Story by Fox Sports Jerry Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers' playboy owner who shepherded the NBA franchise to 10 championships from the `80s Showtime dynasty to the Kobe Bryant era, died Monday, his assistant said. Buss died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said Bob Steiner, his assistant. He was 80. He'd been hospitalized for cancer, but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure, Steiner said. A Depression-era baby, Buss was born in Salt Lake City on Jan. 27, 1933, although some sources cite 1934 as his birth year. His parents, Lydus and Jessie Buss, divorced when he was an infant. Under Buss' leadership since 1979, the Lakers became Southern California's most beloved sports franchise and a worldwide extension of Hollywood glamour. Buss acquired, nurtured and befriended a staggering array of talented players and basketball minds during his Hall of Fame tenure. Few owners in sports history can even approach Buss' accomplishments with the Lakers, who made the NBA finals 16 times through 2011 during his 32 years in charge, winning 10 titles between 1980 and 2010. The Lakers easily are the NBA's winningest franchise since he bought the club. Few owners have ever been more beloved by their players than Buss, who always referred to the Lakers as his extended family. Working with front-office executives Jerry West and Mitch Kupchak, Buss spent lavishly to win his titles despite lacking a huge personal fortune, often running the NBA's highest payroll while also paying high-profile coaches Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Always an innovative businessman, Buss paid for the Lakers through both their wild success and his own groundbreaking moves to raise revenue. He co-founded a basic-cable sports television network and sold the naming rights to the Forum at times when both now-standard strategies were unusual, adding justification for his induction into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Magic Johnson and fellow Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy formed lifelong bonds with Buss during the Lakers' run to five titles in nine years in the 1980s, when the Lakers earned a reputation as basketball's most exciting team with their glamorous Showtime style. Jackson then led Shaquille O'Neal and Bryant to a threepeat from 2000-02, rekindling the Lakers' mystique, before Bryant and Pau Gasol won two more titles under Jackson in 2009 and 2010. Although Buss was proudest of his two hands full of NBA title rings, he also was a scholar, Renaissance man and bon vivant who epitomized California cool - and a certain Los Angeles lifestyle - for his entire public life.

LeBron James fired back at Michael Jordan Miami Heat star LeBron James fired back at Michael Jordan who said he’d pick Kobe Bryant as the best player in the NBA. James, who is preparing for Sunday’s All-Star Game, said the number of NBA titles you win isn’t the key factor in deciding greatness. ―(Jordan) said he would take Kobe over me because … five rings are better than one, and the last time he checked, five is better than one,‖ James said. ―At the end of the day, rings don’t always define someone’s career. If that were the case, then I’d sit up here and say I would take (Bill) Russell over Jordan. But I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t take Russell over Jordan. Russell has 11 rings, Jordan has six. I wouldn’t do that.‖ James won his very first championship with the Heat last season. Bryant has five rings with the Los Angeles Lakers. Here’s what Jordan said that sparked James’ comments: ―Five beats one every time I look at it,‖ Jordan told NBA TV. ―And not that (James) won’t get five. He may get more than that, but five is bigger than one.‖ James has had an incredible season so far. He’s guided the Heat to a seven-game winning streak going into the All-Star break. That included an NBA-record six consecutive games where he scored more than 30 points and shot at least 60 percent from the field. James is pretty annoyed at Jordan’s comments. ―I don’t play the game and try to define who I am over what guys say or how they feel about me,‖ James said. ―It doesn’t matter to me. I play for my family, for my teammates, for my coaching staff and I play for our fans, and that’s it. What do I need bulletin board material for? My inspiration is the game I love. I don’t need nobody to pick me or not.‖ Kobe Bryant moments

Sunday's NBA All-Star Game was decided in large part by a point guard through whom the future of the league may travel, during a weekend when another point guard announced just why there’s a growing sense he, too, could dictate the shape of what’s to come in the years ahead. First and foremost was Chris Paul’s remarkable game. He dished 15 dimes, third in All-Star history behind Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas, and delivered another 20 points and four steals. It was a maestro’s performance that earned him the All-Star MVP Award and it helped lead the Western Conference to a 143-138 win over the East. ―Pretty special,‖ Paul said afterward. ―Pretty special. It’s something that definitely coming into the game I wasn’t trying to achieve or thinking that it might even be possible.‖

passes,

Added Kevin Durant: ―He had great making steals, made big buckets. He played a hell of a game congratulations to him. It was a assure playing with him.‖

It was a mesmerizing performance, one that stood out on a night when the game’s greatest put on show after show. There was Kobe Bryant going hard at LeBron James in the fourth quarter and serving up a jaw-dropping block that even shocked Durant.

