Bronze roos return

When the War Memorial Gates at Lambton Park were dedicated to the sacrifice of the young men from the local district who fought in the First World War there were two bronze kangaroos on top of the main pillars. Thanks to the work of one local councillor and the NSW Goverment’s Community Development Fund the kangaroos have been returned to their rightful home (well, not the original roos, they hopped off years ago) FULL STORY INSIDE Photographer unknown

pride of place at Great War gates Two bronze kangaroos, each weighing 60 kilograms, have been restored to their former glory atop the Lambton Park war memorial gates. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC said the restoration project received $19,000 as part of the NSW Government’s Community Development Fund. “This funding has restored a very important monument that perpetuates the memory of the men of the district who fought in the First World War “ Mr MacDonald said. “The two bronze kangaroos sat on the original war memorial that was constructed and dedicated back in 1918. One story goes that they were later removed and melted down for the 1939-1945

war effort. Another, perhaps more likely story, is that they were ‘souvenired’ by enterprising locals. The restoration project involved the design and sculpting of an initial model of the kangaroos, then moulding and installation of the two replacement monuments by Eddie Wentorf of Wentorf Bronze Art Factory. Mr MacDonald, who was on hand when the kangaroos were installed by the sculptor and a Newcastle Council work crew, said he was pleased to see the kangaroos take pride of place at Lambton Park in time for ANZAC Day. “I encourage the local community and visitors to the region to take time to view the restored gates and reflect upon the remarkable efforts of those who have served

our country during times of war.” The project was driven by local resident and Newcastle Ward 3 Councillor Andrea Rufo who told Lambton & New Lambton Local about his motivation for seeking the funding. “I see it as important, even after all the time that has passed that we honour the locals who served.” “It means young people will be inquisitive and can hear the stories of the sacrifices made in the past and get a better understanding of why these gates are here, and what it means.” Clr Rufo added. A special dedication ceremony for the new kangaroos was held during the service held at the memorial gates by the Lambton– New Lambton RSL Sub Branch on ANZAC Day.

Have you noticed this noticeboard?

Clint Elder of Lambton Fruit Market (2nd from right) with Allan Evans, Warwick Alexander and Louise Evans of Lambton Residents Group

Lambton Residents Group’s lastest project is a community noticeboard fixed to the exterior wall of Lambton Fruit Market in Elder Street. “The idea behind the noticeboard is to give the community somewhere central where they can post small notices and advertisements.” said Louise Evans who coordinated the project on behalf of the Residents Group. “It could be an item for sale, a garage sale, a hobby or interest groups, or a social activity or event in our local area. All you need to do is fill out a notice card available from Lambton Fruit Market and leave it in the box provided. “Residents Group members will regularly check the box and post new notices on the locked noticeboard and ensure notices are kept up to date. Clint Elder from Lambton Fruit Market was more than happy to work with the Residents Group to make the noticeboard a reality. “Being relatively new to Elder Street this is great way for me to help building the sense of community we already have” Clint said.

Newcastle’s Hunter Street : the first hundred years has just been published by Lambton resident Julie Keating and documents some of the early buildings and happenings in Hunter Street. The book is the fourth in the series documenting Newcastle’s history in the nineteenth century. The other books trace the development of Lambton, Waratah & Mayfield and Merewether & The Junction. Photos, mainly from the Ralph Snowball Collections held by the Newcastle Region Library and the University of Newcastle, and newspaper articles of the day are used to illustrate life in the 1800s. That was then, this is now

Lambton Courthouse A great rivalry existed between the burgeoning colliery townships of the Newcastle area in the late 19th century. The prestige of a town was often expressed in the erection of grand public buildings such as town halls and post offices. When word got around in 1871 that Waratah was petitioning the State government for a courthouse, Lambton was quick to respond in a series of public meetings to lay claim as the rightful location. At one meeting “Dr. Hill rose and said that he did not think there could be any doubt or difference of opinion as to Lambton being the true centre of the mining district, and therefore the proper and legitimate position for a Court-house.” The Government surveyor William Verge agreed, and in 1873 measured out a site in Dickson Street. Tenders for construction were issued and on 19th February 1877 the foundation stone of the courthouse was laid. However, before construction was even completed, the suitability of the building was called into

by Lachlan Wetherall

question, and the plans were altered to enlarge the building. The new courthouse was formally opened on 7th January 1879, despite there being “many things yet required to make the premises complete.” The building continued to be problematic - an 1889 article reported on the “disgraceful state of the courthouse” because of damp and white ants. Over the years, the limitations of the courthouse resulted in less frequent court sittings “and as people cannot afford to wait so long to have their troubles dealt with, they prefer to go to Newcastle.” The Department of Justice vacated the building in 1922, and handed it over to the Department of Education to use as woodwork and metalwork classrooms to ease congestion at Lambton Public School. After 1930, the building was used for a variety of other purposes. With continued deterioration, it was eventually demolished in 1937, and the land subdivided and sold for home sites a few years later. MONEY

Matters by Chris Stevens CPA Partner at GC Accountants, Lambton

Is an SMSF right for you?

