Parshas Terumah

ne of the miracles of the Mishkan was the lechem ha-panim or showbread. Each week the Kohanim were commanded to bake twelve loaves of bread in a specific manner and then leave them exposed to the air. At the end of the week, whichever Kohanim were serving in the Mishkan would eat the still-fresh loaves. The Sefer HaChinuch explains the “reason” behind the mitzvah. It states: “Bread sustains man. Therefore, a berachah is constantly needed in it. We are commanded to do a mitzvah with bread because whatever a man uses to fulfill the will of HASHEM is blessed.” The Chinuch is telling us that the lechem ha-panim was significant in assuring the Jewish people that they would have sustenance and success in earning a living. When we focus on the concept of parnasah or sustenance, this becomes difficult to understand. In Birkas HaMazon, we say, “Hazan es ha-olam kulo b’tuvo — Who nourishes the entire world, in His goodness.” The Chovos HaLevavos explains that much like a host who invites a guest to his home is obligated to take care of that guest, if it could be, HASHEM feels an obligation to take care of each of His creations. It’s as if to say, “I brought you into this world. I have to take care of you.”

³ SUSTAINER OF ALL That being said, the Sefer HaChinuch is difficult to understand. If the Sefer HaChinuch had written that when the lechem ha-panim was baked, the Jewish people davened to HASHEM, that might have explained how this would affect earning a living. Or if it had written that when the lechem ha-panim was eaten, the Kohanim asked HASHEM for help, that would also make sense. Prayer awakens the mercy of HASHEM. However, that isn’t what the Chinuch is telling us. It is the mere fact that a mitzvah was done with bread that brought berachah to everyone’s bread. The question is: how does this function? If the Jewish people were worthy of sustenance, they wouldn’t need the lechem ha-panim, and if they weren’t worthy, how would it help?

³ LAWS OF NATURE The answer to this question is based on understanding the systems that HASHEM created to run this world. In the physical world, there are laws that govern the operation of nature. Heat tends to rise. Gases tend to expand. Heavy objects tend to fall. These are inviolable laws that HASHEM created and put into force. We refer

to them as derech ha-teva, the rules of nature. The laws of nature are exact and unforgiving. No matter how nice a guy you are, if you forget to fill up the gas tank, you car will stop. Even if you are a well-intentioned man, if you fall asleep with a cigarette in your mouth, likely it will end badly. And even if you are a loving parent, if, Heaven forefend, your child falls out of a window to the concrete below, there will be grave consequences. To the untrained eye, it looks like these laws operate outside of HASHEM. It would seem that He set the laws in motion, and once they were in force, the results just happen without Him. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Ramban explains that teva is the guideline that HASHEM uses to run the world. It is the standard operating procedure. But it is Him, totally and completely, running nature. Nevertheless, HASHEM commands us to go about things in a particular way. To grow wheat, we plant and harvest. To prepare a meal, we light a fire to cook our food. It would be improper to say, “I’ll do nothing and wait for HASHEM to provide my nourishment for me.” That’s not the way that HASHEM fashioned the world, and HASHEM won’t support us if we act that way. We have to use the system in the way that HASHEM wants it to be used. To stay healthy, we are obligated to eat properly and exercise. To earn a living, we have to get a job. While it’s true that each Rosh Hashanah, the coming year is decreed — good or bad, successful or not, healthy or with sickness — HASHEM still expects certain things from us. We have to do our part. A segment of that means using this world in the derech ha-teva, the rules of nature. At the same time, we have to understand that it isn’t our effort that earns us our daily bread. HASHEM wants us to act in a particular manner, but it’s not our actions that determine the outcome. We have to do our

part, and then HASHEM provides the results.

