War declared on food costs A not for profit organisation helping people who receive a Government benefit reduce their weekly grocery costs has set up shop in Newcastle. The Food War provides low cost dry groceries, frozen foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, personal care and laundry items as well as free bread daily from its newly leased shop at Hassall Street Hamilton South. Founder Elsie Cooper told Hamilton Local that “The idea of Food War was to make it a little easier for people on a limited income to make ends meet.” “It’s pretty clear that for those on Government Benefits incomes have not kept pace with the cost of living in recent years. We’re just doing what we can to bridge that gap.” Elsie said.

Elsie Cooper (far right) and the team at Food War Inc. Hamilton South Food War relies entirely on donated goods and volunteer labour receiving no funding from government, churches or other institutions.

Hamilton is the fourth Food War outlet, joining Beresfield, Cessnock and Raymond Terrace stores which have opened progressively over recent years. (continued page 2) Julio Fuentes Lead Optometrist

Youth Week success in Hamilton South

Samaritans celebrated Youth Week with a community event organised in consultation with young people in the Hamilton South area in April. There was a great turn out from the community with over 150 people attending to enjoy a BBQ, games, workshops, entertainment and cultural activities. Each young

person also received a show bag full of information resources and goodies. “What made this event stand out was that we were able to partner with students from Newcastle TAFE who were studying a Certificate IV in Youth Work. They were able to assist in running the event, as well as many of them

Zac and Chloe Callen enjoy Youth Week

performing, singing, playing the guitar, the haka and rapping,” Rachelle Wills, event organiser said. Samaritans extended thanks to Newcastle City Council for providing grant funding and to the many services and individuals who collaborated to make the event such a success.

This is the first time I’ve been inspired to write a letter to any publication. Congratulations on a truly useful first issue. I have been aware for a while that I needed to make arrangements for that time when I may not be able to manage my own affairs. Law Matters was a useful reminder that I should have a Power of Attorney document prepared and explained the role an Enduring Guardianship order would have in my life. I also wondered when the next Hunter & Gather market would be on and where I could get a pet sitter for a holiday later in the year. Three questions answered in one issue. Great publication. CHAMBER

Chat by Nathan Errington President of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce

What’s your view on James Street Plaza? Hamilton Chamber has begun an important process that will help shape the future of our suburb. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing quality work and lifestyle options in Hamilton, the Chamber held three workshops to gain initial input and objective feedback about the James Street Plaza area of Beaumont Street. It will be no surprise to anyone who lives or works in Hamilton that James Street Plaza needs attention. Through these workshops, the Chamber asked residents, people from our community and our members about their current perceptions, the impact of the current ambience and their views on future use. If you were unable to attend these workshops, or did not know they were being held, there are still many ways you can participate. The easiest way is to drop us an email to info@hamiltonchamber.com. au and provide us with your views on the Plaza. Alternatively, speak to one of our Board Directors and they can arrange for your feedback to be included into the consultation process. Hamilton Chamber Directors are: Jim Garis, Rob Burton, Andy Rossi, Donna Field, Stephen Hunt and John Lis. With this feedback, the Chamber hopes to undertake a design plan for a rejuvenated Plaza. Then the real task will begin to attract funding from the public and private sectors to create a place that will meet the needs of our community now and into the future. Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is a business membership-based organisation that is very proud of our rich heritage and excited about our key role in promoting opportunities for people to live, work and play within the suburb. This is an important step for Hamilton and I welcome your input and look forward to providing updates on progress.

HAMILTON CHAMBER is your business… Hamilton Chamber is a not-for-profit entity overseen by an elected management committee of volunteers selected from our membership base. Full membership is open to any business owner/operator or building owner within the Special Benefit Rate zones. We have a modest staff and a group of active volunteer local business owners to manage our day to day activities. Hamilton Chamber is a business advocacy group tasked with driving the Hamilton community forward and revitalising our great suburb. We use place-making projects, public events, partnerships with business and organisations, and strategic planning to bring life into our CBD. SOME OF OUR BEST-KNOWN PROJECTS INCLUDE: ■ Free wi-fi throughout Beaumont St ■ A Taste of Beaumont including iconic restaurants and cafes ■ Some of Newcastle city’s best street festivals like Beaumont Street Carnivale & China Week Festival If you’d like to know more about what we do, we encourage business owners/operators, residents, and other interested parties to participate in our Hamilton Monthly Networking Event which allow you to work closely with the community and our organisation.

