would make in high school and beyond. When she moved to Smith Mountain Lake in 2001, the Bedford Professional Women’s Group had just received a grant for encouraging young

women into business. That program, similar to what Gregory had witnessed in New York, began at Staunton River and Bedford middle schools. As transition counselor at Staunton River, Gregory saw how valuable Reality Store could be for influencing young people’s perceptions of their lives as working adults. Feeling it would be even more meaningful to high school-age kids, she pitched the Reality Store concept to several area upper schools. Staunton River High was the first to adopt it in 2008. About that time, Goodwill Industries, which had been concerned with helping people find gainful employment, was ramping up its Workforce Development Program. Goodwill Industries of the Valleys’ youth team leader Wanda Anthony got wind of the program and offered to help administer it. The partnership has endured, and it now conducts about 30 additional Reality Check programs a year in Roanoke, Bedford, Franklin, Augusta, Botetourt, Campbell and Rockingham counties and in Lynchburg city schools. “The administrative capabilities of the people at Goodwill of the Valleys, coupled with volunteers Students choose a house to purchase from MLS listings in their salary range as part of the Reality Check program at Staunton River High School. from AAUW, has made the expansion to several areas in Virginia possible,” Gregory said. “Each program we run takes lots of preparation, and volunteers are critical for interacting with the students.” Gregory does much of the work to line up the volunteers. “More are needed,” she says, “and they don’t have to be AAUW members. Church groups, neighborhood groups, civic groups or just interested individuals … we can find a spot for anyone who’s willing to help out.” Businesses are also encouraged to sponsor and provide employee volunteers. “We’ve had Shentel, Bedford YMCA, Roanoke Gas, Realtors and car dealers,” Stephens said. “It always turns out to be a meaningful day or evening.” AAUW member Nancy Umberger took the program to her grandchildren’s school, Southeast Guilford High School, near Greensboro, North Carolina, where it has been in operation for six years and continues to thrive. “The community really got behind the program. They just loved it! I had people calling, asking to be a volunteer to help with it. We’d have 35 to 45 volunteers for each session, and there were two sessions each year to involve all of the sophomores in a year,” Umberger said. “We believe this experience has truly added value to student achievement, one student at a time,” said Haywood Stukes, career counselor at Southeast Guilford High School.

hen Shelby Bingham trekked 25 minutes from her South Roanoke home to the Goodview home of a fellow Southwest Virginia Ballet Company board member for a meeting one day in 2007, she couldn’t see the asyet unmarked road she and her family would one day drive — one that would lead to a welcoming, whimsical and breathtaking family retreat on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake and a new lifestyle for her, her husband and three children — and up to 50 of their friends. “We lived in Roanoke for five years before we came to the lake,” Bingham said of her introduction to SML. That fateful board meeting at a now-neighbor’s home immediately planted a seed, even if it was initially a subconscious one. “We were out there on their porch and Larry [the owner] pointed and said, ‘My sister’s selling that piece of land over there.’ I just saw some trees and didn’t think much about it.” Soon after, Bingham, husband Jason and their three children rented a house on SML one weekend, and they found themselves searching out the parcel of land she’d not previously seen for the trees. This was when they realized that the land was relatively flat, was a peninsula and had water on three sides. The seed was germinated.

“With Jason, if he thinks it, it happens the next day. He is such a mover. He just picked up the phone and dialed Larry and asked him what he wanted for that piece of land. We had an offer in that day,” Bingham said. The land secured, next came the minor detail of finding a builder. The Binghams looked no further than down their own street to neighbor Robert Kulp, owner of Blue Ridge Residential contractors and coowner of Roanoke’s Black Dog Salvage. “We were family friends,” Bingham said. “We had always been customers of Black Dog, and one of his best friends lives across the creek from the land. Robert was the one who had the vision, he just knew how the house was supposed to be.” And so began a collaboration in which Kulp, who is also a building and construction graduate of Virginia Tech and co-host of “Salvage Dawgs,” a DIY Network reality show based on his adventures running Black Dog Salvage, was given almost free reign to bring his ideas to life. The Binghams had few constraints but one critical mandate: “The property had to pull you outside,” Bingham said. “That’s where the fun is.” The fun was also in the entire project for Kulp. “When you have a canvas like that, it just gets you excited when you walk out there and realize what

