Some of those submissions included concept drawings on how to incorporate a shared cycle/walking pathway that would avoid pedestrians and cyclists mixing with motor vehicle traffic as they made their way. Newcastle City Council resolved at a meeting in late June this year to “Support cyclists concerns and called on RMS to implement design changes to mitigate the need for cyclists to traverse three additional sets of traffic lights when travelling east / west to / from Wallsend on the off road cycle path.” That too seems to have fallen on deaf ears at RMS. “It’s hard enough to get cycleway infrastructure built in the first place. As it stands this project will take away a cycle path, effectively creating a dead end at Jesmond Park.” said Lambton resident and cyclist Lachlan Wetherall. What’s been happening this month... MMM...CAKE: Lambton Residents Group hosted a community picnic complete with a giant birthday cake recently to mark the Rotunda’s birthday. The grand old icon in Lambton Park was opened 126 years ago on 29th November 1890. The Group plans to hold a community picnic on the last Saturday of November each year as a chance celebrate what’s great about living locally...

Centenary of Great War Honour Roll
The War Memorial gates adjacent to Harker Oval are doubly significant to Denise Sweeney and her family. One of the volunteers honoured on the Roll is James Patrick, Denise’s grandfather. His father William Patrick, Denise’s great grandfather, was a local blacksmith at the time. He supported the building of the Roll of Honour by making the gates. The memorial was unveiled by Mr David Watkins M.H.R., Member for Newcastle, in front of 1,200 people 100 years ago on Saturday 11th November 1916. Quite coincidentally 11th November 1918 would be the date chosen two years
later as Armistice Day, now known as Remembrance Day, to declare an end to the hostilities in the Great War. In his speech as reported by Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner’s Advocate Mr Watkins stated that ‘‘These gates would serve to remind the children of the future of the boys who had enlisted...” Ninety-six volunteers had gone from the town of New Lambton at the time of the unveiling. The Northern Times said in a report on the day that “The iron, marble and stone have been handled with a workmanlike skill that make the gates and pillars worthy of the cause for which they have been used.”

Library amnesty spreads spirit at Christmas
Local Library branches are offering an amnesty on late items in return for donations to help make Christmas a little brighter for less fortunate families this year. Library members will be able to clear unpaid library fines by donating non-perishable food and toiletry items as Christmas presents for needy Newcastle residents. Local emergency relief agencies OzHarvest, Street Care, Baptist Care and the Samaritans will package the goods for families in the lead up to Christmas. Five dollars for every non-perishable food item and $10 for every toiletry item will be cleared from library members’ overdue fines record.
“Food for Five, Toiletries For Ten is an initiative used by public libraries in Australia and across the world”, Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “It provides a chance for community members to give back to the community in time for Christmas and have overdue library fines waived.” Library Manager Suzie Gately said it was the first time Newcastle Region Library had used this initiative. “We look forward to assisting the Newcastle community,” Gately said. “In the lead up to Christmas, November and December is a great time to return any overdue items and also clear unpaid fines.” The Food For Five, Toiletries For Ten initiative runs until Monday 12th December. As a local who regularly uses Jesmond Bushland for mountainbiking, I read the article in the November issue about the “rehabilitation” due to trail damage with interest. Now I’m not saying it wasn’t fair to include the article, that it wasn’t relevant or not factually correct. But.... There is some background information that would perhaps shed some more light on the issues here. Personally I don’t think the mountainbikers should be cutting tracks. When I came to the area in 2011

I contacted council to see if mountainbiking was allowed in Jesmond Bushland, and they said yes, as long as no bush was damaged. As such, I do no trail cutting (don’t have time for that anyway), and stick to the fire trails and existing singletrack (of which there is a lot). There has been a new sign appear in recent days from mountainbikers in the bush reporting that stringlines are being put up by members of the public at neck height to catch bikers (presumably). Obviously this is wrong. They are just as likely to catch runners as well. Also, other than the new tracks cut this year that have created quite a bit of damage, most trail damage is done by (motorised) dirtbikers on thumpers who ride in there when it’s wet (something that most mountainbikers know not to do). Other than that, there have been other significant periods of trail building in there in recent years (particularly the series of tracks in the northwestern corner that were built in 2014) but with no council response. Council’s “rehabilitation” of sprinkling stones around is a joke compared to true bush rehabilitation (new plantings, etc). As such, the designation of the Bushland as a conservation area is also a mystery to me. What with the number of foxes in there and the Rankin Park to Jesmond bypass going in later on (not that I oppose it, but it doesn’t really sit well with the conservation title). Although the article didn’t expressly state this, I’m worried that some people may assume that mountain bikers are not allowed to use the dirt trails at all, which is not the case from what I’ve been told. Catching spirit of Christmas on bus When Newcastle Buses driver Margaret Pannell decorated her bus with a few bits of tinsel and played a cassette of Christmas carols during her work day back in 1997 she was just trying to bring some festive spirit to her passengers. Since that time the Christmas Bus has delighted many thousands of passengers and raised much needed donations for local charity. The Christmas Bus idea has grown to become an annual institution, much loved by young and old. Many local families make a point of finding out when the Christmas Bus will be running on their local route and make an outing of it. Other, unsuspecting passengers, can’t help but smile when a bus fully decorated inside and out swings around the corner and takes them on their journey. Carols in Park on Sunday 18th
Hunter Bible Church is excited to host its annual Christmas Carols and fireworks on Sunday 18th December at Lambton Park. Now in its fourth year, Carols in Lambton Park is a free community event for families with local food vendors, activities and rides for kids and a special visit from the Lambton Fire Service as well as your favourite Christmas carols. Host of the event Pastor Pete Witt said, “A team of volunteers from Hunter Bible Church help to plan and run ‘Carols’, which includes filling over 5,000 welcome bags. Be sure to grab one from the friendly welcomers when you arrive.” Pete also remarked that “Carols in Lambton Park is only possible with the help of local community partners. It’s through the generosity of sponsors and Hunter Bible Church volunteers