―It was a great block,‖ Durant said. ―I haven’t really seen any MVP get a jumper blocked like that.‖ There were Ridiculous dunks by guys like Blake Griffin and LeBron. There was Durant pouring in a game-high 30 points.

Carmelo Anthony putting on a shooting display, Paul George making a case he belongs among the stars and Dwyane Wade silencing people like me who insist he’s losing a step. There was so much to enjoy, one could be forgiven for not adequately noticing just how surely Kyrie Irving announced his own arrival as a pillar of the game.

Once a kid, Jordan played for the love of the game Sam Smith: What I remember most fondly is the kid. There was the so-called ―Love of the Game‖ clause in Michael Jordan’s first NBA contract, the insecurities like everyone else had and the uncertainties when he first walked into the old Angel Guardian gym on the north side with the concrete under the basketball floor, and the intense competitiveness we all came to admire and respect. Though mostly it was the joy of just playing, like he didn’t have to grow up. ―The best time of my life,‖ I remember Jordan telling me that rookie season in 1984-85 about life in the NBA with a not very good Bulls team and many not very upstanding teammates. Every day, though, it was just playing, basketball and more basketball, practice and the games. Oh, the thrill of the games, and finding out he really could be as special as he hoped he might be and they said he would be. And the games never ended, the ping pong tournaments with his buddy Rod Higgins to the fierce card games well into the night with his North Carolina trio of old friends who occasionally joined him on road trips, Fred Whitfield, Fred Kerns and Adolph Shiver. It doesn’t seem that long ago, but it sounds so much so now as Jordan turns 50 years old. Michael Jordan can get an AARP card. How about that?

Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield meet again Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield stood toe to toe again, only this time there were hugs and smiles — and no bites to the ear. The ill will that marked the former champions' rivalry was nowhere in sight. Instead, they were like old friends meeting in a supermarket, which is exactly what they did on Saturday. They were at a Jewel-Osco on Chicago's South Side, where Holyfield was signing autographs and promoting his barbecue sauce. Tyson, in town performing his oneman show, made a cameo. "I just wanted to see Evander, man," Tyson said. "I love Evander. I'm forever linked with him for the rest of my life." Hard to believe those words came from the man who bit off a piece of Holyfield's ear during a fight, but the former "Baddest Man On The Planet" is showing a different side. He's baring his soul on stage, documenting his rise from Brooklyn's streets to the heavyweight championship and subsequent fall from grace. It's all there, from his drug use to his relationships to ex-wife Robin Givens, new wife Kiki, promoter Don King, trainer Cus D'Amato and, of course, a rape conviction that left him behind bars for three years in the 1990s. He's taking it to 36 cities after a run on Broadway. Saturday night was the second of two scheduled performances in Chicago. And before he hit the stage, he hit the supermarket. He wrapped Holyfield in a big hug and was all smiles as they chatted and posed for pictures, the fans going wild the whole time. "The show is good," said Holyfield, who saw it in Las Vegas. "The show is showing his way of coming back, being able to come to an agreement, come to an acknowledgment of what he'd done good and what he'd done wrong and to get over it. When people don't get past their problems, they never come to an understanding."

Sony reveals PlayStation 4, fires first shot in the next console war After months of rumor and speculation, Sony has revealed its new game machine — the PlayStation 4 — as well as a new controller with a touchpad a "share" button and light bar. "Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation as a company," said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, as he took the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Wednesday. "Today we will give you a glimpse into the future of play.“House told a room packed full of journalists that the new machine — the successor to the PlayStation 3 — would take the moniker PlayStation 4. Sony then revealed the new touch-sensing DualShock controller as well as a new "stereo camera" that works in conjunction with the controller (see video below.) Sony said the PlayStation 4 will launch "holiday 2013" but did not reveal a specific date or a price. Sony also did not show off what its new gaming hardware will look like, revealing only the controller and pictures of the new camera. Mark Cerny, the PS4's lead system architect, did outline some of the innards that will be powering the machine explaining, “The architecture we chose is like a PC in many ways.” He said the PlayStation 4 will feature an X86 CPU and a whopping 8 gigabytes of unified system memory. (For more on that, check out our story here.) David Perry — CEO and founder of Gaikai — also took the stage Wednesday. Sony bought his game streaming company last year. He explained that integration of the streaming service with the PlayStation Store will allow gamers to instantly try games before they buy them