Humans of Hamilton Angela Philip

I already knew this Human before we met for coffee, although I can’t remember when or where we first encountered each other. It would have been at an art exhibition opening or during a University event and it was many years ago. But I was keen to learn more about this one. Angela Philip is a Lecturer in Art History & Theory at the University of Newcastle, she moved into a rental in Cooks Hill the weekend before the Pasha Bulka storm hit in June 2007 and a year later she bought a cute little house in Bibby Street Hamilton. She first described Newcastle as “got it all” having moved from the chilly Australian capital, Canberra after completing her PhD and taking up the challenge to work in the world of academics at the University of Newcastle. Angela has been with the University for almost a decade. She and her colleagues are currently in the transient period of finishing off the Bachelor of Fine Art and starting the new, if somewhat controversial Bachelor of Creative Industries. Later this year, the first intake of Creative Industries students will be exhibiting artworks they have made in response to Newcastle’s city centre, exploring its hidden histories, people and character. The results will be displayed for a one day event in City Hall, Wheeler Place and Civic Park. Angela notes “It’s a big challenge for them. It will be their first foray into the field, hopefully it will be the basis for learning to take risks and push boundaries through creative thinking”. Like Jono last month, Angela Page 14 > Hamilton Local > May 2017

already had Hamilton in her sights as a place to live. “There is a nice community feeling in Hamilton, a cultural and social mix that I like”. “My street has a long-term community that look after each other” which has now fully embraced Angela. “I would like to start a community garden in my street” where all the neighbours could contribute to its up-keep and then use what is grown from it. Although this is not a new idea, there aren’t many community street gardens to be found in Newcastle with Hamilton being the perfect place to see if it would work. So I hope Angela gets this project off the ground (pun intended) with a bit of help from her street and maybe in a future

A regular feature by Ahn Wells

Hamilton Local, we’ll find out if she does. In the meantime, if you see Angela walking around Hamilton, say hello, tell her you read about her here. Look out for her browsing the shelves of MacLean’s Booksellers or maybe sitting quietly having a coffee at Eurobar. Then again you might find her catching up with friends on the outdoor seats at The Blind Monk or walking her dog around Gregson Park. And as Angela says “you get to know people in the shops” so why not start to get to know your own Humans of Hamilton. If you know a ‘Human of Hamilton’ whose story we should tell please email us at info.hamiltonlocal@ gmail.com

Newcastle’s Hunter Street : the first hundred years has just been published by local resident Julie Keating and documents some of the early buildings and happenings in Hunter Street. The book is the fourth in the series documenting Newcastle’s history in the nineteenth century. The other books trace the development of Lambton, Waratah & Mayfield and Merewether & The Junction. Photos, mainly from the Ralph Snowball Collections held by the Newcastle Region Library and the University of Newcastle, and newspaper articles of the day are used to illustrate life in the 1800s. Eats on the Street...The Best of Beaumont

7 year old chef to Thai farmers now cooks for Newcastle Aged only 7, Guitar Salacheep was put to work cooking with dangerous charcoal, boiling water and woks deep in rural Thailand. His family of farmers would arrive home from a hard day’s work each night expecting a solid feast. Years later, after an epic journey, Salacheep arrived in Sydney with just $90 and little English. Picked up and trained by two of Sydney’s top Thai restaurants, the former farm boy worked hard before opening his first restaurant in Surry Hills during 2014. Today, he employs close to fifty staff across his businesses. At 50 Beaumont Street in Hamilton, only the freshest, most intense flavours are served, as his family demanded all those years ago on the farm. Uber Thai’s traditional, centuries old preparation methods give modern, innovative Thai dishes a deeply authentic complexity unavailable in most Thai restaurants.

Hidden Hamilton Hamilton’s Turkish Baths

I was captivated by the exquisite photograph (opposite page) of the Hamilton Turkish Baths, discovered early in my journey to find out more about the suburb in which I’d come to live. The Turkish baths were built in 1879 by Francis W. Reay, who had settled in Newcastle in 1870. A medical herbalist and seller of patent and horse medicines, he had made money in the goldfields. Francis Reay became Mayor of Hamilton in 1887. People who lived in the mining settlements that would become Hamilton – the Borehole, Pit Town and Happy Flat – endured unhealthy, unsanitary living conditions. There was no running water, sewerage pipes or bathrooms. But this was not the primary target market of Francis Reay. An entrepreneur, he sought to attract ‘the well to do and ladies.’ The Hamilton Baths offered separate facilities for men and women, private consultations with practitioners, and ‘electric baths,’ an early form of tanning bed. A chemist shop promoted botanic and homeopathic preparations.

