Charles a brass bloke Charles Webster of Hamilton has been announced as the winner of Lifeline Hunter’s Brass Bloke Award for 2017. Mr Webster, 74 survived child abuse, being shot in the head and becoming a quadriplegic in his early life to establish the Chuck Duck Charity. The charity which has been operating for 20 years assists disadvantaged young people by providing 6,000 to 8,000 free breakfasts a month for students, a bus to enable kids with special needs to attend school events and programs, and helps schools to implement bird therapy aviaries, bush tucker gardens and child safety programs. Lifeline Hunter Central Coast regional manager Rob Sams said the biennial award recognises local unsung heroes who have been through big challenges yet find the courage to give back to their community. The winner was announced at a Brass Blokes fundraising event in October where Charles was chosen from a field of five local men each with their own story of courage and determination. Hamilton Local is lovingly produced and carefully hand delivered each month to more than 6,500 residential letterboxes and businesses in Hamilton, Hamilton North, Hamilton South & Hamilton East and some parts of Broadmeadow (the parts that seem like they should be called Hamilton West). Find the latest news and information at www. hamiltonlocal.com.au or on our Facebook page and Instagram pages. If you enjoy receiving Hamilton Local in your letterbox please spend with the businesses you see advertising here. Without their support your local paper could not happen. It’s pretty simple really. Live local, be local, buy local...

(from page 1) At the event, the host of the ABCTV “Man Up” series Gus Worland and other speakers discussed the importance of resilience and shared stories of the brass blokes they have encountered. “The award and the event is an opportunity to inspire others and give them hope,” Mr Sams said. “Funds raised at the event are used to run Lifeline’s local face to face counselling, crisis support, training and bereavement support services,” he said. This is the third time the Award has been made. Mr Sams said whilst the recently released 2016 national suicide data shows a slight reduction in suicide rates, eight lives are lost to suicide in Australia every day. About 100,000 Australians experience suicide ideation each year. Lifeline Hunter and Central Coast relies on community support for more than 55 per cent of its funding. Calling young futurepreneurs Young people in the Hunter looking to start their own business have an opportunity to be supported by local business mentors who will guide them through the business startup process. The Hunter’s Federal Government appointed entrepreneurship facilitator, Cheryl Royle, is running the one-hour sessions to help young people who are unemployed or stuck on their career choice. There will be sessions held in a number of Hunter locations, the closest being Newcastle and Charlestown. Those who go on to be involved in the program will receive support from Ms Royle and other successful local business people. “Some young people are better suited to selfemployment but often don’t think that it is an option for them,” Ms Royle said. “The workshops will help you decide if you have what it takes to start your own business, explain what’s involved and show you the considerable help that is available,” she said.

“If young people have an idea, a passion or a hobby they may be able to turn that into their own business.” “The advantage of the Federal Government’s Entrepreneurship program is we go on to give people free business mentoring. “You need an idea, passion and maybe a technical skill but you also need some planning and financial management expertise to survive. “We can help people with those business skills and other soft skills such as effective communication.” Ms Royle is one of three entrepreneurship facilitators in Australia. The Federal Government established the facilitators in regions where there is high youth unemployment and low uptake of self-employment. She has extensive experience as a facilitator working with young people. She is managing director of the business capability firm, The Finer Line, and cofounder of Lone Rangers, a new support network for sole business operators. The one hour sessions run from 10.30-11.30am and will be held at Charlestown on November 23 and

CHAMBER

Chat by Nathan Errington President of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce

The business of Hamilton

Hamilton is uniquely positioned within some of the region’s best sporting precincts and in November the Chamber and its members will further explore how business and sport can work closer together. The breakfast will be held at 7.00am to 8.30am on Tuesday 14 November at Newcastle Racecourse and will feature a panel of esteemed representatives including Newcastle Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna, Newcastle Jockey Club CEO, Matt Benson and Hunter Academy of Sport CEO Brett O’Farrell. Panelists will share their expertise in sport as well as chatting about ways for local businesses to become involved with the sporting world. Tickets can be purchased by visiting Hamilton Now Facebook page or via www.hamiltonchamber.com.au In other news, Hamilton’s business community has welcomed the news that its cosmopolitan suburb will be a hub for visitors of the upcoming Supercars Newcastle 500. At a Chamber function in October, members received a briefing from Newcastle City Council about the event which is set to inject millions of dollars into the local economy. We expect that people visiting the city for the event will find Hamilton both convenient and entertaining. We understand that event volunteers and visitors will use the nearby showground as a base so we hope to attract shuttle services so that these people could access the broad range of cafes and amenities available in Hamilton. Many of our members are already planning to offer specials and booking live acts as part of their contribution to making sure that Newcastle welcomes people over the weekend. We look forward to meeting you in cosmopolitan Hamilton.

HAMILTON CHAMBER is your business… Hamilton Chamber is a not-for-profit entity overseen by an elected management committee of volunteers selected from our membership base. Full membership is open to any business owner/operator or building owner within the Special Benefit Rate zones. We have a modest staff and a group of active volunteer local business owners to manage our day to day activities. Hamilton Chamber is a business advocacy group tasked with driving the Hamilton community forward and revitalising our great suburb. We use place-making projects, public events, partnerships with business and organisations, and strategic planning to bring life into our CBD. SOME OF OUR BEST-KNOWN PROJECTS INCLUDE: ■ Free wi-fi throughout Beaumont St ■ A Taste of Beaumont including iconic restaurants and cafes ■ Some of Newcastle city’s best street festivals like Beaumont Street Carnivale & China Week Festival If you’d like to know more about what we do, we encourage business owners/operators, residents, and other interested parties to participate in our Hamilton Monthly Networking Event which allow you to work closely with the community and our organisation.

Library fine amnesty supports needy Newcastle Region Library members have a chance to clear unpaid library fines by supporting people in need across Newcastle this Christmas. Members with outstanding overdue fees can donate non-perishable food items and toiletries to have $5 deducted for each food item, and $10 for every toiletry, from their overdue fine ledger. All items collected under the Food For Five, Toiletries for 10 initiative will be donated to local emergency relief agencies OzHarvest, Street Care, Baptist Care and the Samaritans. They will package up the goods for needy families in the lead up to Christmas. “Food for Five, Toiletries For Ten is an initiative used by public libraries in Australia and across the world to support local charities and settle outstanding fees with members,” Newcastle City Council Libraries Manager Suzie Gately said. “It’s a fantastic way to remind members to return items at the end of the year. “Newcastle Region Library has used this initiative in previous years and we look forward to giving back to the Newcastle community. “There’s no limit to the amount in overdue charges

you can pay off with food, but food and toiletries donations will only be used to clear overdue charges. “Payment for lost and damaged items or other charges must be paid for with cash or EFTpos.” Food For Five, Toiletries For Ten begins on Monday 13 November and runs until Monday 11 December.

Overwhelming response to Blackbutt reptile theft Blackbutt Reserve’s popular reptile show will soon make a comeback thanks to pet owners who’ve offered to donate more than 30 animals to replace the star attractions stolen from the reserve last month. Council will enhance security before accepting any of the replacements pledged after the theft of nine lizards and six snakes over the October long weekend. New security bars will be installed on doors and windows of the after-hours reptile enclosure - located in a secluded part of the reserve - as well as sensors and CCTV. “Newcastle City Council has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the response from the public and is working hard to expedite the return of our popular wildlife shows,” Newcastle City Council Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said. “We will accept many of the generous offers from the community as well as buy additional animals to improve our collection so visitors can see a greater variety when we resume our educational shows.

The reptile shows at Blackbutt are expected to resume in the Christmas school holidays “We’re also substantially enhancing security to ensure another theft doesn’t take place. “For example, metal window mesh is being replaced with welded bars. “And if in future they somehow got through the bars, sensors will be triggered that will immediately tip off police.” Council’s Natural Areas Manager Brad West said, despite the great public response, restoring the exhibit was no simple task because only animals with the right temperament could be chosen and gradually conditioned to crowds of people. “I would like to extend a big thank you to the community on behalf of the whole Blackbutt team,” West said. “While we do appreciate the generous offers to loan out reptiles, it’s crucial we carefully select the right ones to ensure they’re a good fit for interacting with kids. “We are confident we can have reptiles with the right temperament in place for the educational shows scheduled to run during the Christmas school holidays.” Three frilled-neck lizards, two shingle back lizards, a central netted dragon, two Woma pythons and two olive pythons were among the reptiles stolen. They were the regular stars of the Blackbutt reptile shows, which are normally held at 11am on weekends and daily during the school holidays.