After being transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, the junior at New Garden Friends High School died. He was 17. The circumstances of his death are still unknown to the public. ―We called 911 immediately, and a nurse gave him artificial respiration,‖ Simon Johnson, CEO of Quality Education Academy, told The Greensboro News & Record. ―We’re very saddened by what happened.‖ Level, a 6-foot-5 guard, was considered one of the state's top prospects for the Class of 2014. This is a huge eye-opener for me personally. Put issues aside and enjoy the game. #RIPJoshLevel," N.C. State freshman Rodney Purvis, a North Carolina native, tweeted on Tuesday night. In a recent interview with the basketball website BallisLife, Level's passion for the game was evident. "Most guys lack … hustle and heart and desire to be out there," Level said into the camera. "To play this game, you have to have a lot of heart

High school swimmer dies during workout February 23 2013 Tragedy struck the Studio City Harvard-Westlake campus on Friday when junior swimmer Justin Carr was involved in a "tragic swimming accident." According to the Los Angeles Times, paramedics were called when Carr collapsed during a school workout. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Carr was 16 years old. Head of Harvard-Westlake, Jeanne Huybrechts, informed parents via email of Carr’s passing. "It is with profound sadness that I write to inform you of the tragic loss of our student and a member of HW’s 11th grade, Justin Carr," said Huybrechts in an email obtained by the Times. "Justin died unexpectedly late this afternoon. It is impossible for me to summarize all that Justin was in just a few sentences. Scholar, athlete, singer, actor, ebullient child, he was an extraordinary young man by any measure." Last season, as a member of the junior varsity team, Carr was chosen as the Swimmer of the Meet when the Wolverines swam against Agoura High. As stated by Huybrechts in the email to Harvard-Westlake parents, Carr had plenty of talents away from the pool. Last April, it was announced he was one of 42 esteemed talents selected to be a member of the 2012-13 Harvard-Westlake Chamber Singers. Carr, a tenor, was scheduled to sing in a European tour next month, according to a source. Carr was also the school’s Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club (BLACC) leader. He was a part of a group that recruited Samuel L. Jackson to come speak on campus as a part of Black History Month festivities. He was also a leader in the group’s community service efforts. The school has an 8 a.m. assembly scheduled for Monday, according to reports. School officials are meeting Saturday morning and will release a statement with further information in the afternoon.

Oscar Pistorius bail hearing in chaos By Rohit Kachroo and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing descended into chaos Thursday as the lead detective investigating the killing of the Olympian's girlfriend was removed from the case amid attempted murder charges of his own. Warrant Officer Hilton Botha is due to appear in court in May accused of opening fire on a minibus taxi in 2011. Charges against him were originally withdrawn but reinstated on Wednesday at the behest of the state prosecutor, police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila told Reuters. The revelation, combined with Botha’s struggle to answer key questions under cross-examination on Wednesday, boosted the confidence of Pistorius’ defense lawyers and his family. "We're going to win," one relative said as the family entered the courtroom at the start of the third day of a hearing examining whether the double-amputee should get bail. The sprinter is accused of the premeditated murder of model Reeva Steenkamp, 29. "We're going in the right direction," one of Pistorius' uncles added. There was further drama when an unidentified woman addressed the court, saying she wanted Pistorius' mental health to be examined. Her intervention was dismissed. Later, there was a brief adjournment because of an unspecified "threat" to the court building. The chaotic scenes in court meant that a bail decision, which had been due on Thursday, was postponed until Friday. Dubbed the "Blade Runner," Pistorius maintains he fired into his locked bathroom in a panic over a possible prowler. However, prosecutors say the 26-year-old put on his artificial legs and stalked Steenkamp to the bathroom to kill her. Magistrate Desmond Nair said police had showed a lack of urgency in obtaining phone records, and asked Botha why he had given evidence in English rather than his first language, Afrikaans. After discussion of the Botha revelations, lawyers from both sides began making their final arguments. Pistorius’ defense lawyer referred to the "poor quality" of evidence gathered by police and said there was no evidence that the sprinter had committed premeditated murder. He said Steenkamp spending the night at Pistorius' home was "consistent with a loving relationship.‖ A prosecution lawyer called Pistorius' account of Steenkamp's death "improbable," saying: "The only reason you'd fire four shots is to kill.― Read more

