IGA works move ahead The much anticipated extensions and refurbishment to Ritchies IGA New Lambton have begun. The project has an anticipated completion date of October 2018. The initial stage includes the installation of a new loading dock setup in the northern face of the existing supermarket and associated carpark and driveway works. This work has necessitated the closure of the driveway entry off Russell Road for a period of time Access to the carpark is still available from Victoria Street. On Monday 15 January the IGA carpark will close entirely until the completion of the project later in the year. The supermarket will continue to trade until the new extension structure is built. To speed up construction time, the supermarket will close (continued page 2)

Christmas spirit catching on bus
The interior of ‘The Christmas Bus’. The team of Newcastle Buses drivers involved look forward to bringing Christmas cheer to young and old again this year
When Newcastle Buses driver Margaret Pannell decorated her bus with a few bits of tinsel and played a cassette of Christmas carols during her work day back in 1997 she was just trying to bring some festive spirit to her passengers. Since then the Christmas Bus has delighted many thousands of passengers and raised much needed donations for local charity. The Christmas Bus idea has grown to become an annual institution, much loved by young and old. Many local families make a point of finding out when the Christmas Bus will be running on their local route and make an outing of it. Other, unsuspecting passengers, can’t help but smile when a bus fully decorated inside and out swings around the corner and takes them on their journey. The Christmas Bus will again run on a number of regular routes in and around the Lambton and New Lambton area until Christmas Day. To see the full timetable of when the Christmas Bus will be at a bus stop near you go to www.thechristmasbus. com.au or like The Christmas Bus (Newcastle Buses) page on Facebook.

On Sunday December 17, Lambton Park will turn into a Christmas spectacular once again as thousands of locals come together for “Christmas Carols in Lambton Park”. An army of volunteers from Hunter Bible Church are putting on the event, which includes a fireworks display at the end of the night. Over the past few years Carols in Lambton Park has grown enormously, with over 6000 people attending last year. A host of stalls and activities are organised to kick-off from 5pm, with jumping castles, facepainting and a fire engine. There will be a variety of food vendors set up as well as some local arts and crafts stalls. There’s no entry fee for the event, instead Hunter Bible Church puts on the night for the local community to come and enjoy together at no cost. Pastor Pete Witt, who will be hosting the night says, “We’re just really excited to serve the community in this way. It’s a special time of year to gather with family and friends, and we think Jesus is worth making a big deal of. The band and performers look forward to it, and we really hope everyone who comes has a great night.” To find out more and to download the carols booklet visit lambtoncarols.com.au

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes at the launch of the new park and ride service The new park and ride shuttle service from New Lambton to the city and return has proven to be very popular since its inception in early November. Newcastle Council initiated the scheme to alleviate some of the traffic and parking congestion in the CBD. Buses run on weekdays from McDonald Jones Stadium every 15 minutes from 7am to 9am, with stops designed to deliver you within a few minutes walk of anywhere in the CBD. The return trip from the CBD to the stadium runs every 15 minutes from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Stops include Marketown, Civic Park, Hunter Street Mall (near Perkins St), Customs House and Honeysuckle Drive (near Hunter Water). The Honeysuckle Drive stop is inbound on mornings only. The service is free until 25 January 2018 after which date a small fare will be charged. To register for the park and ride service go to newcastle.nsw.gov.au/parkandride or call Newcastle City Council on 4974 2000. You will be issued with a park and ride voucher to display on your dashboard.

