T
he Torah tells us that if a sheep or goat is killed while grazing, it is called a treifa and should be given to the dogs to eat. Rashi explains that this is a reward for what the dogs did. When the Jewish People left Mitzraim, not a single dog barked. Since that was a kiddush HASHEM, for generations all treifas are to be fed to the dogs in repayment for what they did. ³ HOW CAN A DOG BE ENTITLED TO REWARD?
This Rashi is difficult to understand as we are dealing with animals. Animals are instinctual in their reactions. Granted, they can be trained to act in a particular manner, but they don’t have a conscious “I” that can weigh the different options and decide to act or not to act. They don’t have free will. In all of the physical Creation, only man was given that capacity. So how can a dog receive reward for its actions? ³ UNDERSTANDING REWARD AND PUNISHMENT
One of the most basic tenets of our belief system is that nothing happens by chance. HASHEM created, maintains, and orchestrates this world. In truth, man can accomplish nothing in this world. Every action and every outcome is determined and controlled by HASHEM. If Reuvain was predestined to live to be 120, I can neither harm him nor help him. HASHEM will insure that His decree is fulfilled – and there is nothing that I can do to change it. Man is in effect powerless. This leaves him in a circumstance of being able to accomplish very little on this planet. The outcomes are already set. To allow for reward and punishment, HASHEM created a system whereby it is considered as if man determined the outcome. If I am the one acting on the scene, the result is attributed to me. It is credited to my account even though that outcome was inevitable – because HASHEM had so planned it.

In our case above, if Reuvain received a judgment on the previous Rosh Hashanah that his time was in fact up, then he will die this year, whether by my hands or through some other cause. However, I might well be permitted to be his murderer. It might come about that I will be allowed to pull the trigger on a gun, and from that shot he will die. If this occurs, I will be held accountable. I am considered the one who killed him, even though his death was decided long before I picked up the gun. If I weren’t on the scene, he would have been hit by a car or a falling tree, but because of my choice, I am considered the one who did the act. I was allowed to become his murderer. And as such, I am responsible for his death. So too, if someone intended to help Shimon and succeeded, we understand that good was coming to Shimon because HASHEM decided long ago. That is what he deserved. Had that individual not been on the scene, that same good would have come to Shimon through any one of many vehicles that HASHEM uses to run this world. Nevertheless, since that service came through the hands of an individual, that person is credited with the act. It is considered as if he did it.
³ THROUGH THE DOGS A GREATER KIDDUSH HASHEM CAME ABOUT
The answer to Rashi seems to be that via the dogs, there was a greater kiddush HASHEM. Everyone, both the Mitzrim and the Jews, saw a greater revelation of HASHEM’s hand because as an entire nation walked out, not an animal stirred. Through the animals a greater good was brought, and for that they deserve reward. Granted they didn’t intend it — they are animals — but through them came a good, and that is attributed to them. For that, they deserve reward. There is a tremendous lesson for us in this concept. Every action that we perform affects others. If, in my business dealings, I act in a scrupulously honest manner and another Jew sees this and he then adopts that practice, I am given credit for his increased honesty. That is true even if he long ago forgot that I was the source of his change. Even though I didn’t intend it and may not be aware of it, through my actions he changed, so I am considered responsible for that difference. Everything that he does because of this impression is attributed to me.

Our actions count beyond what we imagine — even if they aren’t on the highest level of perfection.

HILCHOS SHABBOS
This week's Parsha starts off with the contrast between Yisro and Amalek. Whereas Amalek's reaction to the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim was to come and fight a war with Klal Yisroel, Yisro came to join Klal Yisroel. This attitude was a product of his original connection to Moshe Rabbeinu back in Midyan.

When Moshe Rabbeinu arrived in Midyan, Yisro encouraged his daughters to invite Moshe Rabbeinu to eat a meal in his house. This meal started a chain of events, which culminated in Yisro having descendants who sit in the Lishkas Hagazis in the Beis Hamikdosh, a rare privilege. Most of the workers had no idea how the factory worked and would not recognize this theft even if they saw it. One day, another worker in the factory by the name of Sergei noticed the siphoning pipe and realized what was happening. He hid at

