arah Imanu was called by Chazal one of the four most beautiful women who ever lived.

The Parsha opens when HASHEM tells Avram to leave Charan and go to the land of Cannan. When Avram arrives, there is a famine in the land and he is forced to go down to Egypt. Along the way, he notices his wife and says: “Behold, now I know that you are a beautiful woman”. Rashi, in the name of the Medrash, explains that up until this point Avrohom Avinu didn’t notice his wife’s physical appearance. Because they were traveling, the situation caused him to become aware of it, and he now recognized that she was a beautiful woman. This Rashi is difficult to understand since we know that HASHEM gave beauty to women so that they find favor in their husbands’ eyes. To allow a couple to bond together as one unit, HASHEM created many features. One of these is a woman’s beauty -a husband notices her appearance, it enters his heart, and increases the love and attraction he feels towards to her. In fact, a man is not allowed to marry a woman without first seeing her, for “when he sees her, she may be ugly in his eyes.” The Torah approach to a successful marriage is not to ignore the physical, but rather to understand that it is a tool to be used for greater devotion and attachment of husband to wife. So how is it that Avrohom

The answer to this question seems to be that because of the great level of spirituality they were both on, matters of physical beauty were irrelevant. Apparently Avram was on the level of loving his wife Sari, totally and completely for her inner beauty- for who she was as a person. The external wouldn’t have helped or hurt. If her physical beauty would have added a dimension to the love and devotion that he felt towards her, we have to assume that he would have used it as such. Rather, it was something that wouldn’t have added to his already-powerful bond and attraction towards her. What we see from this is an amazing

illustration of the great spiritual planes the Avos were on. To Avrohom and Sarah, it wasn’t that the physical took a back seat; it was irrelevant; it didn’t weigh in at all. They lived on such a pure level that they bonded as a couple with a complete and utter devotion without any need of the physical drives that HASHEM put into mankind to create that bond. A recent example of this concept is from the book, A Tzaddik in Our Times. Not long after Reb Aryeh Levin lost his wife, he was seen on Purim day holding a picture of her. Someone commented, “One isn’t supposed to be sad on Purim.” Reb Aryeh answered, “Holding this picture only brings me joy.” And he went on to say, “The more that time passes, the less I remember what she looked like, yet the more that I remember who she was, and what she did.” It is important to remember that in our own lives and marriages, the physical elements are important. A wife should do her best to make herself attractive to her husband, and a husband should do his best to make himself attractive to his wife. These are tools that HASHEM has given us to help create a powerful attachment that withstands time and the travails of life. The end goal isn’t the physical, but it is a key element and driving force in a successful marriage and Torah home. And H-Shem remembered Noach and all of ‫ךמחל‏ בערל‏ ‏ סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ the wild animals and livestock that were with him in the teivah, and H-Shem passed a wind over the earth and the waters calmed down. Rashi tells us that a spirit of regret and forgiveness passed over H-Shem as he stopped the terrible punishment that the world was undergoing for its sins. Indeed, this possuk is mentioned in the tefillos of Rosh Hashana to awaken divine mercy and compassion in our times of danger, when every aspect of our lives is judged and decided upon. The Ohr Hachaim asks a question, why did the memory of Noach not suffice to calm the angry winds of punishment? Why did H-Shem add the memory of the animals too? The answer he gives is an important lesson to us. Noach was a tzadik, he kept his virtue even when the world was deteriorating fast.

STORY This past summer was a dangerous period for swimmers at the Jersey shore. Abnormal riptides have endangered many lives with an increased number of fatalities. The government has issued warnings at certain times not to swim in the ocean, because of the fear of strong under – currents that can sweep people away, even relatively good swimmers. Reb Noach is a yungerman in Lakewood, who works hard for parnassah, while keeping many hours of learning time in Beis HaMedrash. On Sunday after isru chag, he had this story to tell his friends in Bais HaMedrash. On chol hamoed, he went to a local secluded beach and went swimming. He was unaware of the possible dangers and he was

enjoying his chol hamoed trip, when a strong riptide grabbed hold of him dragging him out to sea. He tried to fight it, tried to swim out of it, to no avail and he saw that his life was seriously in danger. He said Shema out loud, crying out to H-Shem desperately begging to live while simultaneously preparing for his inevitable death, seeing no way out of his predicament. Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, a surfer passed him by, noticing his distress. The surfer told him to grab hold of his surf board and brought him back to his family and to safety. He had no idea where this surfer came from or what zechus he would have to have his life saved in such a miraculous way. Shaking with emotion, he remembered one zechus he could have had that would have saved his life. Shortly before yom tov, he had donated a seudas aniyim at the Bais HaTavshil and Hachnosas Orchim of Lakewood. The zechus of needy people quieting their hunger on his expense is worthy of saving his life and providing his wife and children with a father and provider. Reb Noach spoke to his Rebbe, one of the ziknei roshei Yeshivos in America, asking him if this zechus is what helped him. His Rebbe answered “The Torah tells us ‫צדקה תציל ממות‬, how can we say differently?” The Bais HaTavshil is grateful for the opportunity to help a person in this way, to have a part in saving his life. But Reb Noach will never forget this experience and the lesson learnt. HILCHOS SHABBOS

Yet the merit that saved him in this case is the fact that he selflessly helped out all of the animals in the teivah. They were helpless, far from their natural habitat, and the only one they could rely on was Noach, who devoted his whole life to helping them.

This zechus, of helping out the helpless, of providing basic sustenance to those who cannot provide it for themselves, is the Torah’s message to us how to save ourselves from the mabul that may be turning over the world, the tzaros that are at our doorstep can be prevented by using this simple, yet powerful remedy.

Flexibility Flexibility declines by 5% with each decade of life and that can impact the reﬆ of your training. What’s problematic is moﬆ people don’t devote enough time to flexibility training. That’s because it doesn’t burn a lot of calories and doesn’t deliver the same kind of visible returns you get from aerobic and ﬆrength exercise. But, remember, loss of flexibility will impact you at some point if you don’t take action. As you age, warm-ups should be longer and you should end each workout with ﬆretching to lengthen the muscles you juﬆ worked. However, ﬆatic ﬆretching BEFORE a workout can reduce ﬆrength and power. So, keep your pre-workout ﬆretches dynamic and part of your warm-up. Save the ﬆatic ﬆretches until the end. Yoga is another type of workout that improves flexibility. *Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
