Sigma Lambda Gamma strives to be the premier organization committed to providing a mechanism of empowerment to all women
Letter from the Board Greetings Sisters!
We are so thrilled to have our National newsletter, La Mensajera, back in action and we would like to thank those sisters who are volunteering their time to make this happen. La Mensajera is a vital communication piece that allows us to share information with one another and to celebrate the great accomplishments of our sisters, entities, and organization. Without the input and article submissions from our sisterhood, this newsletter will not be able to flourish. As a result, please consider submitting articles and sharing your opinions with the rest of the sisterhood. Perhaps you’re working on research that could educate other women or maybe you recently came across a topic that could help advance women’s issues. This is your opportunity to speak your mind – let’s hear what you have to say!
“La Mensajera is a vital communication piece that allows us to share information with one another...”
As your National Board of Directors (NBOD), it is our privilege to serve you. We are currently half-way through our term and are so proud of what we have been able to accomplish. The previous year alone has been quite a learning experience, but we are humbled by the impact we have been able to make and the direction our sorority is headed!
Program; this initiative also encompasses many areas of improvement for the sorority. The main purpose of this initiative is simple: to better our organization in all areas including database and manual management; policy and procedure development; communication advancement; and resource support in the areas of entity management, academic success, leadership development, and the like. It is our sincerest hope that as we embark on the remaining year, we continue to have the support from all of our members. We encourage each member to get involved in this initiative; ask questions if uncertain and provide feedback and input wherever possible. The success of this initiative is dependent on all of our members embracing change for the future. It is the combined efforts of our sisterhood in fulfilling our mission and purpose that will take us through the next 20 years and more. At times it is easy to forget why we decided to join Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority. However, take a moment to reflect on your decision (however long ago) and remember that with becoming a sister you made a lifelong commitment to uphold the standards of a Gamma woman. We are women who blaze a trail. We are women who strive for excellence. We are women who are philanthropic. But, most importantly, we are women of distinction.
“We are women who blaze a trail. We are women who strive for excellence.”
Our sorority initiative, Catalyst for Change, is well under way and we are extremely optimistic of the positive changes our organization is undergoing. The Headquarters staff, our amazing volunteer leaders, the Education Foundation, and your NBOD are dedicated to the betterment of our organization through this initiative. It is important to remember that Catalyst for Change is not solely about the revised Associate Member Education
We wish you all the best for the Fall semester! Please do not hesitate to contact us at NBOD@SigmaLambdaGamma.com if you should have any questions or concerns. We would love to hear from you. La Mensajera Fall 2011

