Around here it seems that fall and festivals go hand-in-hand. This year, we welcome the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival back to the lake’s shore. The two-day event, now in its 28th year, will be held at the former Crazy Horse Campground near Crazy Horse Marina in Scruggs after having been held at land-locked LakeWatch Plantation since 2008.

It wouldn’t feel like fall at the lake without the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. Now in its 26th year, this three-day event has raised more than $3 million for area charities since its inception. This is a great opportunity to not only see eight exquisitely decorated waterfront homes, but also a chance to get out on the lake and take in the sights.

arol Brewer’s garden is a magnet for birds, bees, butterflies and people. Passersby stop to admire it, and often ask permission to come on the property to see it up close. They refer to it as the “Emerald on the Corner.” This lush garden wasn’t always a bed of roses. When Carol moved into her house in the Runk and Pratt Retirement Community on Westlake Road in Hardy, the landscape consisted of a few foundation shrubs. Not beautiful, but not a problem. The problem arose whenever it rained. The house is at the bottom of a sloping field, and all the runoff water seeped onto Carol’s and her neighbor’s properties, leaving huge puddles as deep as 6 inches. “The sunroom in the house two doors down had to be replaced twice because of the flooding,” Carol said. She built her garden to solve the water problem. “The plants, plus a berm and a rock wall have cured the problem,” she added. But her garden is more than just water control. Carol has been brilliant at creating a lush, private space that bursts with bloom throughout the growing season. To screen her back garden from the open field behind, she has cleverly layered plants, putting tall ones in the back along the property line and shorter shrubs and perennials in front. Along one side, a row of columnar arborvitae provides height and evergreen cover without taking up a lot of bed space. A path intersects the long bed that runs the length of the garden, passing under an arch to the field. On the other side of that is a medley of small trees and tall shrubs in the back to continue the screen, with lower growing plants in front. Carol said she loves Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), but prefers them as trees rather than multistemmed shrubs. Planted near the back of the border, she limbs them up to create additional planting space underneath, and crowds in roses, maiden hair grass (Miscanthus sinensis) and a wide collection of shrubs, perennials and annuals, giving the garden its lush, verdant appearance. All the plants in the garden were either purchased on sale at the end of the season or were gifts from friends or relatives, Carol said. Sometimes she finds ailing plants, the rejects that are on sale, and delights in nursing them back to health. Carol has no plan for the garden. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” she said. “Where there’s an empty spot, I put something in it.” Now that the structure of larger shrubs is established, she focuses mainly on

perennials and small shrubs with occasional annuals for their continuous bloom. To give the garden definition and to hold the raised beds designed to absorb and stop the excess water, Carol has built a two-course concrete red brick wall, which edges all the beds. To say Carol built the wall is not a euphemism for hiring someone to build it for her. She did all the work herself, carrying six bricks at a time in her wagon. She also toted stones she found nearby to edge the outside border of the garden behind the arborvitaes and channel the water. It took 50 trips with her wagon to collect all the stones, Carol said. Each round trip is nearly two-tenths of a mile, meaning Carol logged around 10 miles lugging stones. She’s had three hernias to prove it, she said. “I shouldn’t have lifted it all,” Carol said. “But I did! I’m self-reliant and independent. I know what I want done, and I don’t want to wait for help or don’t want to ask for help. I even wash my own windows.”

Surrounded by shrubbery and perennial flowers, this bench set in the mixed border is a lovely spot to experience the garden.

In addition to building walls and creating stone edging, Carol has done all the planting herself and keeps up with the weeding, fertilizing, deadheading, spreading milky spoor to control larvae in her lawn, spreading pre-emergent weed control (“I do it by hand because the machines got it into my flower beds,” she said), controlling the Japanese beetles (she knocks them off the plants into a bowl of soapy water) and pruning. “I have my own hedger, blower, shears and loppers, and I know how to use them,” she said proudly. One might think that the garden would consume all of Carol’s energy, but that’s just one of the 79-year-old’s many activities. Twenty years ago, she started the women’s singing group, “Notables,” that performs at nursing homes. She is still a member of that choir as well as a longtime member of the Lakeside Singers (she has sung 27 concerts with them). She also sings in the choir at Trinity

Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. Carol plays in seven different bridge groups, two mahjong and one bunko group. She’s also an active member of the Artsy Garden Club; she makes her own jewelry and does cross-stitching to relax. Her garden attracts hummingbirds (last year she counted 25), so now Carol is studying them so she can give a hummingbird program. She has been doing the children’s moment at Trinity for 25 years and also teaches vacation Bible school. The arched bridge that spans the edging wall from the garden to the lawn has special significance for Carol. One of the men at church built it for her vacation Bible school class. “I wanted the children to walk from the hallway over the bridge into my classroom so they’d have the experience of traveling from the mundane to something special,” she said. Now it’s in her garden, a lovely reminder of that class. In between all those activities, Carol dog sits. “I

slept in five different beds in six weeks,” she said. “Five different people asked me to stay at their house to look after their dog while they were away.” When we met, Carol was packing for an Alaskan cruise where she is booked for activities that include dog sledding, zip lining and riding in a helicopter. “I’m doing something different every day,” she said excitedly. A retired first grade teacher, she and her husband moved to a waterfront property on the lake from Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1990. They relocated to the retirement community six years ago, and Carol began her garden a year later after her husband passed away. Carol loves spending time in her garden or sitting in her swing just outside her back door, looking, listening and noticing. “It’s amazing to realize what’s going on out there when you stop and look,” she said. “There’s so much happening in nature. Mine is a renewal garden. It renews me, and I renew it.” As winner of this year’s annual Lovely Laker Landscape Contest, Carol will receive a gift certificate for $1,000 in merchandise from Lakescapes Nursery in Union Hall.

