A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Hi, my name is Emily Wilson, and I’m your 2021-2022 Key Club President. What I’m most excited about this year is being back in person. I know last year was difficult for many of us, and our club had to quickly adapt to a completely virtual experience. Now that we can host in-person volunteering opportunities, we’re planning to have a mix of both in-person and virtual opportunities, so the ability to serve is accessible for everyone. We’ve already had our first meeting of the year, and it was fantastic getting to see everyone’s faces. Our biggest goal for this year is to increase general membership and remind everyone what Key Club is all about: selfless service. Along with this, I can’t wait for our officer team to organize new social events and implement volunteer opportunities that we haven’t seen before.

TIPS FOR BALANCE

A LITTLE ABOUT EMILY Emily is vice president this year, and it's her second year being a key club officer. She is fun, outgoing, smart, and always full of new ideas. From my perspective, I cannot wait to see what she will bring. Go to page 5 to see more about Moi!

School and its related extracurriculars have always taken up a bit of my time. Y’know just maybe 9 hours spent inside the building itself, along with 3 hours of homework, and that’s not counting the possibility of an afterschool tennis match. While I participate in activities such as orchestra, tennis, and Key Club, keeping a delicate balance has not always been easy, but implementing certain habits can make it more manageable. Use a planner, and create a to-do list every day. Whenever I wake up in the morning I organize my to-do list using an app on my phone. I add tasks and specify if they need to be finished today or at a later date. Planning is also key in time management and prioritizing. If I have a fundraising event I could begin planning a month in advance or a meeting presentation that has to be finished in 3 days, I can plan with my task list and ensure that I get the presentation done.

Don’t be afraid to delegate. As the Key Club president, I get flooded with requests and tasks I can do for my team. From ordering t-shirts to

remember that no matter what you will make mistakes, and that’s okay because you’re only human. Photo Caption: Emily holding up our shirt for this year.

Try your best to get 8 hours of sleep. I know many of us teenagers struggle even achieving 6 hours sometimes, but sleep impacts your ability to perform and manage time effectively. It’s proven that a sleep deficiency or drastic change in sleep schedule can affect you for multiple days after the initial night. A lack of sleep can affect your ability to focus and make decisions. These are both crucial aspects of being efficient inside and outside the classroom. A lack of sleep may cause you to make many small mistakes, which become a laborious task to fix and correct over time.

Throughout the school year, Key Club offers multiple volunteer opportunities every month. But, during the summer, there aren’t as many volunteer opportunities offered through Key Club. It’s on yourself to find places to volunteer and help better the community. With more free time in the summer I wanted to help out around the community as much as I could. Some events that I participated in were volunteering at Mission Arlington and a vacation bible school program at my church. Key Club has motivated me and taught me how to be able to volunteer on my own outside of Key Club.

Due to the pandemic, our school has been either virtual or hybrid for the whole of last school year. Because of this, the service events that we offered were very limited; they mostly consisted of online opportunities to serve. So, when summer came around, I was eager to look around for places I could volunteer in-person. My church for example offered a couple opportunities over the summer. Helping out at Mission Arlington and volunteering at our church vacation bible school were two of the main ones.

POST-PANDEMIC EXPECTATION

Photo Caption: our table where new members joined key club at viking fest

As summer finally came to a close and students began to pour into the halls of Lamar High School after what felt like an eternity of anticipation, everything began going back to normal. The

CARING OUR WAY OF LIFE Key Club motto

familiar school bells rang at their regularly scheduled times, teachers opened their classrooms with welcoming smiles, and the cafeteria bustled with life once more. But perhaps most excitingly, clubs began recruiting students as they once did. Posters, QR codes, Remind links, and more were flying about as different student organizations and teams eagerly tried to catch the attention of students. For Key Club, this meant passing out dum-dums at orientation and showing love to

everyone who came across our table.

