Singer Mindy McCready dead at age 37 HEBER SPRINGS, Arkansas (AP) — Mindy McCready, who hit the top of the country charts before personal problems sidetracked her career, died Sunday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. She was 37. A news release from the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office said McCready was found dead with what appeared to be a single, selfinflicted wound. She was found on the front porch of a home. Waren Olmstead, the county coroner, said McCready died Sunday in Heber Springs but couldn't immediately provide further details. He had no information on who was taking care of her two sons. McCready arrived in Nashville in 1994 with tapes of her karaoke vocals and earned a recording contract with BNA Records. In 1996, her "Guys Do It All the Time" hit No. 1 and its dig at male chauvinism endeared her to females. Her other hits included "Ten Thousand Angels," also in 1996, and her album by that title sold 2 million copies. However, personal problems plagued her beginning in 2004 and included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons. McCready took her older son Zander from her mother and the boy's legal guardian, Gayle Inge, in late 2011. She fled to Arkansas without permission over what she called child abuse fears. Authorities eventually found McCready hiding in a residence without permission and took the boy into custody. She and her boyfriend David Wilson had a son, Zayne, in April of 2012. The older son has a different father. In May 2010, she was hospitalized briefly after police responded to an overdose call at a home in North Fort Myers, Florida, owned by her mother. This followed a stint on "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew," where she declared herself clean from drugs. In 2004, she was charged with obtaining the painkiller OxyContin fraudulently at a pharmacy. She pleaded guilty and was placed on three years' probation. She violated the probation with a drunken driving arrest in May 2005. Then she attempted suicide in July 2005, overdosed in September 2005 and slit her wrists again in December 2008. Also that year, McCready was charged in Arizona with hindering prosecution and unlawful use of transportation. Those charges stemmed from an alleged attempt in June 2005 to purchase two high performance boats, but she claimed she was trying to stop a con man. Growing up in Fort Myers, she took seven years of private vocal lessons and later sang in karaoke bars. Photos: Mindy McCready's life and career After getting her recording contract, she did concert appearances with top country stars including George Strait, Tim McGraw and Alan Jackson. Her other singles included "Maybe He'll Notice Her Now," ''A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)" and "You'll Never Know."

Another meteor? 'Fireballs' light up Florida sky By Juan Ortega and Gilma Avalos, NBCMiami.com

South Floridians who happened to be looking in the right place at the right time Sunday night saw one spectacular light show – possibly a sporadic meteor. The Coast Guard began getting flooded with phone calls about 7:30 p.m., with reports of folks seeing flare-like objects from Jacksonville to Key West, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Laberdesque. People called in, describing the flares ―as orange or red fireballs in the sky,‖ Laberdesque said. The display was limited to the sky: No injuries were reported, Laberdesque said. A sporadic meteor is basically a rocky object that comes from the asteroid belt, said Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, based in Genesee, N.Y. The group logged 27 reports within about the first two hours of the event, he said. "This is a lot of reports to come in quickly," Hankey said. Gauging by the reports, it happened somewhere over the ocean. "These fireballs are common," Hankey said. "It’s rare for any one person to see one more than once or twice in their lifetime. But on any given night, it might happen somewhere in the globe a few times in a day." Hankey added: "People should not be scared of the sky falling or anything at all.―

Burger King sold to McDonald's? No, but hacked Twitter account says so As if it isn't embarrassing enough for a company to have its official Twitter account compromised, sometimes hackers like to add insult to injury. On Monday, a post on the official (and verified) Twitter account for Burger King declared that the fast-food chain "just got sold to McDonalds!" The Twitter account was renamed "McDonalds" and the profile image was changed to the iconic golden arches. The account description? "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped ..." After the "announcement," a stream of tweets and retweets followed, making light of the situation. Based on retweets between @YourAnonNews, a Twitter account associated with Anonymous, and the compromised @BurgerKing account, it appears as if the hacktivist group is behind the hack. Twitter suspended the account about an hour after the first compromised tweet. We reached out to Twitter and Burger King for an explanation as to what efforts are being made to reinstate Burger King's control of the Twitter account. A Twitter spokesperson responded with a standard explanation that the social network doesn't "comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons.“ "This incident has nothing to do with us," a McDonald's spokesperson told NBC News, dismissing the question of an acquisition (and making plain that it wasn't to blame for the social media mess, either). "We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking," a tweet laterposted through the official McDonald's Twitter account further emphasized. Twitter No matter. The Internet's getting a kick out of the whole incident. "The fact that @BurgerKing got hacked and turned into a @McDonalds feed is pretty funny," one Twitter user wrote.