Why are you excited about bringing back La Mensajera? La Mensajera represents a part of our sorority’s history that allows us to celebrate and reflect on the things that affect our sorority. Sigma Lambda Gamma strives to be the premier organization committed to providing a mechanism of empowerment to all women
Philanthropy
October was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and an active month for our Sorority’s entities across the country. Sigma Lambda Gamma and its member groups actively support the important societal issue of Breast Cancer Awareness. Our support of this cause comes in various avenues: from fundraising campaigns; educational workshops to create awareness; active participation in run/walk events; volunteer participation with organizations; or a combination of these forms. The two primary programs our organization supports in respects to breast cancer awareness include, but are not limited to: Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization.
Facts About Breast Cancer
•A person’s age, genetic factors, diet, and personal health history can all contribute to the level of breast cancer risk in an individual. •Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. after skin cancer. •1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. •The majority of breast cancer cases are sporadic. Most cases don’t involve a direct family history of the disease. •A woman’s risk for getting breast cancer increases with age. •White women are more likely to get breast cancer than women of any other racial or ethnic group •African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than white women •Men can get breast cancer too. Out of every 100 breast cancer cases one of them will occur in a man. •The five year survival rate for breast cancer is 90%, meaning that every 90 out of 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive for five years. When breast cancer is detected in the early stages, the five year survival rate is 98%.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
•A mass or lump in the breast that may be as small as a pea •A change in the size or contour of the breast •Discharge from the nipple (blood-stained or clear) •A change in appearance or feel of the skin on the breast or around the nipple (dimpled, scaly, puckered, inflamed) •Redness of the skin on the breast or around the nipple •A change in the position of the nipple
A Woman’s Best Defenses Against Breast Cancer
•Starting at age 40, every woman should have an annual mammogram. Women over 20 should have their breasts examined by a health care provider every three years. Experts don’t seem to agree on the age mammograms should start, so your best bet is to consult your physician. •Maintain a healthy body weight •Minimize or avoid alcohol •Consume as many fruits and vegetables as possible (especially broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, collard greens) •Exercise regularly for the rest of your life. Women should aim for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Consistency, as opposed to intensity, is most important. •Maintain a positive mental outlook. Women should develop and nurture relationships with both family and friends, get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and participate in activities that nurture the “self.”
How Your Donations Help
•Transportation assistance to and from treatment •Free lodging for those having to travel far for treatment •Free wigs and assistance with treatment-related physical side effects •Emotional support programs like Reach To Recovery that connect newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with survivors •Cancer education classes such as I Can Cope •An online support network called Cancer Survivors Network •Funding research into breast-conserving surgery, using lumpectomy plus radiation for treatment •Discovering lifesaving treatments (such as Herceptin) to improve breast cancer survival and drugs (such as Tamoxifen) to reduce the risk of second or first breast cancer •Discovering genes for inherited breast and colon cancer •Confirming the knowledge that genetics, diet, lack of exercise, and alcohol abuse can increase a person’s cancer risk •And more…

As the economy continues to worsen and unemployment rates soar, many women are starting to neglect pampering themselves. It makes sense because beauty and fashion does tend to come secondary when we have more pressing issues like putting food on the table to tend to. Just cosmetics and hair products alone can carry a hefty price-tag when you want the best of the best. Luckily, it is possible to look and feel beautiful even during hard times. You just have to find alternative ways to fit it into your budget. That’s where I come in.
I have dedicated a portion of my life to helping women (and men) like you become “Bombshells on a Budget.” After all, you deserve it for putting up with the mess you encounter in the world each day. Check out these four toprated websites that will help you do just that. Get your sexy back, Sister!

It gives regular women like you and me the opportunity to dress like our favorite celebrities without having what I call “the celebrity money”. Created by a team of experts that wanted to provide affordable products with the highest possible quality, e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) Cosmetics has made a huge splash in the world of beauty. Their first line, appropriately called “e.l.f. Essentials” has everything you need from foundation to lipstick to brushes and makeup removers. Here’s the kicker: EVERY single product is only $1. The quality isn’t half bad either. I mainly use all e.l.f. cosmetics and have never had a bad experience. A few of their products, like their eyelash glue, could use a little work, but overall it’s a great alternative to more expensive brands. They also have two other lines of studio and mineral makeup as well. The products in those lines are a bit pricier than $1, but are still GREAT deals. They usually run awesome sales on their website as well. I purchased an entire order for 75 percent off last Black Friday. Their products can also be found in select Target and Dollar Tree stores.

