I am Janet and I am your resident Positive Change Coach bringing you techniques and insights to help you navigate the changes in your life positively. I have 15 years experience and now work globally from Costa Rica to New Zealand and everywhere in-between.

My first foray into the world of personal development was joining a Yoga class. Yoga became the hour in the week that kept me sane. Yoga is so much more than exercise. It creates balance in the emotions and the mind via balancing the body. We practice everything on both sides in both directions.

We have a left and right brain with completely different roles – left for logic, right for romance. The left brain keeps us grounded, maintains our filing cabinet of facts and our diary. The right brain is our imagination, our creative side whether that is new ideas or problem solving, it gives us our emotions. We need both to function, should we loose our left brain function then right brain has free reign to imagine the impossible, it removes restriction, place your hand on a wall and you will no longer see a hand and a wall but a wonderful merging of both, you would place your hand in a fire as you don’t know it will burn you. Remove the right brain function and we live life in a very limited way, facts but no feelings.

Through yoga we can synchronise left and right brain so we can balance facts with feelings.

I teach DRU Yoga – DRU in Sanskrit (the language of yoga) means “Still Point”, through the flow of the movement we find the stillness within. DRU is a combination of classic yoga postures with the flow of T’ai Chi. We work with the body rather than against it. DRU is soft, gentle and flowing, we take our time, really connect with our bodies.

A DRU Yoga class begins with a warm up, then we perform an “Energy Block Release Sequence”. As the name implies, this is a series of movements to start to unblock the tension in the body. The sequences vary in content and length, I like to theme my classes so we are working to an overall goal to the completion of the class.

We then do some preparation stretches and then the postures, a breathing exercise and complete with Relaxation/Meditation.

“DRU is soft, gentle and flowing, we take our time, really connect with our bodies”

Many people are reluctant to join a yoga class as “I am not bendy enough”, “I am too fat/old/stiff”, “I will look stupid”, “I will hold up the rest of the class up”. I hear all these on a regular basis. I have spent most of my life teaching adults 16 – 90 in further and higher education. Do you join a language class if you can already speak the language? You come to a class to learn. Yoga is not a competition, you will find some things easier than others. We are all working towards – including me! And when you achieve something for the first time, we celebrate that achievement. DRU is a very accessible form of yoga and I give students ways of adapting the postures to suit their needs. Joining a yoga class will change your life for the better – go for it!

This is a milestone year for the Dukes and we are so pleased to be sharing it with our team, volunteers, audiences, artists and community. The Dukes has been at the heart of Lancaster since 1971 as both a theatre and independent cinema and has achieved so much since then. We are so proud of the Dukes’ legacy and thank everyone who has been part of the journey so far. We are so excited for the future and we look forward to creating more memories, creative projects and continuing to be part of what makes Lancaster a great place to visit or call home.