you can do with something like that,” he said. “Some of the lots at the lake are pretty steep. It was obvious that it was a great place to get as close to the water as you could.” With his wheels turning, Kulp produced a sketch of the Adirondack-style, family activity-oriented house within two weeks. “The process was walking the lot and knowing the family and how’d they use the house. Then we

brought in an architect, John Fulton, to actually put it into three dimensions. I handed it over to him, and we tweaked it,” Kulp said. Construction began in the midst of the financial crisis of 2008 with the platform of the house, approximately a year before the rest of the construction began. “It’s on a slab, which is not very common for this type of house,” Kulp said, “but the whole goal was to walk in and out and make it an easy transition between the two.” Then Kulp and his team focused keenly on the style and function of the outdoor portion of life at the house, on which the Binghams wanted to accommodate as many guests as possible, even 50. “If you have a real porch, you want something that looks traditional for that style of house and you want a little bit of a rise, too. So we utilized the front of

the house that sits over the lake and built up some of that, and it allowed us to have a porch that was raised,” he said. Kulp next built a massive outdoor stone fireplace and poured the retaining walls and stairway so that the Binghams could utilize the property before the house itself was complete. By the time the design and function were literally cemented, the Binghams were able to financially commit to the construction of the house. “The layout of the house and the elevation were designed from the lot itself; the entire design was about being able to utilize every view that was available to them on the lake,” Kulp said. By Memorial Day weekend 2009, the vision created by the team of family friends and neighbors was complete. The result: a family-friendly, cozy “old-new house” with three bedrooms on its main level and a bunk room with adjacent sleeping porch upstairs (that together sleep 14) that begs to accommodate dripping bathing suits and wet dogs, grassy flip-flops, spilled drinks and sunscreencoated everything while simultaneously presenting a definitive style, itself a story told by reclaimed trims, fixtures and accents with their own individual casual-cool and quirky vibes. Executing such a look and feel in a house that could sleep 20-plus people was a matter of choosing materials for both durability and with an eye for the unique — not a problem with Bingham and Kulp on the job. “I’m a refurbisher — I just go out and buy anything random that appeals to me and then make it into whatever I like,” said Bingham, who expertly

introduces pops of color into an interior that stars reclaimed shiplap-paneled walls, salvaged wood doors and period light fixtures. “There are things we did here that I wouldn’t do at my full-time house, like use all Sunbrella fabric on the furniture,” said Bingham. Upon entering through the antique front door, it is the wide hallways, reclaimed knotty pine walls and brick floors that invoke an old-home-with-heritage feeling, while bright pops of color on vintage signs, lamps, dishware on open shelves and upholstered headboards infuse energy, whimsy and a sense of fun. Each furnishing, whether it be handed down or harvested from a salvage hunting spree, has a purpose, and not just to create the collected, casual look. “All the furniture has meaning to me,” Bingham said. “Some of it came out of my mother’s house. I have a lot more freedom here to do what I want with decorating.” Kulp’s architectural details give the home a preformed history. “I like a house that tells a story; whether it’s a true story or partially made-up. That’s how you make a new-old house in the first place — you try to create a history for a house that doesn’t have one.” One of those details is a master bedroom that looks like it was added onto the house years after it was built, thanks to board-and-batten walls made of plywood.