A Gamma’s View of Injustice Sister Jilisa Milton
I am a Gamma at the University of Alabama majoring in Social Work. Growing up in Alabama, I never really thought about public policies, and how they affected me. But as I grew older, I realized that policy has always been a growing issue in our state, which has not only had an elaborate history of oppression, but also an amazing history of advocacy and civil rights. I became a Gamma in Fall 2008, and about a year later, decided that Social Services was the career that I wanted to pursue. Little did I know that becoming a member of this helping profession would send me into an eye-opening world where I would learn about public policy, and be put into a position where it was my constant duty to advocate when oppressive policies reared their ugly heads. On June 9, 2011, the governor of Alabama signed the “Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act” or HB56 (Inspired by Arizona’s SB1070) which is now referred to as the “The Harshest State-level, Antiimmigrant Measure to Date”. The bill aims to solve what the state deems as a problem: undocumented immigrants or “those unlawfully present.” To me, the bill obstructs the progress of issues such as family separation, racial profiling and retributive justice (punishment should fit the crime).
immigration status “upon any lawful stop, detention, or arrest.” •Criminalizes “harboring” and “transporting” any undocumented immigrant while “knowing or recklessly disregarding” the fact that “the alien has come to, has entered, or remains in the United States in violation of federal law.” Yes, this includes friends/family: You would receive a Class A misdemeanor for typical cases such as this and class C felonies for more than ten people. This includes trips to the grocery store, trips to church, the hospital, etc. I do understand that immigration is a huge issue in our country. This law affects the undocumented immigrants in my state, and it creates a blueprint for constant racial profiling, unfair arrests and family disruptions of our citizens. The dehumanization of people is not the way to solve a problem. As Gammas, please remember that we do have power: Our voice! On our campus there was a forum about the HB56 issue. I was on the panel discussing topics with our students, faculty, and community, as well as spreading the word about the rallying and lobbying needed to create change. My chapter supported the event, and recognized that there are moral issues that we do have a right to speak about. You may not be supportive of movements such as this, but I urge every sister to be aware of unfair laws in your state, and use your pride and valor to create change! Hermanas Por Vida! •Undocumented immigrants who enter into any kind of contract will not be able to have the contract enforced because of their immigration status (including rentals, drivers license, jobs, etc). •Primary and secondary schools will be required to verify the immigration status of students and parents. •Promotes obstructing lawful access to public benefits. •Requires law enforcement officers to verify

Sigma Lambda Gamma strives to be the premier organization committed to providing a mechanism of empowerment to all women
From Super Gamma to Career Lady Sister Christine Traufler
As a sister from Alpha Chapter, I have had many great opportunities to not only serve Sigma Lambda Gamma as an undergraduate member but also as the first Student Intern at Headquarters. It appears that my main focus during undergrad was being the best Gamma. This included upholding my duties in leadership positions such as, VP of Marketing, New Member Educator, Assistant New Member Educator, and Public Relations Committee Member. Along with leadership positions, I found myself volunteering to organize sisterhood gatherings, develop sisterhood enhancement activities, and participating in any programming done at HQ. All these tasks along with working towards my Bachelor’s in Nursing, earned me the name “Super Gamma” by my chapter (which I take much pride in.)
Registered Nurse Exam (NCLEX), I feel bored and empty. It was almost depressing to graduate and have to leave my chapter and allow them to continue to grow and progress without me. I found it hard to not over involve myself and not be the “Super Gamma” that I was. As the months passed and I watched my chapter sisters grow and continue on the legacy that I was so actively involved with, I realized that the crown I wore as the “Super Gamma” wasn’t put to rest once I graduated. I took that crown and applied it to my career. All the qualities I developed by being heavily involved with the sorority created the work ethic I needed to complete the nursing program at the University of Iowa and receive my license as a Registered Nurse. The sorority has really provided me with a mechanism of empowerment with the leadership opportunities and programming experiences. Now I have a Federal Government Job at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center working on a surgical floor.

I have learned that Sigma Lambda Gamma is not only a sorority, but a way of life. If we, as sisters, truly live by the principles and the sorority’s rituals on a daily basis, the “Super Gamma” in all of us will only assist us with achieving success in our careers, families, and personal endeavors.