he Strups are longtime lake lovers — Linda Strup first came to Smith Mountain Lake in the early 1970s with her parents to camp at Pelican Point on the Blackwater River arm of the lake. She and Tom got married in 1978 and continued to come to SML, eventually buying a lake house in 1989. They spent their summers here, which turned out to be a great place for their two boys, who always brought along friends. “The great thing about the lake is that you can have fun here whether you’re camping or living in a house,” Linda said. “We love to fish, ski, kayak, paddleboard, and sometimes just float in the cove.” When the boys got married (soon there were grandchildren; now there are four), Tom and Linda 30 September/October 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

decided they needed more room to accommodate their growing family. John Brock, president of Brockworks Inc., built their home in 2012, taking about a year from start to finish. The Strup home is definitely eye-catching when viewed from either land or by water. It is on a point lot in Park Place with 800 feet of waterfront and overlooks two small islands. There are wide water views of the county park, the state park and the gap of Smith Mountain. Much about this house is superlative, and you can visit this beauty as part of the SML Charity Home Tour on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 7, 8 and 9. There are panoramic lake views from every room. “It’s all about the views,” Linda said. With five bedrooms — each with a bed facing

the lake — and four full- and two half-baths, there is plenty of room for guests who visit most every summer weekend. An octagonal screened porch with fireplace is spectacular, and there’s even a second-level octagonal sitting room. (Known as “The Belvedere,” this architectural feature was designed and situated to look out on a pleasing scene — in this case Smith Mountain Lake.) Beautiful detailing abounds throughout the home. Both the kitchen and the great room have striking coffered ceilings, and the dining area, conveniently situated between them, has a stacked stone fireplace that ascends two stories to a vaulted, barrel ceiling. Yet this house is casual and low-key — the owners describe the style as “coastal casual.” The interior

walls are painted calming colors found in nature: yellow, light blue, beige and gray. The coffered ceilings are painted white, giving the home an unexpected brightness. Adding to the airy look is the painted furniture. “I got into chalk painting,” Linda said. “I transformed furniture that was dark into lighter colors, and sometimes added a distressed look.” The home’s main gathering place is the dining room. “We play a lot of games here,” Linda explained. “We wanted a house that is really useable, not something fussy.” The dining space flows into the great room on one side and into the kitchen on the other. From the main floor, it’s just a short stroll down a rather flat lot to SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

access the long natural beach and extensive dock. Unlike many lake houses, this one has no lower level. Guest suites are upstairs with easy access to the “Belvedere” octagonal relaxing salon. The Strup home boasts a number of creative treasures. A hand-painted watercolor map of the lake with the family’s favorite places identified adorns the great room. “Our house, our favorite ski cove (actually Becky’s Creek), our former house, and so on,” Linda said pointing to each. The master suite has a patio with a panoramic view. In the powder room, there is a sink atop a wine barrel as its cabinet; a wine room is hidden behind the fireplace, but ingeniously given away by a unique wine glass chandelier. “Wine is definitely the theme here, influenced by my cousin, who owns a vineyard in Sonoma County,” 32 September/October 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Tom said. The Strup kitchen is any cook’s dream with an island big enough to let several cooks work in harmony. “I love to cook,” Linda said. There are two sinks, two dishwashers and a lakefacing breakfast bar made of reclaimed stagecoach flooring from Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke. Tom, who retired two years ago after working 41 years at Ferguson Enterprises, mentioned his company’s items in the home. “All the lighting, cabinets, appliances and plumbing.” Linda, who calls herself a “professional volunteer,” has worked in marketing, event planning, grant writing and grant funding for nonprofits. “I know how hard it is for nonprofits to raise money,” Linda said. “We have enjoyed going on the Charity Home Tour for over 20 years, and now that our house is part of it — it’s our turn to give back.”

t’s been said that one of the greatest gifts people can give is their time. This year, more than 1,200 volunteers will take part in the 26th annual Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, a three-day event where ticket holders can visit eight lakefront homes with proceeds benefiting area charities. “It’s an effort,” said Denise Tuttle, the home tour’s executive chair. “It’s time and energy.” Tuttle would know. This is her sixth year on the home tour board and her third year serving as executive director. She credits the tour’s longevity and success to those who choose to be a part of the event year after year. “Here at the lake, we have a number of retired folks who are supremely talented and who want to give back to the community,” she said. While the home tour itself takes most of those volunteers, others work behind the scenes yearround to help make it a success. “I think there’s not enough credit given to this executive board,” Tuttle said. “They work their butts off. You have to put your heart and soul into it.” The all-volunteer executive board is made up of an executive chair, a vice chair, secretary, treasurer and chairs of committees that include home selection, public relations, tickets, traffic administration and website administration, among others. Peggy and George Morrison serve on the home tour board — Peggy is chair of home administration; George is the traffic administration chair. They first became involved with the nonprofit when their

Contentment Island home was featured on the tour in 2012. When the charities are selected, Peggy pairs them with the selected homes. The number of volunteers that are needed is determined by a home’s layout. For example, a home with an open floor plan might not need as many volunteers as one that has separate rooms, Peggy said.

Taking care of the volunteers is paramount to the tour’s success, George added. “If you don’t make it a positive experience, they’re probably not going to be receptive to coming back.”