Mo time like now to give Greg Maloy of Q’s Books in Beaumont Street is a ten year veteran of Movember. Since 2008 he has raised over $9200 in support of men’s health. “In 2008 I was working in a bakery with a no facial hair policy but I managed to convince the owner to let me grow a Mo, but I just grew it and didn’t raise any money that year. I then decided I was letting down all the great work others were doing with Movember and have raised money ever since. One year we raised over $3000 as a bakery team.” Greg said. Since taking over at Q’s Books Greg has continued the Movember tradition. “My goal each year has been $1000 but with this being my 10th year I’m thinking I might have to lift my game a bit! Our customers have been so fantastic with their support. The biggest for me in supporting Movember is helping Beyond Blue. One in every two Australian men experiences a mental health problem at some point in their lives. 3 out of four 4 suicides in Australia are men.” Greg added. Donations to Movember can be made online or in store at Q’s Books if you prefer.

You will learn the effect this has on our nutrition, exercise regimes, biochemistry, stress levels, and ultimately the quality of health and wellness you have. In conclusion, she points out that there are some essential things all women, but more especially ‘Rushing Women’ can prioritise and learn in order to move from a state of ‘rush’ to one of ‘rest’. Humans of Hamilton Kerrie Milne The day of the Newcastle earthquake, Kerrie Milne had been to the chemist on Beaumont Street and had not long walked underneath the awning that killed the three people that lost their lives that day in Hamilton. When Kerrie told me that a little shiver went through my body and I can’t help thinking, how much that must play on one’s mind. Then she told me when the earthquake hit that morning in Hamilton at 10.28am on Thursday 28 December 1989 she was talking with one of her regulars at work in Hamilton RSL on Tudor Street (now being renovated into apartments) when they heard what they thought sounded like the petrol station from across the road being blown up. Instead the poker machines started to move, the building swayed and one of the walls started to fall towards them. Kerrie instinctively pushed him out of the way, probably saving his life in the process. It’s not surprising to find that now, Kerrie works in a caring role. The ability to connect with people for 30 years behind the bar has translated naturally into this new career and Kerrie now works for Hammond Care as a Community Care officer. Kerrie has always lived in Hamilton. She seems to know everybody, as we sit having a chat over coffee, there’s more than a few “Hi, how are you?” exchanges.

A regular feature by Ahn Wells

Kerrie Milne has lived all her life in Hamilton Of course, this makes sense when you learn Kerrie grew up walking to Hamilton Public School, then Cooks Hill Girls High and then finally Merewether High School. She remembers all the famous Hamilton delis, the silos of the once working Flour Mill, the Foundry where wrought iron gates were made, Fredrick Barry’s grandfather clocks and the famous fine dining French restaurant, Danilo’s. She even admitted to eating snails there and yes she

Page 18 > Hamilton Local > November 2017

liked them they were cooked in garlic and butter. When Kerrie was 9 years old, the Donald Street rail overpass opened and Kerrie was chosen to cut the ribbon. In an historic occasion, I imagine it would have been a very proud moment for someone so young and an experience that has stayed with her ever since. If you know a ‘Human of Hamilton’ whose story we should tell please email us at info.hamiltonlocal@ gmail.com

Hidden Hamilton

By Ruth Cotton

The mine manager’s house Status, in late–nineteenth-century Hamilton, was a house on the crest of a hill, fireplaces in every room, and your own well so you didn’t have to queue with the wives of coal miners to draw water. Three mine managers for the Australian Agricultural Company (A.A. Company) lived in this compact, well proportioned 19th century residence, now situated behind 195 Denison Street, Hamilton . The first resident of the house in 1849 was Overman James Lindsay. He was responsible for newlyopened D Pit (The Borehole), more or less opposite where Saint Peter’s Anglican Church stands today.

