Say ‘NO’ at Knights game to reduce DV

Melissa Histon, Clint Newton, Helen Cummings and Jon Chin say ‘No’ to domestic violence at McDonald Jones Stadium

Reducing domestic violence in our community will be a feature of half time activities at the Knights’ home game against the Warriors on Saturday 5 August. In 2016 local charity, Got your Back Sista, asked the people of the Hunter to say ‘No to domestic violence’ in a community rally. This year, the charity has worked closely with the Newcastle Knights and McDonald Jones Stadium to use the half time break to again ask the people of the region to ‘Say No’. It is expected that about 300 people wearing ‘Say No’ T-shirts will march onto the field at half time while a video and anthem are played. (continued on page 2)

Say ‘No’ at Knights game (continued from page 1) The crowd will be asked to join in by using purpose designed signs that say ‘No’ to domestic violence and ‘Yes’ to ending the silence. Got Your Back Sista Founder, Melissa Histon, said that the initiative hoped to unite all sectors of the community to say we will not tolerate domestic violence. “We are most grateful to the Newcastle Knights for allowing the charity to be part of the half-time entertainment. It is such a tremendous opportunity to invite thousands of local people to join this important conversation,” Melissa said. “Our common goal is to stop the acceptance of violence across our world. Given that most of us work with, live near, or are related to someone who has experienced violence in their home or in their lives, it is not someone else’s problem. This is our region’s problem and we must do everything in our power to stop it. One more incidence of violence in our community is not acceptable,” she said. The event will also serve to raise funds for women who are establishing their lives after fleeing domestic violence. Got Your Back Sista was established as a registered charity in 2016 and works in collaboration with local refuges and services to provide women with vouchers and store credits to purchase essential items as part of the establishment of a new and safe home for themselves and their children. Items have included beds, refrigerators, household consumable items and kitchen appliances. It also provides workshops and a mentoring program. The organisation has to date provided more than $53,000 in support to local women. To be part of the choreographed on-field activity, you can make a donation of just $20 which includes the ‘Say No’ T-Shirt by registering at www.mycause. com.au/events/gybsknights/ Note that your donation does not include a ticket to the Knights game. You must have game day entry to the stadium also.

Cats in the neighbourhood thanks to YPT Based on the popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle Cats during which one special cat is selected to ascend to the heaviside layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, CATS opened in London in May 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. CATS’ London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran for over 18 years. Hamilton’s Young People’s Theatre’s production, CATS (Abridged) is adapted for performance by a younger cast. The season is currently underway and continues on Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm and Sundays at 2pm until 12th August. Tickets are $19 and are still available in limited numbers for most performances. To book go to ypt.org.au, call 4961 4895 on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm or call into the theatre on the corner of Lindsay and Lawson Streets Hamilton.

CHAMBER

Chat by Nathan Errington President of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce

Thinking locally

I was reminded last month again of the rich diversity of our community when many people from our suburb paused to acknowledge NAIDOC Week. Hundreds of people marked the beginning of the week with a flag raising ceremony before a parade to a family fun day at Smith Park to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Among them, June Rose was proudly nursing her 21st great grandchild, 11 week old Nayeli. Like all events in our Hamilton community, NAIDOC Week served to remind me of the importance of our local history and how it can can help us plan our future. The Station Park public safety project is progressing well with the Chamber working closely with Newcastle Now and Newcastle Council to plan the development. We expect that the project will be rolled over the next 12 months. The Chamber board met last month and on the agenda remains a commitment to improving the James Street Plaza with further work being undertaken to secure funding to enable the design project to begin. Staying ‘local’, government elections for Newcastle will be held on 9 September. Hamilton Chamber is joining forces with its counterparts in Throsby Basin, Adamstown, New Lambton and Mayfield to hold a Mayoral debate. The debate will invite all candidates to present their views about business and communities and participate in a forum where guests can submit questions. More information is available at our website at www.hamiltonchamber.com.au Hamilton Chamber will also be working with Adamstown Chamber to hold at Ward 2 candidate forum. This event will be held at 7.00am on Tuesday 1 August at The Kent. Bookings can be made by visiting our website www. hamiltonchamber.com.au Alternatively, you can speak with one of your Chamber Directors: Jim Garis, Andy Rossi, John Lis, Rob Burton, Stephen Hunt and Donna Field.