Female kicker to break NFL gender barrier

When Lauren Silberman shows up at an NFL Regional Scouting Combine for a kicking tryout in New Jersey next month, her leg strength won't be the only facet drawing people's attention. Silberman also will make football history by becoming the first woman to participate in the event. Silberman, 28, resides in New York City and is a University of Wisconsin graduate who played club soccer at the school. She received a master's degree at MIT and wrote her thesis on how video games can enhance a player's performance. She later founded a consulting company that helps athletes train by using video games. Though her background differs from most competitors, Silberman will take advantage of a relatively new NFL rule focused on gender equity. The NFL approved a guideline in 2012 allowing women to play in the league, and Silberman's appearance at the New Jersey Regional Combine on March 2-3 will be the furthest anyone has taken the rule. "I think it's fantastic," Jared Silberman, Lauren's father, told FOXSportsWisconsin.com when reached by phone Wednesday. "She's being humble about the whole thing, about her chances and everything. She's surprised there weren't more women that were doing this as of the announcement last year that they could do it. I wish her all the best. "I think it's wonderful, but I have concerns. I said, 'Lauren, on a kickoff, the guy gets through, you've got to go after him. That's a new dimension here.' But good for her that she's doing it." Lauren Silberman told NFL.com on Tuesday that she wasn't aware she was the first female participant at a Regional Combine. "The opportunity to attend this event could not be more exciting," she told NFL.com. "Getting to meet interesting people and perfect my technique from others could not be more rewarding. ... Regardless of the outcome of the tryout, I hope there is a way I can contribute and strengthen the league." Regional Combines for position players are limited to 240 participants, and the cost is $225. Combines for specialists are $275 and are limited to 40 kickers and 50 punters. Lauren's father said she had no background as a kicker but had made a 40-yard field goal before, which encouraged her to attend the Regional Combine, even if the odds are stacked against her. "Lauren was a very good soccer player," Jared Silberman said. "She always had a big leg. That's where I think a lot of this is coming from."

Gophers wrestler must choose music or sports

February 20, 2013 KEEP ON PLAYING More than one jock has turned from power hits to power ballads. Check out these athletes turned musicians.MINNEAPOLIS — Joel Bauman is a wrestler. He's also an aspiring musician. Now, the NCAA is telling the University of Minnesota student that he can't be both. Bauman received word late last week that if he wants to continue to compete with the Gophers wrestling team, he will have to remove his music from various online websites or change his name on the songs to an alias. The redshirt sophomore said he plans to do neither. "It's probably not going to come down," Bauman said. "I have ways that I'm trying to work to do both. The goal is to work to do both, but I'm not going to take it down. They said I could go by an alias or something. I don't plan on going by an alias, but I do have a plan to make it happen." For the time being, Bauman is barred from competing for the Gophers, but he can still practice with the team. He remains on scholarship but won't be able to hit the mat again until changes are made to his budding music career. "I plan on practicing," said Bauman, who has had multiple concussions during his time at Minnesota. "I'm on the team. That's one of my obligations." The University of Minnesota's compliance office conducted an investigation of Bauman's music and met with the wrestler to inform him that he must either remove the music and his photo or use an alias. "We are certainly sympathetic of Joel," said J.T. Bruett, the school's compliance director. "But based on NCAA legislation in this area, student-athletes are not allowed to use their name, image or status as a collegiate student-athlete to promote the sale of a commercial product, including songs affiliated with a music career."

Amateur boxer dies after collapsing GRAND FORKS, North Dakota (AP) An amateur boxer in the United States who collapsed during a weekend fight has died. The Grand Forks Herald reports that North Dakota boxer Jerimiah ''J.J.'' Moen died Wednesday morning at a hospital. The 29-year-old Moen collapsed after the first round of a scheduled three-round, super-heavyweight Golden Gloves fight Saturday in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Moen's uncle, Mike Sweeney, says the family learned this week that Moen had ''serious trauma'' to his brain from previous injuries, including concussions. Moen had remained unconscious and in critical condition since the fight.

