Abu Camp is set in the heart of the Okavango Delta and boasts fi ve luxurious AfroBedouin-style tents each set on an elevated teak deck. The essence of the camp is the elephant herd now numbering seven adults, one sub-adult and three calves. Guests can immerse themselves in the herd for three nights and become at one with the largest land mammal. Activities include riding atop these huge beasts, taking a walk with these gentle giants and watching them interact with each other and their calves. There are three main features of the Linyanti Concession: the Linyanti River, the woodlands of the interior and the well-known Savute Channel, famous as a sporadic and unusual watercourse. Between 1980 and 2008 the channel ceased to flow and Savuti Camp overlooked open grassland. During 2008, the Savute Channel once more began to flow, creating a water source that rapidly filled with aquatic life, wide varieties of waterbirds and hippo. This in turn attracted one of the highest dry season concentrations of elephant in the country, roan and other antelope and their attendant predators – lion, cheetah and wild dog.
Selinda Camp is located in the Selinda Reserve, a private wildlife concession of some 300,000 acres in northern Botswana. Selinda Camp is a small, wonderful, luxury tented safari camp situated on the banks of the eastern Selinda Spillway, a waterway that links Botswana’s Okavango Delta to the Linyanti and Kwando rivers and floodplains.
This intimate camp has en-suite accommodation with seven large walk-in tents and one family room. From the camp’s thatched dining area, a plunge pool and large viewing area extends outwards on raised wooden decks. Guests can explore the channel on day and night game drives. There are nature walks (on request) and several well positioned hides for safe, up-close animal viewing.
The shaded camp is raised off the ground and offers extraordinary views over the floodplains and open savannas, broken only by attractive palm islands. These views are among the camp’s most compelling features. Guests can sit on their verandas and gaze over the floodplains of the Selinda, enjoying the passing wildlife as it has been for millennia. Hardly a moment goes by without animals being seen in front of camp. Activities on offer include game drives both during the day and night, fishing, nature walks and boating along the Selinda Spillway.

After the summer rains – the Central Kalahari Game Reserve completely transforms as the blue sky fills with huge clouds, and the plains and pans burst with sweet grasses. This is one of the best game viewing areas in Botswana at this time of year and not many people to seem to aware of this – so the visitors are few. The CKGR gets animals such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest in their thousands and is quite a sight to behold. Predators abound with plentiful lions – especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion, cheetah, leopard and jackals. Several species of antelopes make the trip to the grasses of the CKGR which include the eland, springbok, steenbok, gemsbok, hartebeest, kudu and duiker. The 8 environmentally adapted rooms are all solar powered and one of these rooms is a family room. The Tau Pan is in a national park, a very ecologically sensitive area and for this reason no night drives or off road driving is permitted.

Afro Trek offers personalised safaris in the Okavango Delta region and all the National Parks and Reserves. Afro Trek is based at Sedia Riverside Hotel, just 3 km out of Maun.
After having worked for different safari companies for a period of over 16 years, Pius Tebele, the company owner and experienced guide, believed there was a lack of dedicated cultural tourism within the safari industry.
Afro Trek also specialises in mokoro safaris of one, two or three days’ duration. These take place in a private concession, owned and operated by Batswana, on the Boro River system, in the Okavango Delta. For over 10 years Afro Trek has been working closely with and supporting the local communities that run the concession area.
Afrika Calls has therefore been built and developed to incorporate cultural tourism within safari experiences – this includes meetings with the legendary bushmen, visits to the Drotsky’s Caves and involvement with the Kuru San Dance Festival.

The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos. The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage. The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.