If you’re thinking of setting up a self-managed super fund (SMSF), there are lots of things you need to consider first. That’s why it’s important to understand exactly what’s involved so you can decide whether an SMSF is the best option for your super. Like other superannuation funds, an SMSF is a vehicle specifically designed to help you save for your retirement. But unlike other funds, you’re the one making the investment decisions rather than having someone

else take care of it for you. While this puts you firmly in control of your money, it also takes time and specialised knowledge. Pros and cons First up, to run an SMSF effectively you need to be a savvy investor. Since it’s a long-term commitment, you also have to be willing to manage and administer your fund for years to come. And that means taking on the responsibility to ensure your SMSF stays compliant – or else running the risk of paying penalties. On the plus side, an SMSF can really open up your investment options, with the ability to invest directly in assets like property. You can also buy or sell assets relatively quickly and potentially save on administration fees if your SMSF has a high balance. Depending on your situation, an SMSF may even offer tax advantages. Get the right advice Everyone’s financial circumstances and retirement goals are unique, which means an SMSF might be a better solution for some people than for others. We can talk you through your options and help you choose the right super strategy for your needs.

Diabetes

Approximately 3.6 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes while worldwide 366 million people are affected. National Diabetes Week runs annually and we are all encouraged to have checks and learn more about this disease. There are various types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin. This type represents 10-15

per cent of all cases of diabetes and is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in developed nations. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors, yet its incidence is increasing at a rate of about 3 per cent a year. In type 2 diabetes, which accounts for about 85% of all people with diabetes, insulin is still produced but does not work effectively. While it most often affects mature adults, more young people, even children, are getting type 2 diabetes. It’s very much a lifestyle disease and linked to the overall increase in weight among the population. Less well known is gestational diabetes - a form of diabetes that occurs in pregnancy and mostly disappears after the birth. This type may be caused by the woman’s body not being able to make enough insulin or not being able to use it correctly during pregnancy. It is usually found by having a blood test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. You can get more advice on diabetes from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s (PSA) Self Care health information or Ask Piggotts!

MIND

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser

Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health

Anxiety-Overthinking Anxiety is not just a bad feeling. It actually has three components: thoughts, emotions and physical sensations. When someone is feeling very anxious, there is always a combination of these three aspects interacting with one another and increasing the severity of the discomfort. It can be very distressing and can lead to some pretty wild thinking. In this series of discussions, I will focus on the ‘thinking symptoms’ and in this issue, on ‘overthinking’. Overthinking is one of the most common cognitive symptoms of anxiety. It is rare for me to see someone

with an anxiety problem who does not get caught up in overthinking. It becomes an automatic negative thought that takes over and via a process called ’chaining’ or ‘spiralling’, one catastrophic thought leads to another. Overthinking is where we take a particular issue, perhaps a problem, or a decision, even an event, person or location, and look at it from too many perspectives. We examine the issue in fine detail looking at all the ins and outs, the pros and cons, the advantages and disadvantages, the whyfors and what-have- yous, and generally focus on the negative stuff. This creates fresh new problems that are themselves anxiety generating. These get stuck in loops in our brain and become difficult to break. What is really at the base of this overthinking is the fear of making the wrong call. Sometimes we think there is only one correct pathway and if I miss it, I will destroy the situation and disaster will ensue. But rarely is there only ever one plausible pathway. And looking at something from too many points of view can sometimes makes us decide to do nothing at all. Overthinking is the false belief that a situation can only ever be resolved in one specific way. Now that’s enough to make anyone feel anxious. Stuart Edser - Counselling Psychologist