By Ruth Cotton

Australia rapidly embraced the concept of Turkish Baths, because of the hot climate and a growing understanding of health and hygiene. The baths themselves were closer to their Roman forerunners than Turkish, using dry heat instead of wet or vapour heat. Around 1900, the building was sold to two American immigrants, Silas Charles Rand, a doctor and his brother Thomas Henry Rand, a dentist. The building served as their professional rooms and private residences for over 60 years. So where were the Hamilton Turkish Baths? Through a descendant of Thomas Rand, Susan Kemp, I discovered that this historic building had once stood at 15-21 Denison Street, at the Hunter Street end. The boundaries of Hamilton were a little different then. Susan Kemp reflects on its passing: “The Turkish Baths, a grand building originally built to give comfort and cleanliness for the citizens of Newcastle, had much potential but was demolished in 1961. Its heritage value was not recognised and Newcastle lost a unique reminder of its social history.” This is an edited extract from my book ‘Hidden Hamilton: Uncovering stories of Hamilton, NSW.’ Hidden Hamilton and More Hidden Hamilton are available from a number of local booksellers and newsagents – to buy online or check for an outlet near you, go to http://hunterpress.com.au/ customerinformation.html

Art has long been a part of my daily life. These days it consumes it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But it does mean that I often take art for granted. I know where to find it and I have never questioned its importance to the bigger picture. In April, I was reminded of why art should matter to others. I attended the annual Collectors Care fundraising exhibition for The Samaritans Foundation held at Newcastle Art School, Hunter TAFE. This was the 8th annual exhibition curated by Gael Davies, each year she invites a group of ‘collectable’ Newcastle artists to exhibit and donate a portion of their sales to a Samaritans cause. This year it was to youth homelessness and they raised $8000.00. Gael managed Von Bertouch Galleries from 1979 until it closed in 2004 and this exhibition was originally based upon the famous Collectors Choice exhibition. In its hey-day, Collectors Choice would find buyers sleeping out for days waiting for the exhibition to open in order to purchase a collectable piece of art from the late well-known gallerist, Anne Von Bertouch. Anne had such respect for art, she spent her life encouraging the purchase of collectable art. In her Will she bequeathed a significant portion of her own art collection to the Newcastle Art Gallery. At the opening, Gael quoted Anne “Art holds a mirror to our times” and “Buy art because you like it”. These two quotes ringing in my ears and reminding me Why Art Matters. Art acts like a documentary of the society in which it is made and it reflects individual personality. In the end art will always be around us and it will only matters to you if you want it to. That’s the freedom of art and what makes it such as integral part of a civilised society. We are extremely fortunate in Newcastle to have strong independent art community, surrounded by publicly and government funded galleries and art organisations.

Diabetes

Approximately 3.6 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes while worldwide 366 million people are affected. National Diabetes Week runs annually and we are all encouraged to have checks and learn more about this disease. There are various types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin. This type represents 10-15

per cent of all cases of diabetes and is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in developed nations. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors, yet its incidence is increasing at a rate of about 3 per cent a year. In type 2 diabetes, which accounts for about 85% of all people with diabetes, insulin is still produced but does not work effectively. While it most often affects mature adults, more young people, even children, are getting type 2 diabetes. It’s very much a lifestyle disease and linked to the overall increase in weight among the population. Less well known is gestational diabetes - a form of diabetes that occurs in pregnancy and mostly disappears after the birth. This type may be caused by the woman’s body not being able to make enough insulin or not being able to use it correctly during pregnancy. It is usually found by having a blood test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. You can get more advice on diabetes from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s (PSA) Self Care health information or Ask Piggotts!