A Gamma’s Life Abroad: China Sister Melissa Garcia
the classroom every day my students faces would light up with excitement because they were ready to learn. I climbed many mountains, visited many Buddhist temples, ate tons of street food and danced traditional dances in the streets, but I also had my share of homesickness, being lost in the middle of nowhere and being rejected just because I was an American. It was a part of me being aware of a whole new culture that made me open my mind more to the things outside of American culture.
In the fall of 2009, my school gave me the option to take a modern language class as a general requirement. Being a native Spanish speaker, I could have easily chosen to take Spanish to make it easier on myself, but then I thought what it would be like to be tri-lingual. When my advisor told me about the Chinese program, I was scared out of my mind to try to learn such a difficult language, but of course I couldn’t be sure if I didn’t try.
Comparing Chinese life to American life became a part of my everyday routine. I learned to appreciate all the things I have — things like clean water, real toilets and a mattress. I bonded with so many amazing people who were very important people in the towns I worked in. I chose to not be afraid of a new experience and chose to feed my desire to be culturally aware. Because of that, I am now tri-lingual in Spanish, Chinese and English. And I learned about the history of China.
“My trip to China was an experience that was unforgettable and taught me the true value of cultural awareness.”
By my sophomore year my Chinese skills went from 0 to 70% fluency. Before I knew it I was given the opportunity to teach English in China for a summer. My trip to China was an experience that was unforgettable and taught me the true value of cultural awareness. Instead of soaking up the sun along the beautiful Oak Street beach in Chicago, I spent my summer in the country side on the south of Hunan, China, where clean water was absent from their grasp; scorching heat, squatter toilets, no English speaking and beds made of bamboo mats were present It was not until I sat on the Great Wall of China that I realized ‘Wow! I am really here.’
My experience in China helped me to realize that I would love to get into the profession of arts education as well as keeping my skills in Chinese language. China will always have a very special in my heart. I was glad to have so much support from all of my friends, but especially my hermanas!
In China I taught elementary and middle school English in two different schools. Walking through

A Gamma’s Life Abroad: Costa Rica Sister Georgia Alexander
This past summer I was privileged enough to take part in a program that went above and beyond the typical study abroad experience. As a graduate student, my study abroad financial assistance options were limited, so I began to look for programs outside of my University. Through hours of searching, I found an organization, ProWorld, that not only offered study abroad options, but internships and volunteering abroad as well. ProWorld offers opportunities such as these in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa and continues to expand the countries they assist every year. For the purpose of improving my Spanish and gaining experience for my Master’s degree, I chose a volunteer abroad option in San Jose, Costa Rica that would also include short Spanish lessons through the Costa Rican Language Academy. The program set me up with a host family who lived close to the school, and my volunteer assignment was with Fundacion Rahab, a well-known Costa Rican organization. Fundacion Rahab was established by one woman in a small office in San Jose in 1997 with the purpose of helping women victimized by the sex trade escape their predicament and achieve better lives for themselves and their children. As more women sought out the organization’s help, the organization’s now worldly known and recognized founder Mariliana Morales Berríos, sought out a bigger location and more volunteers to assist in her mission.
old were left with two volunteers and me, as well as the two paid employees who manage the nursery. The children were far more mature than any other children I have worked with at that age, and looked after one another very protectively, especially when new volunteers would come to the nursery. Although the language barrier was sometimes difficult, a nursery employee, who had once been a victim of the sex trade industry, explained that many of the children would only be able to eat if their mother took them to the foundation. She herself had sought help after becoming pregnant with her third child, and admitted that working with the children was difficult because it was never guaranteed they would return to the organization. The organization itself is currently seeking grants and funding to expand its goals to opening another center in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Chile. All the centers will have the goal of helping those women and children who have been victimized by prostitution and sex trafficking.
“My volunteer assignment was with Fundacion Rahab, a well-known Costa Rican organization.”
Prostitution is legal in Costa Rica, making it a huge industry with many consequences for its participants. Currently the organization has helped 500 women and their children escape the sex trade industry by offering individual and group counseling, English lessons, and skills building courses in cooking, baking, sewing, and computers. The organization also offers childcare to the women while they are participating in these services. During my time with the organization, I mostly volunteered in the nursery. Each day, anywhere from two to 16 children, ages six months to nine years