Two times a year — once in the spring and again about a month just before the tour — hostess and traffic team members visit the homes, Peggy said. They not only have to figure out the traffic flow for visitors and where to station volunteers, but also must identify a space for volunteers to take breaks. Taking care of the volunteers is paramount to the tour’s success, George added. “If you don’t make it a positive experience, they’re probably not going to be receptive to coming back.” Logistics, including vehicle and boat parking, are worked out during that initial visit, too. Boat traffic, George said, accounts for 10-20 percent of the total traffic on the home tour. “There are three people at least for every dock volunteering,” he added. Other considerations that must be taken into account are adequate parking for volunteers, handicap parking for visitors and the topography

It takes more than 1,200 volunteers to help make the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour a success. There are a variety of positions that are available throughout the threeday event, including passing out booties that visitors must wear on their feet and directing visitors to the homes. While most visitors come by vehicle, about 10-20 percent come by boat.

of the land around the home to ensure the safety of those visiting. “There are a lot of things they’ll look at from a safety perspective,” George said of the homes’ assigned traffic captains. During a second walk-through of the homes, final tweaks are made. “You have to be prepared for anything and everything,” Peggy said. There are five shifts for each home during the tour — two each on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday. Each charity is responsible for soliciting volunteers to work in the homes during the tour as well as help raise funds, Tuttle said. “They are volunteers as well,” Tuttle said of the charities. “They are supremely dedicated.” To track the 1,400 volunteer shifts that are needed,

an online volunteer management system is used, according to John Layton, who serves as the home tour’s web administrator. Layton became involved with the tour when his home was featured in 2013. “Each home has its own requirements and staffing needs,” Layton said. This year, the home tour implemented a new web-based system called iVolunteer, Layton said. It allows for representatives of the charities to see which volunteer spots are filled and the ones that are still available. “This one is much easier,” he added. “As you make an assignment and put somebody in a slot, it gives their names and a link to their home address and phone number.” The system can also generate email reminders to

Chickens are sourced from a nearby organic farm. “We try to get the best pork that we can get,” Bruno said. “We try to get the best beef that we can get.” He gets whole cuts of meat then grinds them for burgers and meatballs. “Does it take more time? Is it a pain in the butt?” Tiffany asked. Maybe. “But it tastes better.” Every part of the meat is used, including bits and pieces to make stock. Bruno points out that many restaurants do not make their own stock these days. “Why buy the base?” he asked. “To me, that is not what cooking is. If I did that, I would not be able to sleep.” Tiffany added, “There are no shortcuts.” Take, for example, the restaurant’s new pickled French fries, which take five days to make. The potatoes are fermented, double fried and served with a Russian sauce. “They taste just like a Reuben sandwich,” Bruno said, clearly happy with the result. Bruno makes several different types of pasta, including one of organic quinoa dough, in-house each week. He said he is constantly asking himself, “How can we do things a little better?”

Bruno Silva (left, center) came to professional cooking in his late 20s, but food was always a big part of his family growing up in Peru. Dishes from Silva’s kitchen use local ingredients, including produce and meat grown locally. During the summer months, The Landing Restaurant features daily dinner specials.

FAMILY TIES

Bruno came to professional cooking a bit later in life, attending culinary school in his late 20s. “I always wanted to be a cook, and maybe because of my family,” he said. “I remember going into the kitchen and helping out.” He grew up in Peru, and was one of 10 children in his family. As a nod to Bruno’s homeland, The Landing’s menu includes house-made Peruvian sausage and roasted chicken that is “Peruvian brined and roasted with anticucho, apple Israeli couscous and crispy Brussels sprouts.” Bruno’s love of mixing flavors can be found in most of his dishes such as “The San Francisco” appetizer, made of crab salad with Meyer lemon

Many of the dishes served at The Landing Restaurant have a Peruvian twist.

CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT. Three years ago, Tiffany and Bruno Silva bought a food truck. Called “Man’s Best Friend on Wheels,” the Gastrotruck can be found at area festivals and local craft breweries. The roasted chicken is cooked in a brine with Peruvian spices and served with Israeli couscous and Brussels spouts. Chef Bruno Silva says he learns something new every day. House-made Peruvian sausage is another dish that can be found on the menu at The Landing.

His take on carbonara includes house-made bucatini pasta, bacon, braised pork belly, cracked pepper, Pecorino Romano cheese and a poached egg that diners crack themselves and mix into the dish. During the summer season, the restaurant features a nightly special — Monday is tacos; Tuesday, burgers; Wednesday, steak; and Thursday is fried oysters.

That The Landing has been around for a dozen years is not by chance. Bruno works six days a week in the summer, 80 to 90 hours each week. Yet, he remains excited about new opportunities. “I get bored,” he said. “Every year there has to be something new.” A few years ago, the couple opened the Gastropub at the restaurant. “We were the first on the lake to do the craft beers,” Bruno said. Three years ago the Silvas bought a food truck, which is used mostly during the off-season and can often be found parked at festivals or local craft breweries. “She (Tiffany) called it my midlife crisis when I got the food truck,” Bruno said. “Most men get a Porsche, I get a food truck.” About a year and a half ago, the Silvas added BTZ Catering, to their list of offerings. The “B” is for Bruno, “T” for Tiffany and “Z” for Zoe, the couple’s 10-year-old daughter. Earlier this year, the catering company provided lunch and dinner for 1,200 VIPs and performers at FloydFest, an annual, five-day

music and arts festival in Floyd. In addition to all that, Tiffany manages and Bruno supplies food for weddings at Bernard’s Landing. “We will do 26 weddings this year through the end of October,” Bruno added. “We are already halfbooked for 2017, and will be fully booked soon.” The restaurant also offers wine dinners twice a year, in the fall and in the spring, which helps boost business in the off-season. And they offer cooking classes in the winter as well. “Some people like to cook and get involved and some people like to drink wine and watch,” Tiffany said. “It’s almost become a dinner club,” Bruno added. The class schedule will be posted soon on the restaurant’s website, www.thelandingsml.com. The couple is constantly looking at ways to improve and change their restaurant and offerings. They said they are kicking around the idea of hosting family dinners where guests can share food and conversation. “Food brings people together,” Tiffany said. And Bruno said he has a new plan for the GastroTruck. “My goal for the future: to go on tour with a band that I like. Eventually, that will happen.” Despite the long hours, Bruno knows that being a chef is the job he was meant to have. “For me, I love working because I still learn something new every day,” he said. “I am not a chef who sits in the office. That would never make me happy. I am always going to be a cook. I love what I do because I think about food all the time. I don’t think I could do anything else.”

