More reasons than ever to call IJmuiden Business is booming in IJmuiden. This can clearly be seen by the busy activities on our quays and the increasing numbers of vessels calling at our berths. In recent years we have put in place a development strategy that is now starting to pay dividends. We have developed under-used land and have reclaimed further areas from the sea and built new facilities. As the only privately owned and operated port facility in the Netherlands, IJmuiden is able to adapt quickly and flexibly to changing trends. Once upon a time, fishing was the major focus of our harbour activities. The times have changed and we have diversified into a number of areas including offshore support, ferry services, wind farm construction and cruise ship calls.
Fishing However, fishing is still a vital part of our daily life. We have one of the largest frozen fish sectors in the country and one of its most important fish auctions – now operated for the first time as an internet auction. IJmuiden’s excellent location close to the major North Sea oil and gas fields with direct open sea access has enabled us to offer an attractive alternative for support services. Maritime gateway The Port of IJmuiden is the Netherlands’ premier fishing port as well as the maritime gateway to the Amsterdam North Sea Canal Port Area and home to important industries such as the impressive Corus steelworks. Companies working in the fishing industry, cold storage, shortsea trades, offshore business and ferry and cruise shipping all play a leading role in their markets.
Promising future Together, the port and local authorities have successfully created new sites and infrastructure and invite companies to invest in a promising future. This year, 2009, the municipality of Velsen, the Province of North-Holland and the Ministry of Economic Affairs promised € 10 million for further restructuring and refurbishment of the harbour. The total investment (including the € 10 million) amounts to some € 22 million and is a confirmation of the importance of the harbour.

IJmond harbour offers key advantages for wind power projects The port of IJmuiden has long been involved in offshore support and supply services. With the opening of spacious facilities at the IJmond Harbour, the port took the logical sideways step of creating a base for construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. Easily accessible 24 hours a day from the open sea, the deepwater IJmond Harbour has already attracted much attention as a base for offshore services. The harbour has 800 metres of quay with 11.0 metres depth alongside. There are plenty of landside areas for storage and construction of turbine and tower components.
Spacious facilities for handling wind farm projects Deepwater access for specialised vessels Long history of providing offshore support
IJmond Harbour has already been used as a base for two offshore wind farm construction projects Location close to wind park sites Wide availability of industrial expertise Ready access to airport and main highways
ZEEHAV EN IJMUIDEN NV
Ideal base So far, the IJmond Harbour has been used as a base for construction of two offshore wind farms – the first to be installed in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. They are part of the government’s strategy to create 6,000 MW of power from offshore wind energy by 2020. The Vestas consortium of turbine manufacturers and the civil engineering company Ballast Nedam won the concession for Offshore Windpark Egmond aan Zee, completed in December 2006. The 36 3MW turbines and tower components were assembled onshore at the IJmond Harbour and shipped to the wind park, 15 km off Egmond aan Zee, just north of IJmuiden. The Princess Amalia Wind Farm – formerly known as Eneco Q7 – was the second offshore wind farm in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and the first in the world to be located more than 12 miles (19.3 km) offshore. The park contains 60 turbines of 2MW each and is located in block Q7 of the Dutch continental shelf, 23 km from IJmuiden. The wind farm was a

Once the wind parks have been built, they need regular maintenance and support. They also need to be serviced by special vessels of a very different type from those normally used in the North Sea oil and gas industries. The IJmond Harbour is ideally suited to this activity. Diversity is key to success for modern and flexible seaport with all the right connections The port authority for the North Sea port of IJmuiden has unique advantages. As well as being the only privately owned harbour facility in the country, IJmuiden is also perhaps the most flexible. The port authority has used this flexibility wisely to maintain a vital strategic and competitive advantage. The port of IJmuiden dates from 1876 when the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam was opened. Port operations were managed by the government-owned Staatsvissershavenbedrijf (Fishing Port Authority) until 1989 when they were sold to the private company Zeehaven IJmuiden NV. Local companies own 72 per cent of the shares, with 28 per cent owned by local and provincial government.