The Alumnae Experience Sister Sandy Ng
Without much knowledge of Greek Life, I figured after graduation that I would not be given another opportunity to be a part of a sorority. However, the New York City Alumnae Association opened doors to some of my personal goals after graduation. My name is Sandy Ng and this upcoming December will mark my one year anniversary as sister of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. Although it has been quite some time I still feel fairly new and that I have a lot to learn. Although I would have liked to join while I was an undergraduate, my alumnae experience has been rewarding. I was interested in joining a sorority even before starting college. I never found the right fit until further researching. I like the idea of a sisterhood, networking, and giving back. Everything about the sisterhood was positive. From the moment I joined I was involved in event planning, meetings, supporting undergraduate chapters and always being active. I love how we constantly strive to commit to our five principles in our personal lives and especially when it comes to event planning.
alumnae sister I feel it is important to set examples and to show support. My most memorable experience with the New York City Alumnae Association was gift exchanging during the holidays. You are never too old to play “Secret Santa.” Another favorite memory was getting involved with New York Cares Day. We cleaned up an abandoned park in the lower east side of Manhattan. I didn’t like getting dirty, I don’t like dirt and weeds, but I ended up having such a good time with my sisters and I didn’t have a problem breaking down tree branches and picking up garbage. As long as I contributed my part and helped better my community I was happy.
“The association just showed me that we’re never too young or too old to be part of Sigma Lambda Gamma and continue to incorporate the five principles in our lives.”
I’m continuing to learn everyday how a business functions. We are constantly working everyday to reach goals within the sorority. I have a full-time job working over 40 hours a week. I didn’t expect to be able to be so involved in the association with the other women. I am finding that I am able to attend our monthly meetings, bonding events, and undergraduate functions as well. As an

Step, Step, Step By Step Sister Mindy Peral
I found out something I never knew about stepping: Stepping is an art form of expression that involves everyone and anyone who encounters it. It is not owned by a race or a culture — it is a freedom of expression that has a story. On Oct. 8, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., Psi Chapter at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN., stepped for the first time in a number of years. The story: Six Greek organizations on campus came together to perform a step show benefitting St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The groups that participated in the step show were fraternities Kappa Alpha Psi and Lambda Upsilon Lambda and sororities Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Sigma Lambda Gamma and Theta Nu Xi. The chapters would incorporate the struggles and emotions of children at St. Jude’s into routines through the dance steps. Each sorority was taught a routine from the two fraternity members. The opportunity to collaborate with the other Greek councils on campus was amazing. It not only brought close relationships, it shined the light of what Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. is all about. As the chapter advisor, I am so proud of the Psi Chapter members who learned to step for the first time, showing their dedication to promote community service and social interaction. Kudos to Jessica ‘Aguara’ Rizzi, Vanessa ‘Conquistadora’ Gee, Celestine ‘Estrella’ Perez and Heather ‘Presiosa’ Coleman.
“Stepping is an art form of expression that involves everyone...”
I also found out how amazing Greek unity is! Having Greeks coming from all different sorts of chapters, building relationships around chapter boundaries and sharing interests in something as fun as stepping was priceless! Link: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ezYPM980t14

Last semester Sigma Beta dedicated their entire Gamma Week to the sorority’s philanthropy. The week was called “All Pink Everything.” The events that were hosted throughout the week were: - Splash of Pink: pool party -Check Yo’self: Women’s health seminar -Never Lose Hope: Vigil -Sister Community Service -Strolling for a Cure: Greek stroll show -Cake Cutting Each of the events not only incorporated our philanthropy, but each workshop was directly dedicated to each of the sorority’s principles. A local oncologist, Dr. Cox, who specializes in breast cancer was the speaker for the health seminar. A candle light vigil was hosted for all of those who have been affected in some way by breast cancer. The chapter sold breast cancer items and at the end of Gamma Week they donated all of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This was a truly an inspirational week of events that embodies everything our organization stands for!
The active Sisters of my chapter, the PerseverinG Pi Gamma chapter of Miami University of Ohio, have recently created a new website. The address for our entity is: http://www.wix.com/tangw6/main and it is phenomenal! It is such a great representation of our chapter and as an alumna, it helps me stay updated with the chapter’s progress. I am extremely proud of these inspirational women of distinction!