Horses are tHis family’s affair

orting through photographs on her phone, Kathryn Polk’s finger moved at lightning speed until she found the one she wanted. It was a grainy picture of her mother, June Ledingham, holding her as a baby atop a

horse. Well before she could walk, Polk was riding. Before she could write her own name, she was competing in equestrian events. Sitting in the dining room of the brick ranch home near Glade Hill that she shares with her husband, Ricky, a contractor, and their two sons, Andrew, 6, and JohnThomas, 3, Polk recounted those early familial memories. At age 8, Polk’s mother took her on her first hunter pace, a competitive event that is meant to simulate a foxhunt. As her mother passed a group of riders, Polk said she tried to follow, but the riders wouldn’t let her pass.

50 September/October 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

“I said, ‘Excuse me, may I please pass?’” Polk recalled. Ahead of her, Polk remembered her mother calling out, “‘If you can’t keep up, then you shouldn’t be riding with me.’” But Polk was not discouraged. Instead, she rose to the challenge and eventually made her way around the riders to catch up to her mother. June Ledingham was born and reared in Ireland and moved to the U.S. when she was 21, Polk said. She still runs the Greenwich, Connecticut farm where Polk grew up.

TOP. The Polk family takes an early morning ride at their farm in Glade Hill. RIGHT. Ricky, Andrew, 6, JohnThomas, 3, and Kathryn Polk with one of the family’s four horses. Kathryn Polk has a lifetime of experience in riding and showing horses.

All of the Ledingham children, more than a dozen of them, were avid riders. “My grandmother … she used to fox hunt; the whole family did,” Polk said. “They all grew up riding. It was such a wonderful experience.” Polk’s uncle, Commandant John Ledingham, rode for 25 years in the Irish Army Equitation School and competed as an Irish team rider in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. He’s also won three world championships, three European championships and 63 Nations Cups for Ireland. Since retiring from competition, he is now an international coach. It’s that family connection to equestrianism that kept Polk showing and competing for many years. “I knew horses would always be a big part of my life,” she recalled. room in Polk’s barn with memories of her equestrian days. Pausing before a series of photos, Polk told the story of the day she was riding her horse, The Joker, in a cross-country competition. They came out of the woods to a water complex, and Joker got spooked. “They said Joker flipped over on me. I remember my breath being pushed out of me with such force, and when I opened my eyes I saw his four legs in the air as he was on top of me,” Polk recalled. Neither was seriously injured. Another picture showed an 18-year-old Polk consoling her horse after the spill. “I wasn’t worried about me,” she said. “All I cared about was him being OK as he just laid there.” The two competed for many years, including in four U.S. Pony Club national championships (in 1988 the duo won the preliminary division). They also qualified for the North American Young Riders Championship, which is the only FEI championship held annual in the U.S., Polk said. According to its website, FEI is the “sole controlling authority for all international events in dressage and paraequestrian dressage, jumping, eventing, driving and para-equestrian driving, endurance, vaulting and reining.”

Of her horse, Polk said, “Professionals told me he could never compete at the levels we did, [but] we proved them all wrong. We had such a close bond; he put his whole heart and soul into every competition we competed at, and never let me down.” After she retired The Joker from competition, Polk switched from eventing to show jumping with Ronan, an Irish sport horse. “We traveled everywhere; we did very, very well,” she said. The stories that Polk tells and the pictures that she shows are as numerous and colorful as the ribbons on the walls in her barn, but what resonated through each of them was Polk’s desire and motivation to show and compete. “I started babysitting when I was 12 so I could save up money for the shows,” she recalled. “I loved it. It was a huge part of my life.”

Family has always been an important component, too. Polk talked fondly of her relationships, including the bond she had with her father, John Maiko, who lived next door to Polk until he passed away earlier this year. “He was one of my biggest fans,” she said. “He traveled everywhere with me to all my events and shows, and was my biggest supporter. My mom came to as many as she could but with the farm in Connecticut, there were times she couldn’t make all of them.” While Polk, now 36, is retired from competing — she is an AVP/retail relationship manager for American National Bank — she still rides and gives a few private lessons, counting her sons among her students. Like Polk, her oldest son, Andrew, began showing when he was just 2 years old.

Although Ricky used to ride as well, Polk said her husband stays busy with his construction business and working the family’s farm. “He does everything but ride,” she said. “His dream was always to have a country life and the farm.” The family grows their own vegetables and raises cattle, hogs, chickens, milking goats and honey bees. “It’s like Old MacDonald’s farm,” Polk said, with a laugh. “We really do try to live off the land as much as possible.” As the family horses, Little Dutch Boy, Munsey and Lulu, quietly grazed in a pasture next to their home and adjacent riding ring, Polk pointed out the sweeping vistas, including Peaks of Otter and Smith Mountain gap that can be seen from the family’s front yard. The view, she said, reminds her of Ireland, where she often traveled each summer to visit with family. Now, living in Franklin County with her own family, Polk said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “The Lord has greatly blessed us, and we are truly thankful.”