ZEEHAV EN IJMUIDEN NV
Since then, Zeehaven IJmuiden NV has transformed the small-scale fishing harbour into one of the most dynamic and thriving ports in the Netherlands. Diversification has been the key. Today, the port offers first-rate facilities in such key areas as the cruise business, ferry services, frozen fish and the offshore sector.
Growth The long-held dream of creating additional harbour facilities was realised in 2005 with the opening of IJmuiden’s third purpose-built harbour, the IJmond Harbour. The IJmond Harbour is the main focus of ongoing development in the port. Already it is a major base for the offshore sector as well as a convenient place for construction of the first of two wind farms in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. These activities are a perfect complement to its long-established activities in the offshore supply and support sector. A further element in the IJmuiden line-up is the

itself as a ‘first choice’ partner across a broad range of sectors.
As a ferry and cruise port, IJmuiden has key advantages that have allowed operator DFDS Seaways to upgrade its service. The port is also looking to attract further cruise ship calls to its landmark Felison Terminal as a viable alternative to Amsterdam. Zeehaven IJmuiden has also been redeveloping older and less productive parts of the port. It has created two small business parks and is looking to acquire other waterside facilities together with RON NV inside the locks. P O R T H A N D B O O K 2 010 -12

Open for business The Port of IJmuiden is wholly contained within the Municipality of Velsen (Gemeente Velsen in Dutch), which covers about 53 sq km and has a population of about 68,000. The municipality is located in the Province of North-Holland and embraces the towns and villages of IJmuiden, Driehuis, Santpoort-Noord, Santpoort-Zuid, Velsen-Noord, Velsen-Zuid and Velserbroek. The Port of IJmuiden is the Netherlands’ premier fishing and offshore wind energy port as well as being the maritime gateway to the Amsterdam North Sea Canal Port Area.
Prime location IJmuiden’s prime location, on the seaward side of the locks, with open access to the North Sea, provides an outstanding entrepreneurial scope for shipping trades including fishing vessels (cutters and trawlers), reefers, ferries, cruise ships and offshore supply ships. Companies working in the fishery industry, cold storage, short sea trade, offshore business and ferry and cruise shipping all play a leading role in their trades. They all work in the cluster of the IJmuiden harbour for a dynamic worldwide market.
12
ZEEHAV EN IJMUIDEN NV
Their investments generate a series of impressive buildings and port structures as well as a large number of qualified jobs. All these harbour activities are supported by efficient and customer-friendly harbour services. On the north side of the canal lies Velsen-Noord, where the giant steel plant of Corus Strip Products IJmuiden (formerly Koninklijke Hoogovens and now part of Tata Steel) is located. In recent years Corus has evolved into one of the most modern steel plants in the world and has carved out a profitable role for itself in niche markets.

Keynote of confidence as IJmuiden reinvents itself The town of IJmuiden is reinventing itself. Development and renovation are widespread, with new construction projects and building work apparent throughout the town and port areas. Until the construction of the new IJmond Harbour – the port’s third deepwater harbour – the port community’s biggest problem was lack of space to develop. Since the new harbour opened, however, the town and port have entered a new phase in their history, with large areas of valuable waterfront land now available for occupation. This, in turn, has led to development projects aimed at ensuring the long-term prosperity of the town’s maritime and commercial communities.
Initiative Along with several regional development companies, Zeehaven IJmuiden NV has launched a far-reaching strategy to reinvent the maritime and business sectors of IJmuiden.
Extensive investment across all sectors of economy Redevelopment of quayside areas New offices and commercial properties Relocation of businesses to more suitable environments Several new business centres being developed Transfer of waterside properties to port-related activities Beautification of town centre of IJmuiden Development of tourism potential