Catholic Church life
In 1863, with no church buildings to meet in, the celebration of the first Christmas in Lambton was a private affair. The only public festivities were of a strictly commercial nature when 120 employees of the Lambton colliery gathered for a dinner on Boxing Day to inaugurate the opening of the mine. The Scottish Australian Mining Company however was not unmindful of the spiritual needs of the miners and their families, and in the ensuing years supported the establishment of churches with land grants for the erection of church buildings. By 1870 the Church of England, Presbyterians, Primitive Methodists, Welsh Baptists, English Baptists, and Welsh Independents had buildings in Lambton. The Roman Catholics however, had to travel in to Newcastle to attend church, where the service was held at 11am to allow time to travel in from the suburbs. In 1871 the Catholics erected a small wooden building in De Vitre St, to be used as a school during the week, and as a church on Sundays. The church was solemnly blessed and opened on 19th
by Lachlan Wetherall
November 1871. Two years later the Catholic parish of Lambton was established, stretching from Mayfield to Teralba, and Father James Ryan, a newly ordained Irish priest appointed to the parish. Father Ryan’s labours were soon rewarded, for by 1876 the wooden church in De Vitre St had to be enlarged. With continued growth and an eye to the future, land was acquired in Dickson St in 1892/1893 for a new building, and in 1921 the current brick church of St John the Evangelist was constructed. In New Lambton, St Therese’s began with a building in Royal St in 1926, used for both school and church. New Lambton became a separate parish in 1954, but fifty years later merged back with Lambton and Waratah to form Holy Trinity Parish, Blackbutt North, an ongoing community where Christmas is publicly celebrated as much more than just commerce. Extract from: Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate of Monday 11th December 1876; POST-OFFICE. - Dr. J. J. Hill and Messrs. Dainty and E. Price went to Sydney on Thursday evening as a deputation from the inhabitants of Lambton, with a petition to the Postmaster-General, praying that Mrs. Davis, widow of the late post-master be ap-pointed to the office, and they have, I am glad to say, been successful in their mission, for at about one o’clock on Friday a telegraphic message was received stating that Mrs. Davies had been appointed post-mistress. There was rather sharp practice on the part of those who sought to deprive the widow and orphans of their means of subsistence, but their friends were not far behind, and have luckily been more successful. The result will no doubt be very galling to a few who are interested in the removal of the post-office, but it is, nevertheless, in accordance with the wish and desire of a large majority of the inhabitants. Living in a Strata Scheme
The major difference between owning a house and owning a unit or apartment in a strata scheme (known as a “lot”) is that the external walls, the floor and roof do not usually belong to the “lot owner.” These areas are usually “common property.” All of the lot owners share in the ownership of the common property, and are known as the “Owners Corporation.” The maintenance and repair of the common property is usually the responsibility of the Owners Corporation. As a lot owner, you are not allowed to alter or renovate any part of the common property without the permission of the Owners Corporation. In effect, in most strata schemes, the lot owner owns the inside
of the unit but not the main structure of the building. Usually the four main walls, the ceiling, the roof and the floor are common property. The dividing walls within the lot (for example, the wall between the kitchen and lounge room), floor coverings such as carpet and fixtures such as baths, toilet bowls and benchtops are all the property of the lot owner. The key concept to remember is that the lot owner effectively owns the airspace (and anything included in the airspace) inside the boundary walls, floor and ceiling of the lot. In some cases, airspace can also extend to balconies and courtyards. Owners are required to make a financial contribution known as “levies” usually on a quarterly basis. These levies are to cover the cost of managing the strata scheme, as well as insurance, expenses and ongoing maintenance and repair of common property. Levy amounts can change, and the amount is usually set at the Annual General Meeting of the Owners Corporation. Before buying a unit or apartment, you should find out more about the strata scheme. Things such as (but not limited to) the financial status of the scheme, what restrictions or “by-laws” are in place for the scheme, and the amount of the levies that you will be required to pay once you become an owner.