Shoulder pain

One of the most common causes of shoulder pain that we see in our clinic is called “shoulder impingement syndrome.” If you haven’t experienced this condition yourself, it is likely that you know someone that has suffered from it. The main symptoms include pain at the side or front of the shoulder, which may ache at rest and cause very sharp, sudden pain with certain movements. This can make simple tasks like reaching overhead or reaching behind to put a coat on very difficult. Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when tendons and/or bursa of the shoulder become impinged by a boney structure of the shoulder. The most common tendon that gets impinged and results in pain and lack of shoulder mobility is a tendon of the rotator cuff, the Supraspinatus tendon. This tendon travels through a very narrow space (the subacromial space) formed by the shoulder blade (scapula) and the upper arm bone (humerus). When the tendon becomes impinged, it can swell and cause pain leading to tendonitis. If the impingement is left untreated, over time, more complications of the shoulder can occur such as rotator cuff tendon tears or frozen shoulder. Shoulder impingement syndrome typically develops gradually over time from repetitive movements or postures such as: painting, seated mousing, lifting overhead, playing racket sports or hair dressing. Acupuncture is able to relieve the pain and immobility of shoulder impingement syndrome by reducing the swelling and pain of the impinged structures. It is also able to go one step further by relaxing shortened and tight muscles that might be putting your shoulder in the compromising posture, as well as stimulating overstretched, stabilizing muscles to engage. Thinking of listing?

One often asked question when an agent meets with prospective vendors thinking about listing their home for sale is: What do we need to do? 1. Prepare the property by tidying and doing all those little things you have been meaning to get around to for years, naturally, so you have it looking at its best for the new owner. 2. Contact your Solicitor to let them know what you are thinking of doing and ask them to prepare a Contract

for Sale which is a legal requirement before for a property can be placed on the market, an agent must hold a copy of the contract before they can market your property. Even if you are considering selling the property yourself you still require a Contract for Sale to be available for prospective purchasers to peruse relevant details about the property. 3. Select an agent to handle the marketing and selling of the property for you, obviously asking relevant questions about reputation, marketing strategy, the results achieved and of course enquire as to the agents fees and what that fee covers . Also what if anything you are expected to pay over and above that quoted fee. For example administration fee, signage, photos, auctioneers fees etc. Any extra fees should be clearly stated on the agency agreement. 4. Basically appoint an agent with whom you are comfortable, someone who is established in the industry and has worked in the area where your property is located. Do yourself a favour and do your research to make sure you are clear on everything that has been discussed, don’t hesitate to ask questions and follow up after the meeting with extra questions to the agent of your choice.

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

Pets with Diabetes What a nightmare! You have noticed your pet’s increased thirst and endless weeing and if you have a sensitive sense of smell you may have even noticed a strange sweet odour in the litter tray (or telegraph post). After several weeks of watching your previously tubby pet lose weight despite an urgent appetite, you take him to the vet where your suspicions are confirmed: diabetes mellitus! Diabetes mellitus is a diagnosis that many owners fear because it means daily – usually twice daily needles, regular feeding and possibly more frequent trips to the vet to monitor ongoing treatment.

SPORTS INJURIES? At Broadmeadow Medical Centre we are with you from the start for all your family’s medical needs.

However, many owners without a medical background or a million dollars successfully manage their pets into old age with a mixture of good observation skills, a regular lifestyle and a strong bond to their pet which convinces both parties that the daily needle is as much a part of life as cleaning their teeth. Just as in people, diabetes mellitus is caused when either there isn’t enough insulin to allow body cells to receive glucose from the bloodstream, or the cells have become resistant to the effects of insulin. Diabetic animals are tricked into thinking that they are starving, and break down muscle and fat just as if they were getting no food. But all the time the glucose level in the bloodstream is getting higher and higher until it spills out into the urine, taking extra water with it – that’s why they wee and drink excessively. Most dogs get insulin dependent diabetes and once diagnosed will need insulin injections morning and night for the rest of their lives. Most cats get noninsulin dependent diabetes and after a time and some weight loss they recover – some actually recover with diet and tablets alone. In some cases (we call this “brittle” diabetes) pets do not respond as predicted to insulin injections and may keep losing weight, or their glucose levels may fluctuate dramatically. This can be dangerous as too low a blood glucose (hypoglycaemia) can quickly lead to coma and death while too high a blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) causes more rapid development of the secondary problems of diabetes such as cataracts and renal insufficiency. Many cases of “brittle” diabetes can be put down to owners not knowing exactly how to give the insulin – eg it must be refrigerated, it must be rocked, not shaken, to mix before each use, as far as possible it must be given at the same time each day in the same type of syringe while feeding a standard diet with a standard calorie count for each meal. Other causes of brittle diabetes include concurrent infection (diabetic animals are especially prone to urinary tract infections), not being desexed, and other hormonal imbalances such as hypothyroidism or hyperadrenocorticism. Finally, if your pet has been newly diagnosed with diabetes, or you are struggling with treatment regimes, it may be very helpful for your to talk to another pet owner who has been in the same situation - call us and we’ll do some networking for you!

