Joke of the Day Smarter than he seems... There was a little boy named Johnny who used to hang out at the local corner market. The owner didn't know what Johnny's problem was, but the boys would constantly tease him. They would always comment that he was two bricks shy of a load, or two pickles short of a barrel. To prove it, sometimes they would offer Johnny his choice between a nickel (5 cents) and a dime (10 cents) and John would always take the nickel -- they said, because it was bigger. One day after John grabbed the nickel, the store owner took him aside and said, "Johnny, those boys are making fun of you. They think you don't know the dime is worth more than the nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it's bigger or what?" Slowly, Johnny turned toward the store owner and a big grin appeared on his face and Johnny said, "Well, if I took the dime, they'd stop doing it, and so far I've saved \\$20!"

Former "Teacher of Year" Sentenced for Sex With Student A former New Jersey teacher of the year won't serve any prison time after admitting she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. A state Superior Court judge in Newark sentenced 33-year-old Erica DePalo to lifetime parole supervision. She also will have to forfeit her teaching certificate and register as a sex offender. A tearful DePalo made a brief statement in court Monday expressing regret for her actions, and saying she is trying to rebuild her life. She pleaded guilty in February to child endangerment. Prosecutors say the Montclair resident had a brief sexual relationship with a student in her honors English class at West Orange High School. She initially was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and child endangerment and could have faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Her attorney, Anthony Alfano, said DePalo suffers from bipolar disorder and was on bad medication that can cause errors in judgment. --Jen Maxfield contributed to this story

The 25 most dangerous By Kim Peterson, MSN Money

Patterns in the violence What comes to mind when you picture America's most violent neighborhood? A high-rise tenement building, a Cabrini-Greenstyle slum rife with drug dealers and thugs? A new study by NeighborhoodScout.com shows that's not the case at all. In 2013, the country's most violent neighborhoods generally contain single-family homes or small apartment units. Many buildings are abandoned. The residents are poor, and often in single-parent households. It was a pattern that came up repeatedly when NeighborhoodScout, a real-estate neighborhood search website, decided to survey the 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America. Using dozens of computer models, the team behind NeighborhoodScout analyzed FBI data from 17,000 local law enforcement agencies to find the specific neighborhoods in America with the highest predicted rates of violent crime. They say all real estate is local, and NeighborhoodScout drilled down deep into cities and towns to find the specific census tract areas -sometimes just a scattering of blocks -- that had the highest rates of homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. The results will surprise you. And they can be important to follow, because your home is an investment -- perhaps the biggest one your family will ever make. A crime surge, even a few miles away across town, could hurt the value of that nest egg you've so carefully tended to

Jason Collins comes out as gay NBA veteran Jason Collins became the first active male player in the four major American professional sports to come out as gay. The 34-year-old center, who has played for six teams in 12 seasons, wrote a first -person account posted on Sports Illustrated's website Monday. Collins finished this past season with the Washington Wizards and is now a free agent. He says he wants to keep playing. ''If I had my way, someone else would have already done this,'' he writes. ''Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand.'' Collins played in a Final Four for Stanford and reached two NBA Finals. His twin brother, Jarron, was also a longtime NBA center. Jason says he came out to his brother last summer. NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement: ''Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.'' Among those offering support on social media was former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, a friend from Stanford. She tweeted: ''Very proud of my friend Jason Collins for having the strength & courage to be the first openly gay player in the NBA.'' Mostly a backup in his career, Collins has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards. He was traded from Boston to Washington in February. Collins was the 18th pick in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft. Several male athletes have previously come out after they retired, including the NBA's John Amaechi, the NFL's Esera Tuaolo and Major League Baseball's Billy Bean. But Collins is the first to do so while planning to continue playing.

