Business Information Commitment A key to HTK’s continued success in the dedication of our professional staff and principals. We measure the worth of our fi rm by the quality of our architects. One principal is routinely assigned to each project and remains directly responsible to the owner from project inception to completion.

History HTK has successfully provided its clients with comprehensive architectural services since the fi rm was founded in 1958. Now into our fi fth decade, HTK has continued to evolve, adding key associates and keeping an eye to the future - completing new design, addition and renovation projects throughout Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. In 1997 HTK expanded to better serve the Kansas City area with the opening of an offi ce in Overland Park,. Two of the four current partners oversee the Topeka office and two oversee the Overland Park Office.

Executive Summary

Familiarity with Applicable Codes, Regulations, ADA Standards Our staff stays current with building codes, life safety codes and ADA guidelines. One of our first tasks would be to meet with the City of Joplin code officials, Planning Department and State Fire Marshall’s Office to ensure we have a complete understanding of the codes, city standards and zoning regulations that are applicable. HTK Architects remains dedicated to public safety through the use of the model building codes and design features that enhance our environment while at the same time making our buildings safe and accessible.

CAD & BIM HTK has strived to utilize the latest in computer technology since implementing our first Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) computer over twenty years ago. Part of our business model has been to use the latest technology available enabling us to be as efficient as possible in all phases of our architectural practice while offering Clients the capabilities they deserve. HTK uses AutoDesk Revit® Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for design drawings and production of construction documents. The 3D drawing software allows us to immediately communicate conceptual ideas through rendered perspective drawings and virtual “flybys” and “walkthroughs” of the design. This visualization of a proposed concept is a valuable tool in communicating our designs to the Client. Conflicts between disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical) has always been the main source of errors in construction documents, so another major benefit of using BIM software is the ability to identify conflicts immediately in the design and construction document development process. Cost estimating accuracy is also enhanced due to quantities of materials being tracked as the 3D computer model is built in the design development through construction document phases. HTK also utilizes SketchUp® software which is an excellent tool for developing 3D site / building computer models quickly. It is a quick method of developing massing studies of different building designs on a site that can also illustrate materials and colors. Another technology that HTK utilizes is the creation of a Project Web Site for each project where the Project Team and Owner can access current project information via the Internet. The web site is a vital tool in providing effective communication between all parties throughout the design and construction process.

Teaming with a Construction Manager HTK has completed many Educational Projects in collaboration with a Construction Manager. These relationships have been successful for many reasons. First and foremost, the addition of a CM to the Project Team allows for design and construction to overlap slightly, saving the district time, allowing the school to be occupied sooner. HTK and the CM would establish a project schedule prior to the beginning of any work in order to establish a timeline for design, development of the bid documents, bidding, through completion of construction and occupancy. The CM and Architect will also work together early in the design process on the Cost Estimate assuringthe project is within the budget come bidding. Another advantage of using the CM project delivery is during construction. They will also fully understand the bid documents and design Intentions of the project as well as the Goals and Needs of the new facility. HTK welcomes the opportunity to work with a CM chosen by the Joplin School District. We have found that a CM is a tremendous asset to the design team when they are hired at the inception of the project and work with the Design Professionals and the district from inception.

Acknowledgement of Intent HTK hereby acknowledges full intent to comply with all applicable federal, state and local affirmative action requirements.

Financial Condition HTK is in very positive Financial Standing. Upon short-list we would be pleased to provide financial information and references.

BELMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HTK was hired by the De Soto School District to design Belmont Elementary using their current prototype plan. HTK reviewed the current prototype plan in conjunction with post-occupancy meetings with staff from the previously built Elementary School. Modifications were made to the design of Belmont Elementary. Changes included mirroring the gymnasium and cafeteria spaces for better circulation throughout the Activity Wing, redesign of the building entrance for access to the parking lot and bus loop and relocation of the Media Center/ Discovery area to align the classroom pod entrances and provide two additional classrooms as part of a bid alternate. Advancements include an HVAC system based on displacement air principles that deliver the air to the occupants through mechanical diffusers at an elevation more closely to the occupants, building envelope design that includes a newly developed air/ moisture insulation barrier that creates an all encompassing envelope system, Water use reduction, Stormwater retention, Water Efficient Landscaping, Use of Low-Emitting construction material & Controllability of Lighting and HVAC Systems.