The painful knee in young athletes

Children may present with unique knee conditions. The tendency towards muscle tightness especially during the growth spurt predisposes them to overuse injuries. Knee pain presents most frequently in the second decade (ages 10-19) and is most often due to patellofemoral syndrome. Patellofemoral syndrome presents with pain behind the patella (kneecap) or deep in the knee. Often the pain is worsened by climbing stairs (especially walking down stairs), squatting or prolonged sitting.

It is more common in girls aged 13-15 years and is due to abnormal position and maltracking of the patella. Treatment involves correct diagnosis and commonly medial patella taping and exercises to strengthen the quadriceps muscle. Osgood-Schlatter Disorder also is most common in children aged 10-14 years, and three times more common in boys than girls. It presents as localised pain in the tibial tubercle (the area below the knee cap where the patella tendon inserts into the tibia). The pain presents during and after activity, and is common in sports involving running, kicking and jumping. Management is conservative, as this resolves spontaneously in 6-18 months. Acute pain is managed with ice packs and analgesics, with the main treatment to modify training and playing schedules and gentle quadriceps stretching and a graded return to full activity. Another common presentation at this time of the year is Severs disorder of the heel. This presents as a painful tender heel at the insertion of the Achilles tendon. It presents in athletes aged 7-15 yrs (Average 12 years) and is more common in boys. It is diagnosed clinically and by X-ray, and is managed by avoiding flat-heeled shoes and wearing a slightly raised heel. Strenuous exercise should be minimised for 12 weeks. Good luck for the season!

Our school vision is to produce students who are independent thinkers, innovative risk takers, creative, problem solvers and life-long learners: where the educational experience is holistic, real world, diverse and relevant to the 21 century. Consequently, the following projects will be implemented in 2017: 1. The impact and pedagogy of successful writing strategies: LHS for the past few years has had a focus on improving writing. The innovation team will meet to develop/undertake data collection methodologies that will evaluate the impact of existing writing techniques; attend professional learning on the pedagogy of teaching writing (differentiated); and create a whole school model of differentiated literacy pedagogy and methodology to measure effectiveness /impact. 2. The Junior/Senior school model (INNOVATE 5): To improve student engagement and outcomes to overcome the engagement dip in Year 9 and Year 10 and to better support Year 10 transition into senior school learning, this project proposes that a small team made up of staff, student representatives and community members undertake qualitative and quantitative research and analysis to make recommendations on changing structural and institutional features of our school by investigating: • the feasibility of successfully implementing a junior school/senior school model by 2019 with recommendations on a timeline and model of implementation • key teaching and learning strategies that will support a junior/senior school model (some to be trialled and evaluated in 2017 and 2018), that will engage students, increase their valuing of school outcomes, interest and motivation while also supporting the development of quality senior learning habits. It is the aim of these school-based projects to provide teachers with the opportunity to design creative, unique and collaborative projects that add further depth and quality to the education offered to students.

LAW

Matters by Chris Hill-Smith of Appleton Law, Lambton

Guardians

Legislation gives parents the right to appoint a guardian for their minor children in their will. The appointment makes the guardian responsible for the care, advancement and education of the child or children after the death of the parent. Usually the appointment is for a guardian in the event that the last surviving parent dies. That is because the Family Law Act, which is a Commonwealth Law, gives parents equal rights for the parental responsibility for their children. Where there is a dispute between the appointed guardian and another adult relative of the child, or possibly the other parent, court orders would have to

be sought from the Family Court and the court would give some weight to the appointment of the guardian in deciding what was in the best interests of the child and who should be granted parental responsibility for the child. So what are the responsibilities of a guardian? The general parental responsibilities include: providing a home for the child, which need not be the home of the guardian, having regular contact with the child, protecting the child, determining educational and religious needs, consenting to medical procedures for the child and attending to their general wellbeing. Because a guardian has those very important responsibilities it is vital that any parent considering appointing a guardian for their children consider where the guardian lives in relation to the child, the age of the proposed guardian, their relationship with the child and their ability to take care of the child. The proposed guardian will need to have a cooperative relationship with the executor of the estate and with other family members. A guardian is not expected to be ‘out of pocket’ for taking care of the child and they may apply to the executor/trustee for money to pay for the care, maintenance, education and advancement of the child. The guardian’s responsibilities for the child end when the child turns 18.
