Bruins aiming for first UCLA baseball title ABBEY MASTRACCO Published: Sunday, June 23, 2013, 9:02pm
UCLA has won a total of 108 NCAA Championships, a figure that leads the nation. Not one of them came on the diamond.
The Bruins kick off Game 1 of the College World Series finals against Mississippi State on Monday.(Bruce ThorsonUSA TODAY Sports)
Two years ago, the Bruins were in the same position they are in today. They reached college baseball’s promised land of Omaha, Neb., at the College World Series and
advanced all the way to the finals against SEC power South Carolina. But the Bruins run ended somewhat unceremoniously in a two-game sweep. This year, it’s another SEC powerhouse – Mississippi State. While the story thus far has been written much like it was in 2010, this Bruins team seems intent on rewriting history. They will take that first step Monday afternoon in the first game of the College World Series finals at TD Ameritrade Park at 5 p.m. "You've just got to go with it and believe in your team in the time that you're in it," said head coach John Savage. "But a National Championship is always going to hang over any program that's an elite program that hasn't won one. You could problem mention 25 schools. We just happened to be playing for that one prize. "You have to have at least a shot on goal, and we both do have that opportunity, but both teams have earned that right." UCLA athletics typically bring to mind John Wooden and the record 10 national championships in men’s basketball. Yes, this is a different spot. But Wooden defines UCLA athletics, its tradition and pride in a way that no mascot ever could. The legendary head coach and motivator created a culture that all UCLA teams strive to emulate. Clips-Celtics deal for Rivers awaits league approval MICHAEL MARTINEZ Published: Sunday, June 23, 2013, 1:14pm
Through all the posturing and apparent roadblocks that seemed to doom the deal that would bring Doc Rivers to coach the Clippers, this much was clear: The Clippers wanted Rivers and he wanted them. In the end, their mutual desire for each other rose above all other impediments, which is why the Clippers and the Boston Celtics reached an agreement Sunday that will allow Rivers to coach the Clippers for the next three seasons. According to various reports, Paul strongly supported the Clippers’ pursuit of Rivers and had indicated he was ready to sign a max five-year deal if it happened. The Clippers agreed to send a 2015 first-round draft pick in exchange for the right to hire Rivers. Compensation had been a sticking point in negotiations, with the Clippers refusing to budge on the Celtics’ asking price of a first-round pick in 2014, which is expected to yield a good crop of college players. Kobe turns to Beckham for advice LA Times Published: Saturday, June 22, 2013, 6:13pm
Kobe Bryant says he has spoken with retired international soccer star David Beckham about his recovery from an Achilles injury in 2010. (Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images)
Recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, Kobe Bryant has turned to soccer star David Beckham for advice. "Becks and I have grown to be pretty close since he's been playing in Los Angeles for [the Galaxy] the last five years," said Bryant in a video interview with ESPN.com.br on Friday while vacationing in Brazil. Beckham tore his Achilles in 2010, but was able to make a strong return to the pitch. "He and I talked for quite a bit about his process, and his recovery," Kobe said. "He hasn't had any issues with it since. He's won several championships since the injury, so I'm pretty encouraged by that." Bryant was injured on April 12 in a win over the Golden State Warriors. He had surgery the following day, with a projected recovery of six to nine months.
on Achilles injury? While in Brazil, Bryant met with Hall of Fame Brazilian basketball star Oscar Schmidt, who at 55 years old is battling brain cancer. "Oscar Schmidt was the guy when I grew up [in Italy]," said Bryant. "He was 35-40 points every night. He was just automatic. I remember just watching him play and saying, 'Man, if I can shoot like that, at his height [6-foot-9] and to be able to handle the ball at his size.'“ Bryant also tweeted a picture with Brazilian soccer star Leandro Damião. The Lakers hope to have Bryant at full strength next year but he may not be able to return until November or December. "It's going well," he said of his recovery. "I'm pretty much two months out of surgery, and I'm walking. I can get up on my toes. I'm pleased with how it's going so far.“ Bryant admitted to having some initial doubts about regaining his physical abilities, but now he uses that as fuel for his recovery. "You have to allow yourself to think that, because it keeps you on edge. It keeps you motivated. It keeps you strong," he said. "I think for me, once I started hearing everybody else say, 'Well, maybe this is it. Maybe this is too much' — that's what really gave me the determination to see if I can prove them wrong.“ While he may not play more than another couple of more years, he didn't want an injury to end his career. "You want to be able to go out on your own terms. You don't want to be forced out of the game because of an injury," he said. "You want to feel like when you're leaving the game, you're leaving because you want to." Meanwhile, the Lakers are waiting to see if Dwight Howard re-signs as a free agent in July. "It's a big summer for us. We don't know what direction we're going yet but one thing I know about the Laker organization is that they're very committed to making sure that we have a team that's on the floor that's a competitive team to win a championship," said Bryant. "Which direction that's going to be, whether it's with Dwight or not? I don't know. We'll just have to see." If Howard returns and with the addition of some youth, length and defensive ability on the perimeter, Bryant is confident the Lakers can compete next year. "We need a couple of younger legs, long guys that can defend and can cover the floor on the perimeter," he said. "If we do that, I think we'll be all right."