oug Shelburne described a chimney fire in blunt terms: “It sounds like a freight train running through your home.” Looking at one, he said, can conjure images of a massive Roman candle atop a roof. “Make no mistake about it: Do not try to put it out yourself,” he said. “You call 911 and get out of that residence. Period.” As the owner of Bedford County-based Doug’s Chimney Sweep, Shelburne reinforces how dangerous the buildup of creosote can be on the interior of the flue. Chimney fires threaten not only the structural integrity of the chimney itself but also pose a risk to the whole of the home and those living there. An annual cleaning is imperative, he said. “Typically, a homeowner won’t know how close they are to having a chimney fire until it’s actually happening,” Shelburne said. “By that time, it’s too late. The chimney is on fire.” These blazes originate from the residue of burned wood. When a log is burned, hot smoke travels up the chimney. As it rises, however, the vapors cool and form a liquid-like substance that can dry on the walls of the flue. From there, all it takes is a particularly hot fire, a spark or an ember to ignite that highly flammable residue and create a chimney fire. Chimney cleaning is “about saving houses and saving lives. You’re out here trying to prevent damage,” Shelburne said. “Nowadays, homes are so close to each other that if one goes, you can burn a whole neighborhood down. Realistically, if you have a house 20 feet away and you have a 2,000-degree chimney fire, it can easily catch the next residence on fire.” There are several factors that contribute to the creation of creosote, but there’s only one that any good chimney sweep will point to every time: “Season your wood, plain and simple,” Shelburne said. Seasoning involves reducing the moisture levels within wood. This is done by creating a covered environment that encourages airflow. The minimum time to season hardwoods is eight months; oftentimes, a year will be more reassuring. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

“Nowadays, homes are so close to each other that if one goes, you can burn a whole neighborhood down. Realistically, if you have a house 20 feet away and you have a 2,000-degree chimney fire, it can easily catch the next residence on fire.” DOUG SHELBURNE

o ng Us Best Home Builder Two Years in a Row!

Soft woods such as pine need even longer, as much as a year and a half, to get them seasoned appropriately thanks to the sap they have inside. A target moisture level is about 20 percent, Shelburne said. A good seasoned piece of wood burns hot, constant and steady in a fireplace. “If you cut your wood, split your wood, stack your wood and cover your wood for anywhere between eight and 12 months, there wouldn’t be these buildups of creosote,” he said. Shelburne also said it’s important to let a fire burn out on its own — doing something such as pouring a glass of water on a blaze can cool it down too quickly and send heat shooting through the flue, potentially damaging the terracotta tile inside. Exhaust can then find its way into any cracks in the tile and fail to vent properly. “The job of that flue tile is to exhaust whatever vapors are burning — be it wood, be it oil, be it gas — safely out of the house,” Shelburne said. “And if

the tiles are cracked, they can’t do that effectively.” A standard annual cleaning typically runs $180 to $200, and should be carried out by someone affiliated with the National Fire Protection Association, which certifies chimney sweeps. Any home with a chimney, even ones that don’t burn wood, should be inspected annually. Shelburne said that a few times a year he encounters a home with a gas or oil furnace or a gas water heater that has a dead animal or other blockage in the exhaust, causing carbon monoxide to become trapped in the house. “This is why you’re feeling bad, this is the headaches, the stomach aches, the body aches,” he said of those cases. Shelburne admits that his craft, despite dating back centuries, is one that few people take part in anymore. But he sees immense value to what he brings to the livelihoods of those who use chimneys. He said: “A couple of hundred dollars today can save you a couple of thousand dollars tomorrow.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

here’s an intense power struggle going on at the lake with the two parties jockeying for position and territory. The turf in question is across from Smith Mountain Dam on Rock Island. The ospreys came first, arriving about eight or nine years ago to build their stick nest at the apex of a tall pine tree. Several years later, the great blue herons came and established their rookery. When the herons aren’t fishing, caring for their young in nests at the opposite end of the small island or stretching their wings to glide over the lake, they devote their time to harassing the ospreys. This epic struggle is the source of endless fascination for Tim and Judy Stauffer, who have the perfect view of the island from their Mountain View Shores home in Huddleston. Equipped with a telescope and binoculars, the couple gets an intimate view of the island’s goings-on. “When the herons first came to the island about three years ago, there was one nest, and we thought, ‘How nice,’” Judy said. “The next year there were three or four nests. This year we counted 10. The herons hover near the osprey nest, daring them to do something about this invasion.” In the spring, double-crested cormorants also populate the island. For them, it’s a rest stop along their migration route from their winter coastal abodes in the Gulf states to their northern summer homes. They stop to fish for a few weeks, Judy said, take their rest high in the trees and then move on. By mid-summer, there is no evidence the cormorants were ever there. Judy pointed out that the double crests they are named for are only apparent when the birds are breeding from March to May. Tim grew up surrounded by family members who were passionate about birds. His father and brother were instrumental in the founding the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in eastern Pennsylvania, the world’s oldest wildlife sanctuary exclusively committed to the protection and observation of birds of prey. Judy entered the picture as a bird novice. “I could recognize a cardinal and a robin, but that was it,” she said. Tim’s brother, Bill, taught her to identify birds, and her knowledge and interest quickly grew. She said she remembers the thrill she experienced when she saw her first osprey in the Minnesota Boundary Waters in late 1960. “At that time the osprey population had plummeted due to the extensive use of DDT,” Judy said. “They were on the endangered list.” Since the national ban on DDT use in 1972, osprey and other bird populations have fully recovered, she added, in some places surpassing pre-DDT population levels. When the Stauffers first came to the lake in the mid1990s, they liked to watch the ospreys that nested on 64 September/October 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

a shoal marker at the entrance to Craddock Creek. Tim and Judy said they were the only nesting osprey couple on the lake. Shearer Rumsey, who was an interpreter at Smith Mountain Lake State Park from 1999 to 2005, remembers that the nest would be torn down every year until enough people protested, and it was decided to leave the nest undisturbed. By 2001, the naturalists at the state park wanted to attract more ospreys to the lake. Rumsey enlisted Judy’s help to chair the project, a logical choice because Judy was an active member of Friends of the SML State Park and a knowledgeable bird enthusiast. Judy and the Friends of SML State Park studied the state’s rules and regulations regarding establishing

osprey arrival and departure According to Judy Stauffer, ospreys first arrived on Rock Island in 2007 or 2008. Since 2011, she has kept notes on her observations of the birds’ comings and goings. These dates are a helpful guide to check out bird activity next year, and perhaps see the remarkable sky-diving behavior as well as their nestbuilding and/or repairing and other activities.