High Notes Mr Rosser’s farewell message to the school community I would like to inform the school community that I was successful in my application for the role Director, Educational Leadership, and will officially commence in Term 2 2018. I will continue to relieve in the Director position until this time, and Mr Riley will relieve as Principal of Lambton High School I have been fortunate to work with a highly motivated executive, teaching and office staff who have been the backbone in our transformational change in quality teaching and learning systems. In recent years, the Quality Teaching Rounds, AITSL Walk-throughs and Innovation Projects have opened up the classroom, and we frequently share our professional practice within faculties and across the school. This researched, 21st century teaching and learning approach has supported the Lambton Learning Ladder and inquiry-based learning strategies. I believe the school is heading in the right direction, and I would like to thank the staff for being so open to change. Schools are complex places with increased reporting accountabilities and expectations. Teaching and learning is our core business and it has remained at the forefront of all of my actions and decisions. We have been able to cater well for the individual learning needs of students, and have provided students the opportunity to excel in their areas of strength through the introduction of acceleration courses.
individualised, personal, dedicated and committed approach of our teaching staff has fostered this achievement. Committing and self-managing over 1 million dollars in building works and physical learning environment improvements. These include the refurbishment of classrooms and access to technology in all rooms; MPC audio-visual, sound and lighting upgrades; installation of the CAPA Studio and STEAM laboratory; establishment of a senior study; half-court basketball surfaces and grounds improvements. In leading the school, I have always placed an emphasis on students achieving their personal best and ensured support for a holistic educational experience, giving them an opportunity to participate in academic learning, creative and performing arts, sport, cultural, environmental and leadership programs. I am sure Lambton High will continue to be a success in the future.

Pride in Plastic Police Pride Dry Cleaning is the first business to partner with a new pilot environment program that diverts soft plastics from landfill to be recycled into useful products for schools, councils, businesses and community groups. The Islington-based business is participating in the Plastic Police program, an initiative set up by local business waste consultant Samantha Cross from Cross Connections Consulting. Pride’s is now a community collection point for scrunchable plastic which cannot be recycled in yellow recycling bins, including plastic dry-cleaning covers. Pride’s owner, Jennie Lyons, is urging other businesses to join with Plastic Police. She says she has been looking for something like this for several years. “As part of our goal to be an ecofriendly dry cleaner, we already recycle water and other materials, as well as reducing our energy and chemical use,” Mrs Lyons says. “Until we can find a better way of protecting cleaned garments I have been looking for ways to deal with the impact of the plastic covers our industry uses,” she says. “If our small business is recycling a bale a fortnight, imagine how much plastic from other dry
Samantha Cross of Cross Connections Consulting and Jennie Lyons of Pride Dry Cleaning with a bale of recyclable scrunchable plastic cleaners and other businesses is going to landfill.” Ms Cross says Plastic Police is a more than just a recycling program. It is a community engagement program to close the loop on wasted resources. She wants to engage schools, businesses and councils, as part of a regional pilot program to demonstrate the Hunter has been able to tackle this plastic waste issue. The pilot will explore, trial and develop local end markets for products that can be made from collected materials. “Our aim is to turn as much of this material back into useful products, to avoid material ending up in landfills or being shipped overseas to be recycled,” Mrs Cross says.

“We want to get communities, including businesses and Councils, playing a role in purchasing or incorporating products made from reprocessed and recycled materials to ensure local end demand.” Mrs Lyons wants to help reduce the impact of plastic beyond her business. “We are happy to accept dry cleaning plastic and any other clean scrunchable soft plastics from anyone, not just our customers, at our Maitland Road Islington store.” To find out more about Plastic Police visit www. crossconnections.com.au/plasticpolice-partnerships/

In Minmi in 1864, after a period of torrential rain, a fissure opened beside Back Creek. The contents of the creek poured in, and the colliery below flooded. All the miners managed to escape, but the pit was closed for months afterwards. Forced to look elsewhere for employment, a group of Welsh miners moved from Minmi to work the newly opened colliery in Lambton. The men belonged to the Welsh Congregational Church, under the leadership of Rev Evan Lewis. They soon erected a simple wood slab church on De Vitre St. The uncertainty of mining meant that most buildings in Lambton at that time were of a similar primitive and temporary character.
In 1868 however, the Welsh miners expressed a confidence in Lambton below, to match their assurance in God above. They decided that a new building, worthy of its great purpose, should be built of stone. They were granted permission to use a quarry on Newcastle Rd nearby, and the men bound themselves “one to another” in an oath, that they would erect a new building in Dickson St, by their own hands, free of charge. At the 50th anniversary celebrations in 1918 it was remembered that “Some of the men quarried the stone, others wheeled it to the site, and many, after their shift ended at the pit for the day, put in several hours in building the edifice. One of the workers was Mr. J. Parry, who, though then a

