Say ‘NO’ at Knights game to reduce DV

Melissa Histon, Clint Newton, Helen Cummings and Jon Chin say ‘No’ to domestic violence at McDonald Jones Stadium

Reducing domestic violence in our community will be a feature of half time activities at the Knights’ home game against the Warriors on Saturday 5 August.

In 2016 local charity, Got your Back Sista, asked the people of the Hunter to say ‘No to domestic violence’ in a community rally. This year, the charity has worked closely with the Newcastle Knights and McDonald Jones Stadium to use the half time break to again ask the people of the region to ‘Say No’.

It is expected that about 300 people wearing ‘Say No’ T-shirts will march onto the field at half time while a video and anthem are played.

Got Your Back Sista Founder, Melissa Histon, said that the initiative hoped to unite all sectors of the community to say we will not tolerate domestic violence.

“We are most grateful to the Newcastle Knights for allowing the charity to be part of the half-time entertainment. It is such a tremendous opportunity to invite thousands of local people to join this important conversation,” Melissa said.

“Our common goal is to stop the acceptance of violence across our world. Given that most of us work with, live near, or are related to someone who has experienced violence in their home or in their lives, it is not someone else’s problem. This is our region’s problem and we must do everything in our power to stop it. One more incidence of violence in our community is not acceptable,” she said.

The event will also serve to raise funds for women who are establishing their lives after fleeing domestic violence.

Got Your Back Sista was established as a registered charity in 2016 and works in collaboration with local refuges and services to provide women with vouchers and store credits to purchase essential items as part of the establishment of a new and safe home for themselves and their children. Items have included beds, refrigerators, household consumable items and kitchen appliances. It also provides workshops and a mentoring program. The organisation has to date provided more than $53,000 in support to local women.

Trio shines at Cross Country Champs Three local runners did themselves, their schools, their families and the Hunter region proud when they competed at the NSW Primary School Sports Association Cross Country Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern Creek) in July.

After each picking up their respective School cross country titles and athletics championships over recent months they moved on to the Zone and Hunter Regional events, acquitting themselves well at each level.

Archie McIlwain of New Lambton Public School qualified for the State Championships after coming 2nd in the Regionals; Finn Morris of Lambton Public School came in 5th; and Aiva Pinches also of New Lambton Public came in 5th as well.

At the State Championships the local trio gave it everything they had but came up against solid competition from across NSW. Archie posted a 46th place finish, Aiva a 51st place and Finn 73rd. A great effort all round!

Closure of Lambton New Lambton Lions Club The Lambton New Lambton Lions Club was chartered in 1979. So by June this year it had operated for 38 years, a fair innings indeed.

Lambton New Lambton Lions has as any other club in its 38 years, made a lot of history, we achieved much and served well, donated a lot of money to worthy causes and the Club was respected within the Lambton New Lambton Community.

Many good community-minded people, both male and female, have enjoyed membership of this Lions Club and worked hard to raise funds, to assist community members and worthy causes.

There was many reasons why this once thriving Lions Club has folded, but lack of interested people that might join the club was the main reason. Over the last few years the dedicated members left in the club truly tried to encourage new members. The advertising and membership drives achieved a few new members but those new members obtained, compared with the loss of members could not be contained, until the point of no return. The decision was made to take on the

process of the closure of the club. This took effect on the 30th June 2017.

In 1980 the Lambton New Lambton Lions sponsored the Lambton New Lambton Lioness Club and this thriving ladies club still operates within the local area with an ever increasing membership.

This well respected Lioness Club is undertaking great work within the community and is achieving wonderful things. That club’s responsibility has been handed over to another local Lions Club, The Waratah-Mayfield Blind and Vision Impaired Lions Club Inc. In effect the Lions Organisation will still be well represented within community by the Ladies of the Lambton New Lambton Lioness Club.

Our major Project since 2001, has been the Harker Canteen Project, where we maintained the Harker Oval Canteen on behalf of Western Suburbs Rugby League Club, and running this canteen for all their

Due to the decision to close, this became a very significant loss to the Lions Club of Lambton New Lambton, it not only brought to a club many thousands of dollars for charity, but it also had the benefit to spread the Lions reputation throughout the general community, and we also set up good relationships with those working for the Wests Group Australia and the members of the Harker Oval Trust. We concluded this project after the end of the football season of 2015.