Three men in New York save unconscious stranger from train tracks By NBCNewYork.com

Three men wasted no time jumping onto the subway tracks to save a man who fell off the platform in the early morning hours Sunday, barely missing the next train rolling into the station. "I looked over and saw him down there, and everyone started to scream," the Air Force cadet from Dallas, Texas, told NBC 4 New York Monday. "After that, it was almost like a blur, it happened so quickly.“

Seeing O'Hanlon struggle with the unconscious and bleeding man, 23-year-old Dennis Codrington jumped in, along with his friend from Poughkeepsie, 23-year-old Matt Foley. The three worked quickly as the train approached. "He had to be 220 to 240, he was a very heavy man," said O'Hanlon. "I couldn't lift him by myself." Codrington, a personal trainer at Equinox who lives in Washington Heights, told NBC 4 New York, "It was really surreal. I can't tell you what I was thinking when I was down there. The last thing that went through my head was just get the guy off the tracks." The three men were still struggling to lift the man on the tracks onto the platform when other straphangers pitched in. "The people on the platform were pulling him up, pulling us up," said O'Hanlon. "It was like collaboration of teamwork." The three heroes got up just in time. First responders rushed the unconscious man to a hospital. His condition was unclear. Codrington soon boarded a train to go back to work, and O'Hanlon had a flight to catch back to the Air Force Academy in Colorado. "To witness something like that, witness someone almost being killed, it just puts a lot of things in perspective for me," said Codrington.

Can Obama manage elimination of one-cent coin? By Ali Weinberg, NBC News President Barack Obama finally broke his silence on an issue of national importance Friday – he thinks it’s time to retire the penny. The possible extinction of the one-cent coin was a featured economic question in a Google+ Hangout with the Commander in Chief last week as John Green, the co-creator of a popular YouTube channel, applied a little presidential peer pressure. “Australia, Canada, New Zealand, many other countries have gotten rid of their pennies,” Green said. “Why haven’t we done it?” “I gotta tell you, John, I don’t know,” Obama responded, adding, “Anytime we’re spending money on something people don’t actually use, that’s an example of things we should probably change.” But why should anyone care? They’re pennies. Aren’t there more valuable things to worry about? First, pennies actually cost more to make than they’re worth. In 2012, every penny cost 2.41 cents to make – more than twice their face value. And as zinc and copper – materials used in minting the penny – have become costlier due, in part, to manufacturing shifts in China, which are likely to raise costs further. Granted, the total cost of minting pennies was only $58 million last year – less than onetenth of a percent of total federal spending in 2012 – but groups like Citizens to Retire the U.S. Penny have long been making the economic case for getting rid of the penny (plus, the group adds, fishing for pennies adds about 2 seconds to each cash transaction per day). And the U.S. military has already decided they’re essentially useless; all Army and Air Force Exchange Service stores on bases round all cash purchases up or down to the nearest nickel. With both parties looking for ways to cut government spending, it seems as though cutting penny production could be a relatively painless, if insignificant, place to start. But in the Google+ Hangout, Obama ceded that Washington has bigger fiscal fish to fry. “The penny is an example of something that I need legislation for,” he said. “And, frankly, given all of the big issues that we have to deal with day-in/day-out, a lot of times it just doesn't -- you know, we're not able to get to it.” Read More

Khloe Kardashian fired as host of 'The X Factor'