coalminer, had originally been a stonemason.” Above the front porch, an engraving in Welsh reads “Bethel capel annibynol adeiladwyd, A.D. 1868” which translates to “Bethel Independent Chapel, built A.D. 1868” The building ceased to be used as a place of worship in 1977, when the Congregationalists merged with the Uniting Church. Next year will be the 150th anniversary of the stone building, which stands today as an enduring legacy of the faith of those Welsh miners, even in troubled times past. Matters with Lisa Macklin of Dalton Partners Real Estate, New Lambton
Make the most of this Christmas season Can you believe that historically, the summer “silly” season is the time that both Real Estate.com and Domain.com receive the most amount of hits for property searches? Our data and experience has shown the next few months are generally the busiest time of year for the real estate professional. From November through to January there is often
a rush by home buyers and renters wanting to get accommodation organised for a fresh start in the following calendar year due to changes in schooling, family or business matters. This may mean finalising a purchase, putting a property up for sale or going to open homes in the hunt for the perfect place to lease. Our records show a peak in enquiries over this period from people relocating to our region, and these people are eager for information and the need to know “what’s coming up” in terms of new rentals and homes entering the marketplace. This said, now is the ideal time to get ahead of the game and raise your awareness around what your home is currently worth by booking a property appraisal and listing your home in anticipation of the 2018 rush. At Daltons New Lambton, we have prepared simple strategies that will enable you to take full advantage of the Christmas break, help you get all those odd jobs completed and have your home ready to hit the property market in the New Year. In return, you will be rewarded by selling or renting your home at a premium time and achieving maximum results.

Merry Christmas Lisa & Stephanie here to help in the holiday period Thinking of selling in the New Year? Why wait? Statistics show that real estate advertising sites report the highest amount of views per property over the Christmas break. Though this is a busy time of year, when regular work and school commitments slow down, motivated buyers search the market and request viewing of available properties. So, while everyone else is waiting for the New Year you can be taking advantage of the increase in traffic and beat the rush of properties hitting the market after Australia Day by registering your property with us now. Lisa and Stephanie are dedicated to helping their clients achieve their real estate goals for 2018 by working with you through the upcoming holiday period. If you want the first move advantage for 2018, contact Lisa or Stephanie to discuss the right strategy for your home.

LAW
Matters by Ronnie Wall of Wall Legal, New Lambton
Buying or selling property at auction In the current fast paced property market, many people wishing to sell their property are opting to sell by Auction. The advantage of this is that you have all potential buyers together to bid against each other. This may have a positive impact on the sale price. The seller will set a minimum price that they will accept. This is referred to as the reserve price. Once the hammer falls, the highest bidder will be the successful buyer and must sign a Contract and pay a deposit on the spot. The successful buyer will not have a cooling-
off period and therefore, it is imperative that purchasers looking to buy a property at Auction do their homework beforehand. If the bids do not meet the seller’s reserve price, the property may be passed in, or withdrawn from auction. The highest bidder then gets first right to negotiate with the seller. If you are looking to buy a property at Auction it is always a good idea to do your research. Once you have decided on the type of property you want, look at similar properties in the area to gauge recent sale prices. Usually the Real Estate Agent will have a pest and building inspection available for you to view, and a strata records inspection if the property is Strata Title. It is also important that you have the Contract reviewed by a Solicitor or Conveyancer prior to the Auction to make sure there are no hidden pitfalls. Your finance must be fully approved (not merely pre-approved) and your lender should confirm the maximum amount you can borrow. You must know exactly what your maximum purchase price is, and don’t be swayed by emotion during the Auction to go beyond your maximum. You have to be certain before the Auction that the property is what you really want and can afford, because you won’t have any opportunity to change your mind once the hammer falls…