A handful of dedicated members have been working hard to properly close the club in a very responsible and professional way since 2015.

Those final members have resolved to inform the community of Lambton New Lambton and indeed all that read Lambton & New Lambton Local, officially about the closure of the Lambton New Lambton Lions Club. Submitted with much regret,

Forum for local election candidates Lambton Residents Group will host a Candidates Forum for electoral hopefuls just prior to the upcoming local government election. All interested local residents and business people are invited to attend the Forum and have their questions put to the candidates. The event will be held at Lambton Bowling Club, from 6.00 to 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th September On Saturday 9th September all voters living within Newcastle City Council areas will go to the polls to elect three Councillors per Ward and to elect a Lord Mayor.

All Candidates for Ward 3 Councillor positions will be invited to participate in the Forum which will be hosted by experienced facilitator and member of Lambton Residents Group, Mr Don Herron.

Most areas of Lambton and New Lambton are within Ward 3. The only exceptions are parts of New Lambton South, near Kings Rd which are in Ward 2 and those parts of New Lambton Heights west of Marshall Ave which fall into Lake Macquarie. Lake Macquarie will not be going to an election.

The Election for Newcastle City Council will be held on Saturday 9th September. All residents living in the City of Newcastle local government area who are on the Commonwealth/State electoral roll are automatically included on the roll for the local government election. No dog lover

I will admit I am not a dog lover but have no issues with a fenced off-leash area being created in our local area.

As you commented in your article last month a number of dogs are off leads in Lambton Park.

There is a dog that is “walked” in our street that is not on a lead when it leaves its house, it is “walked” down the street and around the park.

One afternoon recently as they were returning from the park this dog literally attacked the front door of another house as the dog inside was barking, it leapt over the fence and slammed into this person’s front door, just as I was about to pass them on the footpath.

I had decided to walk out on the

road just so I could avoid a dog not on a lead (as I said above I do not like dogs) - I have witnessed these people many many times walking their dog not on a lead.

My street is full of dogs and no one can walk a dog down our street without every one of them barking their heads off. What I witnessed the other day was quite frightening

as I was in the firing line. If I had continued walking on the footpath.

I say YES to having the fenced off leash area but somehow ensuring that dogs are on leads in the rest of the park needs policing and respected by all dog owners which I assure you is not currently the case.

JHH parking fees

Patients and carers who frequently visit John Hunter Hospital are benefitting from reduced car parking fees under expanded concessions which came into effect on 1 July.

Under the new policy at John Hunter Hospital, a three-day discounted ticket now costs a maximum of $10.90 and a seven-day ticket $21.70, and both allow multiple entries and exits.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said a website and smartphone app – the first of its kind in Australia – will provide information on how to access the discounted rates.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC “The NSW Government has implemented a much fairer system that helps those most in need with car parking costs at public hospitals – particularly patients and carers who visit frequently or for longterm treatments,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The new website and app will also make it much easier for public hospital patients and visitors to understand how to access the expanded concessions, as well as providing useful information on their local hospital.”

Signage will be displayed prominently throughout paid parking car parks with instructions on how and where patients can validate concessional parking.

Those eligible for discounted hospital car parking include patients and carers attending hospital for treatment lasting more than a week, patients and carers attending more than twice a week, ongoing cancer treatment patients, cardiac rehabilitation education exercise class attendees, daily dressing outpatients and health promotion education class attendees.

New adventure playground for Blackbutt’s Richley Reserve

Artist’s impression of the new playground A new $1.5 million adventure playground will be built in Blackbutt’s Richley Reserve to draw more people to the northern side of the city’s ‘green heart’.

The playground replacement will be accompanied by shade structures, seating and BBQ areas, which will be easier for people with limited mobility to access thanks to new pathways.

“Blackbutt Reserve is a big winner in the budget” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“The new Richley Reserve playground will be another great

addition and provide families an alternative to the increasingly busy Carnley Avenue playground.

