University President - Dr. James Simmons Dr. James M. Simmons, Lamar University’s president, has led Lamar into a new era of dynamic growth. Momentum has been the watchword of Simm o n s ’ administration, a period in which enrollment recorded its largest increase in Lamar’s almost 90-year history, with more than 14,675 students in fall 2012. Even in the wake of two major storms – Hurricane Ike in 2008 and Hurricane Rita in 2005 – Simmons and his team kept classes and graduation on schedule, restoring the campus after substantial damage as well as adding state-of-the-art facilities. In spring 2008, the university launched its first comprehensive campaign, “Investing in the Future,” with the ambitious goal of $100 million. Nearing that mark in January 2012, the goal was increased to $125 million. Impact of the campaign is far reaching – to include endowments for four named academic departments, gifts to support revival of the Cardinals’ football tradition, establishment of a major student fellowship program and substantial growth in scholarship funds. Simmons also implemented a master plan to enhance the campus through landscaping and buildings, most notably the Cardinal Village residence halls, which now

accommodate more than 2,500 students. The Dining Hall, which opened in spring of 2006, and the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center, dedicated in spring of 2007, further contribute to campus life. Renovations and expansions of several major academic buildings have been completed, are under way or are in planning phases. Lamar has also seen major enhancements to its athletic facilities, with the crown jewels including Provost Umphrey Stadium and the Dauphin Athletic Complex. VincentBeck Stadium and McDonald Gym have enjoyed major upgrades, and the LU Soccer and Softball Complex opened in 2009. The university’s designation as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is a powerful affirmation of Lamar’s high level of research activities. Recognizing that online programs are vital to the university’s future, Simmons has continually sought growth in that area. Today, more than 30 percent of LU’s credit hours are now generated through online courses; nearly 4,200 of the university’s students learn entirely online, and LU is a recognized leader in online education. Simmons took office as president on Sept. 1, 1999, bringing a wealth of perspective to the position. A Lamar veteran of more than four decades, he previously served as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication and as interim executive director of university advancement. He began his Lamar career in 1970 as an instructor and director of the marching band. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as director of bands and as chair of the music department. Simmons is also a leader in community service, having garnered dozens of awards and accolades. He has attracted acclaim as an orchestra leader and as a performer on clarinet, saxophone and piano. Because of his leadership role, those pursuits have taken a back seat, but he often says music is his first love, and he continues to grace the stage. Simmons is known as an administrator with a strong sense of direction and a keen ability to attract and cultivate talented faculty – who, he stresses, are professionals who teach rather than professional teachers. His innovative approaches to the pursuit of academic excellence and his winning rapport with students, faculty, staff and the community are defining qualities. In April 2009, Simmons received the

Chief Executive Leadership Award from District 4 of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), which includes Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mexico. In 2011, he was named Newsmaker of the Decade by the Press Club of Southeast Texas. Another honor came his way in 2012 when Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity inducted him into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

Director of Athletics - Jason Henderson J a s o n Henderson, who spent a year as interim athletics director, was named Lamar’s Director of Athletics on June 18, 2012. Henderson has served as Lamar's associate athletic director for compliance since July of 2007 before being elevated to interim athletics director on May 11, 2011. As the athletics director, Henderson is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Lamar’s 17 men’s and women’s athletics programs. Henderson is in his seventh year as a member of the Lamar athletic department overall, joining the staff in April 2006 as the compliance coordinator. In this role, Henderson oversees NCAA compliance and scholarships. Henderson currently serves as the Southland Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet. The cabinet reviews issues relating to NCAA rules involving student-athlete amateurism and ways to ensure that student-athletes remain true to the NCAA philosophy of amateur athletic competitions. While serving as associate AD, Henderson played a major role in the return of Lamar football and the addition of the Lamar women’s soccer and softball programs. He was a key figure in the planning of the Dauphin Athletic Complex, the updating of what is now known as Provost Umphrey Stadium and the construction of the Lamar Soccer/Softball Complex. Henderson has also led coaching

