Advertising bookings for the July issue will close on Friday 14th July... Lambton & New Lambton Local is lovingly produced and carefully hand delivered each and every month to more than 9,500 residential letterboxes and businesses in Lambton, North Lambton, New Lambton & New Lambton Heights. If you enjoy receiving Lambton & New Lambton Local in your letterbox each month please spend with the businesses you see advertising within its pages. Without their support your local paper could not and would not happen. Pretty simple really...

If Mary Webster of Lambton has her way her local park will be one of the first areas in Newcastle to have a fenced leash-free area for dogs to play, exercise and socialise in. “Whilst there’s a number of areas locally that are designated as dog off-leash areas, none are fenced. Some owners, especially those with younger dogs are hesitant to use such areas in case their pup takes off. A dedicated fenced area would make things safer for all. It would bring positive social experiences for dogs as well as providing peace of mind for owners and other park users” Mary told Lambton & New Lambton Local. Mary is so passionate about the idea she took a petition around the local area earlier this year. The area which Mary has in mind is the roughly triangular, tree-covered area of Lambton Park between the Swimming Centre and the Bowling Club. This 3000 sq m space is not currently used for any particular purpose.

proposed for park With the support of Councillor Declan Clausen Mary’s petition, with 107 signatures, was presented to Newcastle Council in April. As a result a Resolution was carried to the effect that Council considers the development of a fenced dog park in Lambton Park alongside similar requests for such areas at Novocastrian Park in New Lambton as well as in Waratah and Carrington. At present, no part of Lambton Park is designated as an off-leash area. Lambton & New Lambton Local has been contacted previously by a number of residents concerned by the number of dogs that are regularly exercised without a leash in Lambton Park. Lambton Residents Group is supporting Mary to hold a community meeting at the proposed fence area between the Swimming Centre and the Bowling Club on Sunday 9 July from 9.30-10.30am. At this photo event Mary will update locals on where the project currently stands. As many local dog owners as possible are invited to attend to show Newcastle Council how much support there is for such a facility.

Go Finn Go! 9 year old Finn Morris appears destined to make a name for himself in athletics, running especially. The Year 4 student from Lambton Public School will compete in the State Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek in Sydney in late July. “After winning the school cross country last term I did pretty well in the Zone Carnival, coming 4th. This meant I qualified for the Regional Carnival at Cessnock where I came in 5th.” Finn told Lambton & New Lambton Local. “Who knows what will happen at the State event. It will be a great experience, I can’t wait” Finn added. When you hear that Finn won most of the events he entered at the recent Lambton Public School athletics carnival it’s no surprise that he was awarded the Junior Championship trophy. Good luck Finn at the State Cross Country!

Change of career brings award New Lambton’s, Tim LindsayBrown recently received the annual KU Children’s Services Award for his commitment to excellence. Tim will complete his Diploma of Early Childhood Education at TAFE NSW next month, and has been working full-time as a Childhood Educator at a kindergarten in Garden Suburb for the past year. “It feels really good to receive this award. I really do like my job, what I’m doing every day, and the supportive experience I have had at TAFE NSW from my teachers who are such great educators. The award really is the cherry on top,” said Mr Lindsay-Brown. Tim found his path into early childhood education after years working as a civil engineer and studying at university. After work started to “dry-up for undergraduate engineers” Tim took up a part-time job in youth work that sparked his interest in a career working with children. “A lot of coincidences led me into this field. I enrolled in the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education at TAFE NSW while I was still studying engineering at university and doing part-time youth work. About two months

Tim Lindsay-Brown receives his award from Lyn Connors, Director of KU Childrens Services into the course I decided that was it, and dropped my engineering degree to focus on a career in early childhood education,” he said. “My background in civil engineering has been very handy. It equips me well to teach children how to build things and understand concepts such as water pathways. For example we recently made a hanging garden from a recycled palette. The children love it, they want to jump in and have a go. “Children know what they want to learn and can generally figure out how to do it. Sometimes they just

need a little help here and there, but I really enjoy watching them learn. This then helps me know how to approach learning activities the next day, or the next week with the children in my care,” he said. Early childhood education is traditionally a female-dominated sector, but Tim said: “I think the parents and teachers really appreciate the different perspective I bring. It helps children understand how males behave, interact and engage in a really natural learning environment.”