WELLBEING
Matters by Lee Clements of Sensom Health & Wellbeing
Pain - it’s a pain
Pain can be a source of mental and physical anguish for some people, and the perception of it can differ from individual to individual. How we manage it can be the making or breaking of us. Pain can manifest in many forms. For example it can be the ‘physical’ pain of injuries, illness, or the ‘mental’ pain of loss. It can be short term (acute) and long term (chronic). It can be visible on the ‘outside’, and invisible on the ‘inside’, and because we are often adept at hiding it, not always seen by others. People may imagine your physical ‘pain’ if you have broken your leg, identify with your anguish of being ‘injured’ but be unaware of the mental torment you may be experiencing. It is when pain is internalized that it can be become problematic for many people.
The frustration of not being heard, acknowledged, your ‘internal’ pain not being recognized, or the insensitive ‘it’s all in your head’ can bring feelings of sadness and depression. If you are in pain now, how are you managing it? Perhaps you are under the care of your GP, Psychologist, Chiropractor, Physiotherapist, Massage therapist, Acupuncturist or other allied health professional. Perhaps a combination of helpers and support people? It’s important that you do find the right support when pain is in your life. I see many people in my health and wellbeing studio who are in pain, both physically and psychologically, but who have made a decision to manage it. Some come in to try Yoga for the first time because they have heard it will help them. Some join a meditation course to seek the support they need. Others are finding that the sensory isolation therapy afforded to them by floating in our pods is incredibly helpful in providing ‘release’. The important thing is that they have recognized that pain needn’t be a permanent state. By reaching that understanding they have started the journey to reduce and manage pain in their lives. On behalf of the Sensom team, we wish all readers of The Local a very happy Christmas and may the new year bring you joy and peace.

MIND
Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
A big year draws to a close
many, though not all, to want to get married and have society’s affirmation and congratulations. Over 75% of Australians get married in civil ceremonies, so extending the privilege to same sex couples is a lovely and very humane thing to do. After all, almost everyone knows someone who is gay; a sister or brother, an uncle or aunt, a friend, a work colleague, and we know such people are not second-class citizens. But on a sad note, because the survey evaluated the lives of LGBTIQ Australians, we know it certainly took a toll on their community. We wish the LGBTIQ community a special time of peace and happiness over Christmas. The other big issue that ends the year is the pitiful plight of refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island. No matter your politics, we cannot help but be moved by the dismal prospect of genuine refugees fleeing persecution and then being locked up for years. The Australian Psychological Society has stated that the injury to the mental health of refugees is significant and may be long-lasting in many. I hope Australia can move through this period of detention centres and never visit it again.
We end the year on a note of jubilation and of sadness. After a long campaign that first started in 2004, the LGBTIQ community has finally won the prize of having the rights of marriage extended to them in civil ceremonies. Over two thirds of Australians supported them in the recent survey, with 133 out of 150 electorates reporting majority support. This is a joyous occasion for couples, their loved ones, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. A safe Stuart Edser families and friends. When you love someone in time with my best wishes a committed lifelong relationship, it is natural for