Things that turn off a guy Story by Charles Laloma

Not a good start to the week for Khloe Kardashian. A report from the New York Post says Khloe will not be back for the next season of the singing competition "The X Factor," on Fox. Khloe joined Mario Lopez as co-host for the show's second season. Lopez has been asked back. "The X Factor" was Kardashian's first hosting gig, and she often times appeared unprepared. Hosting expert Marki Costello says, "It was really hard for me to watch Mario with her. It made me, as a viewer, almost uncomfortable." Britney Spears, a judge on the show, announced her departure in January. She's expected to end up with a Las Vegas residency. Another judge, LA. Reid, also left the show to focus on his job at Epic Records. Now, Fox and show creator/judge Simon Cowell are quickly trying to rebuild the show. One idea might bring a judge let go early in the season one audition process, British singer Cheryl Cole, back into the fold. A spokesperson for the show confirms that no talent decisions have been made for this year's competition.

Sony reveals PlayStation 4, fires first shot in the next console war

After months of rumor and speculation, Sony has revealed its new game machine — the PlayStation 4 — as well as a new controller with a touchpad a "share" button and light bar. "Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation as a company," said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, as he took the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Wednesday. "Today we will give you a glimpse into the future of play.“House told a room packed full of journalists that the new machine — the successor to the PlayStation 3 — would take the moniker PlayStation 4. Sony then revealed the new touch-sensing DualShock controller as well as a new "stereo camera" that works in conjunction with the controller (see video below.) Sony said the PlayStation 4 will launch "holiday 2013" but did not reveal a specific date or a price. Sony also did not show off what its new gaming hardware will look like, revealing only the controller and pictures of the new camera. Mark Cerny, the PS4's lead system architect, did outline some of the innards that will be powering the machine explaining, “The architecture we chose is like a PC in many ways.” He said the PlayStation 4 will feature an X86 CPU and a whopping 8 gigabytes of unified system memory. (For more on that, check out our story here.) David Perry — CEO and founder of Gaikai — also took the stage Wednesday. Sony bought his game streaming company last year. He explained that integration of the streaming service with the PlayStation Store will allow gamers to instantly try games before they buy them

BlackBerry 10 May Have Been An Enormous, RecordBreaking Flop BlackBerry 10 was expected to be the mobile OS that would save its maker. Investors believed this assumption, pouring millions into the firm over the last few months. Even now, with shares declining on a weekly basis, BlackBerry is still up more than 22 percent year-to-date. Traders were not the only ones who wanted a piece of BB10. Developers are alsothought to be excited for the new platform. “They’re happy to have another platform to develop for,” Jan Dawson, Ovum’s Chief Telecoms Analyst, told Benzinga. “It’s a good installed base that they should be able to sell into, so there will be some demand for the apps. That will be something that developers will be excited about.” That excitement may have come to a screeching halt now that the sales figures are beginning to materialize. While BlackBerry has not released the official numbers, analysts have been investigating the situation with their own channel checks. The results have not been what people expected. “Given our store surveys indicated modest Z10 sales into the channel in the U.K. and Canada, we have reduced our February quarter BB10 smartphone shipment estimates from 1.75M units to 300K units,” Canaccord Genuity wrote in a report. Further, we believe carrier support for BlackBerry 10 in the U.S. is modest, as demonstrated by Sprint only planning to launch the Q10 and T-Mobile only the Z10. Further, we anticipate carriers will not build large inventory levels for BB10, consistent with prior BB7 high-end launches, and will initially stock modest levels given the weaker consumer demand for highend BlackBerry smartphones.” Canaccord Genuity went on to say that it expects BB10 to face “increasing competition from a host of new Android and Windows smartphones and potentially a new iPhone” in the first half of the year. As a result, “We anticipate global carrier partners will order cautious initial BB10 inventory levels, leading us to lower our February quarter and Fiscal 2014 BB10 estimates.” BlackBerry tech site N4BB responded to Canaccord Genuity’s report with some additional sales