“Blackbutt is already one of the Hunter’s premier attractions and the latest work will allow more picnickers and health enthusiasts to make the most of it.

The Richley Reserve work includes signposts indicating the Farrell’s Way entrance and opens the site to people who previously couldn’t negotiate its steep terrain.

The new playground will include a climbing tower with bridges, slide and fireman pole, rope courses,

tunnels, tee pee, rock and stick play, tunnel slide, spinner, swings, sand pit, see saw and imaginative play spaces.

Community consultation between 2009 and 2011 informed a Plan of Management for Blackbutt in which a new playground was slated for Richley Reserve.

Blackbutt Reserve is the popular ‘green heart’ of Newcastle, attracting more than 100,000 visitors to its nature trails, wildlife exhibits and recreational facilities across 182 hectares.

Knights bros bring smiles for kids On a recent visit to Ronald McDonald House at New Lambton Heights the Mata’utia brothers of the Mata’utia Brothers Foundation joined families with sick and injured children for an afternoon of fun and crafts.

“I just want to put a smile on a kids’ faces”, says Sione Mata’utia.

And along with his brothers he did just that.

Among the many families was two year old Austin and his parents, Nathan and Alana. Their lives were turned upside down after receiving the devastating news that Austin was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Austin was enamoured by the Red Energy Newcastle Knights Cheerleaders who also joined in the afternoon of fun.

The Mata’utia Brothers visiting Ronald McDonald House had fun painting her own and the Mata’utia brothers faces. Letty is the big sister of Ivvy who was born at 37 weeks with a twisted bowel and has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.

Letty with her parents Luke and Melissa have been staying at Ronald McDonald since May so they can be close while Ivvy receives the vital care she needs at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

Type 2 diabetics sought to help in heart risk study Researchers from the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital, led by Professor Manohar Garg and Dr Sham Acharya are looking for 50 volunteers to take part in a sixweek clinical trial which will examine the use of curcumin and/ or omega-3 fats for lowering heart disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes.

People with type 2 diabetes have up to four times higher risk of developing heart disease.

They have higher levels of blood fats (triglycerides) and low levels of HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol) than those without diabetes. Combined with underlying chronic inflammation in people with type 2 diabetes, increase in blood lipids further escalates the risk of developing heart disease. Since blood lipids and chronic inflammation are manageable risk factors, a multidimensional approach may be ideal to efficiently target this multifaceted disease.

We aim to reduce both the blood fats and inflammation using curcumin and omega-3 fats simultaneously. Curcumin will

It was there then, it’s where now?

The Power Station Plaque

In 1890 Lambton became just the third town in New South Wales to have electric street lighting.

To power the lights a generating station was constructed in a disused quarry on Newcastle Road.

The opening of the station was commemorated with a plaque above the door reading:

Lambton Electric Light Station W.T. Dent Mayor 1890

The electric light scheme was a commercial failure, the power station was shut down, and the building removed in 1904.

Thirty-four years later in 1938, the Newcastle Herald reported an interesting discovery.

“When a house was being demolished in Kendall Street, Lambton, some time ago, workmen found beneath it an old cast iron plate. It was rusted and slightly the worse of wear, but it told the story of a venture undertaken by Lambton Council 48 years ago, when a desperate attempt to leap to prosperity ended in a glorious failure.”

“When the electricity undertaking failed the power-house, which had been erected near the quarry, was demolished. The cast iron plate telling the date of the undertaking and the nature of the industry was removed and taken by the former Town Clerk (Mr. T. Johnson) to his home in Kendall Street. It was there that the workmen found it, leaning against a stone pile

beneath the house. A treasured memorial, that old plate. Outside the debt it was all the council had left to remind it of the commercial venture.

Taken to the council chambers some weeks before the council disbanded the plate was cleaned up and lettering picked out in white.

It still leans against a wall in the silent interior of that abandoned room.”

Subsequently the Newcastle Herald reported in 1975, that the plaque was “now on public display at Nesca House”. Last heard of 42 years ago, does anyone know where the plaque is now?

Many studies have shown how winter and less sunlight can affect our moods and energy levels. But rather than give yourself a hard time about your lack of energy, why not just try a different approach.