Hot flushes
Perimenopausal and menopausal hot flushes and night sweats are issues we frequently treat at Poke Acupuncture. With estimates suggesting that 30 - 50% of perimenopausal women suffer from hot flushes it is no surprise that many are now seeking acupuncture and Chinese herbal Medicine treatment for their symptoms. Hot flushes occur when blood vessels in the skin of the neck and head dilate larger than normal, allowing more blood to transition to these areas. This phenomenon creates a sudden feeling of heat, visible redness and blotching that is most intense in the head, neck and chest. Hot flushes can come on quickly and can last from 1 5 minutes. They can range in severity from a sense of warmth to a feeling of being consumed by fire from the inside out. Their frequency can vary widely, with some women experiencing just a few over the span of a week, with others experiencing 10 or more during the day, plus more at night. Hot flushes are not the only thing these women are dealing with. Clinically a number of perimenopausal women often report experiencing additional symptoms of moodiness, night sweats, sleep disturbance and difficulty concentrating. The exact medical cause of hot flushes is not completely understood, but it is commonly understood to be associated with fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone. Other hormonal fluctuations may also play a role in causing hot flushes. High levels of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), surges of LH (luteinizing hormone), increases in cortisol and stress hormones have all been linked to hot flushes. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal Medicine have been used for thousands of years in the East and now more recently in the West as a clinically proven form of hot flushes treatment and hormone regulation. Will you be financially prepared this Christmas?
a certain amount, or to do Secret Santa, in order to keep costs down. 4. Credit card spending. From now until Christmas, make additional weekly payments onto your credit card so you’re not caught out, as many people are, with an unmanageable credit card debt once you roll into January. 5. New year goal. Figure out what you wish for in the New Year and start taking steps towards that goal right now. Whether it is a fitness goal, a new skill, a bucket list item or something as simple as a reunion with an old friend, make sure at least a small part of the Christmas period is about you by planning for and achieving something special. With Christmas just around the corner, here are five tips to help plan ahead and avoid a financial hangover on New Year’s Day. Think back to last Christmas and consider where the extra expenses came from. Was it petrol for the drive to the holiday destination? Gifts for new children in the extended family? Wine for the constant gatherings? And don’t forget the taxi fares for the journeys home from nights out. 1. Figure out a budget. What exactly are you going to spend on gifts, food, drink, accommodation, airfares, fuel, cabs etc.? Be realistic and even pessimistic. If you over-prepare then you’ll end up with a surplus, which is a great result. 2. Christmas saver. Consider opening a new account which you can put a weekly amount into over the next few months in order to cover most, if not all, of your Christmas expenses. Even better, if you have a mortgage account, consider putting the extra money into the redraw section – that way you could save some mortgage interest during the final quarter of the year. 3. Gifts. Figure out what you are happy to spend on each person and ensure you stick to it. Give yourself time to think about gifts, working out exactly what each person will receive, to keep your shopping trips short and avoid extra purchases. And negotiate with family members to stick below

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
The Christmas puppy Merry Christmas! I wonder how many families are considering a Christmas puppy this year? In many ways school holidays are a great time to start a puppy up, with family at home on a break and children needing diversion….but remember, like anything else, a little bit of planning goes a long way! First, consider the breed. It’s hard not to want that same dog that your family always had when you were
a kid, but consider – if you are a runner, no matter how much you admire Aussie bull dogs they will only slow you down. If you have (or are planning) small children, loyal as they are, working dogs are likely to get bored and frustrated with a life structured around sleep times and play group! Have a look at Dogzonline, go down to Hillsborough on a Sunday morning and chat to a few of the dog owners there, but above all become informed and thoughtful about this important decision. Next, prepare for your pup. Where will he sleep? What will he eat? How will you cater for him when you are all out? Are there any areas (or all) of the house where he will not be allowed to go? Discuss and decide now so that all of the family are on the same page and a consistent message is delivered to the pup as soon as he arrives. Finally, commit to training from day one. At New Lambton Vets we consider Puppy Pre-school a nonnegotiable, as it is the first step in owning a relaxed socialised pup, it is a forum to ask all those niggly questions (eg is this normal puppy behaviour or is my pup a total lunatic??!!), and it provides cutting edge information about leadership, canine body language, environmental enrichment and much more. Best of all for us, we get a chance to meet and get to know your pup!

HEALTH Matters with Sara Knight of The Gut Clinic
Staying healthy in the holidays
With the holidays fast approaching, we can allow our thoughts to turn from work and deadlines to socialising, food and drinks, and hopefully relaxation. This time of year can also be a time of unhealthy eating, high stress and limited exercise. All of which can wreak havoc on our gut and mind if we’re not careful. Here are a few tips to make the most of the holiday season while maintaining a balance between temptation and healthy practices. 1) Stay hydrated. And not the wine variety of hydration. Aim for at least 2 litres of water daily plus extra when drinking alcohol (say, one glass of water for every glass of alcohol), when out in the sun and exercising. 2) Eat in moderation. Be mindful of what and how much you are eating. Canapes and buffets can be hard to resist so enjoy them. But do so slowly and in small portions and stop when you are full. Keep to your healthy eating practices as much as possible. Don’t slide just because it’s Christmas. 3) Quality sleep. If you consistently wake feeling tired, you’re most likely not getting enough quality sleep. The average is 8 hours each night, although this differs for each person. A good routine before bed can help you get a restful and restorative night’s sleep. 4) Keep to your routine. Stick to your exercise and relaxation routines as much as possible. Your body needs this self-care, especially during the busy holiday season. Although our mindset is to enjoy the holidays (i.e. splurge) and get back on track in the new year, some planning, self-control and self-care can mean a more balanced and healthy holiday season. And less work, and for many, pain and discomfort, in the new year. From my family to yours, may your Christmas and New Year’s be full of peace, love and well deserved health.