9-year-old killed by intruder in California home Published: April 29, 2013 at 7:28 AM California investigators still have no suspect in the killing of a 9-year-old girl in her home Saturday. WTVR reports, Leila Fowler, 9, was found by her brother with several stabbing injuries in their Calaveras County, Calif. home. She died later that day at a hospital according to a Calaveras County Media Release by Sheriff Capt. Jim Macedo. Macedo said the girl's parents had been at a "nearby public event" and that her brother, who was not named, “is not a suspect at this time, but we are continuing to talk to him, which would be normal because he was the last person with the child.” A search of the Fowler's home Saturday provided officials with a "substantial amount of evidence," according to Macedo. In addition, witesses and phone tippers have given authorities three different descriptions of a possible intruder who came into the Fowler's home and took Lelia's life. The Calaveras police have not yet released the descriptions to the public. “We don’t want to lead anybody in the wrong direction,” he said. Police are currently conducting a widespread search for the suspect and will have an "increased and visible presence at the schools and bus stops" until the crime is solved, Macedo said.

9/11 mom angered after Boeing confirms wreckage planes that brought Sally Regenhard, mother of 9/11 firefighter Christian Regenhard, says the city stopped looking for human remains too early — and the discovery of a piece of one of the hijacked airplanes last week proves her point. The discovery of plane wreckage near the “Ground Zero Mosque” a dozen years after 9/11 was like a slap in the face to the grieving families Monday who never got a body to bury. Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son, Christian, is among the more than 1,100 victims whose remains were never found, said it’s proof the city gave up the search too soon. “If the City of New York could overlook a large piece of debris like this, then how many human remains have been overlooked?” Regenhard said Monday. “I’m disgusted. Regenhard, who heads “9/11 Parents and Families of Firefighters and World Trade Center Victims,” said hundreds of body parts have been discovered since the official search for remains was suspended in 2005. “They were more interested in building and business and not inconveniencing anyone,” Regenhard said. “I’m sure we’ll be finding human remains in the future.” The still-grieving mom spoke out after Boeing confirmed the five-foot piece was from one of the airliners that brought down the Twin Towers. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said they don’t know which of the hijacked planes it was from. But Regenhard said their experts suspect most of the body parts found near 43 to 51 Park Pl., which happens to be the site of the controversial proposed mosque, were from the South Tower. That building was hit by United Airlines Flight 175. Initially, police believed the rusty piece of metal was part of the landing gear. It’s actually a trailing edge flap actuation support structure from a Boeing 767, which is part of the underside of the wing and helps regulate plane speed. The garbage-strewn spot where it was discovered Friday continued to be treated like a crime scene, roped off with yellow tape to keep away the curious. “The NYPD continues to work with the office of the chief medical examiner as it prepares to sift soil at the location for human remains,” Browne said in a statement.

found near 'Ground Zero mosque' is from one of down Twin Towers PLANE - Frank Van Brunt, stand behind a part of a landing gear, on April 24, 2013, apparently from one of the commercial airliners destroyed on September 11, 2001. The piece of the plane has been discovered jammed between the rear of 51 Park Place and the rear of the building behind it, 50 Murray Street.

Also, Browne explained the myterious rope that was looped around the metal — and fueled some conspiracy theories that the plane part had been lowered into place. On Monday, Browne said the wing part had actually been lassoed by an officer “in order to move it in such a way as to look for its serial number or other identifiers.” Investigators expect to be done by Wednesday, and then the plane debris will be placed in the custody of the NYPD’s Property Clerk, Browne said. “They should put it in a museum,” said Peter Wright, a 24-year-old financial analyst on his way to his Wall Street job. Mark Kerr, 52, a Verizon worker from Jamaica, Queens, who was working in Lower Manhattan on the day of the attack, said he wasn’t surprised by the discovery of the wreckage. “We got a lot of nooks and crannies,” he said. An 84-year-old woman who gave her name as Lorraine said she has walked past this spot countless times. “I thought it was bizarre that they would find that so many years later,” she said. “Every day I walked past this, it brings back the memory. Every day I see the bodies falling.” More than 2,700 people were killed in New York after Osama Bin Laden’s fanatical followers slammed a pair of hijacked planes into the towers on Sept. 11, 2001. American Airlines Flight 11 hit the north tower. Both flights originated in Boston and were bound for Los Angeles. Meanwhile, foul weather forced workers at One World Trade Center to put off installing the last pieces of a spire that will make the 104-foot skyscraper the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the spire pieces and a steel beacon will be lifted at a later date. Workers began installing the 800-ton, 408-foot spire in December and when completed the building will be a stunning — and patriotic — 1,776 feet from top to bottom.