In bygone days of working outdoors and being more focused on ‘surviving’, we would have bunkered down after working hard in the fields in finer weather gathering our food and produce for the long winter months ahead.

This is where the saying, ‘make hay while the sun shines’ originates. Nowadays, we attribute this saying to making money and wealth. How time changes our perspective! Yet winter is a time to ‘make hay whilst the sun shines’ - internally.

I find winter one of the best times to dive a little deeper into my personal meditation practice.

Meditation is not hard to learn but it does require practice and dedication. Over the past 7 years, I have taught hundreds of people how to meditate and find it one of the most rewarding parts of my business.

Beginner meditation courses are a great way for you to start as you are introduced to easy to learn, practical methods of meditation for your home practice.

Meditation is now being widely accepted as an integral part of health and wellbeing amongst healthcare professionals and meditation rooms are now found in most hospitals in Australia. It is also used in schools around Australia to support students.

Recently, a ground breaking research study funded by the Victorian Government has found that mindfulness meditation can lead to improved quality of sleep, less anxiety and better exam results for students. The results showed the positive impact was wide-ranging, with students reporting significant reductions in bullying incidents and disruptive behavior in the classroom as well as improvements in sleep quality, concentration, behaviour and engagement.

At risk students benefited the most; students who experienced higher levels of emotional distress before participating in the program showed the biggest improvements.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is bone disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration in the architecture of bone. Approximately 2 million Australians have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Some of the signs and symptoms of osteoporosis include unexplained back pain, a loss of height, falls, and a history of minimal trauma fracture Unfortunately up to 30-50% of women and 15-30% of men will develop an osteoporotic fracture within their lifetime.; 46% will be vertebral fractures, 16% hip fracture and 16% will be a wrist fracture.

Non-modifiable risk factors for developing menopause include; increasing age, female gender,

early menopause, having a family history of osteoporosis, prior minimal trauma fracture and thyroid disease.

Modifiable risk factors for developing osteoporosis include; low body weight, lack of exercise, low calcium intake, Vitamin D deficiency, smoking, various medications and excess alcohol use.

Investigations your GP may order may include an X-ray to document fracture number, type, and location and a number of blood tests to measure Calcium and Vitamin D levels, and to exclude secondary causes of osteoporosis. The best and most appropriate test is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Scan. This test is covered by Medicare in some but not all patients.

The BMD result helps predict fracture risk, helps guide treatment decisions and helps monitor the effectiveness of therapy Initial treatment for all patients includes ensuring adequate blood Vitamin D and Calcium levels.

If these are deficient Calcium and/or Vitamin D supplementation may be required. In addition to this weight bearing exercise is recommended to preventing osteoporosis. This may include resistance training 3-5 times/week or walking 90-280 minutes week. Muscle strengthening and balance training can reduce falls in high risk groups. If you have any concerns regarding the risks, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, please discuss with your GP.

Making it easier for First Home Buyers to get into the property market

The First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme came into effect on 1 July 2017, making it easier for First Home Buyers to secure a home of their own.

Eligible First Home Buyers will receive an exemption in stamp duty on a brand new or existing home, up to $650,000.00. A concession in stamp duty is also available for homes between $650,000.00 and $800,000.00.

A First Home Buyer may also purchase vacant land to build their first home. An exemption in stamp

duty is available for vacant land up to $350,000.00.

A concession on stamp duty is available for land between $350,000.00 and $450,000.00.

A First Home Buyer, and their spouse, must never have owned residential property in Australia. They must also occupy their first home for a continuous period of six months, commencing within twelve months of settlement. There are exemptions to this requirement for members of the Defence Force.

The First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme also allows a Shared Equity Arrangement. This means that an eligible First Home Buyer can buy a property with another party, such as a parent, and receive a concession in duty. To qualify, the eligible First Home Buyer must buy at least fifty percent (50%) of the property.

Stamp duty is calculated on the proportion of the property purchased by the other party however, this is disregarded if they are purchasing less than 5% of the property. If the spouse or defacto partner of a First Home Buyer has previously owned property, they will not be eligible for an exemption or concession under the Shared Equity Arrangement. The value limits and other eligibility criteria, some of which are set out above, also apply.