You could own your own bar for $25 Everyone loves a raffle, but this prize is a little bigger than a meat tray from the pub. At the end of August, one lucky punter will become the owner of Hamilton’s German bier cafe Das Hund Haus, for the princely sum of $25. “The idea of someone winning this bar and it giving them the opportunity to cross the threshold into their own venue is an amazing opportunity,” owner James Sneddon said. Mr Sneddon has secured a permit from Liquor and Gaming NSW to hold his raffle as a trade promotion, offering two-for-one meal vouchers. These give the buyers five entries into the raffle to win the business, plus $30,000 cash. After being at the helm for almost three years, Mr Sneddon said it was time to move on and pursue a new dream - his recently-launched online sexual health clinic, Stigma Health. Beaumont Street’s Das Hund Haus will change “That dream needs all my attention now so the hands when the raffle is drawn on 31st August time has come for me to set my sights on changing healthcare in Australia,” he said. Book Review sponsored by Q’s Books

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo Translated by Don Bartlett

The Snowman was first published in Norway in 2007. Nesbo’s fictional detective Harry Hole is an introverted loner, heavy smoker, struggles with alcoholism and has a younger sister with Down syndrome to whom he’s strongly attached. He’s also a brilliant detective in Oslo and has a reputation for being difficult to work with. Coming out in October this year as a movie starring Michael Fassbender, the 559 pages of The Snowman take you on a thrilling, intriguing and at times shocking roller-coaster ride as Harry tracks down Norway’s first serial killer. Since 1980 several women have mysteriously disappeared but it’s not until 2004 when Harry is investigating murders around Oslo that he discovers most of them occur just after the first snowfall of winter, the victims are married with children, and each time a macabre snowman is found nearby. Several suspects are investigated and it’s a real spell-binder as first one then other lines of enquiry turn out to be dead ends, some literally, and Harry’s job and indeed his own life are threatened. Can he solve this crime before it gets the better of him? Originally written in Norwegian, The Snowman loses nothing in its translation to English. If you’re into crime thrillers Nesbo is a master of the genre. But there’s more to him – he’s a former economist, lead singer and songwriter for a rock band, and has written children’s books, his first, Doktor Proktors Prompepulver, translates in English to Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder. It must be worth reading. Reviewed by Andrew “The Scotsman” -------------------------------------------------------------What are your thoughts on The Snowman? Humans of Hamilton Sam Reynolds This month I chatted with musician, composer and owner of Reynolds and Co. Sam Reynolds over his coffee. Making myself comfortable in the soft armchairs of his first floor music school, I was looking forward to learning more about this human whom I’d met through the local Hamilton business community. Hamilton locals will recognise Sam as the guy with curly auburn hair. You’ll often see him riding his bike between his work, home in Lindsay Street and to Hamilton Public School. Always smiling and friendly, I think that’s why I first met him. Sam employs around 12 local musicians at Reynolds and Co. He also started the Hamilton Public School band and lives in Hamilton with his wife, Jacqui and their two children. I’m always intrigued by what it is about Hamilton that draws people to live here. So far mostly by choice and with the intention to stay long term. Sam first moved here 16 years ago, initially to study music, he found teaching, composing and family took over. By 2010 he was juggling freelance composing jobs including for the American People’s Choice Awards for 3 years running from 2010 to 2012 and organising music teachers which lead to the formation of Reynolds and Co. The school is located on the first Page 14 > Hamilton Local > August 2017

A regular feature by Ahn Wells

Sam Reynolds in the recording studio he built for his business floor of the HP Chambers buildings on Beaumont Street, most of us walk past maybe peering into the stairwell. What lies inside are many different businesses including Sam’s. Rooms with music stands, electric pianos, microphones and art by his wife fill the space. There’s even a sound proof studio Sam built himself for recording (that’s where the photo was taken). His business has grown organically, mostly from word of mouth, I was amazed to learn from starting to teach bass and guitar, his school now offers violin, cello, piano and vocals with both teachers and students regularly busking in Hamilton at Hunt & Gather Markets and during live gigs at Northern Star Hotel as well as Lizotte’s in Lambton. Sam believes performing live, with other musicians and in front of both an attentive audience and busking is all part of being a

musician. It also seems to me, he loves teaching music. When asked by his children’s school, he was willing to take on the challenge of not only creating a school band but also doing it his way, with guitars, drums, vocals and rock songs which Sam rearranges for each instrument. Working with kids between the ages of 8-12 years, the band meets once a week before school starts to rehearse and have played in front of their school, parents/family and during a local festival held at the school. So, when you run into Sam around the neighbourhood ask him about music: ask him about composing, conducting, teaching and his face will light up. That’s when you know you’ve met an interesting human. Until next month. Thanks for reading. If you know a ‘Human of Hamilton’ whose story we should tell please email us at info.hamiltonlocal@ gmail.com

JHH parking fees

Patients and carers who frequently visit John Hunter Hospital are benefitting from reduced car parking fees under expanded concessions which came into effect on 1 July. Under the new policy at John Hunter Hospital, a three-day discounted ticket now costs a maximum of $10.90 and a seven-day ticket $21.70, and both allow multiple entries and exits. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said a website and smartphone app – the first of its kind in Australia – will provide information on how to access the discounted rates.