Three convicted in Kosovo organ trafficking ring that harvested kidneys illegally from poor donors A court in Kosovo found two citizens guilty of human trafficking and organized crime Monday in a major trial against seven people suspected of running an international organ trafficking ring that took kidneys from poor donors lured by financial promises. A panel of two European Union judges and one kosovo judge sentenced urologist Lutfi Dervishi to eight years in prison and his son Arban Dervishi to seven years and three months. Both also received fines, while Lutfi Dervishi was barred from practicing urology for two years. A third defendant, Sokol Hajdini, was sentenced to three years in jail for causing grievous bodily harm. Two others received suspended sentences, while two were freed. The defendants can appeal the verdicts. Organ transplantation is illegal in Kosovo. The trial began in December 2011 and included more than 100 witnesses. All the donors and recipients were foreign nationals. Seven donors who testified were from Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Turkey. They described how they were flown into Kosovo from Istanbul and then quickly wheeled into surgery in a medical facility named “Medicus on the outskirts of Kosovo’s capital, Pristina. The victims were promised $10,000 to $12,000 in return for their kidneys, but many said they were never paid. 12 ways to improve your sex life

Couple whose dog was shot and killed by NYPD officer to sue the city Patricia Ratz (left) and fiancé Pat Guglielmo, along with their dog Bo, near a memorial for Baby Girl in Schmul Park in Staten Island. Baby Girl was shot and killed by an NYPD officer when the dog allegedly charged at them on April 6 A cop killed their Baby Girl — and now they want her to pay. The grieving owner of a 2-year-old pit bull mortally wounded by a cop’s bullet on Staten Island this month is suing the city as well as the cop who opened fire on the beloved pet. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, will be filed in Brooklyn Federal Court on Monday, said the attorney for Baby Girl’s owner, Patricia Ratz. “Nobody’s doing well,” the attorney, Ronald Kuby, said of Ratz and her fiancé, Pat Guglielmo. “It was a horrible thing to endure.” Ratz had taken the doomed dog and two other pit bulls for a walk through Schmul Park on April 6 when the other two dogs — Bo and Missy — started snapping at each other. One of the dogs bit Ratz when she tried to calm them down, she said. A police officer in the Travis park fired upward of 10 shots at the dogs, shooting Baby Girl in the back as the canine ran off, the lawsuit states. Baby Girl died five days later. Police say the cop, who is still on active duty, fired seven times when the dog charged her. Kuby hopes that the suit will spark a change in how the police interact with dogs.“We are seeking to fundamentally change the way the NYPD deals with pets,” he said. “When a dog is fleeing the scene, it’s because the doggie is afraid, not because the dog is concerned about getting arrested. That’s the reason people flee, not doggies.” Police stand by their account of the shooting, which is under investigation.

Ironman 3' screening given to Hurricane Sandy helpers, Queens teens from Police Athletic League By Joe Kemp / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

A Queens teen’s aspirations to become a cop stem from his simple desire to help those in need. Corey Fitchett, 18, is one of several dozen teens with the Police Athletic League being honored by Disney and the Daily News with a special screening of “Iron Man 3” on Monday, four days before the film’s official U.S. release. The movie tickets were given as a tribute to their cleanup efforts after Hurricane Sandy. As excited as Fitchett is to see the action-packed flick, he said being able to lend a hand to his community is just as rewarding. “It’s definitely been a great experience,” he said of the work, which included gutting homes in storm-socked areas and assisting with toy drives for children who lost everything. “It feels good.” He said the volunteer work, along with the communication and job skills he’s learned through various programs at PAL’s Edward Byrne Center in Jamaica, has only helped with his pursuit to be one of the city’s Finest. Fitchett spends 10 hours a week at an internship with the NYPD’s 105th Precinct in Queens Village and works an additional five to 12 hours a week as an auxiliary cop in the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway. But the “Iron Man” fan made sure to take Monday night off so he can be one of the first to see his hero on the silver screen.