TRAVEL Matters by Ian and Sue Roberts of Memorable Destination www.memorabledestination.com
The question of sustainable tourism
A debate over the sustainability of mass tourism is continuing in parts of Europe. It may be unpopular to some, but there’s concern that the welcome money and jobs brought by tourism might eventually be at risk unless issues such as overcrowding are managed now. Politics aside, there is an argument being mounted that the mixing of traditional cultures and environments with today’s massive cruise ships and tourist coaches needs to be handled carefully. Recently, we were fortunate enough to spend time in a traditional Lattari Mountain village in southern Italy, where the culture and environment appeared to have changed little for a long time. However, a short distance away, on the Amalfi Coast, we saw a big cruise ship sitting off Atrani; an almost never-ending line of coaches crawling along the narrow coast road; and crowds of people bustling in the restaurants of Amalfi. At Ravello, the picturesque Piazza Vescovado seemed to have been largely converted into a reception area and photographic backdrop for international weddings. And, anyone who has been to the Greek island of Santorini, the Italian isle of Capri, or even particularly fragile Venice will attest to the scale of cruise ship movements in these areas. No one appears to be denying that Europe’s economies need the income and employment provided by this type of tourism. That’s a given. The question seems to be whether this income can be sustained without action to protect the very culture, environment and attractions that draw people in the first place. PHARMACY
Matters by Brett Plumb Pharmacist at Piggott’s Pharmacy Lambton
What’s Shingles?
Shingles is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox (varicella-zoster virus). Shingles can only develop in a person who has already had chickenpox (varicella). After an episode of chickenpox, the virus does not completely clear, and some particles lie dormant in nerve roots near the spinal cord. They cause no harm, or signs and symptoms, but can re-activate later to cause shingles (herpes zoster). The majority of the Australian population is at risk of developing shingles, as over 97% of Australian adults over 30 years of age are exposed to the chickenpox virus. Approximately 150,000 new cases of shingles occur every year in the general population in Australia. It is estimated that by the age of 85 years, about half of people will develop shingles. Shingles may occur at any age, but is more common in people over 50 years of age. Fortunately most people only have shingles once. If the varicella-zoster virus reactivates, it travels along the nerve to the skin to cause shingles. Symptoms are commonly pain and a rash. The pain is localised, and can range from mild to severe. The pain may be a constant dull, burning or gnawing pain, or sharp and stabbing pain that comes and goes. The rash typically appears two to three days after the pain begins. The shingles rash can look like chickenpox, but only appears on the area of skin supplied by the affected nerve. New blisters may appear for up to a week and the soft tissues under and around the rash may become swollen due to inflammation caused by the virus. Some people, most often children, have no pain, whereas other people occasionally have pain with no rash. Shingles generally affects only one nerve, on one side of the body. Shingles can also cause a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, in which the affected area of skin
stays painful after the shingles rash has cleared. This problem is uncommon in people under 50 years of age, but the risk increases with age. Shingles can also cause other problems, e.g. shingles of the eye has the potential to damage eyesight. Treatments for shingles include anti-viral medicines, pain-relieving medicines (analgesics) and soothing creams, gels and dressings. Antiviral medicines (e.g. famciclovir, valaciclovir, aciclovir) stop the virus from replicating. Early treatment with antiviral medicines can speed healing, as well as reduce pain and other complications. Antiviral medicines must be prescribed by a doctor, and can only be subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for treatment of patients with herpes zoster within 72 hours of the onset of the rash. Pain-relieving medicines such as non-prescription simple analgesics (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen) may help to relieve the pain, and you can buy them from a pharmacy. Stronger analgesics (e.g. opioids and medicines for nerve pain) must be prescribed by a doctor. These prescription-only medicines may be required to relieve shingles pain and post-herpetic neuralgia. Vaccine protection is also available. Brett Plumb