In August, 2017 this house achieved a special honour for Hamilton: it is now listed in the NSW State Heritage Register. This listing recognises its heritage significance to Newcastle and to the people of NSW. When no longer needed by the A.A. Company, the house was bought by company engineer Dixon Little in 1914.This began almost 140 years’ association with the Little family. In 1993, a chance discovery of the deteriorating house by postgraduate student David Campbell was a turning point for its future. David, now a local historian and heritage expert, became the driving force behind efforts to save it. A

State government grant enabled the Newcastle City Council to purchase it in 1996. Essential remedial works were done, items of heritage importance archived, and a Conservation Management Plan developed. I was able to see through the house and take photographs for my Hidden Hamilton blog in 2013. The future of the house remained uncertain. In August 2016, another turning point: it was put up for sale by Council. Purchase by a qualified buyer was approved in May 2017, with a positive covenant to implement the Conservation Management Plan. (continued on next page)

A portion of the sale proceeds are to go to interpretative plaques highlighting the history of the A.A. Company in Hamilton. Even though the house is no longer in public ownership, a private owner committed to its heritage, the proposed plaques and the recent NSW State Heritage listing secure its future as a tangible reminder of the mining origins of the suburb of Hamilton. ---------------------------------------This is an edited extract from my book Hidden Hamilton: Uncovering stories of Hamilton, NSW. MONEY

Matters by Margaret Glenn CPA of Pritchard Partners

Cash trapped by your credit card

Credit cards can certainly make our lives easy. The convenience of paying bills online and controlling cash flow between pay days are just a few of the perks. But, as with all types of loans, there are plenty of traps that can prove costly. Here are some tips about how to stay in front of your credit card. The first step is to assess income, job security and your ability to budget. If all of these are in check then you should feel comfortable about applying for

a credit card. If you are a little hesitant about budget then give yourself a test run. Do a realistic budget and live on it for a while. This will allow you to practise discipline and enable you to spend within an allocated amount. It will also allow you to budget sufficient monthly payments once you have a credit card. If this works, then apply. Make sure you understand the card’s interest rates, penalties for late payments, grace periods and fine print. Choose a credit card limit that is realistic and within your financial means and always read the fine print for details around multiple billing cycles or offers that you did not sign up for. One of the most common traps is the concept of minimal payments. If you pay the minimal amount you are really just paying the interest on your spending which means that paying off the balance will take much longer than anticipated. If you use your credit card for emergencies or only big purchases then it is wise to compare as some banks charge you inactive charges for not using the card enough. Margaret Glenn is a Certified Practicing Accountant and director of Rees Pritchard Pty Limited.

Meet a gallery director

Nadia Aurisch from Acrux Art Gallery, Tudor Street Hamilton When did you open/start your gallery? We had our first opening in September last year! (2016) Have you always wanted to run your own gallery? Yes and no… I think I just kind of ended up going down this path, I really enjoyed exhibiting and curating and thought why not make my own space in which to do so! I also love supporting local artists and giving them another space in which to exhibit their works. What kind of exhibitions does your gallery show? Acrux exhibits a bit of everything. I suppose I would categorise it as contemporary local works, but we have really had anything from solo shows to huge group shows. How do artists apply to exhibit in your gallery? Just get in contact with me via email hello@ acruxartgallery.com Let me know if you are interested in being a part of a group show, solo or even if you have your own idea for a curated show and I can send you out an info pack with costs etc What is your advice to someone interested in opening a gallery? Have at least 6 months of exhibitions ready to go and a good supportive pool of artists to rely on! I had the latter rather than the former and they are the reason I kept my sanity. Visit Acrux Art Gallery during November to see the group exhibition CONDITIONAL by local artists Caelli-Jo Brooker, Alison Smith and Ahn Wells in the main gallery and in the pop-up space, COVER by Lisa Kirkpatrick. Follow @independentgalleriesnewcastle for monthly exhibition information.