A suspect in the home burglary of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops was arrested early Saturday morning after discussing the incident at a party, according to the Norman Police Department. Corey McCarty, 21, was detained when Oklahoma City police were breaking up a party, according to ESPN.com. McCarty then waived his Miranda rights and confessed. Another suspect was arrested but a name was not released because the suspect is believed to be a juvenile. McCarty was charged with stolen property, larceny of a motor vehicle and use of a stolen credit card. The home was broken into Wednesday while the family was asleep. No one was hurt, but a vehicle and cash were stolen. Norman police released video footage footage of two people suspected in the break-in. A police source told FOXSportsSouthwest.com Thursday that they believed the intruders are assumed to be people who have been working construction or other jobs around the house. The source said the alarm to the house was not set and the security gate was opened and the suspects came in wearing masks.

'Bama superfan Coffee dies at 91 Published March 16, 2013 | By Jason Whitney Alabama superfan Dick Coffee, who attended 781 consecutive Crimson Tide football games, has died at 91. "He was a great American and a great Alabama fan,” friend Oakley Melton, 85, told The Birmingham News. “There’s never been anyone greater. He would go if it was raining, snowing, sleeting. Dick Coffee would be there, and his record was unblemished." Coffee attended his first game in the 1946 season opener, a 26-7 win over Furman, and all 14 of 'Bama's games last season, including the 42-14 victory over Notre Dame in the BCS championship game. “He was in a wheelchair and couldn’t hear, but he was at all of them,” Ken Gaddy, director of the Paul W. Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa, told The News. However, he doesn't own the Guiness World Record. Gilles Pellerin attended 797 consecutive USC football games starting in 1926 until he died in 1998 in the Rose Bowl parking lot during the Trojans' game against UCLA. “I thought he had the all-time record, and I sent it to the Guinness Book of World Records when he got up to about 700,” Melton said. “They wrote back and said no, he was second.” Melton said he tried to get Coffee in the A-Club, the school's athletic letterwinners organization. “I thought he deserved to be an honorary member,” Melton said, “but they’re very strict on that and don’t permit anybody but that wasn’t a player.” The Crimson Tide open the season Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech in Atlanta.

Broner tweaks Malignaggi after bout Adrien Broner talked plenty of trash ahead of his fight with WBA welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi. Saturday night, Broner backed it up, winning a split decision and then rubbing it in his face. The line of the night? "I'm good. I beat Paulie. I left with his belt and his girl." Wait, what was that last part?
For those who didn't follow the lead-up to the fight, which was spectacular all on its own, here's the gist. At a seriously NSFW press conference in early May, Broner (wearing a Hey Paulette shirt to boot) called a woman named Jessica Corazon, who he said was Malignaggi's ex-girlfriend, and put her on speaker after telling a long, winding story saying Malignaggi had hit her. Malignaggi laughed it off at the time and gave as good as he got in the press conference. And when Broner brought Jessica to the final press conference before the fight, Malignaggi called her out specifically -mocking her after she couldn't give his mother's name. But he wasn't laughing Saturday night after losing on two of the three judges' cards. First, his belt: "I'm not saying it was fixed, but it's always the most connected fighters who get the decisions," Malignaggi complained afterward, insinuating Broner had a helping hand in winning the decision. Second, his girl: "Don't talk about stealing my side piece -- that's my side piece," he screamed at Broner after the postfight boast.