an osprey platform (once a nest is built, it cannot be removed without special permission from the Department of Inland Game and Fisheries), and worked with Appalachian Power and Virginia Society of Ornithology to raise funds. The nesting platform was erected over the water at the end of the park’s Discovery Center point in 2003. It is equipped with a live camera that is streamed onto a screen in the Discovery and Visitor centers. Rumsey said that there is a new osprey nest at Hales Ford Bridge in Bedford County that was built on a power line pole. The osprey population at the lake is growing. Ospreys will return to the nests they used the previous year, and it is believed, mate for life, according to the National Park Service website. Newly mature birds often build their nests near to where they were fledged, leading to osprey colonies. Nests are a bulky mass of sticks lined with bark, sod, grasses twine, netting, paper cups and other items. The male forages for building material, sometimes breaking off dead twigs as he flies past, and presents it to the female for placement, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website. Each year ospreys add to the structure, and after generations of adding on, the website said osprey nests can grow to be as large as 10 to 13 feet deep and 3 to 6 feet wide. Ospreys begin arriving at the lake in early to midMarch, Judy said. Typically the males arrive first

osprey protection Ospreys are listed as endangered or threatened in some states, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Nationally they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which prohibits taking or attempting to take any migratory bird, nest, or eggs, unless permitted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “As natural nest sites have succumbed to tree removal and shoreline development, specially constructed nest platforms, such as channel markers and utility poles have become vital to the osprey’s recovery,” the website said.

Ospreys will be migrating south this month and won’t return until next March. The Stauffers said they saw ospreys in Florida one winter and wondered if they might be the Smith Mountain Lake birds. They learned that Floridian ospreys that stay year-round are extremely territorial and won’t allow any northern migrating osprey to stop in “their” tropical state, Judy said. Consequently, birds with summer residences in the northern states must fly all the way to South America. Young ospreys typically separate from their parents permanently, leaving for the journey south after the adults leave. Judy said they end their migration in South America, where they will remain for a year and half to mature (they still don’t have their full plumage). The birds hatched this year won’t come back to the lake until March 2018. As the Rock Island turf war is likely to continue, Shearer Rumsey said it’s important to follow the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s recommendation to stay at least 200 meters away from the birds’ nesting sites. “Rock Island is a special site that deserves to be protected from intrusion by campers as well as boaters and kayakers who land on the island to explore,” Rumsey said.

el

and engage in what is called sky-dancing. In an aerial display, the bird flies up sharply with rapidly beating wings, carrying a fish or nesting material, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website said. At the apex of his flight about 600 feet above the nest site, he hovers with his tail fanned and his talons hanging down. He then plunges down, swoops up and ascends again, repeating the ascent and dive several times. Once the female arrives, the male’s dance performance abates. Scientists believe the ritual is carried out to establish territory and advertise for a mate. After a period of courtship, female ospreys begin to lay their brownish-mottled colored eggs in late April. (Noted ornithologist Arthur Cleveland Bent called osprey eggs “the handsomest of all the hawks’ eggs” due to their color variations.) Incubation lasts around five or six weeks, the average being 37 days, the website said. By the time the babies are seven or eight weeks old, they will take their first flight. Two weeks after that, the young will start to follow the male on hunting trips, and by the time they’ve been flying for a month or two, Judy said they will begin to fish on their own.

t’s that time of year when the summer’s heat and humidity have eased their grip on the region. Even though the days are getting shorter, the weather is still ideal for hitting the lake. There’s usually less boat traffic, too, which can result in smoother sailing. The annual Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour offers the perfect opportunity for boaters and landlubbers to enjoy the lake and surrounding area while also checking out some of the lake’s most unique homes, including eye-popping entryways, kitchens, dining rooms and guest rooms, media rooms and master suites. Accessible by water or by land, these homes can offer visitors ideas for landscaping and decorating as well as provide the opportunity to learn

about new home products and services. From the water, the homes are easily identifiable by orange dock flags, and there is plenty of free parking available for motorists. Orange and black marker signs mark each turn along the roads, but it’s also helpful to use a lake map and have a GPS device handy. When heading out by water, boaters should make proper preparations, including ensuring there’s enough fuel for the trip, carrying a charged cellphone and providing everyone on board with a properly fitting life jacket that should be worn or on deck, readily accessible. It’s also important that boaters keep an eye on the weather. The tour is held over three days, rain or shine. Tickets are good for one visit per home.

2016 CHARITY HOME TOUR | HOME BY HOME

DIRECTIONS - BY LAND Tour directions begin at Bridgewater Plaza located on Virginia 122 (Booker T. Washington Highway) just south of Hales Ford Bridge, but other starting points may be used, and the homes can be visited in any order. Traffic directors will be at each home to help; notify them if any passengers need assistance (homes are not wheelchair accessible). Orange and black marker signs will be placed at all turns, but signs sometimes disappear and these directions take precedence. A lake map and GPS can be helpful.