SPINE

Matters by David Diehm

of Family Life Chiropractic

Are your headaches a pain in the neck? Nearly all of us will experience a headache at some point in our lifetime. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 15 percent of the population are taking medication for headaches. Headaches can be very frustrating and impose a significant burden on quality of life. In my experience many headache suffers haven’t explored the possibility of their symptoms being caused by problems with their neck joints. Research has shown that about 20 percent of headaches are

cervicogenic, or neck-related. This type of headache will likely be responsive to improved neck movement. Traumatic events like whiplash from a car accident or repetitive, prolonged activities create microtrauma and damage to the neck joints. This damage will lead to inflammation and irritation of the surrounding nerve structures. Sitting for long periods, slouching, poor posture, working at a computer, using a hand-held device, sleeping on your tummy are all activities which may affect the correct function of your upper neck joints. What is frustrating for people to understand is that they “haven’t done” anything to injure these joints. Most people are of the belief that a major traumatic injury is required to damage these joints, unfortunately this is not the case. As a chiropractor our focus is on the correct function of the spine and nervous system. Improving spine alignment and joint function will help lighten the load on your nervous system which supports the body’s ability to heal itself naturally. If you suffer from headaches and want to ask any specific questions, we are happy to share our knowledge and expertise, just drop us a line.

No-one plans to be involved in a fatal accident or to lose capacity to make a will suddenly but sometimes this happens. If you pass away without having made a will the law requires that your assets be divided according to certain rules. These rules can result in consequences you would never have wished. For example: If you are married or have a partner and you have children from an earlier relationship, your spouse or de facto is entitled to the first $350,000 (CPI adjusted) of your estate and half the rest (or residue). All your children will share equally in the other half of the remainder (or residue) of your estate even though you might never have wanted this. If you are married or have a partner and your only children are from this relationship, all your estate passes to your spouse or partner even if you would have wanted your children to have some part of it. If you have entered into a de facto relationship for less than two years and are still married, your estranged spouse takes the whole of your estate. If you have been in a de facto relationship for more than two years and are still married, your partner and estranged spouse each take half your estate. If you have no partner or children and your parents have passed, your estate is shared between siblings and step-siblings or their children. If you have no siblings, then between your aunts and uncles or if none, to the NSW Government. There are many more possible scenarios and possible undesired consequences. Also without a will the Court might appoint an administrator who you do not trust to administer your estate for a substantial fee. Be in control of what happens to your hard-earned assets and make a will!

Food Safety Week

Food Safety Week is 11-18 November. The theme this year is ‘is it done yet?’. It is estimated that each year 4.1 million people get food poisoning in Australia, 1 million Australians have to visit a doctor due to food poisoning, 32,000 people end up in hospital, and 86 people die. The term ‘food poisoning’ refers to the illnesses that are caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or drink. Symptoms of food poisoning can range from mild to very severe, and can include one or more of the following symptoms: nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and headaches. Symptoms can take between a few hours to a few days to appear, and may last for a few days, depending on the cause. What can we do to reduce our risk of becoming sick with

food poisoning? The Food Safety Information Council provides the following basic recommendations: •Clean: having clean hands will greatly decrease the chance of food poisoning and other diseases occurring. Wash hands with warm soapy water for 20 seconds, dry hands for 20 seconds before starting to cook, and repeat frequently, especially after handling raw meats, or vegetables with visible soil. •Chill: foods that should be chilled (e.g. meat, poultry, dairy foods, vegetables, salad ingredients) should be refrigerated at or below 5°C as soon as possible after purchase. Frozen foods should be defrosted in the fridge. •Cook: cooking food properly minimises the risk of food poisoning. Serve hot food steaming hot above 60°C, and always follow cooking instructions on packaged foods. •Separate: cross-contamination is a major way for food borne diseases to spread. Raw and cooked foods should be kept separate when storing and preparing to avoid cross-contamination. Food poisoning is often a nasty experience. Piggott’s Pharmacy can provide advice on the most appropriate treatment for your individual situation. Some people including children younger than 5, pregnant women, people more than 70 years of age and those with compromised immune systems or acute or chronic illness may be more vulnerable to, or affected more by the symptoms of food poisoning.