Wests chef reaches national awards final Daniel Wijekoon, sous chef at Hobart’s by Lesley Taylor, one of the restaurants on level one of Wests New Lambton, reached the Grand Final of the national Chef of the Year competition, which took place in Melbourne last month. In his first ever cooking competition, Daniel batted off some fierce competition to reach the Grand Final – and while he was pipped at the post by Michael Cole of Mornington Peninsula’s Georgie Bass, the judges were so impressed with him that they created a special award for him to acknowledge his performance. “I am really proud that I reached the final, but also that Hobarts is being recognised on a wider stage. I really feel like it’s a bit of a hidden gem in Newcastle, and it’s great to spread the word.” Sri Lanka-born Daniel trained as a

Daniel Wijekoon of Hobart’s by Lesley Taylor chef in London before moving to Australia. For the competition Daniel created an Entree of ovenroasted lamb with pineapple cream and a beetroot curry jus. He paired this with a Main of Sous vide beef,

parsnip puree, swede, turnip and a red wine jus. Hobarts by Lesley Taylor at Wests New Lambton is open for Dinner Wednesday to Saturday and for High Tea on Sunday afternoon.

No Lights No Lycra returns Get excited because No Lights No Lycra (NLNL) has returned. What’s that you say? It is a place for people to come and dance freely in a friendly, nonthreatening, drug and alcohol free atmosphere. NLNL is an event that occurs in a dimly lit room: with the lights low, people can truly dance without worrying about what they look like. It is a time to dance independently in the company of others. NLNL is not about technique and being a ‘good’ dancer, it’s about the experience of dancing with no one watching and the joy that this brings. It is a place to exercise at your own pace while having fun. It promotes a healthy mind and a healthy body. It’s about making dance accessible for everyone.

It is open to all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics. NLNL is a place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself. Talking is discouraged and there

are no spectators allowed, only participants. NLNL is held each Wednesday from 6-7pm at the Polish Cultural Centre, 122 Chatham St, Broadmeadow. Entry is $5 per person.

That was then, this is now Blackbutt Reserve

Blackbutt Reserve today owes its existence to a strange combination of business prosperity, national adversity, and private tenacity. The current area of the Reserve lies wholly within the boundaries of a coal mining lease of the Scottish Australian Mining Company. The eighteen hundred acre lease extended from Kotara South to Jesmond. Mining commenced in 1863, and apart from occasional downturns, the colliery prospered. Therefore, above ground there was little development apart from buildings such as pumping stations, required to support underground mining operations. However, with the depletion of coal, and rising land taxes, the S.A.M Company looked for other income, from real estate. Between 1915 and 1925 the company developed and sold a few small subdivisions in Lambton, New Lambton, and Kotara. In June 1932, they attempted to auction a large parcel of land, in what is now the southern part of Blackbutt Reserve. The nation at this time however, was suffering the adversity of economic depression. There was little appetite for land purchases, and only five of the 52 lots on offer were sold. The failure of the auction thus

by Lachlan Wetherall

left open a window of opportunity for local councils to purchase the land for a nature reserve, starting with 17 acres on Lookout Road in 1938, and increasing to 144 acres by 1940. In 1956, Newcastle Council bought another 270 acres from the S.A.M. Company, in what is now the northern part of Blackbutt Reserve. Council wanted to subdivide all this land for housing, but through the tenacious opposition of private citizens and community groups, this development was blocked. Instead, the land was added to Blackbutt Reserve. Community opposition had to swing into action again in 1966 to prevent the Department of Main Roads building an expressway through the Reserve. Many individuals worked tirelessly for the establishment and preservation of Blackbutt Reserve. One in particular, Joe Richley, president of the Northern Parks and Playgrounds Movement for 20 years, is commemorated in the name of Richley Reserve. You can view these photos and more details at www. lachlanwetherall.com

