I N T R O D U CT I O N Eastern High School was built in 1923 and is one of the oldest continuously-operating high schools in the District of Columbia. Due to this historic significance, the school district decided to renovate and “right size” the existing structure to better meet the needs of the teachers, students, and the community. The exterior façade of this historic high school was restored to its original grandeur. The remaining leaded windows and oak/wrought iron doors were meticulously restored, and glass canopies and greenhouses were replaced. The interior stone and plasterwork was lovingly repaired, allowing students and visitors to appreciate an architectural masterpiece from days gone by. Where historic preservation was no longer practical— heating systems and open courtyards, as examples— renovations focused on replacement and repurposing. All building systems were replaced to increase efficiency and decrease operating costs. Open courtyards were converted to academic atriums, allowing for performances and student forums within protected, climate-controlled enclosures. Upon completion, the building offered the Eastern High School community a host of modernized classrooms, improved learning environments, and a LEED Gold certified facility.