The First Home Owner Grant is still available however, it relates to the purchase of a brand new home, or a Contract to build one.

Protecting your business While your contents insurance might protect the valuable items in your home, it may not cover specialised work items like tools or IT equipment.

Medicines and breastfeeding

The first week of August, 1–7, is World Breastfeeding Week. In Australia, most babies (96%) are initially breastfed and it’s a key contributor to infant health.

At this time, let’s consider taking medicines when breastfeeding.

Medicines can be defined as either prescription (only available with a prescription from a healthcare professional such as a doctor), over-the-counter (available without a prescription, often from a pharmacy) and complementary (e.g. herbal, natural

and alternative medicines). Most medicines pass into breast milk but usually only in very small quantities.

These quantities are generally too small to be harmful to the baby.

Many women will take some kind of medicine when breastfeeding. Some breastfeeding mothers may need to take medicine regularly to treat a medical condition. Others may take medicine occasionally when required to treat a sudden, limiting condition such as a headache, cough or cold. It is important when using any medicine while breastfeeding to consider the benefits to the mother compared with any risk it may pose to the baby. Discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

Detailed information on medicines and breastfeeding is available from the Self Care Fact Card, Medicines and breastfeeding, which is available from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information. NPS MedicinesWise is a helpful consumer website that has information about medicines and breastfeeding.

Using a courier to avoid excess baggage It is rather embarrassing to reach the airport checkin counter only to find that your carry-on bag is too heavy. These days, airlines strictly enforce the amount of checked baggage and carry-on luggage on international flights; and any more than your ‘free’ baggage allowance may incur additional charges.

It happened to us once at Berlin - causing us to frantically re-pack our carry-on bags and jettison some heavy paperwork.

This crackdown on baggage is partly behind a boom in so-called ‘Delivery to Door Couriers’.

These services will usually collect baggage from your door and deliver them to your destination leaving you to enjoy a hassle-free journey.

Several firms operate in Europe and the US - and we know of at least one that sends boxes by air or sea from Australia.

The service generally includes air freight, customs clearance, terminal fees, and local delivery costs to your international address.

Like normal airline baggage, there are, of course, restrictions on dangerous goods.

We’re yet to try one of these services, but it seems that the cost depends on how much you want shipped.

But, if you are are concerned about the possibility of excess baggage, these couriers may be well worth a look.

Dear Dr Fiona, After reading your article in “The Local” dated June 2017 I was wondering what was meant by “bee retribution?”

I am a local backyard bee keeper who also has chooks. Both are in fairly close proximity to each other and have been for a few years now and they seem to cohabitate very nicely.

Can you explain what the issue may be please?

I am interested that you have chooks and bees cohabiting.

The advice in my column was based on a conversation with a bee expert from the University of New England, who is currently studying honey bees as a marker environmental contamination in certain local areas.

As you know there is always the odd dead and dying bee around hives, and chickens are attracted to little moving morsels.

The fear is that scent given off by an injured bee may cause the other bees to attack the chicken – as indeed they do if they are disturbed by unfamiliar scents or lights in their home range.

I will pass on your experience to my bee advisor.

Perhaps your chickens are wiser than most? Or perhaps chickens generally are smarter than we think (not unlikely!). However the threat of that sort of accident has prevented me at least from taking the risk of adding chickens to my backyard collection Kind Regards

Depression hurdles - Isolation

Depression should be taken seriously. It is a debilitating disorder that none of us are immune from. In my early thirties, I had a bout of it myself. A very tough period.

Depression can alter our thoughts so that ‘depression thoughts’ seem reasonable. They are not. They isolate us and can lead us to dangerous modes of thinking.

I want to focus on a few major depression hurdles over the next few months that we have to learn to jump over if we are to beat the ‘black dog’.

In August, we look at the first hurdle: isolation.

When people get depressed, one of the first things they typically do is to isolate themselves. They start to cut themselves off from family, from friends, from partners. They stay inside. They stop going out. They say no to invitations. From now on, the house, the living room, the bedroom becomes the locus of their lives.