Type 2 diabetics sought to help in heart risk study Researchers from the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital, led by Professor Manohar Garg and Dr Sham Acharya are looking for 50 volunteers to take part in a sixweek clinical trial which will examine the use of curcumin and/ or omega-3 fats for lowering heart disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes have up to four times higher risk of developing heart disease. They have higher levels of blood fats (triglycerides) and low levels of HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol) than those without diabetes. Combined with underlying chronic inflammation in people with type 2 diabetes, increase in blood lipids further escalates the risk of developing heart disease. Since blood lipids and chronic inflammation are manageable risk factors, a multidimensional approach may be ideal to efficiently target this multifaceted disease. We aim to reduce both the blood fats and inflammation using curcumin and omega-3 fats simultaneously. Curcumin will

UoN researchers are seeking 50 volunteers to assist with the study be delivered in tablet form and participants will be advised to get omega-3 fat from fish oil capsule. They just need to take two capsules in the morning and evening with meals. They don’t need to change their routine medications, dietary or physical activity during the trial duration. We carry out a wide range of measurements such as diet and physical activity analysis, body composition, blood pressure and blood tests for lipids, glucose and inflammation. Volunteers in this

study will receive either curcumin, fish oil alone, both together or placebo. At the end of the trial volunteers can receive a report on their body composition and blood reports, just like a free health check up with simultaneous contribution to advancement in scientific knowledge for a healthy community. Hidden Hamilton The Mechanics Institute

Who could miss the signs of building works on Tudor Street, just west of Beaumont Street, Hamilton? The streetscape is dominated by a sea of scaffolding, protective hessian and colourful signage. Four years ago, in June 2013, I wrote a blog post about the building that had once been described in the local press as ‘the handsomest building of its kind in the district’. Designed by prolific Newcastle architect Frederick Menkens, it was opened to great fanfare by the NSW Premier, Sir Henry Parkes, in August 1888. Then 125 years later, I found this once-grand building just a sad ruin. How was it, I wondered in my blog, that this impressive building has lost its purpose? Wasn’t there anyone, anywhere, who could grasp its potential? Mechanics Institutes played a vital role in the community at a time when education was a privilege of the elite.

By Ruth Cotton

In the early nineteenth century, Institutes aimed to provide ‘working men’ with free access to technical education, scientific books and even literature. The Hamilton Mechanics Institute was considered a great community asset. Upstairs was a reading room with daily newspapers, a library, a meeting room and a billiards room. Downstairs was a large hall to seat 400 people, with a stage. By the early 1920s, the educational role of the Institute was becoming less relevant as government took over. It functioned more like a community club – until the growth of social clubs usurped this role, too. In the 1940s the Hamilton RSL Sub Branch purchased the premises and the building became known as Anzac House. However, the anticipated expansion of the RSL never eventuated. By 2013, the RSL Club and Anzac House had been sold. Both buildings languished, appearing neglected and unloved. Then in December 2015, the public learned that the buildings would be part of an imaginative new development by siblings Daniel and Bernadette Connolly. Award winning architect Kevin Snell would incorporate the heritage building into Atrium, a landmark residential apartment building across both sites.

The site of the Mechanics Institute and RSL is being redeveloped as residential apartments A heritage plaque will be placed on the former Mechanics Institute when building is complete. At last, it will have a new purpose, and the chance of a new life. Read more about the historic buildings of Hamilton in my book Hidden Hamilton: Uncovering stories of Hamilton, NSW. SPINE

Matters by David Diehm

of Family Life Chiropractic

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is commonly first seen in children between the ages of 10 and 15, this is classified as “adolescent idiopathic scoliosis”. Scoliosis may affect both children and adults, however it is often a more serious condition in children because it may progress rapidly as the child grows. The cause of scoliosis is not completely understood, however current research suggesting a strong genetic factor. A scoliosis is a progressive, sideways curvature of the spine. It is more prevalent in girls, with the risk increasing rapidly from 11-14 years. Dancers are 12.4 times more likely to develop scoliosis.

The impact scoliosis may have on a child include: poor posture, muscle weakness, musculoskeletal pain, shoulder humping, rib humping and low selfesteem. A parent will often notice clothes that fit awkwardly, any newly discovered asymmetries that appear minor should be checked by a practitioner that specialises in the spine. It can be difficult for an untrained eye to detect the difference between posture issues and a developing scoliosis. If your child has been diagnosed with a scoliosis its also vitally important to understand the difference between a structural and functional scoliosis. The best treatment path depends on multiple variables, such as; age, angle of curves, skeletal maturity and the individuals personal aspirations (ie sport, career). Each scoliosis case is different and requires a very personalised approach, early detection will provide the best chance of a more conservative approach, late detection of a curve may reduce your options to surgery. The best outcomes are observed when it is detected early and treated correctly by experienced practitioners. If you have noticed changes with your child’s spine or posture please have them assessed. LAW