Open letter to Board Directors Western Suburbs (N’cle) Leagues Club Ltd... Local resident Tony Keating recently forwarded this letter to Lambton & New Lambton Local for publication....... Wests is a highly successful business - asset and cash rich; community and future focussed. Over the years, the Club has invested wisely and grown the business to include high quality premises, facilities, and services for its members. It has reached out to its community and supported a diversity of community and charitable organisations. That reach isn’t just rugby league, which was the foundations stone of the Club. Wests provides support for an array of other sporting organisations. Rugby League is still core and the prime benefactor of Wests sporting and community support program. Wests is and continues to be a huge supporter and sponsor of the Knights. This shouldn’t change. However, the Club and its commendable Board of Directors, are being placed under pressure by external forces to move away from a support and sponsorship model to be outright owners of the Newcastle Knights. In essence, this is a classic heart and head dilemma. The emotional and greater community consideration sees the scales tip towards supporting an ownership stake. However, the cold hard economic facts and the interests of the membership of Wests, strongly underpins maintaining the status quo by continuing to support and sponsor the Newcastle Knights. Over the past three years (2013 to 2016), the underlying losses of NRL Clubs has grown from $27.3m to $56.3M. Only three Clubs (Brisbane, Souths and Warriors) made a profit in 2016. Accumulated debts of the Clubs are funded by poker machines, private ownership, public corporation such as News Corp (majority owner Melbourne and Brisbane) and the shrinking profits of the NRL in their life support of the Knights and Titans. This is an unsustainable funding paradigm. In 2016, on average, NRL Clubs each spent $15.3m. The big spender was Parramatta with expenditure of $18.7m If the present circumstances weren’t concerning enough stormy seas are ahead. Increasing operational costs, particularly coming from escalating player demands; contracting revenue streams from

traditional sources such as broadcasting rights and advertising; increased competition from other sports for the sporting dollar and reduced gate and merchandise sales. The trend is obvious and alarming – costs and losses escalating, revenues declining. The NRL and NRL Clubs are haemorrhaging and the financial defibrillators of the past are exceedingly low on charge! It’s a simple question – would you invest your hardearned funds in such a business? I think not! Say YES to the Knights BUT, NO to the NRL The Directors and Management of Wests have made many smart and financially considered decisions in the past. A decision to continue its support and sponsorship of the Knights and to outright reject the NRL overtures would be one that ensures this wise decision making continue Tony Keating - Hill Street, North Lambton Wests Member

Travel health

As the number of Australians travelling overseas increases, so does the number of travellers who become ill – sometimes fatally. There are many things you can do to ensure you are a healthy traveller, and your local pharmacy can assist with these preparations. First of all, visit your general practitioner for a thorough check-up to ensure there are no underlying health issues, which may affect your travels. Then ask your local pharmacist or look for a pharmacy offering travel advice services or travel clinics. They

can advise on issues such as vaccinations, travelling with medicines, and treating common travel illnesses. It can be difficult to buy medicines and first aid supplies in countries where you do not speak or read the language. Your pharmacist can provide recommendations for over-the-counter medicines and first aid supplies which are useful to take with you. Your local pharmacy can supply you with other useful items such as: • Rehydration fluid and anti-diarrhoea medicine • Anti-nausea medicine • Sunscreen and insect repellent • Items for the plane including ear plugs, eye drops for dry eye, compression garments • Basic pain relief • Allergy medicine • Wound care products • Foot care products. You can get more detailed information on travel health from the Self Care Fact Card titled Travel health available from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information, or Ask Piggotts! Insomnia

Insomnia is a common presentation in general practice. It is defined as distressing difficulty with sleep onset, maintenance or early morning awakening, and these symptoms arise despite adequate time in bed. Chronic insomnia is defined as sleep difficulties being present for greater than 1 month and occurring greater than 3 times per week. Insomnia is a very common complaint with 33% of population experiencing at least one symptom. Depression and anxiety conditions are highly linked with chronic insomnia, and in in fact insomnia is a

significant risk factor for developing depression. When taking a history your doctor may ask about your normal sleep routine, your normal bed routine and how your lifestyle has been affected and the impact of sleep problems on daytime functioning? You may also be asked about behaviours known to interfere with sleep, such as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco use, use recreational drugs, late-evening exercise, or on-call or shift work obligations. Secondary causes which may need to be excluded include sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome or shift- work sleep disorder. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment not reliant on medication. CBT challenges maladaptive behaviours and cognitions, introduces sleep-conducive behaviours , whilst raising awareness of unhelpful/unrealistic expectations. The effectiviness of medications which have been used in the past (such as Temazepam and Zolpidem) are limited in that they are the short-term use only, and there is a potential for tolerance and dependence. More recently, the use of Melatonin (2-5mg) has proved very effective in may patients. If you are suffering symptoms of insomnia, please discuss with your GP.