“I love the idea of a new-old house; you get the opportunity to use antique and/or reused materials, and where you can’t or where technology has taken over and you want to use a much better product than what was available 100 years ago, then you can,” Kulp said. “But when it gets down to the real details of the house, whether it be a four-panel door with a rim lock on it and old porcelain and clay knobs — sure, you can find a reproduction, but you can also find true antiques.” Some of the home’s antiques are installed — like the salvaged panel pocket door in the bunk room’s bathroom that Kulp fitted with glazed glass to let in light — and some serve as decorative story-telling, like Bingham’s prized quilt that hangs above the bed in one of the guest rooms. “This is my grandparents’ quilt; [my grandmother] used to be a minister at a church and the congregation gave them this for Christmas with their names all embroidered on it. I remember using it growing up,” she said. Sprinkled throughout are Bingham’s fox-hunting mementos that remind her of a beloved sport she took up on a whim in her 30s. There’s a vintage street sign bearing the name of the street on which she grew up hanging above a mammoth retro Coca-Cola drink cooler on the screened porch, and her grandmother’s cuckoo clock residing over the fireplace mantel in the great room. A wine cabinet made from old trolley doors by Black Dog stands sentry on a kitchen wall,

a gift from Shelby to Jason, who is a wine enthusiast. “She’s truly magical in the way she decorates and the things that she comes up with,” Kulp said. “She’s got great taste, and it just filled out that house to where everywhere you look, it’s like, ‘Where’d this come from? Where did that come from?’” Whether they’re enjoying a quiet family getaway weekend or hosting a crowd, the Binghams said their home on SML completely shifts her perspective. “The first thing I do when I come out here is fix a cocktail, which is funny, because I don’t at home. I’m in relaxation mode. It’s a total change of mental state for me,” she said. For Kulp, the home is much more than a flagship project in his portfolio — it cultivates an evergrowing friendship. “I’ve built quite a few houses, and usually by the time you finish with a house, you’re done with it,” he said. “This is the one house that I like more now than when I started the project. It’s a special house to me for sure, and luckily enough, they’re friends of mine, so I get to visit every once in a while.”

The screened porch epitomizes the relaxed, salvage style that plays out throughout the home in a combination of natural woods and punches of color on unique items that each have their own stories to tell.

AT LEFT. Twenty-one-year-old Brad Bowman works in his woodshop, which is on his family’s property in Ferrum. Bowman specializes in furniture done in the Windsor style. TOP RIGHT. Bowman, wearing a traditional German Baptist hat, studied under Laban Myers from Chambersburg, Pa., an expert in custom wood chairs. Myers agreed to train Bowman in the art of making the pieces from scratch. BOTTOM RIGHT. The Ferrum man has been making chairs for nearly three years. His woodcraft combines machined pieces with fine detail work.

B

rad Bowman’s craft comes alive in the solitude of his Ferrum workshop. There, he takes pieces of walnut, cherry, oak and other woods to create elaborate, elegant and, most notably, comfortable Windsorstyle chairs. His business is aptly named Fine Wood Chairs. “I like working with wood. I think wood is fun, and it’s fascinating to me,” said Bowman, a 21-year-old who learned how to make chairs three years ago. His familiarity with woodworking, though, dates back to his childhood.

Bowman’s family had been in construction, and he spent time as a youngster in his father’s shop, which is on the family’s land in Ferrum. “I was always in here when I was little, making little stuff, using a hand saw,” he said. Bowman’s father gave him a corner of the workshop to call his own, and over time, Bowman has expanded into almost the rest of the building. Saws, sanders and planers stretch from end to end, with new equipment coming in periodically. Those machines help Bowman craft his Windsor furniture, which include stools SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

tOP LEFt. Brad Bowman uses several hand tools in his trade. ABOVE. Bowman uses walnut, cherry, oak, hickory and maple in his chairs. His favorite? Walnut. It’s more rare and expensive. “I like the smell of it,” he said. “I like the way it works; it’s really easy to work. It’s a very classy wood.” At LEFt. and benches, in addition to chairs. Some pieces are highly decorative, while others have other features that help them stand out, such as a deep-dish seat. No metal is used in his creations; the legs and spindles often come up through the adjoining wood and are wedged into place. Bowman said he has about seven different Windsor styles that he works in. The style has British origins and came to America in the early 18th-century, according to online sources. Bowman’s path took him through Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where he connected with family friend Laban Myers, a fellow German Baptist who had a reputation for his expertise in the Windsor style. 58 March • April 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