'Birth of the Dragon' purports to tell the martial arts legend's 'origin story‘ By Corwin Neuse Tue 10:21 PM This is a weird one. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the legendary Bruce Lee is getting the biopic treatment, sort of, in "Birth of the Dragon." The film will reportedly trace Lee's "origin story," recounting the true-to-life story how he and Chinese kung-fu master Wong Jack Man "dueled" in San Francisco in 1965. As the story goes, the two subsequently teamed up to take down the triad gangs that controlled Chinatown at that time. Which sounds more like "Big Trouble in Little China" than an honest biopic to us, but, hey, who's counting? The script for "Dragon" will be written by Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele, who can be said to specialize in biopic fare. They previously collaborated on the Oscar-grubbing flicks "Nixon" and "Ali," and also wrote "Mercury," the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Which certainly gives "Birth of a Dragon" a not-inconsiderable air of creative legitimacy. Still, that two sentence synopsis leaves something to be desired... What do you think, Hitlisters? Bruce Lee certainly seems deserving of silver-screen immortalization, but is this the right vehicle to achieve all that? Does anybody else even remember "Big Trouble in Little China?" Detroit named most miserable US city in Forbes ranking

The ranking of the nation's most unhappy urban areas comes as the Motor City is facing the possibility of bankruptcy and financial takeover by the state of Michigan. With its violent crimes, high unemployment, dwindling population and financial crisis, Detroit was named on Thursday as the most miserable city in the United States. It toppled Miami, which held the title last year, and surpassed Flint, Michigan, Rockford and Chicago in Illinois and Modesto, California, which rounded out the five most unhappy urban areas....

Dunkin' takes shot at modifying Obamacare The question of who counts as a full-time worker is coming under fire from Dunkin' Brands (DNKN -2.30%), which wants the government to narrow its definition under Obamacare. That's because it wants to avoid paying health insurance for Dunkin' Donuts employees who work as little as 30 hours a week. Dunkin' Brands is lobbying the government to change the U.S. Affordable Care Act's definition of "full-time" to employees working at least 40 hours a week, instead of the 30 hours currently written into the law, Chief Executive Nigel Travis told the Financial Times. The latest volley from an iconic U.S. business comes as the ACA is set to go into effect next year. The law will require employers with 50 or more full-time employees (30 hours or more) to offer those workers "minimum essential" healthcare insurance. Dunkin' Brands, which also owns Baskin-Robbins, operates on a franchise model. The parent company, excluding workers at its company-owned restaurants, employed more than 1,120 people at the end of 2011, according to its annual report. But the real benefit would likely go to Dunkin's franchisees, who operate more than 10,000 Dunkin' Donuts locations and almost 7,000 Baskin-Robbins restaurants. Other big businesses are lashing out at the costs of the plan. Supermarket chain Kroger (KR 1.91%) told the FT that some companies might decide to pay the government-mandated penalty for failing to insure employees simply because it's cheaper than buying insurance. Small-business owners are also reacting. As previously reported by MSN moneyNOW, one Wendy's franchise in Nebraska is cutting back the hours of non-management employees to avoid paying health benefits. The local franchise vice president said his company couldn't afford to pay for health insurance and instead is cutting hours of about 100 Wendy's workers. Other businesses are keeping their employee count under 50, the FT notes. The average cost to employers of providing insurance for a single worker is $4,664 and $11,329 for a family, the FT notes, citing the Kaiser Family Foundation. The penalty for not insuring employees under Obamacare, meanwhile, is $2,000 per worker. "If you look through the economics of the penalty the companies pay versus the cost to provide coverage, the penalty's too low, or the cost of coverage is too high, or the combination is wrong," Kroger Chief Executive David Dillon told the newspaper.

Chatty Cathy, listen up: New study reveals why women talk more than men By Eun Kyung Kim, TODAY contributor

Women have a gift for gab, and now they can silence their critics with science. New research indicates there’s a biological reason why women talk so much more than men: 20,000 words a day spoken by the average woman, according to one study, versus about 7,000 words a day for the average man. Women’s brains have higher levels of a “language protein” called FOXP2, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “The major finding that we discovered was that this protein FOXP2 is involved in vocalization,” Mike Bowers, who led the study’s team of researchers, told TODAY. “We can’t say that this is the end-all-be-all reasoning. but it is one of the first avenues with which we can start to explore why women tend to be more verbal than men.” In the study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers examined a group of young 4- and 5-year olds and discovered 30 percent more of the language protein in the brains of the girls. That doesn’t mean women are always the chattier gender. TODAY’s David Gregory admitted Thursday that he’s a talker, recounting a story from college when someone told him, “you’re talking a hole in my head.” During a surprise call on air, his wife confirmed that Gregory is the chattier of the two. “I think I have an indentation myself,” she said. Gregory, who lives in Washington, D.C., has been in New York this week filling in for TODAY host Matt Lauer. His wife, Beth Wilkinson, said she's been enjoying the silence. “Thanks for keeping our house quiet this week,” she told the TODAY crew.