search committees that landed Lamar a successful football coach in Ray Woodard and proven basketball coach Pat Knight. In addition, the athletic department has added several staff positions under his watch. Prior to coming to Lamar, Henderson served as the academic coordinator and CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator at Texas A&MKingsville, where he collected and maintained data on student-athletes, assisted with updating and maintaining compliance documents and assisted with rules education for department staff and student-athletes. Henderson was also an intern at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky., and Texas A&M. During this time Henderson was involved primarily in assisting in the marketing of the NAIA and NCAA programs, respectively. Henderson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with a specialization in sports management from Texas A&M in May of 2003 and a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&MKingsville in December of 2005.

Henderson also spends time in the community with various charitable organizations including the YMBL and the Beaumont A&M Club. Both of these organizations help raise funds to improve the community at large.

Head Coach Brian White 14th Season at Lamar Lamar golf coach Brian White has guided the program to impressive heights, and the 2011-12 season was no different. For the 11th time in the last 12 years, the Lamar men’s golf team earned a spot to NCAA Regionals. Competing at the Greensboro Regional, the Cardinals finished fourth as a team to qualify for the 2012 NCAA Championship. White took his talented team to Riviera Country Club for Lamar’s fifth ever trip to the national tournament and guided the team to a 25th place finish among college golf ’s elite. Prior to heading to the Greensboro Regional, White led the men’s team to its 18th Southland Conference crown and eighth in the last 12 seasons en route to picking up his third Southland Conference Coach of the Year honor. White’s Cardinals earned plenty of accolades in 2012 as senior M.J. Daffue was named to the PING All-Central Region Team and the All-Southland Conference FirstTeam. Senior Xavier Feyaerts and freshman Luke Jerling were each named to the allconference second-team and senior Kevin Hesbois was a third-team selection. Jerling also earned league Freshman of the Year honors. White’s Lady Cardinals took third at the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament with junior Julie Aime earning a spot on the All-Southland Conference Second-Team. While these accomplishments are impressive, White has proven during his time at Lamar that the golf program is capable of even more. Simply put, no athletics program at Lamar University has enjoyed more success than the golf team has. White guided the Cardinals to a third place tie at the 2007 NCAA Championships,

the highest finish in school history. One season earlier, Lamar's men tied for ninth place at the national tournament with former star Dawie Van Der Walt placing fourth as an individual. Now entering his 14th year at Lamar, White has helped the men earn 32 team tournament victories, while his women's teams have picked up 25 wins. Included in the wins for the men's team are eight of the last 12 Southland Conference titles (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012). White has also guided the Lady Cardinals to conference titles in 2003, 2005 and 2006. White has been recognized by his fellow Southland coaches four times, earning men's Coach of the Year honors in 2007, 2008 and 2012, and getting the nod on the women's side in 2005. White has coached 46 men's players to all-conference honors, while 25 women have earned the honor under his guidance. Four Cardinals have earned PING All-America honors during White's tenure, with the group earning the recognition seven times combined. Between the two programs, White has coached nine SLC Players of the Year, three Newcomers of the Year and nine Freshmen of the Year. White has also coached four females and one male to Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honors. Current PGA Tour player Chris Stroud, a first-team PING All-America in 2004, continues to be coached by White, as do professional players Van Der Walt, Casey Clendenon and Oliver Bekker. Stroud tied for third at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., the highest individual finish at the national tournament in LU history. Bekker made his PGA Tour debut in 2012 by winning on the Sunshine Tour and earning a spot in the prestigious Bridgestone Invitational. Van Der Walt fired a 60 in Web.Com Tour competition during the 2012 season and former LU golfer Shawn Stefani (2001-05) won the 2012 Midwest Classic on the Web.Com Tour. Stroud (2001-04) is the only four-time all-conference performer in SLC history on the men's side, while Lady Cardinal standout Therese Nilsson (2006-09), who was twice named SLC Player of the Year, is the only four-time all-conference performer in league history on the women's side. A native of Beaumont, White was a standout at Kelly High School and played professionally from 1991-96 after finishing his golfing career at Lamar. White, who also serves as the Director of Golf at the Beaumont Country Club, earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Lamar in 1989.