LAW

Matters by Rob Brook of Newcastle Legal

Moving forward after family break-down

When a family unit breaks down decisions need to be made about the relationship, children, property and finances so everyone can move forward with their lives. This is an extremely difficult period for everyone involved. Stress levels and emotions often run high. It can be really difficult to talk about things and agree upon decisions. There are four types of separation agreements: 1. An informal agreement between ex-partners on parenting and property arrangements. 2. A binding financial agreement for property arrangements with an independent lawyer advising each party. 3. Consent Orders agreed by the couple separating for both parenting and property arrangements and approved by a court usually without a hearing. 4. Contested court proceedings where the court hears evidence and imposes its own decisions on the parties. If you have children under 18 years the court will usually require you to participate in family dispute resolution (specialised mediation) before you commence family law proceedings. A court will generally order that parents have equal shared parental responsibility for any children of the relationship. That does not necessarily mean equal time spent with each parent which will be decided on what is considered to be in the best interests of the child. In deciding how to divide property a court considers 5 main points: 1. Length of relationship. 2. The assets and debts of the parties including superannuation. 3. How much each party has contributed financially and non-financially. 4. Earning capacity, who will be looking after any children, the health of family members, and other special needs. 5. Whether a proposed division of property is fair and reasonable overall.

SPINE

So you’ve slipped a disc have you?

This is perhaps one of the most common phrases I hear day to day. But did you know it doesn’t actually happen? A disc can’t slip! A rather important piece of anatomy that seems so misunderstood by so many. Your 23 discs are strategically positioned between the bones of your spinal column, attached to the vertebra, they act as shock absorbers and assist with movement.

A disc is comprised of a tougher outer ring structure and a softer, jelly like inner portion. Despite many popular yarns claiming the contrary they don’t and won’t slip. This may seem like semantics but with over 11 years of experience in helping people with disc complaints, it’s vital you understand the type of disc injury you are dealing with. You see a disc has many paths it could take, it may degenerate, bulge, prolapse, herniate or even sequestrate and the best course of action, management plan and outcome can be quite different for each. Often disc injuries will start with a small weakness or tear in the outer ring fibres, leading to some of the soft material migrating outwards. This can lead to the irritation of sensitive nerves, which may result in pain travelling down the course of the nerve. The well known example is the “sciatic nerve”. Many people walk around every day with bulging discs and experience no pain because there is no chemical irritation to the disc or to its surrounding structures. I hope this encourages you to understand your disc injury beyond a “slipped disc”.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to lower back pain that develops from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and travels from the lower back and down the back of each leg. When compressed or irritated the sciatic nerve can cause pain that will radiate from its origin in the lumbar spine (lower back), through the buttocks, down the back of the leg and possibly into the feet and toes. The sensation of sciatica varies among patients, however it is usually felt in one leg and is described as tingling and/or burning or prickling. The intensity of pain can also vary with some patients experiencing debilitating pain while others experience irritating pain. Sciatic pain may be aggravated by postures or activities that increase lumbar intervertebral disc pressure or cause further compression or irritation of the nerve. Many patients find sitting, bending forward, walking, and driving to be aggravating factors. The four most common causes of sciatica that we regularly treat in our practice are:

called the Piriformis. If the Piriformis spasms it can compress the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica-type pain. When sciatica-type pain is caused by the impingement of the sciatic nerve by the Piriformis muscle this condition is called Piriformis syndrome and is not considered true sciatica.

Disc Degeneration

When one or more of the lumbar intervertebral discs begins to degenerate due to aging or injury, proteins from inside the disc can be released and irritate the adjacent spinal nerves resulting in sciatic pain. When dealing with sciatica rest should be the first treatment approach. However, if there is no reduction in pain with rest alone, acupuncture is an excellent alternative. Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for sciatica because it is able to calm irritation of the sciatic nerve while relieving tension of the surrounding soft tissues that may be compressing the nerve. Ryan Samuels - Poke Acupuncture Registered Acupuncturist & Chinese Herbalist

Lumbar Disc Herniation

A herniated disc occurs when the inner portion of the disc known as the “nucleus pulposus” herniates or travels through the disc wall known as the “annulus”. The herniation of lumbar (lower back) intervertebral discs can compress the spinal nerve root causing sciatic pain down the leg.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

The Sacroiliac joint or commonly called the “SI joint” is located at the base of the spine. When there is a dysfunction of the SI joint it can irritate the L5 spinal nerve that sits on top of it causing sciatic-type pain.

Piriformis Syndrome

After the sciatic nerve leaves the lower back it travels under a deep muscle in the buttocks