I call it ‘going into the cave’. In the cave, I remain alone. I don’t want to see people. I don’t want to talk to people. I don’t want to have to be around people.

As a matter of fact, I might feel so bad that I actually don’t want to inflict myself on other people!

When we retreat to the cave, something happens. I stop doing the things I enjoy doing. I unplug from the things that usually make me happy: sports, hobbies, crafts, music, films, friends – they all go.

It is these twin symptoms - isolation and disengagement - that keep us stuck in depression.

To beat it, you have to come out of the cave. No-one beats depression in the cave. You beat depression by emerging back into the world where you can start to re-engage.

Psoriasis

Itchy winter skin is one thing, but the chronic, silvery scaling of psoriasis is another.

For many sufferers of psoriasis, winter often heralds an increase in red, patchy areas of silvery scaling skin. As one of the most common skin disorders, psoriasis can plague people for many years, but is most common between 15-30 years old, worsening with stress, diet and climate.

In Chinese Medicine, raw Chinese herbal formulas are our go-to for most serious skin conditions, as they allow us to target the internal inflammation and encourage skin healing. We often combine them with Acupuncture to help with accompanying triggers such as stress or digestive problems.

In ‘active phases’ (where new rashes occur) we focus on reducing the heat, inflammation and the itch. Once new rashes have stopped and skin begins healing, we focus on promoting tissue regeneration, with nourishing herbs to combat dryness and relieve any lingering inflammation.

What defines psoriasis?

Some cases of psoriasis respond well to steroid creams, others constantly relapse and experience thinning skin.

The twenty fourth annual Lambton High School Green Day was celebrated on Friday 23 June with the theme being Cool People Help a Warm Planet.

The aim was to encourage the school community to make a positive change to make the world a better place environmentally. In the lead up to Green Day, many faculties within the school held a competition or activity, which met the requirements of the curriculum, while at the same time promoted an environmental message.

The day started with a concert organised by the Music Department and the Student Leadership Body which involved music groups, a drama video, an environmental game and a highly competitive fashion parade. Other activities involved a barbecue and a green cake stall; Hunter Water had a van set up in the quadrangle during the day and focused on water and the responsible disposal of rubbish; environmental cake decorating competition; and thought provoking environmental plays.

Star Struck’s 25th year celebration, Shine On, once again showcased the talent of students in the Public Education System. It was a very enjoyable evening highlighting the talents of both staff and students at our school and across the Hunter Region. Shelby Lincoln , Jayde Corner, Amy Mason, Alex Weinzerl, Jacob Yeomans and Yasmin Ling were all featured vocalists. Other featured artists include Hayden Pearce on the guitar; Kelly Mitchell instrumentalist; Nick Bright, Finn Kingston, Hayden Pearce, Chris Holburn featuring in the student rock bands; Hayden Jeffriess, Maggie Hartsuyker and Chloe Doyle featuring in the orchestra; and Declan Bright as a senior backing vocalist. Congratulations to all involved!

On Thursday 29 June, we held our NAIDOC celebrations to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. The day consisted of activities such as the official NAIDOC Assembly, Murook Cultural Centre dancers, Awabakal excursion to Dudley, smoking ceremony, boomerang throwing and Aboriginal treasure hunt. I would like to recognise Mrs Elbourne and the Aboriginal Education Committee for organising the day.

Sam Poolman, who plays defence for the Giants in the Suncorp Super Netball competition, spent her junior years playing for Wests Leagues.

“It’s great to be back at the West’s home courts. The girls here today were me only a few short years ago. It’s nice to be able to give something back to a club that meant so much to me during my early playing days” Sam told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

Sam has recently been selected to wear the green and gold for the first time at senior level when she represents Australia in the Fast5 Netball World Series in Melbourne in October.

His other interest was in building WW1 memorials. Fortunately he photographed his work and Anne has a remarkable collection of these images. William Fraser also engaged in trick photography, one image showing him playing cards with himself. NEIGHBOUR AID SOCIAL SUPPORT We offer companionship to those over 65 years, transport to appointments, assistance with shopping, social interaction, activities and lunch at our centres. We also have day bus trips every month. Volunteers also needed to help with transport for the elderly a few hours a fortnight.