Flexible port with diverse facilities Located just outside the lock gates of the North Sea Canal, the port of IJmuiden offers 24-hour access to deepwater berths for a diverse range of shipping. The port has adapted to changing trends and new ideas over recent decades. It is this flexibility that has led to such a success story for the port. Traditionally a fishing harbour, IJmuiden has adapted in several ways since the mid 1990s as the fishing industry declined because of quotas imposed by the European Union. Today, the port can boast a cruise terminal, ferry terminals and extensive supply base facilities for the offshore sector – and is now looking to expand these ‘new wave’ operations still further.
Key development A giant leap forward was taken in 2005 with the opening of the port’s third deepwater harbour, the IJmond Harbour, which provided a key new facility in addition to the existing Vissershaven and the Haringhaven. While activities in the Vissershaven and Haringhaven are centred mainly on the fishing, ferry and commercial sectors, the new harbour has been a focus for the business development plans of Zeehaven IJmuiden NV. Already there have been significant activities relating to the offshore supply and offshore wind farm projects taking place in the IJmond. This is a trend that the port authority is keen to pursue. Centrepiece of the old port is the Felison Terminal at the entrance to the Vissershaven. Key selling point for IJmuiden is ‘location, location, location’ IJmuiden’s location on the North Sea coast and its proximity to Amsterdam are core factors that have led to the growth of a thriving port community. Yet before the North Sea Canal opened in 1876 – linking Amsterdam to the North Sea for the first time – the area that now includes the town of IJmuiden was sparsely populated. Prior to the canal, the only routes for inland maritime trade were via Den Helder in the north and Rotterdam in the south. The North Sea Canal revolutionised the way trade was conducted in the Netherlands.
Evolution Initially, the entrance to the canal was used by fishing vessels plying their trade in the North Sea. As time went by, these fishing vessels attracted traders. This led to more fishing vessels and more traders. Gradually,

ZEEHAV EN IJMUIDEN NV
the maritime and fishing community that was to become the port of IJmuiden began to evolve. Since those days, the port has generated a strong market position thanks to its excellent geographical location and to the commercial clusters that have grown in the area, including ferries and cruise shipping, the fishing industry, the offshore sector and shortsea traffic.
Connections The lock-free status of the port means that the flow of goods, whether it be commodities, ferry traffic, fish or spare parts, can be handled quickly and efficiently. The A9 and A22 main roads give ready access to the national highway network just a few kilometres from the port area. Road vehicles can reach Amsterdam in under 30 minutes, while Schiphol International Airport is less than 25 minutes away by road. In addition, good rail links are in place, with direct connections to the port’s ferry terminal as well as to the Corus plant and Beverwijk on the north shore.
Competitive Barge services are increasing, too, especially for the fishing industry, which now uses containers more and more to transport frozen fish. The port is equipped to deal with shuttle services of reefer containers to Rotterdam by inland waterway. This helps the port’s fishing community to stay competitive. The port is active, too, in the shortsea ferry and cargo sectors. And it offers ideal conditions for further traffic growth in future. The port has a lot of experience in providing first-rate facilities for high volume ferry services – a sector that Zeehaven IJmuiden NV is keen to develop further. P O R T H A N D B O O K 2 010 -12

A key player in IJmuiden’s port community The multi service company KVSA has been an integral part of the IJmuiden maritime community ever since it was established in 1876 – the same year in which the North Sea Canal was opened. With its head office overlooking the first of the canal’s giant lock gates at IJmuiden, KVSA has expanded over the years. Today, the company is involved in a wide range of shipping-related businesses in the IJmuiden area. KVSA operates separate divisions to deal with logistics and telecommunications. A key role in the company’s activities is played by the stylishly designed Felison Terminal, located between the entrances to the North Sea Canal and the port of IJmuiden, with access to open water on both sides.
Felison Terminal One berth of the Felison Terminal is used by the ferry operator DFDS – for which KVSA is agent – and the other is used as a summer-season call for cruise ships that require an alternative berth outside the locks of the North Sea Canal for Amsterdam-bound passengers. In addition, the terminal provides offices for a number of local firms with maritime interests.

The traditional role of KVSA as a reliable partner to the shipping sector is as robust as ever. The company offers a full range of services including port agency, ship reporting, stowage and transport. KVSA is agent for about 1,000 vessels a year calling at IJmuiden and other facilities nearby. Furthermore, for over a century KVSA has published its own book of maritime information, with details of charges, regulations and services throughout the Amsterdam Seaports area, including Amsterdam, Beverwijk, Velsen/IJmuiden and Zaandam. Location and facilities offer key advantages for cruise lines Cruise operators are discovering the advantages – in terms of cost and time savings – of berthing in IJmuiden rather than passing through the lock gates of the North Sea Canal and continuing up to Amsterdam. In fact, berthing at IJmuiden’s Felison Terminal, owned and operated by KVSA, can save up to six hours’ steaming time compared with calling Amsterdam. This makes it ideal for vessels on a short stopover and for those not staying overnight in Amsterdam. The superbly designed Felison Terminal is a striking landmark. It has excellent facilities for all passengers along with first-rate security measures.