2016 CHARITY HOME TOUR | HOME BY HOME

DIRECTIONS - BY WATER The Smith Mountain Lake Water Safety Council recommends that everyone aboard your vessel wear life jackets. At the very least, a properly sized life jacket for each occupant should be on deck (rather than stowed away in a compartment) for easy access. Dock only at docks marked with a tall orange banner and attended by Home Tour volunteers. Homes are listed in a logical by-water sequence, but retain their by-land numbers from the official guide. GPS readings are approximate. Time estimates for each segment reflect smooth water and minimal traffic. Allow extra time to wait for docking space, especially on Saturday. Beginning at Hales Ford Bridge near the entrance to Bridgewater Marina:

4 Cocrane Home

951 Parkway Avenue, Moneta

Travel downstream (toward Smith Mountain Dam). House will be on your right just beyond channel marker R-21A. Time depends on where you start, but allow 15-20 minutes from Hales Ford Bridge. (GPS 37:05’28.16N; 79:37.25.90W)

1 Jaramillo Home

214 Park Shore Circle, Moneta

Head northeast across the Roanoke River channel toward Virginia Dare Marina (and a blue dock house). Watch for channel traffic. Pass channel marker WC-1 on the left, then the marina’s no-wake buoys. The Jaramillo home — tan with large windows overlooking the water — is the fourth dock on the left after the marina and just before a blue house. (5-7 minutes, GPS 37:06’81.62N; 79:36’27.21W)

2

5

Boyer Home

Wisnieski Home

1114 Shady Point Road, Huddleston

Exit Compass Cove and angle right, heading downstream and leaving Rabbit Island/R-11 on the right. Steer toward Vista Pointe, then angle left toward the “V” of Smith Mountain. Pass Parkway Marina on left and continue toward the “V.” When the lake is near full pond, you can safely pass through a pair of shoal markers between Beach and Middle islands as you steer toward the cell tower on left side of the “V.” When the lake is lower, it’s safer to continue around Middle Island. Head toward a striped lighthouse in Craddock Creek, passing C-2A, and continue toward Mariner’s Landing condos. Pass channel markers H-1 (Hatcher Creek) and C-4 on right and continue to a white fence. (15-20 minutes, GPS 37:04’41.65N; 79:33’50.21W)

101 Spinnaker Sail Court, Moneta

Backtrack out of Craddock Creek and cross the large bay on a western heading toward Vista Pointe. Pass B-1 into the Blackwater River and angle across the channel to round channel markers B-2, 4, 6 and 8 as you head upstream. You’ll pass the house featured in the movie “What About Bob?” and a small island. Angle into the cove beyond the island, just before channel marker B-10. The dock is seventh on the left. (25-35 minutes, GPS 37:03.18.89N; 79:37’58.04W)

3

7

Strup Home

Schoenberg Home

Head southwest toward the Park Place water tower, entering the “S-curve” below R-21. Exit “S-curve” at R-17 and continue straight toward two islands off to the right. Stay outside those islands, rounding marker R-15 into the cove beyond. The house will be ahead — gray with lighthouse-style turret. (10-12 minutes, GPS 37:04.51.75N; 79:37’36.24W)

Continue down right side of the Roanoke River channel, past The Boardwalk, Windmere and an undeveloped point. Round channel marker R-11A and turn right into Compass Cove. Enter the nowake area and look for a beige home on the right with a flagpole. (5-7 minutes, GPS 37:03.43.55N; 79:36’50.60W)

145 Atlantic Avenue, Moneta

6

19 Navigation Point, Moneta

8

Thomas Home

Dewar Home

Exit the cove by rounding B-10 on your right and continue past the cathedral home and around the large Cape Cod home on the next Waverly point. The Thomas home is the sixth dock on the far shore of that cove — the address is posted on dock house. (5 minutes, GPS 37:02.674N; 79:38.924W)

Return to the Blackwater River channel and continue upstream, passing the entrance to Gills Creek on the right at B-12 and through the Blackwater River’s mini-S-curve at channel markers B-19 through B-22. 4. Cocrane Home 951 Parkway avenue, Moneta Located in Park Place just above the “S-curve,” the Cocrane home looks out on the Roanoke River’s main channel. The design and layout culminate 15 years of the couple’s favorite Charity Home Tour features. This two-plus level home affords one-floor living, a big water view, loft and a bonus room over the garage. The home is decorated with family heirlooms and furniture collected from Navy assignments in Europe and Asia. The lower level features a kitchen, guest suite, exercise room and Rick Cocrane’s office with Norwegian trolls. Don’t miss their granddaughter’s hidden playroom! The dock house has a unique window pulley system.

5. Wisnieski Home 101 Spinnaker Sail Court, Moneta Although Jeff Tester built this Waverly home, it was finished almost entirely by the homeowners. They did the stone work on the two fireplaces, installed all the wood flooring, the tile work in the bathrooms and kitchen, made built-ins, and after watching the kitchen installers, created the lower level bar with cabinetry. The man cave here is a huge workshop — don’t miss it. It’s downstairs near the equally enviable feminine craft room. A funky office room near the entry features a collection of matchbooks on the wall. Outside a large patio and fire pit were built by the homeowners.

6. Thomas Home 629 Island PoInte drIve, Moneta In Waverly, the Thomas home shows what creativity and vision can achieve with an outdated home. The couple transformed it to ultra-modern with sleek lines in kitchen cabinets from Spain, new stylish ash flooring and opened spaces that were created by removing walls in the redesign process. The sunken living room with fireplace now has taller doors to a covered porch with vaulted ceilings. Sunrise and sunset views were the selling point three years ago when they bought the house. Master bedroom and bath were completely reconfigured with a walk-in shower and custom cabinetry throughout. There’s also a must-see antique clock collection on the lake level.

7. Schoenberg Home 19 NavigatioN PoiNt, MoNeta Situated in Compass Cove, the Schoenberg home is just two years old and has lovely, wide water views toward the mountain. The home has 10-foot ceilings, and beautiful crown moldings add architectural interest. The living room is open to the dining room and adjacent porch. Master bedroom and two guest rooms are on the main level for easy, one-floor living. The lake level has two guest bedrooms and a family room with game table and an antique family heirloom shuffleboard game. A winding stone walkway leads to the dock on this fairly flat lot.