³ A HIGHER SYSTEM OF NATURE This seems to be the answer to the question on how the lechem ha-panim aids in the sustenance of the Jewish people. One of the rules of the upper world is that if someone engages in a mitzvah with pure intentions, that causes berachah to come to the thing he used in the mitzvah. This is one of the decrees that HASHEM put into existence with the creation of the world. It is as much a part of nature as is gravity, density, and the speed of light. The Torah is revealing one the rules of that system here: use it properly and these results happen. Just as working to earn a living is using the world in the way that HASHEM wants, so, too, is using the upper world systems. ³ MA’ASER GUARANTEES PARNASAH This helps us understand the Gemara that states, “Aser kedei lehis’asher — Give tithes in order to become wealthy” (Ta’anis 9a). The Torah guarantees that if you give a tenth of your income to tzedakah, not only won’t you be poorer because of it, you are guaranteed to end up with more money. And this is the one area in which a person is allowed to test HASHEM. Try it and you are guaranteed that the formula will work. We might be tempted to ask the same question here. What difference does giving ma’aser make? If HASHEM determined on the previous Rosh Hashanah that you will earn a certain amount of money, the decree is set, and that is the amount you’ll make. Why should the amount you give to tzedakah matter? The answer is that just as there is a protocol to the mundane aspects of earning a living, so, too, is there a protocol for what we do with the money. One of the provisos that HASHEM built into the world is that giving ma’aser will not cost you. It’s as if a flex account is set up on Rosh Hashanah. This is the amount you will earn. If you give a tenth of your income, you will earn more. If you don’t, you will earn less. A financial advisor might not be able to explain it, but it is HASHEM’s world. He created the system, and He alone makes the rules. The more we focus on these concepts, the more we understand that HASHEM wants us to use the world in particular ways, and it is He alone who controls all outcomes. HILCHOS SHABBOS

The Ramban in the beginning of this week’s Parsha explains the sequence of the Parshiyos of the Torah. He tells us that after the Aseres HaDibros, the Torah explains them all in greater detail, starting with the halachos of Avoda Zara as a clarification of the first two. The Parsha of Mishpotim, with all the laws of money, is an elucidation of the aveira of ‫לא תחמוד‬. When a person knows precisely to whom money is owed, to whom it belongs and what his monetary responsibilities are, he can know how to prevent himself from craving other people’s possessions.

We can stretch the thought further as we continue through the Parsha. After finishing the halachos of money, some other halachos, mostly of ‫בין אדם לחבירו‬, are given. Then we have a puzzling possuk ‫מלאתך‬ ‫ודמעך לא תאחר‬. The Torah has not yet told us what these mitzvos are, yet we are told to be sure to fulfill the mitzvos of Bikurim and Terumah in the correct order. It would seem that after we know to whom our money belongs, everybody is in charge of their own account, we can proceed to do with our money that for which has been given. Why do people have riches? Why are

Is it permissible to fill a pitcher with water from a water cooler? The use of a water cooler on Shabbos is questionable in general, specifically when the cooling mechanism is not currently operating. In addition, it is likely that dispensing a large amount of water at one time will cause the cooling mechanism to be immediately activated since a large amount of un-cooled water enters the machine at once. Therefore, the pitcher should either be filled before Shabbos, or on Shabbos when it can be discerned that the cooling mechanism is active. Similarly, if the jug of bottled water has finished it should not be replaced with a new bottle on Shabbos, since the new water flowing into the cooler at room temperature will immediately activate the cooling mechanism. When one uses a water cooler, the desired effect is for warm water to enter and flow through the cooling mechanism and emerge cold. The intent differs, however, when opening a refrigerator, since the food in a refrigerator remains at a consistently cold temperature. Therefore, when the refrigerator door is opened the intent is not for the mechanism to turn on, even though that may occur.

STORY Recap: Reb Shmuel was falsely accused by his workers of cheating the government of its taxes. The Rebbe Maharash of Lubavitch told him to fill the ‫ אין‬of another person and that is how he will be saved.

Reb Shmuel went home to start preparing for his trial. He made sure to hire the best lawyers that he could afford, knowing that he was facing a serious problem. He may have been absolutely convinced of his innocence, but that would be of no assistance in the face of an anti-Semitic judge or jury. He reviewed his case with his lawyers as continues on other side well as he could and collected an impressive roster of character witnesses to attest to his honesty. They also brought ample proof that he was not technically savvy enough to install the spigot and to think of this ingenious idea to fool the Russian government. In the back of his mind however, Reb Shmuel knew that none of his efforts were relevant. If the judge or the jury didn’t like him or Jews in general, a reasonable assumption in Czarist Russia, they would not care for his character, technical ignorance or even proven innocence. He would find himself on the next train to Siberia, with no option of appeal. With all of his work in preparation for the trial, he did not neglect the spiritual front, where he made sure to fortify himself as best as he could. Although Reb Shmuel was always an ehrliche person, who was careful to daven properly and set aside many hours for Torah study, now he redoubled his efforts. His davening only took place after hours of mental preparation and he found time to add to his learning. He also made sure that his learning was on a higher plane, with more depth and more concentration, and he was more careful to finish the sugyos that he learnt with their relevant pesak halacha. In ‫ בין אדם לחבירו‬he also made sure to increase his energies. He was more careful with his mood at home, so his family should not suffer from his tension. He acted kinder to his wife, children, employees and servants. He was also more careful with tzedoko and gemillus chesed. Any beggar that came

The answer is; to provide for others. As soon as you know the state of your bank account, you know how much you can spend on the really important things in life, on those items that you really want. And what are they? Giving Bikurim and Terumah to the Cohen!