'80s Music Greats: Where are they now? Along with hairspray, ripped jeans, and androgynous looks, music ruled the '80s. We know you still have songs like 'Come on Eileen' and 'Cars' stuck in your head. These hits included new wave classics, funky dance jams, and even a few power ballads ('I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight' anyone?). So, whip out your mullets for this walk down '80s memory lane. Music greats of the 1980's: Where are they now? --BY ROSANNE SALVATORE Toni Basil 'Mickey' In 1982, Toni Basil wanted the world to know just how fine she thought Mickey was. Her song became a multi-million selling hit across the world. Basil paid tribute to cheerleading dance routines everywhere - and she actually donned her very own uniform from Las Vegas High School. The success of her iconic song and cheerleader outfit were never matched again by Basil. She released a second self-titled album in 1983 but never again topped the charts with her singles. Before and after her hit song, she appeared in small roles on TV and movie screens. She continues her work in choreography, working in recent years with Tina Turner and Bette Midler. Fine Young Cannibals 'She Drives Me Crazy' Roland Gift has been driving listeners crazy (in a good way) since 1988. His voice accompanied the music of David Steele and Andy Cox, previously of The Beat, to produce this '80s classic. Even though two singles reached No. 1 on the US charts from their 1988 album 'The Raw and the Cooked,' the band was dissolved by 1992. Frontman Roland Gift moved into acting, playing Xavier St. Cloud on the series 'Highlander' from 1993 - 1997. In 1996, the group got back together to record just one more single, 'The Flame,' but that's where, so far, their story together ends

Story by Charles Laloma As a person that grown up in the 80’s I can related to this subject. The 80’s was about family, friends and entering the new age of what to come. The 80’s was not about what you don’t have, but more about what you can do with what you do have. It was the time of Saturday Cartoons, double feature movie theaters, Block parties, Girls playing Double Dutch, boys playing stick balls & The new dance called Break Dancing, and the music type called Freestyle, Soft rock, Pop & Hip-hop was all You needed. It was a Time where it was just a few channels on TV and everything shut down when the flag comes out on the screen follow by static. Channels list was 2,4,7,9,11 & 13 and for the Latinos it was 41 & 47. You had to use a antenna to get good signal. Sometime using a metal hanger sometime helps. (LOL). A time where there was a Penny Candy Store and a after school diner or pizza shop that everyone stop to speak before going home. Even if you seen each other in school and will see each other later. Where our Mona Lisa’s was graffiti. We was the last of a dying breed and the first to see the future. Yes the 80’s had it good time but it also had it bad times. The new drug ―Crack‖ came out. Welfare raised to a top 4 out of 5 household. New gangs developing or as they use to be called ―Posse‖. With all the bad things going on in the 80’s the one thing that you can take from that time was that no matter how hard it is you can overcome it. I remember the free lunches, Cheese, after school programs and going to school early to eat breakfast. Also in the summer there was no need for swimming pools when we had the fire hydrant. A simple time was the 80’s so simple that now in the 2000’s many suicide and depression is because the missing of the 80’s. 8 out of 10 people whom was raised in the 80’s surfer from some part of depression. The number is depressing in itself to see but it tell that the 80’s was a place to be. If this reporter can go back in time and change something I will change that the 80’s would have been a little longer.