Matters by Katherine Guilfoyle of Newcastle Legal

From traffic offences to murder

Criminal law deals with a wide range of matters from traffic offences up to serious crimes against a person or property. If you have been either arrested, asked by police to attend a police station for a formal record of interview or charged with any criminal offence it is important that you speak to a lawyer as soon as possible. It is also critical that you do not make any statement to police before consulting your lawyer. Many people think that if they simply explain their account to police the arresting officers will be understanding and “let them off”. That very rarely happens in reality. A good lawyer can advise you about your legal rights and will: • explain what any charges mean; • advise what the police need to prove for you to be convicted (found guilty); • summarise the evidence against you and what your options are including advice on whether it might be best for you to plead guilty or not guilty; • assist you to prepare for the court hearing and represent you in court either on a plea of guilty or not guilty; and • advise of the penalties that may be imposed by the magistrate (Local Court) or judge (District Court and Supreme Court). If you choose to plead not guilty to some or all of the charges against you an experienced lawyer may be able to: • establish by the evidence that you are innocent or that there is at least reasonable doubt that you committed the offence; • challenge the admissibility of all or parts of the evidence the prosecution seeks to rely on resulting in the charges being dismissed; • utilise legal arguments and knowledge of case law to defend you successfully.

This month’s feature is Acrux Art Gallery which opened in October last year, started by emerging artist, Nadia Aurisch. Acrux refers to the 5th star in the Australian Southern Cross and reminds Nadia that when times get tough, as they often do when pursuing dreams, to look at the stars to be reminded of why she started the gallery in the first place. During August at Acrux, Julie Bowe is exhibiting abstract paintings in her first solo exhibition for 15 years. Based around storms, the exhibition is aptly titled Stormy Weather and depicts both the landscape and conceptually the apprehension and build up of exhibiting for the first time. Nadia encouraged Julie to exhibit in her gallery “to ease her back into the Newcastle art community” she said Visit Acrux Art Gallery on Tudor Street, Hamilton Acrux Art Gallery: Stormy Weather solo exhibition by Julie Howe. MONEY

Matters by Margaret Glenn CPA of Pritchard Partners

How much super is enough?

With the baby boomers moving into retirement, generations X and Y are now really questioning how much superannuation is enough. The industry ‘rule of thumb’ is that between 60% and 75% of gross pre-retirement income is a reasonable nest egg depending upon your retirement goals and levels of debt and other savings. The rate of contributions needed to achieve a goal will depend on the age a person is when they begin contributing, the performance of their fund, inflation rates and changes to salary.

Superannuation is now clearly recognised as the primary means for funding for retirement. Virtually all employees have superannuation contributions made on their behalf by their employer. The reality is that even employees whose working lives are just beginning are unlikely to be able to rely totally on these contributions for a financially secure retirement. The longer the period over which retirement is funded, the better. Compound interest ensures that the earlier any saving for retirement begins the greater the reward. The rate of return achieved by a fund can have a significant effect on the balance – therefore selection of an appropriate investment and the spread of investments within this vehicle are also important. The broad range of investment options offered by superannuation funds also allows for the ‘spreading of the risk’ through diversification. Most importantly, the very best advice will come from using the professional services of a trusted accountant and financial adviser who can help you take control of your financial future. Margaret Glenn is a Certified Practicing Accountant and director of Rees Pritchard Pty Limited.

PHARMACY

Medicines and breastfeeding

The first week of August, 1–7, is World Breastfeeding Week. In Australia, most babies (96%) are initially breastfed and it’s a key contributor to infant health. At this time, let’s consider taking medicines when breastfeeding. Medicines can be defined as either prescription (only available with a prescription from a healthcare professional such as a doctor), over-the-counter (available without a prescription, often from a pharmacy) and complementary (e.g. herbal, natural

and alternative medicines). Most medicines pass into breast milk but usually only in very small quantities. These quantities are generally too small to be harmful to the baby. Many women will take some kind of medicine when breastfeeding. Some breastfeeding mothers may need to take medicine regularly to treat a medical condition. Others may take medicine occasionally when required to treat a sudden, limiting condition such as a headache, cough or cold. It is important when using any medicine while breastfeeding to consider the benefits to the mother compared with any risk it may pose to the baby. Discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. Detailed information on medicines and breastfeeding is available from the Self Care Fact Card, Medicines and breastfeeding, which is available from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information. NPS MedicinesWise is a helpful consumer website that has information about medicines and breastfeeding. You can find this site at www.nps.org.au and search for breastfeeding. www.Mothersafe.org.au is another great resource for the latest information for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. For the nearest Self Care pharmacy location phone the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia on 1300 369 772, or Ask Piggotts! Anthony Piggott