KVSA handles cruise ships efficiently and smoothly, providing a high level of service in terms of infrastructure, logistics and passenger transport. Every requirement of operators and passengers is fully met by KVSA.
Fast access The city centre of Amsterdam is just 30 minutes by coach from the cruise terminal, which has its own opulently styled Cruise Lounge. In this way, passengers can spend longer exploring Amsterdam and enjoying an enhanced experience of the nation’s cultural capital. As well as the coach link, passengers have the option of taking a fast hydrofoil service to the centre of Amsterdam. Passengers arriving back by coach can check in conveniently at the reception desk in the main entrance to the Felison Terminal. In recent years, between 20 and 25 cruise ships have called at the Felison Terminal each season and Zeehaven IJmuiden NV is actively encouraging further cruise calls as well as developing its range of cruise services. Attractive option for ferry operators The attraction of IJmuiden as a ferry port became clear in the early 1990s when the port began to diversify beyond its traditional involvement in fishing. The unchanging factors that make IJmuiden so ideal for ferries include its location just outside the locks of the North Sea Canal and its direct access to the national highway network. The A9 and A22 main roads are just a few kilometres from the port, offering fast access to the Amsterdam region and the northern Netherlands. There is a selection of berths only a short distance inside the harbour wall. Quay No 2 by the Felison Terminal in the Vissershaven is 200 metres long with 6.5 metres depth alongside and is used by the DFDS Seaways service. Another dedi-

Success Several ferry services have used IJmuiden in recent years with considerable success. With the scope of facilities and infrastructure available, there are good prospects for more services at IJmuiden in the years ahead.

DFDS The Danish ferry company DFDS Seaways has been operating between IJmuiden and Newcastle since the mid 1990s, when there was just one call per week. Today, the service runs daily, with departures from IJmuiden at 17.30 to arrive in Newcastle at 09.00 local time the next day. In the opposite direction, the ship sails from Newcastle at 17.00 arriving in IJmuiden at 09.30.
Sisterships Since 2006 the service has operated with two 31,000 grt sisterships, the ‘King of Scandinavia’ and ‘Princess of Norway’. Both vessels were fully renovated and modernised in 2006 and provide more capacity than earlier vessels on this route. The ‘King of Scandinavia’ has a capacity of 1,534 passengers and 600 cars, while the ‘Princess of Norway’ carries 1,364 passengers and 580 cars. On each vessel, passengers can enjoy a wide range of restaurants, shops, bars, cafés, cinemas and even a discotheque with live entertainment.
Growth Although the DFDS service is geared to the leisure market, the decision to increase capacity was driven by growth in freight traffic. This also means that truck drivers benefit from the high standard of accommodation and services. IJmuiden is an ideal Continental gateway for northern UK markets that are difficult to serve otherwise because it avoids many of the hold-ups on England’s highway network. The DFDS service offers the shortest route to northern England and Scotland. In the other direction, IJmuiden is an obvious point of entry for people travelling from the northern UK to Amsterdam and other Continental cities. P O R T H A N D B O O K 2 010 -12

Special terminal planned for containerised fish Some key events have led to the containerisation of deepfrozen fish. They include new market entry opportunities in central and eastern Europe, the removal of certain international trade barriers as a result of World Trade Organization negotiations – and quicker transport services. IJmuiden exports a range of pelagic fish to over 30 countries including China, Japan, Nigeria, Egypt and Poland. Thanks to the development of container facilities in the selling areas, shipments of deep-frozen fish can now be put in reefer containers. This has led to a smoother logistics operation and improved returns for new fish processing ventures in China as well. The growth of this traffic has led to calls for a new container terminal in IJmuiden with an emphasis on feeder services to international hubs in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp.
Higher volumes This is also likely to attract higher volumes of deep-frozen fish traffic to IJmuiden. New logistics concepts can be developed – for example, for farmed fish and other seafood such as salmon and jumbo shrimps. All over the world, there is a flourishing trade in fish. This can be attributed not only to the growth of pelagic fishing, but also to farmed fish species in Asia, Africa and Scandinavia. Furthermore, the development of reefer containers has led to an increase in waterborne transport of this fish traffic.
IJmuiden exports pelagic fish to over 30 countries New container terminal proposed to handle this trade Operations near the Haringhaven port
In 2006 about 300,000 tonnes of deep-frozen fish was transhipped in IJmuiden. Ever-larger volumes are being shipped in containers while the percentage going by reefer is falling. In addition, more and more deep-frozen fish is being delivered to the port in containers.