JAYS TIE TEAM MARK WITH 11TH STRAIGHT WIN
TORONTO (AP) These are the Toronto Blue Jays Edwin Encarnacion expected after a busy offseason. Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs, Josh Johnson earned his first win of the season and the Blue Jays matched a team record by winning their 11th straight game Sunday, finishing a three-game sweep of Baltimore with a 13-5 win. The Blue Jays have gone 28-15 since May 2, when they were a season-worst 10-21. They've won 15 of their past 18, outscoring their opponents 102-52 in that span. ''I've been waiting for this since the season started,'' Encarnacion said. ''I believe in this team so I knew things had to change, things had to become good for us. That's the way right now and we enjoy it, enjoy the moment. I'm not surprised by this. I know this team is good and I know we can do it.'' Toronto has swept three consecutive series for the first time since 1998, the last time they won 11 straight. The Blue Jays also won 11 consecutive games in 1987. ''Everybody is doing their job, everybody is pitching in,'' Johnson said. ''It's been impressive.'' Playing before a sellout crowd of 45,214, Toronto became the first team since Detroit in 2011 to win 11 straight. ''We're feeling pretty good about ourselves,'' Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. ''We shut down a really good team over there.'' The Blue Jays, who begin a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Monday, have not lost since a 10-6 defeat at theChicago White Sox on June 10. ''A lot of guys have been in a good rhythm at the same time, which is kind of what we didn't have to start the season,'' catcher J.P. Arencibia said. Ryan Flaherty hit two homers but Baltimore lost for the fifth time in eight games and allowed a season high in runs. ‘

Heat’s take two in a row Notebook: Heat 95, Spurs 88 Zachary Paul for NBA.com Posted Fri Jun 21, 2013 1:17 AM - Updated Fri Jun 21, 2013 1:17 AM THE FACTS: LeBron James had 37 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Miami Heat to a 95-88 victory against the San Antonio Spurs Thursday in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, capturing their second straight championship. James shot 12-for-23 from the field and also had 12 rebounds and four assists. Dwyane Wade added 23 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 24 points and 12 rebounds. James and Wade were too much for San Antonio down the stretch. They scored 10 of the Heat's final 13 points. Their production was sprinkled in with a little Shane Battier, too, who scored 18 points on six 3-pointers. The Spurs' best threat came when they pulled to within 90-88 on a 3-pointer by Kawhi Leonard with two minutes left. They got no closer because of missed opportunities and turnovers. After James hit a jumper with 27 seconds left, he sealed it by stealing the Spurs' inbound pass on the next possession. QUOTABLE: "It became time. [James] always rises to the occasion when it matters the most, when the competition is fiercest. It was odd, all year he had been best perimeter jump shooter in the league though he's an attacker and got to the rim, to the free-throw line." --Heat coach Erik Spoelstra THE STAT: Wade and James combined for 60 points. Upping their game allowed the Heat to make up forChris Bosh going scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting. Bosh did make a strong defensive contribution, though, challenging Spurs shooters all night. TURNING POINT: With an 88-85 lead, Wade hit a jump shot from the wing that gave the Heat just enough breathing room. QUOTABLE II: "The obvious word is disappointing. Tough end to the game. Made some bad decisions., missed some tough shots. I don't know what to say. Just give credit to the Miami Heat." --Spurs center Tim Duncan HOT: James and Wade carried the load. They combined to shoot 23-for-44 from the field. They took turns hurting the Spurs from the perimeter, which was the key to their success. NOT: Another tough night for Danny Green. So much for him being the dark-horse candidate for Finals MVP. Green shot 1-for-12 from the field after being seemingly unstoppable through five games.