Open House hints and etiquette

There are a lot of buyers vying for homes at the moment, so having an effective plan of action assists you to view them as promptly and effectively as possible on any given day. Firstly wear comfortable shoes which are easily removed at the door, a lot of home owners and tenants prefer potential buyers to remove their shoes before having a wander through the property. Carry the shoes with you so you can pop them on to

go for a stroll in the grounds, if so desired. Have your details ready for the Agent to take down, some buyers these days have cards made up with their Names, Mobiles and Email details (this is a great time saver) just hand a card to the agent and stroll through the property. Be sure to take one of the Agents cards with you when you leave, so if you wish to chat with them privately and the opportunity is not available at the open home you can contact the agent who was at the property and ask specific questions about the home. If you wish to have a contract forwarded to you just let the agent know when leaving and they will forward you a copy of the marketing contract to peruse. Ensure you take information flyers on each home, if it is of any interest to you, especially if it includes a Floor Plan. It will help you differentiate, once you sit down to analyse how the properties compare, don’t hesitate to ask questions of the agent and request a second private viewing, if so desired. Finally, don’t try to look at too many properties in one session take a break, have a coffee, clear your head and start all over again. Good luck with your search for a suitable property to fit your needs in the near future.

forward neck posture. Carrying a heavy purse or bag over one shoulder. Sleeping on the stomach with the head turned. Emotional stress leading to elevated shoulders. Holding the phone between the ear and shoulder while talking. The treatment of neck pain due to Levator scapula trigger points is often straightforward and typically offers quick relief of both pain and stiffness. Treatment includes: Assessment of posture and location of trigger points Release of trigger points through a combination of Acupuncture and soft tissue therapies. Treatment of any underlying causes, i.e stress. Self-care education that can include: postural exercises, stretches, and/or self -trigger point release techniques.

Have you ever woken from a night’s sleep only to find your neck is so stiff and painful that you are unable to turn your head? A small muscle in your neck called the “Levator scapula” aka “the stiff neck muscle” may have been the culprit. The Levator scapula is found in the back of the neck and as its name suggests, it elevates Ryan Samuels Registered Acupuncturist & Herbalist (“levator”) the shoulder blade (scapula). It gets its nickname the “stiff neck muscle” because it often becomes stiff, rigid and unmovable upon waking, especially if you have spent the night sleeping on your stomach with your head turned. Other factors that can cause pain, stiffness and lack of mobility of the Levator scapula and neck are the development of small knots in the muscle, aka trigger points. Trigger points in Levator scapula can cause neck pain and restricted neck movement, which can force you to turn your entire body instead of your neck when doing simple tasks like shoulder checking, or turning to speak to others. We offer therapies to help with: Often individuals with trigger points in the Levator scapula will present with the affected shoulder blade ➤ Shoulder pain ➤ Vertigo ➤ Sciatica raised slightly higher than that of the unaffected side. ➤ Constipation ➤ Anxiety Trigger points in the Levator scapula can refer pain to other surrounding areas. Running a home business: are you covered?

Setting up a business at home can be extremely rewarding, especially if it gives you more time to spend with family. But without the financial safety net an employer can provide, it’s vital that you have the right types of insurance in place to cover all eventualities.

Protecting your business While your contents insurance might protect the valuable items in your home, it may not cover specialised work items like tools or IT equipment. These can be expensive to repair or replace, and your work can really be held up if you don’t have the cash to fix them. So you might want to consider specific insurance that can cover the costs of getting your equipment back up and running. And when your home is also your workplace, you’re responsible for anyone who comes on site for business reasons. Public liability insurance protects you if a customer or supplier gets injured or has their property damaged while at your home. Protecting your staff If you’re running your business with someone else, including a spouse or family member, then you need to think about what would happen if one of you became seriously ill or injured – or even passed away. Unfortunately, when a small business loses a staff member, it can often signal the end of the whole organisation. Key person insurance enables you to take out life cover for a partner or employee, with the business named as the beneficiary. This means the business receives a payout if that person dies or becomes incapacitated. The money can then be used to compensate for the loss and keep things running until a replacement person can be found. Protecting your loved ones If you’re self-employed, you need to think carefully about how you and your loved ones would be impacted financially if you were unable to work for a while. That’s where income protection insurance comes in. If you get sick or injured and can’t work for an extended period, this insurance will provide regular payments to cover your loss of earnings until you get back on your feet. Remember, we can guide you through your options and make sure you have the right types of cover for your business and your family. A Will or a Testamentary Discretionary Trust?