One day, after davening, Reb Shmuel noticed that the person sitting in the next row did not look too happy. Reb Shmuel knew Menachem Yossel for The purpose of having money is giving to others. I am stuck in a pit and I have no way out.” “Oyoyoy, what is the problem? Maybe I can help?”

“As you know, I worked in a factory here in town. I made a meager salary, but it was just about enough to keep the soul in the body, and who needs more than that? A small portion of bread and a joke and life is livable. Recently, my son and daughter got engaged, and I still hoped to be able to eke together something to celebrate a chassuna. But yesterday the foreman of the factory called me aside and warned me that I was to be fired at the end of this week. He couldn’t tell me why, but he said that there is nothing I could do about it. What can I hope for now? The shiduchim will be broken, my children will stay old maids and eltere bochurim, and my family will have nothing to eat. I am three months behind on my rent too, so I won’t even ‫סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ ‫בערל‏‬ have a‫ ‏‬roof over‫ךמחל‏‬ my head when I expire from starvation.” Reb Shmuel’s heart was softened by this tale of woe, and he pulled out his wallet to give Menachem Yossel a handsome amount, something to make him feel hopeful again. He wanted him to have the good feeling of a person who has the possibility of buying something, the sensation of equality with others sitting in Bais Hamedrash. As he was stretching his fingers into his wallet, he heard Menachem Yossel adding a plaintive cry to his lament “‫מאין‬ ‫יבא עזרי‬, from where will my assistance arrive? I can’t imagine any way out of this” Reb Shmuel felt a sudden jolt in his spine. The words that his Rebbe had told him to look out for had been said. He had his orders, he knew what to do. Now his salvation was guaranteed. He took Menachem Yossel by the elbow and steered him out of the Shul and took him home with him. He overlooked Menachem Yossel’s protests and sat him down in his dining room and served him a sumptuous breakfast, the likes of which he had never seen before. Afterwards they sat down together in Reb Shmuel’s office and they worked out an exact budget, how much Menachem Yossel needed to pay off his debts, how much the chassunos would cost him and how much he needed to live. As the converstaion unfolded, Menachem Yossel started protesting, “I am not looking to get rich off this, I just need to find a wink of hope in my darkness.” But Reb Shmuel remembered the exact words that his Rebbe had used, he must fill the ‫ אין‬of someone else, and fill it he did. Not only did he pay off his debts, he made sure to buy the house in which Menachem Yossel lived from his landlord, so he would never have the yoke of rent on his shoulders. He also made sure to find him a job that could support him comfortably in the future and Menachem Yossel walked out of there a changed man. Now he was sure his prayers had been answered, he knew that his salvation was near. He only had to wait for the rest of the story to unfold in front of him. To be continued

Q; What does it take to start a real-estate career?

I started my real estate business by purchasing low-end rental properties in cash and fixing them up. I would then try to refinance them and buy more. I was very active and hands-on; we were very on top of the pulse of the market and evaluated everything before we bought.

You need to have available cash. You must also be willing to work hard. It is advisable to be a hands-on, handy type of person. You have to be a doer, able to get things done without relying on other people. You need the ability and willingness to go to the property and try to figure things out on your own before spending a lot of money on a professional.

Overtime I found other niches and opportunities. I combined real estate investing with brokerage and property management.

Q; For whom would you recommend the PCS Residential Real Estate Course? For someone who is willing to work hard, and give something the time it needs to grow. You must have the ability to survive financially until the business takes. The individual should have the ability to be hands-on with the property. One can’t expect to put money down and have the properties run on their own. A property is like a live thing; it has to be taken care of. One must be ready to take care of things right away.

Q; Please tell us about the potential in Residential Real Estate. Because residential real estate is less expensive, it’s easier to break in to. You do not need as much capital to get started as you would with commercial real estate. There are a lot of different avenues that you can explore. Once you break in, you will have exposure to other opportunities, such as finding good deals, brokerage and management, or providing services to other realestate investors. This can lead to many lucrative opportunities.

Q; Why is it important to receive proper training first? It is essential to learn from others who have done this and succeeded. We made the mistakes. Instead of making the same mistakes, you can learn from our experiences. There are some valuable tried-and-true techniques that can really help those who are starting out. There are also some fatal mistakes that people starting out can make that can cause them to lose everything (including the money that was lent to them).