Sister Lucy Duran For Principle Day, September 17, 2011, we volunteered at the Houston Food Bank. We volunteered in their kitchen location and prepared a total of 2,553 meals. We were joined at this event by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. It was a great way to interact with their organization and to uphold our community service principle.

Sister Brittney Knox
The ladies of the BreathTaking Tau Gamma chapter hosted several events throughout the week of April 4-7 to promote cultural diversity, community service, social interaction and a host of other things. The week was uniquely themed “GammaCeption,” which was used to gain students attention as it related to the movie, “Inception.” The purpose of the title is to hopefully allow the ideals the Gammas promoted with this week to leave a positive impression on students. “The week began with a donation table on Monday in the Ferguson Student Center from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to accept donations for Books for Soldiers, a campaign that sends books, magazines, toiletries and other needs to troops overseas,” Michelle Doherty, Vice President of Tau Gamma said. On Wednesday, a very successful event was held in 360 Ferguson in the forum room at 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the International Justice Mission to spread awareness about the issue of human trafficking.
“This event was such a success because this issue touches the hearts of a lot of people,” Brittney Knox, president of the Tau Gamma chapter said. “We were able to hear the story of a woman who took in two children who were victims of human trafficking.” The ladies of Tau Gamma decided to host a forum on this topic to promote awareness about moral and ethical issues. The Gammas ended the week with their Annual Founder’s Day Cookout at Riverside Pool from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Entity Spotlights Phi Gamma Sister Una Bilic
One of sisters of the Phi Gamma chapter was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2008, and ever since then the chapter has made it their special mission to aid in any way possible to find a cure. On behalf of the sister they started “Majestic Light,” an annual banquet which raises awareness and funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event starts with a dinner and entertainment portion, followed by dessert and a candle light remembrance at the campus’ fountain. In the past this event has been co-hosted with Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and also previously with Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The sorority principle of Cultural Awareness was incorporated by using the Moroccan theme for décor, food and entertainment. This coming year the theme will reflect the Asian culture and will be co-hosted with the Chinese Club in collaboration with the Asian Student Union and the Japan Club to provide all the cultural touches that will be needed to make this event a success. “Majestic Light” will be held this year in the Graham Center room 243 at p.m. at Florida International University. If any South Florida sisters would like to attend, tickets are $5 dollars pre-sale and $7 at the door. Please contact any Phi Gamma sisters for more information. If you would like to help with raising money for the cause, please visit the following link: http://pages.lightthenight.org/sfl/Huizenga11/tari’kina In the past the chapter has raised close to $1500, that goes directly back to the affected individuals and not into research funds. The money is turned in when the chapter participates in the, “Light the Night,” an awareness/fundraising walk that the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society put together.

This year the sisters will be walking on November 12, 2011. If any sister in the South Florida area would like to come walk in support of our fellow survivor, Sister Lyzbeth Armenteros, please contact the Phi Gamma Chapter at FIU. (President- Marlynn Lopez; mlope079@fiu.edu, 954-464-1906).

SUNY New Paltz Colony & the Northeast Region Sister Lindsay Perez
September 17 was our national Principle Day in which we conduct some sort of community service, however, this year it was the same day that the Notorious Northeast had its regional retreat. For me, it was an enlightening and memorable experience for a few reasons. For one, it was the first time I ever attended a regional retreat, second we have a new Regional Director, Sister Jenifer ‘Reva’ Olivo, and third Assistant Executive Director, Sister Vanessa Jimenez was also making an appearance. If that wasn’t a good enough reason to be nervous/excited/anxious all at the same time we would also be discussing a variety of topics including the topic of the revised AMEP, which did not go as smoothly as hoped for at retreat. After an extremely long day discussing everything from the progress of the Catalyst for Change initiative, to ideas we could bring to our entities, to even issues that are occurring within our own entities, we reminded each other and ourselves why we love each other and our organization so much. The term ‘notorious’ is often described as “publicly or generally known, as for a particular trait.” One trait that I see in our region is the sense of family and support we have for each other, whether we have been in the game since 2002 or just came into
GammaLand this past year. I hope we continue to pass this trait on to future sisters and hope this is a characteristic that is seen and felt in every other region as well! Special shout-outs to the Theta Gamma Chapter, SUNY Binghamton who hosted the event and opened their homes to us, our new Regional Director who did an amazing job and will continue to do so, and Sister Vanessa Jimenez for helping create the positive experience we all had! Hope you can make another appearance! Lastly, I want to say that we are the No, No, No, Notorious Northeast! And we are welcoming everyone to make an appearance in our region if you haven’t already done so! Want to share news or an accomplishment about your entity? Want to recognize an outstanding alumna or undergrad? Email us to see them in our entity/member spotlights! Send your nominations to Mensajera@ SigmaLambdaGamma.com Next issue: April 2012