WHY DO WE GRIEVE FOR A LOST ONE Story BY Charles Laloma To grieve is a human emotion or is it. There has been people out there whom have no emotion. Scientist called them Sociopath or Antisocial personality. Well there are some that learn how to control them and sometime fall in the column of Antisocial personality. Which sometime they have called me that in my time. Well to grieve is part of emotion but why. If someone believe that a person has gone to a better place then why grieve, and not celebrate. As a child you are taught a certain religion, but no matter what religion it is they all believe that there is a better place that will bring happiness. Well if that is true then if you grieve for someone wouldn’t that take away from your belief. I interview and watch many people and notice that they grieve cause they will miss them and some because they did not tell them they love them. Many of them always have something nice to say. Maybe because they want to remember the good things. Grieving can clean your soul as they say, but then there are those who grieve for other reason then missing or loving someone. They Grieve for themselves in either wanting the intention or just want to feel. Since humans love fear, be scared and fell sadness. Then Grieving is one of the best things.

People looking for Attention 1. A person that yell and screams 2. A person the cut you off and Start a sentence with ―I‖ 3. A person that always want to give speeches like then be around a long time.

POEM: You might agree or not but one thing that Is true we grieve in many way but the one Thing we forget is something that my mom GLORY IN THE FLOWER Said ―Don’t worry about what you lost or do What though the radiance that was Not have. Worry about what was left behind once so bright be now forever taken and what you do have‖ So I try to live my life with that in mind.

from thy sight, Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower; we will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind.”

Rihanna and Chris Brown: Coming to 'Law & Order: SVU'?

Want to know the celebrity gossip click here

Rihanna and Kate Moss go topless

For the new issue of V Magazine, star photographer Mario Testino produced a spread with singer Rihanna and top model Kate Moss. Lightly dressed, the two superstars pose in intimate positions for the lens of Testino.

Is the Rihanna-Chris Brown saga coming to NBC's long-running crime drama "Order: SVU"? And if so, what took so long? A promo for next week's "Law & Order: SVU," airing Feb. 27 seems an awful lot like Rihanna and Chris Brown's relationship, which initially ended in February 2009 when Brown brutally beat Rihanna, but seems to have been rekindled in recent months, according to various media reports. "A promising singer is brutally attacked by her boyfriend, a popular hip hop star," a description for the episode, dubbed "Funny Valentine," reads. "ADA Barba (guest star Raul Esparza) works to build a case, but the victim refuses to aid the prosecution and, despite Detective Benson's (Mariska Hargitay) best efforts, continues to put herself in danger.“ "Law & Order: SVU" has courted criticism over the topic of abuse against women recently. Earlier this year, an online petition was circulated after it was announced that Mike Tyson, who had earlier been convicted of rape, would guest-star on the series. "Am I the only one who remembers that Mike Tyson was CONVICTED and sent to prison for raping Desiree Washington?" the petition, posted by Marcie Kaveney, reads. "I am sorry but I see this as just another way to clean-up his image."

5 fast fixes for your credit score By Michele Lerner, HSH.com If you're looking for a quick bump higher, these strategies may be useful in nudging that all-important number higher. Mortgage borrowers today understand the need for a high credit score. You won't have access to the best mortgage rates unless your credit score is 740 or higher. If you're in the market for home loan and simply need to give your score a little boost before submitting your application, experts say there are several things mortgage borrowers can do to push their scores up. Here are five methods to raise your credit score quickly:

No. 1: Pay down credit card balances "People with the highest FICO scores carry balances on their credit cards that are less than 20% of their total available credit," says Anthony A. Sprague, the director of public relations for MyFICO.com in San Francisco. "Your balances account for 30% of your credit score."

No. 2: Fix credit report errors McNamara says that while every individual is different, he has seen credit scores rise by as much as 100 points after a credit report error has been removed.

No. 3: Eliminate disputed accounts Kevin Quaid, branch manager with FitzGerald Financial Group, a division of Monarch Bank in Alexandria, Va., says disputed items on your credit report should be removed, particularly if you are applying for a conventional loan guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.

No. 4: Use an old credit card or apply for a new one While you may assume your credit score is high because you don't use credit cards, your score will actually improve if you can prove you use credit wisely. Unused old accounts won't have a positive impact on your score unless you use them occasionally

No. 5: Don't close any accounts Arzaga says opening new, unnecessary credit cards and closing unused credit card accounts are equally likely to negatively impact your score.
