(Fall)ing in love with the Key Club By By Nick Nick Astie Astie

My name is Nick, and Key Club has made a massive impact on my life. It’s allowed me to meet new people, support my community and most importantly see the impact we make as a club in our community. There have been countless times in my Key Club journey where I’ve seen people light up because of the help we are providing. This is why I fell in love with Key Club. Being able to be that aid and support and seeing the joy filled eyes of the people we impact, truly makes me ecstatic to be a part of an organization that is centered around making a positive impact on our neighborhood and surrounding communities. One instance I can vividly remember from volunteering, was at the canned food drive at Mission Arlington. Me and my friends had worked in the mission arlington food pantry for a few hours, we were stacking, and organizing the canned foods. After my friends and I had finished working on putting all the canned foods away, Tilly (the founder of Mission Arlington), had come around and saw the work we had done. Seeing Tilly’s eyes light up and her childlike smile made me so happy I couldn’t help but smile back. Another volunteer opportunity that comes to mind was a fall festival at a local elementary school. I was running a booth at the festival when a lady and her daughter came up to me.

Photo of Luke and I (I'm on the left) at Mission Arlington

They were interested in the activity I was responsible for, which was the photo booth, but the lady realized she didn’t have her phone! She wanted to take a photo with her kids, so I offered to take the photo for her and send it via text. The woman was overjoyed when I told her this, and gladly agreed to take the photo with my phone. Once I’d taken the photo and sent it to her, the lady thanked me with a huge smile on her face and went with her kids throughout the rest of the festival. These are just two of the countless times I’ve experienced this through Key Club that have made me fall in love with the organization. Being able to positively impact someone's life even at our young age in high school, truly makes a difference, even if you might think otherwise. Seeing everyone's faces that I have made a positive impact on through my efforts has truly made my time here at Lamar High School so special. I would definitely recommend to everyone at Lamar and anyone else who is in high school to reach out and see if their school has a Key Club Organization. It truly makes a difference in your life and the lives of others in the school and community.

Favorite Event So Far By By Luke Walsh ByLuke LukeWalsh Walsh

I would say my favorite service this year definitely has to be the river legacy festival. The river legacy fall festival is the annual festival held at river legacy park in North Arlington around the fall. I did go last year but I would say that this year was better than last year. The previous year's festival was pretty good though. I met a lot of people that year and made some new friends along the way too. It was also kinda miserable for me too. I stood in the gaming stand and had to do dino bowling. I had to deal with kids which was fine but tiring because you had to use your back a lot to help the kids with the bowling pins. I also spilled water on my jeans which did not feel nice. At the end of the day though, I would say that it was worth the six hours of effort. On the other hand I would say that this year's festival was a lot better. I was more prepared for it, by bringing things like comfortable clothes and a good quality water bottle so I can stay hydrated. I did take the afternoon shift like last year, I would’ve done the morning shift but no one was doing the afternoon one. I got there in a transport van with some people I knew from school and went to the festival. They did put me in the games again but this time I got to relax a little more because of the game I got which was dino toss. I got to relax and they gave us some Chick Fil La too which tasted great. The crowd of people that came by was mostly polite too, and it was nice to see people have fun at this place. I was at that booth for about 3 hours then one of the people from my school wanted to switch jobs with me, and I agreed. She was doing a bouncy slide type of game. She said that it was chaotic over there due to the hyperactive kids, but when I got there it wasn’t too bad. Sure I mean there were some crazy kids there, one of them even almost tipped the bouncy house over . But it was nice, I got to sit there and relax for the next couple hours and watch everyone have some fun. After 3 more hours it was time to clean up, we started by dismantling things like chairs and tables. Then we started to pick up tables from around the park. It was actually kinda cool, we got to ride around in an atv with little storage attached to it. While the labor was not easy, glad I didn’t lose my fingers, it was fun. After that we got on the van and I went home. Overall a pretty good experience.

How the Key Club Changed me By Sara Lim Hello, my name is Sara Lim. This is my fourth year in Key Club, and I am the Key Club President here at Lamar! I play the violin in the symphony orchestra at Lamar, and I’m also on varsity tennis. I enjoy drawing/painting and cooking in my free time (if I’m not drowning in homework haha). Volunteering has always been a part of my life since my parents brought my siblings and me to many volunteering events throughout our childhood. And when I found out that Lamar had a club that emphasized volunteerism, I was elated to join! Joining Key Club last year as a freshman, I didn’t have very high expectations. But, as I started hanging out and volunteering with the people in Key Club, I realized that this club wasn’t only about volunteering and bettering the community; but a family. Key Club is one united family to me. Unlike other clubs, Key Club reaches out to people/organizations to help them! It’s an amazing family to be a part of. Going to service opportunities together and growing as a better human being is a valuable outcome of being in Key Club to me.

As I mentioned previously, I play the violin. I started playing the violin in 4th grade of my own will because I thought it sounded pretty. I don’t only participate in the orchestra in school, but I use my ability for others too. For example, at Christmas, my mom organizes a group of my friends and me to go sing and play carols in nursing homes. Doing this brings smiles and joy to the people watching us. It also brings me joy to see that we’ve brightened their day. I’m glad that I can use my violin “skills” to make others happy in our community. A fun fact about me is that I sow! I’ve been sowing masks for my local church drive, and now I’m sowing masks for the Lamar band booster club. I also plan on sewing masks in the near future to donate to a hospital called Scottish Rite because they’ve helped me when I had to go there for a year and now I want to give back to them. I hope that here at Key Club we can start a sowing service opportunity to donate masks to our community too! I look forward to creating more memories in Key Club during my last year of high school! I can’t wait for Christmas. And most of all - I can’t wait to volunteer with the Key Club family again.

The key club so far has planned quite a few events. It's only up to november and we have already had a lot of opportunity services. We have our monthly Arlington Public library or APL books on wheels service. This service is where people go to the Arlington public library and help around and they also do things like arts and crafts. This event is usually from 4:30 to 6:30pm and is usually on wednesdays. The other occasional service we have is the Mission Arlington services. Mission Arlington services can vary from time to time. One time they had us paint a wall for them, and help them stack books into bookshelves for the kids. Another time they had us help sort out shoes and sheets for them. Then stock the shelves for one of their stores. There are events we had unique to this year, like the 5-10k fun run. We had to get up around 5am and get there at 6am to help people with running. I worked to hand the people medals and water as well, while other Key club members helped them sign up and get their shirts. That was a fun event to help out at. Another event we had was the annual River Legacy Fall Festival. This festival is where we helped out with things like concessions, games, and many more things. You could choose the morning shift 10-4pm, or the afternoon shift 4-10pm. Each of them would be 6 hours long. Unlike other events this one usually happens once a year usually. We have also had other events at River Legacy events like Privet patrol. The Privet Patrol happened at the River Legacy park. We went there to pick up this invasive plant called privet. We got there around 10 and the event lasted until around 12pm, while it was hot and hard labor it was a fun event to be at. The other events they offer all the time are the online ones. One of these online events is the free rice event. Basically on this website you help with questions and every time to get one right you get a grain of rice, you keep on doing this and then eventually you fill a bowl or rice. What this actually does is feed hungry people around the world by feeding them rice through this website. I believe that you get 1 service hour for every 1000 grains of rice you fill. I'm sure there's more events I forgot about but these are the ones I remember having so far.
