PROPOSA AL TO UPDATE CURRENT CAMPUS

July 19, 2012 Mr. Junius Scott Prine Head of School Louisville Collegiate School 2427 Glenmary Avenue Louisville, Kentucky 40204 Dear Mr. Prine, Thank you very much for the opportunity to share our thoughts and approach to the creation of a master plan for the Louisville Collegiate School. We strongly believe that facilities have a definitive impact on the learning environment, not only by creating a positive atmosphere for student-teacher interaction, but by expressing the ethos of the school community. Together, we have an opportunity to translate the vision and mission of Louisville Collegiate School into a visionary facilities master plan. We would very much like to be a part of your team as you seek to maximize your potential for your next 100 years. As you are aware, the integration of pedagogy and the learning environment has never been more important. Facilities can support, or impede, the creation of flexible learning environments. Currently, Fanning Howey is on the forefront of this national discussion. Our team will work with Louisville Collegiate School to help you develop a Master Plan Rendering, Master Plan Alternate, Concept Renderings, and Statements of Probable Cost to help you plan for a strong future. In the accompanying response to your request for our qualifications we believe that you will see that we offer an incomparable team with the following assets:  A proven collaborative process for creating forward-thinking school master plans  A successful history of helping institutions meet their clearly defined goals for the future through exemplary facilities  The expertise of national leaders in the effective integration of 21st century learning and the built environment We look forward to having the opportunity to engage you and your team in a more detailed discussion about the future of Louisville Collegiate School. Sincerely, FANNING HOWEY

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

CREATING AN EXCEPTIONAL MASTER PLAN WITH EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES PROCESS

The creation of a master plan is one of the most important tasks that a school can undertake to plan for its future. The Fanning Howey team has been assembled to provide Louisville Collegiate School with all of the resources and expertise needed to engage, contemplate, and create an innovative master plan that establishes a road map for the next 100 years. Our process will lead to a comprehensive facilities master plan that will not only address current identified space needs, but will support a continuallyevolving approach to educating students in the 21st century. Additionally, it will preserve the balance of academics, the arts, and your rich history in a responsible and transparent manner. With a fresh eye and an emphasis on national best practices, we will analyze the campus and subsequent impact of the vision of Louisville Collegiate School. Our process is extensive and collaborative. In its most simplified form, a master planning process has three parts.  The first is a thorough examination of the current and future needs of the school. Fanning Howey’s experience with the planning and design of schools throughout the country over the past 50 years will be of great benefit during this assessment and analysis segment of the process.

of the finest private schools in central Indiana.

Construction Cost: $28.5 M

Park Tudor School provides a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to students in grades PK-12. Fanning Howey has been involved in 27 projects on campus, including a new middle school building and the Ruth Lily Science Center addition in the 1980s. Later projects included the award-winning expansion of the Lower School, which established the Hilbert Early Childhood Center, as well as a new dining area/multipurpose room. In 2000 the expansion of the Upper School connected the building to the Ayres Auditorium. These projects, along with a strong commitment to educational excellence, have helped Park Tudor keep its reputation as one of Indiana’s leading college preparatory schools.

Grosse Pointe Academy Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan

The Grosse Pointe Academy wanted to bring a modern learning environment to its historic Moran Building, and do so without impacting the school’s striking Gothic exterior. A phased renovation program met these goals by rearranging program areas, reclaiming space for education, and preserving historic elements.

PROJECT DATA Client: Grosse Pointe Academy Grade Levels: K-8 Number of Students: 250 Area: 42,000 Renovated SF Construction Cost: $7.7 M

Classrooms are now 200 to 250 square feet larger and can support modern educational programs for grades K-8. New computers and plasma televisions in each classroom, and a new computer lab on the second floor, provide a technology-rich environment. The former auditorium is reimagined as a classic library with restored ornamental wood arches and paneling. On the third floor, the former attic is now a “discovered world” of art studios and classrooms. Preservation efforts brought new life to the 78-year-old building by restoring windows and doors, as well as the original Welsh tile in the main lobby. A relocated reception office allows staff to fully supervise visitors and provides a greater level of visual control.

The addition creates a dramatic new image for the north facade of the building, featuring a strong vertical element in the form of a tower and limestone pieces matching the existing building copings. The addition includes a new 2,500-square-foot dining commons that was designed in collaboration with students. The comfortable, flexible setting supports Brebeuf’s unique Personal Responsibility Time (PRT), which allows students to study alone, meet in small groups, or network with peers.