You might wonder why someone would have a testamentary discretionary trust rather than a simple will. A testamentary discretionary trust is a discretionary or family trust created by a will. There are significant advantages in having a discretionary trust included in your will as opposed to having a simple will. Particularly for those with relatively large estates, for those with businesses, for

those who have investments and other assets that they wish to protect for their family, and for those with beneficiaries who have children of their own. The main benefits to be obtained are: • that estate income is able to be paid to child beneficiaries thereby obtaining the benefits of large tax savings for both income and capital gains tax • asset protection in the event of bankruptcies, ‘spendthrift’ beneficiaries, and from family breakdowns • assets can be quarantined from being available to pay debts • Centrelink entitlements can be preserved • the will can be flexible as to who receives the benefits and how much • setting up a fund for the long term welfare of a vulnerable beneficiary • able to pass control of family trusts and SMSF’s The benefits to be obtained must be balanced against the higher costs of implementing a testamentary discretionary trust but there are significant savings to be obtained from such a will and it does not need to be a huge estate for the benefits to be obtained. A will containing a discretionary trust enables the executor trustee to distribute the income among a wider range of beneficiaries, both adult and children, for example grandchildren, in the most tax-effective way. Each child is able to receive income from the trust of up to $18,200 without paying any tax and any income above that is taxed at normal adult rates, so for a family there are significant advantages to be gained by this type of will structure. The tax benefits can be obtained each financial year and for beneficiaries with children they can effectively pay the living and educational expenses for their children out of pre-tax income. Estate assets can include superannuation and life insurance as well as the more obvious assets such as house and shares. An estate can therefore be significant in terms of value and income and it is worth considering whether setting up a testamentary discretionary trust would be more beneficial for your family rather than simply gifting them your estate assets with all the associated potential taxation implications. Don’t panic Mr Mannering!

Recently we completed the fit-out of our business. Initially this was to take 6 months but as life goes, it actually took 11 months. Of course at times it was very challenging but if anything, the delays, the extra hidden costs etc., have given me an opportunity to put into practice what I teach with Yoga and Meditation. Don’t sweat the small stuff (don’t panic Mr Mannering!), take a deep breath or two, be grateful, patient, honest and be kind to myself and others. Sounds simplistic in some ways

but the benefits certainly out way the other option of unraveling under stress. How is your life treating you? Or can I ask, how are you treating your life? Perhaps read this question again. What does it mean to you? Do you allow life to run its course or are you someone that likes to take control of the reins? Do you ever feel like you’re wearing too many hats? Mum, Dad, sister, brother, employee, employer, friend, therapist, superman/woman? Do you place immense pressure on yourself or do you think it comes from other people in and around your life? When I’m out and about talking to people I often hear people say that they’re too busy to exercise, do yoga or meditate, sometimes with a tone that they are actually proud of themselves for being so busy! This is not sustainable long term for physical or mental wellbeing. Sometimes we may try too hard to have it all but something has to give…. generally it will be you! What good are we to anyone if beneath the surface we ourselves are not coping well? Isn’t it better if we do fewer things and do them well, as opposed to spreading ourselves too thin? Perhaps there is an opportunity for you to release the pressure valve and explore practices that support you rather than put yourself under the pump. Maybe today you can let go a few things from your to do list.