Utah man shot twice after pointing gun at people inside Salt Lake City police station lobby WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Police say they shot a man twice in the arm Monday after he pulled out a gun in a suburban Salt Lake City police station lobby and pointed it at an officer and a records clerk. West Valley City Police Sgt. Jason Hauer says 39-year-old James Ramsey Kammeyer entered the lobby around 8:30 a.m. and asked an officer to come out from behind a partition. When several officers came to help, Kammeyer brandished a gun, and one officer fired multiple rounds, hitting Kammeyer twice. Hauer says Kammeyer is expected to be released from the hospital later Monday. Police are preparing to charge him with multiple felonies. Hauer says Kammeyer told officers in December he wanted police to shoot him because he was a registered sex offender and his wife was taking his kids. He pleaded guilty in 1999 to felony child sex abuse.

Student attempts suicide with gun at La Salle High School in Cincinnati A student who shot himself with a gun in front of classmates at his suburban Cincinnati high school Monday morning remained in critical condition, officials said. The family of the unidentified student at La Salle High School released a statement thanking people for their thoughts and prayers while asking for privacy. Several students at the all-male Catholic school called 911 after the 8 a.m. incident. The victim, believed to have been trying to commit suicide in a classroom, was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said. Officials lifted a brief lockdown at La Salle following reports of a shooter on campus.

Martha Stewart agrees to join Match.com: 'I'd like to go to bed with somebody‘ Look out, bachelors: Martha Stewart is on the prowl. The domestic guru, 71, admitted to Matt Lauer that she had almost joined Match.com in her search for the "next Mr. Right." And now Stewart has agreed to actually give the match making website a shot. "Do you think I could possibly, maybe, find a match, like many of my employees?" Stewart asked Match.com chief executive Sam Yagan on "Today" Monday. "What we know we can get you is some great first dates. I think finding a soul mate for you might be a little bit difficult, but I think first dates are easily doable," Yagan replied. Co-host Matt Lauer asked Stewart if she was open to getting married again, but the business whiz said she was looking for something more casual. "It depends. I'd like to have breakfast with somebody," Stewart said. "I'd like to go to bed with somebody. Sleep with somebody.“ But not just anybody will do. Stewart listed the qualities she was looking for in a mate. "Energetic, outdoors-ish, really smart," Stewart described. "Successful is important." Stewart said that she had originally planned to use her real name, rather than an alias, but Yagan discouraged her. "It would be distracting to those initial conversations you have," he said, "Where everyone would be talking to Martha as opposed to really getting to know the person first." "And I might get some crazies," Stewart laughed.

Michael Jackson’s wrongful death trial opens as lawyer slams AEG Live as ‘ruthless’ for hiring Conrad Murray By Nancy Dillon / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Michael Jackson died in 2009 because a "ruthless" group of concert promoters pushed the drug-addicted superstar and ignored his downward spiral, a lawyer for the star’s heirs said Monday. In his opening statement in the Jackson wrongful death trial in Los Angeles, lawyer Brian Panish said the concert company AEG Live was so desperate to stage Jackson’s comeback show that it negligently hired Dr. Conrad Murray, the jailed doctor whose prescriptions caused the King of Pop's overdose death. "There will be no question in your mind they were ruthless," he told jurors. "They wanted to ... be No. 1. They wanted to be No. 1 at all costs." He said AEG's top brass knew Jackson had a history of substance abuse while touring, that he was drunk before a press conference announcing the 2009 comeback concert tour deal and that his doctor was asking for an "exorbitant" $5 million payday that belied the professional risks he was taking. "There were no rules. It didn't matter to them what it took. They were going to get it done," Panish said of the deal to stage the 50-show gig at London's O2 arena. "No matter what problems Michael Jackson had ... there was nothing, nothing going to get in the way.“ AEG, he added, "didn't care who got lost in the wash." The concert company has denied any wrongdoing in the civil lawsuit filed in 2010 by Katherine Jackson and Michael's three children. The company claims Michael Jackson personally hired Murray and that it had no obligation to do a background check or supervise the medicine man’s day-to-day actions. The heirs are asking for jury damages estimated in the billions. Panish admitted to jurors Jackson had a problem with prescription pain killers ever since he suffered serious burns while filming a Pepsi commercial.