At age 18, Bowman began training with Myers. “He got me started on easier styles to get the feel for a bunch of different styles and designs,” Bowman told The Franklin News-Post in an interview in 2014. “We’d start from scratch with lumber, beginning with the legs. The parts are created separately and then put together, usually with the seat being attached last. Then there is quite a bit of sanding and staining.” Within the first year, after several visits to Pennsylvania, Bowman had at least made most of the styles Myers was doing. “I had it pretty much figured out” by that point, Bowman said.

Brad Bowman trims the ear of one of his Windsor-style chair on a band saw in his workshop in Ferrum.

Bowman’s chairs are more expensive than those bought off a production line, but there’s value in the time, effort and quality of what he produces.

The fine maple wood grain of the seat is shown on one of Bowman’s Windsorstyle chairs. The spindles — made of walnut — cast shadows on the piece, which has no metal elements in it. 60 March • April 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

All that was left was fine-tuning his craft, something Bowman has succeeded at. His chairs are sold at Wood Grains Amish Furniture in Rocky Mount and at Better Wood Furniture in southwest Roanoke County. Additionally, Myers, who is in his 60s, is backing off of his business somewhat, so Bowman has been filling some of his orders. While Bowman uses large machines for part of the process, he does much of the detail work by hand. Typically, he’s working on a set of chairs at a time and said that a set of four chairs plus two arm chairs might take a week and a half to complete. “Quantity doesn’t up the time as much as you’d think it would,” he said. “It’s the setup for each different angle that takes time.” Bowman’s chairs are more expensive than those bought off a production line, but there’s value in the time, effort and quality of what he produces. Right now, he’s a one-man operation, though he

said he would consider hiring someone if he found a worker passionate and skilled enough. Being his own boss, however, is comforting. “I’m responsible for everything in the chair. And if anything is messed up, it’s my fault,” he said. “I’m accountable for everything I do, and I know every piece of every chair.” Bowman is deeply engrained in his profession, continuously creating new work. “I’m always learning stuff,” he said. “I learn something new every day, whether it’s how a certain wood reacts … or how a wood chips or whether certain woods don’t stain well.” When there’s a chill in the air, his days are spent inside his shop; during summer, he is able to open the bay doors of the building or work outside. A nearby raspberry patch makes for a peaceful setting within which to work, and the smell of freshly cut wood is alluring. It’s no wonder from where Bowman’s inspiration flows.

Brad Bowman keeps elaborate notes for a block system, which he uses for drilling various holes on his furniture.

ark and Josselyn Gregory moved to the lake from Buffalo, New York, in 2001 and lived in a house just above the Hales Ford Bridge. Four years later they bought a house in Bass Cove, off Craddock Creek, to generate rental income. While working at the Bass Cove home, they noticed a “For Sale” sign on the road, but the property was so overgrown that they couldn’t even see the lake. The lot had an old log cabin, three sheds, chicken coops, electric deer fences and a watering system with hoses running all over. It was a mess. A few months later, they again saw the overgrown lot but this time from their boat. When they turned the stern toward the lot, they gasped at the view out onto the lake: Spectacular! They bought the lot in 2005, tore down the sheds, coops and fences, and disposed of the fish tanks in the cabin’s lower level. “Why did you ever choose this?” was the persistent question from their friends. Part of the answer was, “We loved the view,” but they said they also wanted to trade the steepness of their up-river property for a flat lot. Once they got the property looking presentable, the Gregorys hosted their friends for scavenger hunt parties and dinner parties — and one couple held an engagement party for their daughter at the cabin.