In 1999, the Academy commissioned Fanning Howey to develop a master plan that would double the capacity of the existing building and increase the school’s educational and spiritual amenities accordingly. Phase I, completed in 2001, included the construction of a new gymnasium, a new entry façade, and associated site improvements. Through the creative use of style and materials, designers conveyed the sense of tradition, honor, and dedication to serious scholarship that has been the hallmark of Kensington Academy. Phase II of the master plan will complete the modernization of all facilities and provide the finishing touches to the dramatic campus improvements. Work will include renovations to the cafeteria and lobby, the addition of a trellis/colonnade along the north front of the existing cafeteria glass wall, and the addition of a new entry canopy.

APPROACH TO PROJECT AND PROPOSED SCHEDULE Describe your project approach and the proposed schedule for each project phase. A well-conceived master plan is an essential tool for shaping a school’s educational and physical evolution. It is quite literally a roadmap to the future. Our team takes great pride in planning facilities that further educational efforts and help inspire learning- which is why we are especially excited about working with Louisville Collegiate School to help shape a facilities response to your Second Century Plan. Louisville Collegiate School has a proud history and outstanding reputation. Much of this has been credited to the faculty and staff who provide an atmosphere of academic excellence for their students. We acknowledge and embrace the fact that the master planning needs of each client are different. Although we are providing an outline of a process that we believe will lead to a master plan tailored to the specific needs of Louisville Collegiate School, we look for the opportunity to review, modify, and enhance our process to achieve all of your goals. The timeline on page 38 demonstrates the following process.

In addition to the Leadership Team, it is our experience that engaging the following stakeholders would be beneficial:  Faculty  Physical Plant  Athletics  Performing Arts  Fine Arts  Parents  Students  Neighbors An important consideration in conducting these outreach meetings will be the management of expectations. We would like people to dream, but to do so with their feet firmly planted on the ground. Our team is experienced in helping our clients obtain the appropriate input, while at the same time managing the process.

Our experience with Fanning Howey was remarkable at every level. We are very satisfied with their process and even more so with the completed Zionsville Campus Sports Complex and associated facilities. Given an existing, fully developed site, their ability to rethink the campus design, while providing impeccable valuation studies that helped us contain costs along the way, was just the guidance that we needed. We are positioned to meet our future needs and have the flexibility for future on site expansion of our high school should growth trends continue. Scott Robison, Superintendent, Zionsville Community Schools

One of the things you notice right away is the pride the kids have in the building. They walk around with their chests out saying, ‘This is my school.’ It’s like a transfusion. This was a great school and now it’s

more than that – it’s an incredible place.

(renovations to Hughes Center) with requirements for preparing temporary facilities on site while renovation of the main building was completed. The project involved renovating a 90-yearold five-story building of approximately 250,000 square feet on a constrained site. We did encounter a difficult problem with space restrictions for ductwork in existing chases, but Terry effectively resolve the problems with minimal additional cost. I would not hesitate to recommend Fanning Howey for additional projects or to other owners based on the depth of their expertise, capabilities, and professionalism. It’s important to have an architect who can guide you through the when, how, and where of school construction. That’s key to the longterm relationship. We’re doing about one school a year, so that kind of guidance is very important. Fanning/ Howey takes a great deal of pride and ownership—it’s as if they’re a part of the school district.

When I found out that our old, beautiful auditorium was going to be turned into the library, I cried. After experiencing the new space, I cried again…tears of joy. Not only do we love (the library), but the kids actually go, and read, and research, and use the space. Our library is welcoming and our students feel at home here. Wendy Jewett, Middle School Science Teacher, Grosse Pointe Academy

We are constantly learning how to use this building in different ways. Between the building itself and the technology, we have so many more opportunities than

Dr. Concetta Raimondi, Former Superintendent, Hamilton Southeastern Schools

we did in our old school. Everything about this building has enhanced our program - our ability to team, communicate, expand student activities, involve parents, and bring in the community. Does this building make a

difference? It’s like night and day. The design and delivery of V. Sue Cleveland High School Virgil Taueg, Principal, Lincoln Middle has been the highlight of my School, M.S.D. of Pike Township professional career. The community of Rio Rancho is extremely blessed and will benefit from such a marvelous facility for many years to come. The footprint of the facility meets our specific philosophical objective which is to offer students the opportunity to engage in a variety of educational courses while simultaneously being afforded the opportunity to explore areas of interest in greater depth. The flexibility of the building, as well as the individual classrooms, allows courses to vary daily. This will ensure the opportunity to teach multiple classes regularly without capital improvements. V. Sue Cleveland High School offers endless opportunities to engage in true 21st century learning and teaching via comfortable sun-lit classrooms and breathtaking views. This guarantees an engaging learning experience making V. Sue Cleveland High School one of the finest schools anywhere. Scott Affentranger, Principal, V. Sue Cleveland High School, Rio Rancho Public Schools