Why do cats wee in bad places?

either sneak away or brazenly back up to furniture and “mark” in front of their owners. Arrgh!! The first thing to investigate is if there is a medical problem causing incontinence. Many conditions, ranging from bladder stones, bacterial infections and other local inflammatory conditions can cause pain and irritation and an increased urgency to urinate. Kidney disease and other conditions such as diabetes can cause increased thirst which leads to a constantly full bladder. This may mean that your cat does not make it to the litter tray in time, or that the litter tray becomes full very quickly and he does not want to use it until it is changed. In older cats, arthritis and mobility problems may be an issue, as can age related brain function decline. If medical issues have been ruled out the challenge begins to find a behavioural cause. Cats will “mark” to lay out their territory but inside the home inappropriate urination has more to do with stress, anxiety or frustration. Many owners look at me bewildered when I suggest this – what on earth has their little moggy (who clearly has the very best of everything!) got to be stressed about?? Cats hate changes of routine, whether the normal chaos of a functional family life, or a visitor, or even a new cat moving in next door. They also dislike sharing litter boxes, unclean litter boxes, or in some cases certain types of litter. It will be a trial and error approach to see what may and may not work. Try multiple litter trays, making sure that they are away from the busy part of the house. If you have an old cat make sure that he can get in and out of the tray without difficulty. Try different types of litter and see which one your cat prefers. Thoroughly clean areas where he has wee’d to remove odours (making sure your cleaning products are cat friendly). There are some medications and pheromone sprays available which can help if none of the above measures are successful. In particular we have received a lot of positive feedback about an over-thecounter product called Feline Tranquil Formula, little treats that your cat will line up to eat, which is very successful in solving the wee problem. One final thing - if you see your cat straining to wee or spending a long time in the litter tray with little to show for it he may have a “blockage” THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!! – it is VERY PAINFUL and could be fatal. Bring him in ASAP!!

Anxious Modes of Thinking (cont’d)

The third mode of anxiety thinking is Catastrophic Thinking. Like all the modes, psychologists see this thought process as being: · Automatic - usually triggered by some stimulus, eg., a person, place, event, or even one of our own thoughts; and · Future oriented – something bad is going to happen down the track. Catastrophic thinking is characterised by predicting the future not just negatively, but disastrously. It won’t just be difficult, it will be a catastrophe. Things won’t

just go wrong, they will go spectacularly wrong. “If I go to the party, I won’t just feel uncomfortable, I will have a melt-down”. “I won’t just feel apprehensive in the new role, I’ll feel devastated”. “I won’t just struggle in the exam, I’ll fail miserably”. “If I give that tool-box talk, I’ll make a complete ass of myself in front of everyone”. “The job interview won’t just be challenging, it’ll be a nightmare”. Catastrophic thinking sees us make one of the two basic errors of judgement in anxiety thinking. We overestimate the severity of the problem. We draw unnecessarily harsh conclusions about how bad, how difficult, how terrible something will be. The problem’s severity score of three out of ten becomes an eight out of ten. But here’s the thing. Everyday life is rarely that terrible. When we actually do these feared things, we discover that the activity was not nearly so awful as we had anticipated. “What was I thinking”? is a common refrain after the event. “Even though I had a few butterflies in the tummy and felt a bit apprehensive, I settled down and handled it quite well. I am surprised at myself”. Remember, anxiety is a liar. It is always telling us how bad things will be. We cannot afford to listen to it. Stuart Edser - Counselling Psychologist

TRAVEL Matters by Ian and Sue Roberts

of Memorable Destination www.memorabledestination.com

Increased security: what travellers can expect

In the wake of the latest London and Manchester terror attacks, security has understandably become an even bigger issue for people planning travel. Although neither of these horrific incidents occurred at an airport or onboard a plane, aviation is still right at the forefront of heightened security measures. For example, soon after the latest attacks, increased security was announced for passengers flying direct to Australia from the Middle Eastern airports of Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The new measures, which are being implemented at boarding gates, include random explosive trace

checks on electronic devices, but have stopped short of a complete ban on carrying such devices in cabin luggage - at this stage. A much more strict carry-on ban - on laptops, e-readers, cameras and almost any other electronic device that is not a phone - has been introduced on many flights into the US and U.K. In fact, these are probably the most significant restriction on air travel since liquids of more than 100ml were banned from carry-on luggage. Unfortunately, the selection of certain airports has only increased the inconsistencies from one country to another that have become the bane of a traveller’s life. However, life everywhere changed dramatically after the World Trade Centre attacks in New York City and often-frustrating security checks at airports and elsewhere is just one result. We recommend that travellers keep a close eye on the Australian government’s website smarttraveller.gov. au when travelling and planning a trip. It’s also wise to check the websites of airports that you will be using as well as your airlines. Of course, travellers won’t only encounter heightened security at airports. They should also be prepared for strict checks at other transportation hubs, big shopping centres, tourist attractions and public events.