Mark and Josselyn Gregory bought the lot they currently live on in 2005, but it took a lot of work to turn the unkempt piece of property in Huddleston into the gem it is today.

They even found someone who wanted the cabin. This fellow numbered all the logs and took the cabin, piece by piece, to his property in Thaxton where, when re-assembled, it became a hunting cabin. The Gregorys said they traded him the two-bedroom cabin for work that he did with heavy equipment on their lot: removing the cabin, its foundation, all the appliances and preparing the site for construction of a new home. The first thing they built on the new lot was a structure they call the ”Garage Mahal” — considerably smaller than the “Taj,” but huge for a garage. In addition to the part for vehicles, there is a workshop that was re-purposed as an office for Mark while he served as general contractor for the home building project. Here he met with contractors, paid bills and 64 March • April 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

searched the Internet for new products and innovative solutions he could incorporate. The Garage Mahal has since been transformed into a future in-law or caretaker cottage with its own full bathroom and separate heating and electrical systems. A few years later the couple enlarged the building to accommodate a greenhouse for Josselyn, with large southwestfacing windows for maximum sun exposure As general contractor, Mark hired the subcontractors: the framer, stonemason, electrician, roofers, and so on, but being the hands-on guy he is, Mark helped the framers put up walls, worked with the stonemason, helped out with the electrical wiring and installed the extensive home security and audio systems. He proudly shows off “the brains” of the house — the bundled wiring, color-coded water

pipes, on-demand water heaters and audio-video closet. In 2011 the Gregorys had a buyer for their former house before the new home was finished, so they lived in a rental for six months as they painstakingly urged the new home to completion. As for the home’s style, Josselyn calls it, “Just a typical lake house, with big windows for views, a walk-out lower level and an open plan — with living, dining and kitchen areas blending together — that is perfect for entertaining.” But it’s big — 3,240 square feet on the main floor, 3,000 square feet on the lower level and a large bonus room/office above the attached two-car garage. Because of the orientation of the house on the lot, they enjoy both sunsets and sunrises and love the amount of light that streams into the house. This home has other unique features, too. n All the edge corners of the drywall are rounded, a technique Mark saw in California that looks very “finished” and is less inclined to chip when bumped. His drywall installers had never done rounded edges before, but they accomplished it here.

Since the couple has taken up wine-making as a hobby, they’ve run out of room, and some bottles are stored in the Garage Mahal. n On the main level there are two master suites, and all doors on this level are wheelchair accessible. On the lower level, two bedrooms and a bath comprise a family suite that can be closed off from the nearby entertainment area. n Next to the front door is a babbling brook waterfall that Mark created. With its open concept floor plan, this is a party house: site of annual chicken-wings parties, Super Bowl parties and a tree-trim party, which raises money for Lake Christian Ministries, where Josselyn volunteers with the New Tomorrows program. “At some point we’ll decide this house is too big, and we’ll downsize. Then it will just have been an investment — but one which we thoroughly enjoyed with our family and friends,” Mark said.

composition for any work of art, including garden design, apply to photography. A good work should have a clearly defined subject, a sense of balance, a point of view and simplicity so the viewer knows where he or she is supposed to look.

Framing the picture

Framing a scene is a way of bringing attention to the subject, drawing your eye to it. This photography technique also gives a sense of depth and layers to a scene, particularly one that is looking into the far

distance. Another use of framing is to give context to your photograph. For example, a pagoda framed by a moon window surrounded by fretwork sets the scene of a Chinese garden; a frame of foliage denotes being in a garden or out in nature. When you take a photograph, look for an opportunity to frame your subject with an overhanging tree branch, the arch of a gazebo, a view between two shrubs or other plants, through a gate, an arch, a fence railing or any other creative framing device.