Assistant Coach Russell Helson 2nd Season as Assistant Coach Russell Helson begins his first season as an assistant men's and women's golf coach at his alma mater. Helson, who played at Lamar from 2003-08, will begin his first season as a collegiate coach after spending the previous three years as a professional caddy. "I'm thrilled to have a former Lamar player come back to help the program," said head coach Brian White. "Russell brings so much experience on the professional level and that will help him be a great teacher and coach on the college level." During Helson's playing career at Lamar, the Cardinals won three straight Southland Conference titles and advanced to a NCAA Regional each of his four years. A native of Georgetown, Texas, Helson earned Third-Team All-Southland Conference honors as a senior after tying for fourth at the Southland Tournament. Helson also represented Lamar at the 2008 NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio. "I've always wanted to coach college golf," said

Helson. "I'm very excited to coach for not only my alma mater, but also for my former coach." Helson, who caddied for two years on the Nationwide Tour and for one on the PGA Tour, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communication from Lamar in 2008.

Lamar Cardinals’ Golf History The Lamar University men's golf program started when the university achieved senior college status for the 1951-52 season. Over the past five decades, the Cardinals have won seven National Championships, 34 conference titles and sent several players to the PGA Tour. Dr. Lewis Hilley, who would also serve as Lamar's athletic director from 1955-62, was the first men's golf coach at Lamar. He guided the Cardinals to 10 Lone Star Conference Championships from 1953-63. The Cardinals really burst onto the national scene in 1956 by winning the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship. That started a string of five NAIA titles in six years from 1956 to 1961. Fred "Butch" Baird was the first Lamar golfer to make a name for himself on the PGA Tour. He was part of four Lone Star championship teams and won individual medalist honors in 1955. He was a successful member of the PGA Tour for a number of years and the Senior PGA Tour. A change to the Southland Conference for the 1964 season didn't alter the success of the program as the Cardinals proceeded to win 10 straight conference titles from 1964-73. That makes a run of 20 straight conference titles dating back to the Lone Star Conference days. The Cardinals domination came to fruition in the late 1960s led by the threesome of Johnny Barlow, Mike Garrison and Mike Nugent. Barlow captured SLC medalist honors in 1965 and Nugent was the 1967 medalist. Garrison was a two-time medalist in 1966 and 1968. Lamar tied for third at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va. Lamar golf reached its pinnacle in 1967 by winning the NCAA College Division National Championship. Coach Dan Rogas led the Cardinals to a repeat performance in ishing among the Top 125 on the money list every year since 2009. 1968, producing back-to-back NCAA College Division National Championships. Bekker was named honorable mention All-America by Golfweek, and Bekker, Clenin and continued the Cardinals success with a pair of SLC titles. Lamar Lady Cardinals’ Golf History Lamar women's golf is rich in tradition and prestige due to several prominent players in the professional golfing ranks. The first star, Clifford Ann Creed, pioneered women's golf at Lamar and went on to receive her LPGA card in 1962. On January, 26, 1991, Creed was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor. She was made a member of the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame two years prior and is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Creed won 11 professional events and was fourth on the LPGA money list in 1962. She was the Western Open Champion, a six-time winner of the Louisiana State Open and a member of the Curtis Cup team. Dawn Coe-Jones, a 1983 All-American for Lamar, won her third career LPGA event in 1995 en route to finishing among the top 25 money winners for the seventh straight year. Coe-Jones was also elected to the Cardinal Hall of Honor in Oct., 1995. She is a 1997 inductee in the National Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Hall of Fame. Two other former Lady Cardinals who enjoyed professional careers are Jennifer Wyatt and Gail Anderson Graham. Wyatt won a LPGA event in 1992 and Graham collected her first victory in 1995 at the Fieldcrest Canon Classic. Graham was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor on Feb. 25, 2000. Other Lamar golfers who have played professionally include Lori Brock, Patty Grant, Lynn Cooke Parker and Dawn Kortage. Coe-Jones led Lamar to the 1983 NCAA Championships where the Lady Cardinals finished seventh as a team. Coe-Jones finished 11th individually, the highest finisher ever for a Lady Cardinal golfer. After sending individuals to the NCAA Championships in 1984 (Lori Brock - 94th place), 1987 (Jennifer Wyatt - T41) and 1989 (Elsabe Hefer - T75), Lamar again competed as a team in 1991. Pat Park, who was instrumental in the building of the Lamar golf program, was named the 1991 National Coach of the Year and West Region Coach of the Year. Lamar once again made a solid showing as it took eighth place. Katharina Larsson (T21) and Louisa Bergsma (T26) both posted top 30 finishes for the Lady Cardinals. Bergsma returned to the NCAA Championships in 1992 as an individual and tied for 37th. Bergsma now serves as the Director of Operations for the Southern Texas PGA, which is located at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas. She was part of the 2006 Cardinal Hall of Honor Induction class. For the first time in 1993, Lamar was able to compete for a conference championship as the Sun Belt Conference sponsored women’s golf. Lamar dominated Dawn Coe-Jones the tournament in 1993, winning the team title by 29 strokes behind a medalist performance from Bergsma. Lamar was awarded a trip to the 1993 NCAA Regionals and placed 18th as a team. Bergsma was Lamar’s top finisher, tying for 51st place. In 1994, Lamar was even more impressive at the SBC Tournament, winning by 40 shots. Bresha Marshall took home the individual