At that moment, I knew that our year as a club would be a success. Throughout the As a senior and veteran officer, I had many concerns regarding our club at the beginning of the year. For instance, I feared that Key Club would face a drastic decline in membership due to the oddity of our previous year together. Because the majority of Lamar High School’s students attended school strictly online the past year, there were almost two entire classes (nearly 1,600 people) who had never even heard of Key Club before! To add on to our predicament, the majority of our previous officer team graduated in May of 2021, meaning almost everyone on our new officer team had never held a leadership position in Key Club before. Furthermore, we even introduced a new sponsor to the team! However, despite all of the challenges stacked against us, Key Club came back stronger than ever! Membership was just as high as it was in the years before the pandemic, and our officer

meeting, all of our prospective members were fully immersed in the information on the screen, and I could see the spark igniting as many realized that they had found a safe space that they could call home at Lamar. In the face of changes coming from every direction and stepping out of a strictly virtual school environment for the first time in over a year, our officer team stepped up to make sure that Key Club could still provide a community for people to share their love for service. Following our first meeting, all my anxieties were cast away as I realized that our club had the passion it would need to survive. Come pandemic or shine, this organization will continue to grow at Lamar as long as we continue to uphold the Key Club motto: “Caring- our way of life.”

team stepped up to the plate with a new strategy for communicating. Excited for our first meeting, our officers got to work right away, creating an informative slideshow that

Photo Caption: a picture of three key club officers during viking fest

explained the purpose and history of Key Club, provided information on how to sign up, and described each of the different service opportunities (both in-person and digital) that would be offered during the fall semester. At last, after several officer meetings and the creation of a carefully planned agenda, the day of our first Key Club meeting finally arrived. Initially, I feared that very few people would show up to the meeting or that students unfamiliar with the school building would give up on finding the meeting room and just go home. But as I stepped into Room 284, I was completely shocked! Nearly every desk was already full, and I saw faces from all different grade levels, both returning and new.

High school is a phase of life in which an individual gains many of their life experiences and memories. Many do this by joining various clubs provided to them by their school. Among the plethora of school clubs is Key Club, known for its community service based activities. Every year, our Key Club program is gaining new members as new students flood into the school. However, it is important to note that the new members can always have a change of mind and leave the club at their will. In order to prevent this, there has to be plans that encourage the members to continue in the club.

An essential need in a club is the factors that pull in the members. Based on the purpose of Key Club, new members can be retained by the resources the officers provide to them. In order for the club to function and the members to have a purpose, service opportunities are a must. New joining members are much more likely to stay if they are provided with opportunities to serve as well as encouragement. Therefore, the officers of the club should be responsible for the planning and organizing of different services. However, a club should also be able to incorporate other forms of entertainment, such as team building activities or socials. Through this, the members won’t feel the club is time consuming and simply work based. Instead, they’ll be able to enjoy their time in the club while gaining many experiences.

Additionally, in a club, there has to be communication, not only within the officers but also within the club itself. If the activities done in the club were only based on officers and what was fun, easy or convenient for them, the initial interest of the newly joining members would easily disappear. Furthermore, the whole purpose of the club is defeated when members are not participating or given the choice to do so. Therefore, it is crucial for the club to give its members the ability to share their own thoughts and suggest ideas. This will allow the members to feel that they have a place within the club and the grand scheme of the group. It also creates a sense of assurance so that they can vocalize their opinions in a place they learn to become comfortable in. It’s known that to run a club, it needs members to sustain it. To keep the members interested in the club, the officers have to ensure their involvement in the club. This is done by giving the joining members the needed means that allows them to function in the club. Another method is to ensure that their voices and suggestions are heard. In this way, the members feel reassured and comfortable, ultimately creating a fun and successful Key Club experience.

HUMANS OF TEXAS OKLAHOMA By

Greeting! My name is Laith. I am a Junior at Lamar High School. I tend to avoid being in after school or during school activities in general because I don't really enjoy any of the organizations they have. But there was one organization that got my interest. This is why I am a proud member of the Key Club Organization. Key Club is run by the great Lamar High School students.

Firstly, what is Key Club? Key Club is an international, student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character, and develop leadership. This was a great way for students to perform service hours that can be counted as community service hours for key club while making sure you serve your community. This was a great way for me to get involved in serving the community while still getting credit hours.

For instance, I learned to stand up for what is wrong and what is right by taking full responsibility and leading the way. Honestly I never had instructions on how to succeed in these four years. All I was told is to make the most of it, but also not to let go of a successful future. I felt like I did not belong at the school. Therefore, by joining Key Club it made it seem like I had a place at my school. Being a part of Key Club is more than just the service and hours you get. It is about being a leader and taking responsibility, learning new things, and making everlasting relationships.Being part of a family, is such an overwhelmingly great experience. I learn new things about my friends, my peers, and the world around me through Key Club.