Sweeney says Moen boxed four years during high school and then returned to the ring last year. He was named a Golden Gloves regional champion last year Jerimiah "JJ" Moen and his fiancĂŠe Megan Link

Ex-Marine lies to play on PGA A former Marine lied about having war injuries so he could get free golfing lessons, endorsements, cash, a trip to Iraq and to fulfill his dream of playing golf on the PGA tour, court documents show, Court documents filed in Dallas on Tuesday show that Michael Duye Campbell has agreed to plead guilty to mail fraud. The plea agreement does not recommend a sentence but outlines that Campbell faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and payment of restitution to those he deceived. A judge must still approve the plea deal. Campbell defrauded charities out of at least $40,000 by claiming he was wounded in 2003 while on foot patrol in Fallujah, Iraq, according to court documents. He told people that members of his unit were killed by a bomb blast and that he woke up months later at Walter Reed Army Hospital. He claimed he could not speak, had partially lost his memory and was left with a stutter as a result of his injuries that included broken bones and a traumatic brain injury, an outline of his case filed in court Tuesday says. Campbell, 30, lived in the Dallas area as recently as 2010. Military records show he served in the Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004, but the records do not support his claim that he was a combat veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury. Campbell's public defender, Douglas Morris, declined to comment on the case Prosecutors say Campbell set up a website to promote his cause and that he approached celebrities in the golf world to ask for support. He would persuade them to write stories about him, give him access to expensive golf schools and exclusive courses. He eventually learned about the Troops First Foundation, a charity led by former professional golfer and TV golf commentator David Feherty. Feherty wrote an article for golf.com about meeting Campbell at a golf tournament in 2010. ''When he told me he was a Marine, I was instantly fine with it. He didn't look injured, but I didn't care. Any member of the military can walk with me, anytime, anywhere,'' Feherty wrote. In December 2010, the Troops First Foundation flew Campbell to Dubai, where he took a military transport to Fallujah, as part of a program in which wounded veterans are taken to the site where they were injured, according to court documents. Documents show he also lied to other charities, obtaining money for a car and car insurance, living expenses and golf tournament entry fees. He also received golf gear from sporting goods companies, the documents say. The charities did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment Wednesday.

Rebecca Marino quits tennis over depression, cyberbullying Rebecca Marino, a 22-year-old Canadian tennis player who has been ranked as high as 38th in the world in women’s professional tennis, is calling it quits. Her decision to quit the sport has nothing to do with injury or talent — it’s because of cyberbullying, according to The Toronto Star. “In a way I wish I hadn’t joined social media,” she admitted. Marino deleted both her Facebook and Twitter accounts earlier this week and explained to reporters via conference call that she received tweets that said she should “go die” and to “go burn in hell” and that she had cost bettors lots of money. “It has been a difficult decision and one that I have not taken lightly,” she said in a conference call. “After thinking long and hard about it, I realized that I do not have the passion or enjoyment to drive myself to the level of which I would like to be at in professional tennis. I have previously been to No. 38 on the WTA singles rankings, so I realize the amount of work and sacrifices that have to be put in. And at this point, I do not think it is worth sacrificing my happiness for.” Social media played a role in her decision to take a seven-month hiatus from tennis in 2012. “I have been suffering from depression for many years, and I had gotten to my lowest point last February,” she said of the time her 2012 hiatus began. “I opened up to my friends and family about what was going on. This was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but it is also the best thing I have ever done. Seeking help got me through to a better outlook, and made me enjoy life. To this day I still struggle with my depression, but I am doing far better than before. “I’ve had days where I haven’t been able to get out of bed,” she added. “I’ve had days where I can’t even go to put my clothes on. Scary wreck shakes up Daytona Speedway DAYTONA BEACH, FLA At least 28 people were injured — two critically — during the last lap of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, officials said, when a car slammed into the catch fence and came apart. The incident was the result of a last-lap crash in the battle for the win. Kyle Larson’s car was launched into the fence as drivers crashed around him and Tony Stewart took the checkered flag. The suspension and tires from Larson’s car went into the fence, with one tire appearing to sail over it. The front end was sheared off of Larson’s car, but the driver climbed from it. Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III confirmed that 14 people were transported off property and an additional 14 were treated in the at-track care center. “First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,” Chitwood read from a prepared statement Saturday night. “Following the incident we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols, and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately. ... We're in the process of repairing the facility and will be ready to go racing tomorrow.” Chitwood said that those injured were located in the section just outside of where Larson’s car hit the fence and the crossover gate. Chitwood declined to give an update on injuries. Halifax Health spokesman Byron Cogdell said 12 spectators were treated in the hospital's emergency room, seven from injuries related to the crash - including one with lifethreatening injuries and one child in critical condition - and five non-related issues. All patients were stable. The Associated Press later reported at least 30 were injured, citing local officials. Chitwood said the track would complete a standard review of the facility on Saturday night. “At this point as we responded to the incident, we transported immediately to those patients that needed critical assistance,” he said. “We'll review ourselves in terms of where the debris flew and what we need to do with that.” The crash happened as the race was coming to an end.