title on her way to being named All-SBC. She was joined on the all-conference team by Andrea Dobson, Melissa Isham and Karen Saevarsdottir. Laura Myers also picked up SBC Coach of the Year honors. Dobson and Saevarsdottir each played in the 1994 NCAA Regionals, with Dobson finishing 12th and moving on to the NCAA Championships where she tied for 91st. Gail Graham Lamar made it three Sun Belt titles in a row in 1995 with a 25stroke victory. Dobson took home individual medalist honors for Lamar, and was named All-SBC for the third straight year. Shirin Hornecker and Marshall were also named to the all-conference squad. The Lady Cardinals would win their final SBC title in 1996 as Hornecker won individual medalist honors. Hornecker, Saevarsdottir and Lotte Moeller were named All-SBC, and Myers picked up her second Coach of the Year honor. After leaving the Sun Belt and joining the Southland Conference, Lamar competed for a team title in 2002. While the Lady Cardinals did not win the championship that first year, Catrin Joyce (1st Team), Casey Cain (2nd Team) and Helen Kunick (2nd Team) were all recognized by the league’s coaches. Lamar did pick up a team title in 2003 as Brad McMakin was named SLC Coach of the Year and Cain was named first-team AllSLC. SLC Freshman of the Year Hillary Zeigler won individual medalist honors at the 2005 conference tournament as Lamar won its second Southland title. Brian White was named the SLC Coach of the Year, and Cain was named first-team all-conference for the third straight season. Lamar would defend its crown in 2006 as yet another freshman would win individual medalist honors at the SLC Championships. This time it was Therese Nilsson who would pick up the victory for Lamar on her way to being named Freshman of the Year and firstteam all-conference. Nilsson would complete her four-year career in 2009 as the only Southland Conference player to be named first-team all-conference four times. Lamar just missed out on winning four straight conference titles as the Lady Cardinals finished second at the SLC Tournament in both 2007 and 2008. Senior Stine Pedersen became the third Lady Cardinal to win individual medalist honors at the Southland Conference Championships as she won a sudden-death playoff on the third hole in 2011. Lamar placed second at the tournament, with Pedersen being named first-team all-conference and Julie Aime taking home second-team honors. Julie Aime earned second-team all-conference accolades for the second straight season in 2012 as Lamar took home a third place finish at the Southland Conference Championships. Senior Sarah Nicholas closed her collegiate career with an eighth place finish at the league tournament to lead the Lady Cardinals.