Fish auction succeeds by adding value Value rather than volume is the key principle behind IJmuiden’s fish auction, which moved on to the internet (pefa.com) for the first time in April 2008. Already, this bold move is paying dividends, with IJmuiden’s market share up from 12.18 per cent in 2006 to 15.9 per cent in 2008 in turnover terms. Operating under the name of Hollandse Visveiling IJmuiden BV (HVIJ), the fish auction is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zeehaven IJmuiden NV. At a time when landings at all Dutch fishing harbours are down as a result of European Union fishing quota restrictions, the policy of Zeehaven IJmuiden NV has been to seek value rather than volume. Prices have generally increased since 2002 while landings have decreased. The IJmuiden fleet consists of about 30 bottom

Frozen fish handling is still a key market sector Though far removed from its heyday in the 20th century, the fishing industry of IJmuiden remains an important and vital part of the port’s activities. Today, IJmuiden is one of Europe’s biggest centres for the landing and distribution of frozen fish, with a series of large quayside cold stores and other related facilities. Pelagic catches are brought to IJmuiden from as far afield as West Africa and Newfoundland.
Well connected Thanks to the excellent location and facilities of IJmuiden, frozen fish can be landed and stored or sent on its way with a minimum of delay. The national highway network is only a short distance away, offering ready access to Amsterdam and other centres of population as well as to Schiphol Airport for urgent, high-value shipments. Frozen fish can also be re-exported by sea in reefer vessels or containers from IJmuiden. The main species landed include argentines, blue whiting, cod, herring, horse mackerel, mackerel, pilchard, red fish, saithe, sardinella and sprat.

Expertise onshore leads to key opportunities offshore The port of IJmuiden has played a key role in the offshore industry in the southern North Sea since the port first ventured into this sector in 1968. The harbour authority has always guaranteed 24-hour berthing for supply vessels. This, combined with ready access to harbour facilities, has led to a cluster of service and supply companies within the port.

ZEEHAV EN IJMUIDEN NV
Location IJmuiden is an ideal location for offshore supply companies. In particular, it offers easy access to deepwater quays and fast turnround times for loading and discharging. A key factor in the development of IJmuiden’s offshore support sector was the opening of the IJmond Harbour – the Third Harbour – in 2005. Combining extensive deepwater berths with spacious onshore areas and easy access to the open sea, the IJmond Harbour is perfectly placed for offshore-related activities. Not surprisingly, the harbour has been used for two major wind farm projects, in 2006 and 2008, with materials and equipment being stockpiled, loaded on to vessels and shipped to offshore sites using local expertise and handling equipment. The success of these ventures has helped the port build a reputation for smooth and seamless operations that is expected to attract similar projects in the coming years. The opening of the IJmond Harbour greatly boosted the potential for growth in offshore activities. The first company to take advantage of this was Marine Service Centre IJmond (MSCIJ), established by six companies in 2001 to exploit the potential for offshore-related activities in the IJmond Harbour. Since then, MSCIJ has been providing support services to offshore oil and gas production companies on the Dutch continental shelf, including Fabricom, a leading contractor for onshore and offshore construction, maintenance and services for the oil and gas sectors.

In bad weather, a helicopter service is available for bigger vessels and for deep-draught vessels in the IJ-channel. The pilot station offers a reporting service for masters who want to report their ETA berth to their agent. Pilots are ordered from the Pilot VTS IJmuiden (Tor: 71169 PIVTS NL) or via VHF, Channel 12 (Traffic Centre IJmuiden).