Creative I’m That Girl
Sister Samantha Alexander You act white Yeah that’s me I’m that skater chick that likes to kick-push when I’m fed up And coast away my problems, riding the asphalt waves of this concrete jungle I like to rock out with my Vans on that look like sneakers And I like N.E.R.D. more than Kanye because they’re so right Nobody Ever Really Dies My words will live on past the paper and my pen Because I tattoo the existence of my emotions on your cerebrum Yeah, I surf, just not the “swaggin’” variety No, I’m not an Oreo I’ve never thought of myself as a chocolate sandwich cookie But if I must be broken down into such base terms Think of me as a chocolate covered rainbow, a mixture of many colors Kit-Kat chocolate mind you, not Crunch bar chocolate Just wanted to clear that up Are you trying to be Mexican? Yeah, that’s me Pero soy ecuatoriana, claro que si Waking to the howls de los monos outside my door Hablo español, e inglés And I love them both ¡Ay dios mio! Yeah, that’s me, I’m that girl I speak as I was taught and am the antithesis of the ignorance of your assumptions. The lexicon of my repertoire is the epitome of hyperbole Reaching far above the vulgarity of the vernacular My circumlocution will take you on a circumnavigation of my mind You will ride the seas of my thoughts And drown in the depths of my vision The wild apparitions captured by the power of my pen Are you being Asian today? Yeah, I’m that girl I watch Korean soap operas all day I eat sushi more than soul food I crave ramen like a crack fiend needing that one last hit And when it comes to downing sake then you know I’m the shit I’m that Asian sensation With the karate persuasion I have my white on rice groupies Cuz my flow’s an invasion Like Attila the Hun, I’m taking over the nation Are you just a black girl? Yeah, I’m that girl Although I’m not “just” anything Yes, I’m black, no I am not African-American Yes, I’m a Christian, maybe even Republican No, I didn’t grow up in the projects Yes, I’m an inner-city youth No, I don’t support affirmative action Yes, I hate racism and discrimination I may be a conundrum, but I’m speaking the truth I can’t teach you how to Dougie I have no clue what a ‘dougie’ is… No I can’t teach you Ebonics Yes, I’m a marine biologist; no I’m not a Marine
Yes I’m in a sorority; no it’s not historically black My founders had forethought to see multiculturalism far beyond that So who am I you ask? I’m that girl Yeah, that’s me The one that is more than this flesh and bone The one that exceeds your expectations The one that learned a valuable lesson That I’m tired of living in your box I’m tired of explaining myself to you so that you can sleep at night I don’t need to try to categorize myself for you You can handle that well enough on your own But it looks like you’re running out of pigeonholes to squeeze me into So you might wanna hit up that container store If you wanna keep up with me Because despite all the rumors, I’m only ridiculously awesome And nothing more…Certainly nothing less I am not these micrometers of melanin Limited in life by my skin pigmentation So if you really must ask if all this stuff is really me I’ll look you in the eye and say Yeah, I’m that girl Write poetry? Our committee formed in July, put out a call for submissions in
August and released La Mensajera in November. It has been a pleasure working with them thus far and I am looking forward to future issues with the committee.