8. Dewar Home 990 Three QuarTer PoinT road, WirTz The Dewar home home is quite unique! Its earthy mauve and green exterior blends into the environment, making it look as if it had been sitting on Three Quarter Point for 40 years, instead of 15. The living room has a wooden barrel ceiling and a stacked stone fireplace that rises up two levels. The Dewars purchased the home two years ago, but it comes with a pedigree. It was designed by former lake artist Barbara Burlingame, with husband Steve serving as the general contractor. There’s a covered screened porch with a fireplace off the kitchen. A lower level bedroom has a Nancy Drew collection. There are five swings placed around the property. It’s an easy walk from the dock to the house.

In case you missed its visit to the lake in 2011, Miss America IX will be making an appearance at this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show. This historic vessel, owned by Charles and Diane Mistele of Bluffton, South Carolina since 1970, has quite the pedigree. In 1930, renowned speedboat racer Gar Wood claimed the Harmsworth Trophy, the sport’s top prize, with Miss America IX. The following year — once again with Wood driving — Miss America IX made history as the first boat to reach 100 mph, topping out at 102.256 mph. When Mistele first spotted it in 1968, the 30-foot vessel was in disrepair. “It was not in good shape,” Mistele said in an interview with Smith Mountain Laker magazine in 2011. “It had not been in the water since 1932. There were no engines. It was basically a bare boat with no utility value, just historic value.” Mistele gave his card to the owner with a note to contact him if he ever planned to sell the boat. Two years later, he got the call. After a “spirited discussion” with Diane, Mistele bought the boat. While he got the boat back in the water, it wasn’t

88 September/October 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

until about 10 years ago that Bill Morgan, Mistele’s friend and owner of Hacker Boat Company, one of the oldest builders of wooden motorboats, took on Miss America IX as a preservation project. “There’s a difference in preserved and restored,” Mistele said. “If a boat has 60 percent of its original wood, it’s preserved. All the mahogany that you see on it is original with exceptions.” Since that time, the Misteles committed to traveling with Miss America IX to shows. In 2014, Mistele was inducted into the Hagerty Marine Hall of Fame for his contributions to the antique and classic boat movement. “From the moment that Mistele purchased Miss America IX, he knew the boat belonged in the water, not a museum,” according to his biography on the Hagerty Marine Hall of Fame website. “In fact, of the five Harmsworth Trophy boats that still exist, only Miss America IX still gets wet, often in the name of educating young people.” Now in its 26th year, the Smith Mountain Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show is free and open to the public. In addition to the display of antique and classic boats, there will be boat rides, craft and food vendors and activities for children.

Bedford County Fair The annual fair, which returned in 2015 after a nearly 45-year hiatus, highlights the area’s agriculture, industry and community. Scheduled events will include equine demonstrations,

Timing is everything. Making award-winning wine takes time. Roger Furrow, owner of Hickory Hill Vineyards in Moneta, is grateful for the gift of time. Five years ago, Roger went into cardiac arrest after a routine stress test at Centra Medical Group Stroobants Cardiovascular Center in Moneta. Chad Hoyt, MD, and Laura Bollard, RN, sprang into action, performing CPR to save his life. Within minutes, Centra ONE landed and they were flown to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital where cardiologists discovered three blockages and Roger underwent a triple bypass heart surgery. The winemaker treasures every day on the family vineyard. Each grape harvested builds upon a craft requiring patience and time. Roger credits his cardiologist, surgeon and nurses for Roger Furrow Owner, Hickory Hill Vineyards

t happens each September. As the community pools close out the summer and the mornings become just a wee bit cooler and the hours in the day grow fewer, a slight buzzing begins in my brain. Something is in there, peaking around the corner and beckoning me to come hither. There it is … Fall! Why do I love fall? It’s not the wearing of a trusty ‘ol worn but still comfy sweater. Nor is it the spectacular show we are privy to each year here in Virginia as the leaves turn their brilliant shades of orange, red and yellow. No, for me the thrill of the fall season is punctuated by the emergence of the annual ritual known as the fall festival. I’m a true believer in all things that materialize as the fall festival season begins. I’ve dragged the Hubs through acres of pumpkin patches on the hunt for the ugliest of gourds. Why the most unsightly? Because I want to bring home the one little gem that no one else wants. Give me your dimpled, your lopsided, and your misshapen, yearning to be jack-olanterns. You’ll find me most fall weekends scouring the Virginia countryside in search of festivals that yield glorious pots of colorful mums, jars of pickled okra, bags of addictively sweet kettle corn and tubs of rich apple butter. I also usually go for the bushels of pre-picked apples. There was a time when I would trek through apple orchards and pick the fruit myself. But, I’m getting old, or maybe it’s laziness. the makings of a couple of pies and no one is the wiser. However, in the interest of full disclosure, there is one element of the fall festival experience to which I am not enamored. It is the sole festival feature that should be avoided whenever possible. Unfortunately, there will come a time in the lives of all festival revelers when you will be forced to stare into the belly of the beast. I am, of course, referring to the dreaded port-a-potty. These dark green plastic closets of despair are a staple of fall festivals and should be used only as your last resort. Nonetheless, even when you take all precautions before leaving home and limit your intake of freshly pressed apple cider, sometimes ya just gotta go. Here are a few port-a-potty survival tips: Be prepared. Do not leave home without a travel packet of baby wipes and a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Trust me, most port-a-potties run out of toilet paper early in the day. Practice your squatting technique. You’ll want to limit the touching of any surface within the port-apotty. If you’ve ever wondered if the squats at the gym are worth it, here’s your answer. Do not look down. Whatever you do, never, ever, look down into the dark blue liquid. The contents are the stuff of nightmares. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Wishing you all a joyous fall festival season. If you find an ugly pumpkin, please consider giving it a good home.