Rule of thiRds

Most people have a strong inclination to put the picture’s subject smack dab in the center of the photograph, thus clearly drawing the eye to what the picture’s all about. There are times, such as in a formal, symmetrical garden, when centering the subject is exactly what’s wanted, but in most cases, putting the subject in the center of the picture makes a static composition that is less dynamic and exciting. Instead, most photographs should adhere to the time-tested “rule of thirds.” It was the Renaissance painters who first codified the rule of thirds (they also were the first to develop an understanding of perspective). They realized that the most effective artworks were ones where the eye is encouraged to move through the image. By placing the most important elements in your

depth of field

Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp. A long depth of field means your entire shot will be in focus, making it possible to capture both the near and far planes in the image clearly. A short depth of field keeps the nearby subject in focus, but blurs the foreground or background (depending where you choose to focus). Being able to set the aperture for deeper or shallower focus is a powerful composition tool for photography. Generally, the lower your f-stop, the

shorter your depth of field will be. However the focal length of your lens also is a determining factor. Experiment with your equipment, using different f-stops for the same scene, to learn what settings give you the depth of field you want. To capture a wide garden scene with everything in focus, choose a large f-stop number; for a flower close-up where you want the background to disappear so the flower pops in contrast, chose a low f-stop number. In some wide shots, it also may be more effective if the distant background is blurry so the foreground stands out in clear relief (also try blurring the foreground with a sharp background). Taking photographs mindfully with an eye to composition and light not only is a wonderful way to create beautiful images of your garden and to record memories of special times, it also teaches you to look and notice details such as the play of light and shadows on a scene, the way various foliage textures and colors play against each other, and other visual details. Your pictures will improve, and your visual experience of the world will be richer.

As an alternative, the icons can be shown in color, but in monochromatic form. In this case, we can change the color to whatever works best with the design of the piece.

Icons to use for black & white reproduction. These are shown in 60% of black, but the screen could be changed to work best with the design.

Bitter Remains

cOURTESy Of DIANE fANNINg

Diane Fanning has an unlikely hero, one borne out of an image she saw on a television crime show. The episode depicted the killing of a young girl and the near fatal attack on her best friend. Despite being left for dead, the friend walked a half-mile down a gravel road in West Texas to a neighbor’s house, where emergency personnel came and airlifted her to a hospital. Not only did she ultimately work with a forensic artist to identify her attacker, she also faced him in court and helped put an end to his 20-year killing spree. “She was instantly my hero,” Fanning said. It was inspiration for a career to come. The Bedford resident released her 14th true-crime book, “Bitter Remains,” in January, and she plans to release her 10th fiction novel later this year. Fanning’s first crime book centered on the case of Tommy Lynn Sells, with whom she

had corresponded while he was incarcerated. Fanning was living in Texas at the time, and her book helped to get a new trial for Julie Rae Harper, who had been convicted of killing her 10-year-old son. Sells, who was executed in 2014, is now believed to have killed Harper’s son. Seeing Harper walk out of the courtroom a free woman was one of Fanning’s proudest moments, she said, “knowing that I helped find justice not just for her but for her murdered son.” Fanning was given the Defenders of the Innocent Award from the Illinois Innocence Project for that effort. And recently, a witness is connecting another case to Sells. “That book, although it was my first, keeps on living,” Fanning said. Fanning’s newest book, “Bitter Remains,” begins a little closer to home, in Kinston, North Carolina, about four hours from Smith Mountain Lake. The victim was a devoted

Career of Evil

By Graeme Simsion A great book club read. Don Tillman, a geneticist from Australia who has Asperger’s syndrome, seeks to find a wife through scientific methods and some rather peculiar preparations. There is much more to Rosie, one of the women in his research study, than Tillman’s scientific mind can compute, but he muddles through with delightful consequences for the reader. (Also released by Simsion is “The Rosie Effect,” which includes the baby project!)

By Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) In the third installment of the Cormoran Strike series, our eponymous private detective sets about finding the person who sent a package containing a severed leg to his assistant, Robin Ellacott. With the police certain they’ve found their man, Strike and Robin set off on their own to find the true suspect — someone from Strike’s past. The gruesome acts continue as the pair explore the depraved worlds of three violent individuals.

mother; the perpetrators, a disturbed couple. “I was drawn to it because of the cast of characters,” Fanning said. “You don’t normally see a musician and actress kill a graphic artist. Those three together were so odd, so interesting to me. And I’m always wanting to understand the psychology of the people who commit these crimes.” Over the past decade, Fanning has helped at domestic violence centers and has spoken to students about her work. “Having knowledge of the red flags and having awareness of the type of person [who becomes violent] and how they’re going to present themselves” is important, she said. “The more you know about how these crimes came about, the better you can protect yourself and the better you can advise a friend or family member who has red flags waving in their face.”

The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime By Miles Harvey My love of maps, old and new, harks back to my youth. The ancient drawings catalogue a sense of adventure, while newer maps tease me to explore trails and mountains that get little traffic. I’ve long appreciated the skill it takes to create and to properly interpret them. It was of little surprise to read in “Lost Maps” about a man, Gilbert Joseph Bland Jr., who traveled across the country quietly stealing maps from prominent libraries. The author does more than tell the tale of Bland using compelling and intricate details — he also crafts a lore around maps and explores the fascination many people have with them. — Ryan Tipps

h beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, how dearly we do love ya. You never disappoint with your majestic mountains, breath-taking sunsets and expansive waterways always calling out for yet another boating adventure. As we celebrate our SML 50th anniversary this month, let us take a moment to appreciate and reflect upon the unique, the quirky and the distinctive Southern charm of our enchanting little slice of paradise. There are few other places where you can: Be in the Kroger grocery store checkout line and see a gal decked out in a tiara and satin dress standing next to someone in a bikini and flip flops. And no one pays it a bit of attention. Awaken to a beautiful sunrise over the mountains, and at day’s end sip cocktails in a toast as the sun sets over the shoreline. Experience the “Franklin Wave” — a subtle flip of the hand from the top of the steering wheel of a car or truck, noting that the hand does not leave said steering wheel. It’s an acquired skill, requiring years of practice to perfect.

Sample some of the best ice cream on the planet at Homestead Creamery (their peach flavor in the summer months should be classified as an addictive substance), partake of the fresh margaritas at Mexico Viejo, and nibble the delectable fried pickles at Jake’s Place — all in the same day. Attend Sunday morning church services from the comfort of your own boat. Known affectionately by locals as “Preacher on the Water,” Bill Bowling Memorial Chapel — “The Floating Chapel” — offers a truly unique way to get your church on while at SML. Wave down the ice cream boat. If you can’t make it to Homestead Creamery don’t despair, somewhere out on the lake you’ll find The Ice Cream Boat, ready to provide you with all your beat-the-heat treats. I’m told you can even locate them via a GPS tracker; how cool is that?! Enjoy the lack of traffic. For us poor souls who must trek down to SML from the northern regions of our expansive state, trust me when I tell you that the reprieve from the daily Northern VA gridlock truly replenishes the soul. And, the lower gas prices at the lake are a nice little bonus as well. Be a voyeur without getting arrested. Come on, admit it, one of the best perks about SML is our ability to tool around the lake and peer into everyone else’s backyard. If they leave the house curtains open, we also get to check out our neighbors’ decorating style. Skinny dip at midnight. I’ve heard rumors this occurs often across the lake. If you read Dock Tale Hour in the January/February 2016 issue of Laker, you know I’ve gotten into a wee bit of trouble with this pastime. I would love to hear your stories about life here at SML. I bet we could fill a book. I’ve already got the title: “Something In the Water.” Who knows, maybe during these next 50 years we’ll see it in print. It could happen. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was In Love With a Short Man Once” and “Magic Fishing Panties.” Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