Some healthy eating hacks

Those who follow this column each month will know that I was pregnant. Well I am happy to let you know that little Oliver is now here and bringing so much joy to my husband Mark and myself. Oliver has also brought quite a few challenges as well. With my husband is now back at work and sleep deprivation kicking in, I have had to get creative to be able to feed myself healthy meals. Some of things I have found helpful that can be used by anyone with a busy lifestyle are….. • For a very quick meal when Oliver just wants to be held and cooking is not an option I have discovered frozen fish and vegetables that you steam in the microwave (not the crumbed fish). Put this together with microwaveable rice and you have a quick and easy meal that is also healthy as well. • Pack all meals with as many vegetables as possible. • Use a slow cooker. I personally get some chuck beef, tinned tomato and liquid beef stock and any vegetables I have in the fridge and chuck it all in. This can often feed us for a couple of nights.

• When you have a bit more time make a big batch of something and freeze it in portion size containers. I have homemade tomato soup in my freezer at the moment which is perfect for a cold winters night. My diet at this point is not perfect but I am doing what I can to look after my health and that is what is important. Life will always present challenges to living a healthy lifestyle but there are ways you can make it happen. You need to make it priority and get a bit creative. High Notes

On Tuesday 16 May, all of our teaching staff stayed back for an extended professional development afternoon, until 7pm, to engage in workshops designed to meet their identified learning needs and to meet the 2015-2017 School Management Plan. Workshops included Mindfulness; HSC HUB on-line learning tool; Growth Mindset Innovation Project; and Individual Learning and Enrichment (iLE) Pretesting and workshops. The development sessions provided teachers opportunities to share and work collaboratively with colleagues and allowed time for staff to develop skills, knowledge and resources to support these initiatives. Based on the work and research of educators at the University of Newcastle’s School of Education (Bowe & Gore, 2011) we have undertaken Round 4 of the Lambton High School QT Round program with a further 12 teachers involved in 2017. We have now had 47 staff engage in the intensive school-based program. It is planned most staff will have completed the program by the end of the next 3 year planning cycle. QT Rounds is based on learning about coding programs, assessment tasks and teaching through objective observations of practice. Key to this is the use of the Quality Teaching Framework to facilitate a common understanding and a common language of productive teaching and learning practices across the school. I would like to acknowledge the great work of Mrs FitzSimons, our Head Teacher Teaching and Learning, and our University partner Dr Dew Miller for the quality of the program delivered over recent weeks. In addition, we just completed the first round of the Walk-through Program for the year. This is a collegial classroom observation program with a focus on student learning, where two teachers observe a snapshot of a lesson and provide feedback and feed forward. It has been developed to align with the Australian Professional Teaching Standards for Teachers and to support a teacher’s Performance and Development Plan (PDP).

JUNIORS in SPORT

Under 8’s meet in local football derby

This month in Little Locals we feature not one but two local teams. The New Lambton and Lambton Under 8’s sides met at Alder Park recently to continue the clubs’ long-standing but friendly rivalry. Always hungry for the ball, both outfits were quick to capitalise on any turnover of possession, turning defense into offense in a flash. The wings especially were used to great effect. Ball movement up field was both swift and precise. More often than not however each team’s goalkeeper was up to the challenge with a safe pair of hands. All in all it was an evenly balanced match with both sides able to take many positives from their effort. At game’s end all that separated the sides was a single goal in each half to the home team. There’s no doubt the game entertained the assembled crowd as shown by the loud cheers and clapping from the sidelines. Congratulations to both sides on a game played in great sporting spirit.

If you would like your local junior sports team featured in ‘Little Locals’ next month ask your coach or team manager to get in touch with Lambton & New Lambton Local on 0455 210 000 or by email: mark@lambtonlocal.com Page 38 > Lambton & New Lambton Local > July 2017

Photos (clockwise from right): The Currawongs talk tactics in a pre-game huddle; Ava competes with Ned and Lynx in the mid-field; Jackson looks to be outnumbered here by Aiden, Sonny, Ned and Jarvis; New Lambton’s Toby has only Jaffas goal-keeper Toby to beat; Referee in training Elijah did a great job officiating the game; Meen steps off his right foot to work his way around Jarvis.