Heartburn
Most of us at some in our lives will experience heartburn – after a big meal, undertaking strenuous activity too soon after eating and drinking too much. So heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux or indigestion) is really very common. Heartburn is caused by the contents of the stomach coming back up into the oesophagus where it can cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered to be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems. People of all ages can have GORD.
Occasional heartburn on the other hand is what we can get from eating too much, from anxiety and advanced pregnancy – to name but a few of the causes. Heartburn is also one of the symptoms of peptic ulcer; but more usually it is GORD. Remember that GORD is a chronic illness, like asthma or high blood pressure, and like those diseases, ongoing treatment is usually necessary. Reflux occurs when what goes down the oesophagus – that is the “food pipe” to the stomach – comes back up again to where it’s not meant to be. And it comes back up again mixed with stomach acid and other chemicals. So it’s not surprising that the regurgitation or backwash of swallowed food causes a burning feeling. It’s generally described by reflux sufferers as beginning in the stomach or lower chest and moving upwards behind the breastbone towards the neck or throat. Turn the mind to Hypnosis
One of the most powerful tools in my psychological toolkit is clinical hypnosis or “hypnotherapy.” I use a variety of hypnotic techniques with my clients every week for relaxation, habit-breaking or symptom relief. Clinical hypnosis comes in three different forms or modalities. The first of these is Deep Relaxation. This brings about a deeply relaxed state in the body. It concentrates on the physical more than the mind and is favoured by people struggling with anxiety, the effects of chronic stress or pain syndromes. Allowing the body to move into what Herbert Benson MD called the ‘relaxation response’ is a beneficial way to turn off the ‘stress response’ and allow the person to effect change. The second type is Mindfulness Meditation. This form teaches people to be fully present when they are doing something. It does not focus on the body but what are we are doing with our thoughts. It is actually the opposite of distraction. When you do something mindfully, whether it be breathing, listening, eating an orange, drinking a cuppa, or walking or jogging, you bring your full attention to that act, and maintain your concentration as long as you can. You can (and should) learn how to practice mindfulness techniques for your own benefit. The third form is self-hypnosis. In fact, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Here, a deeply relaxed state is combined with positive therapeutic suggestions to bring about personal change. This is nothing like the “stage hypnosis” of Hollywood movies where people ‘appear’ to lose control of their willpower. In fact, self-hypnosis enhances will-power by augmenting the power of personal choice. Changes can be subtle but powerful. Each of these modalities has the common goal of bringing about a positive change, and are worth investigating -Stuart Edser

I always give out advice at Christmas about limiting the food and drink being consumed and to fit in more exercise but realistically a lot of people won’t take on that advice. If this sounds like you, then here a few ways to easily fit more physical activity into your silly season to watch that waist line. • Instead of spending ages looking for a park close to the shops, park further away so you have to walk. Also opt for the stairs rather than the lifts or elevators. With the combination of the steps you will build up walking around the shopping centre you will be shocked at how quickly your physical activity adds up. • Spend some quality family time going for a walk and checking out the Christmas lights around your neighbourhood. • Incorporate physical activities into your social gatherings. At my husband’s family Boxing Day get together there is always a game of cricket. Not only does it start burning off some of the calories we eat, it is a fun way for all the generations of the family to bond and enjoy each other’s company • Christmas in Australia means we have amazing weather and the sun stays up late. Take advantage of this. Go to the beach, go for a bush walk or enjoy one of our beautiful local parks by going for a walk or take the kids to the playground. I know realistically you will probably eat too much and drink a lot too but the more physical you are the more you will counteract this. My final and most important piece of advice to keep it real is to remember Christmas is about spending time with family and friends and creating memories with them. The festive season is upon us and most of us are preparing for Christmas and the New Year. Holidays are booked and the relatives are set to arrive. Where do our pets fit into all of this chaos? The holidays can be exciting but also stressful for our pets. People, food, fireworks and more can all unsettle our pets and even result in sickness or injury. So what can we do to help our pets get through this busy time safely? Firstly, making sure vaccinations are up to date. All boarding facilities require your pets to be vaccinated to keep all of their other guests safe from disease. If your pet is not up to date they may be required to have a booster shot 1-2 weeks before going into boarding. Please check this with your boarding facility so you can plan appropriately ahead of time. Many of the foods we enjoy over the holidays are not healthy for out pets and some can cause serious illness. Chocolate and nuts are common culprits but did you know that fatty table scraps like left over ham can cause pancreatitis. Ask well-meaning guests to refrain from giving any unapproved treats to help avoid a costly trip to the Emergency Centre. Fireworks are common at this time of year. This can be a huge cause of stress for our pets, especially dogs. Making sure pets are secure in the yard or house and are in a comfortable safe area can help your pet feel comfortable. NEIGHBOUR AID SOCIAL SUPPORT We offer companionship to those over 65 years, transport to appointments, assistance with shopping, social interaction, activities and lunch at our centres.