The police were happier to accuse a wealthy Jew than a poor gentile, and they came to arrest Reb Shmuel. He had no idea what they wanted from him and when they showed him the siphoning pipe cleverly hidden in the corner of the factory, he told them honestly that this is the first time he had seen or heard of this and that his workers were stealing from him as well as from the government. He could be sent to Siberia, forced to pay a huge fine and have all of his assets seized. His life, as calm as it was until now, became a nightmare. In his troubled state, his only option was to go to his Rebbe to intercede for him in Heaven. Rabbi Baron went to Lubavitch and waited his turn for yechidus in the Rebbe’s room. He spent his waiting time preparing himself to understand his Rebbe’s words and to be a worthy vessel for blessings. He said Tehilim slowly and learned Mussar to humble his attitude and genuinely appreciate what yechidus was about. His turn finally arrived, the Gabbai ushered him into the Rebbe’s room, and with a broken heart and a humbled spirit, he gave his kvittel to his Rebbe. The Rebbe offered him a seat, but he knew the protocol and remained standing as the Rebbe read his kvittel. He summarized the story to his Rebbe, ending with a cry “ !?מאין יבא עזריFrom where will my assistance come?” His dismal chances in front of a probably anti-Semitic judge were in the forefront of his consciousness as he poured out his heart to his Rebbe. The Rebbe Reb Shmuel of Lubavitch gave him a warm Berocho and told him “Be sure to give tzedoko with an open hand, but when you hear someone describing his troubles with the words מאין יבא עזריbe sure to help him fully. When you fill the איןof your friend, Hashem will fill your איןand bring your Yeshua." Reb Shmuel Baron left his Rebbe’s house with a lighter heart. Now he knew what he had to do and he was sure that the merit of the Rebbe’s berocho would come to his assistance and save him. He returned home and prepared for his trial with his lawyers, with the knowledge that the actual hearing would take place in Heaven, on the Rebbe's terms. He was sure to give tzedoko with an open hand and heart and waited to hear the words that the Rebbe had told him to look out for. To be continued

ave you ever come across those people who are always upbeat, always perky, and always bursting with good cheer? Sometimes I love people like that, and sometimes they annoy me and I can’t relate to them. I’ll admit it; I’m not always in a jolly mood. Sometimes I feel drained, listless (like the proverbial man in the grocery store), and simply not in the mood to bounce around and tell jokes. It’s called being human. Though we should always try to put on a happy face and to keep smiling, sometimes it seems harder than other times and that’s OK. In fact, as I write this, I know I’d rather be hunkering down under my covers and blocking out everything. But deadlines are deadlines, and I’ve got to find something inspirational in this. And I think I have. With Tu B’shvat right around the corner as I write this, I got to thinking about what we celebrate. It’s the New Year of the Trees, when in some metaphysical way they are judged as people are judged on Rosh HaShana. Oddly, however, Tu B’Shvat falls out in the winter. Trees are bare - they aren’t bursting forth with leaves and flowers and luscious fruits. They are withdrawn, reserved, and appear nearly dead. Chazal tell us that on Tu B’Shvat, the sap begins to rise in the trees as they get ready for Spring. There is a rebirth, a reawakening, a small movement towards the effusive growth and bounty that will come later. Though if you look at a tree today you won’t see it, and perhaps, even the tree itself can’t sense the change coming, it is there. And that’s what I found inspirational. Man is compared to a tree. Just as trees produce offspring like themselves, people produce children who are very influenced by their parents. Just as trees need water, people need water, as well as Torah

which is compared to water. Just as the trees silently and invisibly transform carbon dioxide into the breathable oxygen so desperately needed by humans and animals, so are many of the most valuable contributions of human beings often hidden from view. If trees which provide air, food, wood, and so much more, have their cycles of ups and downs, then certainly it’s normal for a person to have ups and downs and they don’t have to feel guilty about it or think that they will feel this way forever. I may not be bursting with creativity right now, and I may not be ready to spout smiling niceties and positive sayings. I might feel like the trees outside in the Winter, bare and unable to produce what everyone wants from them. But that’s temporary. When Tu B’Shvat comes around, there’s the tiniest stirring inside. There’s movement towards growth and life and that’s when HaShem judges them; not a day before, when the tree simply isn’t ready yet. I don’t know if trees ever get depressed or stressed or sad (and maybe that’s why people talk to their plants – to cheer them up) but it’s so reassuring to know that even if they do, that feeling will come to an end and they will be revived and ready to blossom. As people, there are always demands on us. Tension, pressure, fear – it can be overwhelming. But we have treedom of religion. Our Torah tells us that like the trees, there WILL come a day when we’re ready to move forward again. That is encouraging and inspirational. It means that even when things seem bleak, we’re not at the end of the line. I’ve told my children that sometimes, when I feel down or unmotivated, I go to sleep early. The Arizal says that each night we return our souls to Heaven, and in the morning we are given not the same soul,
